The winning finalist will get a $1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to ride in the Swedish Days Grand Parade on June 23. Participants do not have to be from Geneva.

“It was a rousing success,” chamber volunteer coordinator Ellen Townsley said.

“We’ve got some bands applying, such as the Geneva HIgh School Brass/Woods Percussion group. We have a couple a cappella contestants and a girl is going to play the ukulele.”

The chamber will accept

the first 75 applicants to audition Saturday. The cost to enter is $25 per act.

Each audition is limited to two minutes for solo and group acts, according to the rules.

Judges will choose 20 to be semifinalists to perform starting at 6:30 p.m. June 19 on the main stage.

Ten finalists will be chosen for a performance and final judging at 6:30 p.m. June 22, Townsley said. Four qualified judges will review the contestants each step of the way, but

the public can vote on Facebook from 10 a.m.June 18 to 10 a.m. June 21 for semifinalist judging.

“Our winner last year was Grace Dwyer, a sixth-grade girl who sang, won a trophy and got to ride in the Swedish Days parade,” Townsley said.

“We are looking forward to the competition this year. Well have some real nice variety.”

Aldermen digest comprehensive plan

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES - Aldermen on Monday night got their first public look at the community-generated document that will guide growth and development in St. Charles for the next 15 years.

Mark Armstrong, chairman of the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, told the Planning and Development Committee that the document is the city’s first inwardly focused plan, and it omitted one element ev-

ery other comprehensive plan has called for since 1928: more bridges across the Fox River.

“This plan does not ask for any new bridges,” he said.

“That’s the first time that’s happened in our history.”

Work on the 2013 comprehensive plan began nearly two years ago. The process included resident and business questionnaires, interviews with key individuals and several workshops, including those for Charlestowne Mall, the east side, the west side and downtown.

Devin Lavigne of Houseal Lavigne, a planning consultant engaged to assist with the plan, said the draft comprehensive plan includes 10 umbrella categories that have 19 goals and more than 200 objectives.

The community has “given you quite the list of things to accomplish,” he said.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jo Krieger expressed concerns about some roadway proposals and their affect on neighborhoods. The other 4th Ward Alderman, Jim Martin, said

some of the suggestions were proposed years ago and didn’t fly.

“It’s nice to have goals and dreams, but there’s practicality to all of it,” Martin said.

First Ward Alderman Ron Silkaitis expressed concerns about the catalyst sites identified downtown, which Armstrong said are parcels with a high propensity for change.

“It’s like we’re forcing things to move to put something else in there,” Silkaitis said. “I don’t want to lose what St. Charles is.”

By no means do those site suggestions seal the fate of the properties, Lavigne said.

Rather, the uses outlined in the comprehensive plan would be used in the event that the businesses move or the properties sell.

Aldermen did not finish their discussion about the comprehensive plan before press time. Eventually, an updated final comprehensive plan will be forwarded to the City Council, which must hold a public hearing before formal adoption of the plan.

Geneva promotes overhead sewer program to avoid backups

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – City officials hope more residents take advantage of its overhead sewer program to avoid sewer backups during extraordinary flood events.

Since 2009, Geneva has offered a 50 percent matching grant up to $3,000 for home-

owners to install overhead sewers.

But only a half dozen residents have taken the city up on its offer, said Superintendent of Water & Wastewater Bob Van Gyseghem at the Committee of the Whole meeting Monday.

Batavia hears proposals for historical building

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen Monday began reviewing proposals for the city-owned Thomle building.

The city is exploring whether to sell the building at 2 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia. Since 1997, the city has owned the historical, 1876-built building at 2 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia.

Michael Grudecki, president of Vignette Home Decor in Batavia, wants to turn part of the building into an upscale lounge, Tini Lounge, that will specialize in martinis. He estimated the Tini Lounge will generate $18,784 in sales tax revenues during its first year of operation.

He also has other plans to

rent out the building’s lower level to another tenant.

The city in the past has rented the space to businesses at a reduced rate to encourage new businesses into downtown.

The latest business, Simonetti Studios, last year moved from the Thomle building to a second-story loft space at 30 Shumway Ave. Batavia Enterprises also has submitted a proposal for the redevelopment of the building for retail and residential space along with storage/flex space. The plan includes five one-bedroom apartments and one studio apartment.

The project would be developed by 246 East Wilson St., comprised of Batavia Enterprises, the owners of the property at 6 E. Wilson St., and other property owners.

program,” Van Gyseghem said. “The best way to avoid any type of sewer backup is to go to an overhead sewer.”

The public can visit the city’s website, www.geneva. il.us, click on water/wastewater and scroll down to where the program’s details are listed.

The program is for people who can demonstrate that they

have had sewer backups in the past, Van Gyseghem said.

The installation connects the drain in the basement floor and slop sink and redirects an overflow out. During a storm with the possibility of a backup, Van Gyseghem said homeowners also should refrain from using the bathroom.

