GET TO KNOW: Adi Badlani

ABOVE: Nine-year-old Adi Badlani, a fourth-grader at Brook Forest Elementary School in Oak Brook, recently became the youngest child in Illinois to compete in the National Geographic Bee, held at College of DuPage on April 5. He talks about his passion – geography – in his home April 15.BELOW: Adi poses for a portrait in his home April 15.

About Adi Badlani Age: 9 Residence: Oak Brook Education: Fourth-grader at Brook Forest Elementary School Interests: Science and math

competed twice in the WordMasters Challenge. When Adi was a toddler, his mother gave him a U.S. puzzle map and an atlas. He started reading geography books when he “got bored,” he said. “He has just been reading geography since such an early age that he has just accumulated knowledge over a few years,” said his mother, Vandana. At 2 years old, Adi could

name every state in the U.S. and its capital. When he was 3, he recognized every country on the globe. By 4, he knew their capitals. The trick to learning anything new is to just stick with it and use repetition, said Adi, who knows how to spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. “I think he’s a very hard-working kid,” Vandana said. “Very hard-working and very disciplined.”

OAK BROOK – Adi Badlani is sitting in a room filled with what looks like gems he could have won on the 1990s game show “Legends of the Hidden Temple.” An indoor trampoline with a surrounding net and arcade basketball game are on either side of him, but he isn’t paying those toys any attention. Instead, the 9-year-old is focusing intently on an electronic globe, finding out the population of Syria and Chad by tapping the countries with an attached pointer and listening to the automated recording. A natural sense of curiosity has paid off for the Oak Brook resident. Last month, he was selected as one of 100 fourth- through eighth-graders from Illinois to attend the National Geographic Bee on April 5 at College of DuPage. Adi, who was the youngest in the state to qualify, was accepted after he won a January geography bee at Brook Forest Elementary School and then earned a top score on the National Geographic geography exam. “I was a little nervous, but it was a great experience in my life,” Adi said while continuing to tap the countries on his globe. Adi did well in the National Geographic Bee,but didn’t qualify for the next round. The geography buff is n o s t r a n g e r t o c o m p e t ition – he’s the Brook Forest spelling bee champion and

Hinsdale police consider barriers to reduce crashes By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – It’s not a coincidence but rather a regular occurrence that has prompted the Hinsdale Police Department to try to improve safety. Police are contemplating placing barriers in the Hinsdale business district along South Washington Street after repeated crashes have occurred since 2001. “We’ve seen a number of crashes that have occurred in the 100 block of South Washington on the west side of the street,” said Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom. “Three so far this year were cars that have jumped the curb and struck the buildings.” The Steinway Piano building has been struck twice this year, causing damage to

the main entrance. Bloom brought the issue to the Zoning and Public Safety Committee several months ago, and members asked the department to research options to increase safety. “What we told the Zoning and Public Safety Committee ... was that we would come back with some designs and some cost and get some direction from them if they wanted to move forward with this,” Bloom said. Bloom said what’s unusual is this doesn’t seem to be happening anywhere else in the business district. “The only thing that’s peculiar about that block is it’s uphill, diagonal parking,” he said. “I’m assuming when most people pull into those spaces, they have their foot on the accelerator.”

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – As an expert in fitness, Khaki wanted to make sure her best friend, Cindy Rodkin, was getting the most out of her wall squat. She did what any good canine workout partner would do – placed her paws on her owner’s thighs to add resistance. “It distracts you from how much it hurts your legs,” said Rodkin, laughing. Rodkin, a Clarendon Hills resident, is one of the original members of K9 Fit Club, an exercise club where dogs and their owners lose weight and get healthy. It all takes place near the Sarah Minor – sminor@shawmedia.com corner of East Hinsdale and Katie De Runtz with her dog, Dudley; Cindy Rodkin with her dog, Khaki; and trainer Gabriella Christopher do South Garfield avenues in wall sits April 10 during a K9 Fit Club class. “I was overweight pretty much all throughout my childhood,” Montgomery said. “I basically went to the veterinarian, and he said to me, ‘You know, you’re killing yourself and you’re killing your dog,’ without really saying that.” Montgomery took his more subtle advice to heart and started a diet and exercise plan. She lost more than 130 pounds, and Louie lived a long and healthier life. After realizing how much her dog helped in her weightloss journey, Montgomery wanted to give back to others in the same way. By exercising with her furry best friend, it didn’t seem like a chore – rather, a distraction from the fatigue and pain. “When you’re working out with your dog, you’re sweating, you’re working out like crazy,” she said. “You don’t even think about that because your dog is there beside you, and he’s taking that pain away.” K9 Fit Club has several classes to choose from – in-

losing weight. “We can come up with a thousand excuses to not work out, but how many excuses can you think of to work out?” Houia said. Houia said a pet is a person’s biggest “emotional barometer.” “Your dog, he doesn’t judge you,” Houia said. “He loves you unconditionally. He doesn’t care what you look like.” The program also serves as a benefit to dogs by improving discipline and behavior. Members do lunges while the pups obediently walk by their side, and the dogs release their energy running around cones. “It’s been great for Khaki because she used to bark through the whole hour of class,” Rodkin said. “Now, she’s really learning what we do here and that she should be quiet.” While Montgomery finds her work rewarding, she also remains disturbed by the obesity epidemic. “We’ve made obesity one and the same in our dogs,” she said. “We get people a new leash on life, and it’s changing lives, one dog at a time.”

