End of an era Don DeWitte reflects on 20 years in St. Charles government If you go

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – During his 20 years on the St. Charles City Council, Mayor Don DeWitte said he tried to follow advice from late Alderman Walter Foulkes: If you have a position and maintain it, nobody can or should fault you for it. “I hope no one would have questioned my position on any given issue,” DeWitte said. DeWitte, 59, officially will end his tenure in city government May 6, when those elected April 9 take over. DeWitte’s tenure included the completion of the first two phases of the First Street redevelopment project; the reconstruction of Fire Station No. 1; and the construction of Red Gate Bridge, the largest public works infrastructure initiative in the city’s history. But he also took heat from residents, particularly after January’s vote on the Lexington Club housing development and how he adjourned that meeting before a resident could talk. Former Mayor Fred Norris, who also served on the council with DeWitte’s father, said DeWitte has done an outstanding job. “He had the heart of the community built right into him,” Norris said. “It’s been a real pleasure to watch his successes as mayor.” DeWitte was elected as 3rd Ward alderman in 1993. The city was on the verge of a significant growth spurt, and downtown was struggling, he said. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, St. Charles experienced a lot of development, especially on the west side. Under Mayor Sue Klinkhamer’s administration, he said, downtown spaces began filling up, bringing the area back to life. “I like to think our administration picked up from that,” DeWitte said. City Administrator Brian Townsend said DeWitte set a fiscally conservative tone at City Hall. He said the mayor wanted expenses scrutinized, efficient processes and procedures, and the tax burden re-

DeWitte isn’t afraid to speak his mind, Townsend said. “He wants to do what he believes is best for the city,” Townsend said. “The results of his leadership speak for themselves.” Other accomplishments during DeWitte’s eight-year tenure as mayor included the public works facility on Seventh Avenue; the fire department’s administrative headquarters in the Century Station building; the Municipal Center’s river wall and Norris family public plaza reconstruction projects; and the radium removal facility on Riverside Drive. “He accomplished the one [project] I couldn’t accomplish,” said Norris, referring to Red Gate Bridge. DeWitte said he is most proud of the city’s sound finances and ability to move forward on such aforementioned projects while weathering the Great Recession. “I can’t think of anything I would have done differently,” DeWitte said. Despite what his longstand-

ing critics may say, he said, he never had an ulterior motive as mayor. Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Martin concurred. “He never pulled any backward stunts that some mayors would do,” Martin said. “He never strong-armed anybody. He’s led the council through some very interesting times. He has a good grasp of how to be mayor, and he’s done a good job.” Resident Gene Kalley, however, has been critical of the city’s finances, particularly of its use of tax increment financing funds. He voiced his concerns at public meetings but said it felt like his comments fell on deaf ears. “He wasn’t receptive to public comment,” Kalley said of the mayor. “He showed it when he voted Lexington Club in.” Many residents publicly opposed Lexington Club, a housing development planned for the city’s west side. They criticized the 6-5 vote taken in January and the few days’ notice that a vote would be taken. DeWitte said he always felt a residential development was appropriate for the former Applied Composites site. Further,

a lower density project wasn’t economically viable, and traffic concerns were unfounded at best and emotionally driven at worst. He said the developer asked that a vote be taken – a sign that the developer was done negotiating. “A lot of people believe we have the ability to mold or sculpt any project in the form they or the City Council see fit,” DeWitte said. He wishes the City Council had supported ShoDeen’s mixed-use proposal for the former St. Charles Mall site along Route 38 near Randall Road. He said opponents coerced some to see the issue their way. Several years later, he said, “the site remains a rotting parking lot with two shuttered restaurants and a strip mall across the street that could have very well been a Whole Foods supermarket.” Although DeWitte said he has enjoyed being mayor – a role that sometimes required as little as five to 10 hours a week and other times required as much as 20 to 30 hours a week – he doesn’t expect he will miss it. “I think a change of personalities can always be constructive,” he said. The next mayor, he said, should be a businessman – someone who can deal with financial issues and has the ability to negotiate with numerous and varied input. As developers submit proposals, he said, maintaining a balance between neighborhood rights and the community’s greater good will become even more important. On April 9, voters will decide whether John Rabchuk, Jotham Stein, Jake Wyatt or Ray Rogina is best suited for the job.

Proposal designates $7.6 million surplus toward future needs By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In the past, when Kane County’s government had money left over, the typical response was to put it into a savings account to pay for unexpected expenses. This year, however, county officials appear poised to set aside money to make sure the county can deal with a different kind of issue: an unanticipated cut to money coming into county coffers from Springfield and elsewhere. Later this month, the County Board will consider a measure, suggested by the county’s Finance Department and backed by County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, to direct a surplus of about $7.6 million in the county’s general operating fund from spending on county programs to shoring up areas of expected need. “We have a headwind building up,” Lauzen said. “The sooner we plan for things, the better we’ll be.” Lauzen said he has been particularly rattled in recent days by proposals in Springfield to trim the income tax revenue the state shares with local governments. Should a proposal intro-

duced by Gov. Pat Quinn become law, it could produce a budget hole in Kane County of at least $2 million, Lauzen said. Applying some of the money from this year’s budget to future years would allow the county to be better prepared for such a hit. Lauzen also called on the board to dedicate $1.4 million toward the county’s public employee pension obligations, $1.8 million for an arbitration award for workers at the county jail and $4.4 million for infrastructure projects. While the money has not been designated to specific infrastructure projects, the county has been asked in recent months for significant funding to improve operations at county court buildings. But Lauzen and others said the county should begin preparing now for future demands. “For us, this is a first-time concept, to allocate money into future fiscal years,” said County Board member John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, and chairman of the county’s Finance Committee. The Finance Committee endorsed the proposal, which is scheduled to be considered by the County Board Executive Committee on Wednesday.

