Young rider shows skill, earns respect in motocross By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com At age 2, Talan Zollers learned how to ride how to ride a bicycle – without the aid of training wheels. Now the 7-year-old is winning awards as a motocross rider. He was one of only 15 kids chosen from across the county to compete in March in the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. “I like going fast,” said the Louise White Elementary School first-grade student. The fact that he was competing in front of 67,000 people didn’t unnerve him. Talan finished in eighth place in the competition. “At first I was nervous, but once I got on the track, I wasn’t,” Talan said. Talan, who started racing when he was 4 years old, already has a dozen first-place awards under his belt, including in last year’s Winnebago County Fair Race in his age division. His dad, J.R. Zollers, introduced Talan to the sport of motocross racing. “I started doing it when I was 8 years old,” he said. “Somebody had taken me to a race and I fell in love with it.” Zollers owns Zollers Landscape Creations in Batavia. To perfect his riding skills, Talan works with a trainer. “The main thing is seat time,” Zollers said. “The more you ride, the better you get.” Since motocross racing can be a dangerous sport, Talan always wears protective clothing

And he doesn’t let the occasional tumble slow him down. “He had crashed after going down a downhill straightaway with a bunch of bumps,” Zollers said. “But he got right back on.” Following in Talan’s footsteps is his 6-year-old brother,
Preston. “His technique follows Talan’s,” Zollers said. Talan hopes to ride professionally someday and follow the lead of his hero, motocross rider James “Bubba” Stewart Jr., who was named 2002 rookie of the year in his debut pro season. “He’s my favorite rider,” Talan said.

Chris Marks, nationally recognized barbecue pitmaster, offers instruction on the best methods of smoking ribs during a barbecue class hosted Saturday at Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles by the organizers of the second annual Firin’ Up the Fox barbecue competition. ticipation, but quality of entries and judging, Firin’ Up the Fox organizers opted to hold classes, taught by Marks, to help participants increase their barbecue IQ, Farris said. “We’re hoping the people participating in these classes
could move up into competition, or even maybe be a judge for the competition,” Farris said. Marks dished out heaping portions of advice while walking his students through the hands-on practice of prepar-
ing their meat for the smoker, and achieving barbecue that leaves meat flavorful and tender, and leaves bones clean. He noted, for instance, that really delicious barbecue depends on cooking the meat “low and slow” – which, for ribs, meant smoking the meat on indirect heat at about 225 degrees for 4 to 6 hours. And he admonished students to resist the urge to look at the meat as it cooks. “It’s all about keeping the lid shut,” Marks said. “If you’re looking, you’re not cooking.” Marks said he travels regularly to the Chicago area to compete in barbecue contests and to teach barbecue classes. He said he teaches about 30 classes a year. Some participants in the class said they came to pick up tips from Marks to improve their chances at claiming a trophy at barbecue competitions.

