Have time time and and energy? energy? Have 5 affordable DIY projects homeowners can finish now (BPT) - Paid Content by Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. We are all spending more time at home now and are increasingly finding that DIY home improvement projects can be fun, rewarding and cost-effective. Especially today when it’s so important to have a comfortable, stylish home to enjoy more time with friends and family, DIY projects are a simple way to make our living spaces even better. Perhaps best of all, they empower you to personalize your home to reflect your tastes, preferences and individual needs. Thanks in part to trends in green building that encourage homeowners to invest in improving the efficiency of their homes, studies have estimated the global market for home improvement goods and services is expected to grow by 4.5% annually to exceed $1.1 trillion by 2025. And, the DIY market is expected to account for more than half of that figure. That’s all good news to homeowners with great ideas for home improvement that are looking for easy DIY projects or custom materials they can purchase affordably. Even better news: many projects can be completed for less than $500, potentially adding value to your home and, in many cases, adding years of enjoyment. Are you finding yourself with the time and motivation to move forward on a DIY project that can add more personal flair to your home? This season, consider tackling one of the following home improvement ideas slated to take less than $500 from your budget. * A kitchen backsplash with flash: Adding an eye-catching new backsplash to your existing wall - or replacing the one you have with a fresh, updated design - can make your kitchen feel like an entirely new space. You’re only limited by your creativity since your choice of backsplash materials is now nearly endless, with a vast variety of ceramic, metal, wood, concrete, glass, composite or stone designs to choose from in a number of shapes, sizes and configurations. Research suggests reports that 16 square feet of DIY backsplash materials should run you about $400 to $600, and you could have a finished product in as little as two to three days if you study up on techniques ahead of time.

Page 6

5DIYs.indd 1

* Beautiful and appealing yard space: Grooming and beautifying your yard can be an excellent way to boost your home’s overall appearance, increase its value and express your personal taste. To get started, talk with a local nursery about the best options for your yard and climate. The fun part will be choosing and installing a mix of new trees, shrubs, container plants, flowers and/or other outside plants that can turn your outdoor space into eye candy. * Pleasingly personalized paint: There’s nothing like a new coat of smooth, clean paint to make a room feel transformed. Aiming to energize an entry space? Cover the walls with a bright, welcoming color that pops. Want to make a bedroom more restful? Exchange that overly dramatic yellow with a soothing cream, taupe or seafoam. Best of all, paint is easy to change out again whenever your current color choices start to lose their luster. Expect to spend close to $200 for enough paint and supplies to paint a 10-by-12-foot room. * Your “personal best” bathroom: While a complete renovation may be beyond your skill level, most homeowners can capably complete less-difficult replacements involving showerheads, faucets, light fixtures and hardware. You might also paint or wallpaper walls, replace your shower curtain, towels, rugs, wall decor and window treatments. * The finishing touch? Crown molding: There’s a reason crown molding is so popular; it can instantly add elegance, contrast and distinction to an otherwise ordinary room. These days, the decorative trim can be found in wood, plaster or polyurethane to fit any budget. In addition to ceiling lines, you may wish to add it to your home’s upper cabinetry and other structural elements. One of the great joys of homeownership is the ability to personalize the space you call yours. Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. has many other resources, like budgeting and home maintenance tips to help new homeowners. NMLS #1561.

Happy Sellers!

"Lori has exceeded my expectations on every level. Linked up with her through USAA for the purchase of a house and couldn’t be happier. Initially wasn’t sure who to go with and we really lucked out finding her. She truly listens, cares, and makes you feel at ease. Moving from Virginia to Whidbey Island was stressful enough and it was nice knowing she had us taken care of from this end. Highly recommend using her if you’re in doubt of who to use when coming to Anacortes or Whidbey Island area." -William and Carlie

Cocktail railing and more: (BPT) - When determining the look of your outdoor living space, decking is only half of the equation. In many cases, it’s the deck railings that are most visible and the design element that makes the first impression. “Railings serve a necessary safety function, but they also play an important aesthetic role,” explains designer Alison Victoria, star of HGTV’s “Windy City Rehab” and “Rock the Block.” “They frame an outdoor space and define the setting’s style and personality.” Following are five fresh ways to frame up your outdoor space for maximum enjoyment and curb appeal:

1

Industrial inspiration

Industrial styling is all the rage, as homeowners seek to replicate the clean lines and modern looks found in today’s hottest hotels, restaurants and craft breweries. In backyards across the country, this commercial-to-residential trend can be seen in the increased use of aluminum railing styles that deliver sleek sophistication. One such example is Trex Signature Railing, which offers a range of designs, including horizontal rods, mesh panels or glass inserts, in addition to traditional spindles - all with the low maintenance and durability of aluminum.

