ATHENS, named after Athena the goddess of wisdom, is built around the Acropolis and the rocky pinnacle of Mt. Lycabettus. Modern Athens has over four million inhabitants. The suburbs cover the barren plain in all directions and the city is packed with lively taverns and bustling shops. Dominating the Athenian landscape, the Acropolis is home to the fabulous Parthenon. Constructed between 447 and 437 BC the Parthenon is situated on the highest part of the Acropolis and reflects the values and the objectives of the Athenian State at that time. It was here that modern democracy was born. Quite literally, you too can sit and walk where Plato and Socrates once strolled. Many people make the mistake of by-passing Athens. You must allow plenty of time to explore everything that Athens has to offer. For the culture lover there are many wonderful museums, galleries and theatres.

In the evening, enjoy the spectacle of an orchestral concert or play in the spectacular and original Greek theatre of Herodes Atticus with its towering walls carved from the sides of the Acropolis. On this itinerary we first offer you a brief overview of the city of Athens. After picking you up at your hotel in your private vehicle, your guide will escort you throughout. The brief city overview includes stops at the first ‘modern’ Olympic stadium, and the wonderful Temple of Zeus. This part of the day will enable you to fully orientate yourself to Athens’ layout. After this, we’ll have coffee and Greek cakes at one of our favourite coffee shops before climbing the Acropolis to the magnificent Parthenon. Here, your private guide will introduce and explain this quite amazing place. You will be able to visit the Acropolis Museum, and finally spend time wandering through the ancient Agora (market place). A fantastic half day. At the end of the tour we will drop you either back at your hotel, or anywhere else in Athens that you would like to explore. An interesting drive of about 2 to 3 hours through rural Greece will take you to Delphi, a wondrous archaeological site hidden in a dramatic mountain setting. According to the ancient Greeks, Zeus sent out two eagles to fly across the world to meet at its centre, the “navel” of the world. To denote these points Omphalos stones (said to allow direct communication with the gods), were erected in several areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, the most famous being at the oracle in Delphi, the centre of the universe. In classical Greece, the pre-eminent oracle – the Sibyl (or Pythia) – presided here. She exerted considerable influence throughout Hellenic culture and the Greeks consulted her prior to all major decision-making. In the inner hearth of the Temple of Apollo, an eternal flame burned, and following the battle of Plataea, the Greek cities extinguished their fires and brought new fire from the hearth of Greece…. Delphi.
Argolis is a fascinating region of the Peloponnese peninsula. It takes its name from the once capital city of this area, Argos. The first stop is to view the Corinth Canal, built in 1893 to connect the Ionian and Aegean Seas. Before the construction of the canal, ancient mariners would drag their vessels across the narrow isthmus to save sailing time and avoid rough seas. From here we drive to Mycenae, city of Agamemnon, once a heavily fortified stronghold of this famous Bronze Age king. The Mycenaeans were fierce warriors, and much weaponry and armour was discovered in their graves. The most famous discovery, the Golden Mask of Agamemnon, may now be viewed in the National Museum in Athens.
Cape Sounion is located 69 km southeast of Athens at the tip of the Attica peninsula. The Temple of Poseidon, (God of the Sea), dominates the promontory and from its position atop sheer cliffs, offers magnificent views of the Aegean Sea and sunsets over the Saronic Gulf. In ancient times, mariners would see the brilliant white marble columns of the Temple of Poseidon and know they were close to home. “Sounion Hiron” (sanctuary of Sounion) was first mentioned in the Odyssey, as the place where Menelaos stopped during his return from Troy to bury his helmsman. More recently, Lord Byron, the English poet (and sometime graffiti artist!) carved his name onto one of the columns. Although sunset is the recommended time to be at Sounion, an early morning visit without the crowds is also a magical experience.
Perhaps the highlight of this region is Epidavros with the sanctuary of Asklepios, the most brilliant centre of healing in the ancient world. The magnificent theatre, still almost intact, stands in the hollow of a hill not far from the local Archaeological Museum.

