42nd Annual Meeting November 18, 2014

The story of the CJE logo Numerous pomegranates and pomegranate seeds embellish the Tree of Life that is pictured on the cover of this report. This is highly appropriate because abstract representations of a pomegranate and its seeds are the foundation for the imagery of the CJE logo, pictured here. There are 613 seeds in a pomegranate, and these represent our 613 lifetime mitzvot or commandments. The pomegranate is of major significance in Jewish theology and history. The eighteen colorful seeds underscore the importance of the word Life (“chai”) in our name, the diversity of our staff and the diversity of our programs. In the secular world, pomegranates are considered one of the most nutritious of all fruits, carrying critical antioxidants that combat against disease and promote healthy aging. Our brand identity is a colorful and positive affirmation of aging and reflects our agency’s mission and values. As for the Tree of Life, it is one of the most prevalent symbols in Jewish tradition and interpretations vary on its exact symbolic meaning.

He is retired from Ernst & Young having spent more than 30 years there, most recently as Midwest Region Director of Health Care Services. He was Coordinating Partner on a number of major clients including several hospitals and health systems, the American Hospital Association and Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Terri Freeman

Terri Freeman joins the CJE Board as a new member. She is a retired CPA and business consultant. Throughout her adult life, she has remained active as a volunteer for Jewish causes, including serving on various Boards. As she and her parents have aged, she is interested in learning about and helping the community serve the elderly. It was through her volunteer work with JUF that she heard about CJE. She previously served on the Board and Executive Committee of Jewish Child and Family Services (JCFS), the JCFS 10

Response Advisory Council and Executive Committee, JUF’s Legacies and Endowments Committee, Accounting Division and Young Leadership Division Board. She was also affiliated with The Jewish Federations of North America (formerly United Jewish Communities) Young Leadership Cabinet, and was a participant of the Wexner Heritage Program and volunteer Girl Scout troop leader. Terri and her husband Michael have four children and live in downtown Chicago. They are members of Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago.

Vern Gideon

Vern Gideon is returning to the CJE Board after serving three terms from 2003 to 2013. He has been active in the Chicago Jewish community: he has been a member of AIPAC, and he serves on the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s Professional Advisory Committee and Trades, Industries and Professions Division. Fortunate to have grown up with grandparents and even a great-grandparent, he became interested in the work of CJE almost 20 years ago when he joined the Board. Allan was also very close to his uncle, Harold Goldstein, who was a resident at both Gidwitz Place and Lieberman Center. Allan and his wife Marsha have four children and live in Northbrook, where they have also been members of Congregation Beth Shalom for over 30 years. 11