City looks to promote lot Committee OKs By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A newly developed public parking lot on James Street is not getting enough use, so Geneva aldermen, acting as the Committee of the Whole at a special meeting Monday, asked staff to bring the issue forward at next week’s meeting. Michael Simon, owner of The Little Traveler, 404 S. Third St., showed the aldermen photos of the empty lot. “People don’t know the lot exists,” Simon said. Simon said the lot’s park-

ing spaces were assigned three-hour limits. If they were nine-hour parking spots, “this lot can be filled almost overnight” and it would serve its intended purpose to get cars off the street – with employees of the downtown’s businesses. The city designates shorter parking for shoppers and all-day parking for commuters and downtown employees. That public parking lot was planned 15 years ago while Simon served on the city’s former parking committee. City Administrator

Mary McKittrick said the council had given her permission to buy the property for a public lot once the owner died. Construction was completed only four months ago, and the lot is not listed on the city’s website, she said. Public Works Director Dan Dinges said he would have signage to point shoppers to the lot within two weeks. McKittrick suggested the lot be monitored through the next 90 to 120 days to give the lot an opportunity to be used, to allow the city’s online maps to be changed and the signage installed.

BATAVIA

Full-time development post OK’d By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen on Monday voted to make the city’s economic development position a full-time post. “I’m encouraged to see what this person can do,” 7th Ward Alderman Dawn Tenuta said. Meredith Hannah had been the city’s economic development analyst since July

2008, but Hannah left the parttime post in February. Assistant City Administrator Jason Bajor said making the position full-time would help the city. “The primary focus of the position would revolve around business retention and expansion, as well as marketing and attraction,” Bajor said in a memo to aldermen. The position would pay

between $55,000 and $77,000 a year. He said staff had conducted a review of comparable positions within the employment market. “Estimating a starting salary at the midpoint [$65,000] and with additional benefits, the total cost for the position is projected to be about $94,000,” Bajor said. Hannah earned about $36,000 a year in the part-time role.

liquor requests By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two restaurants hoping to open in St. Charles by May 1 are one step closer to getting their liquor license. The Government Operations Committee on Monday recommended approval of a Class B2 license for Macarena Tapas, which is taking over the former Fat Rosie’s location at 1890 W. Main St., and a Class B6 license for Volpe, which is taking over the former Isacco Kitchen space at 210 Cedar St. Fourth Ward Alderman Jo Krieger voted against both licenses. Committee Chairman Jim Martin said he was sorry that the city would grant a liquor license to an establishment downtown, an area where additional liquor licenses aren’t needed. The City Council has been

scrutinizing the downtown bar scene since Mayor Don DeWitte, who also acts as liquor commissioner, asked aldermen in August to change the city’s closing time from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. in an effort to curb overserving. “We have a great opportunity to reduce our liquor licenses at this time,” Martin said. “It’s a restaurant. It’s not a bar,” 2nd Ward Alderman Cliff Carrignan said of Volpe. According to city documents, Volpe will serve Italian food and employ about 15 staff members, all of whom worked at Isacco Kitchen. Meanwhile, Macarena Tapas will serve tapas, and the liquor will consist mostly of wine, although liquor and beer also will be available, according to city documents. Documents indicate the owners have run a restaurant under the same name in Naperville since 2007.

ST. CHARLES

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Firefighters spent more than two hours Sunday battling a fire that left a St. Charles house unlivable, the St. Charles Fire Department said in a news release. The house, which was converted into a day care center, was unoccupied when a passer-by noticed the fire and called 911 about 12:30 p.m., acting Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said. Upon arrival at 608 State Ave., firefighters found heavy smoke showing from all three floors. Once inside, the department reported, firefighters saw

that the blaze affected each story and upgraded the alarm to bring assistance to the scene. Although the fire was extinguished in about two and a half hours, firefighters remained on the scene to complete salvage operations and to conduct the investigation. Schelstreet said Monday that investigators had yet to determine the cause, which didn’t appear to be suspicious. He wouldn’t say where in the house the fire started because of the pending investigation. Estimated loss is $200,000 to the house and $50,000 to the contents, according to the department. No injuries were reported.

states. In a March 22 email from Shepro to McMurray, the attorney takes her to task for releasing emails between Wissing and his attorney, which are not subject to release under FOIA. “I can only conclude in light of your certification as FOIA officer by the Attorney General that your actions were a deliberate attempt to disseminate documents that would compromise the privilege,” Shepro wrote. “You are admonished in the strongest possible terms.” Shepro was appointed as the highway district’s interim FOIA officer. Wissing said he did not send email from his township account, but from his personal account to the township server so there would be a record. Wissing said he now was in the process of collecting them. As to the cellphone records, Shepro said Wissing had township calls forwarded to his personal cellphone. The carrier, AT&T, only can provide one year’s worth. And as

officials recently discovered, the carrier supplied only Wissing’s personal number and the township number, not the originating numbers. “There are no numbers for incoming calls, so how do we get them? So we are writing back [to AT&T] this afternoon,” Shepro said. Donald Craven, an attorney for the Illinois Press Association, said McMurray’s removal and the heightened issues connected to the records requests are not that unusual. “It’s Illinois,” Craven said. “It’s local politics at its best.” But when a public official uses a personal email or cellphone for government business, Craven said, it is still a public record subject to FOIA. “According to the [Illinois] Attorney General, township business on a personally owned computer or cellphone is still a public record and still has to be disclosed,” Craven said. “The theory here is, people are entitled to see how the people’s business is being done. It’s not that hard.”

