’ve photographed about two dozen election nights in my career, and – every time – I have a mixture of dread and fascination with the night.

There is a lot of “hurry up and wait” as election results come and I try to be at more than one

place at a time. With the digital system that’s been in place the last few years, election results come in much faster than the over four hours I’ve waited in the past.

This past Tuesday, I spent most of my night with Ray

Rogina, as he waited to find out if he would become the next mayor of St. Charles. After just 45 minutes after the polls closed, we had a majority of the results and Rogina had taken a strong lead.

Most of the night, Rogina was

doing laps around the private party room at The Office in St. Charles, talking, laughing and hugging his friends and supporters. I finally saw him sit down once to take phone calls just before he declared victory.

McFadden wins as write-in candidate for Batavia’s 7th Ward

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Newly elected 7th Ward Alderman Drew McFadden is attributing his win as a write-in candidate to conveying to residents his vision for Batavia.

“I gave them confidence I was the right person for the job,” he said.

McFadden was one of the three people running as write-in candidates for the 7th Ward seat on the Batavia City Council. Alderman Dawn Tenuta did not run for re-election, and no one filed a nomination petition for the

7th Ward by the December deadline.

According to unofficial results from the county clerk’s office, McFadden received 63 votes, compared to three votes for Steve Holland and two votes for Pat Purcell.

Drew McFadden is McFadden set to be sworn in early May. McFadden, founder of digital marketing agency WindmillNext, said one of his goals is to continue attracting new businesses to the city’s down-

town and along the Randall Road corridor.

“I think Batavia has a ton to offer to a business that would want to set up here,” he said. “We need to do a better job selling ourselves.”

McFadden said he was happy the Batavia City Council recently voted to make the city’s economic development position a full-time post.

“I think that is a step in the right direction,” he said.

“Having that person in place full time will be a positive step in enhancing the business friendliness of the community.”

Meredith Hannah had

been the city’s economic development analyst since July 2008, but left the part-time post in February.

The city is searching for a new person to hold the post.

ENEVA – Three siblings had a rough start in life. Their mother was a substance abuser and mentally unstable. Their father was in prison for domestic abuse. They were all under 3 years old and each showed signs of physical abuse. That’s when a special CASA volunteer stepped in and helped change the course of their lives. The children have since been adopted by a loving family and are doing well.

At noon Thursday, more than 100 citizens joined hands

for a moment of silence to acknowledge the abused and neglected children in and around the Kane County community. The ninth annual Hands Around the Courthouse event, held in the lobby of Geneva’s Old Courthouse, was organized by CASA – or Court Appointed Special Advocates – of Kane County.

“April is National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month, a time to remember all the children who’ve been victims of neglect or abuse, and for those who may be suffering in silence,” said Gloria Bunce, executive director of CASA Kane County.

Featured at the event was

a heart-wrenching display of 90 pairs of shoes, arranged in the shape of a heart, to represent each Illinois child who died last year as the result of abuse or neglect. Working to prevent such tragedies are 250 active local CASA volunteers.

Bunce, who spoke at the event, believes that – when it comes to children – everyone needs to pay attention when something doesn’t feel right.

“If you suspect something is wrong, call and report it.

You have nothing to lose, but the child has everything to lose,” she said.

Other speakers included Judy Brawka, chief judge

of the 16th Judicial Circuit, Linda Abrahamson, abuse and neglect judge, and Mark Klaisner, assistant superintendent of the Kane County Regional Office of Education, who said, “Our mission is to

rescue one child at a time.”

Elburn woman dead after traffic incident

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – A member of the Gould Cider and Apple Pressing Mill family in Elburn was pronounced dead after a traffic incident Thursday that took place about a mile from her home.

Marilyn Gould, 49, was pronounced dead at approximately 5 a.m., shortly after Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of Green Road south of Main Street in Blackber-

ry Township. The accident occurred near Gould’s residence in the 2S200 block of Green Road in Elburn.

Along with her family, Gould helped run the Gould Cider and Apple Pressing Mill, which has been in the Gould family for six generations, according to information on the business’s website.

Dave Anderson, village president of Elburn, described Gould as a hard worker and a “very, very friendly person.”

St. Charles resident indicted in student sexual assault case

By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com WHEATON – A St. Charles resident and former speech team coach from Wheaton North High School accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with a student has Edward Klemm been indicted by a grand jury, a spokesman for the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Edwin Klemm, 43, of the 1100 block of Howard Street in St. Charles, was arrested March 19 and charged with criminal sexual assault, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Klemm also has taught English at Wheaton North.

Paul Darrah, a spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office, confirmed Thursday that a grand jury indicted Klemm on April 9 on 11 counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony.

His next court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. today for a status hearing, Darrah said.

Officials allege that between February and November 2011, Klemm sexually assaulted a 16-year-old female student multiple times at

various locations, including movie theaters, his vehicle, a classroom and his house while his daughter was home.

The student’s parents contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center after finding a love letter Klemm had allegedly written to the teenager, the release reads.

The center opened an investigation into the accusations.

DuPage County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Sexton set Klemm’s bond at $600,000 in bond court March 20. He remains in DuPage County Jail, according to media reports.

