AtitsmeetingonFriday14November,the BoardoftheLAAconducted its annual electionofofficers.

RogerHopkinson,Chairmansince2005 andadirectorsince2004,hadpreviously announcedthathewouldstanddown fromtheBoardduring2015anddidnotto seekre-electionasChairman.TheBoard reflectedonthesignificantchangesithad seenunderhisleadership;thePopularFlying Associationbecomingamodernandeffective organisationunderitsnewbannerofthe LightAircraftAssociationandemergingasa significantforceforsportsandrecreational aviationintheUK.

TheBoardthankedRogerforhismany achievementsandaskedhimtoaccept theposifionofVice-Presidentofthe Association,providingaplatformto continuehisexternalworkandtoenablethe Associafiontocontinuetobenefitfromhis expertiseandenergy.

STOWMARIESWINSGRANT

Europe'slargestsurvivingWorldWarI Aerodrome,StowMariesnearMa!donin Essex,issettobenefitfroma2200,000grant towardsrestoringandrepairingfourofits historicbuildings.

Thegrant,awardedbynot-for-profit businessWREN,ispartofanationalHeritage Fundthatsupportstherepair,maintenanceor restorafionofabuildingorstructureofhistoric orarchitecturalimportance.

StowMattesAerodromewasbuiltin1916 asabasefortheRoyalFlyingCorpsandwas instrumentalindefendingLondonfromthe threatofGermanZeppelinairshipsandGotha bombers.In1919itceasedtobeusedbythe

Rogerwaspleasedtoagreeandwasduly electedVice-President.

TheBoardthenelectedBrianDavies tobeitschairmanforthecomingyear. Brian'scareerinaviationbeganwithan apprenticeshipwithBEAandsawhimrise tobecometheChiefEngineerofAircraft MaintenanceatBA.HewasthenDirectorof EngineeringwithBritishCaledonianAirways andOperationsDirectorofAirEuropebefore becomingCEOofKenyaAirways,which hemovedfromastate-ownedcompanyto publiclisting.Nowretiredhewastheexternal examineratCityUniversityLondonforits MastersdegreecoursesinAirTransport Management,AirSafetyManagementand AircraftMaintenanceManagementforthelast fiveyears.HebuiltandfliesaEuropaandhas beenadirectoroftheLAAsince2012.

TheBoardalsoelectedJamesTannockand JohnBradytobevice-chairmen,andJames Tannocktobecompanysecretary,

militaryandforthenextalmost100yearsthe sitereturnedtoagriculturaluse.

Afewyearsagotheaerodromeand tumbledownbuildingsweresavedfrom redevelopmentbylocalpeopleand StowMadesGreatWarAerodromeLtd,a charitabletrust,wassetuptoraisefundsto buythesite,restoreitandopenituptothe public.WREN'sgrant—oneofthelargest everawardedfromtheHeritageFund-will focusonthepriorityrestorationandrepair offourofthekeybuildings,namelythe RoyalEngineers'Workshop,theNightFlying Store,thePilots'ReadyRoomandtheMotor Transportworkshop.

InthesummaryoftheGeneralAviation AwarenessCouncil'sNovember Airfield's PlanningReport, ChairmanSteveSlater commentsthatthetrendofairfieldpressures, bothfromeconomicandhousingthreatsand inappropriatedevelopmentssuchaswind turbinesinlheimmediatevicinityofflying sites,sadlycontinuesAshasbeenreported inthepast,thisisledbygovernmentpolicy inprioritisinglandforhousingaheadofother areasofinfrastructure,includingtransportation. whichhasinturnledtodevelopersanempting to'cashin'onthelandresources.

UnfortunatelytheRedTapeChallengeteam hasnottackledtheairfieldplanningissueand achangeofgovernmentpolicyisrequired. Airfieldslistedasbeingundervariousstages ofthreatincludethealreadyclosed Panshanger.ManstonandBlackpool,plus WellesbourneandWycombeAirPark. Betternewssuggeststheinitiativetoutilise SportEngland'sSignificantAreasforSport (SASP)policy,whichgivesadditional planningprotection,basedonsportflying andcompetitionacrobaticactivities,is makinggoodprogresswithover20sitesnow registeringinterest Onlybysupportingthevariousinitiatives organisationssuchasGAACpromotewillwe haveanyimpactonthecontinuingthreatto airfields,weurgeourmemberstoreadthis report,whichisavailableintheNEWSsection oftheLAAwebsite voivwLAA.uk.com arid committohelpifatallpossible.

PROTOTYPEFLIGHTTESTCONSULTATION

TheCAAhaslaunchedaconsultationaimed atreducingtheredtapeandfinancialburdens associatedwithsecuringairworthinessand operationalapprovalfornewlightaircraftdesigns. TheAuthoritysaysitsproposedchangesto theexistingrulesarepartofitsresponsetothe Government'sRedTapeChallenge.andconsequent commitmenttodeliverarisk-basedandproportionate approachtooverseeingGeneralAviation.

UndertheGAAsproposals.aircraftdesigners willbeabletotryoutanewconcept(uptoa maximumtake-offweightof2.000kg)intheair withoutgoingthroughthecostlyandtimeconsuming proceduresthatcurrentlyexisttogetanewdesign pasttheinitialprototypestage.If.aftertryingouta promisingidea,itisthoughttobeviable.thenafull designapprovalprogrammecanbeplannedand fundedintheusualway.

