Successful consultation on major new development in Wrexham WWHA has been given the go-ahead for a major new development of high quality, affordable new homes in Wrexham. Councillor Mark Pritchard, Wrexham’s Lead Member for Housing and Planning said: “This project has been progressing extremely well and I am delighted that the site has been approved for affordable housing. It is important that we provide good quality, affordable homes for local people and this development will allow us to meet an ever growing demand. You really are Making A Difference! To anyone who might be feeling that little bit jaded after a soggy summer that seemed dominated by bad news, this list of nominees for our Making A Difference Awards should really lift your spirits. Our MAD Awards recognise and celebrate community spirit and this year we have a whopping 72 individuals and projects from across Wales whose selfless efforts make day-to-day life so much better for their neighbours and communities. Shortlisted nominees have been contacted by letter telling them of the good news and can now look forward to a gala dinner and ceremony in Cardiff City Hall on Friday, October 14th where the winners will be revealed. “Our MAD Awards are now in their fourth year and this year the standard is even higher than ever,” said Anne Hinchey, WWHA’s Chief Executive. “Congratulations to everyone who has been shortlisted. And we’ve been shortlisted for five top industry awards too! WWHA is celebrating a hat-trick in this year’s Welsh Housing Awards with three entries shortlisted for these top industry awards. Bridgend-based scheme manager Lucy Clewlow has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. Merthyr Tydfil-based WWHA Board member David Davies has been shortlisted in the Housing Hero category after being nominated by Ty Pontrhun Residents’ Association. And the WWHA team behind Stoneleigh Manor More Options Homelessness Project in Powys have been shortlisted for the ‘Making Best Use of Stock’ award. “I can’t believe that I have been shortlisted,” said Lucy Clewlow, scheme manager at WWHA’s Cwrt Anghorfa retirement complex in Pyle, Bridgend. “I wanted to complete the course so much, I just did what was necessary in the circumstances. I am really, really thrilled!” Sarah O’Keefe, Supporting People Officer with WWHA, led the Stoneleigh Manor project, which provides a stateof-the-art fresh start for people facing homelessness in Powys. “On behalf of WWHA and key strategic partners in commissioning Stoneleigh Manor we are really pleased to have been shortlisted,” said Sarah, who worked in partnership with Powys County Council (Supporting People and Homeless Prevention and Housing Options Team) and Cefni Lettings on this ground-breaking initiative. WWHA Board member David Davies said “We’ve got a flourishing Residents’ 8

Association here at Ty Pontrhun, and I think the whole thing is a reflection of how good Wales & West really is.” The overall winners will be revealed on Friday, November 25th, at a red carpet ceremony in The Vale Resort. In addition to these three shortlisted entries in the Welsh Housing Awards, WWHA also has its Powell Road EcoFriendly Regeneration Project in Flintshire shortlisted for a top CIH UK Housing Award. The winner will be revealed in the Hilton Park Lane, London, on November 9th. And ... our retirement scheme Sydney Hall Court in Connah’s Quay, run by scheme manager Rob Holmes, has been shortlisted for The Cinnamon Trust’s Pet Friendly Care Home of the Year Award. The winner will be revealed on October 12th at the Lanesborough Hotel, Hyde Park Corner, London. Anne Hinchey, our Chief Executive said: “I am thrilled for everyone who been been shortlisted for these prestigious awards. “We are all very proud of them and are keeping everything crossed for them on the night.”

Supporting Clubs for Young People Wales THE Board of Wales & West Housing Association has donated £3,500 to Clubs for Young People Wales to support their work for young people nationwide. Our Chief Executive Anne Hinchey and Ivor Gittens, Chair of WWHA’s Board, spent time with teenagers and staff at CYP’s club house in Bettws, Bridgend, before presenting Chief Executive Joff Carroll with a cheque. “Clubs for Young People Wales do a great job in supporting and encouraging the talents of thousands of youngsters, whatever their interest and ability,” said Ivor. “WWHA’s Board is delighted to be able to support them in this work through a donation of £3,500.” Clubs For Young People Wales is a registered charity, which offers help and support to youth clubs/groups/ sports clubs. This is done by offering constructive youth projects, numerous sporting opportunities, training and more. Former CYP members include boxers Joe Calzaghe and Nathan Cleverly, Lynn “The Leap” Davies, footballer John Hartson and entertainers Max Boyce and Owen Money. Founded as Treharris Boys’ Club in 1922, CYP has grown beyond its original aims to support the welfare and social development of adolescent ‘collier boys’ during the post-World War 1 economic hardships. Re-launched as a charity in 1992, and renamed as CYP in 2006, it now supports projects in dozens of clubs around Wales including sports, drama and arts and crafts for boys – and girls. Joff Carroll, Chief Executive CYP Wales, said: “Clubs for Young People Wales are delighted to be chosen as Wales and West HA’s Board charity of the year.

