Teacher surprised by car upgrades St. Charles auto center employees install new brakes, tires By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Steve Jaskowski, manager of the Suburban Tire Auto Care Center in St. Charles, admires the job that music and choral teacher Mike McHugh does for his children and the other students at Grande Reserve Elementary School in Yorkville. As a way to thank him, Jaskowski and his employees on Wednesday installed new brakes, wheels and tires on McHugh’s 2004 Kia Optima, to McHugh’s surprise. “This is incredible,” McHugh said, before Jaskowski gave him back the keys to his car. “I inherited this car from my great aunt. This will make me take care of my tires.” McHugh’s wife, Steph, was in on the surprise, which is how Jaskowski and his employees were able to work on his car Wednesday. “She told me she needed my car today, and not to ask questions,” McHugh said. The surprise almost didn’t happen. McHugh was feeling under the weather Wednesday and called in sick. “But then the school principal called me saying it was an emergency and that I had to be at school at 11:30 a.m.,” McHugh said.

Steve Jaskowski (right), manager of the Suburban Tire Auto Care Center in St. Charles, gives Grande Reserve Elementary School music and choral teacher Mike McHugh the keys back to his 2004 Kia Optima. Jaskowski’s three children attend the Yorkville school and as a way to show his appreciation, he surprised McHugh on Wednesday by putting new brakes, tires and wheels on his car. Jaskowski said he would have surprised McHugh at his home if McHugh wasn’t able to make it to school. Jaskowski’s three children, Dillon, 6, Rachael, 8, and Ryan, 11, attend Grande Reserve Elementary School. “He is very inspiring,” Jaskowski said. “He inspired me to do something a little over

the top.” Ryan Jaskowski agreed. “He always does his best and tries to make our musicals the best they can be,” he said. Ryan recently starred in one of the school’s musicals, “Newsies.” Rachael said that McHugh “encourages us a lot.”

Awards will be given for best nature image, best people image and most creative image in each age group. Photos will be displayed on the RiverPark website, at the GO Day event and at a downtown location during Swedish Days in June. Poems and photo submissions must be dropped off at City Hall, 22 S. First St., Geneva, by Friday, May 31. Rules and details for the contests are available on the RiverPark website, www.riverparkofgeneva.com. This is the sixth annual Na-

An inclusive workplace Employers, officials say people with developmental disabilities shine on job By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com

W

hen Terry Josefowicz hires employees to work in the front end of Jewel-Osco in St. Charles, she looks for someone with a good personality and communication skills who can offer a friendly smile to customers as they check out. She found all those qualities in Geneva resident David Kelly, 27, who has worked in the front end of the store for six years. But what sets David Kelly apart from most of the store’s employees is that he has Down syndrome. Josefowicz, the store’s front-end manager, said that hasn’t stopped Kelly from working hard and doing his job well for the past six years. “They work hard, and they have a great work ethic,” Josefowicz said of the handful of store employees who have a developmental disability. “They’re all just so honest and open.” Jobs such as the one at Jewel-Osco aren’t always easy to come by for people with developmental disabilities, said Kelly’s mother, Joelle Kelly. And Mayer Smith, business services representative for the Association for Individual Development, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to people with developmental disabilities, agreed. Smith finds job opportunities for such employees, many of whom are from the Tri-Cities, and he said job opportunities have thinned out in recent years. Smith said that’s due, in part, to a social stigma that’s sometimes attached to people with disabilities, as some employers falsely view them as poor workers. Another hurdle for disabled people in the job market is the economy, he said. “There’s all kinds of issues going on in an economy that’s still jittery,” he said. “When [employers] started laying

Kelly has worked for the company for six years. people off, this type of work was maybe the last thing left – the last chance to keep their employees busy without laying them off. So there’s been issues there.” He said he usually can help potential employers move past the social stigma by bringing them into one of AID’s workshops and showing them the quality of work that’s being done by employees with developmental disabilities. Miguel Alba, communications and public affairs manager for Jewel-Osco, said he encourages employers to overlook that stigma. “I once heard a store director explain that we can train anyone to do the jobs we need, but the personality and desire to do the job can’t be taught,” he said. “These individuals are often the best employees because they’re motivated and happy to be there. Customers respond positively to them.”

Josefowicz said in her 27 years as a front-end manager, she has had few bad experiences working with people who have developmental disabilities. And David Kelly said he enjoys helping bag groceries or corral carts, which is why he has stayed with the company for six years. Joelle Kelly said her son’s job responsibilities have helped him become more independent – he makes sure his work uniform is clean and ready to wear the next day, sets him alarm and manages his work schedule. “It’s a prize to have a job like this in David’s life,” she said. “It’s like winning the lottery.” The benefits are far-reaching for employers, too. Smith said it’s no more expensive for employers to hire people through AID than through a for-profit company. A job that typically would take one person to do is

sometimes split between two or three employees hired through AID, putting more people to work with no extra expense to the employer. And employees still are getting a fair paycheck, Smith said, but that’s not the only thing they gain.

“There’s huge benefits to our workers because they want to feel a part of the community,” he said. “They want to be treated just like you and I. The best day is the day they get their paycheck because they earned it, and they’re very proud of it.”

County Board set to vote on government hiring policies By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A proposal to revise Kane County’s hiring policies and give new control to the county’s various department heads will go to the full County Board for a vote. The Kane County Board’s Executive Committee endorsed a series of changes Wednesday to the county’s ordinance governing Kane’s 5-year-old hiring freeze policy. Under the latest revision, county department heads, such as those overseeing the county’s transportation division or the Kane County Development Department, would be granted powers to replace departed employees, at times without consulting the County Board. Previously, the county’s hiring freeze rules – in place since 2008 – had required all county departments to submit their hires for review.