Therelaxationoftherulesonlightaircraft development,whichisbeingsupportedbythecore GeneralAviationmemberassociations,couldalso benefittheevolutionofmoreenvironmentallyfriendly aerospacetechnologies,andofferaneasierrouteinto theaerospacesectorforyoungskilledengineers.The mainobjective,however,istoreversethedeclinein

FORALLSORTSofreasonsIhadbeenwaitingforaboutmonthtofly thefirstpost-restorationflightandnow,atlast,ithasfinallyhappened.At 14.25onSunday9November.X-ray-Charlieliftedofffromtherunwayat Henstridge.Nomajorsnags,justsomeminorriggingadjustmentsneeded (asexpected)andseveralexpensivelyoverhauledinstrumentsnot behavingastheyshouldhave,butasuccessfulfirstpost-restorationflight nonetheless.Thewholefamilywasthere:Sheila(we'regettingmarried inJanuary);daughterKaty;son-in-lawSimon(aneasyJetCaptain); grandkidsBenandElla(whomayonedayinherittheaeroplane);plus MilesMcCallum,whorestoredit.

Miles,whorunsStraight&LevelAircraftEngineeringLtd,hasdonean incrediblygoodandhorrendouslyexpensive(!)restorationonG-AJXC. Externallyshehasbeenrestoredto1944condition(whenshefirstflew):

internally,therehavebeencompromisestomakeheruseableasa familyaeroplane,butretainingcharacterwithtraditionalstyleanalogue instrumentsetc.Although'owned'andmaintainedbytheRAF.army Austerswereflownbyarmypilotsandwereusedmostlyforspottingfor artillerybatteriesandcommunicationswork.TJ343,asshewasthen, wasissuedto665(RCAF)SquadroninFebruary1945andwenttothe NetherlandstofollowtheadvancethroughEurope.InJuly1945,665Sqn wasdisbandedandtheaeroplanepassedto652Squadronbutremained inEurope,followingthetroopstoGermanyuntillate1946.Shewas soldandstruckoffchargeinMay1947,afteronly29months'service.In privatehands,shehashadnumberofowners,mostnotablyDevonair, whooperatedaservicefromChivenortoLundyIslandforseveralyears intheearly1950s.

PETERWASRECENTLYintouchwith ProjectNewsregardinghisWittmanTailwind projectandhisaccompanyingblog (vvww.tailwindbuild.blogspotco.uk). His project,whichstartedinMarch2008,is progressingwellandhisblogrecordsingreat detaileachstageofthebuild.Thisisthe secondaircraftPeterhasbuilt,thefirstbeing Van'sRV-9AG-OPVM.TheTailwindproject isacompletelydifferentchallenge,ofcourse, beingbuiltfromplansratherthanakitand withafuselageandtailfromtubularsteel, andawoodenwing.Mostofthematerials havebeenpurchasedfromAircraftSpruce (wwwaircraftsprucacorn) whoarealsonow custodiansoftheTailwinddesign.

23rdOctober2014—Firstenginerun Itwastimetotryandstarttheengine.First jobwastosecuretheaircrafttoensureit couldn'trunaway.Todothisitwaschocked butalsochainedtothebackofmycar!Whilsttheenginewasrunning, myneighbour,Daryl,keptwatchtoensurethatnoonecameclosetothe propeller.Theelevatortrimwasmovedtoholdfullupelevatortoensure thetailwouldn'tfift.

I'vefittedaconventionalprimerpumptotheengine,whichfeedsall fourcylinders;fourstrokeswereused.Thenwiththemasteronandthe leftimpulse-coupledmagnetoon,thestarterbuttonwaspushed.Afew coughsandspluttersensuedbuttheenginedidn'twanttorun.Then Darylsawsomeliquidundertheaircraft.Thisprovedtobewaterand furtherinspectionfoundthattheairboxwasfullofit.Obviouslytherecent rainhadsomehowendedupintheairboxandthepoorenginewastrying tostartonafuel/air/watermixture.Theairboxshouldhavehadasmall holeinitslowestpoint-ithasnow!Tosolvetheproblemtemporarilythe airboxwasdisconnectedandlefthangingdownbelowthecarburettor. Thesparkpiugswereremovedanddried.Theenginewasturnedoveron

thestarterwithouttheplugsintoensure therewasnowaterinthecylinders,andthe plugsrefitted.

Finallyitwastimetotryagainandthis timetheenginestartedperfectly.Itranfora fewsecondsontheprimerbeforestopping butafterre-priming,theenginestartedand withtherightmagnetoalsoon,begantorun smoothly.

Ithentooktheopportunitytocarryout somepreliminarychecks.Thecylinderhead temperaturewasregisteringoffthescalebut theexhaustgastemperaturegaugewasnot moving—itlookedlikethethermocoupleswere wiredthewrongwayround.Thebusvoltage lookedgoodbuttheammeterwasshowing alargedischarge—Ihada50:50chanceof gettingtheCurrentsensorroundthecorrect wayandhadguessedwrong.Theoilpressure wasgoodbuttheoiltemperatureseemed pegged.Eitherthevernathermhadn'topened orthereisafaultinthetemperaturegaugeor sender—anotherthingtocheck.Thefuelgaugehadstoppedworking —presumablyabadconnectionsomewhere.Thevacuumgaugewas readingabitlowbutthegyrosweredefinitelyspinningup.

Withthesebasiccheckscompletedtheenginewasstoppedandan externalinspectioncarriedout.Nooilleaks,nothingcomingloose, highcylinderheadtemperatureconfirmedasawiringerror,good compressionsoncyfinders1,2,and3butnoton4,andcrankcasestill coolsooiltemperaturenotyetconfirmedasanissue.

Giventhattherewasnothinguntoward,theenginewasrestartedand ranagainfortenminutes.Thistimetheenginewasrunupto2,000rpm toallowforpropermagnetochecks,whichwerewellwithinlimits.Avery quickburstatfullpowersawastaticrpmof2,250.Timetostopannoying theneighboursandpackupfortheday.

CESSNA120G-AJJSreceivedherPermittoFlyrenewalonFriday17 Octoberafteraprotractedrestorationfollowingdamageduringaforced landingatBicesteron9May2010.Ashernewowner,Iwatchedthe rebuildoverthepast12monthswithgrowingexcitement,havingsold myprevious120inAprilinanticipationof'JS'sarrival.Unfortunatelythe prolongedrebuildtooktheentiresummertocomplete,robbingmeofany flyinginwhatwas,formany,thebestflyingsummerforyears.However, Iwasverypleasedtofinallytakedeliveryofherandflyhertohernew homeatSturgate,inLincolnshire.