GENEVA – The Freedom of Information Act officer for the Geneva Township Highway District was removed from her post March 20 over criticisms that she released information that violated attorney-client privilege, refused to seek an extension of time and told the requester that the commissioner, Mark Wissing, was refusing to release requested records. Sheri McMurray, the highway department’s now former FOIA officer, said she would not comment. The issue began with FOIA requests for records from Wissing’s challenger in the April 9 consolidated election, Michael Abts. Abts filed records requests Feb. 19, Feb. 26, March 1, March 8 and March 26, seeking, among other things, all sent and received emails and phone records from Wissing over the four years he has served as highway commissioner. “I wanted to see the incom-

ing and outgoing emails and cell calls to see if he was using them for political use,” Abts said. Although Wissing mingled the personal accounts with the government accounts, he said he never used a government account for political purposes. “Not a one,” Wissing said. Wissing dismissed McMurray as FOIA officer in a March 20 letter stating that her conduct “has been unnecessarily, unjustifiably and deliberately confrontational and insubordinate.” Wissing’s letter asserted that she refused to furnish him or the district’s attorney, Kenneth Shepro, with copies of Wissing’s records, refused to cooperate with Shepro in preparing a response to the request or in reviewing her written response. Wissing asserts that McMurray told the requester that he refused to provide the records – which he said is not true. “I have no alternative but to remove you … effective immediately,” Wissing’s letter

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A vote for leadership To the Editor: We support the re-election of Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns. Years ago, under different leadership, it was difficult to attend a Geneva City Council meeting and discuss any issue civilly. City Hall was a hostile environment. It did not matter if conversations were with aldermen, city staff or citizens. There was a total lack of respect for different points of view or how to resolve pending issues. Consequently, nothing constructive gets done in an atmosphere like this. Since Mayor Burns has been our mayor, he has set a precedent for civil, respectful discourse during council meetings. People don’t always agree, but they are able to dialogue in a way that opens minds to different points of view and leads to positive resolve of issues and teamwork. Under his leadership, he has also implemented a citizen survey online at www.geneva.il.us. (Click on “What’s new in Geneva?”) This is another opportunity for citizens to give input on various aspects of our community. The recent staffing analysis by managing consulting firm Voorhees Associates reports that Geneva is well managed. This report also found we are more efficient with fewer employees while maintaining high-quality services for Geneva. Karl Nollenberger, who did a recent presentation, said: “Geneva has one of the best, outstanding planning and goal-setting processes that I’ve seen in a city government organization. The leadership does an outstanding job here.” Bravo to Mayor Burns, city staff and aldermen, especially in these challenging times. Sikich Consulting Firm is also helping us update our strategic plan through various focus groups. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

today at Geneva City Hall, all Geneva citizens are invited to participate in another focus group to give valuable input. Our mayor, city staff and aldermen promote and encourage all of these processes for us to evaluate all aspects of our community and become the best we can be. These opportunities promote and encourage us to do better and move forward in all areas that impact our community. A vote for Mayor Burns is a vote for servant leadership, advocacy, accessibility, community teamwork and fiscal responsibility while maintaining a high quality of services. We are voting for a mayor who works well in concert with city staff, our aldermen, citizens and those in other communities. John and Mary Lu O’Halloran Geneva

An ideal candidate To the Editor: As a resident in Geneva’s 1st Ward, I am so thankful that Mike Bruno’s time has finally come. For years, we – as neighbors – have been encouraging Mike to run for public office. We have always felt that he had the skills, personality and – most of all – the heart to do a great job for Geneva as an alderman. Mike’s love for all things Geneva is well-known. Combine that love and passion with personal attributes of honesty and integrity – along with the professional skills of an engineer and businessman – and you’ve got the ideal candidate for the 1st Ward. Thirty years in the city – 11 serving on the historic preservation commission – indicate that he is here for the long haul. Years ago, our house was struck by lightning. Within minutes, Mike was at our doorstep offering his home. He checked on us throughout the night and made sure that

others in the area knew what had happened. Over the years, I’ve watched Mike selflessly offer his time, energy and talents to our city. Mike admits that self-promotion is not one of his strengths. He is intrinsically guided by his humble desire to simply serve the constituents of his beloved town. We are truly fortunate to have a candidate of Mike Bruno’s caliber, and I look forward to voting for him April 9. Anne Fleming

Furthermore, WCC has demonstrated a record of solid financial stewardship and balanced budgets. In addition to the outstanding leadership of the administration and the highest professional quality of its faculty, another integral component to the success of WCC is the sup-

