WHEN TO TRAVEL Contrary to common belief, you can travel in India throughout the year. India sits within the same latitudes as Australia – when you think Kerala (Kochi and Kovalam) in the South, think Darwin or Bali. When you think Delhi in the North, think Brisbane. The perfect time to visit is between September and May. Personally we love Summer in India. The monsoon is a wonderful experience, tourist numbers are low, and hotel rates are brilliant, but for perfect weather it is hard to ignore the period from October to April.

17 million people live and work in Delhi. And what a place it is. Apart from being the nation’s Capital, all the contrasts and contradictions of India can be seen within its boundaries. Nothing provides more contrast than the boulevards of British inspired New Delhi, and the wonderful alleyways and laneways of Old Delhi. In seconds, the visitor is transported from the 21st Century back to medieval times. Broad tree-lined roadways give way to laneways too narrow for vehicular trafﬁc. Fresh produce, spices and hard-wares are spread everywhere, and cows, camels and even elephants can be found in the streets. The Jami Masjid mosque towers over the Old city, and the walls of the Red Fort can be seen from every viewpoint.

SIGHTSEEING THE MUGHALS’ OLD DELHI HALF DAY This wonderful tour provides an exploration of the lanes and alleyways of the old city, as well as a visit to the famous Jami Masjid Mosque (the largest in all of India), and the Red Fort. Your personal guide will accompany you throughout. Cows and camels provide trafﬁc hazards, and even elephants can be found in the old city. You will travel by private vehicle and bicycle rickshaw! The bicycle rickshaw allows you to really come to grips with the life of the old city, with its sounds and smells, its colour and magic, and the realities of life amidst one of the world’s most populous cities. The Jami Mosque is an extraordinary building, and there will be time to explore its courtyards and covered ways. The Red Fort dominates the skyline of the old city, and you will be able to view those areas not inhabited by the Indian Army. This is a must do trip that will take you back in time.

LUTYENS’ NEW DELHI HALF DAY From the edges of Old Delhi, you will explore many of the marvels from the days of the Raj and the British occupation of India. Planned by Edwin Lutyens, New Delhi provides an extraordinary contrast with the old city. The Houses of Parliament and the Rashtrapati Bhavan (residence of the President) found on the beautiful avenue known as Rajpath, the India Gate, the boulevards of New Delhi and the beautiful colonial architecture all provide contrast against the historic ancient sites of Qtab Minar and the incredible Humayun’s Tomb. You will also visit Raj Ghat, the site of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation, set amidst a beautiful garden and parkland. This half day excursion provides a great contrast between Old and New Delhi.

This is a magnificent hotel reflecting the Colonial style with a reference to Art Deco. Before entering the foyer the scent of jasmine is evident, and once inside it is clear that flower arrangements are an integral part of the overall ambience. Pure white walls broken by superb colonial era prints, marble floors with beautiful rugs and carpets, and wonderful antique furnishings all present a property amongst the best in the World. All rooms are superb. Beautifully appointed, with marble floors, huge bathrooms, King-size beds and wonderful framed prints. If the budget allows, try one of the Heritage Suites. The garden views are excellent, and the extra space is outstanding. These rooms feature beautiful Mughal inspired prints and artefacts, but retain the Colonial style of the property. Suites are wonderful, highly recommended, and an incredible experience. They are not huge, but their decor, floor plans and amenities are world-class. Restaurants at the Imperial are brilliant, with our favourite being the “Spice Route” featuring Asian and Pacific cuisine. To enjoy the Imperial you will need to book well ahead, as this is a World renowned property.

The Oberoi is situated in New Delhi, in a garden setting, and adjacent to a golf course. Although austere from the outside, the hotel presents an entirely different ambience once you step inside. The doorman, dressed in the livery of the age of the Raj, invites you to enter, and inside you are presented with a long gallery style reception and foyer. The design is a perfect blend of contemporary modern and Art Deco highlighted by beautifully framed Indian prints and artefacts. The decor is minimalist and done with superb touch – nothing is over-done. Superb ﬂower arrangements and bowls of rose petals are found throughout the property, giving a fresh lightly scented effect. Rooms are large and beautifully appointed. Toiletries are all Ayurveda inspired, and gorgeous. The hotel is incredibly quiet – there is absolutely no trafﬁc noise. A great respite from the bustle of Delhi. Breakfast is taken in the “360 degrees” restaurant, which is truly stylish, modern, and a pleasure to be in. Decor is beautiful and all cutlery, glassware and linen is true quality.

The Taj Mahal Hotel Delhi is a lovely property. Set amidst the grand design of Lutyens’ New Delhi, the hotel is very well located. The foyer is outstanding, with Mughal inﬂuenced decor and design, and “Machan”, the Indian restaurant is fabulous – wonderful decor and brilliant authentic Indian food. As with all Taj properties, service is wonderful throughout the property. Rooms are simply decorated and very well appointed. Club Rooms are a little larger with the beneﬁt of a personalised butler service. There is an excellent spa set up, with full Ayurvedic treatments available, and the large swimming pool is within a garden setting. In the evening, Rick’s Bar is a great place to unwind.