Solar PV… work in progress You will have read in the last edition of In Touch that we are starting work on a big project to install solar panels,which will help cut fuel bills by providing some free electricity during the daytime – all generated by daylight.

We are working with a company called Solarcentury and they have carried out initial surveys using satellite data on most of our properties to identify whether they might be suitable to have solar panels installed. Should the initial satellite surveys indicate that your property might be suitable, we will contact you to arrange a convenient time for a more detailed survey of your property. We are currently contacting an initial sample of some 250 residents in Brackla, Bridgend, the Caerau area of Cardiff and Barracksfield in Wrexham and we will be contacting more residents over the next few months. Please be patient if you haven’t heard from us yet. We want to enable as many residents as possible to benefit from some free daytime electricity. Unfortunately the reality is that only about 1 in 4 properties will be suitable for the 10

installation of solar panels. Some common reasons why this may be include unsuitable orientation or shape of roof, shading from nearby trees or other buildings, a velux window installed after the initial satellite survey, small items of roof furniture that were not visible by satellite and unsuitable internal structure. We have produced a Q&A booklet and will be producing more information which will help residents get the best use of the free electricity generated by the panels. Our thanks go to those Group 500 members, who are helping us write and design this information. So please watch this space for more information about solar PV. “I’m delighted with my new bathroom” “I moved into West Lee, Cardiff, 30 years ago when it was owned by Western Permanent Housing” WWHA resident Mrs Brenda Williams told us (pictured below in her new bathroom). “I was notified that I would be getting a new bathroom as part of WWHA’s planned maintenance works and was given a choice of tiles and floor covering. “The workmen were lovely and went to work straight away on the Monday. I just gave them the key and asked them to get on with it - I even had an electric upgrade. They took less than a week and cleared up after themselves. We wanted to paint the bathroom ourselves and choose our own colours so we were given a Dulux decoration allowance/paint pack, which has everything we needed to decorate including the brushes. “The contractors came to inspect the completed bathroom and asked if I was happy with everything, and yes I am very happy with my lovely new bathroom and how it was installed.”

We wanted to find out what you think of our plans so we sent a survey to members of Group 500. Some 48 members took the time to reply – thank you all! – your feedback was invaluable. You raised a number of issues with us including (and in no particular order): Building communities • I’d like more self-help ideas from WWHA – things like how to reduce litter, and make better use of gardening plots for growing food. •C an you, if possible, provide more jobs for young residents. • I’m confused over who does what. Can you clarify the roles and responsibilities of key staff. For example, what is the difference between a scheme manager and a housing manager? And what are the responsibilities of an asset management officer and site supervisor?

•W ho does your maintenance and what areas do they cover? How to get a home •H ow do your allocate your properties? How do you get the ‘right’ person to get the ’right property’ •W hat is a common housing register? And why do you allocate some properties to people on council waiting lists? • I ’d like more information on the right to buy here are you developing new •W houses? Getting involved •A re we over-estimating the amount of interest residents have in getting involved with WWHA. A typical comment here was: “You’re great service providers, but how many residents want to be involved with WWHA?” •H ow do you monitor your plans to show residents that you do what you say you are going to do?

Where we are developing now… Developing more high quality, affordable, sustainable homes for people in Wales is a major priority for WWHA. Our current 3 year development programme includes innovative projects for residents with autism and learning difficulties, together with general needs housing and extra care facilities. The programme is supported by £15m social housing grant funding from our partner local authorities and the Welsh Government. Amongst WWHA’s developments currently on site, or shortly to go on site across Wales, are: •K ingsmills Road / Rivulet Road, Wrexham - This £15m development will provide 150 mixed tenure affordable houses and apartments for the community including dedicated homes for older people, plus a community centre and replacement clinic. Outline planning permission has already been granted and it is envisaged that work will commence on site early 2012. onciau School redevelopment, •P Wrexham. This £2.65m development programme will provide 15 new family homes (three bungalows and 12 houses) plus six bungalows for people with autism and their carers. Contractor Wates Living Space commenced work in September 2010. (completion October 2011 part of site handed over 19 September) lys Jasmin, Mold, Flintshire •L – This £8.5m development will provide a 61 apartment extra care and dementia complex plus an additional two extra care bungalows in Flintshire. Contractor Linfords commenced work August 2011. 14

