GIRLS

BY SETH ELLERBEE

Championship prowess and a possibility for a repeat of last season’s state championship game highlight the girls side of the 5A semis. Last season, Woodward beat Forest Park 62-59 to win the program’s first state championship since 1999 and fourth overall title after winning in 1999, 1996 and 1995. The War Eagles are full steam ahead after beating Coffee 77-35, Calhoun 79-46 and Jackson-Atlanta 84-59. Senior Sydney Bowles is scoring 21 points per game with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Standing in Woodward’s way is Warner Robins, a program who hasn’t won a state championship since 1965. The Demons beat Tri-Cities 7744, St. Pius X 63-48 and Greenbrier 63-56 on the way to the semifinals. State-runner up Forest Park has two players scoring in double-figures and sophomore Yasmine Allen leads with 20 points and three rebounds per game. Junior Jayda Brown is scoring 15 points with 6.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game. Forest Park won the 2020 5A title, its second since winning the 1970 Class 3A title, the state’s highest class at the time. New Manchester senior Kharyssa Richardson leads the Jaguars with 19 points, 9.2 rebounds and two blocks per game. Entering the tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 6, New Manchester beat Walnut Grove 48-39, Northside-Columbus 38-36 and Hiram 41-33 on the way to the semis. Recent playoff prowess and state championship greatness highlights the 5A semifinals with defending and 2013 champion Eagle’s Landing, 2014 and 2015 champion Jonesboro and 2019 champion Tri-Cities each competing for another title. Calhoun is the lone program without a championship and is enjoying one of the best runs in recent program history. Eagle’s Landing moved past McIntosh 33-25, Walnut Grove 62-52 and Hiram 70-54 on the way to the semifinal berth against Jonesboro. The Cardinals beat Wayne County 80-60, St. Pius X 65-64 and Loganville 67-61 to get to the semis. Jonesboro junior Devon Rainey is scoring 17.4 points with five rebounds and three assists per game. Senior Kaymen Brown adds 16.6 points and five rebounds per game with two assists. On the other side of the bracket, Tri-Cities wants another title. Its 2019 championship will be remembered for De’Marcus Johnson’s game-winning 3-point shot as time expired, but this year’s team wants to cement its own memory in program history. It’s opponent is Calhoun, a team which wants to join the long list of winning state championship teams from northwest Georgia. The Yellow Jackets are led in scoring by junior Dylan Faulkner (21 points) and senior Peyton Law (19 points).

Berkmar is the only former state champion left on the boys side of the state’s highest class with three other programs, each hungry for first-ever titles. The Patriots won back-to-back championships in 2000 and 2001 and after losing in last season’s championship game, Berkmar wants its first title in 21 seasons. The Patriots defeated Etowah 61-39, Hillgrove 71-53 and Grayson 62-57 on the way to the semifinals. Facing Berkmar is Pebblebrook – which lost to eventual-champion Milton in the quarterfinals last season. The Falcons are riding momentum from the 58-55 victory over Milton in the quarterfinals this year. The Falcons defeated Parkview 86-82 and Collins Hill 72-37 in the first two rounds. On the other side of the bracket, Newton, just one season removed from losing to Pebblebrook in the second round, stands one win away from a title berth. The Rams entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 4 and beat McEachern 62-57, West Forsyth 80-59 and Archer 57-49 to earn the semifinal berth. Norcross also entered the tournament as a two-seed (Region 7) and beat Cherokee 73-46, Lowndes 43-35 and North Gwinnett 58-55 on the way to the semis.

Host Kell defeated Rome 67-55 in the quarterfinals and got 20 points from Crystal Henderson to go with four assists and three rebounds. Also for Kell, Amaya Moss scored 19 points with 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists; Jada Peterson scored 13 points; and Jada Green scored 10 points with 15 rebounds and two steals. The Longhorns’ opponent Sequoyah is fresh off a 53-44 win over Bradwell Institute this Wednesday. The Lady Chiefs led 30-17 at halftime and weathered a comeback that brought the score as close as 41-37 in the fourth quarter. Elle Blatchford led Sequoyah with 26 points. Rockdale County has taken out Valdosta (5856) in overtime, Carrollton 59-55 and Brunswick 64-56 to reach the semifinals—where they will put Lovejoy’s 17-game win-streak and championship aspirations to the test. In Rockdale’s 64-56 win over Brunswick in the quarterfinals, Danielle Carnegie led all scorers with 35 points and Lia Edwards contributed 18 points. Lovejoy’s Bryanna Preston scored 26 points to go with seven assists and four steals for No. 2 Lovejoy as it defeated No. 1 River Ridge and snapped the Knights’ 21-game win-streak. La’Nya Foster scored 16 points and had seven rebounds as well. Grovetown made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Columbia County high school to ever reach the semifinals, and the Warriors accomplished that feat with an 82-76 overtime win against two-time defending state champion Wheeler. Grovetown’s victory extended its win-streak to 16-straight and the team rallied back from a 13-point third quarter deficit. The Warriors will take on No. 3 seed Hughes in the semifinals. The Panthers are fresh off a 53-51 quarterfinal win over River Ridge. Randy Latham knocked down a pair of late free throws to give Hughes the final margin; Hughes has also won close games over Effingham County (51-44) and Osborne (57-53) this postseason. Buford took down Carrollton 62-54 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. London Williams and Alahn Sumler led the Wolves with 16 points apiece and Jaylon Taylor finished with 11. Now, the Wolves will play a Sequoyah team that is bursting with potential. The Chiefs started their playoff run with a 135-112 win over Paulding County and then defeated Rockdale County 84-75 in the second round. On Wednesday, Kyle Keener made both free throws in a one-and-one with 8.9 seconds remaining to give host Sequoyah a thrilling 71-70 win over Kell. Preston Parker led the Chiefs with 28 points, Dylan Wolle scored 20 points and Keener finished with 14 points.