The market town of Agra is dominated by the Taj Mahal. And why not! Of all the World’s greatest architectural masterpieces – whether they be the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China, The Parthenon, the Eiffel Tower or the Taj Mahal, only one was built for love. The Taj Mahal. ‘A solitary tear suspended on the cheek of time.’ (Rabindranath). All the photographs, all the written comments, all the breathless descriptions cannot do justice to this wonderful building. This truly is an example of ‘seeing is believing’. AMARVILAS DELUXE | Set in beautiful gardens adjacent to the Taj Mahal, this modern property is styled along a fusion of Mughal architectural style and Hindi inﬂuences. Cascading pools, courtyards and a brilliant swimming pool complete an extraordinary ﬁrst impression. The foyer, lounge bar, reception area and tea/coffee lounge all have Taj views across the gardens. Decor is truly beautiful in all the public areas, but takes second place to the dominant views of the Taj Mahal. Rooms we have chosen are large, and appointments are in style without being overdone. There are views of the Taj from the bedroom and the bathroom – even the loo has a view! The bathroom is enormous, with a central free-standing bath (from which you can view the Taj!) and a spacious shower alcove. There are two restaurants, with the Indian restaurant ‘Esphahan’ being our favourite. The spa set up is excellent, and Ayurvedic treatments are perfect, though there are a range of different styles of treatments. It is hard to beat watching the sun set over the Taj whilst in a milk bath covered by rose petals. Truly!

Should you recover equilibrium from such a thing, early next morning we’ll take you to the Taj by motorized golf carts – all part of the service. This is the premier property in Agra, with nothing else at this stage which is comparable. It is not a huge hotel, and you must book well ahead if you want to stay here.

Upon entering Jaipur, Crown Prince Albert exclaimed, “Look, a pink city!” In reality, the dominant colour is really terracotta. Jaipur is at the heart of Rajasthan, and is famous for its forts, palaces and superbly laid out city plan. Brightly coloured saris, incredible architecture and bustling crowded markets are the overriding impacts, which face the traveller. Fabulous jewellery, vivid materials and leather goods are just some of the shopping highlights, and of course the wonderful facade of the Palace of the Winds, the City Palace and the magniﬁcent Amber Fort are the key attractions. Known as the “Jewel of Jaipur” this property once belonged to the Maharaja of Jaipur. It is the most elegant historical property in Jaipur, and boasts some of the most gracious rooms in all of India. From the time you enter the grounds of the property, you begin a magical journey. The overall effect is sophisticated, elegant and lavish. For those wanting the absolute best of the best, the Rambagh Palace is the one! Standard rooms are superb in every way, with quality linen and ﬁxtures, and authentic decor and artefacts. Suites are beautiful, and they represent real value. Restaurants include a great European restaurant, a fabulous Indian restaurant and the famous Polo Bar for late snacks and cocktails. Elephant polo is played in the grounds of the Palace, and dancers, magicians and instrumentalists entertain guests every evening – you can even have your fortune told! One of the highlights of the Palace stay is the outstanding Spa centre. Ayurveda treatments, traditional Indian massage, yoga classes, beauty therapies and other pampering are available throughout your stay. A brilliant property, but you must book well ahead.

This is another property which once belonged to the Maharaja of Jaipur. The entrance leads to a long driveway past playing ﬁeld where elephant polo is played. Further on there are traditionally styled Mughal gardens. The palace is a beautiful building, with an impressive presence. It has been fully renovated, and rooms are light and airy. Ground ﬂoor rooms lead to a small garden with a coffee table and chairs. All our rooms are tastefully decorated, quite simple and have beautifully framed traditional prints on the walls. Throughout the property there are impressive antiques in all public areas The main dining room is excellent, and overlooks the front gardens of the palace. Food served includes traditional Indian dishes as well as European cuisine, and the meals are excellent. There is one other restaurant specialising in the cuisine of Rajasthan. This one is very brightly decorated, and departs a little from the traditional feel of the palace. The Jai Mahal is quiet, understated and a welcome refuge with great service standards.

Almost mid-way between Agra and Jaipur is the magniﬁcent Amanbagh. Part of the Aman Resort group, this is truly a unique resort. Set amidst the Alwar Hills, the property is within a walled oasis of calm. From the moment you enter the grounds you know that you are in a special place. The resort pays homage to the traditional Mughal architectural style, and the 4 room types are all magniﬁcent. Of course, it is hard to go past the Pool Pavilions with their private pools and gardens. Other rooms feature private courtyards, terraces or balconies, and all have King size beds, sound systems, separate living areas and gorgeous bathrooms. There are 3 dining options, with our favourite being the Roof Terrace from which you gain wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Food is wonderful, and of course service standards throughout the resort are impeccable. The health and spa set up is traditional in concept but contemporary in practice, and is a highlight of any stay. Nearby are traditional villages, a small lake and stunning ruins. Fancy a private dinner? The staff will willingly set up a private dinner on the roof of nearby ruins where you can watch the canopy of stars as you dine. Superb. Here is another property that must be booked well ahead.