ThereturnofthisvintageCessnatoflyingconditiongivesthe opportunitytoreviewherinterestingpast,muchofwhichwasconducted intheCaribbean.Firstflownon17March1947,shewasissuedwiththe registrafionNC2786Nanddeliveredon4August1947toMrLEStucky ofMoundridge,Kansas,proprietoroftheSunflowerOilCo.Shewas soldoninMay1949toMiltonHEwy,alsoofMoundridge,Kansasbut lessthantwoyearslaterwassoldyetagain,leavingtheUnitedStatesto beginanewlifeinthesunnyCaribbean.

InFebruary1951,shewasflownsouthtoVenezuela.becoming thepersonalmountofMr0LCrump,owneroftheCreolePetroleum

CorporationofCarpito,Venezuela.Thecompany.formedin1920,was American-ownedandsetuptoexploreandestablishoilfieldsonLake Maracaibo.Venezuela.ItbecamepartofStandardOilin1928andwas, until1951,theworld'snumberoneoilproducer.

On2January1953shereturnedtotheUSregisterasN1106M,in preparationforamovetotheBritishWestIndies,havingbeenacquired bythefamousLightAeroplaneClubofTrinidadandTobago.Therethe aircraftwasoperatedfromPiarcoairport,nearthecityofPortofSpain, whereshewasusedforflightinstructionandlocalhire.ThelittleCessna obviouslylikedlifeinthetropicsasitremainedwiththeClubforafurther 16yearsuntil1969,whenitwasreplacedbymoremodernequipment. ItwassoldtoaMrLiamSharkeyinGuyana,takingupthelocalmarks of8R-GBO,forusebytheGuyanaSugarCorporation.Hereitwasused asaworkingaircraftforliaisonandlocalsupportoperatingbetweenthe company'smanysugarcanefieldsthroughoutthecountry.

Onemustassumetheaircraftcametosomekindofgriefin1971.as itwaswithdrawnfromusehavingamassedagrandtotalof3,135hours 35minutesinthepreceding24years.Itwasthenplacedinlong-term storage,duringwhichtimerecordsshowithavingreceived'intermediate

repairs'intheUSA,sometimein1980.In1986thedismantled airframewasshippedtotheUK,stillintheownershipofLiam Sharkey,whereitcontinuedinstorage.

Anappropriateperiodregistration,G-AJJS,wasallocatedby theCAAon7January1987andsoonafterwardsvintageaircraft restorer,CliffLovell.wascontractedtobringtheforlornCessna backtolife.Therenovationincludedpaintstripping,inspectionand fullre-paint,allinstrumentsoverhauled,andnewwheels,tyresand brakesfitted.The0-200Aenginewaszerotimedandanewcockpit interiorinstalled,afterwhichtestflyingwasconcludedandaPermit toFlyissuedinDecember1987.

TheaircraftthensatidleinahangaratOldSarumforafurther twoyears,beforeflyingrecommencedinthespringof1990when afurther11hourswasaddedtothelogbooksoverthefollowing12 months.AnewbuyerwaseventuallyfoundintheRobhurstFlying Group,whoacquireditinJuly1992andflewittoanewhomein Woodchurch,Kent.Hereitprovidedthethreegroupmemberswith muchenjoymentandafarmoreactivetimeforthenext18years. IttravelledextensivelythroughoutsouthernEnglandaswellas frequentforaysacrosstheChannel.In1999,stillinthegroup's ownership,-..1Sunderwentfurtherrenovationofbothwingsanda re-spraypriortobeingsoldinApril2010.

Sadly,havingclockedupfewerthansixhoursundernew ownership,'JScametogriefatBicesterairfieldon9May,during aprecautionarylandingfollowingpowerlossduetoGarbicing. Duringrollout,theleftmaingearlegfellintoadeeprabbithole, whichcausedextensivedamagetotheforwardfuselage,although mercifullywithoutseriousinjurytothepilotandhispassenger. Thankfully,theengineandpropelleralsoescapedanydamage. MyownconnectionwithG-AJJShappenedfrompure coincidence.Whilstsearchingtheinternetforpossiblesources ofsparepartsformyownCessna120,G-BRPF,Isawapicture of'JS'sdismantledfuselagestoredatBruntingthorpe.Imanaged totrackdownitsownerandenquiredaboutthepartsIneeded. However,whenIvisitedthehangarthefollowingweektopickup theparts,whatconfrontedmequitestoppedmeinmytracks.'JS wasstoodproudlyonitsnewgearinthemiddleofthehangar,well onitswaytofullrestoration.

AlhoughIdidn'tneedanother120,thisonehadbeenstripped backtoitsbasiccomponents,itsunfortunateaccidentdamage expertlyrepairedandthewingswerebeingrecovered.Ithadits low-time0-200Aengine,comparedwithmyaircraft'shightime C-85,andwasfinishedoffverynicely.Ihadtohaveit!Itherefore becametheproudownerofG-AJJS,asecondCessna120!

SadlyG-BRPFhadtogo.Shehadbeenarealfriendandtreasure tomeduringthefouryearsIhadownedher.Ihadlearnedand honedmytaildraggingskillsinher,putalmost400hoursintoher logbooks,andlearnedsomuchaboutaircraftenginesandairframe careandmaintenance.Itwashardtoseehergobutsheflewoff inApril2014toagoodhomeandisnowownedbyMarkPotterin northDevon.