CLASS 4A GIRLS

It’s an interesting note that three of this year’s 7A semifinalists lost in the second round last season and one – Harrison – fell to Campbell in the first round. Campbell then lost to Brookwood in the second round, Norcross to Cherokee and Archer to Woodstock. Of the four programs remaining, Norcross is the only team which has won a state title and the Blue Devils have three – 2010, 2011 and 2013. On the way to the semifinals, Norcross moved through Roswell 54-45, Tift County 60-57 and Brookwood 77-60 to earn the semifinal berth. Campbell is standing in its way and a championship berth. The Lady Spartans are led by senior Nia Bozeman (12 points per game), senior Laila Battle (11 points) and senior Sarah Taub (10 points). Campbell beat Parkview 44-24, West Forsyth 56-42 and Cherokee 64-52 on the way to the semis. On the other side of the bracket, Harrison will play Archer after beating Colquitt County 63-34, Woodstock 55-48 and Grayson 57-49. Archer – the Region 7 No. 2 seed – moved past Etowah 64-48, Lowndes 48-43 and Pebblebrook 74-43 to earn its semi berth. Junior Taniyah McGowan leads the Tigers with 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and 2.5 assists per game.

Top-seeded Marist held its opponent to fewer than 20 points for the second-straight round and seventh time this season and extended its win-streak to 14 games with Tuesday’s 36-16 win over Heritage-Catoosa. Avery Fantucci led the War Eagles offensively with 21 points and teammate Lauren Kim finished with eight points. Marist will take on Pickens in the semifinals and the Dragons just completed their second-straight big fourth quarter comeback against Jefferson (51-50). Pickens trailed 47-35 with 6:54 left and sparked a 16-3 scoring run to stun top-seeded Jefferson. Pickens previously trailed Dougherty 38-24 in the fourth quarter before scoring the 48-44 victory in the second round. Luella and Baldwin will face off in a rematch of Luella’s 55-54 win on Nov. 16. Baldwin has gone 26-1 ever since. Luella on the other hand remains undefeated within Class 4A and is coming off a 78-61 victory over Carver-Columbus. When the team’s last met, Baldwin freshman Janaye Walker (19) and Luella junior Arianna Dyson (17) both had big nights and both teams finished 11-of-21 at the foul line. Walker’s postseason varsity debut began with a 19-point outing against Stephenson that included 9-of-11 shooting and a team-high 12 rebounds. Baldwin freshman Kassidy Neal also notched a double-double in her playoff debut with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Spencer enters the semifinals with a 28-2 overall record and has not lost a single game within Class 4A this season. The Greenwave’s only two losses came to East Coweta and Dutchtown in November and they have dominated the first three rounds of the postseason with sizable victories over Spalding (81-42), North Oconee (62-35) and Dougherty (56-34). Spencer will take on a Marist team that scored a 56-47 win over Monroe in the quarterfinals. The War Eagles led 42-32 heading into the fourth quarter and got a team-high 16 points from Quinn Damm. Top seeds Westover and Jefferson both entered their quarterfinal matchup battle tested, but Westover was able to dominate early and cruise to victory. The Patriots jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the first quarter and they went into the half with a 37-19 lead. Jefferson outscored Westover 36-26 in the second half, but were unable to close the gap. Effrin Smith led the Patriots with 15 points, Keshay Walton finished with 14 and nine different players scored in the win. The Patriots will take on No. 1 ranked McDonough—who is back in the semifinals for the second-straight season after a 53-48 road win over top-seeded and No. 8 ranked Druid Hills. Keenan Gray (15), Avante Nichols (13) and Amon McDowell (12) finished in double-figures.

