2020 GHSA STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Class 7A

Collins Hill vs. Grayson Wednesday, December 30 | 7:00 PM By Craig Sager II

C

COLLINS HILL 12-2, REGION 8 NO. 1 SEED

ollins Hill fell in the first round of three consecutive postseasons prior to reaching the finals for the first time in program history this season. The Eagles have accomplished this feat with a high-tempo offense and a disruptive defense capable of forcing turnovers and producing game changing plays. Leading the playmaking department is one of the most exciting players in the country—junior Travis Hunter. The five-star Florida State-commit has racked up 1,639 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns to go with his 48 tackles and team-high seven interceptions. Junior quarterback Sam Horn has tossed 12 touchdowns through the first four rounds of playoff action this season—including a season-high 371-yard performance in last week’s 31-14 victory over Lowndes. On the defensive line, look out for 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior defensive end James Smith—who has led the team with 171 tackles, 60 tackles for loss and 17 sacks this season.

GRAYSON 13-0, REGION 4 NO. 1 SEED

rayson is currently the No. 3 ranked team in the Maxpreps National Rankings and has been at the top of nearly every Class 7A poll for the majority of the year. The Rams have taken their dominance to the next level this postseason where they have stifled the competition with a massive 134-to-6 total margin of victory. Overall, Grayson’s defense has allowed just 7.5 ppg and has shutout four of its last five opponents. On the offensive side, the Rams have lit up the scoreboard with a 38.3 ppg average. This is despite the loss of starting running back and Clemson-signee Phil Mafah the past three rounds. Sophomore Joe Taylor has stepped up with touchdown runs in back-toback weeks and junior Sean Downer has found the endzone in each of the past three rounds. At quarterback is Miami-signee Jake Garcia, who has passed for 1,101 yards and 12 touchdowns in his seven games with the team.

DECEMBER 28-30, 2020

COLLINS HILL VS. GRAYSON CLASS 7A SKINNY Collins Hill and Grayson met earlier this season and the result was a 28-7 Rams victory. That game was scoreless at the half and tied 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter before Grayson put up 21 points to close it out. Grayson running back Phil Mafah dominated with 23 carries for 175 yards and three touchdowns, but will be sidelined with a leg injury for this rematch. As for the defense, Grayson managed to limit Collins Hill to its fewest points scored in any game this season and will look to do the same. By the time the game finished, the Rams had two interceptions, tallied eight sacks, forced three fumbles and blocked a field goal attempt.

BUFORD VS. LEE COUNTY CLASS 6A SKINNY

This will be the first-ever meeting between Lee County and Buford and this is largely due to the team’s competing in different classifications prior to this recent reclassification cycle. This is Buford’s 20th all-time finals appearance and Lee County’s third. The Wolves have gone 12-and-7 in their 19 in their previous championships, while the Trojans are 2-0 on the big stage. Buford overwhelmed Valdosta in the semifinals, but Lee County also had a big outing when they played Valdosta in their season finale on Nov. 13—picking up a 41-7 victory. Both the Wolves and Trojans are battle-tested heading into kickoff and this is a true battle of champions.

C A R T E R S V I L L E V S . WA R N E R R O B I N S CLASS 5A SKINNY For the Demons’ seniors – those who have been with the program since freshman year – know what it's like to make it to the state championship game in each year of their high school careers. And in each of those three appearances, the Demons have been left searching for the program’s fifth title. The Demons lost in the championship game in 2017 and 2018, first under Mike Chastain and last season in head coach Marquis Westbrooks’ first year. Can Cartersville return to glory in a new class? Cartersville won back-toback 4A titles in 2015 and 2016 under head coach Joey King and were led by Trevor Lawrence, Clemson’s national championship winning quarterback. In his last season, King coached the Hurricanes to the title game in 2018 before losing to Blessed Trinity. Last season, Conor Foster coached Cartersville to the quarterfinals in his inaugural season.

JEFFERSON 12-0, REGION 8 NO. 1 SEED

efferson sits one victory away from taking home its second state title after clinching its first-ever state title in 2012. The No. 2 ranked Dragons have topped No. 3 ranked Carver-Columbus (28-22) and No. 4 Benedictine (42-35) the past two rounds and their playoff gauntlet continues with their showdown against No. 1 Marist. Jefferson’s offense this season has lit up the scoreboard for 44 ppg and it is powered by the Dragons’ exceptional ground game that averages 285 yards per game. Spearheading this attack is five-star junior phenom Malaki Starks. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound junior has accounted for 11 passing touchdowns and 1,457 rushing yards to go with his 24 rushing scores. In Jefferson’s 42-35 semifinal win over Benedictine, Starks took a season-high 30 carries for 321 yards and four touchdowns and also completed two passes, including a 32-yard touchdown pass to junior Spencer Neese.

