Historic win

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When Kevin Burns is sworn in May 6 for his fourth term, he will make history as Geneva’s longest-serving mayor.

That result is one of many significant stories to come out o f T u e s d a y ’ s Kevin election. Also, Burns Jay Moffat, who once sought to be on three ballots, ended up on two and won a spot on the Geneva Park Board.

And Geoffrey M. Carreiro,

who was tossed off the ballot for Geneva Township Clerk, ran as a write-in and won by one vote against two others, according to unofficial results.

According to a listing of Geneva’s past mayors posted at City Hall, Oliver Adamson served 12 years from 1941 to 1953, the longest until Burns.

Burns said he did not have any particular thoughts about his tenure being historic.

“I really don’t see it that way – ‘making history,’ ” Burns said. “I grew up in a family that valued service, in high school and in the community, in any way, shape or form. To

“I was pleased that we were able to get results as quickly as we could,” Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said. “But I’m displeased at the low voter turnout.”

According to unofficial results from the clerk’s office, 12.98 percent of registered voters cast their ballots in the consolidated election Tuesday. That number does not include voters from within the city limits of Aurora under the jurisdiction of the Aurora Board of Election Commission.

In comparison, 67 percent of registered voters – excluding the Aurora Election Commission – cast a ballot in November’s presidential election.

In the last consolidated election in April 2011, voter turnout was at 13.2 percent, excluding the Aurora Election Commission. In the April 2009 consolidated election, turnout was at 20.4 percent, excluding the Aurora Election Commission.

DeWitte: Rogina will be an ‘outstanding mayor’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As Ray Rogina takes on his new role as St. Charles Mayor, other city officials say they expect he will do a good job.

Outgoing Mayor Don DeWitte said Rogina “will be an outstanding mayor for our residents in St. Charles.”

“He has the right acumen, the right experience and the right level of commitment to serve the community in this capacity,” DeWitte said.

Third Ward Alderman Bill Turner, who was re-elected Tuesday, said he was happy with Rogina’s election as mayor.

Turner and Rogina together have been representing the 3rd Ward since Rogina was elected in 2011.

“I think he’ll be an excellent leader,” said Turner, describing the mayor-elect as a collaborative leader.

Rogina soundly defeated the three other men seeking to lead the city.

According to unofficial results in Kane and DuPage counties, Rogina received 2,031 votes. Jake Wyatt received 989, John Rabchuk got 726 and Jotham Stein netted 600.

Bill Turner St. Charles 3rd Ward alderman could not thank the people of St. Charles enough for having the faith and trust for him to be their next mayor.

“I assure them it won’t go unnoticed by me,” Rogina said.

Rogina’s election results in an open 3rd Ward seat. Rogina can nominate someone for the balance of the aldermanic term, possibly by calling for applications, City Administrator Brian Townsend said. The process is up to Rogina, but nominees must to receive City Council approval, Townsend said.

Rogina said the process will be open and transparent, and he wants the City Council to be involved.

Hill wins close race; Peck’s plans unknown

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Newly elected Kaneville village President Pat Hill on Wednesday said she still was surprised by her narrow victory in Tuesday’s election.

Unofficial results show that Hill received 85 votes, and her opponent, Rick Peck, received 82 votes.

Pat Hill It is unknown whether Peck will contest the results. Because the vote was so close, Peck would have the right to ask for discovery five days after the votes are certified. Kane County election results will be certified in two weeks, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said.

“We still have 129 absentee ballots out,” he said.

Peck, who is the village’s

interim president, could not be reached for comment Wednesday about his plans.

Hill had said one of the first orders of business will include stopping the closure of Kaneville’s post office and returning the office to regular postal hours.

Her goals include finishing road projects that have begun on several streets and finding funds to reRick Peck place sidewalks on Main Street without imposing any taxes.

Peck has said new sidewalks were among his priorities. He has said he wants to make sure the center of town is easily accessible by sidewalk, which he said in turn would create a better sense of community. Peck’s other priority included operating the village in a financially responsible manner.

Aldermen reflect on election losses

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fourth Ward Alderman James Volk had little to say Wednesday after losing in his re-election bid to Batavia MainStreet board member Jamie Saam on Tuesday.

“Jamie got more voters than I did,” Volk said Wednesday. “Eighteen years is enough.”

Eighteen years is how long Volk has been on the Batavia City Council. According to unofficial results, Saam defeated Volk, 133 votes to 81 votes. Saam previously ran for the Batavia City Council in 2011.

mission member Steve Vasilion won over Frydendall, who has been on the Batavia City Council for 32 years, by 436 votes to 163 votes.

In the three-way race for 6th Ward, Nick Cerone received 368 votes, Liva received 208 votes, and Ron Rechenmacher received 100 votes. Liva has been on the Batavia City Council for eight years.

“I’ve had a tremendous 32 years on the Batavia City Council, and I’m very happy with what I accomplished,” Frydendall said. “I hope the

newcomers are going to blend in with the group there and truly do what’s best for the citizens of James Batavia.”

Geary: ‘I held my head high’ Bad feelings remain in village president race

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – An election campaign fraught with contention ended Tuesday with Sean Michels re-elected for a fourth term as Sugar Grove’s village president.

Challenger Kevin Geary, Sean a l t h o u g h d e - Michels feated, still is on the Village Board for two more years. Michels said Geary has fences to mend and apologizing to do to him

and fellow trustees.

“The ball’s in Kevin’s court,” Michels said. “I get along with the other trustees. … Kevin is the one that set himself aside. As the outsider, he is going to have to reach out to the other trustees and myself. … I think it’s the only decent thing to do.”

Kevin Geary said Geary he challenged Michels for the top spot and has no reason to be sorry for anything.

“There was nothing said

in the race that people were not already talking about,” Geary said. “I held my head high, confident that what I said was the truth and my whole position is to represent the people.”

So how will they work together? Just fine, both say.

“I have two more years to represent the people as vigorously as I have in the past,” Geary said. “I have no problem serving, absolutely not.”

“We are professionals and will discuss things on a professional level,” Michels said. “These things don’t change.

Despite Michels’ win, Geary said the incumbent did not have a landslide.

