Earth Day event draws crowd at Peck Farm Park By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Carolyn Burnham told people who stopped by her booth Saturday that buying bottled water costs 2,000 times what people pay to get water out of the their tap. Burnham, a volunteer with the Batavia Environmental Commission, administered a water taste test at an Earth Day event at Peck Farm Park in Geneva. People could sample regular tap water, filtered tap water and bottled water. Isaac Orcutt of Elburn tasted the three samples and found out his favorite sample was plain tap water. “I think they’re trying to raise awareness that bottled water is really bad and that the water in the bottle is bad,” he said. The water taste test was just one of the many activities offered Saturday hosted by Geneva’s Natural Resources Committee and the park district’s Peck Farm Park. Isaac Orcutt, along with his wife, Michelle and their 6-month-old baby, Nolan, also had a chance to get rid of an old television at Saturday’s event, which offered electronics recycling. “We’re getting more into trying to pay attention to

Jay Womack, chair of the Natural Resources Committee of Geneva, said the event offers people a chance to learn more about sustainability, pick up a free tomato plant or buy a sapling to plant later. Several booths were set up, including a bicycle tuneup booth and children’s yoga demonstrations. Ann Drover and Nancy Goodfellow, both part of the Green Sanctuary organization with the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, were selling re-usable packaging made of cloth to use in place of wrapping

paper. “It’s better for the environment,” Drover said. “You’re not throwing it into a landfill after you use it.” Womack pointed out many other activities related to Earth Day, which is Monday. He said families could enjoy drawing with chalk and learning about solar panels. People could also purchase a rain barrel or compost bin. “We just want people to recognize that even the littlest thing matters,” he said. “It all counts. … It’s all about choices. You can make a choice that’s good for the earth and people recognize they have the ability to change.”

Geneva teen wins Congressional art event KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, announced that Avie Churchwell, a junior from Geneva High School, was selected as the winner of this year’s 14th District Congressional Art Competition, according to a news release. “I’d like to thank all of the students for participating in this year’s competition and I’m pleased to congratulate Avie Churchwell for her winning entry,” Hultgren said, according to the release. “I

continue to be impressed by the ability and creativity of the students in our area and look forward to seeing Avie’s work displayed at the U.S. Capitol.” Churchwell’s submission, “Tea Party for One,” was selected by a panel of three local judges from among 19 entries submitted by area high school students. The portrait will hang in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. for one year. Churchwell received a roundtrip ticket to Washington D.C. compliments of Southwest Airlines to attend the official

ceremony honoring Congressional Art Competition winners from across the country later this spring. Hultgren presented Churchwell with a certificate and ribbon at a reception Friday at Water Street Studios in Batavia. The Congressional Art Competition was created in 1982 as an opportunity to showcase the talent of high school students and acknowledge gifted young artists. Hundreds of thousands of local high school students have been able to participate over the past three-plus decades.

MAPLE PARK

MAPLE PARK – Carson King, a 9-year-old from Sugar Grove, didn’t have any artwork displayed in Sunday’s Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival, but that didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for the activities he did get to do, particularly the pottery wheel. The John Shields Elementary School fourth-grader only watched someone use the pottery wheel at last year’s festival, his mother Lisa King said. “He’s so excited to do this,” she said, watching him mold the spinning clay. Held at Kaneland High School, the 14th annual Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival also featured live performances; visual artists whose focuses included watercolors, fiber felt work and jewelry; and artwork from current and former students. Seated at a table near the auditorium, 2010 graduate Megan Cline displayed some of her prints. The junior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is majoring in fine arts with a concentration in printmaking, although she also draws, sculpts and paints, she said. The Kaneland festival was the first such art festival she has participated in, she said. In the arts pavilion, lines for caricatures and silhouettes kept artists’ pencils and – in the case of the latter – scissors busy. Artist in residence Eric Nye also drew a crowd with his interactive paintings. Visitors were welcome to turn the paintings’ moveable pieces, which were mostly arranged in 3-by-3 or 4-by-4 grids. Because each piece had three sides, there were thousands of ways any single painting could look. Nye, 41, also displayed artwork from the Kaneland School District 302 students he talked to as the artist in residence. He spoke about what it’s like to a be a working artist, he said, adding he told them they shouldn’t wor-