Klemm was suspended without pay by Community Unit School District 200 until the investigation into the allegations against him is complete, district officials said. At that time, the district will review his employment status.

Criminal sexual assault is punishable by four to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. If found guilty of the 11 counts, Klemm would face a minimum of 44 years in prison as the sentences must be served consecutively, officials said.

At his court appearance today, a judge is expected to hear a request to allow cameras in the courtroom, a request prosecutors oppose, according to media reports.

According to a news release, the initial investigation indicates that a Chevy Traverse SUV was traveling south on Green Road and – for an unknown reason – left the road. The vehicle came back onto Green Road and went off the road on its west side. It again came back onto the road, crossed Green Road and came to a rest near a tree on the road’s east side, states

The release also stated that Gould was not wearing a seat belt. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the incident, which appeared to have occurred at some point overnight.

Lt. Pat Gengler, the spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said a passer-by notified police of the incident around 5 a.m.

Gengler said he wasn’t sure how long the investigation would take, as the scene had no witnesses. He said if the Kane County Accident

Reconstruction Team decides to do a full reconstruction, the investigation could take as long as a month. He said deputies are still not sure if Thursday’s rainy weather had anything to do with the incident.

For now, Gengler said, deputies are talking with family members to find out what might have happened.

“When there’s a single-car crash with one person involved, we try to give the family a little more time instead of pushing them for answers right away,” he said.

Man found guilty of aggravated battery

By ERIC SCHELKOPF ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man has been found guilty of severely injuring a man after punching him in the jaw more than three years ago.

A jury Tuesday found Jack R. Gray, 29, of the 700 block of Westfield Drive, St. Charles, guilty of two counts of aggravated battery, each a Jack R. Gray Class 3 felony, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

About 1:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009, outside a tavern in the 200 block of West Main Street in St. Charles, Gray and a friend began to argue with the victim and his friend for an unknown

But officials in those two states have raised questions over the virtual charter school operations, noting participating students’ low test scores, among other issues.

In Illinois, education officials have also cited concerns over a lack of provisions in the state’s charter schools law

that could be applied to such virtual charter schools.

At least 10 of the 18 school boards in the proposed charter school’s area – including Kaneland District 302, St. Charles District 303, Geneva District 304 and Batavia District 101 – have rejected the virtual school proposal. The remaining districts are set to vote on it next week.

Virtual Learning Solutions could appeal those decisions to a state board.

Lawmakers have sought to slow the process down.

State Reps. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, and Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, have signed on as co-sponsors to Chapa LaVia’s legislation, after Chapa LaVia reduced the moratorium to one year and agreed to exempt online learning programs in place in Chicago and other Illinois public schools.

The state lawmakers said they believed time was need-

ed to commission a task force to draft guidelines and suggested legislation to specifically address online charter schools.

“There really aren’t standards for an all-virtual school,” Pritchard said.

Hatcher said allowing online education was intended to give public schools greater access to quality instruction, such as foreign language instruction for rural districts or better science teachers for inner city schools.

“This moratorium is the right thing to do, because the charter school statute was conceived in a different time, before there was any idea, really, of what virtual learning could become,” Hatcher said.

“Nobody’s against online schooling.

“This will just give us the time we need to gather data that could affirm it one way or the other.”

When the man turned away from Gray and was unable to see him, Gray punched him with a closed fist in the left rear part of the jaw, according to the news release.

The victim fell unconscious to the sidewalk and fractured his skull, and was hospitalized in a coma for three days.

The victim is still recovering from the blow, and suffers permanent hearing loss and ringing in his ears, according to the news release.

Circuit Judge Karen Simpson set Gray’s next court appearance for 9 a.m. May 28 for post-trial motions and sentencing. Gray faces a sentence of probation or two to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Gray had been free on $3,500 bond. Bond was revoked after he was found guilty and Gray was taken into custody.

SPRINGFIELD – As local school boards rejected this week a request from a proposed online charter school that would draw students from their schools, state lawmakers appear poised to slap a hold on the creation of virtual schools until regulations and guidelines to govern them can be crafted.

State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, introduced legislation Thursday to place a one-year moratorium on webbased virtual charter schools.

Earlier this week, Chapa LaVia had called for a threeyear moratorium. But she said that time span was “arbitrary” and she was open to reducing the length of time the ban would remain in place.

“This is the first time Illinois has ever seen anything like this,” Chapa LaVia said.

“And I’m not willing to risk something that would be detrimental to our children and our schools.”

Chapa LaVia’s legislation has passed a state House committee, and is headed to the full chamber for a possible vote.

The legislation arose in response to a proposal from Illinois Virtual Learning Solutions to open the Illinois Virtual Charter School at Fox River Valley.

The online school was proposed to include students from 18 school districts in Kane, DeKalb, DuPage, Kendall, McHenry and Will counties, and would be funded by local district funds, estimated at up to $8,000 per student.

While the nonprofit Illinois Virtual Learning Solutions would govern the virtual school, it has said actual operations for the school would be handled by Virginia-based,

Tunneling starts for bike path

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Work crews soon will begin drilling a new tunnel under Randall Road near Delnor Hospital to create a safer path for bicyclists and pedestrians to get from one side of the busy highway to the other.

