HUNTLEY – With an eye toward refurbishing the downtown, Huntley officials have bought two more properties there, including a two-story residence that once served as a hotel for railway visitors in the early 1900s. But the recent downtown purchases are causing concern among some local historians, who fear that the village is merely paying lip service to preserving the historic infrastructure that created the village’s country charm. Village trustees and administrators are about to ramp up planning and engineering on Huntley’s 2010
“Demolition is something the village is good at, and restoration is something I have never seen them do. I see no support for historical preservation from this village.” Tom Conley Historian, ifth generation Huntley resident downtown revitalization plan, which includes adding development and improving building facades and streets throughout the Huntley square. “Demolition is something the village is good at, and restoration is something I have never seen them do,” said local historian Tom Conley, who is a fifth-generation Huntley resident. “I see no
support for historical preservation from this village.” The Huntley Historic Preservation Commission expressed similar concerns last year after members heard rumors that the village wanted to tear down the former Sawyer-Kelley Mill along Main Street for additional downtown parking. The village purchased the former mill, 11801 Main St.,
which was built in the 1890s and belonged to two influential Huntley businessmen, W.G. Sawyer and John Kelley. Conley, a former commission member, said the village hasn’t been clear with its intentions behind the downtown purchases, including the two properties the Village Board authorized buying earlier this month. The two-story former hotel is on the southeast corner of the downtown, between the railroad tracks and Route 47. The Siegrist family operated the property since the 1890s as a hotel for visitors coming into town via the railroad, Conley said.

HUNTLEY – Construction crews soon will start turning soil throughout the Huntley High School football stadium, after the District 158 board earlier this week unanimously approved $1.4 million in construction bids. Board President Don Drzal said that football stadium construction, the first project to the district’s extensive expansion of the high school, could begin by early June. The majority of the bids that members approved Thursday involve excavation of the football field and installation of drainage equipment before a new synthetic football turf is installed. “At this point now, we are going to monitor the actual progress that takes place,” Drzal said. “We are in full project mode.” Other items included in the $1.4 million construction bid involve the installation of a new track surface around the football field and the purchase of new on-field equipment, such as goal posts.
H. Rick Bamman – hbamman@shawmedia.com
Preliminary expansion plans for Huntley High school to accommodate 3,000 students in the near future were discussed by the Huntley 3000 committee and the board. District administrators also are preparing to release another construction bid in the coming weeks that would seek vendors to install an irrigation system along the school’s baseball and soccer fields, Drzal said. Construction on the exteri-
or improvements to the high school should conclude by mid-August, Drzal said. District officials then would start finalizing their budget on the interior upgrades to the high school. Those improvements could include wider hallways and
additional classroom space, but the board still wants to narrow that wish list to manage costs. The district has wanted to expand the high school so that the building can house the 3,000 students who are expected to roam the halls by 2019.
Operation Click offers incentives to help kids adopt safe driving habits

CYNTHIA WOLF editorial@nwherald.com CRYSTAL LAKE — A Harvard High School senior, a Cary-Grove High School junior and a Marengo Community High School junior each became the proud owner of a new vehicle Friday. And none will pay a dime toward the car, tax or license. Jacqueline Jimenez, Susan Taddy and Keegen Zickuhr were the lucky students whose keys turned over the ignitions at the culmination of the Operation Click banquet at D’Andrea Banquets in Crystal Lake. Perhaps most excited, though, was Taddy’s mom, who kept repeating “Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!” when her daughter’s turn at the wheel started the 2010 red Chevrolet Aveo. “It’s pretty cool,” 17-yearold Susan Taddy said. “I was the last person [to turn a key], so I was hoping.” Zickuhr held the second-tolast key when he climbed into the 2008 PT Cruiser he won Friday. “I think it’s an amazing thing, just to get kids to drive more safely,” Zickhur said of the Operation Click program. “I’m very nervous and excited.” Jimenez’ eyes grew large when her attempt started her black 2007 Pontiac G6. “I was like ‘Oh, wow,’” she said. “I think it’s a great program.” About 300 people attended the banquet Friday. Operation Click President Sean McGrath, a Crystal Lake patrolman, said the peer-run program offers an extra incentive to help students adopt

