sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Marek Makowski remembers his younger days, when he tried to replicate novels such as “Harry Potter” and “Eragon.” Novels that would seamlessly captivate his attention for hours.

Makowski, now a 17-yearold senior at Huntley High School, would emulate the storylines of his favorite childhood novels, changing character names and rehashing plot lines to gain experience with writing.

A son of Polish immigrants, Makowski often would write his “knock-off” stories while also trying to master the English language in a household where Polish is still the “language in demand,” he said.

“I wouldn’t break up paragraphs, so it would just be this confusing dialogue,” Makowski said of his early storytelling. “But I knew I loved writing and reading.”

Makowski’s love for writing has evolved as he has finetuned his storytelling skills since joining Huntley High’s student newspaper, The Voice, his sophomore year.

Last month, the Illinois Journalism Education Association rewarded Makowski for his writing by naming him the Illinois Journalist of the Year.

Makowski put three years’ worth of feature stories, columns, news stories, page designs and photos into a 38-page portfolio. The IJEA judges gave him the statewide honor based on the quality and depth of his work.

Makowski’s award is one of many on a growing list of accolades for the school’s journalism program. The staff at The Voice recently won second place in the Illinois High School Association’s journalism finals for the second consecutive year.

Last year, the National Scholastic Press Association awarded The Voice Online with a 2012 Online Pacemaker mere months after the newspaper launched its website.

Makowski plans on building on his early journalism success this fall at the University of Missouri, where he will major in journalism.

Di Benedetto: Why are the stories more important to you than the awards?

Makowski: Accolades are great and all. The sports editor who was before me at The Voice goes to Missouri right now, and he always tells me how journalism is just an ego-infested land over there because everybody flaunts their awards. Winning stuff is nice, and I get to put a shiny thing on my wall, but I think it’s more important to tell people stories. For this [upcoming] issue, I wrote a story about a kid who used to get bullied in middle school, and he started joining kickboxing.

He got more confident, and he got more control of his life.

I think writing that is much more important to me and the community rather than getting an award for it.

Di Benedetto: Why do you want to pursue journalism as a career?

Makowski: I love telling people’s stories. I love going out reporting and talking to people. It helps readers learn things about life, and it helps me learn things about life.

Writing is a lot of fun for me.

Di Benedetto: How do you think you’ve improved as a journalist since sophomore year? What do you need to still improve upon as you head to college?

Makowski: I have a really long way to go, but my inter-

view skills by far have improved. I know what to look for now ... I know how to look for intriguing stories now. I’m better at writing ... I’m working with pace and tone in my writing. I just need to get a lot more experience. My writing isn’t as pristine as I want it to be. I’m still in high school.

Di Benedetto: You read a lot about how the journalism industry is in flux and how younger people are being turned away from the industry given the changes. Why do you want to pursue it in the face of uncertainty?

Makowski: People are saying newspapers are dying.

You are always going to have media that evolves and changes, and people are going to shift to the web, and they are going to shift to whatever is invented next. But stories are always going to capture people. You tell a story and you get people involved. ... Instead of just listing off facts, the story is what hooks people in and that’s what people are going to be looking for no matter how terrible the job market is or how bad the pay is.

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com LAKE IN THE HILLS – Carly Haniszewski had to fight back tears Thursday as she pushed her daughter, Teagen, in a wheelchair through a swarm of middle schoolers along the track at Marlowe Middle School.

The show of support was gratifying for the Haniszewskis after Teagan, 7, spent the past five years successfully battling pediatric brain cancer that went into remission last year.

The arduous fight has forced Teagen to learn speech again, and it likely means she will be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She goes

through speech, physical and occupational therapy daily, but on Thursday, Teagen was happy to be the center of attention.

“Marlowe Middle School has been amazing with everything that we are doing,” Carly Haniszewski said. “The support from the families and the kids, I love seeing. There is a lot of love in this room.”

Carly and Teagen Haniszewski helped more than 400 Marlowe students and staff members kick off their 24hour walkathon event intended to raise money for the Haniszewskis’ Opening Doors With Teagen foundation.

Founded last year, Opening Doors With Teagen strives to provide financial support

for families affected by pediatric cancer. The foundation offers assistance to help families with rehab, therapy and other post-hospital costs that insurance typically doesn’t cover.

Carly and Teagen Haniszewski led the ceremonious first lap of the event, which has students and teachers walking in teams around the Marlowe track and gym from Thursday to Friday afternoon.

