Setting the stage for innovation

WHITE HEAT is a Post Graduate Masters project by the students of Manchester School

of Architecture. The project studies the potential of former UMIST campus in Manchester to ideate strategies for a proposal envisioning the future utilisation of the space as an innovation district called ID Manchester. The site bridges the gap between the developing Manchester Oxford Road Corridor and the new proposed HS2 station at the Manchester Piccadilly Station. It links the economic investment possibilities and the technological innovation through its central location. This proposal celebrates the significant heritage of the site as a basis for its sustainable development.

Thapar University Learning Laboratory Place: Patiala, India Architects: Designplus Associates Services, Mccullough Mulvin Architects Area: 30,809 m² Year: 2019 The Learning Laboratory is a new type of meeting space, an engine for education, a city for students, a destination for conversation; it mediates timeless form and offers complex spatial adventures. The building comprises a library, lecture theatres and a science faculty, each in a tall red Agra stone volume, with white marble detail, the facades mediated using louvred stone screens like traditional Jaali screens.

IIM-B New Classroom Complex Place: Bengaluru, India Architects: Mindspace Area: 6,500 m² Year: 2014 The aim was to contribute The classroom block is proposed above an existing building along the main movement axis of the campus. The primary design intent of the classroom block was to strike a chord with the existing campus. The existing columns were strengthened and some new columns were added along the periphery of the proposed building without obstructing the existing building.

Innovation Center UC, Anacleto Angelini Place: Santiago, Chile. Architects: Alejandro Aravena | ELEMENTAL Area: 8,176 m² Year: 2014 Design a building in which at least 4 forms of work could be verified: a matrix of formal and informal work crossed by individual and collective ways of encountering people. In addition to that, we thought that face to face contact is unbeatable when one wants to create knowledge, so we multiplied throughout the building the places where people could meet: from the elevator’s lobby with a bench where to sit if you happen to run into somebody that has interesting information to share, to a transparent atrium vertically, where you can sneak into what others are doing while circulating verticall

Ryerson University Daphne Cockwell Health Sciences Complex Place: Toronto, Canada Architects: Perkins&Will Area: 289,000 ft² Year: 2019 Located steps from the busiest intersection in Canada, Ryerson University occupies one of the densest and fastest growing neighbourhoods in Toronto. Over the last decade, the University’s enrollment has increased by almost 50%, and with the introduction of a variety of innovative new courses and programs, campus facilities are under tremendous pressure. However, at the same time, explosive development on surrounding sites has constrained the University’s opportunities to expand.

3.1 Site Plan

The innovation district is a place to maximise the city’s potential of creating a positive change. The innovation labs and work spaces are modelled to inspire innovators to focus their creations for the positive growth of humans and nature alike. It will engage its progressive ability with new technology and connect with the revived biodiversity in its natural realms. The enhanced visual and physical connectivity will create a stimulating environment in which innovators can meet and work. As urban spaces are in a state of constant flux, the innovation district provides adaptability for the needs of the future. In the times of virtual and augmented reality, the innovation district connects the city to its authentic heritage and ecology by weaving the past, present and the future.

3.2 Site View The existing UMIST campus has 2 characteristic elements – the recognisability of the skyline and the quality of its spaces that is the open courts bounded by the structures. The strategy is to introduce courts with diagonal connectivity. It was further decided to maintain the existing heights and not to exceed to keep the site authenticity and maintain the street views with the street scape. Ground level looks at reopening of River Medlock which executes the strategy of reviving the ecology. The courts quality has been enhanced by re-introducing vanish natural elements.

3.3 Route Connections

1 - Skywalk Route The upper route allows to connect buildings and green areas, highlighting views of the city and connection between the different activities. Let’s you travel from Piccadilly Station to Sackville Street and Mancunian Way.

3 - University Route This drawing shows the route of students and university staff from the South Campus of UoM to ID Manchester. They enter from the southwest corner of the site and arrive at the railway station from the northeast corner through the circular overpass. This line contains their possible activities and places of arrival.