However, under the new proposed rules, county department heads would be empowered to hire, without formal board approval, to fill vacancies in pre-existing positions at the same salary or less. Department heads also will be empowered to make “emergency” hires at their discretion. Information on new hires still would need to be submitted to the County Board within 45 days. County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said he believed concerns over the revisions were addressed either in discussions with county department heads or in changes to the ordinance’s language. He particularly noted the general agreement over the need to allow emergency hires. “There will always be emergencies no matter the organization,” Lauzen said. The committee endorsed

the measure unanimously, sending it to the full County Board for consideration Tuesday. The County Board began reviewing its hiring policies earlier this year after some County Board members questioned whether the rules had been properly interpreted. Those questions arose after the temporary hiring of a billing manager in the county’s Animal Control Department. In recent days, Lauzen also has sought to hire a temporary community outreach coordinator, a position he believes is necessary to help the county improve relations with its residents and outside entities. He said he does not believe the position needs to be submitted to the County Board for review, as it is, at this point, a temporary position, with a contract term of six months. That potential hire has not yet been discussed by the County Board publicly.

repeat offenders. • Solicitation/prostitution – Helps educate certain prostitution or solicitation-related offenders to understand the risks and consequences of committing these acts and to remove occurrences of these offenses from the neighborhoods in which they occur. • Felony drug – Gives offenders the opportunity to avoid prison and a permanent conviction on their record; teaches them to live drug-free and more productive lives; and reduces the likelihood that they will become perpetual offenders. The felony drug diversion program began about a year ago and has had 100 applicants, according to the state’s attorney’s office. Of those, the office reported, 79 applicants are participating, approved to start or awaiting approval; five were rejected; six had negative terminations; and 10 chose not to participate or were unable to participate after their acceptance. The program is expected to graduate its first participant in June.

Ceremony set to honor former STC Park District commissioner KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The public is invited to a dedication ceremony to honor former St. Charles Park District commissioner John “Jack” Kerr at 5:45 p.m. May 28 at Pottawatomie Park. A ribbon cutting is set for 6 p.m. Kerr, who died July 2, 2012, was involved in the Fox Valley community since moving in 1985 from Marietta, Ga., with his wife of 52 years, Mary Neder Kerr. For Kerr’s 25 years of service and dedication to the St. Charles Park District, the

park board will commemorate the walkway near the Pottawatomie Park pavilion and Fox River. It will be named the John “Jack” Kerr Walkway. Kerr served in many capacities on the park board, including president, John “Jack” vice president, Kerr treasurer and secretary. He was passionate about aquatics, especially the renovation of the 70-year-old Swanson Pool in Pottawatomie Park, and he advocated for the acquisition of open

space, improvement to existing facilities and development of new properties. More than 1,000 acres of land used for parks and open space were acquired during his tenure. He also was instrumental in the park district winning the National Gold Medal Award in 1998. Other civic involvement included serving on the Norris Cultural Arts Center Board, the Kane County Citizens Advisory Committee, the River Corridor Foundation, the Kane County Judicial Center Master Plan Committee and the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association.

SUGAR GROVE – An update on a bullying task force’s action plan Wednesday elicited mixed emotions among some Kaneland School District 302 board members. Sarah Mumm and Erika Schlicter gave the board an update on the progress of the action plan, which included the findings of an audit that helped the task force identify the district’s biggest areas of need. Schlicter said the task force has looked at a variety of anti-bullying programs in the past year, including nationally-recognized programs such as Rachel’s Challenge, Chick Chat and the 40 Assets program. Mumm and Schlicter submitted a timeline that goes through April, which includes goals such as teaching computer ethics and boosting district employee morale and professionalism. Mumm explained that the plan leaves room to create school-specific goals based on varying needs at different grade levels. “We found that there were many programs that served communities, and we wanted to make sure we identified as many as we could – what actually fits with what we need,” Schlicter said. Some school board members expressed disappointment that no students had input on the task force, and that too few parents were involved. School board member Teresa Witt suggested getting student leadership organizations such as the

gay-straight alliance and peer leaders involved, as well as some of the students who have been victimized by bullies. “I’m excited to see how everything works,” she said. “What’s missing is it seems there should be a student component on the task force to help with student buy-in.” Board member Tony Valente said he wanted more concrete data to review before implementing the action plan. “I’m disappointed in this action plan,” he said. “You’ve got one parent and no students. This does not serve our community. This does not serve our students.” Newly elected school board member Pedro Rivas, who was seated on the board Wednesday along with Veronica Bruhl, also said he wanted to see more data and student representation on the task force. He suggested looking at areas where no data may be available but still is relevant. Two members of the task force attended the meeting and shared some of the board members’ concerns about the action plan. Leigh Ann Reusche of Elburn, the only nonschool employee parent on the task force, said she was disappointed that a citizen advisory committee didn’t have a chance to review the task force’s work. “I was glad to be a part of that and I was a pretty strong voice, but there are many others out there,” she said. “I would like to have seen more of that. I personally feel it’s missing.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office wants eligible first-time offenders to know that, through diversion programs, they have the option to keep criminal convictions off their records, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said. But, he told reporters at his monthly media meeting this week, more and more people with pending cases are asking about such programs late in the process. McMahon acknowledged that some of the late requests are because of out-of-county attorneys being unaware of the programs, but he also noted that a big part of the diversion programs is accepting responsibility early. The state’s attorney’s office is working to better publicize the programs, both on its website and at the time of individuals’ arraignments. “I think these are great programs,” McMahon said. “I want people to know about these options.”

The number of diversionary programs has grown to five since the state’s attorney’s office began offering them in October 1995. According to the office’s website, about 80 percent of the approximately 5,000 participants have completed the programs. The diversion programs are as follows: • Felony/misdemeanor – Provides a plan for first-time, nonviolent offenders to keep a conviction from being permanently entered on their record while accepting responsibility for their criminal activity. • Misdemeanor drug and alcohol – Holds certain firsttime misdemeanor drug and alcohol offenders accountable, provides information and counseling about the risks of such substances and provides tools to prevent them from becoming repeat offenders or addicts. • Domestic violence – Designed to hold first-time domestic violence offenders accountable and provides tools, such as counseling, to prevent them from becoming

OAK CREST DeKalb Area Retirement Center www.oakcrestdekalb.org

“Location, location, location…” After spending thirty years as a realtor, you might say I know a thing or two about what makes a house a home. In the real estate business you always hear the key to real estate is location. Believe me; it’s even truer when you are looking at retirement options. I knew I wanted to live in a community that had a rural feel but still afforded me the advantages of a larger city. I knew from Corinne Kirschbaum experience that proximity to a state university would afford me access to any number of cultural and educational opportunities. I knew without a doubt that life care and the security of knowing that my current expectations and future needs could be met all in one place would be paramount. I also knew that I wanted not only a place to live, I wanted a home. Like any good consumer, I looked at other options, but Oak Crest met all my expectations and more. Now I enjoy all the programs and events my community has to offer, access to care and services when I need them and all in a home I love. For me location translated into Oak Crest. I guess you could say, Oak Crest has it all, and I am glad I decided to make it my home. Come discover all that Oak Crest has to offer. Corinne Kirschbaum, Resident since 2012

OPINIONS ANOTHER VIEW

Sex crime cases must be untied from military chain Air Force officer responsible for, of all things, sexual-assault prevention, was arrested and charged with sexual battery. It also recently came to light that in the past year, two Air Force generals, against the recommendations of their legal advisers, overruled military jury findings and granted clemency to convicted sex offenders. Twenty-two years have passed since the Tailhook scandal focused attention on the sexual abuse of military women. The military has had time enough to get a handle on sexual abuse. A longer-term solution lies in affecting cultural change in the military. The Pentagon’s decision in January to drop its ban on women serving in direct combat should allow greater equality and thus may reduce sexual abuse. Until then, an immediate remedy is required.