Another of the Oberoi ‘Vilas’ selection, and set within magniﬁcent gardens. The forecourt leads to a Reception area decorated with an elegant and understated Rajasthani inﬂuence. The property is expansive, and golf-carts are used to take you around should you wish. Our rooms are set amidst lush gardens with water features and a classic pool area. Beautifully decorated with Rajasthani artefacts, they feature huge four-poster beds. Shuttered windows open to the gardens. Bathroom are huge, and the shower opens directly to a tiny courtyard. If your budget allows, try the Luxury Tents. Solid walls and a canopied roof set off a wonderful room/suite. A separate living area, private outside courtyards and a truly elegant Rajasthani ambience complete these ‘rooms’. Each has its own private landscaped gardens. There is one restaurant which is wonderful, with either alfresco dining in a beautiful courtyard setting or within the dining room. Dancers and instrumentalists entertain guests each evening. Rajvilas is a relaxing experience set within a private compound.

Ranthambhore is arguably the best tiger reserve in the World, but it is important to understand that there is a big difference between the game reserves of Africa, and those of India where wildlife is far less prevalent. There is no guaranteed sighting of the elusive tiger, but the reserve deﬁnitely provides the best chance of anywhere else other than a zoo! Leopard, deer and crocodiles can also be found in the Reserve. The resorts we have chosen are included for their proximity to the Reserve as well as their uncompromising sophistication, luxury and privacy. They are worthy of a visit in their own right.

Romantic, beautifully laid out and elegant. Vanyavilas adheres to all the Oberoi’s ‘Vilas’ strengths and attributes of friendly and outstanding service, beautifully landscaped gardens and a refuge from the world at large. There are 25 identical tents, all containing kingsize four poster beds, beautifully embroidered canopies, and regal style furnishings. Every tent has a private garden as well as a sun-deck, and the ensuites contain a free standing bath and separate shower. All the mod-cons of a 5 star hotel room are contained within each tent. The restaurant comprises an indoors dining area as well as a courtyard – in winter you are able to enjoy the courtyard in front of a blazing ﬁre. In reality, guests are able to dine wherever they wish on the property – just let the staff know what you wish. The spa and ﬁtness centre is set right on the ornamental lake, and the therapies are excellent. This is a wonderful destination in its own right, whether or not you are lucky enough to see a tiger!

This is an Aman Resort wilderness camp, comprising luxury tents on the outskirts of one of the finest tiger reserves in the world. Blending in unobtrusively with the surrounding landscape, there are only 10 accommodation tents. Kingsize beds, full ensuites, living areas separate to the bedroom and minimalist furniture all combine to give guests a very special ‘camping’ experience. Tents are fully air-conditioned, and have ceiling fans. Meals are served at different spots throughout the camp, each with its own special views and ambience. A highlight is dinner around a roaring campfire on cold winter nights. There is a lounge tent, library, dining tent and spa tent, all luxuriously fitted out. The entire experience here is all about relaxation, luxury and service within a natural environment. Service standards are world-class. Best of all, of course, are the guided excursions to find the elusive tigers! Aman I Khas is one of the world’s best luxury camps, and it is wise to stay at least 3 nights if possible. MUGHALS AND MAHARAJAS TOUR 9 DAYS/8 NIGHTS This journey combines the great architecture of the Mughal forts and mosques, with the lavish excesses of the early Maharajas. Beginning and ending in Delhi, the itinerary includes our Mughals Old Delhi Tour and Lutyens New Delhi Tour (Page 4). From Delhi we will drive by private vehicle along the “Grand Trunk Road of India” to Agra. Camel carts, cows, trucks and cars crowd the road, making this an incredible experience. Once at Agra, you’ll spend plenty of time at the glorious Taj Mahal which we visit at sunrise, before continuing your road trip to Jaipur. Along the way, explore the deserted Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, abandoned after water supplies ran dry. An hour or two wandering with your guide through the complex will enable you to capture the vision of the architects and the desolation of the city’s failure. The journey then continues on to the ‘Pink City’ – Jaipur. At the heart of Rajasthan, Jaipur’s markets sell a huge range of brilliantly coloured saris, exotic jewellery and trinkets of every description. The city is laid out clearly, and has a calm order about it. High above the city you will visit the Amber Fort, with your ﬁnal ascent to the entrance being on elephant back. There will be plenty of time to explore the fort, and also the city of Jaipur, with its famous ‘Palace of the Winds’.

