“Serving our communities to make them better places to live.”

cmcdougall@shawmedia.com It’s been a long and bumpy road to women’s equality. Some might argue there’s still a long way to go. This Women’s History Month, the Northwest Herald wants to celebrate the women and organizations who have paved the way to make that road a little smoother, trailblazers who continue to show women and girls that anything is possible.

A pioneer for women’s suffrage When one thinks of the women’s suffrage movement in Illinois, several female figures likely pop into mind — Jane Addams or, for the historically inclined, Grace Wilbur Trout or Ida B. Wells-Barnett. What about Elizabeth Shurtleff? Who? Elizabeth Shurtleff of Marengo was once an active Illinois suffragist. Her husband, Judge Edward D. Shurtleff, a rising political star, was elected to the Illinois General Assembly and later became Speaker of the House. Elizabeth Shurtleff’s influence on her husband’s views is well-documented. The couple often invited state suffrage leaders to speak to women’s groups at their home. It was Elizabeth who persuaded her husband to support the growing women’s suffrage movement — despite his sympathies with the Anti-Saloon League, who believed strongly that use and sale of alcohol should be contained if not eliminated, and a group known for its opposition to women’s suffrage. Edward Shurtleff later championed a bill that would make Illinois the first state east of the Mississippi River to grant women the right to vote in presidential elections. Illinois also was one of the first states to ratify the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Wilbur Trout once said that she was “especially

Laurie Dayon, executive director of Girls on the Run Northwest Illinois, sits for a portrait. Girls on the Run helps promote a positive body image for girls in a 10-week program that ends with a 5K race. grateful when we had secured the vote of Edward D. Shurtleff because he was always before opposed to suffrage.” Although it’s her husband whose name is prominent in Illinois history — for both good and bad — it’s Elizabeth who, in the annals of the McHenry County Historical Society, was called “one of Marengo’s best-known women.”

Shaping McHenry County’s Youth Longtime educator May Chesak may be gone, but her legacy to education lives on today. Chesak was the kind of teacher students remembered and colleagues admired — so much so that Huntley elementary school students walk the halls of a school named after her. She wanted to be a teacher from the time she was 4 years old playing with her dog, she told the Northwest Herald in a 1999 interview. “I tried to make my dog a student.” Chesak spent 51 years teaching local children, starting in a one-room schoolhouse in Fox River Grove, then on to Huntley, finally retiring in 1974 as school principal in Greenwood. But she was slow to

leave education. After she packed up her classroom, she remained active with the Retired Teachers Association and continued to substitute teach. Her love for children and her community extended well beyond the classroom. She was part of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Lions Club and Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers’ honors society. She died in 2007 at 103 years old, but left a profound legacy for generations of former students by which to remember her.

On track for a brighter tomorrow Laurie Dayon never thought she could run a marathon. She never thought she could run a nonprofit organization either. But if there’s one lesson from her leading the local Girls on the Run, it’s that anything is possible. Girls on the Run empowers girls in third through eighth grade through activities designed to help them make good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The organization’s mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun,

experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. “It gives the girls the tools to stand up for themselves and be better-rounded women as they grow up,” Dayon said. The program is designed to help girls identify who they are and “empower them to face everything they’re confronted with,” Girls on the Run program coordinator Lisa Puma said. The culmination of the 10week program is a 5K race. It doesn’t matter if the girls run or walk it — as long as they cross the finish line. “The idea is when you meet that goal, it gives you the foundation for the next challenge in your life,” Dayon said. New to Girls on the Run this year is what Dayon called the “GO Team,” which stands for Girls who are Older. These women share their stories about who inspired them when they were young — but perhaps more importantly, who discouraged them and were proved wrong. “We have to always remember what’s happened in the past so girls realize it’s very important to be where we are right now,” Puma said. “People fought very hard so women can have a voice.”