4 - Arches Route This route takes the elevated railway as the main body and launches several lines from the railway. The north side of the railway mainly includes Sackville Street building and garden, and the south side has innovation center, hotel, business center, etc.

4.1 Elevated Connection

WHITE HEAT - Envisioning the future of UMIST

It is a new gateway connecting the innovation district to Piccadilly Station and the HS2. Through the bridge’s golden glass you will be able to glimpse the innovative potential and investment value of this place. Visitors, consumers, students and businessmen will be able to reach the innovation district from this simple and efficient bridge, or they can choose to stroll on the roof of the bridge to enjoy the unique view of the old and new buildings. The new luxury hotel can also be easily reached via the bridge.

4.2 Luxury Hotel

Investors from all over are expected to enter the site which demands for a 5-star hotel for their stay. The hotel location connects the Piccadilly station through the elevated connection. The hotel also encloses the iconic Hollaway Wall while using it as a partition between the main lobby and a cafè. The hotel acts to transform the site from an institutional space into an innovation district.

4.3 Jacksons Mill

The Jackson’s Mill is the oldest buildings on the site and is therefore important to preserve and adapt. So to prolong its lifespan the ground floor has been opened for free movement and to serve as reception. The top 3 floors function as public hall for business seminars, exhibitions and public activities.

4.4 River Court

The uncovering of the bed of the River Medlock on the site is a major aspect of the intervention. The ecosystem of the site is intended to attract and encourage diversity with informal social spaces. The meandering river enhances the active and organic ground frontage weaving major buildings on the site and making them approachable and welcoming. The sound of the river provides a soothing and positive environment for wellbeing.

The Wright Robinson building is used as the framework for the new innovation labs, creating work spaces and places of connections across the innovation district. The set of staircases flow from the public space into the building and act as transition between the private and the public functions.

The centre of the site is used to create a focus for the different buildings and functions with a water scape following the old course of the river bed and sky corridors oversailed by the sky bridges.

4.7 Viaduct Linear Park

The linear park connects Renold building, Renold court, innovation centre, hotel and viaduct.This street also overlooks into the Medlock river . The new green spaces will encourage social activities along the northern edge of the site with newly introduced activities below the viaduct arches. The activities planned under the arches include a cafe, a gym and cycle parking while the existing workshops are retained.

4.8 Vimto Park

The Vimto park is enhanced to create a northern green space between the Sackville building and the viaduct with new seating and landscape connection with Altrincham Street and the linear park. A viaduct arch acts as an entrance to the Vimto park from the linear park side.

4.9 Elevated Connection

The roof gardens between Renold, Pariser, and James Lighthill builgings facilitate outdoor activities. Three roofs are connected through a bridge that let visitors reach the destination conveniently, allowing visitors to visit this area via roof level. The elevated sitaution of the bridges provide an open but private vantage point for discussions, relaxation and view points across the site and the wider city.

4.10 Plaza Showroom

The ID Plaza showroom projects the University’s innovation activities. The Plaza is structured with a void , which highlights the facades of the Renold and Pariser buildings, allows distance and gives space to the river and its vegetation. An interactive wall screen brings dynamism and variability to the activities of the plaza and the wider innovation district.

4.11 Workspaces

The retrofitting of existing buildings ensures the maintenance of the existing vertical density (with respect to multi story buildings like Renolds, Pariser, Faraday, Ferranti and MSS tower). The workspace zones have outdoor overhanging and terrace style open spaces for planting and social uses on every floor. The external green balconies wrap the existing concrete frames to enhance and increase activities within the towers.

4.12 Entrance Boulevard

To overcome the present lack of proper visual and pedestrian connections, the entrance boulevard and pavillion creates pedestrian friendly zones as an active ground floor frontage increases the connectivity and porosity to the Oxford Road Corridor and the innovation district. The introduction of the entrance plaza within the Pariser building complex along with converting the present Sackville street into a pedestrian boulevard is an attempt of creating a grand pedestrian entrance for people approaching the site from the Mancunian Way junction and the Sackville Street.