Michels received 696 votes to Geary’s 533, a difference of 163 votes in unofficial results.

“There is a large group of citizens who do not like the way he runs the village,” Geary said. “It just happened to be his lucky day.”

Michels said he never claimed to have won by a landslide.

“The majority of the people must have liked the way I ran the village and the way the board gets things done,” Michels said. “And we’re going to continue to move ahead with the same vision we have in the past.”

Museum, garden to open, hold public tours GENEVA – The Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden will open to the public at 1 p.m. May 1.

A donation of $1 a person for the garden and $2 for the museum is appreciated.

ST. CHARLES – LaVerne E. “Andy” Anderson, 85, of St. Charles, passed away peacefully April 9, 2013, at Pine Acres Rehabilitation and Living Center in DeKalb. He was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Muskegon, Mich., the son of Milton and Hazel (nee Baker) Anderson. He was united in marriage to Shirley VanDenbout on Dec. 28, 1946.

He grew up in Muskegon. He proudly served his country in the Navy at the end of World War II. He graduated from DeVry University in Chicago with a degree in electronics and maintenance. He worked at Western Electric in Cicero for 35 years.

After retirement, he and his wife built their dream cottage in Michigan on Upper Silver Lake. He loved to travel with his family, having been to all 50 states. Every year was a different trip to a different destination. He always kept himself busy with projects, which he termed “puttering around.” He loved playing Santa Claus for his grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Lawrence “Larry” (Patricia) Anderson, Robert “Bob” (Terry) Anderson, Lindsey (Shirley) Anderson, Gayle (Ken) Clegg and Valerie (Mike) Bailey; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Ann “Annie” (Calvin) McLaughlin; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; a son, Keith Anderson; two granddaughters, Wendy and Tamara “Tammy” Anderson; a brother, Milton “Allen” Anderson; and two daughters-in-law, Robin Anderson and Ruth Anderson.

A memorial service will be at a later date with interment in Oak Hill

TIGARD, Ore. – Katherine (Kate) was born to Elmer and Emma Engleman in East St Louis. She and

husband, Tony Reed, who preceded her in death, lived in Batavia from 1950 until Katherine moved to Oregon in 2001.

Katherine was an elementary school teacher in the Batavia Public Schools for more than 30 years. Her philosophy of life led her to continuous learning, playing and helping others. She had served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and her Methodist church (Batavia and Tigard, Ore.), mentored a high school student and, along with her husband, had served as a parent to a Swedish foreign exchange student for a year.

Katherine loved watching sports and had been personally active all her life in swimming, golf, bridge, cooking, knitting, quilting and sewing. Her most recent activities had been writing her memoirs, watching the stock market and mastering the computer. Katherine’s travels took her to Egypt, China, Europe, Mexico, Canada and many parts of the U.S. Katherine is survived by her son, Thomas (Patricia) Reed of Hinsdale; daughter, Martina (Marvin) Bowman of Tigard, Ore.; grandchildren, Abigail and Matthew Bowman; and three nieces, two nephews and their families.

Katherine’s brother, Byron, predeceased her during her childhood.

Katherine will be remembered for her spunk, wit and perseverance.

Her favorite saying was, “Do your best with what you’ve got,” and she truly meant it. A celebration of Katherine’s life is pending at the Tigard, Ore., United Methodist Church.

AURORA – Anthony Tinerella, a 1984 Marmion graduate, will take over as the next headmaster at Marmion Academy, effective July 1.

Tinerella will fill the position currently held by James Quaid, who has accepted the p o s i t i o n o f Anthony p r i n c i p a l a t Tinerella Gordon Tech College Prep on Chicago’s north side, according to a news release issued by Marmion. Tinerella holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in education and administration from North Central College.

“I am confident that Mr. Tinerella will continue and build upon the work that Dr. Quaid has done during

these past two years in order to strengthen the educational mission of Marmion Academy in the coming years,” Abbot John Brahill, Marmion Academy president, said in a news release.

Tinerella said he is “honored and humbled by Abbot John’s decision to name me Headmaster of the Academy. This institution holds a very special place in my heart and I look forward to this incredible opportunity.”

He has an extensive history at Marmion Academy, which began in 1990 when he returned to his alma mater as a teacher and athletic coach. Some of his duties included teaching physics and biology and serving as science department chair, varsity head football coach, assistant dean of students and dean of students.

In 2009, Tinerella was hired as principal of Guerin College Preparatory High School.

Burns has had other political aspirations. He sought the Republican nomination for the 14th Congressional District in 2007, but Burns withdrew when former Speaker Dennis Hastert endorsed Jim Oberweis.

Last year, Burns sought the GOP nomination for County Board chairman, but he lost to former State Sen. Chris Lauzen, who went on to win in the general election.

“In some respects, the greatest gifts are your wishes not coming true,” Burns said. “You travel world over to find what you want, and you return home to discover what you need.”

Carreiro gets in After Carreiro was removed from the ballot for not having enough valid signatures, he filed as a write-in candidate. So did Debbie Draus, vice president of Fagans Inc. in Geneva, and former township highway commissioner John Carlson.

Carlson got 83 votes. Draus got 138. Carreiro tallied 139 votes.

“Thank you to everyone in

the community,” Carreiro said.

“I’m excited about getting involved.”

Draus said she was disappointed, but the results might change over the next two weeks when absentee ballots come in.

“Earlier in the evening, it looked like a done deal,” Draus said. “But I know of absentee votes that are still coming in with my name on them.”

Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said Geneva has 23 absentee ballots that have not been received.

“Any absentee ballot postmarked on Election Day or before, we will honor in the 14 days after the election,” Cunningham said. “It could affect the race.”

Spelling the names of writein candidates does not have to be perfect, Cunningham said, because courts have decided voter intent is what matters.

“If it’s close enough to the name, the judges would allow that to be counted,” Cunningham said.

Robert Kovacs – the Geneva Township trustee whose objection to Carreiro’s nominating petitions removed him from the ballot – was not re-elected.

Kovacs said he did not regret challenging Carreiro’s signatures, saying the result of three candidates running still left the choice to voters instead of an unchallenged candidate.