ST. CHARLES EAST INVITATIONAL

East’s Koenen, Bowman keep racking up wins By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – There was a lot of chatter around the St. Charles East Boys Tennis Invitational Saturday. Some of it was typical shouts of encouragement from spectators: “That a way Jason!” or “Let’s go Nick.” But there also was some heated discussions between players, including an unpleasant exchange between St. Charles East standout Jasper Koenen and Libertyville’s Ben VanDixhorn in the No. 1 singles match. “Everybody knows that was my point!” VanDixhorn shouted at Koenen near the end of the first set, which VanDixhorn won, 6-2. Afterward, Koenen was apologetic about his role in the misunderstanding. “I had called a ball out right here and he didn’t hear me,” Koenen explained. “I was more upset with the way I was playing and so that anger I kind of took out on him. … It was just the moment. I was disappointed in how I was playing. I felt bad that I put my anger on him.” Koenen regrouped and won the second set, 6-3, forcing a race to 10 points in the third-set tiebreaker, which he won, 10-6. “I came out really slow,” said Koenen, who improved to 15-0 on the season. “I just came out not moving my feet, not hitting the ball right. … I hung in there with not great tennis in the second set, but towards the end of the second set and the third set, I played some of my best tennis.” Koenen said he had never played VanDixhorn before, but the two know each other well from having played in some of the same tournaments. Koenen gave VanDixhorn credit for playing well. “That was my first opponent that’s really pushed me this season,” said Koenen, who breezed to the finals by not losing a single game in his first two matches. “That’s the first set I’ve lost

Geneva’s Brad Burgess hits a return during a match Saturday at the St. Charles East Invitational. this season. That’s what I need. I need someone to kind of push me.” Koenen said teammate Justin Bowman provides that sort of tough competition in practice. Bowman, also 15-0 on the

season, cruised to the championship at No. 2 singles by defeating Libertyville’s Eric Klein, 6-0, 6-0. “Justin would be a No. 1 on a ton of teams,“ East coach Rob Livermore said. “He knows that, so he always

focuses on keeping his level of play as high as possible in all of his matches.” Koenen and Bowman’s titles helped the Saints finish second to Libertyville in the team standings. The Wildcats swept to

victory in all three doubles divisions, though their No. 1 doubles team of Jack Springgate and Scott Daluga had to rally to defeat Nick Huang and Ryan Doeckel of Geneva, 5-7, 6-1, 10-8. “I’m not upset because I’ve never been to the finals in this tournament before, so that alone is a victory,” Doeckel said. “But they were a beatable team.” They looked especially beatable after Daluga began cramping up severely at the beginning of the second set, but he gutted out the rest of the match, which seemed to give the Libertyville duo an emotional lift. “We, unfortunately, did not have enough momentum and energy,” Huang said. “It kind of was a snowball effect and they really got their energy in the second set and it carried over into the tiebreak. Unfortunately, that’s why we lost by such a small margin because they were more motivated than we were.” Wheaton Academy’s best finish was a fourth place result for sophomore Chris Jones at No. 2 singles.

left field to score what turned out to be the winning run. The Vikings rallied from a 2-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the fourth off Warriors starter Jordan Kurth. Geneva center fielder Bridget Weitzel started the inning with a double and freshman Emily Plocinski, sophomore Madison Keith and junior Jenelle Reilly added hits as part of the outburst. The Vikings’ mid-game momentum arguably started with the final play of the top of the fourth, when a strong throw from Keith in left field to Reilly behind the plate beat Waubonsie’s Meghan Grannan, who was attempting to score on a sacrifice fly. The Warriors also encountered offensive frustration in the top of the third, when leadoff hitter Amanda Lack’s drive to left-center field bounced off the very top of the wall back onto the outfield. Lack ended up being stranded. It seemed like it might be that kind of day for Warriors coach Aly Kelley’s team.