This,however,leftmewithaverylongsummerwithnothingto fly,astherestorationtookslightlylongerthanplanned,asmost thingsinaviationdo.Soitwas,havingshamelesslyhounded FrancisandMaxineatTurwestonontheprogressofpaperwork requirements,alltherequisitebitswereeventuallyinplaceand clearanceseemedassuredtowardsmid-October.However.Ihad anotherlongoverseastripscheduledandtheyearwasrapidly turningintowinter,withbadweatherforecast.11almostcamedown tothewireingettingherflownhomebutIbreathedahugesigh ofreliefasthePermitwasfinallyissuedatlunchtimeonFriday 17th,theonlydayavailabletogetherhometoSturgatebeforethe weatherfinallyturnedandbeforeIwasduetoleave,notreturning unfilearlyNovember.Itwasnowornever!Muchhurriedactivity ensuedthatafternoon,includingvisitingthebanktoclearthefunds andarrangingforafriendtoflymedowntoBrunfingthorpe,with astopatLeicestertogetfuel.Wouldwedoitbeforewelostthe light?Wouldtheweatherhold?Intheend,allwaswell.Sheflewso sweetlyand,havinglastpilotedmyold120inlateMarch,itsoon feltsofamiliar.Iwasonceagaininmyelement. Kevin'sdreamofTigerMothabinitiotraining startedwhenhefoundthreesuitableprojects andsetaboutdevelopingaproductionline fortheirrenovationAllweretobeinfinisned inanRAF1944[rainingschemeandtothe mostaccurateandhighestmuseumquality. Alongsidethesethreefurtherairframeshave alsobeen,withonefuselagealreadyon trestlesandanotherstraw-coveredexample iswaitinginthewings.Thishascertainly beenquiteanundertaking,withKevin workingsixdaysaweek,from06:00amuntil lunchtime,plushelivesa45minutedrive awayfromhishangars.

AsthePiperCubistorhighwing monoplanes,theTigerMothhasenteredthe Britishpsycheandvocabularyforanysmall biplaneAfriendrecentlyvisitedwithher JungmannandafterwardsIwasasked."What wasthatsmallgreyTigerMoth?'Itisnoratall anunusualcommentanditdoesunderlinethe affectionthatexistsforthatromanticbygone ageofbiplanewingsandopencockpits.

ThereusedtobeanynumberofTigersin Britainengagedinthetrainingrole,andby thatImeanpost-war.post-militaryuse,but theyarefewandfarbetweenthesedays.Itis consideredtobeademandingaircrafttofly, andIagreethatitcertainlytakesmorepiloting skillsthanlearningonatricycleundercarriage typeItis,andalwayshasbeen,averygood trainerbuttheonethingthatdefinesthe operationofaTigerMothisthat it isatailskidequippedbiplanethatisnotgenerallysuitedto thegroundtrafficenvironmentoftoday.

So,whatisitreallyliketoteachinaTiger? Whatareitspleasuresandfoiblesnowthat isislongoutofitsintendedoperational environmentoflarge,openairfieldswhere itcouldalwaystake-offandlandintowind? Confinedtotaxiwaysandrunways,isitfuntilledorfearsome?

ONTHEGROUND

Therearefewwhowoulddisagreethatthe TigerMothneedsflyingallofthetimeandthat itshandlingonthearoundissomethingof anoveltyTheconfigurationofatailskidand twomainundercarriagewheelsusedtobe consideredconventionalbutasthereisnowa talwheelrating,wecansafelyassumeitisnow definitelynotthenorm,indeedtodayitisvery unconventional.Itisanunstablearrangement wheredirectionisapttochangeunlessyou payconstantvigilance.

Thetailskidis,infact,welldesigned,and withinitslimitedparameters,verysuitable foritspurposeongrass.Themainfactors decidingifweshouldtaxiouttoflyarethe strengthanddirectionofwind,andthesurface thatyou'lltotaxioverIdeallythismeansa grassfield.whiletaxyingoverametalled surfaceinallbutverylightwindsisbest avoided.Directionalcontrolisawkwardasthe skidslipsandslidesoverconcreteandlarmac withsufficientfrictiontowearouttheshoe. butwhileremaininginsufficienttogiveany quantil'ableuseinhelpingmaintainorchange direction.Inacalmwindlessworlditwouldbe quitemanageable,butgivenacrosswindoi morethanafewknotsandthedirectional(in) stabilityiscalledintoquestion...alongwiththe pilot'sairmanship.

WhenitcomestoanewpilotI'lloftenask itheorshehaseverdoneanywhitewater canoeing.Whilethatmaysoundratherobtuse, tomaintaincontrolwhengoingdownstreamin acanoethepaddlehastobeusedtoprovide movementofthecanoethroughthewater, andultimatelytoguideandsteer.Thecanoe hastobegoingfasterthanthewateritisinto maintaincontrol.ATigerisnotdissimilarIn ordertohavecontrol,incertaincircumstances, a burstofpowerandresultingslipstream over[hetailfeatherswillhaveaneffect.Used correctlyandattherighttime

Movingstraightahead.thenosemustbefirsl swungtoonesidetocleartheareaweare abouttotaxiinto,becausethenoseofthe aircraftcompletelyblankstheforwardview. Youthenswingbackintheotherdirection tocontinueyourSturningpath.Weneed constantweavinginordertoclearthepath aheadbeforearrivingtheretobesurprised byperhaps,anotheraircraft(evenworseand moreembarrassingstill,istostrikeastatic object.onethathasalwaysbeentheresuch asawindsock,fuelhawser,controltower... hangars..andsoonSThisentireexercise isexacerbatedbythefactthatthereareno brakes,althoughwithjudicialcare.developed fromexperience,therealeffectofthesteerable skid,temperedbyknowingthelimitations, canbeusedtoverygoodeffect.Wemust usethepropwash,andholdtheslicktobest advantagewithanywind,andutilisethatwind forashortradiusturn.