BLOOMBERG NEWS Any doubts that the U.S. military has been unable to address its own problems with sexual assault should be dispelled by a just-released Department of Defense survey. The number of such assaults reported by members of the military increased 6 percent in 2012, to 3,374. Still more disconcerting was an anonymous survey suggesting that as many as 26,000 service members were actually attacked last year. Many victims have too little faith in the military’s justice system to come forward. Recent scandals in the Air Force have laid bare the pervasiveness of sexual abuse. An investigation of the Air Force’s Lackland training headquarters in Texas found evidence that 48 recruits had been sexually assaulted by 23 instructors. This week, the

As graduation looms, a letter of resignation I am writing to announce my resignation from Geneva High School, effective two weeks from this date. I would like to thank the company for the last four years. I have, in one way or another, learned so much from my time with you. I am sure that many of the skills I learned – such as graphing a hyperbola, annotating 8th century Anglo-Saxon epic poetry, illustrating diagrams of plant cell mitosis and how to play both doubles and singles pickleball – will be very useful to me later in life. I appreciate

the company’s lack of emphasis on things like how to fix a flat tire, how to do laundry in college dorms, and how to pay taxes or calculate loan payments. I think other places, such as “Real Life,” put too much emphasis on things like that. I am also very appreciative of the supportive and compassionate environment my co-workers provided. Though I found most of my co-workers did little work and spent most of their time gossiping, I did manage to find a few people I wouldn’t

Fluorescent lighting, desks that collapsed and non-locking restroom stalls really made the time fly by. I think the best part of working at this company was my experience with the higher management. regularly provided me with extra help and support. These people constantly reassured me about my progress, encouraged me, pushed me and did all this while letting us have fun. The few members of higher management who really made me feel great about myself, my skills and my future will be some of the most difficult things to forget about my work at GHS. In short, I am sorry to leave the company, but I have already secured another place of employment and am very

excited about my prospects. I would love to stay at GHS, but I think that if I spend one more minute in there, I will pull out every single hair on my head and scream for as long as I possibly can. Best regards, Courtney Phelan

Seven other locations to shut down as franchisee files for bankruptcy protection By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Tri-Cities’ Applebee’s restaurant is among several of the casual dining chain’s locations scheduled to close this summer in the Chicago area after the franchisee that operates the local restaurants filed for bankruptcy protection. A spokesman for Applebee’s confirmed that the Applebee’s restaurant at 1690 S. Randall Road, Geneva, is slated to close sometime between June 22 and July 6.

He said information was distributed to the restaurant’s employees last month by the franchise holder, Crestview, Ky.-based AppleIllinois. mid-June. Smith said seven other restaurants – in Schaumburg, Homewood, Mokena, Palatine, Romeoville, Streamwood and Tinley Park – are scheduled to close as part of AppleIllinois’ bankruptcy reorganization. Smith said the decision to

close the various restaurants is the result of “multiple factors” that are “unique to the franchisee,” AppleIllinois. He said the bankruptcy does not indicate problems at Applebee’s corporate office or with its brand. Smith said Applebee’s intends to work with its remaining franchisees in the Chicago market to “minimize the number of restaurants closed” and to minimize job losses. “From our point of view, metro Chicago remains a very viable market for Applebee’s,” Smith said.

Herman’s Hermits, Ides Of March to perform in Aurora By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – Herman’s Hermits sometimes gets overlooked as one of the original British Invasion bands. But the band’s hits – such as “I’m Into Something Good” and “Mrs. Brown, “You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter” – are still heard on the radio today. The band will perform those hits and more May 18 at the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora. Also on the bill is Berwyn’s own Ides Of March. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets range from $39.50 to $49.50, available at www. paramountaurora.com, or by calling Paramount’s box office at 630-896-6666. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Herman’s Hermits frontman Peter Noone about the band’s history.

Eric Schelkopf: You are playing with Ides Of March at the Paramount Theatre. Did you guys ever perform with Ides Of March back in the day? Peter Noone: I think we did. It’s hard to remember, but I think we did. I’ve run into them since the ’60s. Even though we were musicians, we weren’t so cool that we didn’t watch every act that was ever on the bill with us. We were fans of music. Whenever you look at a picture of a concert like The Animals or The Who or Tommy James and the Shondells, you can always see members of Herman’s Hermits in the wings watching the show,

or we were in the audience watching the show near the soundman.

younger than the competition. So, when we made a record for 13-year-old girls, it was really more about them. We didn’t know much about 20-year-old girls. All the songs were romantic, like boy meets girl, boy falls in love and lives happily ever after, or boy loses girl and gets all miserable.

Peter Noone

ES: I understand you met many musicians back then. PN: I think it was because I never was very cool. I didn’t ever want to be cool or fashionable. So, I would go up to John Lennon and talk to him, and ask him, “Where are you going after the show?” I think it was because I was so immature. I didn’t know that was not the right thing to do. Consequently, when I met The Everly Brothers, I told them I was a fan and that I had all of their records. I was like a fan, not a fellow musician.

ES: How has the music business changed over the years? PN: It seems odd that we all get thrown in competition with each other, like the American idea that music is some sort of talent contest, which is totally bogus. You think that I was in competition with The Beatles? We were all unique and different. We didn’t compete with each other. We all supported each other. Now, everybody is in some sort of weird competition. None of us were in it for the money. We were just lucky we made some. The difference now is that everything is about money.

ES: How did those experiences help you out as a musician? PN: It helped me out to be more respectful of my following. All the big stars that I liked were kind and gentlemanly to me. It taught me that there is some sort of magical connection between the person who likes your music and you. You have to keep hold of that connection.

ES: You don’t hear Herman’s Hermits mentioned that much in references to the British Invasion, but you were part of it. Do you feel like the band was overlooked? PN: We may be overlooked because Herman’s Hermits was like the Sex Pistols. We didn’t have a plan. We were just fans of music, and we just happened to be in a band that made records that sold, and we said, “Let’s make another record that sells a lot.”

ES: So that’s still your view, you are doing it for the love of music, not for the money? PN: If you see Herman’s

Hermits, you can tell that we enjoy the stuff that we do. Before we go on stage, I always say to the guys, “Remember, this is going to be the best show we’ve ever done in our lives.” We want it to be the best show. I’m just lucky that I managed to make a living out of doing what I like.