Sally Taddy of Cary reacts while seeing her daughter, Susan Taddy, win a car during the Operation Click banquet Friday at D’Andrea Banquets in Crystal Lake. safe driving habits – including not just buckling up, but also driving sober and not texting and driving. The program began in 1998 with just three Crystal Lake high schools. It now involves students in 39 high schools in northern Illinois and Wisconsin. Cars this year were donated by Courtesy Buick GMC of Crystal Lake, Kunes Country Ford of Antioch, and by a financial contribution from the Lake in the Hills Rotary Club,
Intren of Union and Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital of Barrington, McGrath said. Students at participating schools sign safe driving contracts, and seat-belt compliance surveys are performed quarterly. From each qualifying school, one to four students are selected to draw a key during the banquet. A good deal of emphasis during the banquet was placed on the dangers of texting and driving, a practice that makes
a person 23 more times likely to be involved in a crash. McGrath referred to 2011 statistics that showed that on any given weekday, about a half a million people were talking on their cellphones while driving, and 1.2 million were “engaged with their mobile device in some way,” whether it be texting, checking their calendars or using GPS navigation. “So how safe are we?” McGrath asked. He commended partici-
pating students, faculty and parents, and said that the program has led to seat-belt compliance among participating schools averaging between 94 percent and 96.25 percent, whereas the state average is 93.6 percent. Some individual schools saw compliance rate increases of as much as 18 percent between pre-program surveys and surveys conducted after the school and its students began promoting Operation Click, McGrath said.
This is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event where teams made up of friends, family and co-workers fundraise throughout the year and then come together to walk a track through the night.
This year’s theme is “Luau” and participants may decorate their campsites to the theme. Some of the entertainment planned for the night includes Envision Dance Company, an Intrigue Fitness Hula Hoop
presentation, belly dance with Natalie Block of Belly Rhythms, Zumba with Ivette Garven, and The Lennys. To celebrate survivors, Relay for Life of Huntley has planned a complimentary dinner at 5:15 p.m.

Caffeination Station brews gourmet coffee By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – John and Patti Wuich can find themselves consuming a couple pots of coffee in a day. Like most avid coffee drinkers, the Huntley couple knows the effect a fresh, quality brew can do to a person enduring the daily grind. The former owners of Wuich Mechanical in Huntley also know a good business opportunity when they see one. Combining their business savvy and love for coffee, the two recently started an online-only coffee store called the Caffeination Station. The cornerstone of their start-up business is an automatic, gourmet coffee machine imported from Italy. The machine can dispense eight different espresso-style coffees, including cappuccino, mochachino, black coffee and even hot chocolate. “You are getting a better tasting coffee than the instants. It’s a gourmet blend. It’s a convenience to the employee and employer because they don’t have to do anything,” John Wuich said. “There’s nothing but pluses.” Nearly a month ago, John and Patti Wuich received the proper licensing to import the Italian-made machine. With five machines in hand, they have attended business expos in Huntley and Crystal Lake to spread the word about their small start-up business. The couple believes the machine is a superior alternative to the typical coffee machines that populate office cafeterias and waiting rooms. For one, the machine dispenses high-quality blends and provides gourmet alternatives to the traditional black coffee, they said. The couple also won’t charge a business for installing machine, opting to charge a $1 per cup that may or may not be passed on to employees. The couple offers flexible payment plans that can be negotiated with any business that wants the machine.

The machines brew freshly grind espresso, cappuccino, hot chocolate and other coffee-based drinks. On the Web The Caffeination Station in Huntley offers a specialty gourmet coffee machine imported from Italy that dispenses eight different coffees, marketed toward businesses. The web-based store also offers roasted coffee blends and specialty teas online. To learn more, visit www.cafstation.com The two also service the machines, which plug into a regular electrical outlet for operation. “It saves employers time because they aren’t making that specialty coffee run,” Patti Wuich said. “Employees can get a cappuccino or frappe from the office, and employers can save money and keep employees happy.”
The two have spent the last month networking with businesses and finalizing a marketing plan. They hope to have 20 machines in place with businesses across the Chicago area by the end of the year. The web-based Caffeination Station also offers 20 to 30 different coffees available for the sale. John and Patti Wuich roast the high-quality blends and ship them within 24 hours of receiving the coffee beans. The speedy delivery guarantees that consumers both at home and in the office can get a savory cup of coffee. “People can have that great cup of coffee at home without having any of the chemicals,” Patti Wuich said. “You’re not going to be able to get anything fresher because we do the roasting.”