HUNTLEY — A Huntley resident who helped rally communitywide support for the victims of the Woodcreek Apartment fire last month now has found herself needing similar support. Penny Andersen, whose simple Facebook message last month about the fire victims snowballed into donations of food, furniture and money from people across the area, recently discovered that the bladder cancer that briefly put her on life support last year had returned. Her husband, Steinar Andersen, is asking for monetary donations to help the family raise $10,000 to help with medical costs and other living expenses during Penny Andersen’s treatment for the stage one cancer. “I’m just looking for something to help us survive without having to lose everything,” Steinar Andersen said. “But the thing is making sure my wife is cared for.” The Andersens’ budget has been running tight ever since Steinar Andersen was laid off six months ago. The couple also is the full-time caregiver for their developmentally disabled son, who was born premature, Steinar Andersen said. Doctors found a tumor on the inside of her bladder during a cystoscopy March 13. She was hospitalized at Sherman Hospital in Elgin until Tuesday and now will begin treatment to remove the cancer, Steinar Andersen said. So far, the family has raised $6,605 primarily from family and friends, with the goal to reach $10,000 by the end of March. The Para Family Foundation in Lisle will be matching each dollar donated until the month’s end.

Bill Hauck and his grandson, George Moody, examine the antique hand pumper displayed at the Northern Illinois Fire Museum Chili Cook-Off at Donley’s Wild West Town banquet hall in Union. The event was held to raise money for the museum and the Marengo department.

Life-changing chili served at cook-off By CYNTHIA WOLF editorial@nwherald.com UNION — “This may change your life,” Ben Campbell boasted as he scooped some chili into a Styrofoam cup and handed it off for sampling. Campbell, a firefighter and paramedic for Marengo Fire and Rescue, was touting the red shift’s entry in the inaugural Northern Illinois Fire Museum Chili Cook-Off on Sunday at Donley’s Wild West Town banquet hall in Union. The secret to the team’s flavorful recipe is cilantro, Campbell said. The red shift’s chili was among seven available at the event, held to raise money for the museum and the Marengo department. Other competitors included the Union and Pingree Grove fire protection districts (a combined entry), Marengo Fire and Rescue’s black shift, Marengo’s gold shift, Cary Fire Protection District and two restaurants — Joe’s Place and Coleman’s. Event-goers paid $5 to get

in, which included sampling. Full bowls of chili were $2. Everyone received a ticket stub with which to cast their votes. On the stage, the Sinful Saints Dixieland Band played midday. Raffles and door prizes also were available. A few hours into the event, former Chicago Bear Keith Van Horne signed autographs. It mattered not to Tanner and Trevor Carlson of Algonquin and their friend Andrew Proper that Van Horne played long before they were born. They fidgeted excitedly with the new Wilson footballs they brought for signing. “He was a Bear, for the Super Bowl,” said Trevor Carlson, 13. Tanner and Andrew, both 9, play in Pop Warner football, and were eager to meet the retired pro from the storied 1985 Bears Super Bowl champion team. Behind the table where Van Horne sat was an example of equipment the Northern Illinois Fire Museum will showcase when its leaders’ dream of a permanent muse-

um are realized, said Roger Dreher, museum president. The apparatus, an 1856 Hunneman, was a horse- or hand-drawn vehicle from which water was hand pumped. Once owned by the Harvard Fire Protection District, Harvard sent it to Chicago during the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. The Northern Illinois Fire Museum leases space at Meyer Material on Route 23 south of Marengo. “We need a real home,” Dreher said. “We have about 20 trucks in there, but we don’t have any room for displays like in a real museum.” Mari Bicouvaris of Woodstock attended the chili cookoff with her 2-year-old son, Nickolaus, and Marengo firefighter Patrick Fanning. She said she hopes the museum’s fundraising is successful. “I think it’s important for people to know the history of where fire departments have come from, and about fire safety,” she said. “Having a museum raises awareness … and what little kid doesn’t like fire trucks?”

Algonquin library has new museum pass ALGONQUIN — The Algonquin Area Public Library District has a new Museum Adventure Pass. From museums that supply learners with history and culture to charming gardens — all of these and more are accessible with the new Museum Adventure Pass. Patrons may use their Algonquin Area Public Library card to receive a Museum Adventure Pass at the Youth Services Desk in the library. With the pass, patrons will receive free admission or a discount, depending on location, to Chicago-area museums. The Algonquin Area Public Library District has a limited number of passes for each participating organization, and each is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Passes cannot be reserved or put on hold. One Museum Adventure Pass may be checked out per family, per loan period. Each loan period is seven days. Passes are not transferable. Museums may ask for identification when using the pass, and the pass will be collected during the visit.