“I let the voters decide,” Kovacs said. “I did my job for the

township. … I have one more meeting to attend, and then my political career is at an end.”

Moffat’s journey Moffat started out with aspirations for three ballots, Geneva School District 304 board, Geneva Park Board and Geneva Library Board.

A retired an air traffic controller and having served 22 years on the Geneva Plan Commission, Moffat said he could have served all three well.

A decision from the Illinois Attorney General determined that serving on a school and park board would be incompatible, which prompted him

to withdraw from the school board race.

Winning one post, he said, was just fine.

“I am very enthused about the fact that the voters will allow me to continue to show my passion toward public service to the residents of Geneva,” Moffat said.

GENEVA – A lawsuit between two North Aurora neighbors over a hidden camera was dismissed Wednesday without prejudice, which means the suit can be re-filed.

David and Katerina Speers filed the suit in December against Scott and Teresa Thompson and their 16-yearold son, whom the Speers previously had hired as their baby sitter.

The suit states Nov. 17, David Speers found a mini wireless color camera in his master bedroom. The camera had a microphone “capable of transmitting images and sounds,” the suit states. The suit seeks more than $50,000 in damages, and the Speers have obtained orders of protection against the teen.

Judge Edward Schreiber dismissed both counts of the lawsuit without prejudice, saying the plaintiff’s attorney failed to provide specific facts and damages.

“You don’t allege that private facts were recorded, that private facts were viewed or that private facts were broadcast,” Schreiber said.

Attorney Kelly Bennett, who represents Teresa and Scott Thompson and their son, argued that there’s no allegation in the lawsuit

that suggests any images or sounds had been captured on the recording device. He said his cellphone is capable of recording audio and video, but it doesn’t record at all times.

“It’s no different than finding an iPhone or a cellphone in their bedroom,” he said.

Attorney Michael Funkey, who represents plaintiffs David and Katrina Speers, said the boy intruded into a private area of the home that he understood was off-limits and placed the device in the master bedroom.

“I think you have an expectation of privacy in your own bedroom,” he said.

Schreiber said the fact that the device was capable of recording was insufficient, adding that the suit would have to allege that the device captured some kind of private acts.

“It’s not an actionable offense the way you have pled it,” Schrieber said, adding that Funkey also did not state how the Speers were injured.

A portion of the lawsuit also alleges that the Thompsons failed to supervise their son’s use of the camera and receiver, and didn’t stop him from locating the camera in their house. Schreiber dismissed that portion of the suit without prejudice, as well.

The matter is due back in court June 4 for status on pleads.

Board denies liquor license for Blackjack’s

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com The sale of the legally troubled Blackjack’s Gentleman’s Club has encountered an obstacle after the County Board narrowly denied its prospective new owners a liquor license.

Tuesday, the County Board voted 11-10 to deny a request from DD & SS Inc., of Chicago, for a liquor license for the strip club on Route 25 in St. Charles Township near South Elgin.

DD & SS Inc. is a corporate entity managed by Deborah Diaz and Seif El Sharif, owners of other strip clubs.

Diaz said she and El Sharif, through DD & SS Inc., had reached a purchase agreement with the current owners of Blackjack’s – father and son team Dominic Buttitta of South Barrington and Anthony Buttitta of St. Charles – to transfer ownership of the strip club.

But the sale, Diaz said, is contingent on obtaining a liquor license from the county.

Blackjack’s lost its liquor license last year when the Buttittas pleaded guilty to federal charges of tax fraud and operating an illegal gambling business. They have been sentenced to prison.

But Diaz said the Buttittas have continued to operate the business, resulting in the completion of a purchase agreement with her company in May 2012.

She estimated the establishment could generate more than 200 new jobs, primarily in the form of more “self-employed entertainers,” and large amounts of taxes and fees.

“The county, the state and the federal governments will lose a lot of money without a liquor license here,” Diaz said.

County Board members, however, disputed whether the county should desire to allow Blackjack’s to continue.

County Board member John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, noted the location had hosted a restaurant in the past.

While the county’s hands were tied in the past when renewing Blackjack’s liquor license, because the club was an existing business with a license, Hoscheit said the county could be free now to evaluate the business based on its intended use of the site.

He said financial reports provided by Diaz indicate the business has suffered since the loss of the liquor license.

“Operations are not doing well,” Hoscheit said. “It’s unlikely to continue to be operated without alcohol.”

Others on the board, however, worried the owners could opt, without the restrictions of liquor laws, to open the strip club to people under the age of 21, or that the County Board was not using the proper legal standards in evaluating the new owners’ liquor license request.

OPINIONS Lots of planning goes into high school prom I’ve talked a lot about graduation recently, and that’s probably because graduating high school is a momentous event that I’ve been building up to for years. But there is another event that’s looming toward us, coming faster and faster, the subject of so many conversations and over-dramatic tweets – prom.

This year’s prom is May 4, but it’s already taking Geneva High School by storm. See, you can’t just decide to go to prom on the 3rd and mosey on in to the Museum of Science and Industry the next day. You need tickets. You need a group for pictures. You need to get on a bus with your friends. You need to have after-prom plans.

Some people say that you need a date, but you really don’t. I talked to a girl from my French class who went solo last year, and she said that she still had the time of her life, and doesn’t want to be weighed down by someone else again this year. Plus, a date brings drama. I had a very lengthy, late-night discussion with a friend of mine who was debating whether or not she should let her potential date’s friend tell her that it was OK to ask her. The issue is that she really doesn’t like the guy, but he’s nice and she would feel bad saying no. If this situation seems ridiculous, it’s not the most ridiculous that I’ve heard.

One boy wanted to ask a girl, but she was asked by someone else before him, so he set his sights on her sister, only to be disappointed by the fact that she was a freshman.

Fortunately, I had a very-drama free prom proposal. My friend Luca asked me to prom via an adorable YouTube video, which he linked to my Facebook, and I watched on my phone in the Gander Mountain parking lot. Luca is a very good

VIEWS Courtney Phelan friend of mine and I trust him, so I’m glad that I have a date that won’t ditch me, or try to convince me to go out drinking afterward.