“Serving our communities to make them better places to live.”
MARENGO – The Illinois Tollway Authority gave Marengo officials the next six months to present an initial interchange design as the agency prepares to retool area bridges for its Interstate 90 widening project. Marengo must have its boundaries extended along Route 23 to I-90 before that point to have the “standing” to develop the preliminary designs, City Manager Gary Boden said. In the face of resistance, city officials have been trying all year to annex nearly 2,400 acres southwest of its borders to reach I-90 and begin formal talks with the Tollway about financing a new interchange intended to spur future development in the area. “The fact of the matter is until we are annexed up to the interstate, we can’t take a formal lead,” Boden said. The city’s annexation plan cuts through Riley Township, whose officials routinely have criticized Marengo for acting too fast and disregarding proper planning in seeking to add the extra acreage. But Boden said Marengo will have its boundaries ex-
“The fact of the matter is until we are annexed up to the interstate, we can’t take a formal lead.” Gary Boden Marengo city manager tended to I-90 in “the next several months” to complete time-intensive soil studies along I-90 that are needed for a preliminary interchange design. Tollway spokeswoman Jan Kemp said the agency already has begun planning to rebuild numerous bridges, including Route 23, in the agency’s I-90 widening project, which will add driving lanes from Chicago to Rockford. “The Tollway has advised Marengo officials that a preliminary design for a proposed interchange would be needed within the next six months to ensure that the bridge we build can accommodate a future interchange,” Kemp said. The Tollway has just begun informally talking with Marengo, McHenry and DeKalb counties, and the state transportation department about a new interchange at Route 23 and I-90, Kemp said. The Tollway has made more than $100 million avail-
able to communities along I-90 for new interchange construction, as part of the Tollway’s widening project, Kemp said. The agency already has fielded requests from more than a half-dozen communities, which like Marengo are competing for limited Tollway construction funds. The preliminary interchange design would be an early step in a complex, and often lengthy, planning process before the Tollway endorses funding for a new interchange. It took Huntley nearly a decade of planning before the Tollway officially endorsed funding for the $61 million interchange at Route 47 and I-90 that now is being constructed. Huntley’s approach to the project is regarded as the model for any Illinois community wanting to build an interchange with the Tollway. Village officials gathered commitments from local gov-
ernments, including McHenry and Kane counties, before presenting its financing plan to the Tollway. The local portion covered 50 percent of the project costs, with Huntley footing about $5.4 million of the bill. “The key is the local share,” Huntley Village Manager Dave Johnson said. “It gives you more credibility when you go meet with the Tollway.” Likewise, Marengo would start to intensify discussions on financing an interchange at Route 23 with the likes of McHenry and DeKalb counties, once the city’s borders are extended to I-90, Boden said. McHenry County Board Chairwoman Tina Hill said the county has yet to discuss financing a Route 23 interchange. The County Board is “waiting and seeing” how Marengo advances the project before County Board members start debating financial proposals in committee, she said. “We have no position on this. It hasn’t been discussed at any level. It’s a decision that is left up to Marengo,” Hill said. “It’s in their ballpark now. We are waiting on Marengo.”

