Marengo butcher prepares to retire By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com MARENGO – Marengo’s longtime butcher is ready to give his hands a rest. Rodger Brandt, the 70-yearold owner of Wayne’s Country Market, is getting ready to retire after working at the meat market for nearly six decades. Wayne’s Country Market seems from a bygone era. Brandt knows many customers by name and order. Indeed, customer service is a hallmark of his business. “Wayne’s is an icon,” said Randy Hauschildt, chairman of the Marengo-Union Chamber of Commerce Board and manager of BMO Harris Bank in Marengo. “Its reputation in the community is superb. [Brandt] knows his customers, and the people love him.” Hauschildt and his family have been shopping at Wayne’s Country Market for many years. Brandt would like to see the business, Marengo’s second oldest, continue after he retires. But it’s not yet clear what will happen to it. Brandt’s shop is at the front of his property at 801 W. Grant Highway. The nearly 3-acre site includes units rented to an auto body shop and a towing service. It is listed for sale for $1.7 million. Brothers Wayne and Bob Beggs opened Wayne’s Country Market on Main Street in a small store in 1952. Brandt started working there in 1955 when he was 12. He made 25 cents an hour his first week on the job, but did well enough that Wayne Beggs doubled his salary during his second week. Unable to afford college, Brandt absorbed all he could and developed a passion for his work at Wayne’s. “I didn’t know if it was what I wanted to do,” Brandt said. “But I’ve enjoyed it ever since.” Wayne Beggs taught Brandt the business – first how to clean up around the store, then how to wait on customers, and finally, how to cut and prepare the meat. Brandt was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966 and came back to Marengo to work as

He spent 15 years in that position before buying the store in 1984 from Bob Beggs. In 2001, a fire forced Brandt to relocate. He picked a larger space on Route 20 in Marengo’s central business district. Wayne’s celebrated its 60th anniversary there in 2012. “The rewarding part is customer satisfaction,” Brandt said. “You give customers a good quality meat, and they are pleased and happy with it and they continue to come back. I have some of the best patrons and clientele in the world.” Brandt’s wife, Barbara, and daughter, Brianna, and several grandchildren also work at the store. Over the years, Brandt has created new rubs and marinades to keep things interesting at Wayne’s. There are about 20 different varieties of chicken breast, featuring a variety of marinades, rubs and stuffed options. In the 1950s, Beggs began making bratwursts with a recipe he got from a German he’d met in Wisconsin. The idea was slow to catch on because back then nobody had heard of brats. Wayne’s still sells that original brat recipe, and more than 10 variations – from ja-

Many residents would find it hard to imagine Marengo without Wayne’s Country Market, said Marengo-Union Chamber of Commerce Managing Director Christine Wienke. Several local restaurants and businesses also depend on Wayne’s for meat and other products, she said. “To go in there and not see Rodger behind the counter,” Hauschildt said, “would be a real culture shock to the community.” Brandt said he’s not sure

what will happen to the business he and his family have helped build and expand over the decades. “I hope someone would take it over, but I’m not exactly sure if that is going to happen,” he said. “I’ll probably be here for a few more years with the way the economy is. Nobody’s buying.” Brandt talked his grandson out of purchasing the family business because of the long hours. Brandt said he routinely works 70 to 80 hours a week. But if the right offer comes in, Brandt said he’s ready to retire.

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO HUNTLEY – Lisl Bogart remembers a teacher spitting at her face and calling her a filthy Jew before kicking her out of class. It happened the morning after German Nazis seized her hometown of Prague in the former Czechoslovakia. Bogart, 13 at the time, scrambled to make sense of the situation, fearing she had done something to upset the teacher. “He got angry at me for one reason only. He was mad at me because I was Jewish,” Bogart said. “That was the first time I felt anti-Semitism on myself.” Bogart shared her story of survival and prejudice with more than 150 Huntley High School students April 3, nearly 68 years after being freed from the Holocaust. She was introduced by Katie Szarzynski, a school social worker who is a family friend of Bogart. The Nazis invaded Prague, the capital city of the now Czech Republic, on March 15, 1939. Bogart, 86, returned

home from school to discover her father no longer could own the small business in town that represented the family’s way of life. Soon after the invasion, the family was treated as second-class citizens. The Jewish Czechs couldn’t use public facilities and transportation. They weren’t allowed to walk the streets past 7 p.m. By June 1942, Bogart found herself with hundreds of other Jewish Czechs in a concrete holding room, living off a few slices of bread for 2 1/2 days. They were then huddled 100 at a time into train cars typically reserved for transporting cattle. “We no longer were treated as human beings,” Bogart recalled. “We were treated worse than the animals.” Her train car opened to the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, commonly referred to as the Terezin ghetto. The camp primarily served as a transit area for the Nazis deporting Jews to forced-labor and death camps such as Auschwitz.

The Theresienstadt camp at its peak confined 60,000 prisoners into an area that barely stretched 700 yards long. It was well-known for lacking adequate living conditions, food and medical supplies. Nearly 35,000 people died at the camp, although it contained no gas chambers. The Nazis also used the camp to host the International Red Cross, which in 1944 wanted to investigate the gruesome reputation of the Nazi’s camps. Bogart was among the 960 prisoners selected to manufacture fake housing and public areas during the months leading up to the visit. The Nazis went as far as creating a bank with artificial money to try and fool the Red Cross. After the hoax was successfully completed, many of the prisoners were sent to Auschwitz to be killed. But Bogart was one of the dozen prisoners spared. She avoided death earlier in September 1942 when a Nazi guard inexplicably pushed her off a ramp that

She later learned family members were placed in gas chambers and killed. To this day, she does not know why the guard pushed her off the ramp. When the Soviet army liberated the Terezin ghetto in May 1945, Bogart was uncon-

scious in an isolated area with typhoid fever. She recalled waking up to see her friend holding a large piece of white bread outside the window of the room. She knew they had been freed. A year later, she immigrated to the United States. “Every morning when I have a slice of bread, I remember freedom,” Bogart told the students.