I don’t have my dress yet, but that could be a whole extra three columns. I generally don’t like strapless because of my swimmer’s shoulders and their tendency to fall down, but at the same time, I don’t want to look like I’m attending my grandmother’s prom. I’m a big fan of sparkles and glitter, but those make dresses expensive.

I’m also a big fan of ball gownstyle dresses, because if I’m going to shell out about $100 for tickets, I better look like a princess. (For the record, I’m refusing to let my date pay for me. I am an independent young woman.)

I’m sure that I’ll find a dress somehow, with all the department stores, boutiques, prom dress websites, and fashion designers in Paris and Milan reading this column.

The school’s main concern, of course, is safety. They’ve seen the movies, heard the stories, and – of course – went to their own prom. I urge anyone reading this to think about their prom night decisions and rethink them if they could end in life-altering consequences. Everyone has put a lot of thought and work into having the perfect night, so make it perfect by making it out alive.

Why dictators fear laughter

By SRDJA POPOVIC and MLADEN JOKSIC Revolutions are serious business. Just recall the grumpy faces of 20th-century revolutionaries such as Lenin, Mao, Fidel and Che. But fast-forward to the protests of the 21st century, and you see a new form of activism at work. The ominous scowls of revolutions past are replaced by humor and satire. Today’s non-violent activists are inciting a global shift in protest tactics away from anger, resentment and rage toward a new, more incisive form of activism rooted in fun – “laughtivism.”

Just take the Middle East and North Africa, where non-violent protesters are using laughter and wit to embolden their calls for democracy. In Tunisia, in January 2011, at the height of the protests against Ben Ali, a lone man – later immortalized as the super-hero Captain Khobza (bread) – fought off Ben Ali loyalists armed with a sharp wit and a French baguette. In Egypt, an outlandish video portraying Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi as Super Mario made the rounds on YouTube this March. And in case anyone needed reminding, the political relevance of comedians in the Middle East was recently brought home by the Egyptian government’s decision to raise criminal charges against the talk-show host Bassem Youssef (the man often described as “Egypt’s Jon Stewart”).

The move by the government of Mohammed Morsi attested to the capacity of humor to discomfit the powers that be.

But the strategic use of humor isn’t confined to the Middle East and North Africa alone. In the United States, Occupy Wall Street protesters regularly used humor to mock corporate America. Who can forget the ridiculous-looking protesters who, dressed as rodeo clowns and a matador, tamed Wall Street’s legendary bull statue?

There is a reason why humor is infusing the arsenal of the 21st-century protester.

It works. For one, humor breaks fear and builds confidence. It also adds a necessary cool factor, which helps movements attract new members. Finally, humor can incite clumsy reactions from a movement’s opponents. The best acts of laughtivism force their targets into lose-lose scenarios, undermining the credibility of a regime no matter how they respond. These acts move beyond mere pranks; they help corrode the very mortar that keeps most dictators in place: Fear.

U.S. Postal Service won’t be allowed to cut Saturday delivery

By ANGELA GREILING KEANE Bloomberg News Service WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service doesn’t have legal authority to end Saturday mail delivery without authorization from Congress and must halt plans to take that step in August, its board said Wednesday.

The board’s action follows a Government Accountability Office opinion last month saying the service didn’t have the authority to stop Saturday deliveries, a move officials said would save about $2 billion annually.

The service, which lost $15.9 billion last year, may be left with few options to quickly cut costs. Congress hasn’t passed legislation to relax a requirement that the service pay now for future retirees’ health-care costs, which the service says it can’t afford. It also hasn’t allowed the service to accelerate closings of rural post offices.

“The board believes that Congress has left it with no choice but to delay this implementation at this time,” the

board, which said it supports cutting Saturday delivery when allowed to do so, said in an emailed statement.

“The board also wants to ensure that customers of the Postal Service are not unduly burdened by ongoing uncertainties and are able to adjust their business plans accordingly.”

The panel directed service management to find other ways to lower labor costs, including by seeking to reopen contract negotiations with its unions.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has said he relied on a new interpretation of a law governing the service, based on the fact the government is operating with temporary funding, to declare he didn’t need Congress’s permission to reduce letter delivery to five days a week.

He will obey the board’s decision and try to cut costs in other ways and raise revenue, said Postal Service spokesman David Partenheimer.

“Both the board and the postmaster general have

made it very clear that the status quo is not an option,” he said. “It’s critical that Congress introduce and pass comprehensive postal legislation to enable the Postal Service to return to long-term financial stability.”

Commercial customers are happy to have some certainty to plan mailings for later this year, said Jerry Cerasale, senior vice president of government affairs for the Direct Marketing Association, based in New York.

The association doesn’t have an opinion on cutting Saturday delivery because its members don’t agree, he said, suggesting closing facilities as a way to cut costs. ‘’The Postal Service still has excess capacity, a lot of processing plants that are going to be scheduled to close,” Cerasale said. “They can speed that up and get a lot of capacity out of the system.”

Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican who backed the service on its interpretation, said he’s “disappointed” the service is backing away from its plans.

Once upon a time ...

Award-winning storyteller, musician coming to St. Charles Literature Festival

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Storytelling will be in the spotlight next week in St. Charles during “Get Connected: The 2013 Elementary Literature Festival.”

As part of the festival, several prominent authors will be visiting St. Charles elementary schools. In addition, Grammy Award winner Bill Harley is among the storytellers that will perform April 18 as part of The Storytellers Olio, which will also feature three other well-known storytellers – Linda Gorham, Sue Black and Marcia Gutierrez.

Harley will perform at 7 p.m. April 18 at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The Storytellers Olio is being presented by the St. Charles Public Library and Onesti Entertainment Corporation in cooperation with the St. Charles School District’s community-wide St. Charles Literature Festival.

The program, which is free, will also feature pipe organ music performed by Deborah Ayotte.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Harley about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: I know you’ve done a number of appearances over the years. Does it mean even more to you being part of a literature festival?

Bill Harley: A lot of my work is me out by myself, so coming to a place where there are other people doing similar work is fun.

ES: How do you try to keep stories interesting, especially to kids?

BH: The story really needs to be relevant to their lives.

An investment is required on the part of the storyteller.

They have to be passionate about the story.

