Circle Cee Charolais was honored with the Alberta Charolais Association 50 Year Award Circle Cee Charolais was Established in 1971 in Lamont, AB

The Cholak family, near Lamont, Alberta first gained interest in the Charolais breed in the 1960’s as a result of horse trade – an bred American Saddlebred mare for a ½ blood Charolais recorded heifer calf. Charolais Pioneer and entrepreneur Alex, wife Helen and son Frank and wife Elly, began to AI the rest of their herd to Charolais bulls and sought after Percentage Purebred and Full French females to begin the start of Circle Cee Charolais in 1971. Over the next few years, the family invested in top genetics from several early Pioneers in the Charolais breed including Roy Bensch (Rainbow Charolais), the Rairdan Family (EXL Charolais), the Pochylko family (Sandan Charolais), the Bullick family (Prairie Cove Charolais) as well as several others. Alex was not scared to spend money for the good ones and the name of Circle Cee began to become a noted operation in the Charolais breed. The Circle Cee herd was never a large purebred herd as Alex was a County Counselor for many years, Helen worked at a son’s restaurant in Lamont, Elly worked for Sheritt, leaving Frank to manage the day to day operations of the farm. The herd was never larger than 75 breeding females and focus on Quality instead of Quantity. They continued to AI to popular bulls and compete at local shows, Farmfair and sold a few select bulls in the Edmonton Spring Bull Sale. The focus of the herd remained the commercial cattleman and due to its reputation and highly visible location on Highway 15, has never had a bull sale and has sold bulls privately over the years. In 1992, a group of 4 individuals, Tim Bullick, Gord Rattray, Clinton Phillips and Frank got to chatting about enhancing the Youth Leadership conferences as they all had kids actively showing cattle and in 1993 in Camrose the modern CCYA had its first conference. We owe a lot to these 4 men for having the foresight and putting the effort into making the Conference a tremendous success and the start of what it was today. As Stephen and Carrie grew older and were able to take on more responsibility on the farm, Frank joined the ACA Board as a Director in 1994. He became President in 1997 and remained in that position until 2000. Frank was instrumental in moving the National Show out of Regina for the first time ever in 1998 and held the event at FarmFair. The Board then put on a spectacular show to kick off the new millennium at FarmFair they called “CHAR 2000”. Events such as ‘White Excitement’ at West Edmonton Mall, MooLaMania and Sirvivor at FarmFair were all the work of the ACA Board at that time. Frank then went off the Board for a few years only to return and be on the organizing committee for the World Congress which was held in 2008 in Edmonton during Farmfair. This was an amazing event, that showcased Alberta to the World. Elly managed to get to a few events over the years but seemed to consistently draw the short end of the stick and kept the farm going while the rest of the family was off at shows or sales. There were deals to be had during a few blizzards and Elly was alone at the farm…if the right person had came along with a stock trailer! Fortunately no one ever pulled in… Stephen was the CCYA President in 1996 when the Conference was held in Vermilion and Carrie was the CCYA President when the event was held in Stettler in 2000. Both kids were active in the breed and met a lot of life long friends at various shows across Alberta and Canada. After University, Stephen worked off the farm but still played an active role in the Charolais breed. Carrie ventured a little further away working with FCC and later JGL in financing roles. Stephen married Debbie in 2008 and introduced her to the Charolais breed. Both have been active in the breed for the past several years, with Debbie taking on a Secretary/ Event Coordination Role with the ACA since 2015. She was awarded the Booster of the Year Award from the ACA in 2018 for going above and beyond in promoting the Charolais breed. Stephen has been the longest serving President of the ACA from 2016 – 2023, stepping down this afternoon. Circle Cee Charolais was honored to be the ACA Breeder of the Year in 1991 and Alex & Helen were honored as ACA Pioneers in 2006. Alex was placed on the CCA Honor Roll in 2007 for outstanding contributions to the Charolais breed. The family continues with a modest herd of 40 cows and is proud to have helped start several junior’s herds with quality females. The motto “Quality Charolais – Today’s Way” remains intact today and still rings true.
