Deb Marqui can usually be found on her porch waiting to greet visitors on the second Sunday of the month each spring and summer at the Healing Gardens at Stone Hill Farm in St. Charles.
St. Charles woman’s Mother’s Day tradition includes garden By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Geneva resident Marcia Dimmitt, a mother of three and grandmother of five, said she didn’t want to spend Mother’s Day at a restaurant or in a shopping mall. Instead, she and her husband, Norlyn Dimmitt, decided to spend a peaceful day outdoors at the Healing Gardens at Stone Hill Farm in St. Charles. “We like to go to nature preserves, and we’ve learned how to identify flowers,” said Norlyn Dimmitt. “We’re gonna see our kids later,” Marcia Dimmitt said before walking trails leading to numerous sites, including a rock garden, vegetable garden, wooded areas and a children’s garden. Deb Marqui, a mother and owner of the Healing Gardens in St. Charles, also said that’s how she enjoys spending her Mother’s Day – only her favorite part is greeting those who visit. When visitors come, their first stop is typically Marqui’s sun-filled porch to sign in. This year, visitors also received a map of the grounds painted by local artist Kathy McPartland. “I love to spend my Mother’s Day this way,” Marqui said, noting the gardens have been open each Mother’s Day since 2005. The gardens had a role in Marqui’s healing process as she fought non-Hodgkins lymphoma and breast cancer several years ago. She has been free of non-Hodgkins lymphoma since 1996, which she said had been a terminal diagnosis, and free of breast cancer since 2002. She said the gardens were very important as she went
through what she calls her cancer journey. “When I was in the garden creating, there wasn’t a thought of cancer,” she said. When she wasn’t gardening, she often worried about the results of a test or what would happen if her cancer ever came back. “You don’t think about that at all when you’re in nature,” she said. “When you’re taking your time and using your five senses, a miracle occurs. You find yourself in the present moment and that’s all we have.” Marqui considers herself a recovering workaholic. She owned her own business and sometimes wouldn’t get home until after dinner. When she switched careers, she found herself skipping lunch to take on another client or staying late to finish up some notes. She said workaholics tend to connect their self-worth to their jobs instead of to who they are as a person. Her gardens helped her learn how to be, not do, and to stop always trying to be perfect, she said. “You don’t realize that inside, you’re good enough. You don’t have to prove it,” she said. “I got caught up in that web. We don’t know how to extricate ourselves or take care of ourselves.” She said that’s an especially important message for mothers, who sometimes tend to give of themselves until there’s nothing of quality left to give. Marqui said she encourages people to live in the moment by touching and smelling the flowers at the Healing Gardens. “That’s one of the gifts I’d love to pass on to anybody – learn how to be and take it all in,” she said.

Race participants, volunteers give time, money to build hope in Caribbean nation By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For Colleen and Chris Ottens, concern for the people of Haiti is something never far from their mind. “We just have a real soft spot in our hearts for Haiti,” said Colleen Ottens. “We’ve not been on a trip down there, but we feel like we need to help Haiti.” On Saturday, the Ottens of South Elgin were among dozens of volunteers from the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities assisting organizers of the Hope for Haitians 5K Walk/Run for Education. The race Saturday kicked off at the Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve behind the Kane County Government Complex in Geneva. The event, now in its second year, raises money to fund schools operated by Rockford-based Hope for Haitians in seven villages in the pover-
ty-plagued Caribbean nation. Locally, the organization partners with several area churches, including the Roman Catholic parishes of St. John Neumann and St. Patrick in St. Charles, St. Katharine Drexel in Sugar Grove and St. Thomas More in Elgin. This year, the event drew about 275 runners and walkers willing to tackle the 3.1-mile course in and around Geneva on Saturday morning, said Theresa Kegley, development director for Hope for Haitians. Last year, the event raised about $25,000. Kegley said organizers believed they were on pace to equal that total this year. The event is one of two annual fundraisers organized by Hope for Haitians. The 5K was launched last year to tap into what Kegley said was “a huge base and a wonderful amount of energy” for Hope for Haitians’ cause in churches in and around the Tri-Cities.