Take Charge Indy will run in the $300,000 Alysheba Stakes on Friday, a grade 2, 1 1/16mile race that will be part of Friday’s Kentucky Oaks undercard, Sandford confirmed April 26. Trainer Patrick Byrne said
Rosie Napravnik – who rode Take Charge Indy to a second-place finish at the Skip Away Stakes in March – will again be aboard for Friday’s race, which is expected to be run in front of more than 100,000 fans. “These are always tough races, but he seems to be doing well,” Byrne said in a telephone interview. “So we’ll look forward to running him and watching him run. “This will probably be a little tougher race [than the Skip Away Stakes], but he’s up for the task. Take Charge Indy, which is stabled at Churchill for eight
months out of the year, led for much of the Skip Away Stakes. Cigar Street made a late charge down the stretch after taking the lead on the final turn and edged out Take Charge Indy at the finish. Since then, Byrne said Take Charge Indy has been able to put on weight and is running stronger than he was earlier this spring, which should make for a solid performance in Friday’s run. The Sandfords have have entries in races throughout Derby week, which Byrne described as a Super Bowl and Mardi Gras all rolled up into one. Maribeth Sandford grew
up in Louisville and around the Derby, but said that it’s even more of a spectacle to be part of it first-hand. After last year, when Take Charge Indy finished 19th in the Kentucky Derby, Chuck Standford said there won’t be as much newness to adjust to this time around, especially on a track where his horses feel at home. “Derby Week is just a special week and we got to go through it last year,” Chuck Sandford said. “So we understand it a little bit better and so to be able to run a couple of different horses on Oaks Day should be really exciting.”

Colin McMahon of Montgomery plays in the new Parish Hall during a recent visit to St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntley. The new $8 million Parish Ministry Center is used as community space for religious education, youth ministries, social events, retreats, meeting space and administrative offices.
Huntley church completes expansion St. Mary Catholic Church unveils $8M addition of Parish Ministry Center By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Inside St. Mary Catholic Church, the Rev. Steve Knox can walk freer, and breathe easier, now that an $8 million addition that includes extra meeting space recently opened to parishioners. The Huntley church’s new Parish Ministry Center has been two years in the making and now gives the church 33,000 square feet of additional space that Knox and other church staff have envisioned as a place where parishioners can grow their relationship with God. “It enhances the parish life,” Knox said. “When you have spaces for people to get
together, good things happen.” The center, dedicated and blessed last Saturday by Bishop David Malloy of Rockford, gives the church 17 interchangeable classrooms for its religious education program that can be converted into meeting rooms for staff, parishioners and the public. The center includes a Parish Hall, complete with a full-service kitchen, where the church can host social gatherings, religious retreats, youth ministry events and funeral luncheons for the first time in the church’s history. Stained-glass windows form the walls of the center’s Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, a smaller, private
space where parishioners can spend solemn time with their thoughts and the Lord. Knox and the St. Mary’s staff started planning designs and a fundraising campaign for the center in 2011, after seeing demand for their church grow following years of population growth throughout Huntley. The church had gone from serving 350 households 15 years ago to serving 5,300 households today. Staff had only the existing church at their disposal, with only a handful of meeting rooms available in the basement. The limited space forced the church in some instances to create makeshift office space. It rented classroom space
at Huntley District 158’s Marlowe Middle School for $50,000 a year, so that students from kindergarten to the seventh grade in the church’s religious education program could have adequate room. Now the church no longer will rely on Marlowe. The added classroom space included in the center also comes equipped with the latest audio and visual technology that allows the church some extra creativity with developing the faith of the church’s youngest members. The center also includes extra office space for administrators. The Parish Hall now will be able to handle overflow from the flood of parishioners who typically attend the popular Christmas
and Easter Masses. But Knox finds it especially a relief that the $8 million project was solely supported by parishioners, who he said greeted the project with enthusiasm. In a wide-ranging fundraising campaign, the church collected more than $5 million in parishioner pledges. The church will continue to collect pledges and donations, as it pays down the remaining $3 million owed on the center, Knox said. “It was all done with parishioners. We knew it was going to be challenge because of the economy,” Knox said. “If people see the need and they are supportive, they usually will step up, and they did.”