DINING

Batavia’s Open Range an appealing dining option BATAVIA – If you’re planning to go to Open Range American Grill in downtown Batavia, you had better make sure you have a big appetite. The generous portions served at the restaurant, along with its comfortable atmosphere, make for a dining experience that I want to repeat again and again. Since it was a summer-like day, my co-worker and I decided to sit in the restaurant’s screened porch, giving us a chance to relax and enjoy a scenic view of Depot Pond and the Fox River Trail. We decided to start with the Borracho shrimp appetizer, which proved to be a good choice. My co-worker really enjoyed the flavors in the sauce that was drizzled on the shrimp. While she thought the shrimp were a bit chewy, she noted the shrimp were big in size. I liked the freshness of the shrimp, and that the sauce was flavorful, but not too spicy.

Next up, I decided to try the Tumbleweed Burger. My eyes widened as the burger arrived, which was overflowing with a fried egg, applewood bacon, queso cheese sauce and onion tanglers. I could hardly get my mouth around this massive burger, but once I bit in, the tasty combination of the toppings brought a wide smile to my face. It’s a burger that will fill any appetite, and you will most likely be taking home leftovers, as I did. My co-worker opted for the San Diego fish tacos. She liked the delicious, crispy cod bites, pickled cabbage and flavorful chipotle sauce. Her appetite was also satisfied, especially after rounding out the meal with a good-sized portion of smoked baked beans. The menu at Open Range American Grill is expansive – barbecued ribs, crab cakes, enchiladas and pizza are among the other items on the menu, and prices are reasonable, so the restau-

years before Bobby Darrin’s death, he painfully found out that the lady he thought was his mother his whole life was actually his grandmother, and his sister Nina was actually his mother! He also talked about passing on an offer to get involved with a project another buddy was working on. He wasn’t big on investing in musicals, and it really didn’t seem like it was going to go anywhere. Even his buddy wasn’t too sure how it was going to go, being a show about the rise of his band’s career. The show … “Jersey Boys!” Oops. It’s always a great time with Frankie and the stories are priceless. His live show featured “Venus,” “Beauty School Dropout” and other songs with stories that just tug at your heart and bring back wonderful memories. Of course, the most touching moment of the evening was his

remembrance of his on-screen love, Mouseketeer beauty Annette Funicello. His finale was a musical tribute that ended with that iconic Mickey Mouse Club Show theme song. Not a dry eye in the house. He still has that teen-idol look. It’s hard to believe he is 72 years old – he even tugs on his full head of hair to prove it’s his. After his show I went back on stage to bring him back out for a question and answer session. As I was about to bring him back, Chicago radio legend Dick Biondi joined Frankie and came back out to center stage. “Ladies and gentlemen, there is nobody who continues to do more for rock ‘n’ roll music in Chicago than Ron Onesti,” Biondi said. Then Frankie took the microphone and also said some very kind words and informed the audience that it was my birthday. Out came a cake that had a photo of me and Frankie right on top. Frankie sang “Happy Birthday” to me and I shared a piece of the huge cake with 900 of my closest friends. The night continued for a few more hours of wood-fired pizza and Chianti.

The next day, I was being honored by The Order Sons of Italy in America, a national Italian-American organization, with its Leonardo DaVinci Award (I was having a good week). It was a recognition of my entrepreneurial endeavors held at a beautiful luncheon. I was surrounded by my family as I was humbled by this honor. Just as the program was to start, in walked Frankie Avalon and Dick Biondi. Frankie actually changed his flight plans so that he could present the award to me. His words were so wonderful and he being there was nothing short of unbelievable.

I can’t tell you how many people come up to me and say, “What a cool job you have!” They see me on stage, hanging with celebs, and are filled with warm-hearted envy. What they don’t see is the other 97 percent of the time when I have to create the shows, produce them, sell the tickets and pay the bills. But there are those experiences that make it all worthwhile. Sixties heartthrob, “Beach Party” movie legend and “Grease” Teen Angel Frankie Avalon recently played at the Arcada Theatre a couple of days before my May 8 birthday. We have worked together countless times before so it’s always an exciting homecoming when Frankie comes to town. This time however, was very special. He came in Friday night (the show was on Saturday) and we had our customary dinner peppered with a couple of bottles from our favorite Italian vineyard. The stories about Fabian, Chubby Checker, The Big Bopper, Bobby Rydell, James Darren and many other ”Philly sound” rock ‘n’ roll superstars from “the neighborhood” were flowing. Did you know that just five

URORA – Some pitchers feel uncomfortable throwing four different types of pitches during games. Aurora Central Catholic junior Andrew Bruss uncorks four different kinds of fastballs, let alone the rest of his repertoire. Bruss, a Batavia resident, has used his crafty ways to go 6-2 so far this spring and help lead the Chargers to one of their best seasons in program history. Bruss said he uncorks a two-seam fastball, a fourseam fastball, a cut fastball and a fastball with heavy sinking action. He also features three types of off-speed pitchers, including another offering that helps set him apart – a tricky knuckle-curveball. “I kind of just started when I was little,” Bruss said. “I think my uncle tried to teach me how to throw a knuckleball, and I was so little I didn’t know how to throw it so I started throwing curveballs, and I’ve had a knuckle-curve ever since then. “Every single year it just gets better and better. That’s what nobody will seem to be able to hit, so I keep sticking with it.” In addition to his six wins, the right-hander has an ERA of about 1.50 and has struck out 60 batters and walked 13 in 46 innings. The Chargers have a bona fide ace in Matt Miller but Bruss is squarely in the mix to earn a postseason start next week when the Chargers (24-4 update record) compete in the IHSA Class 2A Westminster Christian Regional. “He mixes in a lot of different stuff,” first-year ACC coach Sean Bieterman said of Bruss. “When he settles in with his off-speed stuff early in a game, it makes him so effective. Aurora Central Catholic pitcher Andrew Bruss of Batavia practices with his team Tuesday. Bruss has emerged as the No. 2 pitcher this season behind ACC ace Matt Miller.

“I’d much rather win a regional and a sectional than a conference championship. Maybe that’s different than some people but that’s how I feel, and that’s kind of what I think we’ve been gearing our guys to, is trying to make a run in the state tournament.” Sean Bieterman Aurora Central Catholic baseball coach fastball so well that when he gets his secondary stuff over, he’s, in my opinion, one of the top pitchers in the area.” Bruss was promoted to the varsity partway into his freshman year, and earned five of the Chargers’ 14 pitching wins as a sophomore despite missing some time with a broken wrist suffered while catching. These days, Bruss primarily plays left field or is the designated batter while batting eighth in the lineup on days when he’s not pitching. Bruss, who competes with the Schaumburg Seminoles travel program, has plenty of varsity experience, but he and his teammates have never tasted anything like the way this season is unfolding.