These two members have demonstrated an energetic and total dedication to the successful growth of WCC. They are two of the best among the best. I have had the privilege of following the careers of a number of WCC grads whom I taught in high school, and every one speaks glowingly of the contributions WCC has made to their success. Bulldogs shut down Panthers Horton, Tenuta hold Glenbard North to 3 hits in victory By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com

CAROL STREAM – The Batavia baseball team turned in a performance Monday that was nearly as crisp as the weather. With the thermometer hovering just below 40 degrees and a gusty westerly wind blowing out to right field making it feel about 10 degrees colder, the Bulldogs dispatched Glenbard North, 3-0, in less than two hours. Luke Horton and Emilio Tenuta combined to pitch a three-hit shutout as Batavia improved to 5-0. Horton (2-0) went the first three innings, allowing just one hit. He walked one and struck out four. Tenuta gave up only a pair of singles over the final four innings. He walked one and struck out three. “It’s our senior pitching again,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “Luke came out, he was on a pitch count, went three innings, kept them scoreless. And then Emilio won’t start until Monday, so we thought we’d let him go in relief and get his innings in. … I think our starting pitching has given up one run in five games.” While he was on the mound, Tenuta appeared to have no trouble dealing with the weather conditions, but after the game he said the cold did make his job more difficult. “I’m not the biggest fan of it,” he said. “I mean, my arm gets cold, my hands get cold, and you can’t get the greatest grip on the ball.” Hitting in cold weather

Cougars ignore true-blue temptation Cubs chatter flooded the Cougars’ front office from the time Kane County announced its two-year player-development contract with the North Siders in September. An affiliation that officially gets under way with Thursday’s season opener against Quad Cities at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark was even rumored to be adopting a new look and moniker. Alas, the only Kane County Cubs coming to town will be those big league players and executives who make the trek to Geneva in their free time. The Cougars might don Cubbie blue batting practice jerseys and warm-up jackets, but otherwise are keeping the look of the past two-plus decades. “There wasn’t much to it,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said. “I think we made it clear that we were going to stick with our color schemes and our name. We worked hard for 22 years to develop the brand, and we’re going to stick with it for now, for sure.” Late Monday afternoon,

QUICK READ Kevin Druley the Cougars tweeted a picture of the team’s Peoria Charter Coach bus arriving at the ballpark. That’s a popular Midwest League transportation line, one fan told another searching for irony. Before this season, the Peoria Chiefs were a Cubs affiliate from 2005-12. The team’s uniforms looked a lot like the Cubs’, including home white jerseys and pants with blue pinstripes and blue caps. First-year Cougars manager Mark Johnson guided the Cubs’ Short-A affiliate in Boise, Idaho, the past two seasons, donning uniforms with hunter green, red, orange and yellow during that time. Boise switched from red, white and blue to its current color scheme before the 2007 season. While a handful of other Cubs farmhands adapt to the big league brand, it is not an

organization-wide mandate. “[Triple-A] Iowa is red and blue and [Double-A] Tennessee is red and blue and [High-A] Daytona is red and blue,” Johnson said. “Boise is almost the same colors as Kane County, the black and green. “The only concern is wearing blue shoes with green uniforms. The only reason I say that is we had the same thing in Boise. A little bit of a clash, but when you get out there on that field, it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. We’re just coming up there to play ball.” Haug, who entered the Cougars organization as a group sales representative and souvenir merchandise manager in November 1993, begins his second season as GM. He’s eager to steer the club into an exciting new era and build the foundation laid by inaugural Cougars general manager Bill Larsen, who Haug called “the pied piper.” “You just have a lot of new fans out there,” Haug said. “There’s tons of Cubs fans

We’ve had double-digit hits in the last three games.” Batavia employed the hitand-run effectively to score the first run of the game in the second inning. Robbie Bowman led off the inning with a sharp single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dean Simoncelli. An infield single by Andrew Seigler put runners on the corners with one out. ers. Gianacakos also collected offers from Kansas, Toledo, Ball State, Missouri, Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Wyoming. Choosing the Spartans over the Illini isn’t expected to create any dissension in the Gianacakos household, though his parents – Rich and Stephanie – were both student-athletes in Champaign. “They support my decision but I know they’re Illini,” Gianacakos said. “I grew up being an Illini fan, so they can be Illini fans, but I think Michigan State is definitely the place for me. I’m excited.” Gianacakos only started

playing football once he hit high school after living internationally with his family for much of his childhood. At different points, he called China, England, Spain and the Netherlands home. He is leaning toward majoring in business, and said a conversation with a business advisor at Michigan State also pulled him in the Spartans’ direction. “Thinking about college, you can be [worried] from an academic standpoint,” Gianacakos said. “He kind of made me calmer and kind of explained to me what I could be doing now to be successful in college, which was really cool. That was big for me.” Gianacakos said he is

looking forward to his senior season with the North Stars. North’s new coach, Rob Pomazak, is a dogged proponent of the weight room, and Gianacakos said the North Stars are off to a good start there this offseason. “Coach Pomazak brings a great energy to our program, weightlifting-wise,” Gianacakos said. “I think the team is buying into that. That’s huge for us. He knows what he’s doing, he knows how to get us big, how to get us strong, and it’s a great team-building opportunity for us all to be in there lifting together. … To meet our goals of getting back to the playoffs, winning conference, that’s huge for us.”