ST. CHARLES – Chris Marks held up the naked spare rib bone, drawing the attention of all in the room. Moments earlier, the bone had been covered in pork rib meat – steaming, smoked barbecued rib meat, part of a long slab pulled fresh from Marks’ smoker. Covered, that is, until Marks had bit into it. “See that?” Marks said, with a big grin. “That is what you want to see when you’re done eating. Nothing but clean bone.” Saturday, Marks, a nationally recognized barbecue competition pitmaster and general manager of Ace of Hearts BBQ Specialties of Kansas City, came to St. Charles to share some of the tricks of the barbecue trade to a group of students willing to pay for the chance to themselves become
better barbecue cooks. About 16 students from the Tri-Cities and elsewhere in the Chicago area attended the class at St. Charles’ Charlestowne Mall, with instruction provided both inside a vacant storefront inside the mall and around Marks’ barbecue smoker grill, situated just outside the storefront’s exterior service entrance. The class was hosted by the organizers of the second annual Firin’ Up the Fox barbecue competition. That event is scheduled to be held on July 5-7 in St. Charles. Last year, the barbecue competition was staged as part of St. Charles’ Pride of the Fox Riverfest. But the competition proved so popular, drawing 29 contestants, that organizers believed the event should stand on its own this year, said Julie Farris, executive director of Pride of the Fox. STC East takes Game 1; Geneva rallies to win Game 2 By JAY SCHWAB
COACH SLY’S CORNER
jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Geneva baseball team’s offense had about as streaky of a 48-hour stretch as they come. After blistering St. Charles North for 19 runs in a blowout win Friday, the Vikings went scoreless for the first 13 innings of Saturday’s doubleheader against St. Charles East, only to erupt for five crucial runs in the top of the seventh in Game 2. It added up to a doubleheader split against the Saints in Upstate Eight Conference River play. East used senior righthander Matt Starai’s fourth straight complete game shutout to take Game 1, 5-0, before the Vikings’ late uprising in the second game netted Geneva a 5-4 win. Facing a 4-0, Game 2 deficit in the top of the seventh with one out and nobody on, the Vikings finally solved East righthander Mike Boehmer. Geneva uncorked seven singles in a span of eight at-bats, with Ben Chally’s game-tying sacrifice fly to center field the only out during that surge. The next batter, senior Jake Weede, continued Geneva’s trend of opposite field singles to right field, ripping one to right for the go-ahead run. “As soon as you hit that rally and everyone starts hitting like that, your team just starts going crazy,” Weede said. “It’s just the most fun. This is what makes baseball awesome.” Senior first baseman Anthony Bragg, who had eight RBIs the day before against North, started the rally with his one-out single. Brandon Evert, Nick Derr, Luke Polishak, Bobby Hess and Dan Berendt also singled leading up to Weede’s decisive hit. That was more like the offense Vikings coach Matt Hahn remembered from Friday. “I said, fellas, something’s going to have to change,” Hahn said, recalling a late-game conversation with his team. “I don’t know if it’s your approach that has to change, if it’s your swing’s going to have to change. Lay down a bunt, do something. I said we can’t go 14 innings [Saturday] and not score.” The Saints (12-7, 10-4 UEC River) threatened against Geneva senior Tony Landi (3-0) in the bottom of the seventh as seniors Nicholas Erickson and Joe Hoscheit notched two-out singles. The Saints’ Brian Sobieski followed with a hard-hit ball toward first base but Bragg picked it cleanly and tossed to the covering Landi to end the game. East coach Len Asquini said there