COMMUNICATING

WhiletheoriginalGosporttubesarefittedin thecockpitsofallthreeschoolTigerMoths, wedon'ttendtousethem,rathertheyarethere tocompletethelook'ofthe1940'scockpits. Irememberaskingmyfather.whoflewhis gradinginTigerMoths, if youcouldactually hearordiscernanythingabovethenoise oftheengineandslipstream.Hisreplywas thatasyouwereexpectingalimitedrangeof commentsandphrases.invariablyyesyou couldNowwehaveanintercomwithapairof Lynxheadsetsunderperiodlookingleatheror cloth'helmets',Mk8gogglesonourforeheads tocompletethepracticalityandimage,and boommicswithwindsocks,whichgive surprisinglygoodclarityofspeech. Withourchosensystem,theintercom batteriesareintheheadbandandwehaveto makesuretheyarechargedforconsistently goodcommunication,particularlyimportant withsomeoftheoldergenerationstudents whocomefortriallessonsItiscertainlygood tokeepourpilotsundertraininginthepicture witharelaxedcommentaryandadvicewhen theyaregivencontrolandexperiencethe tentativepolingofaTigerMoth.As soonastheheadsetispluggedinto

thatsitatthecentreofmostincidentsand accidents.Asusual,loss-of-controlduring thetake-offandlandingphasesfeatureshigh onourscoreboardbut,whenyoulookatthe incidentsclosely,thereareoftentechnical factorsthat,whenhighlighted,mightprevent anotherincidentoraccident.SoIdon'tthink itsnecessarilyagoodideatogettoohung-up

onwhichcategoryanyparticularincident isfiledunder-weknow,fromexperience (don'twe).thatifsarareaccidentthatonly hasonecause.

Taketheexampleofarecentaccident featuringthreeaircraft,twoLAAtypesanda RMAAmicrolightThishasbeenlogged,for statisticalpurposes,asa'lossofcontrolon landing'incident.Manstechnicallanguage forscrewing-upthelanding.asweallknow. Thenaturalwaywehumanswouldthinkabout thiswouldbetoputtheincidentintothe 'pilotincompetence'bracket,inotherwords humanerror,andthinknomoreaboutit.We, ifithadbeenourincident,wouldpickupthe pieces(perhapsliterally)andmoveon.Asan investigator,atfirstsighttherewouldbelittle tolearnas'weallmakemistakes,landingan aircraftrequiresspecialskillsafterall'.

Inactualfact,Ionlyfoundoutaboutthis particularincidentbychance.Wereceived aPermitrenewalapplicationfromoneof ourmembersand,ontheapplicationform.

therepairerhadlistedthattherewassome damagetotheairframewhichhadbeen 'repairedbyreplacement'Inotherwords,the sortofminorrepairsthatanLAAinspectoris perfectlyentitledtosign-off.Wewentthrough ourusualchecks,whichasmanyofyouwill knowareprettycomprehensive,andcouldn't findanyreportofdamagetotheairframe, whichstruckmeasabitodd.

Therepairer.averyexperiencedLAA Inspector,hadn'tsuggestedthatthedamage wastooextensive,whateverhadcausedit, andIwasabouttorecommendtheissueof theCertificateofValidity.But,penpoised.I decidedtogivetheinspectoracallbefore committingmyself-asitturnedoutIwas gladthatIdid.

Iwasquitesurprisedthatthecostofthe quiteextensiverepairstotheairframe.and afullengineshockload,amountedtomany thousandsofpounds.NaturallyIaskedfor fullworksheetsand.afterstudyingthem,was happylofindthat.Indeed,therewerenoreal repairs,justcomponentreplacements.Inother words,therepairerwasintheclear,although thinkwewouldhavepreferreditifhehad spokentousbeforebeginningthejob!He thought,incidentally,thatthe'authorities'had beeninformedthatthisaircrafthadcrashed intotwoothersafteralossofcontrolonlanding andthatwewouldknowallabouttheaffair. Naturally,aswedidn't.1didabitofdigging. 11turnedoutthattheincidentwasquitea catastropheforthreeindividualaircraftowners andagoodexampleofassumingsomebody elsehastakenchargeoftheformalities surroundingsuchanevent.AsIexplained, twooftheaircraftwereoursandonewasa microlightoperatingundertheBMAAflag.Ilet theIBMAAengineeringteamknow!about'its' microlightandfocussedmyaftentiononour twomachines

Ofcourse,weknewaboutoneofthese,this wastheapplicantaircraft,andbynowhad thefullrepairworksheetsandhadassessed therepairs.Whatoftheother?Well,aftera fewphonecallswediscoveredthismachine's registration.Then,bycheckingourdatabase, wefoundthatwedidknowthattherehadbeen somedamagereportedearlierintheyear,with theaircrafthavingbeenissuedwithanewCV justamonthortwoearlier.Infact,thetailplane hadbeenreplacedandpermissionsought fromtheLAA'sDesignOfficetouseamore modern,shorterchordversionThedamage wasrecordedinthedatabaseasbeing causedbyaminorgroundincidentinvolvinga microlight.

This,whilstbeingtrue(ourmanhadfirst crashedintothemicrolightandithadbeenthis aircraftthathadcrashedintothetailplaneand. asitturnedout,theaileronsandtheflaps), itdidn'tconveythegravityofthesituation. Thereforetherehadbeennofollow-upand everythinglookedfine...onpaper.

Anyway,what'sthepointofthisstoryapart from,thatis,remindingallownersthatthey mustreportallaccidentsthatcauseinjuryor aircraftdamagetotheAAIBiftheaircraftis involvedinflightoperations(and,bytheway, thefactthatthe'wheelswereontheground' duringtheincidentdoesn'tcountasanexcuse nottodothis!)?Thepointhastobethat,inthe LAAsystem,weallneedtobeinvolvedwhen thingsgowrong.Aclear,uncomplicatedand openrelationshipbetweentheowners,theLAA inspectorsandLAAEngineeringiscriticalto ourcontinuedsuccess.