“Our other event is an annual gala, which is targeted at a certain type of person,” Kegley said. “This is something that anyone can do, a much more family-friendly kind of event.” About 40 local volunteers were enlisted to help with the event, culled largely from Hope for Haitians committees at local churches. The Ottens, for instance, volunteered through a committee at St. Thomas More. Last year, they ran in the event, but opted to get involved in a different way this year. The couple believed helping Haitians is especially important now, as support for the nation, tied to the 2010 earthquake that killed more than 200,000 Haitians and disrupted the lives of more than 3 million, has faded through the years. “It’s hugely important,” Chris said. “We’re here to work for God and help the Haitians,” Colleen said.

BATAVIA 16-10, ST. CHARLES NORTH 4-6
Bulldogs hit on all cylinders in sweep By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Getting good production from every spot in the batting order, Batavia erupted in Saturday’s doubleheader at St. Charles North to regain control of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division baseball race. Limited to three hits in Friday’s series opener, Batavia rolled to victories of 16-4 and 10-6, and was only retired in order once in 14 times at bat. “We just kind of see our pitches. We work the count really well,” Bulldogs junior third baseman Andrew Siegler said. “We just keep our hands to the ball, short and quick to it, and we were really driving the ball today.” Batavia (22-6, 16-6 UEC River) took a half-game lead on idle St. Charles East (15-6 UEC River) atop the league standings. With North’s Cory Wright playing first base – not dealing, as the lefty did in a complete-game shutout Friday afternoon – the Bulldogs tallied 26 hits. North (13-15, 9-12) threw its ace in the opener, but Batavia solved Illinois-Chicago-bound lefty Ankur Shah to the tune of eight runs and eight hits in five innings. Junior left fielder Laren Eustace ignited the attack, reaching base in seven of 10 plate appearances on the day while stealing three bases and scoring five runs.
“I look to take pretty much any base that I can, whatever opportunity I can,” Eustace said. “If I see a guy bobble it or anything, I’m going to go for that base, because more times than not I’m going to get the extra base. It helps the team out.” While the bottom of the order wasn’t a complete mirror image of Eustace, it still did its share of grinding, with a signature sequence coming in the third inning of the nightcap. Sixth-place hitter Aaron Hurd smacked a two-out single up the middle and advanced to second base on a passed ball with Siegler at bat. Siegler deposited an RBI single to right field, and Batavia suddenly was en route to a four-run rally. Eustace punctuated the inning with a two-run triple, a sharp grounder that hugged the right-field line all the way to the wall. “To come back from [Friday], that was really hard, but we came back to it,” Siegler said. “Our head was there. We were definitely mentally there.” North coach Todd Genke figured Friday’s game could be a springboard to a late-season turnaround. While he lauded Batavia’s approach at the plate, Genke also conceded the North Stars made their share of mistakes. “It’s kind of hard to fathom. I mean, we had a lot of momentum coming in
with our big win, and I really was expecting us to come in and play well today,” Genke said. “We just gave up too many free bases. A lot of things that we need to control, we didn’t. Passed balls, wild pitches, just the little things that we talk about all the time. And they took advantage of it. That’s what good teams do.” The pitching staffs combined to walk 13 batters and hit three in the nightcap. North’s Tim Misner and Brandon Drawant both coaxed RBI walks, the latter of which brought the North Stars within 7-5 after five innings. That created a rare tense moment, but Siegler swiftly swatted it away with a two-out, two-run single to center in the sixth. Bulldogs first baseman Micah Coffey finished the day with five hits and five RBIs, while Robbie Bowman had four hits and drove in three runs. North scored four unanswered runs to chip away at a 5-0 Batavia lead in the opener before the Bulldogs pulled away. Senior righty Austin Shanahan retired the final 10 North Stars after Drawant’s RBI single made it 5-4 in the fourth. “I had confidence in my team, that they were going to back me up, so those runs didn’t really affect me,” Shanahan said. “I knew that we were going to hit the ball. We had done that in the first three innings, and then that lead just gave me a lot of confidence with the team. I wasn’t really worried about it.”