Proud Saint made mark in theater

The King of Clubs Senior stayed busy with extracurricular activities at East

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When describing the activities 17-year-old Yash Bhatia participated in during his four years at St. Charles East High School, it might be easier to list what he wasn’t involved in.

His extracurricular activities included orchestra; theater; the golf and tennis teams; the speech, debate and math teams; the National Honor Society; the Music, Spanish and Science honor societies; and volunteering for places such as the St. Charles Public Library and LivingWell Cancer Resource Center.

Additionally, he served as captain for the school’s Science Olympiad team he co-founded his sophomore year, was president of both STC Guides and the Math Honors Society and worked as the school newspaper’s editor-in-chief.

“I barely ever rode the bus home,” Bhatia said.

Bhatia – a St. Charles School District 303 student since the first grade – is set to graduate May 26 with another, more unexpected title attached to his name: prom king.

He and his girlfriend, Lissette Gonzalez, were crowned prom king and queen May 4.

“We didn’t expect to win,” he said.

Bhatia said it hasn’t yet sunk in that he soon will be leaving East.

He is trying to enjoy his last few days as a Saint, he said.

As the opinions editor for the school newspaper since sophomore year, Bhatia spent much of his high school career letting the student body know his thoughts on various issues.

He tried to make his columns funny and entertaining while including a serious point, he said,

After high school, Bhatia expects he will keep in touch with the club closest to him – the Science Olympiad team, he said.

In its first year, the team was one spot away from qualifying for state, he said, and in its second year it won its division at state while ranking 16th overall.

“It was really cool,” Bhatia said of the win. He noted the team advanced to a more difficult division this year and placed 10th overall.

Bhatia likely will pursue a career in science at Washington University in St. Louis, he said, mentioning such fields of study as

medicine, chemical engineering and biomedical engineering.

His dream job would be working in the medical field for the United Nations, Bhatia said.

That aspiration stems from visiting his aunt who was director of medical services for the U.N., he said.

In high school, he really enjoyed the freedom to join whatever clubs he wanted and plans on participating in extracurricular activities in college.

Will he do as much as he did at East?

“Probably not as much,” Bhatia said, saying he will likely join a few clubs – maybe four or five.

ST. CHARLES – Michelle Mann started giving tours of St. Charles East High School before she herself even had the sprawling campus memorized.

Now, after four years of giving tours to visitors – including parents of incoming freshmen – the soon-to-be-graduate said she knows the building like the back of her hand.

“I’m a proud Saint,” Mann said. “I love my school. I love being able to talk about it.”

Mann is set to graduate from East on May 26 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.

In her four years as a Saint, Mann has participated in various activities, including the peer leadership program – which helps freshmen Michelle acclimate to the school – Mann and fine arts activities, such as theater, choir and band, she said.

“I’ve had a pretty fun-filled time at East,” Mann said, noting she sometimes spends up to 13 hours a day at school.

A big part of her high school career has been participating in the theater department, Mann said. She joined theater as a sophomore, but it wasn’t until this year that she really came into her own, she said.

This year – after normally doing one or two shows a year – Mann co-directed a one-act play and was the lead in two others, she said. She played Robin Goodfellow, or Puck, in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Dorothy in “The Wiz.” She said she never envisioned herself playing a lead role or directing a play, which she described as a welcome challenge.

“This year has really pushed me,” Mann said. “I loved it so much.”

She plans on attending the University of Notre Dame, she said. While she wants to act again and plans on joining a choir and trying out for marching band, she said those activities will be recreational pursuits. She plans to study international economics, she said.

“I will always be a Saint at heart,” Mann said.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A Batavia woman has been sentenced to prison for being under the influence of alcohol while crashing her car after she had dropped her child off at school.

Jeanette Baum, 32, of the 0-99 block of North Lincoln Avenue, Batavia, was sentenced Friday by Kane County Judge John Barsanti to four years in prison.

In January, Baum pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 2 felony.

At about 8:55 a.m. Nov. 27, 2012, Batavia police, responding to a 911 call, found Baum sitting in the driver’s seat of a white 2002 Mitsubishi Galant, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. The car had stalled after having crashed into a utility box near North Avenue and North Jefferson Street.

Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath, and observed slurred speech and glassy eyes, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Baum told police that she Jeanette just dropped Baum off her child at school and was returning home.

After Baum failed to suc-

cessfully complete field sobriety tests, she was arrested.

A breath test indicated that Baum’s blood-alcohol concentration was .190. Baum had three prior DUI violations, between 1997 and 2007, in Kane and DuPage counties.

At the time of the 2012 crash, Baum was on probation for a 2011 conviction in Kane County for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class 1 felony.

Part of Friday’s hearing

was to resentence Baum for violating terms of her probation sentence in that case. The sentence is four years for the aggravated DUI and four years for the drug possession. The terms are to be served concurrently.