Anotherpointmaybethat.whenwelook moreclosely,weoftenseemore.WhenI eventuallygotallthefacts,Idiscoveredthat thepilotoftheincidentaircraft,averysensible chap,wentflyinginpoorlyselected.rathertoo bigfootwearwhichmeantthathisrightfoot crossedovertheleftduringthelandingandhe lostruddercontrolNow,ifthat'snottechnical content,Idon'tknowwhatis!

Youmayhavestudiedthepictureofafairly wellbashed-upMinimaxbeforereading thistext-Iwouldhavedone.Here'swhat happened.

TEAMMINIMAX91—ENGINE FAILUREONTAKE-OFF

BeforeIbeginthisexploration,mayIthank thepilot,LAA'erPaulParry,forallowingme todiscussthisincidentquiteopenlyInmy view,Paulisasuperstar:hefreelyadmitsthat thereasonhe'stheownerofaverybroken aeroplane.insteadofaniceairworthyone,is merebecauseofacoupleofpoordecisionshe maderatherthanthe'headline'cause.None ofusliketalkingaboutourmistakesandthe aviationcommunityatlargeshiesawayfrom exploringindividualpiloterroreventsforthis reason.IfyouarearegularreaderorSafety SpotyouwillknowthatI'vebeenbashing

"Suddenly,and veryquickly,the aircraftwasfacing theotherwaythentheaircrafthit theground"

theflytheAircraftFirst'(whensomething goeswrong)drumratheralotrecently;that's becauseofafewrecenteventsthatcouldhave beenavoided,oratleasttheoutcomescould havebeenalotlesstragic,ifthepilotsinvolved haddonethissimplething.

Thisparticularincident.involvingahomebuiltMinimax,hasbeenfiledasa'technical' failurebecausetheprimarycausewasthatthe enginefailedbut,asyouread.you'lldiscover thatthereasontheaircraftwasdestroyedhas rathermoretodowithhumanfactorsissues bothonthegroundand in theair.Ithinkthat therecordoftheeventshouldberelaxingin the'operational'filingcabinet,ratherthanthe 'technical'one.

Let'sstartfromthebeginning.Paulisa microlighterthroughandthrough:hestarted flyingflexwingsin2010andsoondecidedthat hewantedtobuildhisownaircraftSelecting thefantasticMinimaxallwoodsingle-seater, hesetabouttheaircrafesconstruction.He obviouslyputhisheartandhissoulintothe buildbecausethefirstPermitforhismachine wasissuedinMarch2011,doublequicktimeif youaskme.Pauldidhisconversionflyingonan Ikarus042andassoonashewasconfident,he convertedontohisownmachine;hesoongot usedtoflyingitandtheaircraftbecameafirm friend.ThisMinimaxaircraftispoweredbythe

ubiquitousRatak447two-strokeenginewhich, initssinglecarburettorversion,produces about40bhpat6,600rpm.Normally,these enginesare'propped'sothattheyareableto achieveabout6,300rpmonthegroundwhich. bearinginmindthefairlyflatnatureofthe rpm/poweroutputgraphinthisrpmzone,is sufficientandveryclosetofullpower. Afterabout100hoursofflightoperation. Paulnoticedthattheenginewas'struggling' toreachthenormal6,200/6,300rpmandhad inmindthattheenginewasdueafullservice. Then.duringclimb-out,henotedthatthe aircraftwasnotclimbingwellandthattherpm intheclimbwasonlyjust6,000rpm.Timefor aservice?Paulthoughtso,andremovedthe engine,sendingitofftoanenginespecialist heknewfromthemicrolightcommunityfor afullcheck.Notwishingtocriticisethis.I'm surprisedthathefeltthatafteronly100hours inservicetheengineneededafulloverhaul. I'veoperated447enginesinallsortsof machinesovertheyears.theyareafantastic powerplantforverylightinstallationsandare particularlyresilient.

Whentheenginecameback,theprobable reasonforthepowerlosswasrecordedby theoverhaulerasa'stuckpistonring'.Paul. satisfiedwiththis,dulyrefittedtheengine andbegantheRotaxrecommendedground runftnperiod.Henoted,however,thatthe enginewasn'tperformingwell,infact,itwas stillstrugglingtoreach6.000rpmand,inPaul's words,"TheenginefeltflatwhenIopenedthe throttleatthetopend...itfeltlikeacarthat wasintoohighagear."

Iunderstandexactlywhatthatfeelslikeand, tosomeextent,thesimileisagoodone.Twostrokeengines,toreachfullpower.relyheavily onthetuningoftheexhaustpipe.Anormal two-strokepowercurve,whilstfairlyflatatthe topoftherpmrange.isverysteepindeedat lowergems.Anover-pitchedpropelleroran under-poweredenginecanpreventtheengine fromreachingitspowerband.Iftheengineis downonpowerforanyreason.thepropeller holdstheenginejustbehindthepowerband soitfeels'sluggish'tothepilot,justlikeamotor caroperatingintoohighagear

Clearly,whatevertheengineservicehad done,ithadn'treturnedtheenginetofull power.HereiswherePaulmadehisfirsterror ofjudgement:insteadofgettinghisengine specialisttocomeandhavealooktoseewhy theenginewasn'tperforming.hedecidedtofly themachine in thehopethataflightmightclear theproblem.Fromexperience.I'veneverknown thistohethecase.

Well,aswenowknow,timeintheairdidn't cleartheproblemand,eventhoughthe departureusedupmostofhisprivatestripin theprocess.Pauleventuallygotairbourneand begantheslowclimbawayHewasn'tsureat whatheighttheenginepowerdiedofftozero, 'everything'sabitofablur'.Heremembers, thinkingthatheshouldbegintoturnbackto theairfieldand,probablybeganthisturn.The nextthingherecalledwaslosingcontrolof theaircraftcompletely-"Suddenly.andvery quickly,theaircraftwasfacingtheotherway" thentheaircrafthittheground.