GHSA 2022 BASKETBALL SEMIFINALS

Greater Atlanta Christian has nine state titles and joins the semifinals with three teams who are each hungry for their respective program’s first-ever state championship. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, they’d say. GACS won state titles as recently as 2020 and as far back as 1972 with back-to-back titles in 1974-75, 1982-83 and 2001-02. The Spartans beat White County 61-42, Johnson-Savannah 67-44 and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 67-60 to earn the semi berth. Seniors Kaleigh Addie (23.3 points, five rebounds) and Jaci Bolden (16 points, 4.2 rebounds) lead GACS. Its opponent is Pierce County after beating Savannah 57-23, East Forsyth 68-51 and Central-Macon 56-34. Across the bracket, top-ranked Lumpkin County will face Westminster after beating Redan 84-51, Tattnall County 90-30 and defending-champion Cross Creek 49-39. Against Cross Creek, Averie Jones scored 26 points to lead the Indians. However, when Jones is stymied, Lumpkin features Mary Mullinax, Lexi Pierce and Kate Jackson who are at the ready. Against Tattnall County, Mullinax scored 31 points and Pierce tallied 24. Westminster is in the semis after beating Dawson County 52-31, Liberty County 72-33 and Sumter County 49-36. Junior Courtney Ogden leads scoring with 18 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals per game. Sophomore Stella Chartrand adds 14.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. One side of the 3A boys bracket features two programs looking for their second overall title – including a title defense from Cross Creek -- and one game is a meeting between two teams laser focused on the team’s first title. The defending champion Razorbacks earned the semi berth with victories over Upson-Lee 75-45, LaFayette 50-47 and Groves 55-46. The Razorbacks are led by senior Jaquez Ellison (12.3 points), Jayden Pack (12 points) and Antoine Lorick (12 points). Ellison adds 7.6 rebounds per game, Pack added 2.8 assists per game and Lorick grabs eight rebounds per game. Beach – a team which hasn’t won a state championship since 1967 – stands in the way of the defending champions. The Bulldogs are led by sophomore Larry Johnson who is scoring 16.3 points with 6.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Junior Shamarrie Hugie adds 16 points with 7.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.8 steals per game. The Bulldogs entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed from Region 3 and beat Long County 64-58, White County 57-52 and Burke County 56-52 to earn the semifinal berth. Across the bracket, Windsor Forest is led by D’Ante Bass, who is scoring 14 points with 6.4 rebounds per game. The Knights beat Pierce County 69-39, Sandy Creek 47-37 and Sumter County 47-41 to earn the berth. Thomson beat Crisp County 75-51, Hart County 69-44 and Johnson-Savannah 79-66 to earn the semis berth.

Defending state champion Josey eliminated Fannin County 61-53 in a rematch of last year’s Class 2A championship game and held off the Rebels’ late fourth quarter rally. Josey’s Aqoyas Cody responded with a basket and two clutch free-throws to give Josey a 58-53 edge with 19.4 left and the Eagles closed out the win. Josey’s next opponent, Elbert County, is coming off a 30-point win over Callaway (73-43). The Blue Devils jumped out to a 40-25 halftime lead and then poured on a 19-4 edge in the third quarter to grow the lead to 59-29. Northeast-Macon made another statement Wednesday night in its 85-52 victory over Laney and will head into this weekend’s semifinal showdown with Rabun County with a 35.7 average margin of victory through the first three rounds. The Raiders were tied 15-15 after the first quarter and led 33-31 at the half before exploding for a 52-21 scoring advantage in the second half—including a 26-6 third quarter swing. Similarly to Northeast-Macon, Rabun County is coming off a massive 73-39 quarterfinal win over Chattooga. Seniors Sophie Woodard (25), Gracie Deetz (22) and Carley Haban (10) all finished with double-figure points. No. 2 seed Northeast became the first Class 2A boys team to advance to the semifinals following a stunning road win over top-seeded Vidalia on Tuesday. The Indians entered the game riding a 25-game win-streak, but Northeast was able to jump out to a 40-17 halftime lead. Vidalia outscored the Raiders 36-17 in the second half, but were unable to overcome Northeast’s overwhelming first half margin. Seniors Milandre Pettigrew (17), Travion Solomon (16) and Zion Odoms (16) and each finished in double-figures and Solomon also dished out seven of the team’s 18 assists. Northeast will take on Westside-Augusta—which is coming off a 77-36 blowout over Early County in the quarterfinals. The other semifinal battle will pin Butler and Woodville Tompkins. Butler is fresh off a 51-41 win over Washington County that included a 28-10 scoring advantage in the final quarter. Senior Kendrell Glanton netted a season-high 26 points in the Bulldogs’ 6056 second-round win over Pace Academy. Model held a 39-27 lead with 3:05 left in the third quarter, but Woodville-Tompkins orchestrated a 20-8 scoring run that forced overtime at 47-47. Woodville-Tompkins built a 54-51 lead in overtime and Model’s final shot missed at the buzzer. Lukas Platauna (22) and Zion Powers (12) led Woodville-Tompkins in scoring.