•L lys Binwyddyn Supported housing scheme, Mold, Flintshire. This £1m development is a supported living and independent living project in partnership with Flintshire County Council which will provide 6 specialist units of accommodation catering for a range of needs and capabilities. The independent living flats are now occupied and the group homes providing accommodation for residents with autistic spectrum disorders were occupied in September 2011. •H enllan Autism Project, Denbighshire Phase One of this £1.05m development will provide specialist accommodation for people with a range of autistic spectrum disorders, plus people with physical disabilities - and their carers. Phase Two will provide affordable housing for families in the area. We’re working in partnership with Denbighshire County Council on this project and work will commence on site in September 2011. Contractor Anwyl. •L ion Street, Brecon, Powys – 26 affordable family homes in the architecturally sensitive area of Brecon town centre. Wates Living Space commenced work in October 2010 and the scheme is shortly to be completed. (October 2011) •C wmfalldau, Llanfaes, Brecon, Powys - 16 affordable family homes are being developed by Lovell Partnerships for WWHA as part of their larger development at the site. Completion will be phased over the next year. •L lanbedr, Powys – this development of 8 houses is currently with Brecon Beacons National Park Planning

The scheme has been designed in partnership with Powys County Council and the local community council. •M aes Halley, Powys – we’ve teamed up with Lovell to deliver 16 new homes for intermediate rent at Maes Halley, Parc Dewi Sant, Llanfaes, Brecon. •V ulcan House, Merthyr Tydfil – WWHA has been working with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council for the past four years to enable the redevelopment of this Grade 2 listed

building which is adjacent to our recently competed Brewery Court and Brewery Mews development, also on the former Vulcan Brewery site. This £1.8m scheme is currently with MTCBC Planning department for approval and work is anticipated to start on site in early 2012. Nikki Cole, WWHA’s Head of Development, said: “We relish the opportunity to provide housing solutions to meet a wide variety of housing requirements.”

Crug Consultation, Powys WWHA, along with Powys County Council, helped Brecon Town Councillors and Crug Residents’ Association to hold a fun-filled and very informative consultation event at Brecon Youth Centre on August 26th. During the day more than 35 consultation forms were completed by people at the Fun Day, including several young people. Questions were based on issues to be addressed, possible solutions and what residents could do to help deliver them. Each time a form was returned the person who’d filled it in could choose an item from the promotional goodies on offer on the Association’s stand as a ‘thank you’ for their input.

Items included Hoola Hoops, pencil sharpeners, Frisbees, pack of colouring

pencils, note books, soft balls etc. Fun was provided by way of face painting and the presence of Tropical Inc – an organisation that introduces young people to wildlife and helps them understand their needs. As well as the usual snakes and tarantula spiders, there was a Jennet (South American Cat) pictured left with Housing Assistant Liz Daniels, a skunk and a variety of Macaw parrots – a species originally from South America. There was even a hedgehog who was rescued as a baby and can’t be returned to the wild but her babies are returned to appropriate gardens around the country each year. WWHA’s team also handed out 26 energy saving packs to residents on qualifying benefits. www.wwha.net

‘Getting by with a little help from my friends’ Could you do with a little extra help with a community project or activity? Do you think you or your community could benefit from our skills? Do you simply need a bit of extra people power to help make positive changes in your neighbourhood? If so, take a look at our new ‘Staff Community Day’ initiative. All WWHA staff are encouraged and supported to give their time to our communities or a relevant charitable cause. Now, with the launch of our Staff Community Day initiative each and every member of staff can donate up to one day per year from their usual role to an appropriate voluntary activity in your communities. Our staff can do it as individuals or in groups. Our contractor partners can be involved or we can get stuck in with an externally organised event with our community partners. This isn’t all new to WWHA. Previous volunteering projects undertaken by WWHA staff have included redecorating the Scout Hut in Trowbridge, Cardiff, and decorating the Community House in Mount View, Merthyr Vale. The Scout Hut initiative saw staff cutting grass, trimming hedges and picking up litter, as well as painting the 16

