Charity Ball Update “The 2013 Terberg Charity Ball, which was held at the Crow Nest Park Golf Club in Brighouse last summer, raised over £10,000 and during the Autumn the charity committee had the difficult task of allocating the funds in line with all the many requests received. With the aim of ensuring that as many good causes as possible were helped, the following organisations were the recipients of the money raised during the evening: • Yorkshire Children’s Trust • King Cross Junior Football • Parkinsons UK (Halifax) • Mount Tabor Football Club • Jer Lane Cricket Club • Elland Swimming Baths / Leisure Centre • St Thomas’ Church • 4Louis • Compass Bridge • Dodnaze Community Association • Skillshop • Rastrick Cricket & Athletic Club • Greetland Goldstars JFC • New Beginnings Christian Centre • Pleasant Pastimes • Whitworth Waterski TERBERG TODAY INNOVATE TO DIFFERENTIATE

• Siddal Rugby League • Calder Valley Club Day Centre • Whitehill Allotments The requests we had ranged from items such as training kit and equipment, through to touchscreen computers for adults with learning difficulties, and also a mobility shed with a ramp for people with physical disabilities. It was pleasing to be able to allocate the money across such a broad spectrum of worthy causes. Once again many thanks go to everyone who contributed to the Charity Ball and to making it such a successful event.”

Making a show of ourselves in 2013… In September 2013, Terberg DTS Fire and Rescue Division exhibited for the first time at the Emergency Services Show at the NEC, Birmingham. “Exhibitions can be a case of just keeping your face in the public domain but this has been a very busy event despite the slight disruption caused by the firefighters dispute. For Terberg, this show was incredibly worthwhile and productive,” said Alisdair Couper.

SAR60 Celebrations Managing Director Alisdair Couper, and his partner Trudi Akroyd, were delighted to be invited to join in the ‘SAR60’ celebrations at HMS Gannet, a commemorative event to mark 60 years of ‘Search and Rescue’, which has seen over 10,000 lives being saved! The event was one in a series held throughout 2013 with the aim of raising £60,000 for the Royal Navy and Marines charity – CLIC Sargent - providing support for children with cancer, and their families, as well as the charity Children’s Hospice South West, which provides care for children with terminal illnesses.
Keeping the country running Terberg Today stopped by at the Port of Felixstowe, the largest container handling port in the UK, to see how they operate Terberg terminal tractors to, quite literally, keep the country running!
“it’s an honour to continue to support the SAR community in the valuable life-saving work that they do” said Alisdair Couper.
The first thing that strikes you as you enter the site is the sheer scale of the operation as it stands with huge cranes dominating the skyline. Of course it hasn’t always been that way, explains Debbie Coe, Customer Relations Manager, “The site was founded as a railway company way back in 1875 and it would be eleven years later until the first ship docked in 1886.” It took four years to dig a dock deep enough to accommodate any vessels and it wasn’t until the1960’s, when the dock began to take shape as we see it today, that Felixstowe led the way to become the first dedicated container port in the UK. The dock has seen TERBERG TODAY INNOVATE TO DIFFERENTIATE

considerable change since the 60’s and is now capable of accommodating the very largest container ships in the world. The relationship between Terberg and the Port of Felixstowe goes back many years. The Port took its first delivery of 18 Terberg YT tractors way back in 1997 and now operates close to 200 Terberg YT and RT terminal tractors, which are worked incredibly hard, 24 hours a day, feeding shipping containers to a staggering 34 ship to shore cranes, 96 Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes and 9 Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes. This mix of handling equipment enables Felixstowe to shift a staggering 3.6 million Twenty Foot
the site’s own, “Orwell Engineering,” who look after the maintenance of all of the terminal tractors. Michael was promoted to his current position in 2009 (Engineering Manager, Mobile Equipment) - overseeing 35 engineers, who look after 1250 mobile assets, with a total of 1750 major maintainable assets, 260 of which are terminal tractors. “In 2011 I was then fortunate enough to gain responsibility for a further 18 staff who perform the majority of the planned maintenance on the lifting equipment (Cranes, RTG’s and RMG’s) to broaden my portfolio, and the steep learning curve that this brought with it.” he explains.
Equivalent Units (Standard Size Ship Containers) per annum. During our visit, we also caught up with Michael Robinson, Engineering Manager of Mobile Equipment to find out his role in keeping the moving fleet in service. Michael is a stalwart of the Port, “I have been working at the port for 19 years, I started straight from school as an apprentice Engineer and never, in my wildest dreams, imagined I would be in charge of looking after everything with a steering
wheel - or towed behind something with a steering wheel at the port! This includes the huge wheeled cranes and now even extends to looking after the staff who work on the RTG’s, RMG’s and Cranes!” Michael admits, “the first time I saw the cranes (at 16 years old) I thought, I don’t fancy taking my spanners all the way up there, what have I let myself in for? But thankfully, I soon got used to it!” Michael progressed quickly and in 2003 became a team leader and in 2006 was handed responsibility of
“Without question,” explains Richard Woodings, Head of Sales for Terberg DTS, “reliability is key to the success of the Felixstowe operation. Terberg DTS Service and Parts supply has certainly played an instrumental role in ensuring that the company has now become one of the top listed ‘approved suppliers’ to The Port of Felixstowe.” In 2014, The Port of Felixstowe is due to take delivery of 24 new Terberg YT tractors and these will replace some of the older Terberg tractors that have been in continuous service for over 14 years, each having over 50,000 hours of operation and still using the original drive trains! Richard Woodings, commented, “Having worked with Hutchison Ports UK operations for over 15 years I have witnessed many changes, developments and expansions. I am privileged to have worked with quality people over the years that, without exception, have always been professional and very knowledgeable about the industry, operations and equipment. On behalf of Terberg Group and Terberg DTS UK, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Debbie, Michael and the team for their long standing support and look forward to the next 15 years.”