Are You Starting to See Excessive Dog Hair in Your Home? It’s beginning … the annual shedding of the winter coat of your beloved dog. The winter coat that your pet put on for the winter is beginning to release and allow for the summer coat to come in. This can be a minor inconvenience for some, or a downright blizzard of blowing dog hair for some dog owners – depending on the type of breed and coat. We have an awesome solution for you!!!!! We will give your dog a full spring cleaning treatment using the Furminator De-Shedding system.

This system is specially designed to dramatically reduce the amount of hair you will have in your home. This de-shedding system is a multistep process that uses special de-shedding tools, shampoo, conditioner and drying. This service normally costs anywhere from $20 to $40 extra on top of a regular grooming. But for this ad only, we are offering this service with a regular grooming for FREE. Just to show you the math, a regular grooming runs about $43, and with the de-shedding system, add another $20. This is a total cost of $63 in value. You get it for FREE. What are the catches? Only one… We are offering this to new customers to Belle Aire Grooming. If you have not had the chance to try our services, we would like the

opportunity to win you over with this fantastic offer. If you are new to us, give us a call at

WHEATON – Jacob Nodarse says the murders he committed on March 2, 2010, were unreal. “That’s what it felt like I was in – a nightmare,” Nodarse said during his testimony last week at the DuPage County Courthouse. “My mind registered it the very way your mind would register a nightmare.” Nodarse took the stand in an Jacob o r a n g e j u m p- Nodarse suit as defense attorneys questioned him on everything from his traumatic childhood to his continued drug use up until the time of murdering Jeff, Lori and Michael Kramer at their Darien home in 2010. The 26-year-old former Countryside resident has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the crimes.

Nodarse was calm on the stand. He often sighed, resting his head on his hand as he answered questions from defense attorney Richard Kling. Testimony from Nodarse – considered a star witness in the trial against his friend, Johnny Borizov, who is accused of orchestrating the murders – wrapped on Tuesday. When speaking about the murders, Nodarse said reality left him that day in 2010 while he was parked in a parking lot “waiting for the assigned time” before going to the Kramers’ home. After Nodarse shot the three family members to death, he said he drove to Florida to see his sister.

“I’m driving watching the sunrise when suddenly, I feel really nervous and panicked,” he said. Nodarse said he began to have flashbacks of what happened at 3 that morning when he shot and killed members of the Kramer family. He had a panic attack, then vomited. Later, Nodarse checked the gun he previously had purchased and had on him. “I took out the gun, I took out the clip, and I saw how many rounds were fired,” he said. “That’s when I realized it was real.” Prosecutors allege 31-year-old Johnny Borizov of Willow Springs orchestrated the murders of the Kramer family by manipulating Nodarse through fear tactics and manipulation. At the time of the murders, Borizov was in a bitter custody battle with Angela Kramer – daughter of the slayed Lori and Jeff – over their son, Nicholas, and had a deep hatred for Angela’s

family, prosecutors said. Nodarse said he frequently talked with Borizov on the phone, exchanged texts and went on outings with him and Nicholas before the murders occurred. A month before the Kramers were murdered, Nodarse said Borizov told him to delete all the text messages on his phone but could not say what the messages consisted of. “[Borizov] was careful not to say anything extremely incriminating besides stuff like, ‘Jacob, we have to talk about something immediately,’ ” Nodarse said. Defense attorneys are focusing the blame on Nodarse for the fatal shootings. They claim a combination of frequent substance abuse and abuse suffered as a child contributed to Nodarse’s decision to commit the murders. Nodarse entered a guilty plea in 2011. He faces 45 years to life in prison and will be sentenced after the conclusion of the Borizov trial, which could last another two weeks. Borizov has been charged with murder, conspiracy and solicitation.