MARIST 12-0, REGION 6 NO. 1 SEED

arist’s defense has produced the most successful statistical season in the entire state this season. Just two of the War Eagles’ 12 opponents have scored touchdowns and the unit is allowing just 2.83 ppg. This defensive success is coupled with the disciplined offensive production that Marist is renowned for and the offense is putting up 37.4 ppg. In last week’s 42-0 win over Bainbridge, quarterback Champ Davis and fullback Andrew Mannelly both rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Davis found the end zone in the first and third quarters, and Mannelly rushed for a 12-yard touchdown in the second and another in the third to put Marist ahead 35-0 before it pulled its starters. Lincoln Parker also rushed for a goal-line touchdown in the first quarter for the War Eagles, and Preston Larmore capped the scoring with a 5-yard TD run with 8:14 remaining in the game.

DECEMBER 28-30, 2020

JEFFERSON VS. MARIST CLASS 4A SKINNY No. 1 Marist and No. 2 Jefferson faceoff for the first time in history and put their undefeated 12-0 records on the line. This matchup could end up being the most intriguing in all the classifications due to Marist’s outstanding defense being put to the test against Jefferson’s Malaki Starks led offense. Starks is the No. 4 rated player in the state for the Class of 2022 and is coming off a heroic five-touchdown performance in the semifinals. As for the Jefferson defense, the Dragons will have to account for the well-oiled machine that has been Marist’s offense throughout this season. Both teams will look to establish their ground games and field position will be a premium in this highly-anticipated battle.

2020 GHSA STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Class 3A

Oconee County vs. Pierce County Wednesday, December 30 | 12:00 PM By Seth Ellerbee

A

OCONEE COUNTY 12-0, REGION 8 NO. 1 SEED

T

PIERCE COUNTY 12-1, REGION 1 NO. 1 SEED

fter surviving a double-overtime thriller against Greater Atlanta Christian in the semifinals, Oconee County is battle-tested and resilient. Trailing 20-14 after GAC took the lead on the second possession of overtime, Oconee was facing fourth-and-16 from the 24-yard line when Jacob Wright passed to Justin Coleman on a 22-yarder to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Coleman one play later. The ensuing extra point was the difference. Wright leads an Oconee offense that averages 141 passing to 168 rushing yards per game. He is 84-of-158 passing for 1,505 yards and 20 touchdowns and has 51 carries for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Jake Johnson has 32 receptions for 742 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior Darius Johnson Jr. has 25 receptions for 386 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, senior Justin Coleman has 124 tackles, 85 assists and 39 solos with six tackles for a loss, three sacks and an interception. Senior West Weeks has 105 tackles, 42 solo and 63 assists. Sophomore Whit Weeks has 72 tackles with eight tackles for a loss and three interceptions.

he Bears’ semifinal victory over 2019 3A runner-up Crisp County at home to earn the program’s first-ever finals appearance has been dubbed the ‘Miracle in Bearsville’ and it was miraculous. Trailing 13-9 entering the fourth quarter and 13-12 in the final minutes, Pierce forced two fumbles – one returned 60 yards and one recovered in the endzone – to stun the Cougars. Ty Little caused the first fumble which Austin Jernigan returned for a touchdown and John Manghir forced the second fumble that DJ Bell recovered in the endzone. The Bears’ offense is led by 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior quarterback Jermaine Brewton who is 116-of-167 passing for 1,740 yards and 24 touchdowns and has 116 carries for 658 yards and 15 touchdowns. Senior Maleek Chandel has 26 receptions for 401 yards and seven touchdowns. Bell threatens from the backfield with 160 carries for 1,366 yards and 15 touchdowns. In the playoffs, Pierce County beat Burke County, Central-Macon and Carver-Atlanta before stunning Crisp County.

DECEMBER 28-30, 2020

OCONEE COUNTY VS. PIERCE COUNTY CLASS 3A SKINNY Oconee County has reached the finals for the second straight season and after losing to Blessed Trinity in the 4A state championship game 17-14 last season, the Warriors are hungry. Oconee County won the Class 3A title in 1999, the state’s second-highest class at the time. Travis Noland has led Oconee County since 2014 and had not been past the second round before last year’s run to the championship game. Pierce County, searching for the program’s first title, is equally as hungry. The Bears have never been to the title game and its semifinal exit in 2018 under head coach Jason Strickland marked the program’s deepest run into the playoffs until this season. Ryan Herring has led Pierce County for two seasons and has amassed a 23-2 record in Blackshear.

DECEMBER 28-30, 2020

CALLAWAY VS. FITZGERALD Callaway is in the finals for the first time in school history. Fitzgerald is trying for its first state title since 1948 and sixth overall championship. Coach Pete Wiggins has led Callaway since 2008 but had never advanced past the semifinals in four previous tries – 2013, 2016, 2018 and last season. Fitzgerald's 1948 title came under head coach Earl Whelby, his one season coaching at Fitzgerald. The Purple Hurricane advanced to the state championship game but lost out in 1964, 1969, 2000, 2015 and 2016. Callaway stunned Rabun County 41-17 in the semifinals and ended Rabun’s hopes of a first-ever title. Fitzgerald had little trouble with Jefferson County in the semifinals, winning 24-0 which ended Jefferson County’s hope for the first title appearance in school history.

