Springtime means sunshine, so take advantage of all that natural light by making sure your windows and mirrors are sparkling clean inside and out. When spring comes, open your blinds.

Focus on yard clean-up.

CALMING HUES TO PAINT PAINT YOUR BEDROOM Your bedroom should be a calm, peaceful place meant for rest. You may already know that the temperature of your bedroom can impact your sleep, but did you know the color can, as well? As part of a bedroom redesign, consider painting your walls a soothing color that matches your other dÊcor. You’ll be more relaxed in a comforting space, so reach out to your local painter or go to your local painting and home design center to speak with an expert and find the perfect color for you. To help get you started, the following colors are known to create a mellow mood.


Blue. We’re not thinking a royal here. Try a light sky blue or a deep cobalt to calm the mind and lift the spirits. Darker hues like midnight blue evoke nighttime and sleep, to further help you get ready for bed. Pair it with a bright yellow accent to toss in a little splash of sunshine.

Cream. For walls, a pure white can be too stark. Skip it and go for a gentle cream shade for an easy-on-the-eyes color solution. Not into cream on the walls? Try cream-colored bedding for a cloud-like slumber station, or cream or white accent rugs.

Lavender. While purple is a beautiful color and suggests royalty, it can be a bit bold and much for some. Enter lavender. This lighter tone would be perfect to paint one accent wall, or even better, your ceiling.

Green. Skip the neon and choose a seafoam or spruce shade to help mellow your mind. A cream shade matches well with most greens if you want the perfect accent color. Forest greens are calming as well and conjure thoughts of being outdoors in a peaceful evergreen forest. Gray. This neutral tone is versatile and can easily match any décor. Consider a soft, muted heather or a deep slate or charcoal. Pairing gray with white or lighter gray hues creates a great look. Think a striking white comforter on your bed against a slate background. By taking inspiration from these colors, and working with your local painting experts, you’ll be creating a Zen-like bedroom oasis in no time.

U S E C ON C RE T E TO K E EP YOU R H O M E C OZY T HI S WINT ER With the weather outside cold and frightful in many areas around the country, you may be thinking of ways to keep your home warm and cozy. But not in a temporary way, like throwing on a warm blanket or firing up a space heater. What is a long-lasting, home value-increasing solution? Believe it or not, concrete is. Normally you wouldn’t associate cool, gray concrete with toasty warmth, but in fact, it has amazing thermal power. Once harnessed, you can use concrete to give you toasty warm floors, inviting indoor fireplaces, spa-like soaking tubs or attractive draft-proof walls. Contact your local contractor and try some of these features to make your home both stylish and comfortable for winters to come.

CONCRETE FIREPLACES – The chill of winter makes many homeowners reawaken their fireplaces so they can bask in the cozy warmth and ambiance of the flickering flames. But even when the fireplace isn’t in use, it often remains the focal point of a room and makes an important design statement. That’s why more homeowners are choosing the unique look of concrete to create custom fireplaces, hearths and mantels. Unlike traditional brick or stone fireplaces, there are more finish and color choices for concrete fireplaces. Since concrete can be molded, it can be molded to your unique taste, whether your want something more contemporary or traditional. With concrete, you can even integrate things like built-in shelves or seating.

CONCRETE FLOORS – Heating your home with a furnace and vents isn’t your only option. You can harness the power of rising heat with radiating concrete floors. By having the floor itself distribute the heat from the ground up using a radiant in-floor heating system, you will save energy and create a more comfortable living environment.

The science behind radiant floor heating is simple: tubes that circulate hot water or electrical heating elements are installed in a concrete slab when it’s poured, fusing the concrete into a source of evenly distributed heat. And even if you don’t have the option of installing brand new concrete floors, there are other ways you can take advantage of radiant heat. You can incorporate it into existing floors using ultra-thin electric heating mats are that can be embedded in thin-set cement overlays, allowing retrofitting over existing slabs without significantly raising the floor height. This process is a great way to warm floors in cold bathrooms, bedrooms, dressing areas and entryways. You can even retrofit cold basement floors with radiant heating to make them more comfortable. So, reach out to your contractor, and discuss the various concrete options you have available to you. This will allow you to relish in warmth and your personal style for years to come.