During Summer, enjoy the Peacock Restaurant on the roof garden, where you can gaze at the Parthenon whilst sampling the modern Greek cuisine. Firstly, during the summer months (June to October), ferries, fast ferries and domestic flights operate fairly reliable regular services, whereas in the winter period, flights and ferries are quite limited. However, even during the summer it can be quite normal for ferries and flights to be disrupted by severe weather or local conditions. Some ferry journeys can be quite lengthy and tedious, calling in at several ports en route, and we suggest using the domestic flight networks where possible to access the islands. Certainly short inter-island ferries can be interesting, and the dramatic arrival by sea into Santorini is unforgettable. Santorini is an island of mesmerizing views and stunning, unforgettable sunsets. Believed by many to be the original site of Atlantis, this is truly one of the World’s most beautiful places. What is there to do on Santorini? If you are able to prise yourself away from the extraordinary views and idyllic location, try shopping in the narrow streets of Thira, swimming at the numerous beaches, wandering through the cliff-top village of Oia, or making a visit to the ancient archaeological site of Akrotiri. In the afternoon try sitting on your cliff top balcony overlooking the spectacular caldera, sipping ouzo and tasting fresh olives. This will easily become your daily routine as you wait to watch the glorious sunsets.
Getting there Fast ferries operate from Piraeus (Athens) to Santorini on a regular basis in the summer months, and the journey takes about 4-5 hours. Business class is available on most services and will provide a more relaxed and comfortable journey. Slower ferries can take up to 9-10 hours, calling at many islands en route. We suggest the 45 minute flight usually operated by a 40-60 seat aircraft and economy class only. Santorini may also be reached by ferry & fast ferry from Crete, Mykonos and other Cycladic Islands.
Transfers
There are very few taxis on the island, and during peak periods they can be very difficult to find. Let us arrange private transfers to and from your accommodation. Most hotels and villas do not have accurate street addresses and can be very difficult to find. Our transfer people will also advise the properties of your imminent arrival to ensure that porters are waiting at the cliff top to meet you and carry your luggage down the many steps to your accommodation.

Getting There
If one island encapsulates everyone’s expectations of a typical Greek island, then Mykonos fulfils this ideal. In the summer months there are the legendary parties in Mykonos town, and plenty of great recovery beaches for the day-after. But from dawn to dusk, Mykonos retains the charm of a small Greek Island town, but with a sophisticated array of restaurants and exquisite shopping. Along the waterfront, fishing boats rock at anchor, and each morning the fisherman clean and sell their catch at the open-air fish market. Our program features properties near or in this wonderful town as well as quieter beach properties away from the hustle and vibrancy of the town centre. Whilst on Mykonos, make sure you leave time to visit the nearby sacred island of Delos, birth place of Apollo, with its superb ruins and ancient theatre.
Fast ferries operate from Piraeus (Athens) to Mykonos on a regular basis in the summer months, and the journey takes about 3-4 hours. Business class is available on most services and will provide a more relaxed and comfortable journey. There are daily flights from Athens to Mykonos, a short trip of only 35 minutes. Above the beach at Agios Yiannis, made famous in the film Shirley Valentine, sits the Mykonos Grand. Self-drive
There is no better way to discover Crete than in your own vehicle. The main towns along the northern coast of Crete are linked by a freeway. Further South the roads are an adventure! There are many dirt roads, but in the main most roads are paved, though narrow. Thankfully traffic is minimal outside the main towns, and the views are magnificent. Picturesque villages, mountain peaks, spectacular views, ancient ruins, local markets, herds of goats, vineyards and olive groves and beautiful beaches all await your spirit of discovery.

ITHACA
The beautiful and calm Ithaca is one of the seven Ionian Islands. The interior of this unspoilt island is quite mountainous, covered with pine forests, cypresses, olive trees and vineyards, with a coastline of enchanting coves with sparkling blue waters. Northern Cyclades 7 nights/8 days
Our first port of call is Kusadasi in Turkey. This bustling town is the access point for the famous archaeological site of Ephesus. A short sail takes you to Samos where we visit Pythagoria, birth place of both Pythagoras and Aesop. The next stop is Patmos where St John the Divine lived near what is now the Monastery of the Apocalypse. There will also be time to visit the Monastery of St John which houses priceless icons and treasures. Next day we sail to Delos, birthplace of Apollo and now an extraordinary archaeological site of great importance. Only a kilometre away is Mykonos where we will overnight. This cosmopolitan island is a wonderful blend of traditional village and fun nightlife. The famous windmills sit above the town, and narrow streets of white-washed buildings lead down to the water front. Next day we sail to Sifnos. This remote but beautiful island is a far cry from Mykonos’ bustle, and the town of Apollonia provides a centre for arts and crafts. In 667 B.C. the colony of Byzantium was established at the tip of the Istanbul peninsula, where the Bosporus and the Golden Horn meet and flow into the Marmara Sea. The area where Ciragan Palace Kempinski now stands was known in the 17th century as Kazancioglu Garden, and since the 16th century, this stunning waterfront site has been occupied by several magnificent palaces. Les Ottomans is about 15 km from the centre of Istanbul. This is the property favoured by the World’s stars. From the haunting battlefields of Gallipoli to the worn marble streets of ancient Ephesus, this trip will take you on an emotional journey linking what many say is the birthplace of the Australian spirit with the birth place of the World’s most enduring cultures. You will walk along the landing beaches of Gallipoli, and explore the ruins of Troy before driving on to the hauntingly beautiful site of ancient Pergamum with its Altar of Zeus and Temple of Dionysus. Here in ancient times there was once an enormous library, a health centre and a centre for music therapy and meditation. Next day you will visit Ephesus, undoubtedly one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world. The Temple of Hadrian, Library of Celsus and Theatre are highlights not to be missed. Our next stop is Aphrodisias and the famous Temple of Aphrodite, ancient Stadium and the Baths of Hadrian. Later today we reach Pamukkale and its famous cascading mineral-salt pools which have formed glistening white terraces on the hillside. Next day we head to Marmaris via Priene, Miletus and Didyma’s impressive Temple of Apollo. The trip ends after breakfast the next day when you may continue onward, or return to Istanbul.

