There are many products on the market that are suitable for families with pets. Whether you prefer carpet, hardwood, laminate or vinyl flooring, there are options for every pet owner. VINYL: Vinyl is also a good option and is scratch resistant but be sure to choose a high-quality product, preferably “virgin” vinyl. It is 100% waterproof and can be purchased in planks or as a large sheet. Plank vinyl flooring comes in a plank style similar to laminate flooring and is installed to create a natural wood look. Vinyl plank flooring also has a sturdy fiberglass backing to it making it more rigid. LAMINATE: Installing hard-surface flooring makes clean up more manageable when you have pets. Laminate is always a great option but be sure to choose a high-quality product. The higher the AC (Abrasion Class) rating, the more durable the product. A score of AC 3 is residential, whereas AC 4 is low-traffic commercial, and anything above is considered high-traffic commercial. It is not recommended to go any lower than AC3 or to purchase a product that does not have a rating. TILE: Tile is extremely durable and scratchresistant and makes for easy clean up of accidents and spills. Most tile materials are scratchresistant, but some softer, more porous stones (like marble) may require more maintenance and treatment. For added comfort and warmth, consider using area rugs throughout the space.

CARPET: Most carpet manufacturers have an option to purchase “pet protection.” These are soil resistant, easy to clean and long-lasting finishes. If you are a dog or cat owner considering carpet, ask what protection options are available. BAMBOO: Out of all wood flooring options, bamboo is rated as the best and one of the most popular flooring for dogs and pet-friendly homes. The bamboo wood has a natural hardness that makes it more stain and scratch resistant than traditional hardwood. It can withstand high traffic, is resistant to wear and tear, and is ecofriendly. A wire-brushed finish is one of the best options available, and this texture makes it very easy to hide scratches. Woods with a distressed, hand-scraped look are also very useful as the distressing helps hide scratches and dents. Choosing a matte or satin finish shows fewer scratches than a product with a higher gloss level.

And depending on the status of your deck, you might not be ready for all the grilling, chilling and relaxing that could be in store for you this summer. If your deck is beyond what a simple staining can do, it might be time to consider a new one. But before you hire someone to start digging and building up a new deck, make sure they are qualified. Vet contractors and consider the following points to make sure you have the right professional for the job.

1. Is the contractor insured and licensed? Make sure the contractor you choose has insurance and the required licenses to obtain permits by calling his or her insurance company for verification. Without these, property damage or injuries that occur on your property could render you accountable. 2. Do you offer a warranty? Typically, contractor warranties only cover structural damage related to the construction of the deck. Reputable builders should provide a written statement that spells out the type and length of time they will guarantee their workmanship. Be sure to also inquire about any manufacturers’ warranties on the products being used. 3. How will the permit process be handled? Nearly every deck building project requires a permit. If you build without the necessary permits, you may have issues with paperwork or have to pay a fine when you try to sell your home. Most deck builders handle the permit process but be sure to obtain a copy for your records.

4. What decking materials do you work with? Your deck is a permanent addition to your home that affects its value, so it’s important to choose a contractor who is skilled and comfortable working with your preferred material. 5. Can you provide references? It’s one thing to read online reviews, but personally speaking with a previous customer offers another level of reassurance. Once your preliminary questions have been answered and you feel comfortable with the contractor, take the time to contact a few references to ask questions about the quality of work and overall experience to help ensure you are making a good hiring decision. If your kitchen has a lot of neutral wood accents, lightcolored tile or large windows that let in a lot of natural light, you can add a sleek, dramatic touch with a matte black paint for walls and/or cabinets. This shade of black works well with modern farmhouse and contemporary designs.

TEAL. For a fun and slightly retro look, consider teal for your cabinets or backsplash. This soothing shade of green/blue goes particularly well with white countertops and appliances. You can add more whimsy with brightly colored small appliances, like a yellow toaster or pink mixer. ORANGE. Nothing beats the warmth of a healthy dose of orange in your kitchen. Whether you opt for a soft creamsicle or a deep tangerine shade, an orange wall or backsplash goes great with white or natural wood cabinets. You can add more pizzazz with navy or cobalt accessories and glass. PINK. Not just for little girls’ rooms, pink is a pleasing, fresh color for kitchens, too. You can experiment by painting just your kitchen island pink—a great counterpart to white or wooden cabinetry—and carrying the theme through with pink curtains and kitchen linens.