In recent weeks, contractors hired by the Kane County Division of Transportation have begun preparing sidewalls and supports on both sides of Randall Road, just south of Keslinger Road, to prepare the site to begin tunneling under Randall.

When completed, the tunnel will run from near South Street, just south of Randall and Keslinger roads’ intersection, to a point opposite South Street across Randall Road.

From there, the county would construct a bicycle path that would run north, cross Keslinger Road and connect with existing trails surrounding Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation at KDOT, said the work began during the winter, and county officials hope to complete the work in the fall.

Coffinbargar said the tunneling work will begin soon, moving from the west side of Randall Road to the east side.

From there, the new trail will be constructed, and the county hopes to have the tunnel and trail open for public use no later than spring 2014, Coffinbarger said.

The project has been in the works for several years and was authorized by the Kane County Board in 2011.

The project was awarded to Martam Construction of Elgin. It will cost $1.87 million, with 80 percent of that amount coming from funds awarded by the federal government, Coffinbargar said.

Local high school robotics team headed to national tournament

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia High School junior Ben Wilt gets a kick out of seeing the robots he has designed do what they are supposed to do.

Wilt is a member of the Batavia High School Robotics Team 2704 Order2Chaos group, which has earned an invitation to compete at the F.I.R.S.T. – or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology – Robotics World Championship tournament in St. Louis, Mo., April 24-27. The team earned the invitation after being awarded the 2013 Chicago Regional Engineering Inspirational Award.

“I’m hoping we will do well, especially because there are a lot of seniors on our team,” Wilt said. The team has already won three exceptional awards

Wilt has been on the team for three years. He first became interested in the team because it offered training in welding.

“I like designing the robots on a computer and then seeing them do what I designed them

to do, like shooting a Frisbee and climbing on a metal pyramid,” he said.

And, as he has learned, making a robot do what it is supposed to do takes work.

“More often than not, things don’t go right the first time,” Wilt said.

Wilt said the experience of being on the team has led him to want to major in mechanical engineering in college. His father, Don Wilt, is a mechanical engineer at Miner Enterprises in Geneva.

His mother, Pat Wilt, said she has seen how much the team has helped her son. She and her husband are coaches on the Order2Chaos team.

“It led him to know that this is his passion,” she said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It’s all about money

of gun owners. Some years ago, it was a proponent of certain background checks. Under current management it has turned into a powerful lobby blocking any restrictions at all, including background checks. With a budget of over $200 million, it rates members of Congress on their support of its program – no new gun laws. It backs this up by spending large sums to elect those who agree with them and money to defeat those who do not. The most amazing fact is that it is now deriving tens of millions from gun manufacturers who naturally are only interested in selling more guns. Assault weapons have the highest price tag and are obviously a significant source of profit. Interestingly, Wayne LaPierre, the CEO of the NRA, is reputedly being paid about $1 million. No wonder he thinks everybody should be armed just like the old west. He

might make more money if more guns were sold.

He has been in office for over four years and has obviously made no moves to take away guns.

Recent polls show the American public strongly supports universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons.

To the Editor: As a long-term skeet shooter, I believe that hunting – if done safely and legally – is an ancient and honorable sport.

After the recent massacre at Newtown, Conn., and the ongoing slaughter of youths in Chicago and elsewhere, the polls now show an overwhelming majority of citizens believe that reasonable restrictions on gun purchases are necessary. Consider this number: 281,757 Americans died from gunshot wounds from 2001 to 2011. In fact, more people in this country die from guns than in the Iraq War or the war in Afghanistan. Why is it so difficult to enact reasonable laws to curb this slaughter? It’s all about money, big money.

Plass Appliance & Furniture closing

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Plass Appliance & Furniture is closing its Geneva store at 1881 S. Randall Road in the next month or two, a store spokesman confirmed.

Company president Dale Plass said the company is closing all its suburban Chicago stores to focus on a new business in Florida.

“We waited to the company’s 75th year, it’s been a good run, and life is a long

road,” Plass said. “We told the employees a while back and we are helping them in finding other positions. We have many loyal employees and they know the game plan. It’s no surprise. We’re working together like we always have.”

The Florida business is named DeSears and also sells appliances, but focuses more on furniture and mattresses, Plass said.

Plass also has stores in Addison, Elmhurst, Naperville and Northbrook. It

closed a store last year in Arlington Heights.

Geneva Economic Development Director Ellen Divita said she was unaware Plass was closing.

“Plass has always provided good pricing and fair value,” Divita said. “I bought my last appliance from them.

I have not talked to Dale Plass to get the full story. I am sorry to see it close. We thank them for years of service to the community.”

Plass said he had a store in Elgin from 1979 to about

2000, when it relocated to Geneva.

Plass said the decision to close did not come from having to pay higher sales taxes in recent years. The store was among several companies that routed sales through Channahon, allowing it to avoid the higher sales tax rates in the suburban area.

Plass said when the loophole came to light a few years ago, he decided the company would voluntarily pay local taxes, rather than fight it.