The physically demanding event is just one way Marlowe students have shown their dedication to helping Teagen, a first-grader at District 158’s Chesak Elementary, said project organizer Rita Castans, who also teaches

physical education at Marlowe.

The walkathon event marked a yearlong effort by Marlowe teachers and students to raise money for the startup foundation.

“Opening Doors with Teagen is a fantastic foundation that helps local kids, local families who have survived pediatric cancer,” Castans said. “We wanted our kids to start learning how to help other kids.”

The Marlowe community service project has netted Opening Doors With Teagen more than $15,000. Aside from walking for 24 consecutive hours, students had to ask parents and community members for donations.

Students at the District 158 middle school also challenged each other in a “penny war” earlier in the year that helped generate an initial $3,100 for the foundation.

Before taking the first lap Thursday, Carly Haniszewski said the support from Marlowe and others in the community has been invaluable for a family that often prepared many times to say goodbye to Teagen during her five-year battle with brain cancer.

“It’s emotional for me because I am excited that she is still here to do [a lap], but I’m proud of her,” Carly Haniszewski said. “She’s come a long way, and she has fought very hard to be where she is at.”

Technology aids local crime solving efforts

By LAWERENCE SYNETT lsynett@shawmedia.com Local, state and federal authorities have praised the role of technology in helping apprehend the suspect allegedly behind the Boston Marathon bombings that killed three people and injured scores more.

Investigators, dealing with a flood of digital evidence from citizens, used technology, among other things, to help identify the brothers accused in the bombings.

Although law enforcement agencies in McHenry County rarely, if ever, find themselves hunting possible terrorists, the use of technology also plays an important role in solving everyday crime and identifying suspects.

“People [in Boston] got involved and were willing to step forward,” Crystal Lake police Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said. “The combination of existing technology and the willingness of citizens only enhances our ability to protect and serve.”

Local authorities traditionally lack funding for advanced technologies, but larger entities such as the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office have been able to add these devices and services as the budget allows.

Technology often used by the sheriff’s office includes automatic license plate readers capable of reading thousands of plates in a short period of time, Undersheriff Andrew Zinke said. The readers allow officers to search for stolen vehicles, suspects who are wanted, or those suspected of dealing drugs,

Recently, they have been used to track down motorists involved in hit-and-run accidents when the only information available is a partial plate number and description of the vehicle involved, as well as shootings involving vehicles where no suspect has been identified.

Another important tool for the sheriff’s office is its intelligence-led policing effort, which allows officials to target high-crime areas in the county by compiling crime data and turning it into a map.

That mapping program came at no cost to the department, and instances where it has been used include areas

where a string of residential burglaries has occurred, among other crime trends.

The Crystal Lake and Huntley police departments are in the process of integrating a similar mapping technique to use when deploying officers throughout the communities.

“We can use smart technology and attempt to predict where that officer should be rather than where he is required to be after a crime happens,” Dziewior said. “It helps predict where crime has and is most likely to occur.”

Thermal imaging, like that used to locate the Boston bombing suspect, also is available to many depart-

ments throughout the county.

Night vision also can be used.

Upgrades, like those now available in the majority of squad cars, have increased efficiency rates for local departments.

That includes in-car cameras that record video and audio of each traffic stop both outside and inside the vehicle, as well as in-car laptops linked to national, state and local databases.

“It’s a limitless law enforcement system right now,” Dziewior said. “Information is instantly available to officers throughout the country.”

Other amenities inside the squad cars can include digital printers, radar units, portable Breathalyzers, and devic-

“I was thoroughly impressed with him all the time,” Olson said. “I was impressed with how they practiced and how he prepared himself and his team for the games. What stood out when we interviewed people was how thorough and prepared he was.”

“I have been doing this for 37 years, and when I started, all you had in the police car was a cabin and toggle switch to turn the sirens and lights on,” Huntley Police Chief John Perkins said. “If you look now, there’s hardly enough room because of all the equipment.”

Once a crime has occurred, the technology used in crime labs with the use of DNA and other evidence has expedited the process of identifying a suspect, Perkins added.

The addition of technology also has helped departments run more smoothly.

“Embracing technology and adding new training opportunities has helped us to reduce overtime and improve efficiency,” Zinke said. “You have to be smart and utilize these tools whenever possible.”

Social media and citizen tips through anonymous phone calls or text messages have allowed residents the ability to instantly send information to police when crimes or suspicious activity occurs.

