LEMONT – The Lemont Junior Women’s Club celebrated two decades of nonprofit service work April 26 at its 20th anniversary gala. LJWC members dressed their best for a formal evening at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club. The Junior Women’s Club is a philanthropic organiza-

tion dedicated to volunteer work and fundraising. Club members collectively donate more than 7,000 hours of service and $30,000 a year, according to the LJWC website. Past projects have included partnering with the Lemont Park District to build a playground in Centennial Park and supporting local food pantries.

proving an amended budget for Fiscal 2013. The policy, which outlines indicators of district financial health, states that the board must strive to maintain a revenue-to-fund budget balance ratio of 20 percent, according to district officials. On April 16, board members voted to consider an amended 2013 budget that would lower the revenue-to-fund balance ratio to 18 percent. Board member Al Malley abstained from the vote, while board vice president Kevin Doherty voted against the measure. The low ratio is due to a $140,000 increase in transportation fund expenditures, according to administrators, caused partially by the need for District 113A to pay back two years of state reimbursements in 2013, instead of one, as was originally anticipated. Heightened costs in special education transportation and fuel also played a role in lowering the balance ratio, administrators said. District administrators recommended the permanent transfer of $200,000 from the Operations and Maintenance

Fund to the Transportation Fund to remedy the potential deficit. The board is expected to vote on the fund transfer during its May 21 meeting. Although transportation costs have caused a revenue-to-fund ratio that does not align with optimal policy standards, overall expenditures will decrease to $66,000 in the context of the amended budget, administrators told the board. The anticipated budget balance is $8.3 million, according to district Business Manager Barbara Germany. Expenditures would decrease under the amended budget because the district will not spend $200,000 in Education Funds that were originally budgeted to hire five teachers. The 2013 budget is being amended because transportation costs brought the district 13 percent above budget. Whenever a change of more than 10 percent occurs in the context of a district’s budget, it must be amended and filed with the state. “We can’t not let this happen,” said board member Lisa Wright.

Lemont traffic safety officer’s efforts stand out on day of floods By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lemont Police Department traffic safety officer Rob Raspanti had seen floods, but not like this. On April 18, in the midst of severe thunderstorms and serious flooding, Raspanti was called out at 5 a.m. to direct traffic at 135th Street and Archer Avenue, which was closed due to flooding. Sometime after 7 a.m., a car trying to turn around was pulled by a current toward the shoulder of the road. After calling in the incident, Raspanti noticed the car had become half submerged, ran into the water and pulled open the car door to help the driver get out.

Raspanti later was treated for exposure and exertion but said he had recovered by the next day. He is scheduled to be recognized by local officials at an upcoming Lemont Village Board meeting.

What was going through your mind at the time leading up to the accident and when you went to aid the driver? Initially, I was surprised because we had barricades in place to warn motorists the road was closed because of flooding. ... Once I noticed the car was sinking more, that’s when I made the decision to go out there and help him out of the vehicle before it

Thompson and the Lemont Junior Women’s Club have been partnering with the Lemont Police Department, the Lemont Fire Protection District and other organiza-

tions for years to teach safety to local youth. The LJWC established the Lemont Safety Village in 1995. The miniature town, complete with a classroom facility for educating children about fire preparedness, animal safety and poison awareness, was the result of fundraising efforts by Lemont residents and nonprofit organizations.

LEMONT – For Therese Thompson, a sergeant with the Lemont Police Department and founding member of the Lemont Junior Women’s Club, safety always is a top priority, and no more so than where her two college-aged daughters are concerned. That’s why Thompson has worked in recent years to develop Campus Fighting Chance, a three-hour course that prepares high school juniors and seniors to address the nonacademic challenges of college. Participants learn how to handle everything from ATM safety and identity theft to acquaintance rape, stalking and substance abuse. “They need to have the knowledge,” said Clare Pftotenhauer, an Illinois state trooper who worked with Thompson to conceptualize the program and teaches travel strategy for Campus Fighting Chance. “They have to be reconditioned as to how to react.” Thompson was motivated to organize the course after hearing about the difficult situations her oldest daughter, now 22, experienced during her three years working as a

LEMONT – At its board meeting Tuesday, Lemont High School District 210 seated its recently re-elected board of education members and also elected three individuals to twoyear terms as officers. Mike Kardas, George Rimbo and Mike Shackel – all of whom won seats on the District 210 Board of Education in the April election – were sworn in for four-year terms that end in 2017. All will begin their second terms. They will continue to serve on the seven-member board with Pam Driscoll, Beverly Marzec, Mark McMahon and Mary Tally, who were not up for re-election in 2013.