Spruce Up Your Laundry Room

When you’re stuck inside the house this winter with not much to do, you might be wishing that there was a home improvement project that you could complete – but what? Work on the exterior is probably not going to happen, and tasks like painting might require some windows open. But one area of your home that could probably use some sprucing up is your laundry room. And the great thing is, many of these practical tasks can be easily knocked out this winter!


Consider the following tips: Add a countertop.

Add shelving.

If you have a front-loading washer or dryer, you can add a countertop above them to create the look of a larger space. At the same time, you’ll have a smooth flat surface for folding your laundry or pretreating stains.

Avoid shelving that can make an already cramped laundry room feel claustrophobic. If you’re small on space, don’t add a cabinet or something that will take up even more. If you need shelving, consider the thin, wired variety. Alternatively, try hooks to hang your ironing board, or a pegboard if you need space to hang clothes. Save even more space by mounting a fold-out ironing board with an upper shelf to store your iron higher up on the wall. Just make sure the iron has room to cool down.

Set aside drying space. Provide space for drying by installing a tension rod – just like you would use to hang a curtain or shower curtain. When you pull clothes from the wash or dryer, place them on hangers, and hang on your rod to air dry, or prepare to put away. Once everything is dry, you can easily transfer them back to your closet. Then take down the rod and tuck it away. You can further expand your drying space by attaching drying racks to your walls that fold out when needed.

Another potential storage option is to install pedestal drawers directly underneath your washer and dryer to place cleaning supplies, extra towels or anything that can stand to get a little warm from the dryer.

Other quick ways to spruce up your laundry room are to add storage bins or baskets for detergents, dryer sheets and the like; swap out cabinet door handles and knobs for new; and if you have a window, add new drapes. There’s lots of possibility!


HOW TO CHOOSE THE

BEST DESK AND CHAIR FOR YOUR HOME OFFICE With increases in technology making it easier than ever to work from home and “telecommute”, more and more employees and companies are taking advantage of the practice. There are many benefits of being able to work from home, such as increased flexibility and saving time spent commuting. But for those who work from home, your workspace needs to be designed so that it maximizes not only your productivity, but also your health. When assessing your home workspace, two of the most important points are the furniture items you’ll use daily: a desk and a chair. Whether it’s a standing desk, stool at an elevated workstation, or a classic desk and office chair, there are many options to choose from. Science has shown that sitting all day long can be just as bad for your health as smoking. It contributes to increased blood pressure, obesity and spinal issues as well. But don’t just think, “Well, I’ll just get a standing desk and stand all day. That will prevent all that!” Standing for long periods of time can put pressure on the joints and cause other health problems as well. Adjustable height desks are the best of both worlds. At the push of a button, they can move up to allow you to stand, and then move back down so that you can sit. Or, instead of having an entire desk that moves up and down, you can get a monitor riser that will just lift your computer monitor up. If you go the traditional desk route, make sure to choose a desk that suits your needs. If you’re doing

mostly computer work, be sure the desk offers space or a compartment to hold the CPU underneath and built in wiring holes. If you need lots of space, consider an L-shaped desk.

As for chairs, you want something that is ergonomic, since you’ll presumably be spending lots of time sitting in it. A good office chair should have plenty of lumbar support, meaning the curved chair back should support your lower spine, following the natural curve of your lower back. The right seat will allow you to sit comfortably while also leaving an inch or two between the back of your knees and the seat. The chair’s height should be adjustable so that your feet are flat on the floor. Armrests should be adjusted so your shoulders aren’t hunched, and your arms are parallel to the floor. Finally, your chair should be able to recline a bit. Research has show that reclining in your chair at about 135 degrees may be better for your spine than sitting straight up. Keep these tips in mind when shopping for new home office furniture, and be cognizant that you need to focus on your health as much as you do your productivity.