They are telling the story as much for themselves as they are for the audience. Part of my life’s work is to try to see things through a kid’s eye.

ES: Why do you still like doing this?

BH: There’s nothing like a good show in front of an audience. There’s a lot of aspects of it that you get tired of, like traveling in airplanes or sleeping in hotel rooms, and things like that.

I think if you are always trying to develop new material, and if you are trying to connect with your audience and giving them the respect

they deserve, it’s rejuvenating.

ES: You’ve been called “the Mark Twain of contemporary children’s music.” Do you think that’s fitting?

BH: I don’t give myself titles. I think that humor is very much a part of my work.

I try to look at childhood not through rose-colored glasses. I try to present it as honestly as I can.

Those are two things I know that Mark Twain did.

Now, it’s not my job to judge whether I’m doing it as well as he did, and I’m pretty sure I’m not. But it’s something to work toward.

ES: Do you think his work can provide life lessons even today?

BH: I think his observations

of the human condition are completely right. The other thing about Mark Twain is that he was a very good storyteller. He probably made as much money performing as he did selling books.

As a matter of fact, I came across one of his essays on how to tell a ghost story.

In order for Water Street to receive the grant, it must land a spot among the top 40 nonprofit finalists – out of 200 – decided by votes cast by the public.

The 200 finalists were selected by State Farm Neighborhood Assist, a youth-led philanthropic program that empowers communities to identify issues in their neighborhood.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist received more than 3,000 submissions, and narrowed the list to 200 finalists, from which 40 will be selected, according to a news release.

According to the release, Water Street Studios’ Art Flow program allows creativity, collaboration, expres-

sion and education by providing free art education to students and women who have financial need or who are under-served in the community. Art Flow artists teach at shelters, low-income housing, organizations and Water Street Studios.

With additional funding from the grant, Water Street will be able to expand Art Flow through advanced art instruction in printmaking, photography, digital art, ceramics and metal work.

Water Street has until April 22

to rally votes. The top 40 vote-receiving causes will be announced April 29 via the State Farm Facebook app, and a $25,000 grant will be awarded to the nonprofits.

North senior to follow in footsteps of father, uncle

Whether the gathering gave Edlund a subliminal push to choose Augustana as his college football destination is uncertain.

Either way, Edlund will be the newest family member to deepen the clan’s rich heritage in Rock Island.

Edlund’s parents, Dave and Kassiani, met as seniors George at Augustana, Edlund where Dave was a three-year starter at safety for the Vikings’ football team. Edlund’s uncle, Mitch, was a basketball standout at Augustana.

“It will be something to talk about at the dinner table come Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Edlund said.

“It’s just a cool experience to be a part of that. I get to play where they played at.”

Edlund had an extensive Augustana chat with two of his dad’s former teammates at a get-together before Easter.

It wasn’t long after that when Edlund picked Augustana over some of his other leading options such as Lake Forest, Knox and St. Norbert (Wis.).

“I got all the financial aid packages from my top three I was waiting for, and then I just sat down – I wanted to make the decision by myself,” Edlund said. “Both my parents went to Augustana but I didn’t want any

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Edlund rushed for 745 yards and eight touchdowns on 143 carries as a senior for the North Stars.

He’ll join St. Charles North graduate Ben Hodges – with whom Edlund once shared a backfield during two-a-days at North – in the Vikings’ program.

Edlund, who is running sprints for the North Stars’ track team this spring, is planning to study secondary education and history at Augustana.

His father didn’t have academics figured out quite

so tidily – at least not early in his college career. Dave Edlund said football inspired him to stick it out as a college student.

“Football kept me in college, and I’m thankful it was there for me and helped me continue on until I learned how to become a better student,” Dave Edlund said.

Dave Edlund said Kassiani “hated sports” after coming to the U.S. from Greece, so the two had different social circles throughout most of their time at Augustana.

More than two decades later, her outlook has changed, at least as George and his two brothers are concerned.

“We have three boys who all participate in sports,” Dave Edlund said. “She loves football. She worries to death about him but she loves watching the game of football, with her kids playing.”

Dave Edlund played for the Vikings between 1988 and 91. He has some memorabilia from his career but said it’s mostly “stowed away.”

“They’re not out there anywhere too much, by any means,” Dave Edlund said.

“But back then they didn’t give you anything. Today, I think kids get a little more stuff than we used to get back then. Like I told the kids, I wore the same pair of two cleats I bought for four years.”

Another change between father and son’s eras of Augustana football – ground breaking for a new football stadium took place at Augustana in October.

The Vikings are coming off a 5-5 season and compete in the Division-III College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

Turnstile report Tuesday’s crowd of 3,801 pushed the Cougars’ season total to 19,385 fans in seven dates.

Kane County attracted 26,935 fans through that period last season.

Sight seen After the last of the area school children left in the seventh, three diehard fans remained to brave the weather and bad Kane County defense. The early start, 50 minute rain-delay and cold weather played a role in dampening enthusiasm late.

Cubs brass will be excited because Kane County first baseman/ designated hitter platoon partners Dan Vogelbach and Rock Shoulders continue their torrid starts to the season. Vogelbach singled, walked and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Shoulders singled twice on the afternoon.

Cubs brass will cringe because Cougars starter Tayler Scott followed up his first outing with one to forget against Clinton, lasting just two innings. The South African native exited in the third after loading the bases on three walks. Scott finished with five walks and allowed four earned runs. He was also hit on the elbow but should be ready to go for his next start.

The closer The Cougars sat around and waited 50 minutes for Wednesday’s game to start. They might be waiting in their hotel rooms a lot longer in the next couple of days as snow is in the forecast in Wisconsin. Stay tuned.

Cougars drop finale to LumberKings

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Cougars starting pitcher Tayler Scott refused to place the blame of his rough outing on anyone but himself.

No one would have blamed the 2012 fifth-round pick if he had. A 50-minute rain delay preceded Scott’s second start of the year and the weather didn’t get much better after that. A stiff wind and constant blowing rain made life tough on the South African-born right-hander, who took the loss Wednesday as Kane County dropped the final game of the series against Clinton, 10-4.