Baum is eligible for dayfor-day credit. She was given credit for at least 165 days served in the Kane County Jail, where she has been held since her arrest in lieu of $20,000 bail.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is reminding joggers to be aware of their surroundings after a 29-year-old woman reported a man grabbed her buttock during a run Friday, police spokesman Paul McCurtain said.

The woman told police she was running north on the bike path in the 1100 block of Geneva Road in St. Charles at about 10 a.m. when a man walking in the opposite direction reached

out and grabbed her, police said.

The woman immediately stopped to confront the man, who ran into the wooded area near the Park Shore Apartments, police said. St. Charles and Geneva police officers reportedly searched the area, but didn’t find the man.

McCurtain described the situation as an “isolated incident” and said it is safe to run in St. Charles. He said that runners should carry a cellphone and immediately call 911 if they see anything suspicious.

Running to help Haiti

GENEVA – For Colleen and Chris Ottens, concern for the plight of the people of Haiti is something never far from their mind.

“We just have a real soft spot in our hearts for Haiti,” Colleen Ottens said. “We’ve not been on a trip down there, but we feel like we need to help Haiti.”

On Saturday, the Ottens, of South Elgin, were among dozens of volunteers from the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities to assist organizers of the Hope for Haitians 5K Walk/Run for Education.

The race started at the Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve behind the Kane County Government Complex in Geneva.

The event, now in its second year, raises money to fund operations at schools operated by Rockford-based Hope for Haitians in seven villages in the poverty-plagued Caribbean nation.

Race participants, volunteers give time, money to build hope Locally, the organization partners with several area churches, including the Roman Catholic parishes of St. John Neumann and St. Patrick in St. Charles, St. Katharine Drexel in Sugar Grove and St. Thomas More in Elgin.

This year, the event drew about 275 runners and walkers willing to tackle the 3.1mile course in and around Geneva on Saturday morning, said Theresa Kegley, development director for Hope for Haitians.

Last year, the event raised about $25,000. Kegley said organizers believed they were on pace to equal that total this year.

The event is one of two large fundraisers organized annually by Hope for Haitians. The 5K was launched last year to tap into what Kegley said was “a huge base and a wonderful amount of energy” surrounding her organization’s cause in churches in and around the Tri-Cities.

“Our other event is an an-

nual gala, which is targeted at a certain type of person,” Kegley said. “This is something that anyone can do, a much more family-friendly kind of event.”

About 40 local volunteers were enlisted to help with the event, culled largely from Hope for Haitians committees at local churches.

The Ottens, for instance, volunteered through the Hope for Haitians committee at St. Thomas More. Last year, they said they ran in the event, but opted for a different participation method this year.

The couple believed helping Haitians is especially important now, as support for the nation, tied to the 2010 earthquake that killed more than 200,000 Haitians and disrupted the lives of more than 3 million, has faded throughout the years.

“It’s hugely important,” Chris said.

“We’re here to work for God and help the Haitians,” Colleen said.

Kane to join debt recovery program Ladybugs, fairies and food

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s government soon could obtain a new tool to help the county collect some of the unpaid money it is owed.

Tuesday, the Kane County Board was poised to approve an agreement with the Illinois Comptroller’s Office, giving the county access to the state’s local debt recovery program.

The agreement to join had breezed through various County Board committees and was on the agenda for a vote at today’s County Board meeting.

Under the program, unpaid county taxes and fees can be collected by the state comptroller’s office on behalf of the county.

The unpaid debts would be confiscated by the state from various state payments, including income tax refunds and lottery winnings, among others, nor-

mally paid to individuals.

The money then is routed to the county government.

Kane County officials, including Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, have lauded the program’s potential.

The county has not firmly estimated how much it might collect.

But Lauzen has said the county potentially could receive hundreds of thousands of dollars it is not collecting now.

Lauzen has noted that the program could prove beneficial for certain county departments and offices, including the Kane County Animal Control Department, which has launched a renewed effort in recent months to collect unpaid registration fees from dog owners in the county.

Lauzen has said Animal Control must collect about $70,000 a month to meet its annual budget and avoid needing payments from else-

where in the county’s budget to pay expenses, including a $93,000 annual debt service payment for its Animal Control facility.

Kane County Circuit Court Clerk Tom Hartwell said the program also could benefit his office.

He said increasing collection of unpaid fees and other debts owed to his office has been “a top priority” since he took office about six months ago.

Hartwell said his office already has partnered with private debt collection companies, and he said the county’s participation in the state program would support his efforts.

He estimated as much as $1 million in revenue could be collected this year for the circuit clerk’s office through the various steps to collect unpaid debts.

“We’re still working on the numbers, but we believe it is a significant number,” Hartwell said.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday from the Kane County Courthouse, at 100 S. Third St., Geneva, to the Metra Train station in downtown Geneva. Garden advisers and 70 vendors will participate, coordinator Debbie Notaro said.