The school’s all-time wins record (31) remains within reach if ACC has a deep postseason run. “It’s kind of insane to have so many wins this year,” Bruss said. “It’s a big deal for us.” There have been few disappointments for ACC this spring, but the Chargers fell one game short of sharing the Suburban Christian Conference Gold Title. Chicago Christian (14-2 in conference) wrapped up that honor earlier this week. “We can focus now on the tournament, and that to me is more important,” Bieterman said. “Conference championships are nice and you want to win them, for the kids there’s a lot of pride in that,

I kind of wanted to go there but it was a little bit far of a drive and this is really a better environment, and the block scheduling here allowed me to take any classes I wanted to prep for college.”

So far this season, the left-hander has a 4-5 record in 12 starts. He’s given up 80 hits in 73 innings pitched. At 4.19, his ERA is up a bit from last season, but he attributes that primarily to a couple of rough early-season outings. “The last couple of games I’ve been a little sharper and gone deeper into games,” he said. The Jayhawks are 31-18 overall and 12-9 in Big 12 play. They’ve won six in a row after being swept by West Virginia in a threegame league series at Mor-

gantown. “I think we’ve got a great team this year,” Benjamin said. “Aside from [the West Virginia series], we were in the running for first place. It’s one of the best teams I’ve been on.” Benjamin was on some good teams at St. Charles East. As a junior, he was 13-2 with a 1.26 ERA and was named first team all-state by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association. Benjamin said the quality of the hitters up and down the lineup is one of the ways the college game varies from high school baseball. “In high school, you could get away with a lot more,” he said. “There’s a big difference in terms of the level of talent of the hitters. … You have to make a lot less mistakes.” Benjamin said college hitters usually capitalize on mistakes.

“One pitch could decide a game,” he said. “Every pitch counts. Every pitch matters.” Benjamin is majoring in physical therapy. “I’ve picked a major that’s pretty tough,” he said. “Classes have been going well. I think the only downside is the half-mile hike uphill to get to classes.” A career in physical therapy appeals to Benjamin, but so does one as a professional baseball player. He could be drafted by another major league team following his junior season at Kansas. “I’m looking forward to hopefully having that happen again next year,” Benjamin said.

North Stars ‘jelling’ nearing end of season

St. Charles North rolls through another Upstate Eight Conference River game By VINNIE DUBER sports@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Although softball games typically call for seven innings, the St. Charles North softball team is making a habit of playing only five. The North Stars handed Batavia a 13-1 defeat in five innings on Wednesday, two days after dispatching St. Charles East, 10-0, in five. North did plenty of damage against Batavia starting pitcher Alicia Mueller, hammering the sophomore hurler for eight runs in the first inning and another four in the second. The North Stars sent a total of 21 batters to the plate in the game’s first two frames, with Mueller exiting after facing 17 of them. “It feels really good. I think our bats are finally coming alive,” said North junior left fielder Delaney Olinger. “We were struggling a little at the beginning of the season just flowing as a team, jelling and getting it all together. But ever since the East game, I think we’ve been hitting really good.” Seven of the game’s first eight batters reached in the first inning, and they all ended up scoring. North’s leadoff hitter, junior pitcher Sabrina Rabin, walked to start the game, and promptly stole second. She then tried to make it to third before Batavia catcher Brieann Cruz threw the ball into left field, allowing the first run to score, and the floodgates opened from there. The first inning featured a total of eight runs on five hits, three walks, two errors and a sacrifice fly. An inning later, it was a leadoff double off the bat of junior shortstop Mickey Goetz before four straight one-out singles, two of which plated runs, the last chasing Mueller from the game. Batavia’s junior reliever pitcher, Nicole Peercy, walked two runs in with the bases

loaded before getting out of the inning with the scoreboard reading 12-0 in favor of the home team. The North Stars got one more in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single Sabrina Rabin f r o m s o p h omore first b a s e m a n Abby Howlett, her third RBI in as many plate appear-

ances. The Bulldogs broke up the shutout when senior center fielder Katie Ryan singled in a run in the top of the fifth, making it 13-1 shortly before the game was stopped. “It definitely helps when we all hit collectively,” Rabin said. “It’s a lot more relaxing [as a pitcher]. You can ask [junior relief pitcher] Katie [Roggemann], too, how she pitched. I’m sure she was relaxed, too, by the way we hit. Everybody was

just pumped and ready to go.” The win pushes St. Charles North to 16-4, with an 11-2 record in Upstate Eight Conference River play. “We’re clicking at the right time,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “We just need to continue to stay hot, stay the course. Our goal was to play our best softball going into the tournament, and we’re on that path but we’ve still got work to do.” For Batavia, another

rough day sent its record to 5-16 overall and 2-11 in conference play. Perhaps the Bulldogs were happy Wednesday’s contest lasted just five innings, making it easier to put the loss behind them. “That’s what I told the girls after our meeting,” Batavia coach Lupe Castellanos said. “I’m like, ‘You know what? Today wasn’t our day. North had a pretty good day out there. They’ve been hot. And it wasn’t our day.’ ”

Cougars’ Den

A closer look at the Cougars Who’s hot Right fielder Bijan Rademacher batted just less than .500 (11 for 23) during a 5-1 homestand against Bowling Green and Dayton. He entered Wednesday’s series opener at Burlington with four straight multi-hit games.

Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach didn’t fret over an early home run shortage. “They’ll come,” he said, “and I started to realize that.” Vogelbach entered Wednesday with five homers, second on the team.

Since limiting Clinton to one run in five innings in his season debut, righty Lendy Castillo has surrendered 26 runs – 23 earned – in 18 innings over four starts.