2

Mixed materials

While railing matched to the decking remains perennially popular, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of customizable design possibilities afforded by new railing materials, styles and finishes. Visual interest can be achieved by juxtaposing materials such as composite, aluminum, glass and brick. For an eye-catching color contrast, consider pairing chunky, white posts with slim, black balusters. Or, mix classic and contemporary looks by using a traditional, wide railing to frame the deck while installing a slimmer railing style on staircases.

3

View-optimizing options

If you want to enjoy your view, thin balusters finished in black are a great choice as they tend to optically blend into the environment, putting more visual emphasis on the natural surroundings. Glass panels are also ideal, of course, as are

5DeckTrends.indd 1

8/16/2020 3:25:24 PM

5 trends for your deck cable and rod rail designs. Conversely, if you have nosy neighbors or a view you’d rather minimize, opt for railings with thicker posts and more tightly spaced balusters to enhance privacy.

4

Form and function

In certain cases, deck railings can be as practical as they are pretty. One of the biggest trends is “cocktail railing” or a “drink rail.” This approach uses a deck board as a top rail to create a flat ledge at just the right height for holding drinks and plates. This level surface also offers an ideal resting spot for potted plants, candles and other decorative accessories. By using boards that match the decking, you can achieve a look that complements your deck, while making great use of space.

5

Inviting illumination

Augment the beauty of your railing and lengthen the time you can spend enjoying your deck with discreet outdoor lighting that can be integrated into railing posts and caps. Not only will lighting set the mood, it also adds safety and security. Consider LED dimmable options to maximize energy efficiency, such as Trex Outdoor Lighting, which also are weatherproof and salt-air proof - ensuring they will last for years. (BPT) - It’s not always easy to be at home with kids day after day, but with a little creativity, you can beat cabin fever. Whether you’re in your own backyard or venturing out, there are plenty of things you can do to have fun together. Make sure to choose activities that are age-appropriate and that follow your current local guidelines for social distancing. Here are just a few things to try.

8 Ways Your Family Can Cure Cabin Fever

Get out in nature

Make washing the car an event

Visit nearby parks or scenic areas for fresh air and exercise. Choose locations that aren’t crowded, so social distancing isn’t difficult. Bring toys for the kids, like balls, kites, hula hoops, scooters or bikes.

If there’s a touchless car wash nearby, young children will have a blast being in the car during the washing process. Turn up their favorite songs while you sit back and watch the suds and water do their work. Or you could involve the kids in washing the family car in your driveway.

Play tourist Pretend your car is a tour bus. Let Mom or Dad play tour guide first, modeling what to say (serious and/or funny). Drive by picturesque or unusual locations and make up the “tour” as you go along. Then let your kids take a turn narrating the “sights” as you drive. Plan a celebratory parade Have a friend or family member with a birthday, anniversary or graduation to celebrate? Plan a drive-by parade with a few other family groups in cars, complete with signs, streamers and balloons. Honk, wave and sing as you slowly pass their home. Enjoy a treat with the family

Go on a scavenger hunt Whether you’re walking or driving through the neighborhood, play “I Spy” or hunt for specific items - like a red car, a blue house, a large dog - or search for signs, rainbows or teddy bears in neighbors’ windows (a trend sweeping the nation while people are staying home). Make the most of your own yard You’d be amazed how much kids can appreciate their own yard, with just a little help. * Create an obstacle course using large cardboard boxes, hula hoops, cones or other items from your garage.

Take a tour to find the best shake, burger or kids meal toy. For example, Sonic Wacky Pack Kids Meals come with a fun toy for kids. Through Aug. 31, kids age 3 and older will receive a Red Button & Friends Disc-Launching Spoon exclusively at Sonic with their meal. Check out SonicWackyPack.com for free, downloadable activity packs that include coloring sheets, puzzles and games to entertain the kids while stuck at home.