Set on the banks of beautiful Lake Pichola, Udaipur is a beautiful city. Incredible palaces, famous Hindu temples, exotic architecture and a slower life-style all combine to make your visit special. Explore the wonderful City Palace with its spectacular views over the lake, or journey across the waters to Jag Mandir, a Palace set on an island with beautiful views back to the city. Climb the steps of the Jagdish Mandir temple, with its incredible carvings literally covering every centimetre of its exterior. Built on Udaipur’s highest point, the temple is central to the life of the city. Below the city, take time to visit the water gardens of Sahelion Ki Bari (Gardens of the Maiden), and wander in the calm and peace of this lovely escape from the hustle and bustle.

TAJ LAKE PALACE HOTEL DELUXE | This hotel is a gem! Set on an island, this converted palace sits in the middle of Lake Pichola. From the shores of the lake, the hotel presents a fairy-tale image, which is not lost upon arrival. All guests arrive by shuttle boat, and are met at the landing prior to being escorted to reception. The rooms in every category are superbly decorated, and all our rooms have water views. The suites are gorgeous, and the ‘Sarva Shresth Royal Suite’ is quite unbelievable – huge, lavish, great views – the lot! Ask Bill Gates – he stayed for 10 days! Décor in all public areas is truly beautiful, and in very good taste with eclectic though harmonious examples of the past 300 years of Indian history and lifestyle. There are two excellent restaurants – one serves ﬁne Western style food, and the other is a specialist Indian restaurant. Both have fabulous menus. There is an excellent though quite small swimming pool. Make sure that you ﬁnd time to enjoy the modern Spa/treatment facility overlooking Udaipur’s wonderful City Palace. This is the premier hotel to stay in Udaipur and it is worth it. It’s small, and it is essential to book well ahead. Six months is not too early!

OBEROI UDAIVILAS DELUXE

DEVI GARH DELUXE |

This sprawling hotel is on the banks of Lake Pichola, and has wonderful views across the lake to the city. The entrance foyer is magniﬁcent – large, airy and yet welcoming. Brilliantly done, this is another superb property with a very large number of room types. As with each of the Oberoi ‘Vilas’ hotels, the lead-in rooms are excellent. The best rooms are those alongside a great swimming pool set up with ‘semi-private’ facilities (each room has a private pool entry and bathing area, though it is possible to swim all the way along so that privacy is not 100% assured.) There are excellent suites available with fully private pools and views across the lake. The suites are not huge, but are beautifully proportioned and with every possible convenience. All rooms in this property are very well appointed, spacious and superbly decorated with authentic Indian prints and ornaments. Soft furnishings are in wonderfully designed and evocative fabrics. Throughout the hotel there are quiet and contemplative places to sit and enjoy a gin and tonic whilst watching life unfold on Lake Pichola just below. Perfect.

Devi Garh is a jewel in the crown! Set in a beautiful valley surrounded by rugged mountains, the old fort sits atop a natural mesa and is truly stunning. On one side is a small village, and on the other are fertile farmlets. The fort was built in the early 18thC, and in 1997, it was purchased by the current owner, and a 7-year re-construction and refurbishment program turned the derelict complex in to a magniﬁcent all suite hotel. As guests enter the forecourt of the property, they are showered with fresh rose petals, as was once done for the Mughals upon their return to their palaces. It is a wonderfully welcoming gesture. Because of the heritage nature of the building, no two suites are alike. The interior design is extremely contemporary, and yet it melds perfectly with the old and historic exterior. The rooms are quite quirky, with varying levels and steps, but the overall impact is quite special.

The swimming pool overlooks the wonderful mountains and valleys, and there is a beautiful restaurant decorated entirely in white and cream, with a very hip and stylish appeal. A separate bar and lounge provides another area to sit and contemplate the views. The largest suite – the Devi Garh Suite – is special with its own very large black marble pool. Keep an eye out for reclusive celebrities – they love this place. Better still, book the suite yourself! And the price is reasonable. Also in the complex is a wonderful spa/wellness centre, and there are literally a dozen private dining and entertainment rooms which guests are encouraged to use. Devi Garh provides a very quiet and special place to take the pace out of a trip to India. For those who want some activities, hiking, horse-riding and camel safaris are available. The pool area is excellent, and the roof top bar and restaurant area has fabulous views across the valley. Try the Risala a la carte restaurant with its fusion of Rajasthani and European cuisine. Pillars restaurant and coffee bar is a wonderful place to sit and while the time away whilst the resident peacocks graze nearby – and even under tables! In the evenings, Trophy Bar is a great spot for a late night cocktail. This property is truly a wonderful experience.