If you have time, this is a wonderful two days to add to the itinerary, and includes the Dalyan River where Lycian tombs are hewn in to the rock faces, and the beaches provide a nesting ground for the rare carretta-carretta turtle. Late afternoon arrive in the stunning seaside town of Kas. Next day we drive along the coast road beside the Gulf of Antalya, stopping at the home of St Nicholas, and Phaselis where Alexander the Great used to spend his winters.

Ephesus, Cappadocia and Gallipoli Tour 13 days/12 nights
This wonderful itinerary explores Western Turkey, and can start or finish in Istanbul. You will explore the beautiful Turkish coastline, from Marmaris to Kusadasi, en-route visiting beautiful Dalyan River, Bodrum and the wonderful ruins at Priene, Miletus and Didyma. After leaving the coast, head inland with a tour of Ephesus, one of the best preserved Roman cities; then on to Pamukkale with its extraordinary limestone cascades, and natural healing waters. The visit to Aphrodisias is not only memorable for the beautiful Temple of Aphrodite, and the impressive stadium, but the actual location of the site is in such a peaceful setting, hidden in an area surrounded by acres and acres of tobacco fields. The old town of Antalya will delight you with its narrow streets and views of the Roman harbour, and close by is the remarkably intact Roman Amphitheatre at Aspendos, and the City of Perge, visited by St Paul in 46 A.D. Heading inland through the vast agricultural plains of Turkey, our journey takes us to Konya, home of the Whirling Dervishes. Further inland we will discover the magical natural rock formations of Cappadocia known as the Fairy Chimneys. Another surprising feature of this unique
area are the underground cities, once the secret home of 20,000 inhabitants. There are over 40 subterranean settlements in the area, often 60 metres underground - not for the claustrophobic! We recommend an optional hot air balloon ride at dawn over this enchanting landscape. Next we drive to Ankara, the Turkish capital, stopping en route to visit the 13thC Seljuk caravansary of Agzikarahan. A long drive takes us to the ancient capital of Gordion, city of King Midas, whose touch turned all to gold. Later we continue on to Bursa, to visit the Green Ottoman Complex and the Grand Mosque. We end our journey with a visit to the ancient city of Troy, and then overnight in Canakkale. Next morning you will visit the World War I battle sites at Gallipoli, before driving along the shores of the Sea of Marmara to Istanbul.

