SPRING PROJECTS TO PERK UP YOUR PATIO

With spring in full swing and gardening projects on your mind as you hunker down at home, it’s time to start thinking about enjoying the patio again. A few small projects can take that dull, blank space and turn it into a patio with panache.

1. PAINT THE FLOOR. Plain Jane concrete isn’t something to get excited about; but painting the concrete can perk up your porch or patio. Go to your local paint store and have them help you pick out a color and give you all the prep materials. It’s more time-consuming than hard, but a painted patio looks neat and stylish.

2. PAINT YOUR FURNITURE. Over the winter or after several years outdoors, patio furniture can lose its luster. Sand and spray-paint your furniture to bring it back to life. If you have a big set, look for a local painter who can sandblast and powdercoat your furniture to make it look like new again.

3 . CREATE A SEATING AREA OR AN EATING AREA. Give your patio a defined eating or seating space with an indoor/outdoor rug. Add a seating arrangement to create an outdoor living space or a table for some al fresco dining in your new outdoor room.

4 . STRING UP SOME LIGHTS. Add some string lights across the patio for great Mediterranean bistro ambiance at night. Add a timer so the lights pop on and off automatically.

5 . PLACE LANTERNS AROUND THE SPACE. Romantic and ethereal, candle lanterns set artfully around a seating area, next to a chair or on a dining table are uber-romantic and create a layered lighting effect.

6. ELECTRIFY IT. Install a sound system or electrical outlets to enjoy TV on the patio. With Wi-Fi-enabled speakers and televisions, you can turn your patio into an outdoor living room.

7. ADD WATER. Create a patio fountain out of a planter. Cluster a grouping of plants around an urn, pop in a fountain pump from your home center, and you have a terrific sound that’s peaceful and can help drown out background noise.

8. GET UNIQUE SEATING. Make lounging outdoors more inviting with a swinging bed hung from the ceiling or a pair of swinging rattan chairs. They’re trendy and will be the seat everyone wants to sit in when you go outside.

9. RE-CUSHION CHAIRS AND COUCHES. Patio cushions take a beating from the elements and the sun, so replace to refresh and update your patio. Mix solid seat cushions with patterned throw pillows for a homey feeling.

10. ADD SHADE OR STRUCTURE. If your patio is flat and exposed, it’s time to add an arbor or string up some sunshade fabric that will give you much needed shade and help you enjoy more time outdoors comfortably.

After being cooped up in the house, a patio project is the perfect way to get some fresh air and prepare for the summer months ahead.

Ceiling fans are notorious dust-collectors and sitting stationary for a few months really gives dirt a chance to settle. Fortunately, giving your fan a quick clean before you turn it on for the season is simple.

One way is to tackle dust with an extendable, microfiber duster. Before you start, put a sheet on the floor or over any furniture beneath the fan to catch wayward dust balls. If you’re comfortable on a step stool or ladder, try this popular pillowcase hack instead: Place a clean pillowcase over one blade at a time and then carefully slide it off, trapping the dust inside. Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe dust from other parts of the fan as well as the lightbulbs. If your fan has glass shades, soak them in warm, soapy water and dry completely before putting them back on.

With cabinets, gentle cleaning is best, so skip the abrasive products and use a solution of warm water and dish soap. First, empty your cabinets and drawers and vacuum up crumbs and debris using a crevice attachment. Next, wet a soft cloth with the soap and water solution and wring it out until it is just damp. Wipe down the inside and outside of the cabinets as well as handles or knobs. Don’t forget to go over frames or trim where grime can accumulate. Follow with a cloth slightly dampened with plain water to rinse and then dry thoroughly with another soft cloth. Use a glass cleaner on any glass cabinet fronts.

SELECT THE perfect WALLPAPER

The wall covering you choose can make a room appear bigger, warmer and brighter (or vice versa) and even hide imperfect elements. So it makes sense to spend a little time consider the best option for your walls and for your house.