“It’s just one of those Tayler Scott days that you have to fight [the weather] and adjust the best you can,” Scott said. “I was trying to keep warm as best I could and move around a lot in between innings.”

Scott, a fifth-round draft choice by the Cubs in 2012, was solid in his first outing of the year, earning a no-decision in five innings against Quad Cities.

The main contrast in Scott’s first start was the walks – there were none. On Wednesday, Scott was unable to locate his two-seam fastball, running into trouble in the third.

After giving up a two-run single to Tyler Marlette in the second, Scott walked the first three batters in the third to force Kane County manager Mark Johnson’s hand.

Scott was struck on his throwing elbow in the first on a one-hopper off the bat of Dario Pizzano.

Coupled with the cold, it made for a tough day for the young pitcher.

“It could be a number of different things. He hasn’t pitched in the cold weather a lot – and I’m not making excuses for him,” Johnson said.

his elbow. That’s just more of a muscular thing. He’s fine.”

Cougars reliever Nathan Dorris struck out Jabari Harris looking before Taylor Ard knocked in two runs that gave the LumberKings a 4-0 lead.

Dorris held Clinton at bay after taking over for Scott in the third. After giving up the RBI hit to Ard, Dorris held the LumberKings hitless over the next four innings, which allowed the Cougars to come back.

Dan Vogelbach got the Cougars on the board in the fifth with a sacrifice fly that scored Wes Darvill, who tripled.

An inning later, Trey Martin, who came in hitting .077, hit a double down the leftfield line to score Chadd Krist and Bijan Rademacher to cut Clinton’s lead to 4-3.

That was as close as Kane County would get, though, as Clinton batted around in the seventh off Cougars reliever Stephen Perakslis.

Kane County left 11 runners on base while walking 10 Clinton hitters in the loss.

Despite the loss, Johnson was upbeat about how his team fought back in tough conditions.

“I thought we had a chance there when we got within one but we gave it right back,” Johnson said. “On a day like this when it’s cold, you fight back and all of a sudden you give them a couple of runs back, it’s kind of hard to bounce back.”

Vogelbach and Rock Shoulders continued their hot starts at the plate. Vogelbach went 1 for 3 with a walk and RBI while Shoulders added a pair of hits, but saw his average drop to .467.

Clinton starter Scott DeCecco picked up the win, working five innings and allowing just five hits and one run.

AURORA – The Rosary girls soccer team turned the tables on West Aurora on Wednesday.

Quincy Kellett and Kaitlin Johnson each scored two goals with an assist to lead the Royals to a 6-2 rout of the host Blackhawks in a match that decided the championship of the West Aurora tournament.

Rosary (5-1-2) finished the four-team round-robin tourney with a 2-0-1 record, while West Aurora wound up 2-1.

Kaneland defeated East Aurora, 2-0, to take third place.

The Royals had re v e n g e o n Quincy Kellett their minds because the Blackhawks beat them last year en route to winning the Rosary tournament.

“Our coach Kaitlin Johnson kept telling us that last year they played us in our tournament and they beat us,” Kellett said. “So she said if we beat them today in their tournament it will be like revenge. We played hard at the beginning. We played 10 minutes of great soccer in the first half.”

The Royals grabbed an early 2-0 lead by scoring twice in a 33-second span.

Kellett streaked down the right wing and scored on a breakaway with 34:05 to go in the first half. The sophomore star then set up the second goal with a perfect cross from deep in the right corner that found the head of the unguarded Johnson in front.

Johnson, a Michigan State signee, scored easily on a header. The first goal of the season for Johnson was scored in ironic fashion as

she had missed three games earlier in the season after suffering a concussion.

“We had her up at forward,” Rosary coach Kristy Kane said. “She was a center-mid and you tend to have to head the ball a lot more at that position, but she’s a tough kid. Even though she had the concussion she’s not going to back down and not head the ball into the net if she has the opportunity.”

“She’s a great player,” Kellett said of Johnson. “It really hurt us when she was out.

We both like playing forward together. We always look for each other. We had a lot of fun tonight.”

West Aurora (4-5-1) appeared poised to make a game of it when Sam O’Brien scored on her own rebound with 4:09 left in the half after Rosary goalie Lauren Frasca made a diving stop from point-blank range.

The Royals retaliated 18 seconds later when Kellett scored on a 20-yard shot from a severe angle from just outside the penalty area, lofting a ball into the crosswind that settled inside the left post for a 3-1 Royals lead.

“I thought it was going out,” Kellett said. “I just tried to turn my hips. I have an ankle injury so my ankle is taped up, so I was just trying to keep the ball in and maybe get a play in front of the goal.”

The Royals made plenty of plays in the match. Olivia Cozzoni scored off an assist from Johnson at the 30:48 mark of the second half and 10 minutes later Kellett assisted on Johnson’s second goal to make it 5-1.

Daniela Bueno scored for West Aurora before Rosary’s Taylor Gibson finished the scoring off a feed from Molly Piech with 5:17 to go.

“They just outplayed us,” said West Aurora coach Laura Wagley, whose team was trying to win the tournament for the second straight year.

Russell twins still winning big together ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs The Blackhawks opened this NHL season by getting at least a point in a record 24 straight games, the Miami Heat won 27 straight NBA games this year, and Louisville just claimed the NCAA men’s basketball title after winning its last 16 games.

But twin sisters from St. Charles are part of what might be the nation’s most impressive current winning streak.

St. Charles North grads Sydney and Taylor Russell are sophomores on a University of Sydney Russell Indianapolis softball team which has won 27 straight games. The Greyhounds (34-2) are ranked first in the latest NCAA DiviTaylor Russell sion II softball rankings.

“We’re No. 1 in the nation right now,” Taylor said. “I feel like we’re just coming together as a team and we have all the talent in the world right now.”

That talent includes the Russell twins, both key members of the squad. Taylor has started all 36 games for Indianapolis and is hitting .364 with five home runs and 25 RBIs. Sydney has played in 19 games and has a homer and nine RBIs. Taylor started 33 games at first base and 13 in either left or right field as a freshman and hit .291 with two homers.

Splitting time between second base and right field last season, Sydney hit .384 and was named First Team All-Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and First Team AllGreat Lakes Valley Conference.