“Everything we did was completely correct in the parameters of the law,” Plass said. “The RTA was only one that did not like it, and they lost twice in court. It’s before the Illinois Supreme Court right now. It’s just proving that they have to follow their own rules. We voluntarily began paying sales tax. It’s a no-win situation ... it was easier to say forget it.”

Plass said the company “purposely waited for the 75th anniversary to close the stores.”

New DeKalb clerk keeping similar Maple Park job

By DAVID THOMAS dthomas@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Liz Peerboom will work as the village clerk of Maple Park while serving out her term as DeKalb’s newly elected city clerk.

Both Peerboom and City Attorney Dean Frieders said state law allows for her to work in both capacities. State law does prohibit elected officials from holding offices that would create a conflict of interest, or where one office could adversely affect the other.

“In this case, there is no statutory prohibition on holding both offices,” Frieders said in an email. “And there is no relationship between the two units of government that would create a conflict of interest or conflicting duties and obligations.”

Peerboom, 51, was the clear winner in Tuesday’s four-way write-in race for the city clerk position, collecting 75 percent of the vote.

“I was humbled,” Peerboom said. “I was hoping to win obviously, but I never dreamed it would be by that large of a margin.”

Peerboom will be sworn in with other new DeKalb leaders – Mayor-elect John Rey, and aldermen-elect Bill Finucane and Robert Snow – at a special meeting May 6. The

Maple Park job is an appointed position in which she makes $13.26 an hour and works 20 to 30 hours weekly.

Peerboom had previously worked for the city of DeKalb for 19 years, working in different departments until her retirement in 2010. Peerboom said she has already been

in contact with the DeKalb Clerk’s Office as well as the city’s information technology department.

Peerboom said she expects to take on the full duties of the DeKalb office, even though the council reduced the salary.

“I’m going to be doing it because I care about the city, not

because of the money,” Peerboom said. “It’s a very important role in the city. I do believe it is worth more than what it’s being paid now.”

In February 2012, Steve Kapitan resigned from the DeKalb city clerk position he was elected to in 2009 after reportedly failing to comply

with the state’s Open Meetings Act. The controversy around Kapitan’s exit led to the DeKalb City Council reducing the clerk’s salary to $5,000 a year after DeKalb voters defeated a referendum to make the elected office an appointed position.

jschwab@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia girls soccer team hadn’t been exposed to anything quite like what St. Charles North brings to the table, and Bulldogs coach Mark Gianfrancesco wanted as many of his players as possible to share the experience.

After giving freshman reserve Rachel Reinecke a short-lived taste of the action, Gianfrancesco sought some instant feedback.

“I asked her when she came out, ‘Pretty physical, pretty fast?’ She was like ‘Yeah,’ ” Gianfrancesco recalled with a smile.

The North Stars continued to earn admirers Thursday night, knocking off Batavia, 2-0, in Upstate Eight Conference River play. North won at Geneva by the same score on Tuesday, and the defending Class 3A state runners-up have yielded only one goal through 10 matches, a penalty kick in a 1-0 loss to Neuqua Valley.

Playing on a damp, chilly night, North (9-1, 4-0 UEC River) remained as close to airtight as a team can be less than a month into the season.

“It helped that the field was incredibly narrow in that we were able to try a couple of different formations in the back, but that back line has been solid – mentally, physically,” North coach Ruth Vostal said. “I thought the first half we weren’t doing as well, honestly, in the back. We weren’t possessing after we collected it.

But I thought the second half we stepped it up, did much better.”

The Bulldogs (4-2-2, 1-2 UEC River) were unable to muster a shot on goal all night.

“They’re tough,” Gianfrancesco said. “They go up, they win every ball in the air. I thought we were at least going up and challenging with them, but we can stop some of that, too. On some of the set plays, why wait for them to get back?

Play it quick, play at the feet.”

It took a bit longer than Vostal had hoped, but with 24:05 to play in the first half, Kelly Manski and Alyssa Brandt combined on a gorgeous goal.

Vostal praised Manski’s instincts for noticing that Batavia’s defenders were sucked toward the near post, and Manski uncorked an on-target, farpost delivery to Brandt, who volleyed the ball out of the air and past Bulldogs goalkeeper Jenny Welday.

“We’ve been saying make

somebody on the team look good, so if I play a pass, even if it’s a bad one, I’m going to trap it really awesome to make that pass look better,” Vostal said.

“So we keep saying make somebody else look good, and I think Kelly played a great ball. Alyssa was composed enough to just volley it in. Oftentimes you see those just going over the top.”

Added Brandt: “Most of my finishes generally come off of the ground, so getting it out of the air is definitely something a little bit different.”

North maintained a 1-0 lead through halftime. Considering how sharp the North Stars

have been defensively, the outcome was virtually sealed early in the second half when sophomore Elizabeth Parrilli headed one just inside the post past Batavia second-half goalkeeper Nicki Seiton. Ashlyn Walter was credited with the assist as North took a 2-0 lead.

From there, the North Stars continued to keep the clamps on Batavia, setting up a crosstown clash Tuesday against St. Charles East that likely will determine the UEC River championship.