“This is our fifth year,” said Notaro, who owns My Secret Garden, a design and garden coaching company. “There will be all kinds of people selling garden art and anything to do with gardening. We’re having food this year and a speakers tent [covering] all different subjects – from organic gardening to how to tie a bow for

your container.”

Notaro estimated about 3,000 attended last year, and expects more this year.

New this year will be food, such as fresh fruit crepes from Chez Moi Café, garden pizza from Aurelio’s Pizza and Heavenly Hotdogs among others, she said.

Children’s activities include a ladybug release at noon at Country Naturals, 316 Campbell St., Geneva, and story time from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the Geneva Public Library, 127 James St., Geneva.

“And a whole group of fairies who belong to the World of Faeries Festival will walk around and read stories and throw fairy dust on people,” Notaro said. “We are also having the Stillman Nature Center in Barrington bring raptors.”

Hurdles in reforming U.S. food aid THE WASHINGTON POST Among the more laudable ideas in President Barack Obama’s budget for fiscal 2014 is a plan to modernize and reform the $1.5 billion U.S. food aid program.

Obama would end “monetization,” the inefficient practice whereby the federal government buys commodities from U.S. farmers and ships them abroad (on U.S.-flagged vessels) to governments and nongovernmental organizations that sell them and use the proceeds for development projects. Monetization raises costs for U.S. taxpayers while displacing goods overseas.

Alas, Obama’s plan has run into political opposition

on Capitol Hill. Members of Congress from both parties have objected, citing the potential losses for U.S. farmers, ports, ships and merchant seamen. Not surprisingly, these senators and representatives generally hail from port cities or farm states.

A bit more surprisingly, perhaps, some of them are from the D.C. area – on April 5, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., sent a letter to the president arguing that his plan “would significantly reduce the amount of U.S. farm products our nation could provide to those in need around the world. It would also threaten our national security preparedness by reducing the domestic sealift

capacity on which our U.S. military depends.” Signatories included Gerald E. Connolly, D-Va., and Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C. Interestingly, two of these legislators told us that they don’t oppose Obama’s plan on its merits. Norton’s spokesman said she “thinks the president’s policy is correct,” but signed the letter as a courtesy to Cummings and because of a collateral concern that food stamps might be affected. Connolly, too, said Obama’s plan would make sense in “an ideal world,” but political realities are such that foreign aid cannot get funding unless domestic U.S. constituencies also benefit.

Connolly’s rationale is a familiar one – indeed, it was part of the Eisenhower administration’s original argument for food aid. But poor people abroad have been hostage to interest-group politics in the U.S. long enough.

The time has come for some fresh thinking of the sort Rajiv Shah, Obama’s foreign aid administrator, is trying to introduce.

Among the many points Shah makes are that food aid shipments have declined by 64 percent in the last decade anyway, so it’s a bit late for farmers and merchant mariners to be claiming they can’t survive without them.

In fact, farmers are prospering as never before,

thanks – in part – to commercial exports.

As for the merchant marine, the number of U.S.flagged ships has been in steady decline for decades, yet the U.S. military managed to prosecute several wars overseas. If we need sealift for national security, it would be more transparent to subsidize that directly.

Perhaps it’s true that funding for foreign aid, always politically tenuous, has depended on greasing interest groups. But it’s also true that foreign aid depends on persuading taxpayers, in general, that their funds are being well spent. And there are more taxpayers than special interests.

Kaneland has been on the wrong side of extensive postseason history with Rosary in recent years, and the top-seeded Royals are riding high after a thrilling win against St. Francis in penalty kicks on Saturday to give Rosary the Suburban Christian Conference title.

But the Knights tied the Royals during the regular season, and Kaneland goalkeeper Jordan Ginther is capable of matching the game-changing goalkeeping play Rosary often gets from Lauren Frasca.

Double dose of bad luck for Batavia twins

ATAVIA – Identical twins are known to mimic one another in the name of good-natured mischief, but the Renfus twins took it further than either of them would have liked this season.

In a bizarre and improbable twist, both sisters suffered torn ACLs this soccer season, exactly one month apart. The sophomores will be reduced to moral supporters as the Bulldogs open the IHSA Class 3A Lake Park Regional today against Hoffman Estates.

Tori Renfus went down with a right knee tear March 26 during an early-season match against Lake Park. On April 26, Paige Renfus tore her left ACL during overtime of a tournament match in Burlington, Iowa.

“I felt like I wanted to cry,” Tori Renfus said. “Neither of us usually go down in pain. We usually walk it off, so when Paige fell to the ground, I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t think it was the ACL like mine.”

Paige Renfus will have her surgery today through Fox Valley Orthopedics, the same group that handled Tori’s procedure on April 16.

Unlike Tori, Paige also tore her MCL. “She’s been asking a lot of questions and I’ve done my best to answer them,” Tori Renfus said. “I told her some exercises she should do prior to the surgery to strengthen the quad muscle so rehab is a little easier, and what to expect before the surgery and after.”

Added Paige: “Tori went into it blindly, and I have the gist of what will happen to me when I do it, so I think it’s easier for me.”