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: WHEATON NORTH DEF. STC EAST 2-0 (25-20, 25-22)

St. Charles North’s Jack Bujko (14) goes for a kill against Schaumburg during their championship match at the West Aurora Invite on Saturday. The North Stars won the title after defeating the Saxons, 25-27, 25-18, 25-11.

ST. CHARLES – Senior libero Sam Pulcanio spots several familiar faces when he sets up the defense for the St. Charles East boys volleyball team. That the Saints gaze back from different positions in the huddle has helped illustrate their slow start, which continued with Monday’s 25-20, 25-22 loss to Wheaton North. “A lot of our guys have experience through club and stuff, and everybody here definitely has a lot of skill,” Pulcanio said. “But there are definitely people who are playing in spots that they’re not familiar with and that are new to them. We’re doing really well at adjusting, we just need a little bit more time to fully adjust and play our positions.” East (2-4) grabbed an early lead in the second game before surrendering a key 5-0 run that put it behind for the remainder of the match. Several points later, Saints coach Kate McCullagh and assistant Mike Bui brought forth an issue with the Falcons’ libero substitution. The

ruling pulled East to within 18-13, but any further momentum was squelched when the Saints uncorked a service error. “I don’t know if there was a turning point; I think it was pretty consistently rough throughout the whole match,” McCullagh said. “I just think that we’re making silly errors, and I think through practice and working together, we’ll be able to hopefully get the kinks out.” The Saints graduated just one starter from last season’s team. While Pulcanio, a thirdyear varsity member, remains a mainstay at libero, Iain O’Connor has balanced time at setter and middle hit-

ter while Clayton Davis sees more time at right-side than before. East’s attack showed well in spurts, with Tom DeBruyne (10 assists), finding Tom Dieter, Jacob Samuels, Luke Spicer and R.J. Yoder – who smacked four kills apiece. Zach Sinn paced the Falcons with seven kills. “They didn’t do anything overly special. There were just moments where we fell flat and we couldn’t quite get our feet out from under us,” said Pulcanio, who had nine digs. “So we just need to work on getting out of those positions where we’re in a hole and then coming back from those.” Wheaton North coach Bob St. Leger acknowledged his mistake in the libero subsitution while calling the victory a blend of “sharp in some areas, and I guess a little lazy in some areas.” McCullagh knows that kind of early-season victory, but would just as soon see her team get everything fixed first before going on a tear. “We’d love to win games now,” she said, “but the focus is to just get better throughout the season.”

It would have been understandable for the schools to start blending together for St. Charles North junior Chase Gianacakos. The fast-emerging offensive tackle fielded 11 Division-I football scholarship offers during the past six weeks, beginning with Kansas in mid-February, and has visited several of those schools since. But for Gianacakos, Michigan State never was lost in the shuffle and, on Saturday, the 6-foot-6, 286-pounder gave offensive line coach Mark Staten and the Spartans a verbal commitment.

Gianacakos took a second visit to Michigan State’s campus during spring break, helping solidify his thinking. “From the very first time I was there, it just stood out to me,” Gianacakos said. “It was a special place. Coach Staten, [head coach Mark Dantonio] really have that mindset of we’re going to push you, we’re going to make you a great football player, but we’re also going to take time to get to know you as a person and help you grow as a person.” Michigan State was among four Big Ten programs to offer a scholarship to Gianacakos in recent weeks, with Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota being the oth-

KOVELS: ANTIQUES AND COLLECTING

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Wooden dolls date back centuries. The earliest were crude carved pieces of wood shaped like a human figure. But today it’s rare to find a doll made before the 1600s, when English and German draftsmen skillfully carved wooden lifelike dolls. Most collectors today look for later carved “peg wooden” dolls like those made in Grodnertal, Germany. The dolls, which date from about 1820 to 1840, were created with arms and legs that could bend because of their pegged joints at the knees and hips, elbows and shoulders. The early ones have heartshaped faces, long necks and elongated bodies. Their extra-long legs showed off their high-waisted Empire-style dresses. After the 1840s, doll carvers took shortcuts and the dolls had round faces and chunky bodies. A 2012 Theriault’s auction offered a Grodnertal peddler doll. The 13inch doll had her original painted face, human hair wig and jointed arms and legs. Her value increased because she wore her original clothes, from dress to cap, cape and undergarments. She was holding a peddler’s tray filled with lace, sewing materials, household goods and a tiny miniature Grodnertal wooden doll. Because she was old, attractive and in good original condition, a collector paid more than $2,900 to take her home.

A: Daystrom was founded in Olean, N.Y., in 1934. At first the company made metal ashtrays. By 1938 it was producing chromium kitchen furniture and upholstered stools and chairs. Daystrom moved to South Boston in 1962 and began using the name “Daystrom Furniture.” Daystrom’s low-end dinette sets sold well during the 1960s, but foreign competition began affecting the furniture market by the 1970s. The company was sold several times and closed in 1996. Since your chair is marked “Made in Occupied Japan,” Daystrom must have

Can you tell me if there is a demand for these and if they have any value? A: Wheaties first offered miniature auto license plates from all 48 states and the District of Columbia in 1953. Four different sets of 12 plates each could be ordered by sending in 25 cents and a Wheaties box top. The District of Columbia plate was available in random boxes of Wheaties. It was a very successful promotion and increased Wheaties sales. Many boys and girls sent for the license plates and attached them to their bicycles. Post Cereals issued plate sets in 1968 and 1982. Single plates sell for about $5 today. A set of 49 plates issued in 1953-54, with original mailers, sold several years ago for more than $600. ***

GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Cubs, have announced the team’s preliminary Opening Day roster. The incoming group of 26 players will be reduced to a Midwest League-mandated squad of 25 before Thursday’s season opener at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark against the Quad Cities River Bandits. The Cougars’ roster includes seven of the top 30 Cubs organizational prospects according to Baseball America, and several key components of last season’s Short-A Boise squad that advanced to the Northwest League Championship Series last fall. Cougars manager Mark Johnson begins his coaching career at Kane County after managing at Boise for the past two seasons. He will be accompanied by pitching coach Ron Villone and hitting coach Tom Beyers. The infield will include the season with the Cubs’ second

round pick in 2011. Dan Vogelbach, a second-round pick in 2011, was ranked the Cubs’ seventh-best prospect by Baseball America and the best power hitter. Vogelbach, a first baseman, hit .322 and belted 17 home runs in 61 games between Rookie-level Mesa and Boise last season. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario (ranked eighth) was the youngest regular in the Northwest League last season and batted .281 with 6 home runs and 47 RBI for Boise as an 18-year old. Middle infielder Gioskar Amaya (ranked 21st) led the Northwest League with 12 triples last season and topped NWL second basemen with a .968 fielding percentage. Marco Hernandez (ranked 20th) split last season between Class-A Peoria and Boise, batting .286 with at Boise in 67 games. The Cougars’ pitching staff features right-hander Pierce Johnson, the 43rd overall selection in June’s draft and the sixth-best prospect in the Cubs organization. Jose Arias, another right-handed

HOROSCOPE By BERNICE BEDE OSOL Newspaper Enterprise Association TODAY – In coming months, you could be luckier than usual in bringing things to successful conclusions. Although you should be able to depend on Lady Luck’s help, you must also lend a hand. ARIES (March 21-April 19) – Be extremely careful that you don’t achieve your purposes at the expense of someone else. It would severely damage your image. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) – Usually you can do quite well in partnership situations, but this isn’t likely to be the case if your aims differ considerably from the other party. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) – A potentially profitable endeavor that has been dormant for quite some time could become active, but you’ll need to redesign it in order to capitalize on it. CANCER (June 21-July 22) – Don’t get too closely involved with someone who has a dubious reputation. Take plenty of time to really find out what your potential partners are all about. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) – If you’re giving a price quote for a job or service, be sure your estimated cost is as accurate as possible. If not, you might work very hard but earn little. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) – When required to manage a serious situation for another, don’t treat it indifferently. If you make a mistake, everyone will pay. It’s important to think on your feet and change your mindset to suit new circumstances. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) – Strive to be logical when making an assessment that would directly affect your financial position. It would likely prove to be disastrous to put all of your hopes on Lady Luck. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) – In order to be a true leader, you must not be afraid to take charge of situations, even if you don’t have a lot personally invested in their outcome. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) – Several important objectives can be achieved today, provided you don’t trip over your own feet. Chances are it will be self-inflicted obstacles that will be your nemesis. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) – Be careful, because a well-intentioned friend might offer you some advice that, if you treat it as gospel, could prove to be costly. Filmmaker has a different take on courage By AL ALEXANDER GateHouse News Service Catholic guilt isn’t just a theorem to Derek Cianfrance; it’s a religion. And the acclaimed writer-director of bleak parables such as “Blue Valentine” and his latest treatise on human foibles, “The Place Beyond the Pines,” believes penitence, however painful, is the pathway to love and forgiveness. “The only way to get better is to confront your failures and confront your fears,” Cianfrance said while in Boston to promote “Pines,” which opens Friday. “I don’t relate to this idea of no fear, like the X-Games. I’m terrified, but I always confront my terror ... because I feel that’s the nature of courage. So that’s what I’m trying to do with my films, just go to courageous places.” Places – in this instance – like Schenectady, N.Y., where “Pines” unfolds around a pair of family trees, one planted in poverty and the other imbedded in riches. Through fate and what Cianfrance calls divine province, their roots become irreparably entwined to the point where one, or both, will die unless they opt for mercy over vengeance. Starring the suddenly red-hot Bradley Cooper and Cianfrance’s muse, Ryan Gosling, the film is a multigenerational study of fathers and sons and the legacies they leave, good and bad, but mostly the latter. “The characters all come from a deep psychology,” Cianfrance said. “For instance, Ryan’s guy, Luke, grew up without a father. He finds out he has a kid. The last thing he wants to do is have that kid feel the way he felt when he was a kid. He’s going to be there for him.” “Now, does he have any tools to be there? No. How can he be a part of this kid’s life? By making a hundred dollars a week as a mechanic? No. So, how can Luke be the right choice? He can’t, and he ends up putting himself in a place where he gets taken out of his son’s life. He’s trying to avoid something but he ends up colliding into it. “Bradley’s guy, Avery, is born into royalty. And he’s expected to assume