Of course, injuries are a part of sports, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t stink to high heaven when they occur. Seems like some of the top athletes in the Tri-Cities have been disproportionately affected by the dreaded I-word in recent months. Not to mention the S-word (surgery ... get your minds out of the gutter). We all know what happened with East hoops star Kendall Stephens, and now the team’s next best player, Dom Adduci, is dealing with the same labrum surgery that Stephens did. More recently but sticking with East, the Saints lost soccer star T.C. Hull to a torn ACL. East would have been a definite state title contender with Hull in the mix next fall. Without him ... we shall see. Speaking of athletes at the top of their sport, it’s been a shame to see Geneva pitcher Andy Honiotes shelved by elbow trouble. Not too often you’ve got a pitcher going to Miami from around these parts, and it would have been great to see what a healthy Honiotes could have done with his senior season. The Geneva girls soccer team has had a pretty good season, especially at the end, but where could the Vikings have been with Michaela Loebel (ACL surgery)? Batavia girls soccer has two ACL injuries among the same set of twins, let alone the rest of the team being banged up. The Vikings’ top girls track athlete, Hannah Davison, didn’t have a chance to return to Charleston because of a season-ending foot injury. Batavia baseball’s top-notch catcher, Dino Simoncelli, has missed much of the season with a hand injury, and the same goes for Geneva slugger Mitch Endriukaitis. The list goes on and on, it seems. Might not do any good to cry over it, but here’s hoping for a cleaner bill of health for area athletes in the weeks and months to come.
Tuesday The Kane County Chronicle previews the start of the girls soccer postseason. Defending Class 3A state runner-up St. Charles North opens the postseason this week in the DeKalb Regional, while Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles East each are among North’s potential opponents as play moves along in the Hoffman Estates Sectional.

Batavia No. 2 singles player Tim Murat waits to hit a return during Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament at Elgin High School. Murat defeated Geneva’s Nick McCarty, 6-2, 6-7 (9-11), 6-2, in the No. 2 singles final.
Bulldogs repeat as champs with new coach By MICHAEL GIBBS editorial@shawmedia.com ELGIN – New coach, same result for the Batavia boys tennis team after Saturday’s conclusion of the two-day Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament. Under first-year coach Brad Nelson, who also guides the girls program, the Bulldogs won their second straight River title after winning in 2012 under former longtime coach Bob Kummer. Unofficially, the Bulldogs won with 68 points, followed by St. Charles North (65), St. Charles East (62) and Geneva (51). “It feels good to win as a team,” said Batavia’s Tim Murat, who defeated Geneva’s Nick McCarty, 6-2, 6-7 (9-11), 6-2, in the final at No. 2 singles. “We feel really good for coach Nelson getting this title in his first year. That is a really nice present to give to our coach. We all feel really good about how we played.” North entered the tournament in third place in the River after the duals season and left feeling great about its second-place finish. “The way we played dou-
bles [Friday] was beyond belief,” North Stars coach Sean Masoncup said. “All you can ask for is to allow yourself to be great, do the best you can, and we did that. “Batavia is a great team. Now we move on to the sectional.” At No. 1 singles, Dom Amalraj of North defeated Ryan Sterling of Batavia, 6-4, 6-1, in the final. “I had some back issues coming into the tournament, but I was OK today,” Amalraj said. “I felt good with how I played today. I hit my shots, was consistent and took advantage of what I had to work with.” Murat said he did not know what went wrong during the second set of his final against McCarty, but was happy with how he came back in the third set. “I was all over the place in the second set,” he said. “The only thing I could do was wash away what happened in the second set. “I had to work in the third set to get my rhythm back. I couldn’t think about how bad I played in the second set. I just needed to think about what adjustments I needed to make to play better.”