They credit their teammates for plenty of moral support, and Bulldogs coach Mark Gianfrancesco said the twins have reciprocated.

“It goes to show what type of people they are and what type of team we have that they want to come out and be a part of it,” Gianfrancesco said. “Even in practice, it can be raining, they want to come out. I tell them not to come out. They want to go shag balls – ‘Nope, don’t do that.’ They want to go out and shake hands – ‘Hey, we’ll bring it over to you.’ They just want to be involved.”

Both 16-year-olds were part of a deep rotation at forward for Batavia (11-4-3), with Tori Renfus having little chance to make her

mark since her injury came so early in the season.

Tori Renfus said her injury came about when she landed poorly while pursuing a rebound, while Paige Renfus’ leg bent awkwardly after contact with a defender.

Considering what happened to Tori on March 26 and Paige on April 26, the twins joked that they’ll be advising their older sister Kallie Renfus – a former Rosary soccer player and current college freshman at Notre Dame – to stay in her room May 26.

While their shared medical fate this spring defies the odds, their give-and-take as twins is much more relatable.

Cougars drop road trip finale to Clinton KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE Clinton, IOWA – A quality start from Pierce Johnson was nullified by the offense for the Kane County Cougars, who fell in their second straight contest, losing to the Clinton LumberKings, 4-0, on Monday at Ashford University Field.

Johnson (1-3) surrendered seven hits over his six innings of work, yielding three earned runs while fanning six.

Clinton (17-18) broke through against Johnson in the bottom of the third when Ketel Marte led off with a single and scored on a double off the bat of Dario Pizzano.

Pizzano scored when Guillermo Pimentel hit a two-run homer to put the LumberKings up by three.

One more LumberKings run scored in the bottom of the fifth. Tim Lopes singled with one out and advanced to second when Pizzano reached on an error by shortstop David Bote. Two batters later, Patrick Kivlehan singled up the middle off Johnson’s glove to score Lopes, giving the LumberKings a 4-0 cushion.

Tyler Pike (2-3) pitched

Next for the Cougars Peoria at Kane County, 6:30 p.m. today, AM1280 the first five innings for the LumberKings and allowed only three hits.

The only real threat for the Cougars came in the fifth after Pike walked Bote with two outs and allowed a double to Yaniel Cabezas, but Oliver Zapata popped out to second, ending the inning.

David Holman pitched the next three innings out of the Clinton bullpen while Oliver Garcia closed it in the ninth despite loading the bases.

The Cougars’ Jeff Antigua struck out five of the six batters he faced in his two innings in relief of Johnson.

The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark tonight to open a four-game series against the Peoria Chiefs with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.

Right-hander Ian Dickson will start for the Cougars against southpaw Hector Hernandez.

The Bulldogs’ program has been on the upswing the past couple years after a multiseason rut before Gianfrancesco took the reins. Gianfrancesco noted that a substantial chunk of last year’s team that advanced to a regional final against Conant is back.

This year, the Bulldogs are the favorite by seed to win a regional crown, with Lake Park or Glenbard North to provide the opposition in Friday’s regional final if the Bulldogs handle lightly regarded Hoffman Estates tonight.

“It’s nice to get the expectation of having a high seed and the goal of winning a regional,” Gianfrancesco said.

“Winning a regional, every year, at the minimum, should be the goal. They worked hard during the season to put themselves in that position.

“He’s the guy who pushes me,” Medina said. “The one who really sees something in me, and I’m trying my best to perform as well as the hurdlers we’ve had in the past few years, like Rob Mohr and David Voland, those superstars.”

Before a recent practice, Batavia head coach Dennis Piron introduced Medina as a “superstar,” too.

That’s one reason Medina hopes to return to his alma mater as a volunteer coach next season, when he plans to attend Waubonsee Community College.

Whether it’s a Princeton recruit such as Mohr or someone entering the stretch run of his track career, Piron aims to get everyone fired up.

“He makes it a lot of fun to come to practice every day because, I mean, he’s not your usual coach,” junior

sprinter Rourke Mullins said.

“He jokes around with you, but he’s also serious when he needs to be serious. He makes us work hard, and then he can also joke around with us and have a lot of fun.”

Good Knights: Kaneland enters Friday’s 2A Sterling Sectional on the heels of a comfortable win in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Meet.

Competing at Dixon, whose Dukes edged the Knights by one point at conference in 2012, the Knights created a sizable lead on runner-up DeKalb and the rest of the field.

Highlights included thrower Nate Dyer, who won the shot put and was third in the discus.

“We’re pleased with the victory,” said Knights coach Eric Baron, whose team edged St. Charles North for the Kane County title earlier this month. “We know that we can hit even better than that. but it’s a good steep in the right direction once things got rolling.”

Batavia senior Omar Medina keeps hovering around the 3A boys track and field state qualifying standard for the 300-meter hurdles.