To get even more creative, mix and match colors in your kitchen, painting lower cabinets one color and upper cabinets another. Or paint a wooden floor in a colorful geometric pattern. TIPS FOR A HASSLE-FREE MOVING DAY

Moving vans are criss-crossing the nation in great numbers these days, as consumers take advantage of historically low mortgage rates to upgrade their living space and grab their piece of the American Dream. The New York Times reported recently that moving companies are so busy, they are turning people away, and in most areas of the country, movers need to be booked way in advance of your moving day. But the big day will arrive sooner than you think and you’ll want it to go as smoothly as possible. Moving professionals offer five tips for ensuring that it does:

List last-minute chores. You’ve spent weeks sorting, packing and preparing for your move, but certain tasks cannot be accomplished in advance, like emptying and/or cleaning out the fridge and freezer, getting kids or pets to scheduled sitters, or taking out the last of the trash. Making a list will make it easier for you to check off lastminute needs.

Prepare a go-bag. Pack a box or suitcase with stuff you’ll need on moving day or the day after, as well as documents and valuables you don’t want to load onto the moving truck, such as phone chargers, toiletries, medications and an extra set of clothes for each family member. For a long journey, you may also want to fill a small cooler with water and healthy snacks or pre-made sandwiches.

Leave out basic cleaning supplies. You’ve likely done a thorough house cleaning by now, but once the furniture and packed cartons are gone, you may see dirty areas you didn’t notice earlier. Keep rags or paper towels and a few basic cleansers handy for tackling dust bunnies behind the now-gone sofa, or grime where the fridge once stood.

Do one last walk-through. Anything left behind may be difficult to retrieve later, so open all kitchen and bathroom drawers and cabinets, bedroom closets, coat closets and any other built-in areas where items may have escaped notice.

Have some cash on hand. While a credit card can cover unexpected stops for lunch or other purchases, you may want to have cash to tip your professional movers. Such tips are not mandatory, but if they’ve done a good job, consider tipping $20 per helper.

10 PAINT TOUCH-UPS FOR A SHOW-READY HOME When selling your home, it pays to touch up the paint. The higher perceived value of a maintained home is well-documented, and there’s no easier (or more economical) way to give the impression than with some fresh paint. Before placing your home on the market, complete these 10 touch-ups. Or, you may want to contact a painter and do more than touch up spots. 1. If you want buyers to consider your home, make sure the front door is well-painted. A fresh coat of paint will make a great first impression. 2. Next up is the entrance hall, where buyers will get their initial glimpse of the interior. At the very least, touch up areas where the paint shows marks or chips. Think of repainting this area entirely.

7. Inspect areas that come in contact with soiled hands—window frames, door frames, edges of doors, and walls around light switches. You may be able to clean them if you used a glossy paint; if not, do more touch-ups. 8. Scrub cabinet doors clean of fingerprints, if possible, or touch up painted areas.

3. Bathrooms often receive extra scrutiny from buyers, so give them extra attention. Touch up as needed.

9. Water stains on the ceiling are a huge red flag for buyers. Be sure to prime and re-paint these potential deal breakers.

4. Size does matter when it comes to the kitchen. If you want to make yours look bigger, paint the walls white or off-white. If repainting is not an option, remove food stains from the walls and conceal water spots by applying primer, then touch-up paint.

10. Put the finishing touches on your home. Look for stray flecks of paint, as well as marks and stains. Conceal them with some touch-up paint, and your home will be good to go...and show!

5. Assess your windowsills, especially if the view is a selling point. Sand, prime and paint them as needed. 6. Check your woodwork. Touch up chipped or marred paint on chair rails and floor molding.