* Make bubbles with 1 part dish soap to 3 parts water, adding a little sugar (1-2 teaspoons). Stir the mixture gently. Use pipe cleaners or cut out the bottom of plastic water bottles to create wands.

Contactless ordering and payment are easy using the Sonic app: Just create and pay for your order in the app, drive to your nearby Sonic, and check in when you arrive via the app. A Sonic Carhop brings out your meal when it’s ready.

* Find veggies or flowers your kids want to grow and involve them in gardening projects.

* Use sidewalk chalk to draw hopscotch and other games, plus pictures and hopeful messages for neighbors walking by.

* Dig through your garage for neglected toys and games. When did your kids last play badminton or croquet? Or make your own games, like jump rope, cornhole or horseshoes, using household items. Search online for tips on crafting homemade games. Take a trip down memory lane Scour your memory and ask grandparents about outdoor games from when you (or they) were children. Have grandparents explain how to play their games via phone or FaceTime. Then, video kids playing the games for the whole family to share! Spending time together, outside or in, creates special memories your kids will treasure as they grow up making all your efforts worthwhile.

Tips to create the Ultimate Backyard Movie Night

(BPT) - Backyard movie nights are trending in summer 2020. Whether you want a romantic evening with your partner, a fun family activity for all ages or a memorable event with friends, backyard movie nights are a great option that can be planned again and again. To create the ultimate movie night, you need a few essentials. Consider these six steps to get ready for a season of cinema fun. STEP 1: THE SCREEN To help everyone enjoy a great view, you’ll want a screen as the centerpiece of the event. The cheapest option is to iron and hang a white bed sheet. However, to get a better quality viewing experience, consider buying white blackout fabric from your local craft store. Of course if you are serious about your outdoor movie nights, you may want to invest in an outdoor projection screen that rolls up and can be stored after each event. STEP 2: A PROJECTOR Not all portable projectors are created equal, and it’s worthwhile to invest in a good one for the best experience year after year. For example, the LG PH30N features a portable, lightweight design at 5-by-5-by-1.5-inches and weighs just 1.1 pounds. A small size with big impact, you get an impressive home theater experience with a rich picture in 1280 by 720 HD resolution up to 100 inches (measured diagonally), and brightness of 250 ANSI lumens. The powerful LED light source displays bright images with a lamp lasting up to 30,000 hours (up to 10 years based on a usage of 8 hours a day). Learn more at www.lg.com. STEP 3: SEATING Think high to low when setting up seating to allow everyone a good view of the screen. Blankets with pillows are perfect for

up front and are popular with kids. In the back, folding chairs or lawn furniture is ideal for adults or others who like to sit up without blocking another’s view. Stagger seating as necessary and add small tables as needed for food and drinks. You may want to add bins of blankets and pillows for extra comfort so people can grab them if desired. STEP 4: SNACKS AND REFRESHMENTS No movie experience is complete without favorite treats. For small groups, buy boxes of movie-style candy at your local store to give the experience an authentic feel. Popcorn in individual bowls and your favorite drinks will make for perfect snacking. For larger groups, set up a snack buffet with jars of candy such as licorice and gummies, plus coolers full of drinks. You might even create a popcorn bar where people can scoop their desired amount into bowls and top with a variety of savory, sweet and salty toppings. STEP 5: LIGHTING The best time for an outdoor movie is after sunset. However, you might want to add some light for safety and convenience. String lights are an affordable way to light pathways back to the house or around landscaping. Additionally, small flashlights for guests are a great option. You can get some at your local dollar store and they make a great party favor to take home after the event. You may even plan a pre-movie activity where kids can decorate their flashlight with stickers, gems and markers. STEP 6: ALERT NEIGHBORS You want your movie night to be a positive experience for everyone. With these steps you have the makings of a fun evening for guests, but as a courtesy, you should alert your neighbors of your plans. That way they know there may be more activity outdoors than usual. You should also keep sound at a reasonable level and select PG films to ensure appropriate language and content for everyone. Page 21

CDC on Homemade Masks: Who should NOT use masks: children under age 2, or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

Materials for Sewn Mask Two 10”x6” rectangles of cotton fabric Two 6” pieces of elastic (or rubber bands, string, or hair ties) Needle and thread (or bobby pin) Scissors Sewing machine

Masks are NOT surgical masks or N95 respirators. Currently, surgical masks and N95 respirators are critical supplies that should be reserved for healthcare workers and other first responders.