inside throughout. Display boards were replaced, the exterior of the building painted and the entrance porch was also renovated. Scout Leader Mary Griffiths told us at the time: “I couldn’t believe it was all being done for free. The hall is absolutely superb, we’ve never had so much done for us, it’s like a new home. It’s a wonderful sight and we can’t thank WWHA enough.” During November in 2010 another group of volunteers, as well as a contractor who provided tools, materials, expertise and professional advice, repaired and decorated a Community House in Mount View, Merthyr Vale. “After their hard work our staff feel a great sense of accomplishment and enjoy the fact that their volunteering really makes a difference, as you can see in these photographs,” said Giles Taylor, Human Resources Officer. A big ‘Thank You!’ We’d like to say a ‘Big Thank You’ to moneysupermarket.com who have provided residents with training and donated computers to upgrade the IT suite at Luke O’Connor House Resource Centre as part of the ‘Race-on-line’ project. WWHA’s Community Development Officer Vy Cochran was told by Deeside resident Jane who attended training at moneysupermarket in Ewloe, that she has saved £130 on her car insurance as a result of the training and using their comparison website. Llandudno resident Terry who had never used a computer said: “It’s marvellous the information on the internet; you can search for all sorts of

different things. I was very nervous at the thought of attending the two hour training session. However, the one-toone training from moneysupermarket volunteer trainer Jenny was fantastic. ComputerAid donation DOZENS of PCs are being re-routed – quite literally – to Third World countries thanks to Wales & West Housing Association and the charity ComputerAid. WWHA, one of the largest HAs in Wales, has donated 150 DELL OptiPlx GX280s from its Cardiff office and a further 25 from its North Wales base in Flint. Anne Hinchey, Chief Executive of WWHA, said, “We are upgrading our IT systems and wanted to not only recycle them but also do something really constructive with them, if possible. “ComputerAid seemed the perfect choice and we are delighted to have been able to donate so many working PCs to them.”

“By donating computers and monitors to Computer Aid International, organisations such as Wales and West Housing Association play a vital role in creating learning and employment opportunities in disadvantaged communities. Donating equipment to a charity such as Computer Aid for reuse is free, easy and straightforward, and guarantees compliance with data security and WEEE legislation”.

Successful skip amnesty St Mellons Compact organised a very successful skip amnesty on July 18th and many residents in this area of Cardiff took advantage of five large free skips to get rid of unwanted items. More than 50 households saved thanks to our mortgage rescue scheme MORE THAN 50 households from across Wales have been saved from having their homes repossessed thanks to our mortgage rescue scheme. The Association recently completed our 50th mortgage rescue deal, having invested more than £2m in the scheme so far. “We first became involved in the Welsh Assembly mortgage rescue scheme in January 2009,” said Anne Hinchey, WWHA’s Chief Executive. “Since then we have worked across Wales to assist many families at risk of losing their homes and have invested a considerable amount of our own money into the scheme. We also work closely with local authorities and debt advice agencies to ensure stable financial futures for our applicants. “In these very challenging economic times getting sound financial advice is vital to us all, and we are proud to play a big part in this, through our mortgage rescue scheme and also our wider financial inclusion programme.” Under the terms of WWHA’s mortgage rescue scheme eligible applicants who are at risk of having their home repossessed either sell their property

to WWHA and remain living in the property as a tenant of the Association or they may receive a loan from WWHA which enables them to retain ownership of their property. Worried about your council tax arrears? Over the past few months we have heard from a number of residents who have fallen into Council Tax arrears. Council Tax is known as a ‘priority’ debt (along with your rent), meaning that you face the worst consequences if you fail to pay. With Council Tax this would usually mean a bailiff calling at your home to remove any items of value or an order being attached to your wages. You will also be liable for legal costs involved. 20

But this is entirely avoidable if you make sure you contact your local council if you are struggling to pay. They will be able to advise you of your options, which may be spreading your payments over 12 months rather than the traditional 10 months or agreeing to a more affordable payment plan. Early action will make problems a lot easier to resolve than trying to react when a bailiff knocks at your door! So don’t hesitate to contact us for advice and help if you find yourself in arrears.

Reducing the risk of trips and falls Many injuries in the home are caused by trips and falls with older people and children more at risk. Keep an eye on play areas, both at home and when you are out, to check for potential danger areas. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) can help you to make your home safer for children.

Going Green

Inspired Dave is going green the Cuban way CUBAN growing methods designed to get the most out of every square inch of soil have inspired one Wales & West Housing Association resident to start growing his own.