“We were really good last year,” Sydney said. “We just didn’t quite get the job done at the end of the season. …

We were expecting to come back strong this year and work our way back to the top.”

The Greyhounds were ranked 15th in the nation in a preseason poll, but have steadily climbed the rankings with the help of the winning streak, which began Feb. 23 with an 8-0 victory at North Alabama. Most of the games have not been close, with Indianapolis winning by an average score of 7-1.

That statistic comes as no surprise to Taylor, who says the Greyhounds’ success starts with four solid pitchers.

“All of them can get the job done,” she says. “[Then] we have hitters one through nine in the lineup.”

Taylor started out the season on a tear at the plate, hitting over .500 in the first 14 games with two homers.

That sort of production is nothing new for her. She had four hits and five RBIs in the 2011 IHSA Class 4A state championship game, which North lost to Moline, 9-8. Her

performance throughout the season and at the state tournament made her a consensus first-team all-state selection.

Sydney also turned in an impressive prep career, earning three first-team all-con-

ference honors and batting .411 as a senior.

Either Russell might have filled a need at an NCAA Division I school, but the duo refused to be separated.

“We wanted to go together and Indianapolis allowed

that, so that’s why we chose Indianapolis,” Sydney said.

“We looked at Indianapolis and Indiana in general, since my mom grew up here.”

The two spurned offers from Winona State, Upper Iowa and Wisconsin-Whitewater, among others.

Both say they’re happy they chose Indianapolis.

“It’s awesome,” Taylor said. “We share an apartment together. If there’s a bad day, I always have someone I can turn to and I can trust.”

Although they are not identical twins, Sydney said the bond between them is very strong.

“We may look different, but we’re really similar in personality,” she said.

“When things are tough, I have her here to push me. … It’s really great to have Taylor by my side.”

Cleaning up defense Cougars’ focus GENEVA – Quad Cities outscored the Cougars, 2714, in a four-game sweep to open the season.

No doubt that tally got the clubhouse stirring, although an equally impactful count was the River Bandits’ edge in fewer errors: three to Kane County’s seven.

After recording six errors in their first two games, the Cougars committed errors three times in their next four games entering Wednesday. While completely emulating the opposition wasn’t advisable – Quad Cities struck out 41 times in the series – it proved an effective proposition in a limited case.

“The first couple games, we didn’t take care of the ball at all. Kind of clumsy and dropping balls and not throwing the ball and not hitting cutoff guys. You name it, we kind of were sloppy,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said.

The parent Cubs’ organization recently recognized Chadd Krist as the top defensive catcher in the system. Fellow backstop Willson Contreras shifted from third base to catcher last season and pared his errors from 23 in 2011 to eight in 2012.

Good or bad, defense projects as a season-long talking point. The Cougars hope an offseason premium on glovework keeps that chatter positive.

“We’re working on it,” Rademacher said. “That’s something we really worked on in spring training was getting better collectively as a group with team defense.”

Castillo clicks early: Righthander Lendy Castillo contributed another strong

outing to the early starting pitching annals with Monday’s five-inning no-decision, limiting Clinton to one run and three hits.

A converted infielder who opened last season as a Cubs reliever, Castillo brings a good talent base as the organization aims to mold him into a major leaguer with staying power.

“Lendy, when he lets it go, he gets after it. He gives himself a chance every pitch,” Cougars pitching coach Ron Villone said.

“Knowing that he hasn’t been pitching a whole lot, a whole long time, we’re here to work on some things.

But [Monday] showed that he knows how to minimize damage, he’s got some good poise on the mound. His stuff speaks for itself. But first outing, I approve.”

Timberlake, Staples and more bring sounds of soul to the White House

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post WASHINGTON – Justin Timberlake’s campaign to charm the universe in its entirety breezed Tuesday through the White House, where he laughed, made others laugh harder, confessed to stalking the Rev. Al Green and pontificated on the greater spiritual properties of music itself.

“It’s seven to eight minutes,” Timberlake said of the driving distance between his childhood home and Green’s.

“Some might call that stalking. I just call it driving by to see ... where he lived.”

The 32-year-old Memphis-born omnipresence was chatting with a group of students in the State Dining Room on Tuesday afternoon in the hours before “In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul,” a concert that would include artists such as Mavis Staples, Sam Moore, Charlie Musselwhite and Ben Harper.

First lady Michelle Obama – graceful even with her spring sniffles – welcomed students to a panel discussion with a sampling of the evening’s talent and recounted the historic ascent of various Memphis soul royals, including “somebody my husband thinks he sounds like, the Reverend Al Green.

Let’s just tell him he does, OK?” (Green was scheduled to perform in the evening but canceled because of a back injury.)

The concert would be the 10th of its kind since President Obama took office in 2009, each celebrating American music as a sonic metaphor for the collision of cultures that has defined our nation. And few genres capture that collision like soul music, the fantastic result of blues rubbing up against gospel, blurring the line between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Staples explained it to the kids best: “Rather than sayin’ ‘Jesus,’ you’re sayin’ ‘baby.’ “ “Jesus was a baby first,” Timberlake added.

“He was!” Staples said. “My baby left me!” – then, singing the same melody – “Jesus is with me!”

“In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul” airs at 10 p.m. April 16 on WTTW-TV. Timberlake twisted with laughter while his right hand clutched the back of Staples’s chair. The 73-year-old soul icon – who remains giant in voice but can’t be much taller than 5 feet – had struggled to reach the top of her stool at the beginning of the program. Timberlake steadied her for the rest of it.

So, yes, this is a man who will do everything in his earthly power to win over a modest gathering of schoolchildren, but now we have hard evidence that he is a kind and conscientious human being, too.

When organizers passed the microphone over to students, you can guess who fielded the bulk of the questions.

Timberlake advised anyone pursuing music to nurture the instinctual (“You can’t worry about who likes it and who doesn’t”), welcome strange influences (“Keep your satellites open”) and embrace the rare freedom of it all (“There really are no rules to it!”).

The concert’s producers yanked Timberlake out of the workshop before he had a chance to sing, but Moore had done a fine job earlier with the Sam and Dave classic “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” crooning softly while the audience clapped along fiercely.