Marengo delays annexation vote again By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – The City Council again will wait to vote on some controversial annexation deals, since officials need time to develop a new zoning regulation that should clarify recent concerns about an environmental report. City officials have been trying to annex land along Route 23 south and west of its borders to extend its limits and entice the Illinois Tollway Authority to build an interchange at Interstate 90 to spur economic development. The plan has irked neighboring Riley Township officials, who have argued that the city’s annexation approach is too fast and disregards proper planning, especially with zoning. The new agricultural clas-

sification ensures that the landowners, who are trying to annex the initial 1,400 acres to Marengo, will be governed by the same zoning regulations that the McHenry County uses, City Manager Gary Boden said. The new classification also ends the debate the city has been having with the McHenry-Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District for the past month about whether the landowners needed to pay a hefty fee and have the district conduct a natural resources report required by law. “The whole hubbub about the [natural resources] report is nothing more than a blip to take care of because that is what people want,” Boden said. “It hasn’t changed the project. All the zoning classification does is provide more clarity.” The debate over the report started after Riley Supervisor

Karen Schnable alerted the conservation district that the annexing landowners had not yet filed a request. The natural resources report identifies the different environmental conditions of a particular parcel. The report is meant to aid municipalities, such as Marengo, when deciding how to rezone or annex land that may be changed for new development, conservation district officials said. The district is given 30 days from the date of the request to file a report. City officials maintained that the landowners did not need to file the report, since they aren’t proposing any immediate changes to its land despite having to go through rezoning since the city did not have an agricultural zoning classification similar to the county code. Marengo and conservation

district officials have since disagreed on whether state law stipulates that the report is needed when landowners are seeking annexation. To avoid a prolonged debate, the city’s new zoning classification clarifies that the land presently will be used for agricultural purposes and nothing more, Boden said. This change, however, means A.R. Land Co. will need a natural resources report for its 340 acres west of Route 23. The company wants to start mining the area for sand and gravel, and start a compost facility, triggering a land-use change. The conservation district received the company’s request last week. Schnable welcomed the news, arguing that the city now is in compliance with state law. But she still hopes the public could review A.R. Land’s

natural resources report before the city votes on the annexation deals to ensure the land can support a compost facility. “I’m hoping we still have an opportunity to review the report and express concerns,” she said. The development of the new zoning classification means the city once again wil postpone council votes on the three annexation deals until late April or May, Boden said. The city was supposed to vote on the three deals last month, but delayed it to allow time for further negotiation with the landowners. The City Council has to approve seven total annexations before reaching I-90. The city’s zoning commission will now meet today to discuss and recommend the new classification to the council.

Huntley’s Bryce Only celebrates after hitting a home run during a game against Crystal Lake Central on April 4. Huntley won, 16-2.

Only at his best By BILL PEMSTEIN sportsdesk@nwherald.com Now that he’s firmly in the Cornhusker world, University of Nebraska-bound senior Bryce Only won’t need a videotape to show other colleges. If he hadn’t, the April 4 baseball game against Crystal Lake Central – with his pitching and bat – would have been enough to impress them. “That was Bryce’s best pitching performance in four years,’’ Huntley coach Andy

Jakubowski said. Only battled Tigers lefthander Jacob Roley for three tight innings. The unbeaten Red Raiders (6-0) took over from there, beating the Tigers, 16-2, in five innings. “Tyler caught a great, great game,’’ Only said. “And Colin (Lyman) played a great game in center field.” Only threw hard and changed speeds effectively. At the plate, he waited for his second at-bat of the fourth inning for an RBI. In the fifth and final frame, he sent a ball over the center field fence for

a solo homer. That followed a three-run blast from fellow senior Kam Sallee. “We have a good hitting team,’’ Only said. “We are a great overall hitting team.” To start this one-sided contest, there wasn’t much hitting going on. Huntley had a base runner in each of the first two innings but failed to advance them. Central catcher Colin Telmanik had the Tigers’ first hit in the second but didn’t advance past second base. By the Huntley fourth inning, after 11 hitters came to the plate, the game was no lon-

ger in doubt. Lyman scored a pair of runs and drove in another one in the eight-run frame. At the bottom of the lineup, Jake Wagner drove in a pair of runs with an opposite field single. “It was a good game for three innings,’’ Central coach Dan Badgley said. “And then it snowballed on us. Guys put their heads down. We beat Carmel [April 3], so we’ll see how they respond.” The Tigers (2-2) responded in the bottom of the fourth, reaching Only for two runs, all with two outs. Three straight

singles from Parker Harold, Tanner Larkins and Nate Klyczek scored a pair of runs. Huntley wasn’t quite through with their offensive production. In the visitor’s fifth inning, the homer bats helped bring the game to an early end. Huntley closed with seven runs in the final inning. In his four innings of work on the mound, Only struck out five. Lyman closed out the game, striking out two of the three hitters he faced. Mindak reached base all three times with a pair of walks and a hustling double.