For anyone playing the North Stars, simply scoring a goal, let alone winning, has proven to be a tall order.

“I think it’s definitely awesome that our defense and all the way from the forwards into the backs have been able to weather their storm and not allow any goals yet this season,” North midfielder Jorie Clawson said. “I think it’s awesome.

It’s a good accomplishment.”

North girls basketball coach turning over reins

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Colleen Backer’s love for basketball and coaching remain intact, but she’s looking for an outlet for those passions that is more compatible with the rest of her life.

Backer announced Thursday that she is stepping down after four years of coaching St. Charles North’s girls basketball team. She informed the North Stars’ players about her decision Monday.

Backer, who arrived at North after coaching at a prep school in Charleston, S.C., is the daughter of former longtime Wheaton Warrenville South boys basketball coach

Barry Brennan. She consulted extensively with her father before making the decision.

In an email explaining her rationale, Backer – who was Colleen Brennan when she first came to North – acknowledged mixed emotions about the move, but said there was no behind-the-scenes “drama” involved.

“As you know, I moved here from the east coast, and maintaining my relationships and life there in some way, getting married and having a family, being an effective special education teacher and having some time to myself are just not possible while being a head coach of a program for me right now,” Backer

wrote.

Backer routinely emphasized team-building and relationships above wins and losses but she also enjoyed competitive success early in her tenure.

Her first North team finished 21-10 Colleen Backer and memorably pushed an unbeaten Geneva powerhouse to the brink before the Vikings exhaled for a 47-45 win in a regional championship game played at North.

The North Stars have struggled the past couple seasons, including a 9-20 finish

in 2012-13, but Backer anticipates those lumps will do the returnees some good in the near future.

“The girls in the varsity program this year are just an amazing group, and many of them are young,” Backer wrote. “If I am in between this decision, this is the perfect timing to do it as we have had two building years and the earlier the girls are able to develop a relationship with a new coach the better as I truly believe they will make significant progress next year and the year after.”

Naturally, the 10-9, overtime thriller kept the North Stars – 4-0 entering play Thursday – at No. 1. Those figurative “defeat me” signs on players’ backs won’t be falling, either.

“We’ve had the energy throughout the year, but we’re getting it higher and higher each game, which is good,” North senior midfielder Nick McCullough said.

“Everyone’s just pushing each other in practice. We know each game is an important game to us and everyone is out to get us.”

Benet rebounded from a 9-4 deficit after three quarters to put the host North Stars on their heels at East Side Sports Complex.

North’s hot start in 2013 comes amid a role reversal in the coaching staff. Wanting to spend more time with family, former longtime coach Andy Thompson ceded control of the team to Sean McCaffrey during the fall but remained as offensive coordinator.

McCullough notes that little has changed in the dynamic, other than McCaffrey is the one handling paperwork and getting in referees’ ears should the situation call for that.

“They’ve kind of turned us into men in a way,” said Martin, who recently committed to NCAA Division II Seton Hill (Pa.). “We came in so young and we were much more [about] watching how older guys were doing it.

And then our coaches helped bring us up when we finally got on the field.”

North ranked fourth in the IHSLA polls entering the Benet game, but ultimately realizes winning once next month’s playoffs begin trumps any early-season success.

Either way, the North Stars are going for both.

Nothing seems out of the question when you’re armed with so much energy.

Inclement weather pushed action indoors to Marmion’s Regole Fieldhouse, which hosted its first competition when a JV match was played Wednesday. Because it was a meet, tennis took precedence over practices for other sports.

“It worked out really well,” Cadets coach John Tsang said.

“The courts play well inside.

It plays like an indoor tennis facility, and we were able to move around the matches pretty well [on three courts].”

Marmion (3-0, 1-0 SCC) yielded a combined seven games in the dual. Jackson Rettig won at No. 1 singles, while the top doubles tandem of Ricky Angsten and Kevin Hoss also was victorious.

Maple Park, a four-goal outburst after intermission lifted Kaneland (3-2-1, 2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East). Heather Ortiz scored twice for the Knights, while Madi Jurcenko and Kiandra Powell had a goal and assist each.

Last Saturday’s Charger Nation Invitational showcased the latest duels, with Marmion’s Will Graft edging Matt Meyers of ACC by less than a second in the 1,600 meters.

VanDyke (Wheaton Academy) and Kevin Grahovec (Marmion).

Marmion has had a stranglehold on SCC boys titles over the years, but the gap could be closing.

These veterans are a big reason why Chargers coach Troy Kerber greets the outdoor season with enthusiasm. If ACC can develop its stable of contributors behind them, Kerber will be even more overjoyed.

“We feel right now we have a pretty good core of athletes,” Kerber said.

“Our goal is to try to expand that core as the season progresses with some young kids who hopefully contribute by the end of the year to mix in with the other varsity athletes.”

ACC’s ability to bring along newcomers figures to be a decicing factor in its bid to unseat Marmion, the eight-time defending Suburban Christian Conference champion.

“I have a lot of respect for [Cadets coach] Dan Thorpe and his program,” Kerber said. “Even though we’re rivals, I think it’s a good, clean rivalry.”