Later, Moore stepped out onto the North Portico to chat with reporters, seeming a touch nervous about the duties ahead of him.

Of all the evening’s acts – which also included Memphis luminaries Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper, rapper-singer Queen Latifah, “American Idol” survivor Joshua Ledet and new-wave-singer-reborn-as-Memphisblues woman (really!) Cyndi Lauper – Moore would be up first, after the president’s opening remarks.

“I’ve never had a president to introduce me,” Moore said. “I’m like, ‘Oh my God ... don’t forget the words.’”

William Bell, the Memphis vet who had been rehearsing his 1961 Stax Records hit “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” seemed far less ruffled. To him, the rehearsal Tuesday was just a reunion of old pals.

“It’s a wonderful thing,” Bell said.

“Cats are playing catch-up.”

And with that, Timberlake was, at best, the second-coolest guy in the building.

Dear Unpierced: I spoke to James Wisniewski of the Body Electric Tattoo piercing studio in Los Angeles. He told me that, as with any type of body modification, the ear plugs are a matter of personal taste.

The process is referred to as “stretching,” and James has had his earlobes this way for the past 14 years. He says he is asked about the procedure on a daily basis. He is attracted to it for the aesthetics. The modification is a gradual process, with larger jewelry being inserted as the hole becomes larger.

Dietary changes bring relief from gastroparesis Dear Doctor K: A friend has a condition called gastroparesis.

Could you explain what it is and how it can be treated?

Dear Reader: Gastroparesis is the term used for sluggish emptying of food from the stomach into the small intestine. Normally, your stomach moves about half of an average meal into the small intestine within two hours after you eat. Within four hours, about 90 percent of your meal is in the small intestine. If you have gastroparesis, food stays in the stomach much longer.

Common symptoms include nausea and upper abdominal pain. It may become difficult to keep a full meal down. People with serious cases may eat so little they become dangerously thin and malnourished.

Gastroparesis has a number of causes, with diabetes topping the list. Diabetes can damage nerves, including the nerves that control stomach function. That nerve damage slows the speed of emptying. Several medications can also slow stomach emptying. These include antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, calcium-channel blockers and opioid painkillers.

Some people develop gastroparesis after recovering from a gastrointestinal viral infection.

One of the first things people can do to help control symptoms is to limit – or even avoid – fatty and fiber-rich foods. Fatty foods delay the emptying of the stomach in all of us, and probably do so even more in people with gastroparesis. This appears to be equally true of “good fats” (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats) as well as “bad fats” (saturated fats and trans fats). For that reason, people with gastroparesis should focus on eating smaller amounts of fats – primarily the good fats, which our bodies need.

Foods rich in non-digestible fiber (typically fruits and vegetables) also exit the stomach more sluggishly than digestible food.

That’s true for all of us. Food that is digested, by stomach acid and other substances, is broken into tiny pieces that more easily leave the stomach. In contrast, non-digestible fiber leaves the stomach only when the stomach muscles push it into the intestine.

Please understand that I’m not advocating that everyone avoid

fiber-rich foods – in fact, they’re good for us. They just cause problems in people with gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis can be reduced in diabetics by keeping blood sugar under good control.

Finally, eating frequent small meals rather than three large ones can help.

Unfortunately, there’s no wonder drug for this condition.

A drug called metoclopramide (Maxolon, Reglan) can be effective. But doctors don’t like to prescribe it at full dosage or for extended periods because it can cause an often irreversible involuntary movement disorder.

Very low doses of erythromycin, an antibiotic, are often prescribed for gastroparesis.

Erythromycin can speed up movement of the stomach.

However, its long-term success is mediocre at best.

Gastric pacemakers are devices that stimulate the stomach to contract. They’ve shown some benefit in clinical trials. For most people with gastroparesis, however, the simpler measures I’ve recommended can bring sufficient relief.

Teen grapples with decision to live with her birth mother Dr. Wallace: My mother and father divorced when I was 6. I am now 13. My parents’ marriage ended because my mother decided she wanted to live with her boss. I stayed with my dad, and we both moved in with his parents – my grandparents. They have been wonderful to me.

My dad was busy working so my grandparents actually became “mom” and “dad.”

Two years ago, my father was killed coming home late from work.

A drunk driver hit my father’s car head on.

He died instantly. The drunk driver died a day later.

After my parents divorced, I still had contact with my mother. We saw each other three or four times a month. After my father died, I saw her about twice a week.

Alcohol, because it is water-soluble, leaves the body within hours.

This would be an excellent time for your boyfriend to stop using marijuana completely and get retested at a later date.

The difficult part of this deal is thinking of the right play. Declarer starts with six top tricks: two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. There are two more tricks available in clubs, assuming a 3-2 break, but one spade winner is also needed.

If South immediately concedes a club trick, West clears hearts and defeats the contract when in with the spade ace. If South leads his spade queen, West wins and establishes his hearts; the contract still fails Instead, because West is marked with the spade ace from his opening bid, South must start with the low spade from his hand. If West goes in with the ace, declarer has nine winners via three spades, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs.

Whereas if West ducks, declarer wins in the dummy and switches to clubs. His nine tricks are one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and four clubs.

Home buyers beware of overpaying for features ZILLOW editorial@kcchronicle.com When a real estate agent sits down with sellers to discuss the value of their home, the conversation inevitably turns to the home’s features – a spectacular view, a cool garage workspace or perhaps a one-of-a-kind garden. While those features might be selling points, the truth is potential buyers may not value them nearly as much as the seller.

Here are two strategies for buyers to avoid spending too much money for home upgrades.

Emotional attachment Don’t get emotionally attached to a property. As the market continues picking up,

stories of multiple offers are everywhere. With such little inventory, buyers are forced to compete for the limited goods.

This competition creates a frenzy, causing some buyers to make an emotional purchase based on their attachment to a potential home, its features or location. This results in a quick increase in home values – what some might call a “bubble.”

Think like a seller

In 2005, a buyer in San Francisco bought a home without a garage. A deeded garage can increase a home’s value in that city by $50,000 or more, but the buyer didn’t see the value in having his own garage. The house was on multiple transit lines, he used his bicycle for transportation, and he knew