COUGARS 7-4, RIVER BANDITS 3-3

Cougars snare doubleheader sweep By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Quad Cities River Bandits were a big reason the Cougars started with an underwhelming 4-8 record, dealing Kane County five of those eight losses. But after another bout of nasty April weather forced the postponement of Friday’s scheduled contest between the two Midwest League rivals, the Cougars struck back in a big way. The Cougars swept a doubleheader with the River Bandits on Saturday, taking Game 1, 7-3, and winning Game 2, 4-3. The pair of wins gave the Cougars a series victory after Quad Cities’ win on Thursday. “It was a big step for us right there coming back and winning two and getting the series and getting a little momentum finally,” manager Mark Johnson said. “The kids were excited, and it showed. They played with some enthusiasm and caught the ball and

threw strikes. Hopefully we’ll keep swinging the bats well.” The Cougars got everything they needed Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, including quality starting pitching, timely hitting and a whole bunch of runs. Rock Shoulders was the day’s offensive star, going 5 for 6 with two doubles, two home runs, a walk, four RBIs and three runs scored. His performance powered a Cougars offense that piled up 11 runs on 19 hits over the course of two seven-inning games. “Wow,” Johnson said of Shoulders’ impressive day at the plate. “He’s just been killing the ball. He’s been that solidifier in the middle of the lineup that kind of protects the other guys that have been struggling a little bit. Now some of the guys are swinging with him, and they’re putting it together. It’s showing. When they all start clicking, it’s going to be pretty [darn] fun.”

Click they did in Game 1 as Kane County roughed up Quad Cities starting pitcher Brian Holmes for five runs in the first three innings. A fourrun third sent Holmes packing before the second out was recorded. Cougars starter Pierce Johnson turned in his best outing of the young season after going 11 days since his last start thanks to various weather-related cancelations. The right-hander went five innings Saturday, allowing one unearned run on three hits and striking out six en route to his first win of the year. Game 2 was a tighter contest, as the teams went backand-forth, though the Cougars picked up some clutch hitting when Marco Hernandez delivered an RBI single to break a 3-all tie in the bottom of the sixth. It was the type of clutch hit manager Johnson said the team has been lacking in the season’s early going.

GENEVA – Geneva softball coach Greg Dierks lugged the memory of a blown, late lead against Waubsonsie Valley last year into Saturday’s latest meeting with the Warriors. In last year’s game, the Warriors rallied to a win because of some well-placed, bloop hits in the seventh inning. “That one bugged me until today,” Dierks said. “Now I’ve got a new one.” While Saturday’s 5-4 loss to the Warriors represented progress relative to how the Vikings have played lately, it still was bothersome, especially considering how well the Vikings played most of the game. Geneva (3-9, 1-6 Upstate Eight Conference River) was coming off a 15-0 embarrassment against Metea Valley its last time out. “I told them afterwards [Saturday] that we have to find

some confidence out of the fact that we did so many things well today and carry that over, and just keep working through the things that didn’t go well for us,” Dierks said. Geneva led Waubonsie (112, 6-1 UEC Valley), 4-2, with two outs and nobody on base for the Warriors in the top of the sixth inning when defensive disaster struck. On consecutive plays, Vikings pitcher Haley Orwig induced ground balls to third base, both of which Vikings third baseman Kirsten Searcy fielded cleanly. But, on both occasions, first baseman Jordyn Schmidt was unable to snag Searcy’s seemingly on-target pegs, prolonging the inning. The Warriors made the Vikings pay. With runners at second and third, Waubonsie junior Melaina Koulos smacked a two-run single to right field, and took second base when the ball was mishandled in the outfield. Senior Erin Hohman then singled to