Derek Cianfrance Wikipedia photo

the mantle that his father sets before him. But he doesn’t want that. He wants to define himself in his own way. “So, he becomes a cop. Is he ever meant to be a cop? I don’t think so. He’s meant to be his father’s son. But he tries to prove himself as a cop. Then this moment happens, and because he’s trying to prove himself, he acts in that moment with too much ambition, with too much eagerness to prove that he’s his own man. And he makes a mistake. And he never comes clean with that mistake because he would be punished for it. So he tries to avoid the punishment, but his soul becomes corrupted by it. “He has this toxic shame that manifests itself in his son. It’s very Catholic.” And even though “Pines” contains many a violent moment, including one particularly gruesome scene, Cianfrance insists the intent is to show the finality of death and make it real for a generation that’s become desensitized by its depiction in movies and video games. “I’m sick of seeing guns in movies,” he said. “I never really thought that I would put a gun in a movie. But then I was thinking about legacy – an American legacy. The kind of brutality, the ruthlessness and the massacres that this country is founded on. We

now live in a domesticated world, but there’s no running away from our history. So I was thinking about the responsibility of putting violence on screen and how much of an allergy I feel toward the fetishizing of violence, the coolness of violence; the idea of this ballet of violence as something beautiful. I don’t think it’s beautiful. If I see another bullet come out of someone’s gun in slow motion and hit someone’s head and have their brain paint the wall, I’m going to throw up.” While “Pines” is definitive Cianfrance, the movie, like all of his works, is foremost a collaborative effort. “I think that’s the nature of cinema. It’s not egocentric,” he said. “It’s not like being a painter. I need people to be able to make things. I’m nothing without my actors, I’m nothing without my cinematographer, my editors. That’s the beauty of filmmaking to me. So I approach filmmaking as a coach. I build an enthusiastic team around me and I try to bring out the best in them.” As an example, he pointed to one of the most memorable scenes in “Blue Valentine,” the one where Gosling and Michelle Williams are riding home on a bus after visiting an abortion clinic. “Ryan and Michelle thought that she should sit on Ryan’s lap,” Cianfrance said. “I thought she should sit next to him. I thought sitting on his lap was too much. I said, ‘Democracy of ideas. We do what you want, and we do what I want. And we don’t question each other. Every idea is valid.’ Then, when we got into the editing room, I realized their idea was much better than mine. So, I’m humbled to know that I’m not always going to be the smartest and have the best instincts. I need people.” “This movie is Darwinist,” he added. “It’s about evolution. It’s about continuation. It’s about moving forward. It’s about survival. And I think that’s the only way to survive – through forgiveness. It’s not through vengeance. When my kids get old enough, I’ll be proud to show them my movies because I’m taking a responsibility. I could never show them a movie I made about vengeance. Or a movie I made about hate. Yes, the characters journey through pain, but that’s how you break through to catharsis.”

Woman wants luxuriant locks to stay that way DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips

• Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.

For some women with breast cancer, lumpectomy is effective Dear Doctor K: I was recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. My doctor wants me to consider a lumpectomy plus radiation. But wouldn’t a mastectomy be more effective? Dear Reader: In a lumpectomy, just the cancer and tissue immediately around it are removed, and radiation therapy is used to kill any nearby cancer cells that might not have been removed. In a mastectomy, the whole breast is removed. Since sometimes breast cancer cells (invisible to the eye of the surgeon) can spread into the surrounding breast, it’s plausible to think that a mastectomy might have a better cure rate than just a lumpectomy. However, recent results from a large study add to evidence in support of a more conservative approach. That would be lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. The study included more than 112,000 women treated for early-stage breast cancer (cancer that has not spread beyond the breast or the underarm lymph nodes). Fifty-five percent of these women underwent lumpectomy and radiation, while 45 percent had mastectomy. Researchers followed the women for about nine years.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The study found that women who chose lumpectomy plus radiation were less likely to die of breast cancer or from any other cause than women who chose mastectomy. Still, we should take these results with a small grain of salt. This was not a randomized trial, the gold standard of medical research. Women were not randomly assigned to one treatment or the other. Instead, each woman and her doctor decided on the treatment. It’s possible that women who chose mastectomy were less healthy to begin with, or at higher risk for aggressive cancer. Perhaps that’s why women who chose lumpectomy plus radiation did better. Nevertheless, previously published major randomized trials suggest that women like you will do equally well with either lumpectomy and radiation or simple mastectomy. Also, bear in mind that lumpectomy plus radiation therapy isn’t the best choice for all women with early-stage breast

cancer. In general, mastectomy may be better for women with large tumors, or with more than one tumor in a breast. Mastectomy may also be better for women who were at higher risk for breast cancer, such as those who have close relatives with breast cancer or know they have a “breast cancer gene.” If your doctor has said a lumpectomy is a reasonable choice, I’m assuming that the type of mastectomy being considered is a simple mastectomy: Just the breast would be removed, not tissues between your breast and armpit. Based on what you say, a larger operation would not usually be necessary. For a woman newly diagnosed with breast cancer, it pays to carefully think through your options. Talk with your doctor and trusted friends and family to find the treatment strategy that’s best for you. The good news is that there is now solid scientific evidence that many women with breast cancer do not require mastectomy.