Lemont High School community bound by affection for Andy Podczerwinski and his recovery School districts have to deal with a lot of state and federal mandates. Some can be checked off the list easily, and others take years to fulfill. Sometimes, however, a school community can be so moved by a cause that it slowly imposes a distinct mandate to support one of its own. It is in that spirit that the Lemont High School community has come together to support Andrew Podczerwinski. Last weekend, after much planning by the school’s Wellness Committee, Lemont High School hosted the Walk with Andrew 5K on a comfortably cool Sunday morning. The sun we’ve clamored for much COMMUNITY of the spring peaked through by late VOICE morning, but the day’s true beauty came in the form of hundreds of Mary supporters – including students, Ticknor staffers, parents and community members, among others – wearing their bright orange and white shirts in solidarity as they moved from campus through the neighboring streets. Andy’s challenges have been detailed extensively. As he and his friends scurried for shelter from a quickly developing storm last summer, strong winds caused a tree to fall on Andy and classmate Chase Kobilca. Chase was fortunate to escape with a broken foot, but Andy’s injuries were life-threatening. He initially was told that he never would walk again. Life for Andy and his family since that time has been a whirlwind of surgical beds, doctors’ offices and therapy sessions. However, Andy’s attitude during this period of great challenge has been infectious. Once he learned that his injuries did not sever his spinal cord, he set forth on his journey to walk again. As Andy himself often has said, “I always find a way.” Andy does not carry bitterness as he wheels from class to class. He has maintained his honor roll status, and his group of friends only has swelled since his return to school in September. Frankly, Andy is just plain likeable. He has attacked his recovery with great energy and has been overwhelmed with the support he has seen since that fateful day last summer. What Andy may not realize, however, is that his teachers, classmates and the rest of the community are getting much more out of this relationship than he is. Unlike those mandates that schools have to do, supporting Andy’s recovery is something we have been moved to do. After all, no state or federal mandate has ever gotten students and teachers to school willingly on a Sunday morning. Andy did.

Amanda Ruban knows how to work toward achieving her goals. For many years, she has loved running. And now she has some bragging rights in her home community of Lemont. Ruban, an 18-year-old senior at Lemont High School, was the highest ranking Lemont resident in the village’s recent Advocate Good Samaritan Quarryman Challenge 5K. She took second place in the women’s division, completing the race in 24:01. The Lemont Fire Protection District recently received a $12,150 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to information from the office of U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-3rd District, of Western Springs. The district will use the funds to purchase a new thermal imaging camera, which will provide greater visibility for firefighters trying to identify victims and flames in smoke-filled rooms. Grant money also will go toward the purchase of a specialized washing machine that is capable of cleaning fire response and hazmat gear. Kudos to the fire protection district for obtaining some well-deserved funds.

Come for the crepes, stay for atmosphere at Suzette’s WHEATON – There’s a little bit of France on Front Street in Wheaton. More than a little, actually. When you stop by Suzette’s Creperie, you don’t just get a menu chock full of Gallic recipes. You’re immersed in a French dining experience. French cuisine, of course, is famed for dishes that feature such subtle flavors that it takes a refined palate to truly appreciate all the various shadings. I don’t know if I detected every last hint of seasoning in my meal at Suzette’s, but I came away more than pleased, nonetheless. At the attached patisserie – French for “pastry shop” – you can get just about every croissant, quiche and mousse your heart could desire. Need a quick breakfast? Order “le petit dejeuner” in one of four varieties: Française, Americano, Italiano or Español. The dining room at Suzette’s is warm and inviting, with standard, attractive seating interspersed with giant upholstered

chairs at intimate, two-person tables. Two ladies who sat at such a table near us apparently had ordered the English or French tea service, as servers stopped by periodically with little delights for them to peruse and choose from. My dining companion and I opted to order from the “bistro-style entree menu,” when we dropped by on a recent Saturday. My dining companion, who seldom misses an opportunity to pass up crepes or seafood, went straight for the salmon crepe, which features fresh salmon sautéed in butter, placed in a crepe and “laced with Tarragon Cream Sauce,” according to the menu. I was in the mood for something spicy, and the crab cakes with habanero lime sauce suited my mood perfectly. The crab cakes themselves are mild and lightly seasoned to enhance the flavor of the crab meat. A few bites without the sauce were perfectly enjoyable. But the sauce added a whole