Take a cue from color.

Color can set the mood in a room. To make a space appear larger and the ceiling higher, pick patterns with cool-color backgrounds, such as green, blue or violet. Soft cool colors suggest tranquility, while intense cool colors are fresh and dramatic. Warm colors – reds, yellows and oranges – live up to their name and make people feel warmer. These are a popular choice in colder climates and work well in north-facing rooms. The more intense the color, the more excitement it will give to a room.

Play with light.

In a north-facing room, dark hallway or windowless space, look for wall coverings that will reflect light around the room, such as patterns with light colors and those with metallic or iridescent inks. Also consider patterns with smooth surfaces, which reflect maximum light. Dark colors absorb light, making walls appear closer and the room smaller. Textured surfaces also tend to make a wall look darker.

Stripes and other vertical patterns, which emphasize height, suggest dignity, vitality and formality. Vertical patterns, including florals where the motif’s shape suggests a V or a U, will make a ceiling appear higher. Horizontal patterns accent width, suggest quietness and repose, and make narrow rooms appear wider.

Scale for success.

Small-scale patterns create a feel of spaciousness, while large-scale designs make rooms more intimate. To make an empty room look more furnished, pick largescale patterns with bright colors and dark backgrounds. To give flat walls the look of depth, try a large, open dimensional pattern, such as a trellis design.

Mix and match wisely.

A room without pattern can bore, while a room with too many patterns can cause restlessness. When mixing stripes, florals or plaids in a room or between adjacent areas, pick patterns that repeat the same color or values of that color. Wall-covering books usually group designs by color to make coordinating easy.

MUST-HAVE TIPS FOR REMODELING YOUR KITCHEN

Remodeling a kitchen requires a lot of effort (and cash). Avoid making costly mistakes with these expert tips for every aspect of your design – from islands to floor plans and everything in between.

1.

PLAN THE SPACE.

Even in big kitchens, you’ll want to create a compact step-saving work core. You don’t want to walk a mile to make a meal, or even worse, generate dead space within the room. Pick areas that will work hard during meal prep, dining and family time. A breakfast nook, for example, is the perfect way to add style without sacrificing too many steps.

2. MEASURE!

Kitchen aisles need to be wide enough to accommodate all that goes on in a kitchen. Clearance helps multiple cooks navigate the space and maneuver around each other. When designing your new kitchen, make sure all aisles – such as those between islands, walls and appliances –are between 42 and 48 inches wide. Also consider offsetting the placement of key features, such as sinks and the range, so two cooks don’t bump into one another.

ENSURE IT’S FUNCTIONAL.

When planning the space, consider the size and direction of doors, appliances and cabinets. Fridges often need wide clearance, as do ovens. Take a walk through the space and plan door openings to ensure that you don’t create a cramped kitchen.

4. BUY AN ISLAND (OR TWO).

In a big room, two islands are often better than one. It’s a mistake to supersize an island, because anything longer than 10 feet is hard to walk around. Also, if an island is more than 4 feet deep, it’s hard to reach the middle. Overstuffing an island with dinnerware, baskets and other items creates a similar problem. Make sure no island storage extends beyond the rim of the countertop.

5. PUT IN A PENINSULA.

In a small kitchen, a small peninsula often works better than an island. Keep your space in mind every step of the way to ensure the best remodel possible. Don’t overwhelm a small space; there are options available for a variety of sizes and layouts.

6. PLAN AHEAD.

Get all your ducks in a row before you begin your kitchen remodel. Delays and changes midstream can send costs soaring. Do your homework and consider each choice ahead of time. Be sure to check that everything has arrived before the contractor is ready to install.

7. CHOOSE STORAGE WISELY.

A good design includes storage solutions that match items used in specific areas. Between open storage, cabinets, shelves and more, there are hundreds of options available. Consider the goal of the remodel: If you are going for a sleek look and choose glass cabinet doors, keep the cabinet contents streamlined and unfussy, as well.