New standards call for more hands-on classroom activities
By JOSEPH BUSTOS jbustos@shawmedia.com Inside Jake Seiler’s Prairie Ridge High School chemistry class, students shook together compounds such as dinitrogen tetroxide and nitrogen dioxide, and stuck them into cold water and into hot water. The students see whether they change color, and by the end of the lab after testing various compounds, Seiler said, they should be able to predict what happens if the substance is heated or cooled. Students applying concepts, designing more, having them make modifications and doing more hands-on activities is the main thrust of the Next Generation Science Standards being put together and which are expected to be adopted by the state possibly by the end of the school year. The proposed standards even have progression for students on what knowledge they should be gaining by certain grade levels. For example, between third and fifth grade, students should be learning how humans and other organisms can be affected if the global temperature continues to increase. By middle school, students would be learning how human activities alter or damage the biosphere and how humans can reduce their impact on the environment. In District 158, which includes Huntley High School, science teachers are preparing for the new standards. Mike Wheatley, director of the health, physical education and science curriculum, said teachers at the elementary level will have students doing more hands-on activities when it comes to science. Part of the new science standards is integrating the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics approach. Students synthesize information from other subject areas to design solutions to problems. Students need to use math to back a solution to a problem in a science class, Wheatley said. Wheatley said District 158 plans to have the standards in place for the 2014-15 school

Huntley high school freshmen Vicky Wolicki and Chris Beck record information during a gravitional force lab in Amanda Henk’s physics class April 17. year. The proposed science standards are broken down into three categories: the traditional acquisition of knowledge, cross-cutting across disciplines such as using math in science and hands-on science activities. Jeff Robinson, a biology teacher at Huntley High School, said the new science standards will be a shift in the science curriculum. Historically, science teachers concerned themselves with teaching science facts, having students work a section out of a textbook and then take a test. “But it’s a shift [to] teaching them a scientific mindset and giving them the ability to be scientific thinkers,” Robinson said. For example, instead of having students memorize
parts of a cell, students will be asked how does a piece of DNA produce a protein, Robinson said. If students are investigating a problem, and they have to figure out the tiny details, it will leave a longer impression. Matt Elder is a science teacher at Marlowe Middle School in Lake in the Hills, where students have begun to work on a medieval unit. As part of the unit, his class will build one-and-halffoot catapults to launch pingpong balls. The students have to research and design the catapults on their own, Elder said. “One of the things we decided to do is incorporate problem-based learning where students have more responsibility of gaining knowledge, rather than us telling them what to do,” El-
der said. Kathy Gilbert is the math division chairwoman at Prairie Ridge High School, and next school year she is slated to become the STEM division chairwoman at the school when the science and math departments merge. At District 155, the science curriculum already has a lot of lab activity that the Next Generation Science Standards emphasize. “I don’t think it’s going to be a radical change for us,” Gilbert said. As part of her role this school year, she has been observing science classrooms and preparing for the upcoming science standards. “The emphasis in the past on science curriculum has really been on acquisition of knowledge and finding out different things and getting
knowledge.” Gilbert said. “With our current generation of students, it’s easier and easier to find knowledge if you need it. The Internet has made things easily accessible. The acquisition of knowledge, while still important, is not going to be the major thrust. ... We’re really looking to see students do science. Be more active in science.” Gilbert said the emphasis of the standards will be on doing science, from kindergarden through 12th grade. “Let’s do science, let’s investigate., let’s analyze, let’s make it a part of who we are, instead of an abstract concept,” Gilbert said. “In order for people to be successful in our current world, they need to be able to analyze, break things down, put things together, and have that curiosity for learning.”