St. Charles East’s Matt Starai pitches during game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at St. Charles East. wasn’t much that could be done about the tough ending for Boehmer (0-5), who otherwise pitched an excellent game for East. “If he was struggling earlier, we would have warmed somebody up or got somebody out there, but you’ve got to remember, that all happened really, really fast,” Asquini said. Geneva (9-10, 6-8) had no such answers in the first game for Starai (6-0), who extended a remarkable streak of complete game wins against Waubonsie Valley, Batavia twice and now Geneva. The Vikings loaded the bases in the top of the first but couldn’t cash in and Starai gained steam from there, striking out the side in the top of the seventh for three of his 10 punch-outs. “That’s the best pitcher we’ve seen all year,” Hahn said. “He’s good. Spots all of his pitches, doesn’t mess around. It’s here, hit this one, and looking at his record, not too many guys are hitting it.”
Starai said he wasn’t concerned about Geneva coming into the game in the wake of a monster offensive game against North. “I try not to worry, it doesn’t really matter what team you face, you’ve just got to execute pitches,” Starai said. “If you execute your pitch, I’m not going to be disappointed no matter what the result is.” South Alabama-bound Geneva righty Jordan Touro (2-3) allowed all five of East’s Game 1 runs in the second and third innings, with three walks during that span contributing to his trouble. Hoscheit had five hits in the doubleheader for East, all singles, while Hess supplied four singles for Geneva, including two of the four hits the Vikings managed off Starai. The outcome gave East two out of three in the series, which began with the Saints rallying for a 5-4 win of their own Thursday in Geneva.
Coach Sly’s going to spray to all fields with some things that just can’t go unmentioned after another wild week of spring sports: • Whether it’s at the pro level or the prep level, baseball can be wild. In what other sport do you have a team win the first two games of a series like St. Charles North did against Geneva, then just get destoyed, 19-1, as was the case Friday? That makes for two straight ugly losses for the North Stars, who better stop the bleeding quick with St. Charles East lying in wait next week. • There’s something about western Kane County that just grooms softball excellence, especially in the Burlington area. The Rockets lost their stud pitcher, a Wisconsin recruit, to injury, yet they still roll out two pitchers who no-hit the same team in the same season? Some teams would kill for one legitimate ace pitcher, and BC apparently has three? Lucky ducks. • Speakin’ of softball, Sly thinks there’s several teams that have the chance to make major postseason noise. Both St. Charles schools like they could be tough outs in the postseason, and Kaneland, St. Francis and the aforementioned Central Rockets also deserve nice seeds. Things can change, but at this point, looks to Sly like it’s a lot more likely one of the local teams makes state in softball than baseball. • Could we have two girls soccer state champions from the area this season? Came darn close last year with St. Francis winning in 2A and St. Charles North coming oh-so-close in 3A. Both of those teams look like they could well be in championship form this season, and don’t count out St. Charles East as a darkhorse in 3A (and Central in 2A). • Nice showing by the St. Charles East girls at the county track meet, but hat’s off to West High. A fourpeat? Wow. Looks like West Aurora will make its presence felt in more than just boys buckets when the Blackhawks join the UEC.
Tuesday Coverage of Monday night’s baseball game between St. Charles East and St. Charles North at Fifth Think Bank Ballpark. The game is the first of a three-game series this week between the crosstown rivals, with games also slated for Wednesday and Thursday.
Friday A recap of Thursday night’s Upstate Eight Conference girls track and field meet. St. Charles East, coming off a second-place finish at last week’s county meet, is the Tri-Cities’ top contender at the meet, which will take place in Elgin.

WEST AURORA HIGH SCHOOL’S BLACKHAWK INVITATIONAL
New pairing pays off for Marmion with tourney title By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The pressure on Marmion’s second doubles team of Ricky Angsten and Luke Hoss was stepped up a notch during the championship round Saturday afternoon at West Aurora High School’s Blackhawk Invitational. The uptick in competition in the second set was not caused by the boys’ opponents from Conant High School, but from the adjoining court. Teammate Dave Demoll had just won No. 2 match over the Cougars’ Parth Sisodiga, which meant the tournament title would be determined by Angsten and Hoss’ contest. Although the pair dropped the second set, they rallied to take the third one to win the match and secure first place for Marmion. The Cadets needed to win three of the five championship matches against Conant to take home first place. Marmion had dropped two of the first three contests, both doubles matches. Freshman John King won
the championship round No. 1 singles contest. “We realized when we heard the cheering that it would come down to our match,” Angsten said “So that’s when it got a little bit more nervewracking .” “We definitely stepped up when it came to net play and we took advantage of our serves,” said Angsten. “We won all our service games. That was a big help.” A bigger challenge for the Marmon pair was not being regular doubles partners. Angsten and Luke’s big brother, Kevin, are the Cadets’ regular second doubles team. Kevin was not able to make the meet, so Luke, a freshman, filled in. “We have never played before,” Angsten said. “I’ve played with Kevin for three years so this was all new. Fortunately, we pulled it together.” Demoll, a sophomore, was also filling in for an absent teammate. “Whenever you don’t have your full force other players have to play up,” Marmion coach John Tsang said. “So Luke Hoss and Dave Demoll did a great job today in play-
ing up.” “The players continue to improve and it was a great opportunity to compete,” Tsang said about his team’s play in the tournament. “We had some really close points and I was really proud of the way these boys were able to pull out these matches.” The No. 2 doubles match was also pivotal for St. Charles East to place third. The Saints split the first four matches, with South Elgin winning the singles contests but losing the doubles. The Saints’ No. 2 doubles team of Colin Jones and Alex Winters were not able to top their South Elgin opponents and the team finished fourth. “We had a lot of close matches in the doubles today but they didn’t go our way so we are a little disappointed with that,” said Rob Livermore, the Saints’ coach. “But we really fought as hard as we could.” Marmion advanced to the championship round by defeating host West Aurora and East. St. Charles North took sixth and Geneva placed seventh in the eight team tournament.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips ship. Do you have any ideas to make my life a little more interesting? – Lonely Woman Dear Lonely: Start by making sure you participate in all the activities your assisted-living facility offers. Shared mealtimes and holiday celebrations also present opportunities to mingle. The trick is to find something you have in common with these men – sports, games, music, movies. Because long-term memory outlasts short-term memory, some of them might find it easier to discuss their youth than the present. Encourage your caregiver, Kate, to take you places where you can meet other seniors. And while you’re at it, why not invite some of the men to join you both during your Dear Abby sessions? It’s a way to draw people out and get to know them better. Dear Abby: After a sixmonth separation, my husband and I are reuniting. We were married for 22 years. I know for a fact he has dated and slept with several women. He’s adamant that he used protection each time, but the idea of STDs has me preoccupied and worried. I have asked him to use protection with me until I get over my fear. How long do most of today’s STDs incubate, and what is a safe time to wait to remove the “rain gear”? – Longing For Contact Dear Longing: Congratulations on your reunion. Rather than worry about this, ask your husband to schedule a doctor’s appointment and be tested for any STD he might have contracted. Not all STDs have the same incubation period, but a blood test could resolve the issue and put your mind at ease. • Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.