Sewn Mask Tutorial 1. Cut out two 10-by-6-inch rectangles of cotton fabric. Use tightly woven cotton, such as quilting fabric or cotton sheets. T-shirt fabric will work in a pinch. Stack the two rectangles; you will sew the mask as if it was a single piece of fabric.

2. Fold over the long sides ¼ inch and hem. Then fold the double layer of fabric over ½ inch along the short sides and stitch down.

3. Run a 6-inch length of 1/8-inch wide elastic through the wider hem on each side of the mask. These will be the ear loops. Use a large needle or a bobby pin to thread it through. Tie the ends tight. Don’t have elastic? Use hair ties or elastic head bands. If you only have string, you can make the ties longer and tie the mask behind your head.

4. Gently pull on the elastic so that the knots are tucked inside the hem. Gather the sides of the mask on the elastic and adjust so the mask fits your face. Then securely stitch the elastic in place to keep it from slipping.

Masks.indd 1

8/16/2020 4:12:21 PM

The CDC recommends that you wear masks in public settings when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

More information at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus

Materials for No-Sew Mask Bandana, old t-shirt, or square cotton cloth (cut approximately 20”x20”) Rubber bands or hair ties Scissors

1. Fold bandana in half.

2. Fold top down. Fold bottom up.

Make sure your mask: • fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face • completely covers the nose and mouth • is secured with ties or ear loops • includes multiple layers of fabric • allows for breathing with out restriction • can be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape

3. Place rubber bands or hair ties about 6 inches apart.

4. Fold side to middle and tuck one end insde the other.

Expert Tips to Maximize Your Victory Garden (BPT) - Sponsored by Miracle-Gro Quarantine and social distancing have inspired renewed interest in gardening and home cooking. These two activities go hand-in-hand as people grow their own produce and herbs that can be plucked just steps from the kitchen where they can whip up tasty creations. In fact, this movement revived the concept of victory gardens, which help people become more self-reliant during challenging times.

What is a victory garden? Victory gardens were common during World War I and II when people were encouraged to grow their own foods to supplement their household needs and open the food supply for the troops. People would grow fast-yield crops in virtually any open soil, whether that be on their properties or in community gardens. Victory gardens are trending in summer 2020 because people want to positively utilize their space while spending time at home. In fact, more than half (55%) of American adults are gardening or caring for their lawn during the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a survey of 1,000 nationally representative U.S. adults by Wakefield Research for Miracle-Gro. Growing a victory garden with your family is a wonderful way to bond, enjoy fresh air and lower your grocery bill. With the surge in cooking at home, many Americans are discovering the joy of using fresh items from their gardens. Two-thirds (67%) of adults are growing or plan to grow edible plants, including vegetables (52%), herbs (33%) and fruits (31%), according to the survey.

How to get the most out of your victory garden Proper care will help ensure a bountiful harvest from your victory garden. Miracle-Gro’s Sara Eff, scientist in gardens at R&D, offers these helpful tips for getting the most out of some of the most popular garden plants: Add supports: As garden plants grow, many need a little support. This helps keep leaves out of the dirt, prevents many diseases and strengthens against the elements. For example, pepper plants should be staked to help support the main stem. Tomatoes benefit from a cage to protect the fruit-bearing branches. Plants like peas, beans and cucumbers love to climb a trellis, plus it makes it easier to pick them.