Increase to tax break for seniors passes in Illinois By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com Older homeowners will get a bigger tax break on their tax bills next year. The Illinois House and Senate overwhelming passed – with just two “no” votes in the House and none in the Senate – a bill that raises the senior citizen homestead exemption from $4,000 to $5,000. Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill into law March 23. The increase amounts to savings of about $100 for a senior citizen with a home valued at $200,000 in Crystal Lake. The change goes into effect immediately in Cook County, but for McHenry County and the rest of the state, the change affects bills sent out in 2014 and later. Several area legislators said the difference was because of the timeline for Cook County assessments, which runs later than in other counties. The exemption has been steadily rising since 2003, when the exemption was $2,000 in counties other than Cook. The way property taxes are calculated doesn’t take into consideration that home values are falling and that many senior citizens are on fixed
How they voted A bill that raises the senior citizen homestead exemption, Senate Bill 1894, passed both the Illinois House and Senate. Here’s how area legislators voted: State Sens. Pam Althoff, Dan Duffy and Karen McConnaughay all voted “yes.” State Reps. Jack Franks, Barbara Wheeler, David McSweeney, and Michael Tryon all voted “yes.” incomes, said state Rep. Mike Tryon, R-Crystal Lake. The change in the exemption tries to address some of that disconnect. “I get calls every day from seniors literally in tears who are scared they are going to lose their homes,” said state Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo. Franks was a co-sponsor of the bill. He also has sponsored a bill that would prevent governments subject to the property-tax cap from collecting increases in years that their overall assessed value decreased unless they have voter approval. The measure was defeated earlier this month in a 43-65 vote, but Franks said he’s still working on getting the measure through.
clared a disaster area by the USDA, giving Kampwerth the opportunity to choose two organizations to receive $2,500 donations. Kampwerth selected the Huntley Area Public Library Friends Foundation and the McHenry County 4-H Youth Foundation. The Huntley Area Public Library Friends Foundation will use the funds for summer and winter reading programs at the library. The McHenry County
4-H Youth Foundation will use the money to offer outstanding 4-H opportunities to encourage 4-H’ers to be helpful, engaged in their communities and leaders in building a better world. “I directed the donation to the Friends Foundation because I worked at the library for 10 years and the Friends Foundation helps raise money to support it,” Kampwerth said. “I directed the addition-
al donation to the 4-H Youth Foundation because both my kids were in 4-H and it is valuable for teaching kids responsibility and leadership.” This year, the Monsanto Fund will invest nearly $6 million in rural America through Grow Communities, which includes double donations for counties impacted by the historic drought. In Illinois, $480,000 is being given across 96 counties.
8NEWS BRIEFS Marengo makes list for top high schools Three McHenry County high schools made the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings as top high schools in the state. Cary-Grove (50), Richmond-Burton (53) and Marengo (61) all made the Illinois rankings, which listed the top 69 high schools in the state. All three schools scored above or near the Illinois average in student-to-teacher ratio, college readiness, math proficiency and reading proficiency. The rankings also found Cary-Grove to be the 1,414th best school in the nation, with Richmond-Burton and Marengo ranking 1,593rd and 1,956th, respectively. The rankings evaluated more than 21,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. U.S. News, along with the American Institutes for Research, analyzed data from the 2010-11 school year for public high schools with sufficient 12thgrade enrollment data. Nebraska was the only state not counted because it did not provide enough data.
Marengo woman charged with endangering child MARENGO – A 25-year-old Marengo woman was charged last week with endangering a child, after police allegedly found her drunk inside a car in her driveway while a child was left alone inside the house. Marengo police responded at 7:20 p.m. April 22 to a reckless
driving report at 1319 N. State St. Police found Sheila Benbennick intoxicated inside her car in the driveway of the home, said Sgt. Rodney Riley. Police also found that Benbennick left a 6-year-old child unattended in the home for about an hour while she was out, Riley said. Benbennick failed a breathalyzer test that reveled her blood alcohol content was over the legal limit of 0.08, he said. Benbennick was charged with endangering the life or health of a child, a Class A misdemeanor; two counts of driving under the influence and improper lane usage. She is scheduled to appear in court May 20.

McHenry County ‘Top 10’ fugitive found in Texas WOODSTOCK – A man listed on the McHenry County sheriff’s Top 10 Fugitive List has been apprehended in Texas more than two years after an arrest warrant was issued for several drug-related charges. Brian E. Bridges, 39, of Midlothian, Texas, was arrested April 22 for production of cannabis sativa plants, manufacturing cannabis, possession of cannabis, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. An arrest warrant was issued for Bridges in March 2011, according to a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office news release. Bridges was believed to have been living in Marengo at that time, but investigators couldn’t locate him and obtained information that he had fled the state. Bridges was placed on the Top 10 Fugitive List in September and was also featured on the Comcast most wanted police blotter in December. Investigators later received information that Bridges was living in Texas, and a joint effort was launched by members of the sheriff’s office and U.S. Marshals Service in Dallas.