Seacom Trailer Update One area that we believe will go from strength to strength is our specialist Industrial trailer range with a number of significant orders from both the port and industrial sectors. We believe that these trends will continue in 2014 with increased sales and rental for this type of trailer. Seacom trailers have proved a strong and popular partner in niche markets and one that springs to mind are some trailers we recently supplied to a customer for the handling of large reels of paper. These trailers have been designed with a cabriolet sliding roof, which protects the load during inclement weather. Richard Woodings, Head of Sales for Terberg DTS

Terberg supports Operation Florian Terberg DTS Fire and Rescue Division are proud to be supporting the charitable work of Operation Florian with the contribution of a Mercedes 4x4 Fire Fighting Vehicle to help the organisation improve the fire safety in some of the poorest regions around the world. Operation Florian was established as a charity in 1995. It is a UK Fire Service Humanitarian Charity working to promote the protection of
life amongst communities in need, worldwide, through the provision of equipment and training to improve firefighting and rescue capabilities. The charity is run purely by volunteers and any member of the emergency services can request their help. Funds for the charity are made up of fundraising events and donations. And finally….. Terberg DTS has been recognised by the West Yorkshire Fire Service for its continued support to help train the regions Fire Fighters to the highest standard. Terberg DTS regularly donates vehicles and equipment to West Yorkshire Fire Service to aid training for heavy vehicle lifting and critical accident simulation. The equipment allows the fire fighters to train under more realistic circumstances so they are well drilled should the simulation become a reality.
Around the world Terberg Fire and Rescue engineers have racked up thousands of miles this month supporting our partners all around the world. Our engineers visited the South Atlantic to carry out various repairs to two fire appliances as part of our current MOD in service support contract. A Fire and Rescue support engineer travelled out to Bangladesh to conduct an
inspection of ARFF vehicles at various airport locations around the country. Terberg have also been tasked to compile a work schedule and spare parts requirement to bring the various appliances back to full operational use. And to complete a busy month, one of our engineers carried out inspection visits and service repairs on numerous fire appliances in various locations in Pakistan as part of our position as service support agents for the Oshkosh Corporation.
Richard Mawson of West Yorkshire Fire Service presented Alisdair Couper, Managing Director of Terberg DTS with a certificate of recognition, adding, “Without the continued support from Terberg DTS and the loaning of equipment to the Rescue Service Training Centre for the RTC instructor courses, the training would be very difficult to carry out and unrealistic. The equipment loaned goes a long way to improve the safety of the operational crews of West Yorkshire.”

A dozen new Terberg distribution tractors work hard for Fowler Welch With nine depots across the UK, leading ambient, chilled and FMCG supplychain specialist, Fowler Welch operates an intensive 24/7 warehouse and logistics operation, handling high volumes of ambient and multitemperature products. In support of its primary distribution fleet, Fowler Welch has recently restructured its depot based shunter fleet by taking 12 new Terberg YT182 tractors on a 5 year contract hire deal.
According to Paul Allera from Fowler Welch, “At our depots, we have sufficient traffic to justify operating a sizeable shunter fleet. For example, our national distribution centre for chilled products in Spalding is home to over 200 trailers that generally require in excess of 5000 lifts per week from the on-site shunters.” Terberg’s success in distribution is based on the performance of its popular YT 4x2 distribution tractor range, which is renowned for offering a spacious and ergonomic cabin for the operator with excellent visibility and access, combined with reliability and effective performance over its working life. During the contract negotiations, Terberg were able to provide Fowler Welch with a high spec version of its popular YT182 distribution tractor with additional requested features
such as night heating, extra 5th wheel controls, a training seat and Haldex soft docking. All 12 Terberg YT182’s are now in service with Fowler Welch, following a seamless introduction of the vehicles into the Fowler Welch network. “The overall package put together by Terberg was superb, their approach to our business was really flexible and understanding, and they showed a real willingness to support us, not just from day one but through a proven after sales service for the full contract duration,” said Paul Allera, “The way they handled the integration of the new tractors into our fleet was first class, with individual handovers at each depot and full on-site training.”