In No. 3 singles, Matt Ernst of North defeated Drake Swift of Batavia in the final, 6-2, 7-5 At No. 1 doubles, North’s Grant Spellman and Keith Hedges defeated Batavia’s Adam Maris and Jeff Lorden, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in the final. At No. 2 doubles, Batavia’s Josh Boyle and Andrew Nelson came back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over North’s Mitch Riggs and Peter O’Brien. East picked up a title at No. 3 doubles as Connor Anderson and Steve Waynick outlasted Geneva’s Quade Spellman and Curran McQuillan, 6-2, 6-3. “Day 1 was a tough day for us. Day 2 was a really good day for us,” East coach Rob Livermore said. “We got a championship and a bunch of third places. Third doubles played great.” Said Geneva coach John Nickelson: “We did a pretty good job. We were shooting for a couple of championships and ended up second. But we played well, so I can’t complain. There were a lot of other good teams here.” At No. 4 doubles, Batavia’s Tom Guillemot and Emerson Hinzy outlasted North’s Thomas Ninan and Matthew Kramer, 6-1, 6-4.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips I sincerely hope no one is expecting Granddad to pay for the upcoming wedding. That he would attempt to blackmail the young couple in this way is shameful. Let’s hope they are mature enough to ignore him, and that they have a long and happy life together. Opa! Dear Abby: Our youngest daughter will graduate from college next month. The school is 10 hours away by car or a 2 1/2-hour plane ride. There are no direct flights. My husband and I are excited about this special day, and so is his 82-year-old mother. (I’ll call her Ethel.) She mentioned yesterday that she’s excited to go. Abby, Ethel is not a well woman. She has trouble walking, falls occasionally and hasn’t been out of this town for 30 years. She is also hypercritical. She does nothing but complain about other people, her health, this country, etc. Looking after her would be a huge burden. We’d like to attend this milestone event without the added stress of taking care of her. My husband and I have been married 25 years, and Ethel still complains about me. Because she’s such a handful, we have never taken her to dinner or a movie. How do we (kindly) tell her that what she has in mind is not going to be possible? – Ready To Celebrate In San Diego
Dear Ready To Celebrate: You and your husband should tell his mother that graduations in the best of circumstances are stressful events and can be difficult for someone who is unsteady on her feet. You could also mention that seating is limited, because it often is at graduations. Then offer to videotape the ceremony so she doesn’t have to miss it. • Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.

The Argyle Sweater
Dear Abby: My wife’s niece is marrying a wonderful man of Greek descent this summer. Her grandfather insists that his last name is too long and impossible to pronounce. He thinks they need to change the name when they marry. He went so far as to make them call him so he could tell them what he wanted. Then he gave them 10 days to “think about it” and call him back with their answer. He told the mother of the bride that if they don’t change the name, then he’s “just not into the wedding anymore,” implying that he won’t help them pay for the event. Needless to say, this has most of the family shaking their heads and thinking the old man has finally lost it. We understand that this was common practice for families passing through Ellis Island coming to America a century ago, but have you ever heard of this being done for a wedding? Being a therapist, I thought I’d seen and heard it all – until now. Please give us some insight. I’m hoping his “ladyfriend” will read your reply and share it with him. – Can’t Believe It Down South Dear Can’t Believe It: You have described a man who is used to being in control and is not above using his money to manipulate. A century ago when people came to this country through Ellis Island, many of them were escaping discrimination and wanted to leave their past behind them, which is why they Americanized their names. Others had it done “for” them by government officials who couldn’t understand them when they pronounced their names and wrote down what they thought they heard. (Years ago, in Sioux City, Iowa, my mother knew two brothers who walked through different lines and wound up with the names “Ginsberg” and “Landsberg.” I don’t know which was correct.) Still others were so eager to become “Americans” that they shortened or changed their names for that reason.

Stayman has its various uses
SOLUTION
CELEBRITY CIPHER
When beginners learn bridge, they are usually taught two bidding conventions: Blackwood and Stayman. They might also learn transfers into the majors, a complement of Stayman. This week, let’s look at Stayman in its simplest form and in its extensions. Interestingly, Stayman was not invented by Sam Stayman, but by his then bridge partner, George Rapee. But Stayman wrote the first article published on the convention, and his name stuck. (It was independently devised by Jack Marx from England.) The basic use of Stayman is to find a 4-4 fit in a major suit. Remember, in no-trump, a 4-4 fit will produce at most four tricks. But if that suit is trumps, you will often generate an extra winner by ruffing a loser. (And on a cloudless day, you will gain eight tricks from the suit.) Opener bids one no-trump, and responder replies two clubs. If the opener has one four-card major, he bids two of that suit. If he has two four-card majors, he rebids two hearts. And if he has no four-card major, he answers two diamonds. Then the responder judges what to do next. In today’s example, North uses Stayman despite his poor suit to try to find a 4-4 spade fit. When successful, he raises to game. West leads the heart king. This deal is easy if the trumps are 3-2. Win the first trick, cash the two top trumps, and drive out the club ace. Here, South loses only three tricks: one spade, one heart and one club. Finally, observe that three notrump should be defeated after the heart-king lead.