ThankgoodnessPaul'sguardianangelwas ondutythatafternoonandhewasn'thurtinthe impactbut,asyoucansee,hislabouroflove hasbeencompletelydestroyed.

So,Paul'ssecondmistake,nearlyhislast. wasthathetriedtoturnbacktotheairfield afteranenginefailureontheclimb-out.

LAAInspectorandRotaxengineexpert,KevinDilks,sentusthispictureofaRotax912 cylinderhead;I'lladmitthatwhenwefirstsawthepicturewecouldn'tworkoutwhat waswrong.Whenwelookedatapictureofanundamagedheadallbecameclear...the CKTexhausthas,forsomeunexplainedreason,wornitselfintothestructureofthe head.ThisheadcameoffaEuropaaircraftthatwasfitted,fromnew,withaCKTexhaust system.Theenginehadcompleted475hoursandhadbeenoperatingintheaircraftwell since1999.Ourfirstthoughtwasthatthisconnectionmusthavebeenlooseforsome timebeforetheproblemwasseen.Kevinfeelsthattheconnectionbetweenthehead andtheexhaustitself,whichisdifferenttotheRotaxdesign,maynotbesuitablein someinstallations.

Thispictureservestwopurposes;firstly,youcanseewhatthefaceoftheconnection point(betweentheexhaustandthehead)shouldlooklike,whileitalsoshowshow theconnectionismadeintheRotaxexhaustsystem.Notethatthetubepushesinto theheadwhichservesbothtopreventanyside-to-sidemovementandtoprotectthe materialofthehead.

Apilotshouldnevereverdothis:don'tget beguiledbysupposedexperts,iftheydiditand gotawaywithit,they'vebeenvery,verylucky Thisiswhatreallyhappenswhenanengine failsshortlyafterlake-offorintheearlystages ofaclimbaway.

Becauseyournoseiswellalgovethehorizon andyourspeedisfairlylow,iftheenginefails yourairspeedwilldisappearveryquicklyand youwillfallbehindthedragcurve.Bearin mind,tomakemattersworse.youprobably weren'texpectinganenginefailureso,initially youwon'tdoanythingatallandafewvaluable secondsandanaccompanyingfewknotsof airspeedwillbelost.Whenyouwakeuptothe problemit'sverylikelythattheaircraftwillbe flyingataverylowairspeedindeed,probably atahighangle-of-abackjustbelowthestall angleandthemachinewillfeelprettyweird, bothbecauseofthisverylowairspeedand thetactthatyou'renotusedtoclimbingaway withouttheenginerunning.Often,theresulting reducdoninairflowoverthecontrolsurfaces. particularlytheelevatorandtherudder,will meanthattheaircrabwiltkeelsloppyand unresponsive.Whenflyinginstructorsshout. LAAFlyerandSportCruiserownerStephenWinterhasrecentlybeendoing abitof'aviation'acrosstheChannelandhadinin-flightproblemwhich couldhaveendedupfarworsethanitdid.Here'sStephen'sstoryinhis ownwords.

Iwasflyingafactory-builtBreezerinGermanyTheflightitselfwas intendedtotakethreehoursbutaftertwo-and-three-quarterhoursmy passengerwasdesperateforacomfortbreak.Weselectedagrassairfield opentogeneraltrafficwithan800mrunwaysetamongstthehillsofthe BlackForest,whichwewereflyingover.

Thelandingwasfinealthoughthefieldwas,asweexpected,quite weLFiveminuteslaterwewerereadytotake-off,soIbacktrackedtothe extremeendofthefield.Thepowercheckandmagnetocheckswerefine. Iappliedfullthrottle,aquickglanceattherpmshowedwehad5,500soI washappy.Thegroundrollwaslongerthannormal,whichIhadexpected (duetotheamountofwaterontheground)andassoonaspossibleI gottheaircraftoffthegroundandacceleratedingroundeffect.Justas wereachedtheendoftherunway,therpmgraduallydeclinedtoabout 4,400rpmandtheclimbratedroppedtoabout200fpm.Infrontwereelectricitypylonsandatownwithnowheretolandandtotheleft weremanylayersofelectricitypylonsandasteephiltIturnedrightparallelwiththelinesuntilwehadenoughheighttocrossthem. Graduallyweinchedourwayup,allthetimeIwasexpectingtheenginetoquit,butfortunatelyitdidn'tWithinafewminuteswehad fieldswecouldusebutastheaircraftstillworkedwecontinuedtheclimb.Nothingwasobviouslywrong,exceptforthelackofpower. Weeventuallyreachedasafecruisingheightandcontinuedtoourdestination. Thisallsoundsabitscarytome.Takealookatthepictureaboveandseeifyoucanseewhatmighthavehappenedtocausethis suddenpowerreduction.

Stephenandhispalreachedtheirdestinationsafelyandthefollowingdaytheylifted thecowlstoseeiftheycouldseeanythingobviouslywrong.Theycouldn'tsothey employedalocalRotaxenginespecialisttofullyinspecttheengine.Stephensent metheveryextensivelistofchecksconductedandeverythingseemedtobeworking fine.So,ratherthanflytheaircrafthimself,heemployedalocaltestpilottoseeifhe couldreplicatethesymptoms;sameresult,powerreductionaftertake-off.Here'swhat happenedaftertheaircraftlandedfromthequicklyabortedtestflight.