This property is a modern recreation of a palace, and is architecturally linked to Marwar and Mughal design. Only 15 mins from the Mehengarh Fort, which dominates the skyline of Jodhpur, the hotel, features an array of differing experiences. Dune dinners, barbeques by the pool and rooftop dining are all possible, as well as dining in the hotels excellent restaurants. Décor in this property reﬂects the Mughal and Marwar histories of the region. Rooms are spacious, with our favorites being the pool view rooms and the suites – although suites are not huge, they are beautifully furnished and have lovely outlooks over the pool and garden. Service is excellent throughout the property, and staff are well tuned to the needs of guests, and are able to organize any number of requests from suggestions of where to eat to ideas for exploration. The pool area is at the heart of the property, and provides a welcoming calm oasis amidst the hubbub of Jodhpur.

Next day you ﬂy to Mumbai, one of our favourite cities in India, where we visit the Gateway of India before visiting the Jain Temples and the Dhobi Ghats, a huge open-air laundry, which makes fascinating viewing. Kolkata takes its name from Kalikata, which was one of the three villages in the area just prior to the arrival of the British in 1690. There are now 4.5 million residents. Kolkata was originally designated by the British as the nation capital, before ﬁnally moving the capital designation to Delhi. ‘The City of Joy’, written by Dominique Lapierre, focuses on the unquenching and incredible optimism found amongst some of the poorest peoples on Earth who live in the slums of Kolkata. ELEPHANTA CAVES AND MUMBAI HARBOUR TOUR HALF DAY

This half-day tour will introduce you to the living history of Mumbai. We will pick you up in your private vehicle from your hotel, and en-route visit the Gateway to India. It was built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, complete with four turrets and intricate latticework carved into the yellow basalt stone. Today this symbol of colonialism draws droves of tourists and locals. Behind the arch, steps lead down to the water where small colourful boats can take you to all points of the harbour. Driving between the various sites, you will pass the home of Rudyard Kipling, see the amazing World Heritage listed Victoria Station (now named Chhatrapati Shivarji Terminus) with its Victorian and Gothic architecture, and enjoy the hundreds of other vignettes of life in Mumbai. Later we will visit Dhobi Ghat - situated at Saat Rasta near Mahalaxmi Station, almost two hundred dhobis (laundrymen) and their families work together in this enormous outdoor laundry in what has always been a hereditary occupation. This is a fascinating sight. Finally you’ll visit Kamala Nehru Park – not noted for grand gardens, it is to Mumbai what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris - a vantage point over the entire city.

We will pick you up from your hotel and escort you down to the harbour below the Gateway of India for a 60min boat ride to the island. As you alight on to the island note the carved elephants near the landing after which the Portuguese named the island. Then it’s on to the caves. This World Heritage Site is hewn out of solid rock, and dates back to 600 AD. Amazingly, the caves attract more visitors each year than the entire city of Mumbai. But no wonder! This place resonates with the spiritual energy of India. The cave complex is a collection of shrines, courtyards, inner cells, grand halls and porticos arranged in the splendid symmetry of Indian rock-cut architecture, and are ﬁlled with exquisite stone sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. At the entrance to the caves is the famous Trimurti, the celebrated trinity of Elephanta: there’s Lord Brahma the Creator, Lord Vishnu, the preserver and Lord Shiva the Destroyer. This is a ‘must see’ place to visit.

A fabulous property in every way. There are two wings to the hotel – the Heritage ‘palace’ wing and the newer ‘tower wing’. The Heritage wing is our first choice, with marvellous rooms, authentic colonial ambience and a truly luxurious feel. Staff are incredibly attentive. The property is situated on the waterfront, directly across the road from the “Gateway of India”. There are 7 restaurants in the complex, including a Japanese restaurant overseen by Japan’s “Iron Chef”. The entry to the heritage wing takes you beneath the most extraordinary staircase – quite beautiful, but thank goodness for modern lifts! Walls throughout the property are adorned with original paintings and first edition prints, valued at many millions of USD, and the effect is wonderful. Rooms are elegant, roomy and with every practical modern convenience. If you want something really special, try the magnificent suites on the 5th and 6th floor of the Taj Club wing, with butler service, separate dining and living rooms, surround sound, dressing rooms, huge bathrooms and enormous bedrooms. The pool area is relaxing, set in gardens and near beautiful breezeways where you can enjoy cocktails or tea and coffee. A spectacular property.

This hotel is set across the other side of the peninsular to the Taj property. This area is quite beautiful. Comprising an extensive avenue which skirts the harbour, it is truly spectacular. At night, the lights of the buildings are known as the “Queens Necklace”, and the Oberoi has the best view. In many ways, the first appearance of this property is of a typical city hotel. It is tall and imposing, though once inside everything changes. The foyer is a giant atrium, with free space above you right up to the top floor of the hotel. It is very impressive. Beautifully furnished and with a huge array of specialty shops. There are 3 very popular restaurants – Italian, Thai and Indian. Rooms overlooking the bay are good, although bathrooms are not big – even the bathrooms in the suites are small. Rooms are beautifully furnished, and the suites with sea views are good value. Décor throughout is elegant – colonial with lovely touches of Indian heritage. There is a small pool area shared by the adjoining Hilton hotel. As with most properties, there is a popular spa/wellness centre featuring Ayurveda treatments as well as Thai and Swedish massage. The Oberoi is a modern, comfortable property befitting the excellent Oberoi reputation.