The Argyle Sweater
Dear Abby: I work in a small office with two former heavy smokers who have now transitioned to vapor/e-cigarettes. My concern is that they “smoke” their e-cigarettes in the office constantly, and I don’t know what chemicals I am now breathing secondhand. Both of them are senior to me in rank and age, and they pooh-pooh the notion that anything but water vapor is being exhaled. Am I making something out of nothing, or should I be worried about this? – Clean Air Dear Clean Air: You don’t have anything to worry about, but your co-workers may. In 2009, the FDA announced the findings from a laboratory analysis that indicated that electronic cigarettes expose users to harmful chemical ingredients, including carcinogens. However, those elements were NOT detected in exhaled vapor. Dear Abby: The woman who collaborated with me on this letter is in her 80s and lives at an assisted-living facility. I am a caregiver and a senior myself, and I have worked in this area for six years. We read your column on the days I care for her. She loves it and responds verbally to all the letters. Many times the situations spark good conversation, even though her short-term memory is failing. Sometimes we end up howling with laughter. She’s a delight and has the courage to still seek out relationships. This is what she asked me to help her to communicate. – Kate In Austin, Texas Dear Abby: I have been in assisted living for seven years. There are times when it can be lonely and boring. I’d like to meet some men for companionship, conversation and perhaps romance. The men here act so much older than me. They don’t start conversations. They stay in their rooms and watch TV and don’t seem interested in conversations. It’s hard because my memory isn’t what it used to be, but I do remember how nice it was to have male companion-

Responder makes his second bid
SOLUTION
CELEBRITY CIPHER
Stephen Covey, whose most popular book was “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” said: “Every human has four endowments: self-awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom: the power to choose, to respond, to change.” Last week, we looked at opener’s rebids. This week, we turn to the responder and his power to choose his rebid. Assuming that the opener has made a minimum suit rebid, the responder divides his hand strength into three brackets: weak, game-invitational and game-forcing. If he is weak (6-9 points), he must rebid at the one-level or in two of a suit already bid by his partner or himself. So, in the given auction with a weak hand, he must pass or bid two spades. Anything else promises more strength. Here, despite his doubleton club, South should rebid two spades. (Yes, it probably would have worked well if East or West had made a takeout double on the first round.) West leads the diamond queen. The defenders take the first five tricks, two in diamonds and three in hearts, then exit with a club. How should South continue? Declarer must play the trump suit without loss. He could cross to his ace, planning to return to the dummy with a club to take a spade finesse on the second round. Or he could finesse immediately. Since West will have a low singleton spade four times more often than a singleton queen, it is correct to finesse on the first round. When the finesse wins, declarer returns to the board with a club, takes a second spade finesse, and claims.