VictoryGarden.indd 1

Nourish well: Like a multivitamin for your garden, you may consider supercharging your plants with Miracle-Gro Performance Organics Edibles Plant Nutrition Granules made from a mix of natural and organic ingredients. Specially formulated for growing tomatoes, vegetables, herbs and fruits, you simply apply dry and water in to start feeding. This can help plants grow faster, stronger and promotes higher yields than unfed plants. Water wisely: Be aware of precipitation and how much Mother Nature is providing. Use a water gauge to help if needed. Gardens need about 1 inch of water per week, but you may need to supply more depending on heat and drought conditions. Keep in mind, deeper watering every few days is ideal rather than quick sprinkles, with the early morning hours best to avoid evaporation. To pinch or not to pinch: Small unnecessary stems and leaves can be pruned or hand pinched to stimulate growth upward. For example, tomato suckers are small leaves off the main stem. Any below the lowest set of flowers can be removed or pinched off. Be sure to research proper trimming per plant variety as each one is unique. For example, when a basil plant blooms at the top, you pinch it off so that the leaves stay intact. However, you would never pinch tomato flowers because that’s what turns into fruit. Second harvests: With a bit of smart planning, you can enjoy multiple harvests that provide fresh foods into fall. Early maturing crops like lettuce, radishes and beets can be replanted mid to late summer and provide another round of produce. For second plantings, choose fast-maturing, disease-resistant varieties of plants. For example, some leafy greens, such as kale, prefer cooler weather and can even survive frosts. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be well on your way to growing your own victory garden. For additional gardening tips and planting advice, visit www.miraclegro.com.

Stressed as a parent? No- and low-cost ways to educate and entertain kids (BPT) - Having children is a great joy, but it also can be stressful. Pressures are plentiful, from making sure your child has the right gear to needing to help manage their school and social schedules. To intensify matters, COVID-19 has brought quarantines and social distancing around the world, and parents are now tasked with educating and entertaining their kids more than ever before.

classes to engage kids of all ages. Educational websites such as Khan Academy and Sesame Street offer nocost learning materials. Remember to sign up for newsletters from parenting organizations as well to get free activity ideas sent right to your email.

also smart to reach out to your REMAXIt’s ACORN children’s school or local community

Financial stress is growing dramatically. A whopping 71% of parents are worried about their personal finances right now, and 81% describe their level of parenting stress as medium or high, according to the OfferUp 2020 Parents and Kids Recommerce Report. In addition to financial concerns, there is a multitude of challenges for parents during these unique times. Keeping kids entertained at home is the No. 1 cause of stress for parents during the pandemic, followed by educating their children at home, the study found. Keeping kids on top of their studies as well as happily entertained doesn’t require spending a lot of money. Consider these low- and no-cost ways to keep your children occupied at home: SEEK FREE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES Go online to discover a variety of high-quality educational websites. Many museums are now offering virtual tours and online educational

EducateEntertain.indd 1

center to explore options. Some offer memberships to websites that they can share so you can access material at no cost. Additionally, you can call and ask your local library about digital storytimes and virtual classes they might be holding, which can be a fun way to connect kids with others while they learn. FIND WHAT YOU NEED THROUGH LOCAL RESALE OPPORTUNITIES Have your kids played with all their toys and need some new supplies? Parents are turning to online resale marketplaces such as OfferUp to buy baby and kids items during the coronavirus pandemic with the goal to save money, make more sustainable purchasing decisions and support their local communities. Whether it’s a new toy or a necessary supply, you can find just what you need for less. You can also consider selling what you no longer use and make some money as a family. OfferUp is the largest mobile marketplace in the nation for local buyers and sellers and it’s as easy as taking a picture with your phone to sell items and then meet with local

people in a safe, secure manner. Millions of people buy and sell on OfferUp every year, and billions of dollars’ worth of items are exchanged. Why not make it a family effort to clean out rooms, sell unused items and save toward a group goal? DON’T FORGET TRADITIONAL FUN AND ACTS OF KINDNESS Old-fashioned fun is low cost and keeps kids entertained. Have family game nights and bust out the board games, work on puzzles together or start a crafting project. Go outside to play yard games, catch or kick around a soccer ball. Work on a time capsule, scrapbook or teach your children a hobby. Think about all the things older generations did to stay busy when people spent less time online and find your inspiration. To help spread positivity when so many people are stressed, consider simple things you can do from afar to spread cheer. Kids will enjoy brainstorming acts of kindness, and most don’t cost anything. For example, write inspiring messages on the sidewalk for people to see as they walk by, or color pictures to send to a local nursing home for residents who may not be able to receive visitors. Keeping kids educated and entertained while at home shouldn’t cause financial stress. Follow these tips to save money and keep kids happy. Recommerce or reverse commerce, refers to the process of selling previously owned, new or used products. Page 25
