Public Programs
Spertus is a partner in serving our community, supported by the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.
Spertus offers dynamic learning opportunities, rooted in Jewish wisdom and culture and open to all. Graduate programs and workshops train future leaders and engage individuals in exploration of Jewish life. Public programs include films, speakers, seminars, concerts, and exhibits—at the Institute’s Michigan Avenue facility, in the Chicago suburbs, and online.
The windows are fritted (ceramic dots called frits are bonded onto the glass) to control heat gain and glare.
Cleaning products are Green Seal certified. Paints and building materials are low- or no-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds).
Food service disposables are made from biodegradable materials (no plastic containers) and no hydrogenated fats are used. In fact, fryer oil is recycled into biofuels.
Our commitment goes well beyond our desire to do the right thing by being a good corporate citizen. Conservation and environmentalism are Jewish imperatives, woven into the fiber of our sacred teachings of tikkun olam (partnering with God to repair the world) and ba’al taschit (prohibitions against wasting). As an institute for Jewish learning and leadership, we are proud to take the lead in this regard. We go to great lengths to live the wisdom of these treasured precepts in everything we do at Spertus.

In the months ahead, I look forward to sharing several other important Spertus initiatives. Our enhanced dedication to sustainability offers us an opportunity to begin our ninth decade by reaffirming our historic commitment to sacred Jewish precepts and stands as an invitation for those who share our values to join us in this effort.

Through recycling and composting, Spertus saves approximately 40 tons of waste from entering landfills each year.
More recently, we have taken a number of additional steps designed to enhance our commitment. Key among these was the decision to power our facility entirely with renewable energy, saving 6,200 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere over the next three years. See the sidebar for additional examples of our sustainability.
For those wishing to learn more about Judaism and environmentalism, I encourage you to visit the Asher Library at Spertus in person or check out our Environmentalism and Judaism Subject Guide online. As a start, you may find the following websites of interest:

The Spertus kitchen, managed by Wolfgang Puck Catering, purchases locally and organically whenever possible, using seasonal menus to avoid serving fruits or vegetables that require long-distance transportation.
In conjunction with our 90th anniversary in 2014, I am proud to announce Spertus Green, Spertus Institute’s Environmental Initiative. Issues of sustainability and environmental sensibility have been at the core of Spertus’ ethos since we moved into our new facility in 2007. In recognition, our award-winning building at 610 S. Michigan Avenue was awarded a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2008.

Matzah to Menorah A Holiday Jazz Celebration
Chicago Tribune Jazz Critic Howard Reich asked these questions the last time tenor Alberto Mizrahi and harmonica/piano whiz Howard Levy played together at Spertus—and he answered with a resounding “yes!” In fact, he suggested we host a repeat performance with a larger ensemble, since “one hardly can imagine a jazzier way to say Happy Hanukkah.”
Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi, of Chicago’s Anshe Emet Synagogue, is one of the world’s leading interpreters of Jewish music. He has appeared with orchestras through the U.S., Europe, and Israel, and has performed with musicians ranging from legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck to the great Theodore Bikel.
Eugene Friesen, a graduate of Yale School of Music, is active internationally as a performer, composer, conductor, and teacher.

A Biblical Approach to Mental Health
Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik as Philosopher
This integrative, 12-week, online, continuing education course is offered by Spertus Institute in conjunction with the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. It is taught by Kalman J. Kaplan, PhD and Paul Cantz, PsyD. Students will compare biblical and classical Greek perspectives on a number of mental health issues and learn the basis for biblical psychotherapy.
Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik has long been recognized as one of the greatest Talmudic scholars and rabbinic thinkers of the 20th century. What has not been sufficiently appreciated is the significance of his philosophical thinking and the original contributions his writings make to the contemporary philosophical study of religion. This conference will focus on the philosophical dimensions of his work as well as new perspectives opened up by his writings.
Begins February 10
Sunday, February 16 from 12 to 6 pm
Why is this course important? Nearly 90% of all Americans will contend with at least one significant mental health problem during their adult lives.
Few religious leaders have been trained to provide mental health care, even though more Americans go to clergy for counseling than to psychologists.
Conversely, many psychotherapists are untrained in, and sometimes insensitive to, biblical narratives and religion. In fact, studies have found that 90% of patients believe in God, whereas only 40% of clinical psychologists do.
Panelists Arnold I. Davidson, University of Chicago Paul Franks, Yale University Massimo Giuliani, University of Trento David Shatz, Yeshiva University Shira Weiss, Stern College at Yeshiva University Reuven Ziegler, Yeshivat Har Etzion and Toras HoRav Foundation The conference is co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Center for Jewish Studies, the University of Chicago Divinity School, and Spertus Institute. Open to the public at no charge, but advance registration is necessary. Please register online at spertus.edu/Feb16.

Consisting of ten large-scale, limited-edition, silk-screened prints, Andy Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century includes portraits of Sarah Bernhardt, Louis Brandeis, Martin Buber, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, George Gershwin, Franz Kafka, the Marx Brothers, Golda Meir, and Gertrude Stein. All are portrayed through Warhol’s Pop Art lens. Why did Warhol, a Catholic, create this series? In the 1980s, he received a request from his friend Ronald Feldman to depict Golda Meir for an Israeli art dealer. He decided that not only would he put his signature touch on Meir, he would create portraits of Jewish thinkers, performers, politicians, and writers.

Maryan’s paintings can be found in significant collections around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The Spertus collection is especially rich in his work because Herman Spertus (one of the brothers for whom the Institute is named) befriended and supported Maryan during the years the artist lived in Chicago and New York.