GENEVA – Rock Shoulders, Dan Vogelbach, Willson Contreras and Oliver Zapata combined to hit each of the Cougars’ 16 home runs through Tuesday. That hasn’t kept the rest of their teammates from trying to join the club. “They’re young, and no matter what you say, they’re going to try to hit home runs at times, and that’s just a learning curve that they’ve got to go through,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “And it’ll fix itself.” Hitting coach Tom Beyers already has seen players settle into their skill sets, or at least the elements. While the season’s first five weeks have produced plenty of precipitation, many of the sunnier games at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark were contested with the wind blowing in. This week’s Dayton se-

VIEWS Kevin Druley ries, in which the Cougars won two of three games, was an example. The Cougars tallied 16 runs and 30 hits during the series but hit just one home run. The club also coaxed 17 walks against Dragons pitching. “Sometimes you have to stay pretty much on a line,” Beyers said. “Anything in the air is going to be an out unless you hit it down the lines.” Slugging first baseman Dan Vogelbach smacked 17 home runs in 61 games over two levels in 2012. He entered his first full season with substantial expectations from the organization and the fan base. Early-season inconsis-

tency – largely the result of a series of postponements – contributed to a lack of home runs and extra-base hits. The extra down time also allowed Vogelbach to consult Beyers and Johnson, whose primary message to the well-regarded prospect was one of patience. A Florida native, Vogelbach noted how Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton hit 37 home runs last season despite going deep just once in April. “Early on, I was trying to do too much,” said Vogelbach, who homered five times in April. “I talked to MJ and I talked to some guys, and I’ve just got to let the game come to me. The power numbers weren’t there early, and I was panicking a little bit trying to force it instead of just letting it happen.” Johnson says that’s a

product of following Beyers’ tutelage on line drives. Right fielder Bijan Rademacher can attest. While Rademacher hasn’t homered in 57 Midwest League games over the past two seasons, he’s hitting .353 this spring and was 10 for his last 16 entering Wednesday. “I’ve done a good job of squaring balls up,” Rademacher said. “I mean, early on they were right at people, so my stats didn’t really show that. But me and Tommy have seen it and we’re both happy about how I’m hitting. And right now, they’re just falling.” Whether the landing point is the stands or the outfield, that’s the idea.

Burlington left-hander Ryan Crowley, a Berwyn product, was named Midwest League pitcher of the week for the final week of April. Crowley, who was set to start Wednesday’s series opener against the Cougars, had more strikeouts (22) than hits allowed (21) through five starts and 25 innings.

Noteworthy After Tuesday, the Cougars (14-14) were 6.5 games behind Western Division-leading Cedar Rapids and 3.5 back of first-half wild-card leader Quad Cities. ... Lefty Michael Heesch retired 20 consecutive Dayton batters Michael during Sunday’s 71/3 Heesch shutout innings. ... KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland girls soccer team shut out Sycamore for the second straight day, but this time the Knights scored a goal, defeating the Spartans, 1-0, in Wednesday’s regular season finale. Kiandra Powell scored off a Courtney Diddell assist in the first half for the Knights (10-4-3, 7-1-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East). “We were just passing really well and it opened up and she was able to get the [goal],” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “Courtney made a great pass through and Kiandra was there like she has been lately. She’s been on fire.” The teams played a scoreless tie the day before in Sycamore. Wednesday’s match was a rescheduled game from an earlier postponement.

Parillo said he was proud of his team’s conditioning, especially considering the warm weather. “It’s almost like playing baseball or something,” Parillo said of the back-toback matches against the same opponent. “It’s just how it worked out.”

Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert bring ‘Good vs. Evil’ tour to Chicago By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – For one night, celebrity chefs Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert will take the Auditorium Theatre stage in Chicago as part of the “Good vs. Evil” tour. The “Good vs. Evil” show will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Roosevelt University’s Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress Pkwy., Chicago. Anthony Bourdain – the host of Travel Channel’s “No Reservations” and “The Layover” and author of New York Times Bestseller “Kitchen Confidential” – will join Eric Ripert – the Michelin-star-rated chef of the world-renowned restaurant Le Bernardin, and a regular guest on Bravo’s “Top Chef” – for an evening of storytelling and conversation. The culinary duo, who have been friends for 13 years according to Ripert, represent opposite ends of the dining spectrum and, together, will provide insight into the world of food as well as give a behind-the-scenes look into what really goes on in the

kitchen. “People laugh a lot; they laugh for two hours,” Ripert said of the show, which begins with a roasting of the two chefs. “The show isn’t scripted. Anthony has no idea what I am going to tell him and I have no idea what he’s going to try to say about me.” The show also includes a discussion of various food-related topics and an audience Q&A. In its third year, the “Good vs. Evil” tour is stopping in Chicago for the first time. Ripert said he’s looking forward to revisiting a city he’s been to many times. “I have been to Chicago maybe 20 or 25 times, so I know it pretty well,” Ripert said, adding that he enjoys walking around town and exploring its neighborhoods during his free time before the show. “Then at night we have the show and after we can go to parties ... or maybe we’ll go to bed, but I doubt it,” he said, laughing. Bourdain and Ripert became friends after the release of Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential: Adven-

tures in the Culinary Underbelly,” which gave readers an irreverent look at the dark side of the dining scene. Ripert said after reading Bourdain’s book, he called him up for lunch to discuss the differences between Bourdain’s experiences in the kitchen with his own. “When I read [his book], Tony was talking about the kitchen where he worked and they were full of pirates and gangsters. Where I was training it was very different and very disciplined,” Ripert said. “I invited [him] for lunch and we had a good time. After that a friendship started to develop.” The two chefs’ years of friendship, and contrasting experiences and personalities, spurred the idea to do the “Good vs. Evil” tour. “It was Anthony’s idea,” Ripert said. “We are friends ... we joke a lot with each other, so [Anthony] said, ‘Why don’t we go on the road and do a show?’ And here we are.” For tickets to the “Good vs. Evil” show, visit www.auditoriumtheatre. org.

Phone snoop suspects friend of having affair Dear Abby: I have a friend who I believe is having an affair. I have no concrete evidence, only a slew of circumstantial evidence such as odd work hours, blocks of mystery time set aside at night in his cellphone’s day planner, and evading questions about texts from females. I have no idea how to approach him, or if I even should. I wouldn’t know how to begin the conversation with him because I have no solid proof. I always considered him to be a decent individual, but in the back of my mind now I’m thinking, “He’s cheating on his wife!” Any words of wisdom would be welcome. – Nick In New England Dear Nick: What are you doing going through your friend’s cellphone day planner and reading his texts? He doesn’t have to account to you for his time. For all you know the man may be in a 12-step program or a therapy group. If he wanted you to know what he’s doing, he would tell you. Mind your own business. Dear Abby: I have worked at my

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips job almost 10 years. Most of the owners are nice, and the staff is great. I like my job most days. I had a really bad week recently. I felt like I couldn’t do anything right. The week ended with a really angry text from my boss. He was right. I was in the wrong, and I apologized. He sent me another text, still angry, and my whole weekend was ruined by it. I can’t figure out how not to take work home with me. Also, I can’t help but think he was wrong using a text as a means of discussing the issue. How do I confront this issue? – Still Upset In Oregon Dear Still Upset: It would have been much better management if your boss had talked with you face to face about what was wrong with your performance. I suggest that you have a private chat with him about the issue. Dear Abby: After my best friend

of more than 20 years, I’ll call him “Tim,” told me his wife had cheated on him, I confessed that I am in love with him. His response floored me. Tim announced that he has been in love with me all this time and can imagine growing old with only me. A friend told me I’m committing adultery with Tim because he is now in the process of leaving his cheating wife for me. Am I? We haven’t been intimate, nor do we plan to sleep with each other until the divorce is final. Are we wrong to pursue a relationship? – Conflicted In California Dear Conflicted: If Tim has been in love with you all these years, he couldn’t have had much of a marriage. His wife’s infidelity was his “get out of jail” ticket and he took it. I don’t know what your “friend’s” definition of adultery is, but according to Webster’s dictionary, you’re not committing it. • Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.