An argument against minimum wage Poverty is a pressing issue afflicting our society. Many Americans today believe one way to address it is by increasing the minimum wage. Some believe a lot of people in our country today work hard but still cannot afford some life essentials, such as food, healthcare, child care, etc. Therefore, liberal America wants to impose a law that would demand all workers receive a “living wage” that provides workers money to support themselves and their family. Poverty needs to be addressed, but not by mandating a “living wage.” Idealistically, the minimum wage appears to be a good idea; practically, it has not worked. Most people think of single mothers struggling to get by as the main recipients of minimum wage. In reality, the largest demographic of minimum-wage recipients are 16- to 24-year-olds and middle-class youths. Minimum-wage laws are not needed for this group. The majority of people in this group: 1) Do not have a family to support; 2) Most are already supported by their parent(s). Why do we have a law that primarily supports a group that does not need it? A large number of American youth will start looking for jobs, but if there is a minimum-wage increase, fewer jobs will be available. Also, because companies will be required by law to pay these individuals more than before, they will be looking for people with more experience. Many people in our age group voted for a president who believes in raising the minimum wage. This

Note to readers Hinsdale Central High School students wrote two editorials as part of their general economics course during their study of microeconomics this school year. They were learning about the positive and negative effects of government involvement in labor markets. This week’s editorial is the argument against minimum wage; next week’s is the argument for minimum wage.

is illogical, because in the long run, the minimum wage hurts us — the youth of society — the most. Even though many people start on the bottom of the ladder making minimum wage, most people eventually will make their way up and receive a better paycheck. One of the most important aspects of a minimum-wage job, however, is not the money one earns, but the experience he or she receives from the job. Most minimum-wage jobs teach life skills that will be necessary in future jobs. A minimum-wage law will make it difficult for anyone starting out to get a job and gain the necessary skills. Many businesses will not have the finances to hire new people. The minimum wage clearly reduces employment opportunities and hurts people looking to improve their situation in life.

Autoimmune condition? Living with an autoimmune disorder can afect every part of your life. It keeps you from enjoying the good things in life… time with your kids, grandkids, activities like goling, biking, yard work and gardening. Did you know that leaky gut syndrome is a precursor to an autoimmune disease? Did you know that your gut makes up 80% of your immune system? An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your own body. here is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders, but you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY. My name is Dr. Jefrey E Forzley, with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the whole body and the many systems of the body, integrate their relationships, manage the underlying cause and use natural methods to manage autoimmune disorders.

Are you sufering with any of these autoimmune disorders? • Hashimotos hroiditis • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Graves Disease • Multiple Sclerosis • Scleroderma • Sjogren’s Syndrome • Type 1 Diabetes • Myasthenia Gravis • Ankylosing Spondylitis • Perniscious Anemia

• Lupus • ALS • Psoriasis • Vasculitis • Celiac Disease • Crohn’s Disease • Addison’s Disease • Urticaria (Hives) • Eczema • Raynauds

Medications are not always the long term answer. Medications can give you temporary relief but they DO NOT ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE of your immune imbalance. All medications have side efects. hese side efects can be more detrimental than the original symptoms sometimes.

Did you know that medications to treat autoimmune conditions can WEAKEN your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer? here is a time to use medications but not before a NATURAL way to manage the underlying imbalance. So how do I help people with autoimmune disorders? I use a combination of speciic NEUROLOGICAL protocols and NUTRITION recommendations… Neuro-Metabolic herapy. Your Brain (nervous System) controls all other systems of the body. It controls your immune system. digestive system, endocrine (hormone) system… so if you have an immune system imbalance or autoimmune condition, evaluating and managing the nervous system is required for optimal improvement.

Your immune system. here are 2 parts to the front line defense of your immune system… TH1 (white blood cells) and TH2 (antibody response). hese 2 parts should work in balance together. But when you are sufering from an autoimmune disorder, one part is out of balance (dominant). his leads to an imbalance in TH3 which in turn leads to an autoimmune response.

Testimonials I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (autoimmune thyroid) three years ago. My endocrinologist recommended surgery to remove my thyroid and put me on medication for the rest of my life. I searched for an alternative treatment to save my thyroid and found Dr. Forzley. hrough comprehensive lab testing he found out what was causing my immune system to attack my thyroid. I have been receiving treatments and following his recommendations exactly and my lab numbers are now normal, my endocrinologist is happy, my medication has been reduced in half and I feel better. I highly recommend Dr. Forzley and his natural approach. Samantha R. I sufered from unbearable itching caused by Hives (chronic autoimmune Urticaria) for over 33 years. Steroid medications helped the symptoms temporarily but the side efects were bad. Ater an in-depth blood and metabolic analysis, Dr. Forzley found the cause of my problem. Ater 4-5 months of strictly following his recommendations, my hives are completely gone and I feel great. Cheryl P. If your immune system is not managed properly, your condition can worsen, result in a poor quality of life, cause a shortening of the length of your life and cause other autoimmune disorders. Holistic herapy can manage autoimmune conditions by: 1) inding and balancing the underlying cause. 2) lowering the self destructive efects of the immune system. 3) using natural therapies that work with your body.