Real Life Adventures

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips married 10 years he became physically disabled and we had to move. No one in our new city took him for gay, even without me and without a wedding ring on him. He divorced me at 62 because the 30-something home-care aides looked better, but that’s another story. – Marcia In Pennsylvania Dear Marcia: I hope you will write again and tell us the rest of the story, as I’m sure I’m not the only person who would be interested in reading it. I agree that individuals who are uncomfortable with themselves sometimes emit vibes that make others uncomfortable because I have experienced it. But this subject does highlight the absurdity of gay stereotypes. Because a man is slight, soft-spoken and a meticulous dresser does not mean he is gay, any more than it means a man who is fat, sloppy and loud is straight. Dear Abby: I have been seeing “Duane” for two months. He’s kind, good-looking, successful, smart and fun. He’s also apparently quite proud of his astonishingly hairy chest because he always wears his shirts unbuttoned nearly to his navel. When we’re in public, you can see people react. Sometimes they point and whisper. I gently raised the issue, but he didn’t seem to think it was a big deal. I like him, but I’m embarrassed sometimes. Any thoughts? – Blushing In San Francisco Dear Blushing: Yes. Your friend is suffering from overexposure. When strangers point and whisper, what they’re saying is usually no compliment. Because Duane’s decolletage embarrasses you, give him a choice: Button up or mow the “lawn.” • Write Dear Abby at www.dearabby.com.

The Argyle Sweater

Dear Abby: My 14-year-old son, “Nils,” recently joined a sport he really enjoys. His stepdad and I are at every practice, helping the coaches and coaching my son along. Nils recently commented to me that he would like it if his father could come and see him practice. I took it upon myself, as I usually do, to call my ex, “John,” and suggest he make an appearance because it would make our son happy. My husband, who has been a wonderful stepdad to Nils for 13 years now, told me I should leave it alone. He said if John was a “real” father, he would just show up without being asked. When things like this happen, should I leave it alone, or should I ask John to be involved more than he tries to be? I tell my ex about all of our son’s activities and sometimes he just doesn’t show. – Trying To Be A Good Mom Dear Trying: Not knowing your former husband, I can’t guess his reason for not coming to your son’s practices, particularly if he said he was going to attend. John may be irresponsible, or he may have unforeseen scheduling conflicts. By telling him about your son’s activities and letting him know his presence is wanted, you have done your job as a conscientious mother. At 14, Nils is old enough to also call his father and invite him. The rest is up to your ex. Dear Abby: In reference to the letter from the man who was constantly setting off “gaydar” alarms in females (March 10), I would like to share my experience. I dated and then married a man who incorrectly set off MY “gaydar.” It had nothing to do with his mannerisms, his speech or appearance. It was his extreme personal insecurity regarding dating and making friends. In addition, “Mr. Not-Gay” could neither read nor write, which caused even more emotional insecurity. After we had been

Opener’s rebid paves the auction’s path

SOLUTION

CELEBRITY CIPHER

Ben Hecht, who was known as the Shakespeare of Hollywood, said, “Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock.” When a player makes his second bid, he should give more information about the distribution and strength of his hand than he supplied with his initial call. Let’s look at the opener’s choices this week after partner has responded at the one-level. What should South rebid in this deal? This is the basic theory: If he makes a minimum rebid, he shows minimum count, sometimes 12-14 points; at other times it will be 12-16 (or an unexciting 17). If opener makes a jump rebid, he guarantees extra strength, 15-17 or (17-plus) 18-20. Also, if he bids a new suit at the two-level, he indicates at least five cards in his first suit. Bidding a suit for the second time promises at least six. And no-trump specifies a balanced hand. Here, South should rebid two no-trump, showing (a good 17) or 18 or 19 (or a bad 20). This rebid does not deny a four-card major and is in principle game-forcing. Against three no-trump, West leads the heart jack. South has eight top tricks: two spades, three hearts, one diamond and two clubs. His best chance is a 3-2 diamond split. However, dummy is short of entries. The right play is to win trick one and duck (lose) a diamond. Declarer wins the second heart and ducks another diamond. He takes the next (heart) play by East, leads his last diamond to dummy’s ace, and cashes the two remaining winners in the suit, giving him 10 tricks in all.