After trailing Pelham 23-17 at the half, Commerce was able to punch its ticket to the semifinals with a 3734 overtime victory to keep the Tigers’ hopes of claiming the school’s first-ever girls basketball state title alive. Commerce is averaging just over 44 points per game through the playoffs, and defensively have shown they can bring an opponent’s offense to a halt. The Tigers held Clinch County to just five points in the third quarter of their second-round matchup, setting them up for the miraculous comeback against Pelham in the quarterfinals. The only thing standing in the way of a Commerce finals appearance is Hancock Central, and the Lady Bulldogs are rolling into the semifinals on a 15-game winning streak and have not dropped a loss since December. Hancock Central will also be looking for its first ever girls basketball state title, and have yet to score less than 56 points against a playoff opponent. Taylor County is the most decorated program in the semifinals with 11 state titles and is looking to add its first state title since 2015. The high-powered Vikings offense will be matched up against a Lake Oconee Academy team that has just one loss on the season and is hungry for the programs first ever girls basketball state title. After being eliminated in the first round last season with a loss to eventual state champs Towns County, the Manchester Blue Devils denied the defending state champs a chance at a repeat title with a 64-45 victory in the quarterfinals, putting Manchester one step closer to its second-ever state title and first since 2007. The Blue Devils have just two losses on the season and are riding an 11-game win streak into the semifinals where they’ll be matched up against Warren County. The Screaming Devils escaped the quarterfinals with a narrow 61-60 victory over Dublin and are in pursuit of their first-ever state title while riding a 15-game win streak. On the other side of the bracket, Drew Charter and Social Circle will both be vying for a chance to claim each program’s first-ever state title. Drew Charter has just one loss on the season, a 72-61 loss to Grayson back in November, but its past two postseason victories have been decided by four points or fewer and Social Circle heads into the semifinals as one of the top-scoring offenses in the classification. The Redskins scored more than 100 points in their first-round matchup against Atlanta Classical (114-36) and against Clinch County (107-25) in the second round, and are led by seniors KJ Reid, Cam Gaither and Amarion Russell.

The defending state champion Hebron Christian Lions are returning to the semifinals after a narrow 53-51 win over St. Francis in the quarterfinals. With just six seconds left in the game, sophomore Amiya Porter drained the game-winning free throws to secure the Lions quarterfinals victory and keep their season alive. The Lions will be matched up against a familiar semifinals opponent in Galloway, who they sent home last year in pursuit of their state title with a 68-54 victory in the semifinals. This year, Galloway returns with a team that managed to upset Region 1 top-seeded Stratford Academy 48-35 in the second round and upset Region 8 top-seeded Tallulah Falls 55-43 in the quarterfinals as the Scots aim to secure their first-ever girls basketball state title. Holy Innocents’ was denied the chance for a three-peat last season after falling to St. Francis in the semifinals, but are now just two wins away from the program’s fifth state title. The Golden Bears have just two losses on the season, and their offense has been firing on all cylinders through the playoffs, averaging 78 points per contest. Standing in their way are the Mt. Paran Christian Eagles, who are in search of the programs first-ever girls basketball state title. Greenforest continued its stellar run through the postseason with a commanding 61-43 victory over Galloway in the quarterfinals to earn the semifinals berth. The Eagles were led by senior Jalen Forrest who scored 21 points, while Florian Tenebay pitched in 16 points. The high-scoring duo will have their hands full against Heritage-Newnan, who earned the trip to the semifinals after a narrow 52-51 win over North Cobb Christian as the Hawks search for their first-ever state title continues. Down 33-23 at the half, Heritage was able to mount a comeback, and claimed the quarterfinals victory when sophomore Max Skidmore sank the go-ahead free throw with 9.6 seconds left before senior Shaun Nichols blocked North Cobb Christian’s final shot. On the other side of the bracket, King’s Ridge and First Presbyterian are both just a win away for a chance to claim each programs first-ever state title. King’s Ridge earned its semifinals appearance following a sound 62-47 victory over Calvary Day in the quarterfinals, fueled by Isaac Martin (15 points), Liam Thomas (13 points) and Micah Hoover (12 points). First Presbyterian is coming off its largest win of the postseason, a 64-53 win over St. Francis fueled by strong outings from Jakhari Williams (18 points, seven rebounds) and Julius King Jr. (13 points, seven rebounds).