8. INCLUDE SPACE FOR ENTERTAINING.

Whatever a kitchen’s size, expect friends and family to congregate there. People are drawn to other people, and your guests don’t want to be hanging out in the living room while you’re preparing dinner. Plan for interactive space in your new kitchen – whether that’s a corner nook, island with seating or a banquette.

9.

BRING HOME SAMPLES

Materials can look a lot different in a showroom than they do in your actual space. Don’t commit to any major design element –such as flooring or countertops – until you’ve brought the samples home to look at in the space you’re remodeling. You may also want to look at samples under lighting similar to what will be used in the new space.

RENOVATING AN OLD HOUSE? YOU’LL NEED A GOOD CHECKLIST

It was just after sunrise and a large sewer project forced me to detour across a street I’d never been on before. As luck would have it, I happened upon an old Victorian house that had seen far better days just as the earlymorning sun was giving her a tender morning kiss. It brought back vivid memories of the first old house I ever bought and renovated.

I survived with the help of a few phone calls to my boss. It was a humbling experience as I discovered you don't know what

If I had known then what I know now after all these years of working in old homes for paying customers, I don’t know if I would have bought it. To be sure, visions of grandeur were dancing in my head – and in my new bride’s as well – much as they did in Mr. Blandings’ head in the old Cary Grant movie.

It’s also important that the house’s framing, or bones, are in great shape with no cracks, wood rot or insect damage. The carpenters of old knew how to keep wood in great shape, and most made prudent use of simple tar paper to keep the structure dry for decades.

Here are a few things that you should think about if you’re about to go all-in on an old house as I did back on that warm spring day:

First and foremost, make sure the house has a great foundation. Just recently, my son was thinking of buying an old house and he sent me a photo of a diagonal crack extending from the corner of a basement window down to the floor. The house was almost 100 years old. The crack was less than 1/16 inch in width, there was no evidence of water seepage and the concrete was not offset.

What I lacked was a comprehensive checklist that would have helped me identify possible trouble spots and definite dealbreakers.

Building a new interior wall in an existing house can be much different from doing it on a new home job site. When we carpenters build a wall for a new home, we typically build it flat on the floor. Once all the studs are nailed to the bottom and top plates, we tilt the wall up and secure it so it doesn't fall over.

Next, carefully assess the mechanical systems. The presence of cast-iron plumbing stacks needn’t worry you, especially if you can see the cast letters XH on the pipe. These letters indicate that pipe is extra heavy and might last for hundreds of years so long as the previous homeowners didn’t put liquid drain cleaners down the pipes.

If you do see cast-iron plumbing vertical pipes, it almost certainly means you’ll have smaller horizontal galvanized pipes that drain sinks, showers and possibly tubs. These pipes will almost always be in poor shape and require replacement.

Don’t underestimate the cost to retrofit your heating and cooling

system. Many very old houses simply don’t have the supply and return air registers in the correct locations. My first house had all the supply vents located on the inside of the house. Decades ago HVAC pros discovered it’s best to flood exterior walls with either heated air in the winter and cool air in the summer. That means the return air registers must be across the room on inside walls. I doubt you’ll see this setup on a house built in 1905!

If there is no ceiling, you can tilt the wall up so long as you orient the wall in the same direction as the floor joists above. You simply make sure the top of the wall rises up in between two parallel floor joists. Once the wall is vertical, you can then slide it into position under

You don’t have to get rid of it, but you most definitely need to understand how to work with it so you don’t get poisoned or poison a loved one. Even scraping exterior lead paint is an issue, as you can contaminate soil you may use for a vegetable garden. Never ever sand lead paint.

Realize that you can match both interior and exterior wood trim if you’ve got a big budget. Oldfashioned lumberyards in your area might have their own mill, or they may know of a local one that can cut new knives that will create matching profiles for all the fancy woodwork inside or outside your home. ©2022 Tim Carter.
