Triticale 718 Sharp Brothers Seed Company has produced and marketed 718, a triticale variety from Syngenta/Agripro since the 2013 fall planting season, giving us the opportunity to observe this variety over a wide range of growing conditions. Conditions in the spring of 2014 were very unfavorable; with drought and the onset of early heat. 718 withstood these stresses and remained very productive. Spring of 2015 saw mild temperatures and better than average rainfall. Yields in 2015 were outstanding with reports of over 20 ton per acre silage yields on irrigated fields in southwest Kansas. Stress tolerance combined with high yield potential, a great combination for Plains triticale producers. Tall, dense growth characteristics combine to produce outstanding forage yields. Reports of over 20 ton silage per acre.

Very good standability, even at 5 1/2’ tall Very good winterhardiness Awnletted variety, well adapted to late season grazing, haying or silage production without causing injury to the mouths of animals.

Triticale 718 Competitor 718 triticale is a facultative winter or spring growth habit variety as are nearly all triticale and many barley varieties used for forage production. Facultative varieties do not require periods of specific cool temperature exposure (vernalization) in order to initiate stem elongation, commonly referred to as jointing. In comparison, most winter wheat varieties must be exposed to vernalizing temperatures before jointing will be initiated. Producers should monitor facultative triticale for heavy vegetative growth in the fall which may lead to premature stem elongation. Heavy growth should be grazed to suppress stem elongation during the fall months. Suppression of stem elongation during fall growth will significantly decrease the likelihood of winter kill/winter injury with any cool season cereal grain, including triticale. It has been our observation that 718 triticale is less prone to autumn stem elongation than are other facultative varieties. Nonetheless it should be monitored and managed to assure the best opportunity for successful production.