Hypothyroidism is simple to diagnose and treat Dear Doctor K: My doctor thinks I may have hypothyroidism. How will he make the diagnosis? Dear Reader: Hypothyroidism is the medical term for an underactive thyroid. Some conditions are hard to diagnose, but fortunately hypothyroidism is not one of them. Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck that makes the thyroid hormones, called T3 and T4. These hormones leave the gland and travel in the blood to every cell in your body. Thyroid hormones influence the rate at which every cell, tissue and organ in your body functions. Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. Your body slows down, creating symptoms such as fatigue, depression, weight gain, feeling cold for no good reason, constipation and dry skin. Your thyroid gland is controlled by another gland: the pituitary gland, which is in the brain. It sends a chemical message to your thyroid, telling it how much hormone to make. The chemical message is called thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Your brain is constantly sensing whether there is an adequate level of thyroid hormones

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff circulating in your blood. If not, the pituitary makes more TSH. Higher levels of TSH prompt the thyroid to produce more thyroid hormones. Low TSH levels signal the thyroid to slow down production. To diagnose hypothyroidism, your doctor will perform a physical examination and some blood tests: • Physical exam. Your doctor will assess the size of your thyroid by feeling around your neck. He or she will check for physical signs of hypothyroidism, such as coarse hair or hair loss, dry or yellowish skin, and pale or puffy appearance. Your weight, cholesterol levels and blood pressure will also be checked. • TSH test. This test is the best way to determine if you have thyroid disease. (I’ve put a table showing the normal, low and high values for the TSH and other thyroid blood tests on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) If your TSH level is high, you are hypothyroid. If TSH levels are below normal, you are hyperthyroid: Your

thyroid gland is making too much thyroid hormone. (There are exceptions to this, but they are infrequent.) • T4 and T3 tests. Once secreted by the thyroid, only a small amount of T4 is “free” and available for immediate use. In hypothyroidism, there’s not enough free T4 in the blood. There’s also not enough T3 in the blood. Together, the TSH, free T4 and T3 tests can establish a diagnosis. They can also indicate how severe your problem is. Fortunately, treating hypothyroidism is easy. You take thyroid hormone in pill form, to replace the hormone your thyroid gland is not making enough of. The same thyroid blood tests used to diagnose hypothyroidism also are used to determine if you’re taking the right dose of thyroid medicines. These tests are repeated regularly, since a person’s dose can change over time. Diagnosing hypothyroidism has become much simpler and more precise since I went to medical school.

Tell your friends the truth Dr. Wallace: A group of my friends are planning to join a huge pro-choice rally at a shopping center parking lot. I’ve never discussed my feelings on this debate with my friends, but I’m pro-life. They are asking me to join the rally, but I said I would let them know a little later. I am not going to be in the pro-choice rally, but I don’t know how to tell them I won’t be there. I could lie and tell them that I had to visit my ill grandmother with my parents, or make up some other lie. Please tell me what you think would be the best solution to this “sticky” problem. – Nameless, Boston, Mass. Dear Nameless: Tell your friends that you won’t join the rally because you are pro-life. Don’t get into a debate, and ask them to please honor your opinion. Good friends have much in common, but they also have opinions that are personal and differ with the majority. Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend and I are contemplating starting a loving sexual relationship. It’s highly important that I don’t become pregnant. Can you please tell me how effective it is for the female to be on “the pill?” How about the effectiveness of a condom used by my boyfriend? We are both 16 years old. – Nameless, Gary, Ind. Dear Nameless: Some time ago a certified school nurse in Rio, provided the following information for me to inform a young Ohio lady who had very similar questions: “The pill is not a 100 percent guarantee that the taker will not become pregnant. Recent figures suggest it has a 3 percent to

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace 7 percent failure rate, meaning that if 100 women use the pill correctly, between three and seven who are sexually active will become pregnant. Even more importantly, the pill is absolutely no protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, chlamydia, cytomegalovirus, venereal warts and HIV/AIDS. If you were thinking of using condoms, you should know that they have about a 13 percent to 18 percent failure rate for preventing pregnancy. And condoms are even less effective for preventing the spread of STDs. The best protection against unwed pregnancy and venereal diseases, as well as the best way to protect one’s emotions and good self-concept, is to abstain from having sexual relations until marriage and remain mutually faithful for life. In our “anything goes” society, this has not been a popular concept, but any young person would do well to make a considered decision based on this evidence.” – Certified School Nurse, Rio.

CELEBRITY CIPHER

Ralph Marston, who played one season in the National Football League with the Boston Bulldogs in 1929, said: “You’ve done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities.” This deal has a few possibilities, which you have probably seen before, but one of them still evades most players. South is in three no-trump, and West leads the spade queen. What happens if South ducks the first trick and West continues spades at trick two? What is West’s best defense if South ducks the first trick? What happens if South wins the first trick? South has seven top tricks: two spades, three hearts and two diamonds. He must obtain two more winners from clubs. But since he will lose the lead twice, the defenders might establish and run their spade suit first. If declarer ducks trick one and West continues spades, South plays on clubs and makes his contract. When East gets in with the club king, he does not have another spade to lead. If South does not win the first trick, West must shift to a diamond to defeat the contract – a play that would be very tough to find. If South wins the first trick, he does best to play a heart to the queen and start clubs from the board. To beat the contract, East must put up his king and return his remaining spade. When partner’s suit is one lead from being established, especially if you have only one card left in that suit, do your utmost to win the next defensive trick.