I can work with your immune system NATURALLY and balance the TH1, TH2, TH3 and TH17. You can never be cured of an autoimmune disorder. BUT, you can get symptom relief and calm down the immune attack on you own body. You must get a detailed immune system evaluation followed by speciic recommendation based on those tests. Guess what stimulates TH1?Vitamin C. But if you are TH1 dominant, Taking vitamin C will WORSEN your immune response. hat’s right worsen. We need to identify which part of your immune system is dominant in order to calm down the immune system. I don’t treat or cure autoimmune disorders. By using speciic neurological and nutritional protocols, I help to decrease your body’s inlammation, detoxify your body, balance TH1, TH2, TH3 and TH17 which NATURALLY boosts your immune system. THAT is how I address autoimmune disorders.

Clarendon Hills hosts second workshop for plan By DANNY CIAMPRONE

Voice your opinion

dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – More than 50 Clarendon Hills residents shared their visions for what their community should look like in the future during a recent community workshop. It was the second meeting for Clarendon Hills residents and officials to discuss what the future of their downtown will include. Some of the designs call for improvements to the downtown area served by the commuter train, and better ways to attract and retain business, increase tax revenue and enhance the character of Clarendon Hills. “This is a long-term plan, not something that happens overnight,” said Dan Ungerleider, director of community development, who led the

To contribute to the discussion, visit the village on Facebook at facebook.com/VillageofCH, follow it on Twitter at twitter.com/ villageofch or check out the village on Instagram at instagram.com/ villageofch. April 24 workshop. “We need everybody’s input.” To start the workshop, Ungerleider had residents vote “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”-style using touch key pads to answer a series of questions about what was most important to them when designing the downtown. Some of the most popular answers included making sure the new downtown was inviting, business-friendly and kept a careful balance of modernization, but with a small-town feel.

Residents then got together in groups to write down words describing the future of downtown Clarendon Hills and presented them to the crowd. Words such as “accessible,” “traditional” and “modern” were the some of the most popular. Resident Jason Lewis said he would like the town to be more photogenic and have displays that attract people there, much like that of Chicago, where he used to live. “I envisioned Prospect Avenue to be the Michigan Av-

enue of the suburbs,” Lewis said. “The downtown should be the epicenter of the community.” The information Ungerleider obtained during that meeting now will go to a series of committees for review before putting together a final downtown plan. A recommendation will be brought to the Village Board for approval. Village Manager Randy Recklaus said it will be the responsibility of these committees, as well as residents, to put the ideas expressed during the workshops into finer details. “If you want an impact on this downtown, this is the time to speak up,” Recklaus said to the crowd. “The less people involved, the less meaningful this project is going to be. Stand up and be a part of this process.”

Simple things like showing up on time and returning phone calls which is often lacking in the remodeling industry. I have chosen to keep the business small so I am involved in every job with my three long time installers. By doing this we have become well known as experts in minor kitchen remodeling.” Kitchen Tune-Up also offers cabinetry upgrades such as glass doors, tipout trays, soft-closing dovetail drawers, and full extension rollouts as well as counters in laminate, solid surfaces, granite and quartz (Cambria) “The Best Counter Top Around.” When questioned about any regrets, Marty replies, “We often get calls to update the kitchen when the owner is ready to sell. The next day, a local resident discovered the gun and alerted police, who recovered it. Hernandez, 43, was sentenced to two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for her role. She pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing justice last week. Cuellar next will appear in court June 17.

This year, the park district has announced that Lisa Griffith, mezzo-soprano, will sing the National Anthem before the race. Griffith has been teaching Music Together at the Oak Brook Park District since 1997. This class provides young students with the basic musical skills needed to enjoy participating in school and social music activity, as well as future instrument study. Griffith also is a voice teacher at the Music Institute of Chicago, and director of Music Together of Oak Brook and Elmhurst.

Adventist Hinsdale completes upgrades HINSDALE – Adventist Hinsdale Hospital has received a $60,682 reimbursement check from Nicor Gas for participation in an energy efficiency program run by the utility. The hospital received the check for installation of a high-efficiency burner on its third boiler. It previously had undertaken installation of equipment on two boilers in 2007. Participation in the Nicor program allowed for completion of the final boiler, bringing all of the hospital’s steam systems to peak efficiency, according to a news release. The hospital has undertaken several energy efficiency measures since 2007. All of these changes have resulted in significant reductions in monthly gas and electric spending, saving $588,183 each year, according to the release.

