VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM REFRESH with Merryman Barnes Architects 2017

Role in the Project Conceptual Design

11

- Color & Graphic study Schematic Design - Graphic study, Diagram & Rendering

While the building still boldly embodies the architectural ideals of Mid Century Modernism, after fifty years from its completion, it was in need of revitalization. Critical deferred maintenance elements of the entry lobby and main concourse were identified as the areas where renovations would make the most positive impact on the visitor experience prior to PK80-Phil Knight Invitational in November 2017. The addition of bold graphics simply attached to the existing walls adds powerful references to the building’s historic uses for sports, music events, and public gatherings. These graphics are supplemented by significant upgrades to the entry lobby to remove extraneous additions, to improve the entry and exit flow and to reenergize the concession operations.

THESIS: COMMUNITY HOME FOR LEFT BEHIND BRIDGE THE GAP CHILDREN AND ELDERLY IN GUANG AN VILLAGE Creating a center to support the care of “left behind” children and elderly in rural China M.ARCH 2016

13

Rural China has been experiencing an unprecedented rise in the phenomenon known as “left behind children.” This phenomenon describes the difficult situation for many rural, poor families in which one or both parents, seeking decent-paying jobs in the cities, elect to leave their children in the care of extended or adopted families during the periods of migrant work. China’s much-hated hukou system registers families as either rural or urban. Most migrants can’t change their household registration when they move. They struggle to access healthcare and other social services in urban areas. Their children can’t go to public schools -- even if they are born in the cities. The periods of separation between parents and children can last several months at a time, sometimes becoming a nearly permanent situation. This phenom-

enon is not new to rural communities under modern, global industrialism, but has become a concerning and growing trend in rural China in recent days. “Left behind children” are defined by a number of different care-giver scenarios; the children may be in the care of one parent, grandparents or with other relatives. Older children might be left to care for themselves, but most often it is the grandparents and elderly, those who still remain in the rural community, that must shoulder this new responsibility. In all cases, families are split apart and the left behind children and elderly are asked to adapt to the new circumstances with few resources to aid them. They are forced to redefine the concept of “home”.

DESGIN - BUILD

PARKLET M.ARCH 2015

This Fourth Avenue Parklet was designed and built by Architecture students. Students were assigned to different aspects of the project and given the chance to design details and to build them around the existing Food Cart area. We were first assigned to install the base structure and floor. I first worked on the metal piece both cutting and drilling. Then, within the wood group, I was responsible for wood staining and bench assembling. When completed, we moved them to the site for assembly in the field.

17

The Fourth Avenue Parklet provides an attractive gathering place and seating area for more than two dozen diners and neighbors at the popular food cart pod on Southwest Fourth between College and Hall Streets. Main Features: •768 linear feet of sustainably harvested juniper•3,475 pounds of steel •250 linear feet of repurposed escalator handrail •Drought-resistant native plants