Choose the right pot By ADRIAN HIGGINS The Washington Post A 14-inch-diameter pot is the optimal size for a collection of herbs – large enough to do the job without becoming a major production in weight, cost and soil volume. Herbs need great drainage – some gardeners place clay shards over the drainage hole, others just line the pot with landscape filter fabric to keep soil from washing out. Broad, bowl-shaped containers hold moisture longer than regular pots and may drown herbs. Glazed ceramic, concrete and resin pots tend to be freeze-resistant and can be left outside in the winter, but they should be protected against saturation. Most terra cotta pots are not frost-proof and should be brought indoors in winter.

By NICOLE ANZIA Special To The Washington Post Whom do you call for advice when you’ve decided to move in with someone: a best friend, a parent, a priest, a psychologist? There are so many things to think about, and sometimes the organizational challenge of combining possessions gets overlooked, making an already stressful situation even worse. Here are a few pieces of advice to make the process easier.

Take an inventory

You can’t make decisions about what to keep if you don’t know what you have. This sounds obvious, but many people don’t actually know what they own. An accurate count of things such as plates, glasses, books and shoes will help when making decisions about what to keep, what to toss and what to sell or donate. It’s not enough to say I have “about 25 pairs of shoes,” because chances are, your estimate is incorrect. Take time to do an actual count. Once you each have your list, compare them to determine what to keep,

what to discard and what you might need to buy.

Know your space

If you don’t have a floor plan of your new home, measure and photograph each room. Knowing how much space you have to work with is crucial. Actual dimensions will be useful to resolve disagreements about whether a piece of furniture will fit in a room, and photos will help to recall architectural details. There are also resources available online, such as www. floorplanner.com, that can help you visualize where you will put furniture.

1 Garden Hill Lane, Unit 1 St. Charles $195,000

Office Space for Rent 303 East Main Street, St. Charles

Plan ahead

Take time to make realistic and reasoned decisions. Both people should be prepared to give up a few things, regardless of who is actually moving. Some decisions about what to discard will be obvious, others more difficult. Fortunately, the decision to give up a prized possession can be made less painful when you know the item is going to someone who really wants or needs it.

Home Help: Storage ideas for kids’ rooms to fit on shelves and under the bed, as well.

MORE CONTENT NOW editorial@kcchronicle.com

Make it fun

To many parents, the process of keeping kids’ rooms clean never seems to end. And while a kid’s room may never look quite like the perfect rooms in magazines, a few clever solutions can make it easier to get toys, books and clothes more organized.

There’s no reason something as pragmatic as storage can’t be fun, too. • Keep pens, pencils and markers together in a plastic paint can or flower pot the kids have decorated. • Place Velcro strips on toys and on playroom walls. Kids will enjoy sticking their toys to the wall, and you’ll enjoy a cleaner play space. • Get an unpainted wooden crate from a craft store, and paint, stain or decoupage it with whimsical colors and designs. – Family Features/Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores

Think vertical

If your child’s room is small or doesn’t have a lot of built-in storage, vertical storage may be helpful. • Add wall hooks or a peg rack at a height your child can reach and hang up sweaters, pajamas, jackets and book bags. • Tiered organizers that hang from a closet rod can hold small stuffed animals, clothing items or shoes. • Wall hangers with pockets can be hung on the back of a door to hold shoes, small toys and craft supplies.

Decorating tips

David Bromstad, HGTV star and celebrity interior designer, offers the following tips for anyone looking to add color to their home: • Identify a colorful object as the focal point of the room. Select bold items to build your room around, such as a piece of artwork, rug or chair that really makes a statement. • Coordinate your color transitions. For high-impact transitions, combine bolder shades with their more neutral counterparts and for a more tranquil transition, stick to softer or lighter shades that are from the same color family. • Highlight unexpected areas. Turn ordinary areas like ceilings, banisters or door frames into extraordinary spaces. If you want to keep walls neutral, paint a piece of furniture, such as a chair, headboard or the back of a bookshelf. – Brandpoint

Boxes, baskets and bins, oh my

Use containers to keep toys and other items sorted and make them easy to put away. Label the outside with words or pictures to help your child know exactly where to put things. • Baskets are lightweight and often have handles, so it’s easy for a child to take them off the shelf and put them back. Basket liners let you coordinate the look to match your child’s room. • Plastic storage bins can hold larger toys and play sets, offseason clothing and shoes. You can find bins

Get creative with storage areas by making containers colorful or use a plastic paint can as a pencil holder.

Tip on tomato transplants

Geneva

$499,900 Geneva

By ADRIAN HIGGINS The Washington Post When planting tomato transplants, remove the lower pairs of leaves and set the plant deeper than in its pot to encourage greater root growth. The prefab component of this 3,851-square-foot house is the structurally insulated panels used for its building envelope. costs too much. Gainsboro opted for prefab for the opposite reason. The system he is using is a faster, more efficient and less costly way to build the 12-inch thick walls that he is using to make his houses 60 percent more energy-efficient than conventionally

built ones in the Boston area. When he built the cumbersome, multi-layered walls on site, his crews found it frustrating and time-consuming. What took them three weeks, Bensonwood can do in 2 1/2 days.

Author Sheri Koones is on a mission to educate American homeowners about home building. Her first three books focused on the basics of home construction, borne of her own experience as a frustrated homeowner trying to remodel her Greenwich, Conn., house. At that time, she said in a recent interview, there was almost no information to help her make intelligent choices as she faced an endless number of decisions about this or that flooring material, plumbing fixture, roof shingle and on and on. With “Prefabulous + Almost Off the Grid: Your Path to Building an EnergyIndependent Home” (Abrams, $25), Koones presents a wide variety of prefab houses. A “modular” prefab house is constructed in sections in a factory, transported on flatbed trucks and joined together at the building site. A factory-built house minimizes waste; most site-built houses fill up a dumpster several times over. Factories, where the same house parts are assembled over and over, can more accurately predict what they will need so that waste is minimized.

A second plus with a prefab house is its speed of construction. While a site-built house takes about four to 15 months to complete, a prefab generally takes weeks. Because most of the work is done in a factory, there are no weather delays. Perhaps most importantly for owners, speeding up the construction process reduces the amount of stress that most endure as their house goes up. Koones says that prefab houses are built with higher quality control than site-built ones. In many factories now, the workers use sophisticated, computer-aided machinery that makes more accurate cuts so that the framing pieces fit together more easily; this in turn makes all the subsequent steps in the construction sequence, including the installation of interior and exterior materials and windows, faster and easier. Daniel Gainsboro of Now Communities, a Boston home-building firm whose work will be featured in Koones’ next book, is planning to do exactly that, using the Bensonwood Homes wall system featured in the “Unity House” described in her current book. In the past, production builders have eschewed prefab, saying that it
