About OASIS
ecoleman@shawmedia.com Anxiety and trouble coping can grind some students’ learning to a stop. The Opportunities to Achieve Success in School (OASIS) program at Hannah Beardsley Middle School in Crystal Lake puts an emphasis on addressing such issues as they come up. At Hannah Beardsley, one social worker is responsible for the 1,000-plus students, meeting with students with individualized education plans, addressing crises as they come up and referring parents to outside services if the school can’t meet the needs. School psychologists tend to focus on assessing the needs of students, be they social, emotional or caused by a learning disability. District 155 is adding two full-time psychologists next year, so they’ll have the time to devote to other tasks and break away from that traditional role, said Mark Kovack, District 155’s director of student services. “It’s very unpredictable from day-to-day,” said Julie Carnes, a social worker at District 155’s Crystal Lake South High School. “For example, yesterday ... a student came in very concerned about her mother who has depression and her safety and well-being, so we had to do a well-being check. I also had a 18-year-old who had been

Enrollment dips statewide, but local campus sees growth By LAWERENCE SYNETT lsynett@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Enrollment at McHenry County College rose this spring as numbers dipped slightly at most community colleges across the state. The 2.2 percent increase in full-time equivalent students compared with last spring bucks a 2.5 percent overall decline in community college enrollment statewide,
data show. MCC has 3,953 full-time equivalent students this spring compared with 3,867 in 2012. The Crystal Lake-based institution has been a topic of debate recently as officials discuss a proposed $42 million expansion. “We have tried to focus on putting in new programs and coursework that meets the needs of our students,” said Tony Miksa, vice president of academic and student affairs. “Those are the key drivers
that are pushing enrollment.” The full-time equivalent student enrollment count statewide for spring is 205,947, compared with 211,247 a year ago, according to a spring enrollment report recently released by the Illinois Community College Board. The figures reflect the total number of credit hours being taken by students divided by 15, which traditionally is considered

U.S. Senate to take up Internet sales tax bill By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Buy anything on the Internet lately without paying sales tax? In all but a few states, you’re probably a tax cheat. That’s right, even if Internet retailers don’t collect sales tax at the time of the purchase, you’re required by law to pay it in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Here’s the problem for states:
Hardly anyone pays the tax, and there’s not much states can do about it. The Senate is expected to pass a bill Monday making it easier for states to collect sales taxes for online purchases. Some of the nation’s largest retailers are rejoicing. But small-business owners who make their living selling products on the Internet worry they will be swamped by new requirements from faraway states. “It’s a huge burden for a com-

pany like ours,” said Sarah Davis, co-owner of Fashionphile.com, a California-based company that sells high-end pre-owned handbags and purses. “We don’t have an accounting department, we’ve got my father-in-law.” Davis started the company in 1999 and now runs it with her brother-in-law. They have 26 workers and three stores, in Beverly Hills, San Diego and San Francisco. Last year, Fashionphile.com did $10 million in sales,
the vast majority of it online, Davis said. Fashionphile.com sells bags directly from its website and on eBay. The company collects sales taxes from customers who live in California, but not from people who live in other states, Davis said. Under the current law, states can only require stores to collect sales taxes if the store has a physical presence in the state.