PRINCE AVENUE VS. TRINITY CHRISTIAN CLASS 1A-PRIVATE SKINNY For the first time since Mount Paran claimed the A Private championship in 2014, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy will not be the state champion in this classification. When Prince Avenue Christian defeated ELCA 38-0 in the quarterfinals, it ended a streak of five consecutive state championships for the Chargers and opened the classification to a new title holder. Neither program has won a state championship, but they have not had too much time to do so. Trinity Christian, which joined the GHSA in 2018, opened in 2011 and lost in the GISA 3A state title game in 2017, head coach Kenny Dallas’ first season at Trinity. Prince Avenue Christian opened in 2005 and lost in the title game in 2012 under head coach Mark Farriba. From 2015 to 2018, PACS lost in the semifinals each season. Head coach Greg Vandagriff took over PACS in 2016 and has lost in the semifinals three times and the second round once, last season.

HILLGROVE HAWKS

(Powder Springs, GA) • Crimson, Silver # 1

Class 6A-7A Flag Football Hillgrove vs. West Forsyth Monday, December 28 | 1:30 PM By Craig Sager II

N

HILLGROVE HAWKS

o. 4 seed Hillgrove advanced to the championship with a 12-0 win over top seed Allatoona on Wednesday. The Hawks took a 6-0 lead at the half before closing out the team’s thirdstraight shutout. Allatoona had outscored its playoff competition 55-0 heading into the game, including a 7-0 win over Lambert in the quarterfinals and a 20-0 win over Meadowcreek in the Sweet 16. Hillgrove opened its playoffs with a narrow 7-6 victory over No. 1 seed Brookwood. The Hawks followed it with a 21-0 road win over Westlake and then defeated Area 5 champion Forsyth Central 6-0 in the quarterfinals. As a result, Hillgrove has already posted victories over three different region champions over the course of its playoff run (Allatoona, Brookwood, Forsyth Central)

N

WEST FORSYTH WOLVERINES

o. 2 seed West Forsyth topped Area 5 rival South Forsyth 13-7 on Wednesday to advance to the 2020 state finals at Center Parc Stadium. Area 5 Player of the Year Haylee Dornan threw both touchdown passes to Caroline Coggin. Dorman and Coggin linked up for eight completions in the victory—including a 45-yard reception that set up the first score of the game. The Wolverines have showcased the most effective scoring attack in the Class 6A-7A playoff field this postseason. This run includes a 27-13 win over North Gwinnett in the opening round and a 27-6 win over Grayson that preceded the team’s explosive 35-0 win over McEachern in the quarterfinals. The win over McEachern was especially impressive as the Wolverines finished the contest with six total interceptions.

CALVARY DAY CAVALIERS (Savannah, GA) • Purple, Gold

Class 1A-5A Flag Football Calvary Day vs. Portal Monday, December 28 | 12:00 PM By Seth Ellerbee

C

CALVARY DAY CAVALIERS

alvary Day is riding a wave of momentum into the inaugural 5A-A flag football state championship after it outlasted Northside-Columbus 14-12 with a game-winning touchdown in the final minutes. Calvary Day’s path to the state title game went through Stockbridge 19-6 in the first round. The Cavaliers defeated Carver-Columbus 9-0 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Calvary Day advanced with a 6-0 victory over Harris County to earn the semifinal berth against Northside-Columbus. Sophomore quarterback Hannah Cail leads the Cavalier offense. “It’s hard to compare flag football with basketball, but this game meant everything to us,” senior running back and defensive back Navaeh Hamilton told Dennis Knight of the Savannah Morning News. “It had that atmosphere of a big game, and we had the energy and adrenaline flowing. We were chasing after that win and we got it. We have a great bond as a team, and now we want to win a championship.”

P

PORTAL PANTHERS

ortal – one of the smallest public schools in the state -- received the benefit of two COVID forfeits – one in the first round against Dutchtown and the Panthers made their way to the semifinals by default after Columbus forfeited its quarterfinal matchup due to COVID. In the second round, Portal defeated Mary Persons 12-6 to advance to the quarterfinals and after its 12-6 victory over Greenbrier at the Home Depot Backyard at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Panthers earned a spot in the finals. Portal has around 120 girls at the school while some programs may have nearly 1,200 but that has not stopped the small program from Bulloch County from making it to the main stage. “We’ve got a good group of girls, a good group of athletes. You know, they’re going to put seven on the field and we’re going to put seven on the field,” Coach Jay Reddick told WTOC. Sophomore quarterback Emma Yates leads the Panther offense.