He set his tunnel vision on 39.84 seconds a long time ago.

Now he yearns to match or eclipse it.

Medina carries a season personal record of 42.7 – he ran 41.8 last spring – into Friday’s Hoffman Estates Sectional, which, for all intents and purposes, is the only time when going under qualifying time counts.

“I can already feel that I’m better than where I was at last year,” Medina said. “I just feel like I need to pick up the pace even more, because I know if I can do that – cut down my time by, like, two seconds – I can make it downstate this year. That’s what I’m shooting for.”

Medina took up track in eighth grade and immediately embraced it.

“It was more fun, if anything, and then that’s kind of what got me into doing it in high school,” he said.

He began as a long jumper as a freshman before shifting to track events, where he quickly took a shine to veteran hurdles coach Mike

“I thought it was a good win.

We made a couple of defensive mistakes, but overall I think we had a nice day against two good pitchers,” Central coach Wade Maisto said. “ ... We’re putting base runners [on] almost every inning and we’re getting something going. Overall, I was happy.”

Familiar feeling for Bieterman First-year Aurora Central Catholic coach Sean Bieterman is presiding over a major turnaround for the Chargers, who are enjoying one of their best seasons in program history.

The Chargers, who are guaranteed their first winning season since 2006, entered play Monday with a 25-6 record.

Bieterman is familiar with big-time baseball success, having coached at former powerhouse Driscoll from 2003 to 2009 before moving to Lincoln-Way Central.

“This team, this group, this program, the way we’re evolving, is reminding me so much of what we were able to build over at Driscoll,” Bieterman said. “I mean, it really is. It’s the same kind of kid. It’s a tough kid, it’s a selfless kid, it’s a kid who cares about the team first. It’s a kid that’s really passionate and driven to win, and also driven to improve themselves on a daily basis.”

St. Charles North’s season is a good reminder to all the winning program out there (not just baseball) to appreciate the good times and not take success for granted.

The North Stars are by no means at rock-bottom but it looks like they could land on the wrong side of .500, which for a program that has been so consistently good is still quite a drop-off.

Even some of the best coaching staffs and programs with

great traditions aren’t immune to the cyclical nature of high school sports.

Now, all that said, the North Stars could still make some noise in regionals next week. With a couple pretty doggone good lefties in Shah and Wright, if the Stars have a good day(s) with their gloves and bats, maybe they can sneak out a low-scoring upset or two.

DAN BERENDT Geneva, Sr., OF What he did: Berendt homered four times during a three-game Geneva sweep against Elgin, including a 4-for4 day with two home runs in the Vikings’ 12-6 win Monday. He also turned in one of the best throws of the season May 7 when his throw from right field retired Batavia speedster Laren Eustace as Eustace tried to tag up and go to third base.

Kaneland’s John Hopkins is rounding back into form. Hopkins, who was unable to pitch for most of the first half of the season with an injury, threw a complete game Saturday as the Knights edged Streator, 2-1, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover.

Shortstop is not the position where a team wants to be frequently shuffling its personnel, but that is the scenario St. Charles North has found itself in this spring.

A position that has been a traditional strength for the North Stars has been more of a trial-by-error, seasonlong audition for the North Stars this season, though North coach Todd Genke might be arriving at a solution in time for the postseason.

Frankie Farry’s first game as the team’s starting shortstop came Thursday at Batavia, and Farry handled the position smoothly as North’s defense turned in a rare, errorless game, and beat Batavia, 3-0.

“He’s got some good movement, he’s got some good feet,” Genke said. “I told him at practice the other day, we’re going to try to make some changes in the lineup.

“Timmy Misner’s been through a lot but, to me, Misner’s a second baseman by trade. He’s been doing a great job for us, but I just felt it was maybe time to move him around a little bit, and you saw what happened. I think Frank stepped up today.

Maybe we found something.”

Farry, also a pitcher for North, was again solid at shortstop Saturday as the North Stars dropped a pair to the Bulldogs in a doubleheader. With infield defense being an adventure at times this season, Genke has kept an open mind about pinpointing the best defensive lineup. Catcher Ryan Thomas also saw time at third base against Batavia as North sophomore Carson Schmitt filled in behind the plate.

“We’ve got some guys that are pretty versatile, which is really nice to have at the varsity level,” Genke said. “We’re going to try to use that versatility to our advantage and give guys opportunities that deserve it.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Children’s toys often tell us how times have changed. Canada stopped making pennies last year, so saving money a penny at a time will soon be a problem in Canada. The United States also may stop making pennies, since the cost of the copper in a single coin is more than one cent. But, ironically, the cost of a 19th-century mechanical bank has gone up. A Speaking Dog bank set a record at $63,250 a few years ago. The girl with the dog on that bank was wearing a blue dress. Most of these banks have a girl with a red dress. The bank was sold at Morphy Auctions in Pennsylvania in 2007, before the economic downturn in 2008.