“If people don’t alert us to the things we should be focusing on, technology is useless,” Dziewior said. “It only benefits us if the community is involved.”

The technology trend also has produced a new type of criminal, Perkins added.

“As much as [technology] helps, there is a whole new Wild West of crime that is taking place over the Internet,” he said. “One of the most frustrating things is a citizen who is victimized through identity theft and scams.”

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The District 158 administration will be putting more tablets in students’ hands after recently revealing plans to expand its digital curriculum program to early elementary and middle school classrooms.

The Huntley school district’s emerging “One-toOne” digital curriculum replaces traditional textbooks and allows students to access online programs and lessons through their own tablet, provided by the district.

Teachers used the tablets for the first time during this school year to teach the many third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at Martin Elementary literacy lessons. The success of the program encouraged administrators to follow through with their plan to expand the program to three other schools next year, Chief Academic Officer Mike Moan said.

“We are finding that younger kids are the true digital natives,” Moan said.

“They can use the technology more easily, and it’s up to us to make sure we are meeting

their needs academically.”

Moan revealed the tablet expansion plan to district board members during a committee meeting Thursday. The expansion would put nearly 2,300 tablets in the hands of students at Conley and Legee elementary schools.

The second phase of the district’s digital curriculum expansion will cost $1.156 million and be paid through money that would otherwise be spent on traditional textbooks and outfitting computer labs.

The administration also decided to include the incoming class of sixth-graders at Marlowe Middle School in its expansion plans. The move allows this year’s fifth-graders at Martin to continue using tablets, Moan said.

Teachers at Conley, Legee, Martin and Marlowe also will use the tablets to teach additional subjects, such as math, science and social studies, Moan said.

The expansion also means the youngest students at District 158 will be using tablets to learn. The tablets will be integrated at a slower pace with Legee’s kindergartners, first- and second-graders – the

youngest grade levels to use the “One-to-One” program.

“The community has embraced it,” Moan said. “The students love it. The teachers love it. We are very excited about the year we had at Martin, and we are excited to be expanding it.”

Administrators will look to expand the program to more elementary and middle schools in 2014-15, with an eye toward using it at Huntley High School in 2016, Moan said.

Board members also learned this week that construction crews soon will start excavating and installing drainage along the high school football field.

Crews will start the work in the coming weeks, before installing synthetic football turf and extra stadium seating. The stadium renovation is a part of the district’s ongoing effort to expand the high school to accommodate 3,000 students by 2019.

The high school’s Athletic Boosters Club handed the board an unexpected $40,000 check in donations this week to pay for a new football stadium scoreboard, Board President Don Drzal said.

Friday’s win was the third in 12 starts for Take Charge Indy. According to the Daily Racing Form, his winning share was $202,338, bringing his career winnings to just under $1 million. Sandford said this will be Take Charge Indy’s final year of racing.

He sold the horse’s breeding rights to Kentucky-based WinStar Farms last fall under the stipulation that he could still race Take Charge Indy this season.

Byrne told reporters that Take Charge Indy would likely make his next start at

the Stephen Foster Handicap next month, but wouldn’t make a final decision until speaking with Sandford and with representatives from WinStar Farms.

But Friday was all about celebrating.

“It was so exciting – he led from the beginning and he ran away with it,” Maribeth Sandford said. “It was the Take Charge Indy we knew and then he had the injury.

But he’s been feeling so good in the barn. He has been working so well and his times have been very good.

“We were cautious about saying too much before, but we knew personally that he was running well.”

Take Charge Indy trainer Patrick Byrne admitted last week that running at Friday’s Alysheba Stakes wouldn’t be easy. But deep down, he felt the 4-year-cold had it in him to win at Churchill Downs.

Byrne liked the way Take Charge Indy had been running strong this spring and knew Churchill was a place the horse owned by Marengo residents Chuck and Maribeth Sandford felt extremely comfortable.

Take Charge Indy looked right at home in the $339,000 Grade 2 race, bursting ahead of the field with Rosie Na-

pavrik aboard in the 1 1/16mile race that was part of the undercard for the Kentucky Oaks.

Take Charge Indy finished in 1:47.47, winning by six lengths.

The win came a year after Take Charge Indy placed 19th in the Kentucky Derby, when he chipped a bone in his left front ankle. After missing five months, Take Charge Indy placed third in the Donn and second in the Skip Away Stakes in Florida, building up to Friday’s victory.