Dave Farrah, pictured above, who lives in Lord Pontypridd House, Canton, Cardiff, has recently visited Cuba, one of the last Communist countries in the world. Adopting a self-sufficient approach since the American blockade of 1962, the Cubans have become adept at using their limited land as effectively as possible to meet the food requirements of their nation. Now Dave is adapting Cuban’s techniques to grow his own fruit and veg at the popular retirement scheme in Canton with one of his biggest successes to date being his edible rockery. “I like to grow things,” said Dave, “and Wales & West have helped me out with some tools, soil and equipment using their new Environmental Fund, and that’s been it. “I really hit it off with Owen, Wales & West’s environmental chap and realized we were singing from the same hymn sheet. I love the garden and it’s good to 22

grow what you can.” “Dave has converted an old disused rockery into an edible landscape. Just one example is a 30p packet of seeds, which in Dave’s hands, have resulted in dozens of lovely lettuces for his fellow residents at Lord Pontypridd House,” said Owen Jones, WWHA’s Environment and Sustainability Officer. Wet weather fails to dampen spirits at Coed-y-Dderwen WWHA staff attended the Fun Day at Coedy-Dderwen School, Gellideg, Merthyr Tydfil, to help with fund raising efforts for the local school children. We donated a Bear for Name the Bear raffle which was won by Mayor Paul Brown. Cllr Brown said the Bear named ‘Pedlar’ after a local historian and former Mayor from Cyfarthfa Ward ‘Would be re-raffled for the Mayors charity which this year is Macmillan Nurses’. We also donated a £25 Argos voucher for a raffle prize and gave £100 to help purchase food for the BBQ & sweet stall. Alison Chaplin, our Community Development Project Officer for the area said: “We gave away 20 energy saving packs on the day to those people on qualifying benefits.

Eve sorry to leave West Lee Yvonne (Eve Benson) was very sad to retire after nearly 30yrs as cleaner at West Lee, Cardiff. She was very surprised about the party her family had organised and was shocked at the lovely flowers and gifts both staff and residents gave her. She was highly though of at West Lee by residents and staff alike. Sunny Fun Day at Brackla On Saturday 2nd July the sun was out for residents and staff to enjoy the Brackla Fun Day held behind Brackla Primary School in Bridgend. The day was very well attended and it was good to see so many local children enjoying a fun day out with families. The activities ranged from wall climbing, circus skills, bouncy castle and lots more for all ages. Residents and friends from Tˆ y Pontrhun day trip by the sea On Tuesday the 26th July residents from Tˆ y Pontrhun as well as local residents went on a trip to Swansea and the Mumbles. The less able and wheel chair users were catered for with the Globe Co. adapted coaches. Alec Anderson, treasurer of the Residents’ Association said “It was a really nice morning and everyone was looking forward to an enjoyable day out. We stopped in Swansea for a little shopping and lunch then went on to Mumbles where we sat overlooking the sea eating ice-cream and drinking coffee”.

“It turned out to be a really warm day and our residents and friends from the village thoroughly enjoyed themselves on their summer trip”.

Oak Court Penarth 20th Anniversary party On the very sunny morning of 3rd August, WWHA staff decided to surprise everyone by dressing up as Alice in Wonderland characters and helped residents by handing out food and drinks on their special 20th Anniversary day. As well as a delicious buffet of pastries, sausage rolls and fairy cakes provided by the residents, a fantastic cake stole the show. The best hat competition was won by Beryl Wilkinson. Photographs of residents in their younger days were on show and everyone had to try and put a name to them. Not an easy task, but it caused a lot of laughs. Sally, Scheme Manager said “It was very nice to see everyone enjoying themselves on this very special day. It was great fun dressing up”.

Sylvester Court Celebration of Volunteers Lesley Griffiths AM attended Sylvester Court to present 25 individual volunteers with a cut-crystal glass to acknowledge the enormous support each had dedicated to their local community. Speaking highly of the excellent work undertaken, Lesley commented that when making presentations at various events, she often refers to Hightown resident Sian as a shining example of someone who has blossomed over the past ten years through volunteering. Audrey Hartland, vice Chair of Hightown Communities First, said: “During my time with Communities First, I have been privileged to have achieved more