Stretching from Kochi in the North to Kovalam in the South, there is a beautiful and largely untouched coastline paralleled by a network of canals, rivers and lakes, high tea-growing hills and tropical villages dotted throughout. Totally different in climate and geography from the North, Kerala is a laid back tropical experience sure to relax every traveller. Home to Ayurvedic treatments and wellbeing centres, it is a region to enjoy slowly. Magniﬁcent seafood, relaxed peoples and beautiful tropical scenery emphasise Kerala’s genuine claim to being part of God’s Own Country.

KOCHI Formerly known as Kochi, the city sprawls over a large area intersected by its harbour and waterways. The area known as Fort Cochin is the best area to stay. Colonised by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, it retains fragments of the heritage of its imperialists. Fort Cochin is home to the famous Chinese ﬁshing nets, which line the harbour entrance, bustling waterside markets, churches, mosques, temples and a rapidly dwindling Jewish population with their own synagogue. Now numbering only 13 members it is believed that the Jews ﬁrst settled in Kochi in the days of King Solomon. A remarkable and unexpected story. Kochi is a must see destination, time permitting.

BRUNTON BOATYARD SUPERIOR | Position, position, position! Set in historic Fort Cochin at the entrance to Kochi harbour, this wonderful colonial style property oozes charm, style and an elegant décor which reflects the property’s heritage. The hotel is 5 mins walk from the famous Chinese fishing nets, and there are colourful local markets at the front door. This is easily Kochi’s best location for a hotel. All rooms look out over the harbour, are of good size, and the suites are large though simply decorated and furnished. The foyer is an open design with beautiful fans, and along the breezeways are punkhas (hand powered ‘fans’). There are 3 excellent restaurants, one of which is set high on an outside terrace overlooking the harbour and the busy shipping lane. There is a swimming pool right next to the harbour, and it is possible to watch dolphins play as you improve your tan. The gardens are superb with some magnificent ancient shade trees, and the scent of frangipani and jasmine. Service is brilliant. This is a property noted for its simplicity and attention to the colonial detail. There are few rooms, and few alternative hotels, so early booking is a must.

This small private hotel is lovely, and is a great alternative for those not interested in harbour views, but who want to be in the heart of Fort Cochin. Our favourite rooms are the Suites. They are not huge, but they are very comfortable and superbly decorated, and compare in price with other properties’ lead in rooms. All rooms are beautifully furnished with local style artefacts and furniture. The property is a heritage property, and every room is different. Some have private courtyards, and all open directly on to the pool area. The pool is quite small, but provides a welcome respite. It’s setting is very pretty. The public areas are relaxing, intimate and possess great tropical ambience. Malabar House is wonderfully situated close to the best that Kochi has to offer. There are 2 excellent in-house restaurants, which serve really good quality traditional food in the Kerala style – lots of good fresh ﬁsh. For lots of different ﬂavours try the ‘thali’.

This hotel is situated on Willingdon Island, about 20 mins from Fort Cochin. There is a heritage wing built a century ago, and the rooms overlooking the harbour are excellent. The best rooms are those with sea views. Rooms are quite big, and are very well laid out with appropriate heritage décor. This is quite a lovely property, with grounds quite literally running down to the harbour where it is possible to watch dolphins play. A big bonus with this property is that there is an excellent spa/wellness facility, and there are 4 very good restaurants. The Thai restaurant is excellent, though quite formal. The outdoor barbeque restaurant is beautifully situated overlooking the harbour. The pool is large and provides a focal point for the property. As with many hotels in India, there are not many rooms, so early bookings are essential.

kumarakom

Kumarakom is a peninsular jutting out in to Lake Vembanad. It is the heart of Kerala. There are many small villages, with the only large town being Kottayam. Meandering lagoons and backwaters are home to migratory and native birds, and there is an excellent bird sanctuary. Five star properties are few and far between, but there are terriﬁc houseboats for discerning travellers as well as a few properties of real class.

En-route to Kumarakom, this bungalow styled property is set amidst a coconut plantation and adjacent to a ﬁsherman’s village. Right on the Arabian Sea, and part of the Malabar Coast, the beach is wide, sandy and many kilometres long.

This resort is right on Lake Vembanad, and can be reached directly by boat (our rice barges literally tied up at the private dock) The foyer and restaurants are all open air but under shelter, and meals are usually buffet style, with fresh local produce being a highlight.