In the category of eighth-grade fiction writing, Kayla Little of Rotolo Middle School won first prize; Henry Feldhaus of St. Peter’s Middle School won second prize; and Shelby Balogh of Wredling Middle School won third prize.

In the category for eighth- grade non-fiction writing, Megha Nayyar of Wredling won first prize; Jody Holta of Wredling won second prize; and Connor Heavington of Wredling won third prize.

In the category of eighthgrade poetry, Roxanne Vermaas of Rotolo won first prize; Mary Margaret Murray of Rotolo won second prize; and Breanne S. Warner of Haines Middle School won third prize.

CHARLES – Mara Hauser, president of The Hauser Group, a national office design firm in St. Charles, is looking to the future for trends in the workplace. Hauser said in a news release that companies must embrace and incorporate workforce trends of the future into their business today if they want to stay competitive.

In the release, Hauser said that roles that used to be filled by full-time employees will soon become blends of

a combination of employees and contingent workers, which could make up 40 to 45 percent of the workforce by 2020.

By the year 2020, there will also be a shift to a multi-generational workforce, consisting of five generations.

This could have a substantial effect on corporate culture, the release states.

“What this tells us is that work spaces will need to reflect a more casual and informal attitude, and more fluid and flexible work styles and schedules,” Hauser said in the release. “Designs for workplaces will

need to incorporate community, collaboration, and concentration.”

Work spaces will include open floor plans and adaptable areas, which allow people to break into teams without a major renovation.

According to the release, The Hauser Group office space uses work stations, tables and filing cabinets, and are all on casters for quick and easy redesign; meeting spaces allow for use of laptops and wi-fi so employees have the ability to work from anywhere in the office.

St. Charles Congregational Church rummage sale week begins Monday, April 15. I suspect Mister Z to donate to the former and fill those empty spots at the latter. Whatever happened to spring clean-up?

We managed to get out and about after voting on Tuesday. (Good wishes and high hopes to the winners. Nice try to the others. Wish we could recycle all those signs with a freshly painted message to do something positive such as “slow down” “eyes on the road” or “go Blackhawks.”

On a try-something-different pathway, we had an embedded commercial message from that drive-thru with a taco namesake. Time to give it a try. What? No forks, no napkins, just runny food and a bit of attitude.

On to the new coffee place in downtown St. Charles. The coffee – OK. The scones were soggy and the parking lot’s a nightmare. Drivers education tip: If you move your car, we can back out and then you get the space. Honking is for the geese.

Sunny at Dunkin’ Donuts, hurrying back for your warm welcome, effective service and mighty fine coffee.

I will stay on that same inner drive pathway to Beef Shack and the 7 Eleven where my winning lottery pick has yet to surface, but hope abounds.

Now, with straight and pearly teeth, it’s deja vu all over again, as Yogi Berra once said: Enjoy the season. Shop those sales. Feed the ducks.

Volkswagen Jetta gets sporty look If in the market for a Volkswagen Jetta, fuel economy is the main reason to choose a hybrid model. Driven in a conservative manner, the 2013 Jetta hybrid can almost make 50 miles on a gallon of gasoline.

A hybrid Jetta SEL model was tested recently and delivered an overall fuel economy figure of 42.9 miles per gallon, but that was with aggressive driving in the city and on 300 miles of interstates. The Environmental Protection Agency rates this hybrid at 48 mpg combined city and highway driving. With regenerative braking, the hybrid gets better fuel economy in the city.

Of the 17 Jetta models on the market in 2013, four of them are hybrids. The hybrids have four trim levels, which are priced from $24,995 for a base model to $31,180 for a loaded SEL Premium edition.

Between those two are the $26,990 SE and the $29,325 SEL models Premium unleaded fuel is recommended for the four-cylinder, 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, which is coupled with an electric motor to deliver 170 horsepower.

The hybrid duplicates the energy of a conventional Jetta, which can scoot from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8.3 seconds.

The hybrid was tested at just less than 9 seconds. One reason for the performance is the turbo engine. Another is that the hybrid is 200 pounds lighter than a typical gasoline or diesel-powered Jetta. A third reason is the DSG dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic transmission. In essence, this is a transmission built like a manual but which reacts as an automatic.

The shiftable automatic also has a sport mode for more excitable occasions.

A compact sedan, the four-door, five-passenger,

front-wheel-drive hybrid has reduced space in the trunk due to the battery pack. The 80-pound pack with a cooling fan is positioned behind the rear seats and takes up space.

A conventional Jetta has 15.5 cubic space in the trunk. The hybrid has 11.3 cubic feet of lighted space.

Since less fuel is needed, the hybrid has an 11.8 gallon tank compared to a 14.5 gallon tank in conventional Jettas.

The hybrids differ slightly in looks from conventional Jettas with a spoiler on the trunk lid, a rear diffuser and new air dam in front. Hybrid badging decorates the hood, both front fenders and the trunk lid.

Inside, the hybrid lettering is embedded in the front floor mats.

The $29,325 SEL model is not as loaded as the $31,180 SEL Premium model, but it comes close.