And the record bank had almost perfect paint. But the Speaking Dog bank still is very popular. It sells today for prices that range from $150 for one with worn paint and rust to over $14,500 for an excellent example. But watch out; copies have been made. The cast-iron mechanical bank was made by the J. & E. Stevens Co. of Cromwell, Conn., in about 1895.

A: The New York World’s Fair opened on April 30, 1939, the 150th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration as president of the United States. It ran until the end of October that year, reopened in May 1940 and closed on Oct. 27, 1940. Many souvenirs were made for the fair. Items that picture the Trylon and Perisphere are especially wanted by collectors. The three-sided Trylon and

spherical Perisphere, symbols of the fair, were temporary structures made of plasterboard over steel frames. Check the website 1939NYWorldsFair.com for more information on the 1939 fair. Value of your clock: about $100.

Q: I have six issues of Ladies’ Home Journal from 1898. They’re in pretty good condition. I was thinking they might be worth something to a collector. What do you think?

*** Q: I inherited an antique Chippendale maple dresser with four drawers. There’s a large tag inside one drawer that’s titled “Florian Papp.” Handwritten information on the card says the dresser is a “genuine antique” made in New England and that it was sold by Florian Papp in 1927. I would like to learn more.

A: Florian Papp (1883-1965) was born in Hungary and immigrated to the United States in about 1900. He worked as a cabinetmaker and furniture restorer before opening a gallery in New York City, where he specialized in selling European antiques. The Florian Papp antiques and art gallery is still in business, now operated by the third generation of the Papp family. It has always been a very important gallery, and the provenance on the card is a guarantee that the dresser was made in New England and is not a reproduction. *** Q: I found a platter in my mother’s china cupboard that doesn’t match anything else she had, and I have no idea where it came from. The mark on the bottom is a circle with a crown on top.

Is this platter old and valuable?

A: The mark you describe was used by Geo. Borgfeldt & Co., a New York City importer. The company was in business from 1881 until about 1976.

Geo. Borgfeldt & Co. imported china and earthenware, dolls, toys, glassware, novelty goods and other items from Europe and sold them to retailers in the United States. The mark was used beginning in 1936. “Celebrate” is one of the trademarks owned by Borgfeldt.

Your platter probably was made in the late 1930s, before the outbreak of World War II. It is difficult to sell a piece that probably was part of a set. Value: about $40.

Q: I have a small set of Candlewick glass, but three of them are cloudy. I believe this is from being washed in a dishwasher. Is there any way to make them clear again?

A: Cloudiness is caused by deposits of calcium carbonate left by new phosphate-free dishwasher detergents, especially if they’re used with hard water.

Manufacturers removed phosphate from their dishwashing products in 2010, after several states banned the ingredient because it contributes to the growth of algae in the environment. To clear up cloudy glasses, put a cup of white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher and run the glasses through the cleaning cycle without detergent. New ‘Star Trek’ a joyride for viewers

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Despite its grim title, this sequel to J.J. Abrams’ really, really good, but not quite great reboot of the “Star Trek” franchise is going to be an absolute joyride for a lot of viewers.

The writing has been knocked up a few notches; though Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) still remain at the film’s center, the rest of the crew has been given more to do this time; and most important, “Into Darkness” is truly a valentine to “Star Trek” fans, especially those who have been into it since the original TV show.

The film is filled with little shout-outs to us. A couple of times the script just walks up and says hello to hardcore fans of the show and, to a lesser degree, the first films.

Newcomers to the “Star Trek” universe won’t realize what’s going on, while certain references will give big smiles to those in the know.

The story takes place in 2259. No, that’s not a star date, it’s the year. Some of it happens in San Francisco, some in London, some out in space, the final frontier. Spock is and always will be a stick-to-the-rules guy. Kirk is a free-

wheeling leader who does what needs to be done to get things done. Someone utters the words “acting Captain Sulu.”

Actually, there’s so much going on in this movie, I’m going to let loose with four lines of dialogue, totally out of context.

“We’re defenseless, sir!”

“Beam me out!”

“What are you doing with that Tribble?” (I told you there were references.)

“Star Trek Into Darkness” starts the way great action movies should start, with a lot of action. Kirk and Bones are literally on the run, Spock – in a cool copper colored suit – is busy putting his life on the line. Interplanetary rules are broken, souls are bared, fast banter is volleyed, and attitudes are very much on display, as are relationships. The romantic one between Spock and Uhura has become serious; swinging single Kirk is revealed to have a thing for alien females – yes, that’s plural (you can tell they’re aliens because they have tails!).

“Star Trek” has always been famous for making its stories the most important piece of the puzzle. There’s no exception here, and “Into Darkness’” story really kicks into gear with the introduction of the villainous John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch, British TV’s

current Sherlock Holmes). Initially we don’t know much about this guy except that he’s responsible for what would generally be termed a terrorist attack on a major city, and that he is, according to the folks in Star Fleet, “one of our own.”