This brand new property has only been opened for 6 months. It is situated right on Lake Vembanad, and is a beautiful property. The resort is built around a beautiful lagoon, and the grounds are expansive. Built in 2006, the property is looking fabulous. All rooms are airy and well appointed. There is a combination of hotel-style rooms, bungalows and suites. The premier suites, each of which has its own pool overlooking the Lake, are set amongst mature and original trees. These are the pick of the rooms in this property. Guests move around the extensive grounds on electric buggies. There are 3 restaurants, a bar and even a dedicated cigar bar. The highlight of this resort is the state of the art Spa/wellness centre – it is incredible, and has a huge array of treatments available, including Ayurvedic, Thai and Swedish, and an amazing selection of high tech spas, steam rooms, colour therapies and ﬂoatation tanks.

There is a specialist Ayurvedic spa, and the resort is popular with those wanting a simple, quiet hideaway with the option of yoga classes and spa treatments. Paul McCartney has stayed here with his family. The rooms are nicely furnished, and there are excellent suites with private pools (not big, but adequate for a good splash and a cool down. Deﬁnitely not for swimming laps!) Though it looks quite basic, the resort has all the mod cons you would expect of a 4* property. It is the only property on this entire beach. Very healthy, very private. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and service is excellent.

Meandering Pool Rooms have direct access to a wonderful swimming pool, which connects each of these rooms. Bathrooms are inside/ outside bathrooms – a very pleasant experience. The suites with private pools are excellent. All furnishings are in the Kerala style, and beautiful wood-work is a feature of the rooms and public areas. Heritage rooms are literally built from timbers and structures taken from a long abandoned local village. The immaculate hotel grounds are beautiful, with many species of tropical plants and ﬂowers. The Ayurvedic spa here is excellent, and must be experienced.

RICE BARGE HOUSEBOATS DELUXE | Adapted and modernized from the traditional kettuvallam boat of Kerala used to transport rice, the kettuvallam is a wonderfully relaxing experience in itself. The vessel is a traditional dhow shape and about 20m long. They are a wooden craft with living areas made from bamboo, teak and wickerwork. The cabins are large by boating standards, with queen-size beds, air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. They are very attractively decorated and laid out very well. On the bow of the barge are the dining and sitting areas, open on 3 sides. It is simply wonderful to sit at dinner watching the village life go past, or to sit after your meal in the comfortable lounges. There is a crew of three: captain, crewman, and cook. The canals and lakes are a photographer’s paradise. You will cruise slowly past small farms and ﬁshing houses on the banks of the waterways. There are glimpses of local life around every corner, and many different shapes and sizes of boats, some with a ﬁsherman, some carrying building materials, wood, sand, stone etc, and even farm animals! On the banks, children wave and families are bathing and doing their washing.

Our houseboats are full charters so you do not share with anyone else. The meals are freshly cooked, and there is an abundance of fresh seafood. The crew are excellent, and once again, service standards are beyond criticism. We suggest a minimum of 2 nights, but it is up to you.

kovalam

Kovalam is 20 mins from the Kerala capital, Thiruvananthapurum (Trivandrum), where there is an international airport. Kovalam is basically a fishing village, and every evening a flotilla of tiny fishing boats heads out to sea with their lanterns glimmering in the dark like fire-flies. The town is small, and is well known for its Ayurvedic centres, yoga classes and great beaches with clean waters and sands. It is everything that Goa was before the hordes arrived!

Formerly the Kovalam Hotel, this property has had extensive renovations, and is situated on top of a rocky headland, with wonderful views throughout. The grand entrance is very impressive in a wonderful tropical design. There are views out to the beach and to sea, as well as along the coast to the north. All our rooms have wonderful beach and coastal views and balconies. Beach view rooms are not big, but they are well appointed. There is a huge inﬁnity pool, and a great restaurant overlooking the coast. The new Clubrooms are excellent! All sea facing, all with balconies and with every mod con. Although not big, what they do lack in size they make up for in amenities, service and views! They come complete with butler service. High Tea is served in the private lounge-room each day, and there is a wonderful library/cigar bar. The Club guests have their own restaurant which is very chic, and where the food is outstanding. The property has a great inﬁnity pool for all guests, but the Club guests have a dedicated pool of their own, and it is a beautiful spot to while away the hours. An amazing Ayurvedic treatment centre is a highlight of a stay in this property.

This new resort is set high above the main beach. The property is bungalow style, and is set amongst Balinese inspired gardens (the landscape architect was from Bali). All rooms are in a tropical jungle-like environment. Sea view rooms with balcony, and the sea view rooms with private gardens are excellent. Large, roomy and well set up. Because they are in separate bungalows, there is a great sense of privacy, with only one neighbour either above or below you. The suites are excellent, and the largest of these has its own pool. The entire property is basically constructed of local bluestone, and it looks terriﬁc. There are 3 great restaurants – “Curries” is very good and features the local Kerala cuisine with lots of fresh seafood. There is a good Spa/wellness centre, and an impressive gym set up. Electric buggies take guests down to the beach where there are lounges set up, a bar and an outside barbeque restaurant.