Standard equipment includes the normal array of power features, such as four express windows, heated exterior mirrors and door locks, but also brags of a power tilt and slide sunroof, heated front seats and windshield washer nozzles for the intermittent wipers, a touchscreen navigation system and a power driver’s seat.

The seats are covered in leather. The seven-speaker sound system has high definition AM, FM and satellite radio, compact disc and MP3 players, plus iPod and USB ports, auxiliary input hookup and Bluetooth. Cruise control and air conditioning are standard.

If the standard sound system is not sufficient, there is a nine-speaker Fender audio system available. The Fender audio and 17-inch instead of 16-inch alloy wheels are two components separating an SEL from an SEL Premium model.

The Jetta’s ride is enhanced by a multilink rear suspension with sport-tuned spring and damper settings.

Coil springs, telescopic dampers and antiroll bars are components of the rear and front strut suspension system. During hard cornering exercises, there was little inside wheel spin during the test week.

For a compact sedan, leg room in front and the rear is generous. Officially, measurements are 41.2 and 38.1 inches, front and rear, respectively.

Jetta offers a quiet ride as insulation factors are good.

There is minimal intrusion of road and engine noise into the cabin.

The hybrid SEL offers

five-spoke 16-inch alloys as standard wheels (P205 radial tires). Brakes are discs, vented with 12.3-inch rotors in front and solid with 10-inch rotors in the rear. On dry pavement from 60 miles per hour, the brakes can bring the car to a stop on a straight line in 130 feet.

On the safety side, stability and traction controls are standard on all Jetta models as well as driver and passenger front and side airbags, curtains for both rows, headrests complementing seat belts, a four-wheel antilock braking system, brake assist and electronic brake distribution.

In the Jetta, stability control electronics detect skidding and helps prevent it from breaking out of control.

Volkswagen’s crash response system reacts when an airbag deploys by unlocking the doors, turning off the fuel pump and activating the hazard lights.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance (towing, jump starts, tire changes, out of fuel and lock-out) and free scheduled maintenance, five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain, and eight years or 100,000 miles on the hybrid system.

The hybrid is built alongside the rest of the Jetta line in a factory at Puebla, Mexico.

Film ‘42’ tells important story well Writer-director Brian Helgeland approaches every scene of “42,” the story of baseball barrier breaker Jackie Robinson, as if it were a history lesson.

Nothing is especially wrong with this. Robinson, who in 1947 became the first black man to step onto a Major League ball field as a player, is a key figure of the 20th century. In simple terms, his bat struck the first major blow for Civil Rights – “42” can’t help being a history lesson.

Helgeland, who won the Oscar for his “L.A. Confidential” script, can point to recent precedence. Steven Spielberg also framed every scene of “Lincoln” as a history lesson. The difference comes in the presentation.

With “Lincoln,” Spielberg presented history like a college professor. With “42,” Helgeland presents history like a middle-school teacher.

Again, nothing is especially wrong with this. Children should see this movie. They should learn why Robinson deserves to be remembered and revered. They should learn the horror of the institutional racism that once dictated life in much of the country and of the ingrained racism that influenced life in the rest of it.

“42” is no dry and boring recitation of history. It features excitement and humor.

Children will be entertained by it, especially those who love baseball. But while their children learn, adults may get antsy with “42,” waiting for a few lessons to be pitched at their level. Such lessons come, but it takes a while.

With “Lincoln,” Spielberg at least assumed his audience knew of the Civil War. Helgeland assumes his audience knows nothing

Chadwick Boseman plays Jackie Robinson in “42.” Boseman delivers a soulful performance matched by credible big league baseball skills. about Robinson’s era. “42” opens with a quick vignette narrated by African-American baseball writer Wendell Smith (played by Andre Holland), who quickly explains the post-war years, Jim Crow laws, the Negro Leagues and the solid-white state of Major League baseball.

With that scene set, Helgeland cuts directly to the offices of a certain ballclub as general manager Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) bluntly tells his subordinates, “I’m going to bring a Negro ballplayer to the Brooklyn Dodgers.”

Of all the players in the Negro Leagues, Rickey settles upon Robinson (Chadwick Boseman). Amusingly, even though Rickey is painted as a hero of integration, he is drawn to Robinson through a different form of prejudice.

“He’s Methodist,” Rickey says. “I’m Methodist. God’s Methodist.”

Statistics show Rickey that Robinson is a superb athlete on the field. But he needs to know that Robinson has the Herculean inner strength to bear, and bear with outward serenity, the task before him. Robinson

REVIEWS Jeffrey Westhoff must endure what no person should endure, the racial hatred of a nation focused directly at him. And if he shows anger, he will be tagged as the aggressor.

As Rickey famously tells Robinson, “I want a player who has the guts not to fight back.”

“42” concentrates on the years ’46 and ’47, Robinson’s season with Brooklyn’s farm team in Montreal and his rookie season with the Dodgers.

In its broad strokes, “42” covers material familiar to even someone like me, who doesn’t know much about baseball’s past except the Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908. While crowds howl the n-word at Robinson from the bleachers, he finds enemies in his own locker room. During spring training a handful of Dodgers circulate a petition to keep him out of the club.