Dr. Wallace: I’ve been told by my family and friends that I have the physical attributes to become a fashion model. This has caused me to believe that I could become rich and famous by wearing the latest fashions with everyone looking at me. I know that becoming a glamorous model would take a lot of hard work and then I’d have to be lucky enough to be “discovered.” I’m sure I can do the hard work, but how can I be “discovered”? I don’t live in New York City or Los Angeles. – Nameless, Kansas City, Mo. Dear Nameless: The career you want may not be as glamorous as you think. In reality, modeling is a tough and demanding profession, and young women who aspire to be models should know the facts about the business. “High times in front of the camera, followed by big nights out on the town are not really what modeling is all about,” says Seventeen Magazine writer Cathryn Jakobson. “It is hard on the body and the face – and much tougher on the ego.” The business can be especially rigorous in New York City, a destination for many wouldbe models who hope to be signed by an agency. However, top modeling agencies rarely find fresh modeling prospects waiting in their reception area. Young women who want to be models should send agencies a head shot and body shot of themselves, along with their measurements, height, weight and hair and eye color. “Any agents worth their salt can tell all they need to know from a good, clear snapshot.” Jakobson notes. And if these agencies like what they see, they can bring

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace the girl to New York for a closer look. One word of caution: If one of the well-respected agencies won’t sign you, then it is probably best to give up. Signing with an unknown agency is unwise and may even be dangerous. But even if a girl is signed by a major agency, that does not necessarily mean she will be flooded with work. Agencies send their models on interviews with clients and editors on what is called “go-sees,” and many times these models are not chosen for a job. As one young model noted, “You have to remember that if you get rejected, you still exist. The world hasn’t ended.” Another common fallacy young women may have about modeling is the notion that their faces will be splattered across a magazine’s fashion pages, Jakobson says. In truth, the majority of models find work filling the pages of mail-order catalogs, and others do runway work or television commercials. Most models do not even survive the first year in New York. While some girls view their short time in the Big Apple as a good experience then head back home, others may be overcome with disappointment at failing to make it. Does this mean you should give up your dream to become a fashion model? Absolutely not! If you meet all the qualifications and have dedication, desire, diligence and drive – go for it! • Email Dr. Robert Wallace at rwallace@ galesburg.net.

again. How do I get my message across to these people without sounding defensive or snobby? – Rapunzel In Michigan Dear Rapunzel: I think I detect a twinge of jealousy in the “good friends” who imply you are being selfish or hypocritical for not donating your lovely locks. It would be neither defensive nor snobby to smile and reply: “We all must decide for ourselves how we will support the charities that are important to us. I have chosen to donate in other ways.” Dear Abby: I have been with my boyfriend, “Keoni,” for five years. We have a healthy relationship. However, when we go out to the grocery store, the doctor’s office or the mall, women constantly question his ethnicity, which is Hawai-

ian. Then, without fail, they’ll proceed to tell him (and me) how handsome, beautiful or gorgeous he is. Keoni does nothing to make me feel less than pretty myself, but these frequent comments from strangers have started to make me feel insecure about my own appearance. How do I accept these compliments without resentment? – Keoni’s Girlfriend In Florida Dear Girlfriend: What may be upsetting you is that these women ask your boyfriend inappropriate questions and appear to be coming on to him. Face it, your boyfriend is exotic. If you were in Hawaii, he wouldn’t be exotic – YOU might be. The next time this happens and someone raves about his good looks, remember that Keoni’s with you, not her. But if she’s pushy, “suggest” she move to Hawaii and get “lei-ed.”

ADVICE | Kane County Chronicle / KCChronicle.com

Dear Abby: My hair falls nearly to my waist, and I go to great lengths to maintain it and keep it free of split ends. Many of my friends, both male and female, have grown out their hair over the years and donated it to cancer charities. While I think it’s a beautiful act of selflessness, I have never felt the calling to donate my hair. I have recently been criticized for wanting to keep my long hair for myself and have been called selfish and a hypocrite. Abby, cancer runs in my family. I donate money and volunteer for my local Relay for Life every year. When I explain this to my “attackers” – some of them good friends – they look the other way and say I’m “horrible” because I won’t cut my hair and give it to those in need. I cut my hair very short 10 years ago and regretted it. Now I’m feeling pressured to do it

If it is a loser, do not ruff at first

CELEBRITY CIPHER

William Lyon Phelps was a popular columnist and public speaker who taught the first American university course on the modern novel. He said, “If at first you don’t succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.” At the bridge table, a loser usually gives a trick to the opponents. Sometimes, though, taking that trick can be costly. In today’s deal, what should be the result in four spades after West leads the club king? Note East’s balancing one-notrump overcall. This shows only 11 to 15 points. With a normal strong no-trump, East doubles and rebids in no-trump. South’s three-heart rebid and North’s jump to four spades were aggressive but reasonable. North liked his three-card spade support, a ruffing value in South’s second suit and an ace. South wins the first trick with dummy’s ace, plays a heart to his queen, cashes the heart ace, and leads another heart. Should West ruff with his spade 10 or pitch a minor-suit card? In general, if declarer is about to ruff a loser, the defender should discard. Here, if West ruffs, the contract can be made. South trumps the (say) club continuation, ruffs a heart on the board (bringing down East’s king), and plays a spade to his nine. He continues with a high trump and loses only two spades and one diamond. If West correctly discards at trick four, the play gets interesting. South ruffs, trumps a club in his hand and leads another heart. Now West must ruff! He then leads a minor, and South cannot avoid losing another two spades and one diamond to East.