BACKWATERS AND BEACHES TOUR 9 DAYS/8 NIGHTS This trip begins in Kochi, a great little town with an intriguing history. The area known as Fort Cochin has an extraordinary 18thC Portuguese and Dutch influence, and a 19th and 20thC British history. You will explore what is known as ‘Jewtown’, and visit the oldest Jewish Synagogue in India. After this fascinating stop, we will walk to the former Maharaja’s Palace, now known as the ‘Dutch Palace’. The building is in keeping with the architecture of Kerala, and presents a vastly different style to that of the palaces and forts of Rajasthan. After taking time here, we will view the famous Chinese fishing nets and then a final stop at St. Francis Church, where Vasco Da Gama was first interred. Next day, after buffet breakfast at the hotel, you will be driven to Vembanad Lake near Kumarakom (120 KMS/4 Hours). Here you will board your private charter kettuvallam (rice-barge). These 20m vessels are built in traditional style, but here the similarities end! They are luxuriously fitted out, with large cabins and ensuites. There is a dining area and lounge area from which you can watch the backwater villages seem to glide past. Meals on board are wonderful, and at night, the cabins are air-conditioned. A wonderful experience all round.

After the houseboat experience, you will be driven from Kumarakom to Kovalam (230 KMS/4.5 Hours). Once a ‘hippie hang-out’ in the 60’s, Kovalam is now a chic destination with some beautiful properties. The beaches are great, and so too are the hotels. Kovalam is a very small town, but there are interesting markets to explore and some excellent temples to visit. Or perhaps spend the day on any one of the 4 beautiful beaches. Beginning as a conglomeration of villages, Madras was officially started by the British in the 17th Century after a battle with the Dutch who had settled nearby. The culture of Chennai reflects the diverse population. It is a city famous for its music, dancing, theatre and temples! Chennai also boasts the second largest film industry in India, producing almost 200 feature films every year – the soundtracks of movies produced in Chennai echo across the city. There are believed to be 7.5 million inhabitants in this very busy, very hectic city, and evidence of Dutch, Portuguese and British influences are everywhere... Good hotels, however, are hard to find!

Situated in central Chennai, this property is close to the heart of the city. Although primarily focused on business travellers, it provides a rich fusion of Indian design and European class. It is an older property, but that is not quite so relevant in India where many hotels are 100’s of years old! Rooms are large and elegantly decorated, and there are some really lavish suites which we really recommend. A major refurbishment and renovation has been completed, and the results are outstanding. Service standards are truly brilliant, and help ensure a pleasant stay. Make sure that you try the Southern Spice Restaurant – fabulous food and service, and a perfect placeto watch people come and go.

The Connemara is Chennai’s only true heritage hotel. From the moment you enter the foyer you step in to India’s colonial past. Elegant décor and soft furnishings, the wonderful Verandah dining room beneath beautiful archways and superb service throughout the property are features you will not forget. The rooms are all spacious, with our favourite being the Heritage rooms which are very large and feature a fusion of beautiful Indian and British Raj décor. The outdoors Raintree restaurant is beautiful (take some mozzie repellent), and Hip Asia provides a very different experience and excellent Asian cuisine. In the evening, relax at the very modern Distil bar for a night-cap.

HEALTH The hotels that we have chosen for our program present a clean, hygienic and safe environment. They all provide bottled water in every room, and their kitchens are run to exacting European standards. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET A TUMMY UPSET IN INDIA. If you eat at our hotels and in the restaurants we suggest, you should remain ﬁt and healthy throughout your holiday. Of course we cannot guarantee this, but our own experience shows that it can be done time and time again.

TIPPING Tipping is actively discouraged in the hotels that we use. Instead, guests who have enjoyed their stay and appreciated the service they have received, are encouraged to leave an envelope with some cash at Reception upon check-out. If someone has given outstanding service, write their name on the envelope. At airports and railways, our staff can collect a few Rupees from you, and take care of porters for you. Our aim is to let you enjoy your holiday without the hassle and sometime embarrassment of working out when and how much to tip.

CLOTHING Generally, casual clothing is appropriate throughout India. Occasionally in very special restaurants or hotel dining rooms, ladies may prefer to wear a dress, and gents a jacket. When visiting mosques and temples, you will need to remove your shoes – easy ﬁtting slip-ons are the go, as you will undergo this particular ritual quite a lot! Ladies will need to cover their shoulders and legs upon entering some mosques and temples. A light sari or shawl can be a great asset. Throughout India, it is best to wear sturdy shoes on all explorations and excursions involving a bit of walking.

VISAS If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen you will need a Visa to visit India. Your Passport must have at least 6 months validity from your date of entry to India.