Wefixedanadditionaltietorestrainthatpipe,eventhoughitfeltprettyrigidtous, andrepeatedthetestEverythingwasfineandfull-powerclimbswererestored.The conclusionwasthatfromacoldstarteverythingworkedfine,thefuelpipewascold andstiff.Whenwelandedforthecomfortbreakandthentooktotheairafteronlyfive minutes,theenginehadcookedalittleandthepipehadsoftenedwithheat.Whenwetook-offthesecondtime,theairflowthrough thecowlwasenoughtodeflectthe(nowsofter)pipeandpartiallycloseonethrottle,althoughtheenginestillranamazinglysmoothly Sincethentheaircrafthasbehavedperfectly. Briancomments,'Wehavehadacouple ofdiscussionsregardingthelackof lubricationonpre-assembledpartsonthe AlpiPioneer300.Ihavejustcomeacross anotherpotentialgotcha.Theelevatorbell crankismountedinthetailoftheaircraft andisdeliveredinanassembledstate. Therearenoinstructionstodismantleit andlubricatethebearingpriortofitting. Thepivotconsistsoftwounsealedroller bearingsthatarecompletelyunlubricated, apartfromanystorageprotectionthatthe bearingmanufacturermayhaveapplied. Thetwobellcrankplatesarepre-riveted inplacesoitisnoteasytoinspector lubricateonceinsitu.'

Thankyouverymuchtoallofyouwhoare continuingtosendusinformationabout theongoingJabiru2200rotorarmissue; thepicturesaboveshowwhatLANer GordonRodmellfoundwhenheinspected theignitionsystemonhisMenestrel2 recently.Asyoucansee,ifyou'vebeen followingthisstory,thetypeappears tobeofanacceptabledesign(SeeLAA AlertAWA1410onourwebsite)butyou canalsoseewhat'shappened.Gordon explains,'IhavejustcarriedoutLAA/MOD/ ENG/JAB/001onmyengineandreplaced bothrotorarmswithBoschJabiru approvedrotorarms.Iwasveryalarmed atthestateoftherotorarmswhichI removedastheyhadbothcrackedatthe base,andtheyhadonlycompleted30 hourssincebeingfittedatmylastannual service.UpuntilremovalIhadnothadany problemwiththeenginerunningandhad nomisfiringbutitisclearfromthephotos thatitwouldnothavebeentoolongbefore Iwouldhavehadanenginefailure.Both rotorarmshadcrackedinthesameplace; neitherhadcomeoffthedrivespindle buttheyfeltalittleloosebeforeremoval. Asitturnedout,Paul,whenhethoughtabout hiserrorsaftertheevent,acceptedthatthere wereanumberoffieldshecouldhaveeasily pulledoffagoodengine-offlandinginto,more orlessstraightahead.Instead,andI'vefelt thetemptation,get-home-itistookoverand,as hebegantheturnbackmanoeuvre,onewing undoubtedlystalledandtheaircraftenteredan incipientspin.

BecausetheMinimaxhasaverylight wingloading,itmorethanlikelycameout ofthespinonitsown,strikogtheground ashorttimeafterwards,withatleastsome forwardmomentum.Hadthisnothave happened(andspinninginwindgradientis, byitsverynature,anunpredictableno-go zone)-itmaynothavedone-theaircraft wouldhavecrashedvertically.Ifthishad happenedtheendresultwouldn'thavebeen quitesogood.Asitturnedout,however,Paul islookingaroundtorhisnextbuildproject.He explainedthathehasflyinginhisbloodnow andhe'snotgoingtogiveupbecauseofa simplemistake...mykindaguy!!

EUROPA/ROTAX912-OLT EXHAUSTSYSTEM/CYLINDER HEADDAMAGE

Anybodyinvolvedinthecareandmaintenance oflightaircraftengineswilltellyouthatone ofthemosttroublesomemarriageswithin theenginecompartmentistherelationship betweenMrExhaustPipeandMissCylinder Head.Naturally,thesetwocomponentscome togetherthroughneedand,bearinginmind theirdifferences,probablywouldn'tfeaturein either'sidealdatinglist.

Thesafetyofthewholeaircraftreliesheavily onthisrelationshipbeingacloseoneandgreat careisgiventoensuringthatit'sgivenevery chanceofsuccessBothMissHeadandMr Pipehaveatoughjobtodo,andtheyhaveto doitinoneofthemostdifficultenvironments possible;it'snotsurprisingthereforethat, justoccasionally.thingscangowrong.Pilots andaircraftengineers,ofcourse,arewell awarethatthisoddcouplingneedstobe constantlywatchedandanyhintoftrouble dealtwithquickly:that'swhyavisualcheckof theexhaustsystemfeaturesineverypre-flight checklistI'veeverseen.

Justlikeinanyrelationship.thePipe's problemscanshowthemselvesfirstaslittle annoyances-asmallinappropriateescape ofgashereorthere.Orperhaps,andthis particularproblemmorenormallyappliesto MrPipe,itbeingthat'littlebitloose'in company.Whateverthecircumstance,the pilotandengineerwouldbeverywisenot toletthesemisdemeanourspasswithout reproach.

I'veattachedacoupleofpicturessentby LAAInspectorandRotaxenginespecialist. KevinDilks.He'shavinotodealwiththe completebreakdownintherelationship betweenaCKTExhaustsystemandthe cylinderheadonaRotax912enginethat normallypowersaEuropaaircraft,butnow sitsinhisworkshop.Kevinexplainedthathe's neverseenanythinglikethiskindofdamage toacylinderheadandisworriedthatthe designoftheconnectionusedontheCKT exhaustmaynotbeuptothejobHe explainedthatRotax'sexhaustsusea completelydifferentdesign.

It'sabsolutelyessentialthatevery componentonanaircraftisthoroughly inspectedbeforefitment;thisisespecially truewhenbuildingassemblingan aeroplanefromakit.Thepicturesabove ofaZenairCH701mainundercarriage axleshowclearlythatafailureofthe connectionbetweentheaxleandthe attachmentplatehasoccurredbecause ofapoorweldduringthecomponent's manufacture.Notethatthere'salmostno weldpenetrationintheaxleitself,note alsothoughthecleverlydesignedjoint whichservestoreducetheloadsinthe welditself.Thiscomponentlasted200 hoursbeforefinallygivingway.