ComEd volunteers help build green homes Volunteers worked with Habitat for Humanity on Prairie Green project By JERRY MOORE jmoore@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Planners of one development near Glen Ellyn are striving to put more energy into constructing some new homes than will be spent running them. Representatives of DuPage Habitat for Humanity have been working on their Prairie Green project for several months. Sarah Brachle Wagner, executive director of the group, said homes for 12 families will eventually be built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards. The development is on the west side of Illinois Route 53 just north of Butterfield Road in unincorporated DuPage County near Glen Ellyn. “Prairie Green will consist of 12 sustainable homes that are developed by DuPage Habitat for Humanity and sold to qualified buyers,” Wagner said. “There will be a 0 percent interest rate on the mortgage. … And the homes are designed to be energy efficient, so this will also save the homeowners money.” This past weekend, DuPage Habitat for Humanity staff members received some help investing sweat equity in their project from energy firm Commonwealth Edison. The utility sent about a dozen of its employees to the worksite April 27 to mark National Volunteer Week. “For the seventh consecutive year, ComEd participated in National Volunteer Week. Our work with the DuPage Habitat for Humanity Home Build was one of approximately 150 volunteer events throughout the Exelon family of companies, to demonstrate our commitment to serving the communities where customers and employees live and work,” said Martha Swaney of ComEd’s communications department. “Service is a part of our DNA at ComEd; it’s what

Colin McAuliffe for Suburban Life

Alex Nordin of Exelon measures a 2x4 to be cut for a support piece. drives us. We are active in our communities year-round, giving time and energy. In fact, ComEd employees volunteered 15,000 hours of time in 2011, the equivalent of 375 40hour work weeks.” Construction has been underway for the first five homes of the project since last fall, Wagner said. Families selected to occupy these homes must meet specific criteria, she said, including: • Demonstrate a need for affordable housing; • Have the ability to pay the mortgage; • Must be willing to participate in the DuPage Habitat for Humanity program by donating 250 hours of sweat equity (either helping to build homes or working in the group’s retail store) and attending classes; and • Must already either live or work in DuPage County. “These will be three- to four-bedroom townhomes, each between 1,500 and 1,650 square feet in space,” Wagner said. “They will be two-story structure. They won’t be fancy, but they’ll be well-built.” Developing sustainable homes is just as important for the families who will move into the residences as it is for the environment, Wagner said. Utility bills are second only to mortgages in being the most expensive part of owning

a home, according to Wagner. For people who need affordable housing, such costs must be contained as much as possible, she said. LEED certification ensures a building has been constructed to certain standards employing green technologies and environmentally friendly measures. The rating system was devised by the U.S. Green Building Council. Homes designed to save energy will be less expensive to operate, Wagner said. The first five homes of the Prairie Green development should be competed by June, Wagner said. The remainder of the homes will be finished by the end of 2014. As a Christian and ecumenical organization, DuPage Habitat for Humanity draws many of its volunteers from local churches and religious organizations, Wagner said. But the group makes use of volunteer help from a variety of sources. DuPage Habitat for Humanity uses between 2,000 and 2,500 volunteers every year, according to Wagner. “It’s a real mix,” Wagner said. “We’re happy from wherever our volunteers come from. … We’ve certainly benefited from ComEd’s help. They are a financial sponsor of Habitat for Humanity as well as a source of volunteer help.”

Restaurant reviews

Come for the crepes, stay for atmosphere at Suzette’s WHEATON – There’s a little bit of France on Front Street in Wheaton. More than a little, actually. When you stop by Suzette’s Creperie, you don’t just get a menu chock full of Gallic recipes. You’re immersed in a French dining experience. French cuisine, of course, is famed for dishes that feature such subtle flavors that it takes a refined palate to truly appreciate all the various shadings. I don’t know if I detected every last hint of seasoning in my meal at Suzette’s, but I came away more than pleased, nonetheless. At the attached patisserie – French for “pastry shop” – you can get just about every croissant, quiche and mousse your heart could desire. Need a quick breakfast? Order “le petit dejeuner” in one of four varieties: Française, Americano, Italiano or Español. The dining room at Suzette’s is warm and inviting, with standard, attractive seating interspersed with giant upholstered

chairs at intimate, two-person tables. Two ladies who sat at such a table near us apparently had ordered the English or French tea service, as servers stopped by periodically with little delights for them to peruse and choose from. My dining companion and I opted to order from the “bistro-style entree menu,” when we dropped by on a recent Saturday. My dining companion, who seldom misses an opportunity to pass up crepes or seafood, went straight for the salmon crepe, which features fresh salmon sautéed in butter, placed in a crepe and “laced with Tarragon Cream Sauce,” according to the menu. I was in the mood for something spicy, and the crab cakes with habanero lime sauce suited my mood perfectly. The crab cakes themselves are mild and lightly seasoned to enhance the flavor of the crab meat. A few bites without the sauce were perfectly enjoyable. But the sauce added a whole

’nother layer – somehow fiery and soothing at the same time; it enhanced the flavor of the crab cakes without drowning it out. It was fantastic, and I definitely will get it again. It was served with some mixed greens and whipped potatoes that complemented the main dish very nicely.

