INTRODUCTORY PROJECT

This project is an opportunity to define spaces through the creation of structures. The project entails “doing something� based on an interpretation (an understanding) of particular variables and/or constants. Specifically, an interpretation of the poem, The Glass Bubbles by Samuel Greenberg, is to serve as the basis for design choices made in designing a trough and its path as it coveys water into, through, and out of a cubic volume.

DRAWING EXERCISE In the beginning of the project, we were made to do an exercise that taught us how simple geometrical shapes can be translated into more complex forms with intricate details. When given the luxury of time, we were able to produce detailed drawings of plans, sections and elevations. However, as time became a constraint, the drawings became simplistic and minimal, with only the important lines and geometries drawn to define the object.

INTEREDIATE PROJECT

This project is an opportunity to transform spaces and volumes into rooms for habitation. Moreover, it is an occasion to consider an assemblage of the rooms in relation to themselves and their “next larger context”. Specifically, the design of the (your) Introductory Project is to serve as the basis for making rooms for habitation. Then, the assemblage of habitable rooms is to be located within the Waterloo Courtyard at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) as an architectural folly. The design of the folly is to consider the courtyard’s contextual issues, such as: the scale, the environmental conditions, and the rituals supported by the courtyard and museum.

41|Project Brief PART 1: SITE ANALYSIS (GROUP WORK)

FINAL PROJECT This site is an irregular plot of land of approximately 230m by 93m. It is bounded by the “Research Link” road to the Northeast, COM 1 and AS6 (with LT 14 & 15) buildings to the Southwest, Central Library and Forum to the Northwest. The site is terminated rather arbitrarily on the Southeast side by a flight of concrete staircase and walkway connecting to the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering.


Project Brief|42 PART 2: DIGITAL DETOXIFICATION SLOW FOOD CAFE The design is to include: 1. Indoor and semi-outdoor dining space of 100m2 that seats about 50-60 people. 2. A small gallery and entrance area of 40m2 for hosting small events like exhibition and talks on topics related to digital detoxification. 3. Kitchen, food preparation and storage area of 40m2. The design of the kitchen should support the dining philosophy. 4. Restrooms of up to 20m2. 5. An outdoor deck of up to 100 m2 open to the general public with a gazebo of not bigger than 15 m2.

Development of a strong concept was a tough process. Initial designs were lacking concepts although they tried to respond to the site by creating convenient and conducive spaces.

45|Process Sketches After several visits to the site, I was inspired by the serene and peaceful qualities the site posessed, and decided to engage this unique quality by programming an expressionist cafe; a cozy environment for customers to express their emotions.