There are spectacular visuals to match the wild action, and there are moments of quiet, serious talk that nicely complement perfect segments of comic relief.

Best of all, the writers have learned an important lesson from 2009’s “Star Trek.” This time they’ve made sure to stay away from anything resembling the time-space continuum business of that film that had even some of the most diehard fans wondering what was going on.

Good posture is better for your body than just looks Dear Doctor K: I have mild back pain. I sit at a desk all day and tend to slouch. My mother says that sitting up straight may help. Is she right?

Dear Reader: I hope it’s true.

Otherwise, my mother (like yours) was wrong. And I think it is true.

Most of us get back pain at some point in our lives. It’s usually not caused by an accident. Rather, it develops because, in going about our regular activities, we strain muscles and ligaments in the back that support our spines. This happens during the course of day-to-day life. Repetitive activities at work or home, such as sitting at a computer or lifting and carrying, may produce tension and muscle tightness that result in backache.

Fortunately, there’s a lot we can do to prevent back pain.

Most of all, it’s important to be physically fit and to maintain a healthy weight. Minding your posture helps, too.

Posture is the way you hold your body while standing, sitting or performing tasks such as lifting or bending. If your posture is good, the bones of your spine align correctly.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff If your posture is bad and the spinal bones are not in proper alignment, there is extra stress on the muscles and ligaments.

They try to correct for the bad posture and become injured from the strain. This is how poor posture can both cause back pain and make it worse.

Try the following exercises.

They can help improve your posture and head off back pain: • Imagery. Think of a straight line passing through your body from ceiling to floor.

Your ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles should be even and line up vertically as you stand. Now imagine that a strong cord attached to your breastbone is pulling your chest and rib cage upward, making you taller.

• Shoulder blade squeeze. Sit up straight in a chair with your

hands resting on your thighs.

Keep your shoulders down and your chin level. Slowly draw your shoulders back and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of five; relax. Repeat three times.

• Upper-body stretch. Stand facing a corner with your arms raised, hands flat against the walls, elbows at shoulder height, with your right foot forward. Bend your right knee, but keep the left knee straight.

Keep your back straight and your chest and head up. You should feel a nice stretch across your chest. Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds. Relax.

Now and then, you’ll meet someone who has perfect posture and hasn’t had to work on it. It’s just comes naturally.

Most of us, however, tend to slouch. Our mothers really were right: Good posture not only makes us look better, it also protects us against back pain.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17, and the guy that I love is 19 and is in the military service.

I love him with all of my heart and soul, and he says that he feels the same way about me. We constantly talk about getting married when he gets discharged in three years.

My problem is that in three weeks, he is going overseas for 24 months.

He said that he put in for overseas duty because he wanted to see some of the world before he settles down to get married. This move has made me very upset and unhappy.

This means that we will not see each other until he comes back from overseas.

Both my parents and my older sister think that I would be stupid to sit at home two years dateless! I also am not 100 percent positive that we will feel the same way about each other once he returns. A lot can happen in two years.

Dear Nameless: Most psychologists agree that left-handed children should NOT be forced or “encouraged” to convert to right-handedness.

Doing so could be psychologically damaging.

Furthermore, being left-handed is hardly a handicap. Many of the world’s most successful people are southpaws, including three of our last four presidents.

Dr. Wallace: Why is the drinking age 18 on a cruise ship? My dad thinks it’s because if 18-year-olds get drunk they can’t drive and kill innocent people.

Dear Bessie: The minimum drinking age in all 50 states is 21, but once cruise ships, most of which are registered in foreign countries, are in international waters, they generally use 18 as the minimum drinking age.

The reason is simple: maximizing profits. The more drinkers on board, the more money they rake in.

Dear Abby: I am a woman in my late 40s and I hate sex. I always have and always will.

I’m disabled, and it has always been torture. I never got any positive benefits out of it.

How does responder find 4-4 spades?

This week, we are looking at the Stayman convention, whose primary job is to try to find a 4-4 major-suit fit after opener immediately shows a balanced hand.

When the opening bid is one no-trump and responder bids two clubs, it asks opener to show a four-card major. If opener has two of them, he rebids two hearts. Then, what does the responder do when he has four spades and fewer than four hearts?

If he has game-invitational strength, it depends upon system. If one no-trump – two notrump is natural, showing about nine points and inviting game, then responder continues with two no-trump. Since he used Stayman, he must have a fourcard major, and since he has not raised hearts, he must hold four spades. But if one no-trump – two no-trump is not natural, perhaps a transfer to diamonds, responder rebids two spades.

Opener is expected to place the final contract. Here, with an absolute maximum, he signs off in three no-trump.

After West leads the diamond king, what should South do?

Declarer has six top tricks and at least three more can come from the clubs. However, if East has the club king, there is a risk the opponents will collect four diamond tricks to defeat you. The answer? Duck the first trick. If West leads another diamond, it gives you two diamond tricks. If West shifts, you win in hand and run the club 10 (or queen).