’nother layer – somehow fiery and soothing at the same time; it enhanced the flavor of the crab cakes without drowning it out. It was fantastic, and I definitely will get it again. It was served with some mixed greens and whipped potatoes that complemented the main dish very nicely.

Suzette’s has a lot of different menus for different situations. They’ve got a breakfast menu, a crepes menu, a brunch menu, the bistro menu, a tea menu, a catering menu … you get the idea. This is a restaurant where a lot of thought has clearly gone into every aspect,

GreenMan Theatre to ponder ‘After the End of the World’ SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA In a fitting coda for GreenMan Theatre’s ninth season, the troupe presents a collection of short plays and one-acts about beginnings, endings and other apocalyptic scenarios. Titled “After the End of the World,” the nine plays are helmed by six directors, with a combined cast of 20 actors spanning the Cook and DuPage suburbs. Some of the plays are enjoying world premieres, while others are from wellknown playwrights such as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter. GreenMan board member Carl Zeitler of Glen Ellyn shares the thoughts of his fellow playwrights and directors. He notes Cory Sandrock of Elmhurst directs “Castle,” whose premise deals with three couples who like to reenact famous literary characters or writers. Each pair thinks they have booked a remote castle all to themselves for their dream reenactment before the world is supposed to end. But comic situations arise when they discover the castle has booked them all together.

Palatine playwright Cathleen Ann explains her inspiration. “I wrote ‘Castle’ to poke some fun at the idea of ordinary people being prompted to indulge in extraordinary adventures in response to the threat of the world ending,” she says.

The nine plays run from humorous to serious. “And Then What?” – written and directed by Zeitler – falls into the reflective category. The story deals with two recently deceased strangers being led to an afterlife waiting room by a mysterious host. As they await news of their fate, they start a conversation about happier times and their ideas of heaven and hell. Local cast member is Renata Allelujka of Downers Grove. “I was intrigued by the prospect of showing real people in an unreal situation,” Zeitler says. “It’s interesting that we always hope that the departed rest in peace … What if the departed had to cope with finding peace, too?” Sandrock also directs “Goodbye, Oscar” by Romulus Linney. “I was introduced to this script in college,” he recalls. “After enjoying my work with it as an actor, the script stuck in my memory and seemed to be a perfect fit for our after-the-end-of-the-world theme.” In the play, Oscar Wilde, lying on his deathbed in Paris, is visited by a young gentleman who brings memories, or

As they explore these fleeting moments, Oscar contemplates the chances he lost in life, as well as his hopes for the future. “I am especially intrigued by the fact that it is never clear whether the young gentleman character is an angel or a devil or something else,” Sandrock says. “I am also a huge fan of Oscar Wilde, so a play that explores his death is immediately interesting to me.”

But the Lemont High School graduate was also realistic, realizing that offseason surgery to his shoulder that limited his exposure to teams at the next level could be a deterrent.

being signed as a free agent by the Houston Texans. “I was hoping to get drafted, but I definitely understood that I might not,” Pocic said. “I started getting calls late in the sixth round from O-line coaches from different teams who said they had interest but weren’t sure if I would be picked because of the team’s needs. “So watching the seventh round was nerve-wracking, not knowing if it was going

to happen. Then literally five minutes after the draft, I talked to my agent, and we decided on the Texans. I went from sad about not being drafted to excited about the opportunity.” Pocic said picking the Texans was an easy one. “Probably the biggest thing when you are undrafted,” he said, “is looking for the best opportunity to go in and make the team, make the 53-man roster. In talking with the Texans, they don’t have a back-up cen-

ter. The O-line coach made it clear to me that I could come in and be a back-up right away. “Now it’s up to me to prove that I can play the position and be a valuable bench guy for the team. It’s a great opportunity for me.” Currently training in Lemont, Pocic will head to the team’s rookie camp on May 9. By that time, he should be virtually back to 100 percent