than I ever thought I was capable of. Volunteering has been a confidence building experience and I would certainly recommend it. I promise you will get more back than you give.” Audrey thanked her lovely volunteers from Sylvester Court Lunch Club for their utter devotion in helping to make it the success that it is. Operation Christmas Child Over the last 8 years Wales & West Housing Association staff with the help of residents, family and friends have helped send over 1,000 Christmas shoeboxes filled with toys, games and items of clothing to help raise a smile and make a difference to children on Christmas Day. The empty boxes are covered with colourful Christmas wrapping paper and are stuffed full of goodies before marking them either for a girl or boy between the ages of 2 and 14 years old. For all those who would like to help raise a smile on a child’s face this Christmas look at the list shown below to give you an idea of some of the items that go into the Christmas boxes for girls and boys. Small toys – dolls, cars, puzzles, games, playing cards, teddy bears, Clothes - Gloves/hat/scarf, socks – bought or knitted Toiletries – toothbrushes, toothpaste, flannels, soap. colour, shape or size. Help for Heroes Your generous donations have helped raise ÂŁ6,989.81 and the total amount is changing every day. As well as dress down days at both Cardiff and the Flint office, we also sold our old radiators for scrap and organised collections at our fun days. Residents and friends from many of the retirement schemes have been more than generous and continue to raise funds. As you can see we are always thinking of various ways to raise money, no matter how bizarre, for this very worthy cause. In the past the staff charity ran for one year only, but Wales & West Housing Association has now decided to change it to every other year which means that Help for Heroes will be the named charity until the end of 2012.

Bring & Buy sale for Help for Heroes In June Linda Oliver from Hanover Court, Whitchurch, Cardiff,arranged a bring and buy sale with the help of friends and residents. All the volunteers worked hard to make the day a success and raised a grand amount of ÂŁ234 for the charity. Plans are under way for another sale.

Celebratory Cards signed by the Queen & First Minister The Welsh Government and the Palace are routinely notified of people who are about to celebrate their 100th and 105th and every birthday after that by the Department of Works and Pensions. But did you know that the unit at the Welsh Government can also arrange to send congratulatory cards to couples celebrating their 60th, 65th, 70th and every wedding anniversary after that from the First Minister. The office below can also notify the Palace so that the message may be sent from the Queen and the Secretary of State’s office as well. This process is not automatic and in order to arrange this they would need to be notified a couple of weeks before

Gentleman Tom reaches 90yrs young on 28th June Tom said “I have been fortunate and lucky with the people I worked with but I don’t have a real secret to a happy life other than laugh lots and live well. When I saw the flat for the first time I instantly knew that Great Western Court was where I wanted to live, and I have been here now for 12 years” Tom started life working as a marine engineer for 24yrs then decided he wanted a change and went to work in the dry docks on the boats. He decided that this wasn’t for him so he moved

Glamorous Peggy enjoys her party Peggy celebrated her 91st birthday on 2nd August 2011 at St. Catherine’s Court. She has lived at the scheme since it was first opened, 22 years ago. She has enjoyed many happy years at the scheme despite losing many of her closest friends. Peggy has had poor health for many years but still enjoys a party. The photo shows her enjoying a small glass of sherry with other residents at the scheme. The party food was prepared by her sister Jean and family who live next door. 32

Friends at Western Court, Bridgend, celebrate together Betty, Al and Freda who tried to keep her birthday a secret, decided to cut a cake to celebrate their birthdays. All had their 80+ birthdays this year. Cutting the cake turned into a party when someone decided to open a bottle. But as we know the best parties are those held on the spur of the moment!

Happy Birthday Vera 99 years young On the 2nd September Vera Vaughan celebrated her 99th birthday at Christchurch Court, Llandrindod Wells, with a buffet laid out in the communal lounge. Vera is a ‘local’ girl and was one of six children. She attended the County School and on leaving Vera had been determined to move to London. Her wish was fulfilled when she started a two-

year training apprenticeship in drapery. Vera had always wanted to be a nurse and spent a lot of time writing to various hospitals before she was finally accepted at the King’s College Hospital in the 1930’s. After a few years Vera moved to Buxton, Derbyshire, working in a clinic that dealt with rheumatic complaints, but unfortunately the Second World War then broke out and this put pay to Vera’s plans. Vera moved back to Llandrindod and was employed by the Civil Nursing Reserve, before joining the Queen Alexandra’s Corps in 1941; this enabled her to travel to Palestine, Egypt, Tripoli and Italy. During her time in Rome she was blessed by Pope Pius XII. After the war Vera and her sisters opened a drapery shop, M.E. & V. Vaughan. As a member of the women’s section of the British Legion she represented Brecon and Radnor at a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and met the Queen Mother. She also presented a purse to Princess Margaret at the Royal Albert Hall and during her lifetime she has helped with many voluntary organisations in the area. Vera has been a resident at Christchurch Court for twenty eight years and has seen many changes. www.wwha.net