Suzette’s has a lot of different menus for different situations. They’ve got a breakfast menu, a crepes menu, a brunch menu, the bistro menu, a tea menu, a catering menu … you get the idea. This is a restaurant where a lot of thought has clearly gone into every aspect,

GreenMan Theatre to ponder ‘After the End of the World’ SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA In a fitting coda for GreenMan Theatre’s ninth season, the troupe presents a collection of short plays and one-acts about beginnings, endings and other apocalyptic scenarios. Titled “After the End of the World,” the nine plays are helmed by six directors, with a combined cast of 20 actors spanning the Cook and DuPage suburbs. Some of the plays are enjoying world premieres, while others are from wellknown playwrights such as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter. GreenMan board member Carl Zeitler of Glen Ellyn shares the thoughts of his fellow playwrights and directors. He notes Cory Sandrock of Elmhurst directs “Castle,” whose premise deals with three couples who like to reenact famous literary characters or writers. Each pair thinks they have booked a remote castle all to themselves for their dream reenactment before the world is supposed to end. But comic situations arise when they discover the castle has booked them all together.

York Road, Elmhurst When: 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays, May 3 to 19 How much: $17, $15 for seniors and students; industry discount Sunday, May 5; www.greenmantheatre.org Sandrock relishes the directorial challenge. “Through rehearsals, the cast is embracing the eccentricities of each character, and they are enjoying the process of creating each over-the-top personality,” he says. Palatine playwright Cathleen Ann explains her inspiration. “I wrote ‘Castle’ to poke some fun at the idea of ordinary people being prompted to indulge in extraordinary adventures in response to the threat of the world ending,” she says.

The nine plays run from humorous to serious. “And Then What?” – written and directed by Zeitler – falls into the reflective category. The story deals with two recently deceased strangers being led to an afterlife waiting room by a mysterious host. As they await news of their fate, they start a conversation about happier times and their ideas of heaven and hell. Local cast member is Renata Allelujka of Downers Grove. “I was intrigued by the prospect of showing real people in an unreal situation,” Zeitler says. “It’s interesting that we always hope that the departed rest in peace … What if the departed had to cope with finding peace, too?” Sandrock also directs “Goodbye, Oscar” by Romulus Linney. “I was introduced to this script in college,” he recalls. “After enjoying my work with it as an actor, the script stuck in my memory and seemed to be a perfect fit for our after-the-end-of-the-world theme.” In the play, Oscar Wilde, lying on his deathbed in Paris, is visited by a young gentleman who brings memories, or

The young gentleman (Brett Snyder, left) consoles Oscar Wilde (Duard Mosley) in “Goodbye, Oscar.” dreams, to life. As they explore these fleeting moments, Oscar contemplates the chances he lost in life, as well as his hopes for the future. “I am especially intrigued by the fact that it is never clear whether the young gentleman character is an angel or a devil or something else,” Sandrock says. “I am also a huge fan of Oscar Wilde, so a play that explores his death is immediately interesting to me.”

Hinsdale Central center fielder Chris Botsoe catches a fly ball against Hindsdale South last month.

‘He’s the igniter’ By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – It can be difficult enough changing high schools. One would think being the only sophomore on a varsity baseball team expected to contend in one of the most competitive conferences in the state would make it more difficult. That’s not the case for Chris Botsoe. The Hinsdale Central sophomore is relatively new to the school after attending St. Laurence his freshman

By the numbers Chris Botsoe stats through Monday: .491 Batting average 28 Hits 20 Runs scored 11 Runs batted in

year, but being a part of the Red Devils baseball team has helped make adjusting to a new school a little bit easier. “I was 50-50 about playing for the team at the beginning of the year because I didn’t know how it would go,” Bot-

soe said. “But a couple guys, like Christian Bokich and Adam Dressler, told me how good they were going to be, and they wanted me to be a part of it with them.” Botsoe hasn’t just been a part of it; he’s been a big part of the Red Devils’ success this season. The only sophomore on the team, he is Central’s starting center fielder and has committed just one error this year. He also plays a crucial role offensively as the leadoff hitter, where he leads the team in batting average, on-base percentage (.545) and stolen

bases (11), as well as hits and runs scored. “I think my defense and my speed are the two biggest things I bring to the team,” Botsoe said. “I’ve been hitting it pretty well, too, I guess.” After a rough stretch in which the Red Devils lost four of five games to slip to 4-4 overall, they climbed to 11-6 as of Monday afternoon. “I think all the talent is coming together and we’ve been playing real well,” said Botsoe. It took a little convincing, but Botsoe is happy to be on the diamond. And the Red

Devils are happy to have a talented player that already has committed to play college ball at Louisville; he committed in January. Botsoe’s skills and consistency in the field and at the plate have given head coach Tom Dorrance one less thing to think about in his return to the dugout this season. “He’s a natural leader and he wasn’t shy about fitting right in,” Dorrance said. “He’s the igniter for us and gets us going. He’s a special player, and we’re thrilled to have him. What a great addition.”