Greeks, Romans and Ottomans Tour 14 days/13 nights
An enchanting journey following the footsteps of the ancient Greeks, the worn marble streets of the Romans, and the camel routes of the Ottomans. Leave Istanbul and travel along the shores of the Sea of Marmara to visit Gallipoli. Later, we cross the Dardanelles by car ferry and visit ancient Troy, followed by the Doric Temple of Athena at Assos. The beautiful site of Pergamum will remain forever in your memory, with its ancient health centre, the Altar of Zeus, the Temple of Dionysus and the site of the 200,000 volume library. A highlight of your tour will be the visit to Ephesus, one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world with its Temple of Hadrian, Theatre and Odeon. Close by is reputed to be the House of the Virgin Mary. Then it’s on to Pamukkale where the thermal water cascades into pools forming the famous white terraces. The visit to Aphrodisias is not only memorable for the beautiful Temple of Aphrodite, and the impressive stadium, 34
but for the location of the site which is hidden in an area surrounded by acres of tobacco fields. We then drive East to Priene, dating back to the 10thC BC., and the vast site of Miletus. Next we visit Didyma, and the Temple of Apollo built around 600 BC. The drive to Dalyan is spectacular, with its Lycian tombs overlooking the lush river delta leading to Iztuzu Beach. Here is the nesting-ground for the carrettacarretta turtles. Later pass by picturesque Koycegiz Lake en route to Fethiye, centre of ancient Lycia, where tombs are cut into the surrounding hillsides. The drive along the Gulf of Antalya is beautiful. You will stop at Kale, home of St. Nicholas, and then mysterious Olympos to climb to the hilltop of the “eternal fires”. In the afternoon visit Phaselis, the favourite winter resort of Alexander the Great. A 2 day break in Antalya gives the opportunity to visit the theatre at Aspendos with its outstanding natural acoustics, and the intriguing Roman city of Perge, visited by St Paul in 46 A.D. Quite a long but interesting drive through ever-changing rural scenery takes us to Konya, home of the mystic poet Mevlana, founder of the Whirling Dervish sect. We
continue on to Cappadocia to visit to one of the fascinating underground cities, once the secret home of 20,000 inhabitants. After lunch visit the spectacular fairy chimneys valley, with its unique rock formations. There is another whole day to explore this amazing region. Maybe visit the market town of Avanos, or even relax in the sun at your hotel. Drive to Ankara, stopping en route to visit the 13thC Seljuk caravansary of Agzikarahan. On arrival at Ankara enjoy a tour of the Turkish capital visiting Ankara Castle, the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, and Ataturk’s Mausoleum. Your tour ends with a flight from Ankara to Istanbul. When in Cappadocia, do as the Cappadocians do! Live in a cave. Well, not quite. This amazing resort style complex is hewn in to the hillside beneath a rock outcrop. There are wonderful views out over the Cappadocia landscape. Suites are private, and have sunken baths, separate lounge areas, king-size beds and up to date and modern accessories and fittings. The resort has 2 heated pools – one outdoors and one indoors, as well as 2 Hammams (Turkish Baths), Jacuzzi and massage therapy rooms, restaurants and a fitness centre. Good quality accommodation is difficult to find in Cappadocia, but this is excellent. Perfect for families as well as couples.
The Anatolian Houses are quite literally carved in to the rock, and are set within five attached cave formations. Each room has got its own characteristic with different themes and eras from history. There are 11 Suites and 8 Deluxe Suites, each with its own distinctive collection of works of art, old and modern. Furniture has been specially selected among pieces from different eras in history. We strongly recommend that you consider the Deluxe Suites, as they are larger and more comfortable than the others. The setting of the hotel is spectacular, and is amidst the famed rock formations of Cappadocia. Though rustic by its very nature and construction, the property is extremely comfortable, and features heated swimming pools, spa facilities, sauna and all the other amenities one would expect. Please note that our gulets are of the highest standard. They are luxurious, and are superbly finished. They should not be confused with the more ‘rustic’ gulets found in other programs.
Gulets are gracious and elegant motor sailers, built of iroko (white mahogany) or mahogany and styled with pointed fore and rounded aft. The foredecks offer large uncluttered sun bathing areas equipped with sun mattresses, and the expansive aft decks have become a famous feature of the Turkish gulets. Protected by a sun awning, the aft deck has a wide cushioned area for lounging and a table with chairs perfect for “al fresco” dining. The indoor saloons provide a cosy atmosphere and typically have a small bar, library and sound system.

Light and airy below decks, each cabin has a double bed or twin berths and some have an upper single bunk. All cabins have opening port holes, and many gulets now have ducted

Each gulet has an experienced and knowledgeable captain, a chef and a deck hand who will host you and look after the boat. They are prepared to assist and pamper you in every way, from suggesting suitable anchorages and arranging shore excursions to serving you cocktails and three delicious meals a day. The crew have their own separate quarters. A typical restful day might be spent reading a book and sun bathing whilst sipping a cool drink on deck, whereas a more active day may include windsurfing, fishing or, when the yacht is at anchor in a beautiful cove, hiking in the woods or swimming and snorkelling amid schools of fish and ancient underwater ruins. While docked you may wish to spend the morning touring a nearby ancient city or have a special shore evening in a Turkish village. You can just let yourself drift along from day to day allowing your gulet to take the strain and enjoy the cruise in complete relaxation.