LEMONT – Lemont’s baseball team worked a little overtime on Tuesday afternoon and still didn’t reach an outcome. The Indians and Reavis battled to an 8-8 tie through 11 innings before the game was suspended due to darkness. The contest will resume sometime next week. Lemont actually appeared to be cruising to an easy victory, taking a 7-1 lead into the final inning before Reavis plated six unearned runs. The Indians then scored single runs in both the eighth and 11 innings, the last on a Jake Latz home run, only to see the home team come back both times. Latz started the game on the mound and struck out 10 in six innings of work, allowing no earned runs. “We made a couple of costly errors,” said Lemont coach Brian Storako. “But our kids battled. Even after giving up those runs, they continued to battle. It was a good day to hit; the wind was blowing out about 20 mph.” The squad did not play over the weekend because of its scheduled doubleheader against Chatham Glenwood was canceled due to weather.

Lemont soccer faces big test at own invite By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont girls soccer team passed one test last weekend in the Quad Cities. This weekend, the Indians face an even greater challenge. For the 10th consecutive year, the squad is hosting the Lemont Invitational, which features the likes of Waubonsie Valley, Sandburg and Andrew. “Waubonsie Valley is the best team in the tournament right now,” said Lemont coach Rick Prangen. “They’ve won it every year they have been in it. They are a perennial powerhouse. We are the smallest school in it and that is by design.” The Indians will open the event on Friday against Lincoln-Way East. “They’ve always been a big rival of ours for a very long time,” the coach said. “When we were coming up as a program, they

Now things have evened up a bit. “They will work hard, and it will be a physical game. All the teams (in the tournament), you have to play well to win. That’s what I want right now. The team was coming off a 2-1 mark at the Moline Invite, picking up a 2-1 victory over Pleasant Valley (Iowa) behind goals from Lumsden and Nicole McKevitt and a win in penalty kicks over the host team before falling 1-0 in the final to Highland Park. Against Moline, Savannah Brija scored in regulation and also added the winning penalty kick after Fritz made a pair of saves. Lemont played without leading scorer Alek Mihailovic, who was injured in the April 23 match with TF North. “We had a good tournament,” Prangen said. “We competed, and we played hard.”

On Friday, the Indians beat Eisenhower 3-2 as Charlie Wright and Joe Sambucci combined to throw a three-hitter. A day earlier, Lemont lost its first conference game of the season, dropping a 3-2 decision to Oak Lawn. Cody Caballero allowed just three hits and no earned runs but three errors hurt the cause. “It seems our mistakes come in bunches,” the coach said. “We make a bunch of great plays, and our pitchers throw great. Then if we do have an error, we seem to walk a guy. “Our defense will come around; they just have to have confidence in themselves. We really have a new infield (this year) except for one guy. This is their first year playing consistently at the varsity level.” Lemont is scheduled to play Oak Forest on Monday and Tuesday in what should decide the South Suburban Blue Conference title. “They are always solid; they always have a pretty good team,” Storako said.

It’s definitely an honor to sign an NFL contract.” A 6-foot, 310-pound offensive lineman, Pocic started 10 games last fall for the University of Illinois (he missed two games due to injury), eight at center and two at right tackle. A team captain, he was a honorable-mention All-Big Ten pick by the media.

As a junior, Pocic started all 13 games. He also started all 13 games as a sophomore and played in 10 as a redshirt freshman. At Lemont, he helped lead the Indians to their first-ever appearance in a state championship game in 2007. “He’s a hard worker, good kid, very respectful,” said Lemont football coach Eric Michaelsen, “and he is always wanting to get better. I know that’s his dream, to make it to the NFL.” Pocic follows in a line of recent draftees with ties to Lemont. Coby Fleener, who grew up in Lemont and attended Joliet Catholic High School, was drafted in the second round of the 2012 draft by the Indianapolis Colts, and 2007 Lemont graduate David Molk was picked in the seventh round last year by the San Diego Chargers.