Big-time Big Ten rivalry Bunting picks Michigan, sparks immediate rivalry with MSU-bound teammate By JASON ROSSI

By the numbers

jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Ian Bunting and Brian Allen are teammates now, but before long they will be on different sides of the one the most heated college football rivalries in the country. Bunting, a heavily recruited 6-foot-6, 200-pound tight end, committed to Michigan on April 23, just days after lineman Allen chose Michigan State. They haven’t wasted much time ramping up the rivalry. “It already started a little bit,” Bunting said. “We’ve been giving each other a hard time, but it’s all good natured.” The day Bunting committed, Allen walked to his house with a present – a Michigan T-shirt that Allen no longer needed as a Michigan State recruit. That’s where some of that good-natured ribbing started. “We actually both wear the same size T-shirt,” Bunting said of Allen, a 6-2, 275-pound lineman. “We’re both XXL, but we just fill it out a little differently.”

Ian Bunting’s season stats in 2012: 4: Receiving touchdowns 68: Long catch in yards 412: Receiving yards

Bunting received scholarship offers from nearly every Big Ten school as well as national powerhouses like Notre Dame, Florida, USC, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas A&M. Having his choice of schools was flattering, but Michigan emerged as the clear-cut favorite. “It was definitely a blessing to be recruited like that. It was exciting and a really cool opportunity, and I am very lucky to have gone through the process,” Bunting said. “Michigan just felt like home. The coaches and the players had a good sense of family, and that’s one of my favorite parts of football – the brotherhood you form with your teammates. “And Michigan is obviously a program and a great school. It’s a place I would want to go to school even if I

Robinson has moved on and Bunting said the offense will have more of a pro-style look that heavily involves the tight end. That transformation already started as tight end Devin Funchess led

Michigan with five touchdown receptions last season. “I feel like the offense is going to be really strong,” Bunting said. “I like the way they used Funchess last year. The way they use the tight end really opens up opportunities for me.” Choosing a great team and a great school was one aim for Bunting during his recruiting process – so was wrapping it up before the Red Devils’ sea-

son begins in the fall. “It was important to me to make my decision,” he said. “I’d rather not have to worry about anything other than having fun with my teammates next season. The less distractions you have, the better. I just want to be able to hang out in the summer and work out with my friends and teammates rather than having to go on visits.”

South baseball suffers another 1-run loss in 9 innings By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The recent trend of solid pitching continued for Hinsdale South’s baseball team, but another trend ended Wednesday. After a rocky start to the game, pitcher Jon Uba yielded just two hits over his final four innings of work. But the Hornets’ five-game winning streak was halted with a 3-2, nine-inning loss to visiting Stagg. “Another one-run loss for

Game box Stagg 3 Hinsdale South 2 Leading hitters: HS — Joe Oehmen 1-for-2, BB, R; Joe Jabolnski 1-for-3, SB, R; Grant Morford 1-for-3, 3B the Hornets,” said Hornets coach Paul Hoel, whose team has lost four of its six losses by just one run. “The good news is we’re in every game.

We had our opportunities to win today, but they made the plays they had to make.” Uba surrendered four hits in the first three innings and allowed the lead-off batter to reach in each inning, but he limited the Chargers to single runs in the second and third. South (16-6 overall) leveled the score with two runs in the third. Joe Oehmen and Joe Jablonski singled to start the inning, and D.J. Deolitsis bunted his way to first to

load the bases with no outs. Mike Rizzo’s sacrifice groundout scored Oehmen and Don Buonavolanto’s groundout brought home Brian Hoel, running in place of catcher Jablonski. Deolitsis went airborn to try to score on a wild pitch, but the ball caromed off the backstop right back to home plate, where he was tagged on the bottom of the foot as he leaped in the air. “The pitcher and the catcher were standing in front of the plate, so I really didn’t

have anywhere else to go,” Deolitsis said. Five scoreless innings followed before an error plated an unearned run for Stagg in the top of the ninth. The Hornets went down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game. Mike Mullaney allowed one hit in two innings of relief but was saddled with the loss. “Mike and Jon both pitched well enough to win,” Hoel said. “We hit the ball hard, but we hit it at people and they made the plays when we did.”

Smith said, “but because both teams are so well organized and defensively focused, it was a struggle. They showed us some new things.”