Some hang on to their hatred, but overall resistance

thaws as players recognize the superior skills he brings to their club and recoil from the abuse other teams hurl at him, from epithets to beanballs. Shortstop Pee Wee Reese (Lucas Black) drapes his arm around Robinson during a game in Cincinnati, sending a message to the fans from his native Kentucky who crossed the river to watch him play.

Helgeland is sending a message, too. He transfers the moral “we’re all on the same team” from baseball to life too glibly, a reminder that“42” is aimed primarily at a younger audience.

It’s in the details and the performances that “42” rises above a script that tends to be too calculated and academic and a tone too indebted to “The Natural.”

Boseman is phenomenal, with a soulful performance matched by credible big league baseball skills. He makes a more convincing screen Jackie Robinson than the genuine article, who played himself in the quickly made “Jackie Robinson Story” of 1950.

Helgeland’s slyest piece of casting is Alan Tudyk as Philadelphia’s manager Ben Chapman. Tudyk ranks among the most amiable of supporting actors, which makes it that much more shocking when he stands outside the Philadelphia dugout like a one-man Klan, pelting Robinson with every vile slur ever conceived to describe a black man.

Tudyk’s appearance reminds us that even people we like and admire can surprise us with a hidden well of bigotry. This is a disturbing and subtle lesson.

“42” is an admirable film that tells an important story well, but it wears its nobility too conspicuously.

Breast-feeding helps protect babies from illness Dear Doctor K: What are the benefits of breast-feeding? And if I do decide to breast-feed, how will I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

Dear Reader: Breast milk provides all the calories and nutrients that a baby needs for the first six months of life. It also helps protect babies from illnesses such as ear infections, lung infections, vomiting and diarrhea. That’s because for the first months of life, a baby’s immune system is not fully developed. Breast milk contains antibodies that the mother has made, plus several other infection-fighting substances and cells.

There is some evidence that breast milk may also help protect against sudden infant death syndrome, although why that might be so is not clear.

Babies of mothers who breast-feed are somewhat less likely to develop obesity, cancer, heart disease and Type 1 diabetes when they become adults.

Please don’t misunderstand: I’m not saying that babies who bottle-feed will get these diseases, just that breast-feeding may slightly reduce the risk that babies will develop these diseases when they become adults.

Exclusively breast-feeding for the first six months may help prevent food allergies.

Breast-feeding also may help with brain development and learning.

There are also practical advantages to breast-feeding.

It’s convenient, costs less than formula and does not need to be prepared.

That being said, some women choose not to breast-feed for medical or personal reasons.

Infant formula does contain all the nutrients a baby needs for normal growth. Millions of perfectly healthy babies have been raised on bottled infant formula.

If you do decide to breastfeed, it can be hard to judge how much milk your baby takes in at each feeding. But there are several signs that your baby is getting enough milk: • Wet diapers. Your baby should have at least one to two

wet diapers for the first two days. After that, your baby should have four to six wet diapers per day.

• Stools. During the first week, your baby should have two or more stools per day.

After that, the number of stools should increase to four or more per day.

• Milk supply. Two to four days after delivery, your milk should “come in.” Your breasts will feel larger, firmer and warmer as they fill with milk before each feeding. They’ll get smaller and softer after your baby has nursed.

• Feedings. Your baby should feed at least eight times every 24 hours. Most newborns nurse every one and a half to three hours. After feeding, your baby should seem satisfied and will probably fall asleep.

• Weight. After the first week of life, your newborn should steadily gain weight.

If one or more of these signs indicate that your baby might not be getting enough milk, talk to your pediatrician.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and so is my closest friend, Maria. We have been friends ever since we were in first grade together. My mother and father are excellent parents. They don’t let me do everything that I want to do, but they do give me the freedom to make most of my own decisions. Maria’s parents are very strict.

They don’t allow her to date or even to have a boyfriend. She is a beautiful girl, but they don’t allow her to wear clothes that are in style.

Dear Abby: I’m a 50-year-old man who is serving time for robbery in West Virginia. Every day I wake up acting as if I am in control and don’t have a care in the world. The truth is, I’m scared, lonely and feel totally helpless. In this deal, how should South plan the play in four hearts? West leads the spade king. East overtakes with his ace and returns his second spade. West takes this trick, cashes the club ace, and plays another club.

When West’s one-spade opening bid was passed around to South, his balancing three-heart jump overcall was intermediate, showing a respectable six-card suit and 14 to 16 high-card points.

North would no doubt have bid four hearts anyway, but West’s three-spade rebid definitely pushed him into it. East let the prevailing vulnerability dissuade him from bidding four spades.

(Note that four spades doubled goes down two, minus 500.)

Declarer must play the heart suit without loss. If the opponents had passed throughout, South would have taken the finesse. (A priori, East will have the heart king 50 percent of the time, but West will have a singleton king only 13 percent of the time.) Here, though, South must remember the bidding. East passed over his partner’s opening bid and has already produced the spade ace.

If he also had the heart king, he would have had seven points and would have responded. Therefore, West has the king of hearts.

South should play a heart to his ace and claim when the king luckily drops.

Especially when an opponent opened, always check the highcard points.