Initial complaint against Wardle made public By JASON ROSSI

More online

jrossi@shawmedia.com GREEN BAY, Wis. – As an independent investigation into accusations of mistreatment by University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball coach Brian Wardle continues, the player who made the initial complaint against Wardle has made his accusations public. Ryan Bross, a former UWGB walk-on who plans to transfer to Concordia University for next school year, told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that Wardle, a former standout player at Hinsdale Central High School, repeatedly used several profane and vulgar terms toward him, forced him to participate in preseason workout drills even when he wasn’t feeling well, and encouraged him to

have sex in order to become a better player. According to UWGB communications director Chris Sampson, the university is not aware of any other complaints against Wardle. “The first couple complaints from Bross and Brennan Cougill went directly to the Chancellor’s office,” Sampson said. “Anything else would go directly to the investigator.” Wardle, who has declined to speak specifically about the investigation, did speak to the Press-Gazette about Bross’

complaints being made public. “I can assure you the well-being of my players is foremost in my mind at all times,” Wardle said in a statement made to the Press-Gazette. “I cannot comment on the specific allegations under federal privacy laws. I can say the version of events … is inaccurate. I have fully cooperated with the independent investigator, as have our players and coaches. I fully expect that the eyewitness accounts to these allegations … will contradict the version (being reported).” Bross also said that Wardle interfered with his class schedule. Hoping to major in human biology as a precursor to a medical degree, Bross said Wardle told his academic adviser that Bross was prohibited from taking a biology class that would have count-

ed toward his major. Bross also said Wardle blocked him from taking a chemistry class during the second semester. Green Bay attorney Joseph Nicks, who is leading the investigation, interviewed Bross Monday, according to the Press-Gazette report. Several other players and former players were interviewed during the past two weeks. It is unclear how many more interviews Nicks still has to conduct before his investigation ends. Wardle remains in the role of head coach as Nicks’ investigation continues. Sampson said Wednesday there is no specific timetable for the investigation to finish. In his interview with the Press-Gazette, Bross said that he did not speak up about the mistreatment sooner because he was afraid he would be

kicked off the team or have something else happen to him. Complaints of Wardle’s alleged behavior came to light when Bross’ parents sent an email to UWGB administrators April 11. The parents of a second player, Brennan Cougill, also alleged mistreatment in an email sent to UWGB Chancellor Thomas Harden four days later, at which time the university hired Nicks to conduct the investigation. Wardle led Hinsdale Central to back-to-back state tournament appearances before graduating in 1997. He was the youngest men’s basketball coach in Division I at age 30 when he was hired in 2010. Wardle, 33, has compiled a 4749 record in three seasons as head coach at UWGB and is coming off an 18-16 campaign.

HINSDALE — It was only the first step toward a larger goal, but what a step. Hinsdale Central’s girls soccer team went a full 80 minutes and more to score a 2-1 win over West Suburban Silver-rival Lyons Township on Tuesday after the game went to penalty kicks to settle what was a 1-1 tie. “The game was supposed to start at 7, but it didn’t begin until 7:30 and we didn’t leave the field until 10,” Central coach Michael Smith said. “It was a long night, but the rewards of a victory made it sweeter.” The win Tuesday put the Red Devils ahead of both the LT and York in the race for the WSS crown. The Lions and Dukes both have one loss in conference, but Central was scheduled to play at York Thursday in a de facto WSS title game. TEACHERS

ARE GREAT! hey give you Band-Aids when you scuff your elbow on the playground. They give you high-fives when you did well on a test. They let you know when you aren’t behaving as well as you could, and they give you gold stars when you earn an A. They help you learn how to get along with classmates, how to keep a friend, and how to grow into a smart and responsible human being. They spend almost as much time with you as your family, and their first thought every day is how they can make you into a better person and help you be grow and learn.

T

Who are these everyday superheroes? Teachers. Teachers give their lives to helping their students learn to live happy and healthy lives, and are some of the most important members of your community. National Teacher Appreciation Day is May 7 this year, so take the time to recognize the hard (and important!) work your teacher does every day. — By Anne Raih, More Content Now

Now it’s your turn

Five ways to recognize a teacher: 1. Give every teacher in your school a high-five! 2. Let a teacher know about your favorite thing you have learned in her class. 3. Give your favorite teacher an apple for his desk. 4. Write a letter telling a teacher how much you appreciate him or her. 5. Draw a picture of your favorite teacher.

They say that one of the best ways to learn something is to teach it. In the spirit of National Teacher Day, it’s your turn to create a lesson plan. 1. Pick a subject. Make sure it is a subject that is important to learn about (consider science, math, art, reading or social studies), and is something you’re interested in. If

you like science, you could choose to teach a unit on a dinosaur you would like to learn about. If you like history, you could choose to study the pyramids in Egypt. If you need help picking a subject, ask a teacher.

3. Put it together. Make a list of the five most important things you learned about the subject. After you list each item, write a few short sentences describing why each item is important to learn.

2. Research. Learn all you can about the subject you would like to teach. Go to the library, use the Internet or even look in one of your textbooks. Keep notes on the most important things you’ve learned.

4. Teach it. Teach your findings to someone! If your teacher agrees, you can stand up in front of your class to let your classmates in on your findings. You can also present to someone in your family, or even a friend.
