MARENGO – The proposed development within one of Marengo’s more controversial annexation deals raises a “huge concern” over groundwater contamination, a newly released environmental report found. The McHenry-Lake Soil and Water Conservation District released the Natural Resources Information report earlier this month to city officials, after the two spent much of March disagreeing on whether the report was even needed. “I hope they will at least look at what’s in the report and allow land uses that don’t have the land pollution potential,” District Manager Ed Weskerna said. In the 59-page report, the district details the highly permeable, gravel-laden soils that make up most of the 340 acres west of Route 23 owned by A.R. Land Co. that has been a part of Marengo’s ini-

tial effort to extend its southern borders to Interstate 90. Since last summer, the city has been trying to add nearly 2,400 acres along Route 23 to reach the interstate and begin formal negotiations with the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority on constructing an interchange intended to spur residential and commercial development in the area. The proposed annexation agreement with A.R. Land has drawn concerns from neighboring Riley Township officials, who have argued that the environment could not support some of the company’s proposed land-use changes. The penetrable soils revealed in the report’s findings makes it nearly impossible to support heavy, pollutive industries without contaminating the groundwater in the area, Weskerna said. Two-thirds of A.R. Land’s site that is slated to be rezoned general business is “unbuildable” given the soil restrictions, the report found.

A proposed 40-acre compost facility on the property also would need to be carefully executed and not disturb the groundwater in the area. But the report didn’t reveal new information for Marengo, City Manager Gary Boden said. The city’s contracted engineers from H.R. Green knew about the soil conditions when developing the city’s comprehensive plan late last year, he said. The environmental issues raised in the report also don’t require immediate attention since A.R. Land has yet to execute its future development plans, Boden said. County and state agencies, such as the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, will fully vet and regulate A.R. Land’s proposed landuse changes once the proposals actually happen, Boden said. “I think there are a lot of belt and suspenders out there for protecting the environment,” Boden said. “I hate the fact that some of us are

casting us as not being sensitive to that ... I don’t think we have a bad environmental record. The bottom line here is that the zoning is not the overriding issue.” Engineers from H.R. Green still will evaluate the district’s environmental report to see whether the findings would require any City Council action. They will give a report during the council’s May 28 meeting, where aldermen also are expected to vote on the A.R. Land annexation, Boden said. Riley Supervisor Karen Schnable said the report’s findings reaffirmed her belief that A.R. Land’s property was susceptible to groundwater contamination. Schnable initially turned the conservation district’s attention to the issue. “To me, it needs to be researched more before they change the zoning,” Schnable said. “They need to look into it and study it to make sure the zoning is proper for the land.”

Huntley swears in new trustees By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Two new trustees ushered in a revamped Village Board for the next four years after being sworn in Thursday alongside returning Village President Chuck Sass and trustee John Piwko. First-time trustees Ronda Goldman and J.R. Westberg anxiously waited to raise their right hand and recite the oath of office at the end of Thursday’s board meeting. They watched village officials earlier recognize outgoing trustees Pam Fender and Rick Hahn for their service on the board. “I have a lot to learn, but I will never forget my promises to the residents,” Goldman said. “I stood behind being a

liaison with the counties, the townships and the chamber so that there will be someone from the village always represented.” In Huntley’s only contested race, Goldman topped all candidates vying for three trustee positions in April’s municipal election. Piwko and Westberg also secured positions, while former trustee Jay Kadakia lost his comeback bid. Westberg, who has served on the village’s Plan Commission, takes over as trustee after losing his first Village Board bid in 2009. The former Air Force veteran said his number one goal is to limit the use of tax dollars with the development proposals that frequently require the board’s attention. “Much like the campaign,

my focus is that any new development that happens in the village is primarily being picked up by the developers, not taxing the residents anymore,” Westberg said. Piwko returns for his second full term as village trustee after being appointed to the board in 2007. During the election, he indicated he wanted to finalize certain pet projects, including the development of a connected sidewalk and bike path system throughout Huntley. Sass, who has served as village president since 2001, returns for another four years after overseeing numerous projects that helped grow and develop Huntley during the 2000s. Both Piwko and Sass said goodbye to colleagues Fender

and Hahn. Hahn declined to run for re-election after playing out his 2011 appointment to the board. He will soon return to the Plan Commission. Fender, a community organizer who has served since 2005, relinquished her trustee seat to focus on her candidacy for Grafton Township supervisor. She lost to independent Jim Kearns in April’s election after defeating incumbent Linda Moore in the February primary. After being recognized, Fender said she would take time away from the public spotlight and focus on her personal life. “I’m proud of (Goldman and Westberg). They will do a great job for this community,” Fender said. “Huntley is in good hands.”

Good games If you go

By JAMI KUNZER jkunzer@shawmedia.com Marianne Ricciardi might have lost her son to Ewing’s Sarcoma, but her battle against the disease is far from over. The Huntley woman keeps fighting because she believes that’s what her son, Pasquale (Patsy), would have wanted. Patsy died at age 25, having been diagnosed with the disease three and a half years earlier. He worked in the cement business, played football and enjoyed body-building at the time. “He could disarm somebody with his personality within a matter of minutes,” his mother said. “He was that kind of kid.” Marianne remembers a day, near the end, when both were worn down from treatments, tests and bad news. Patsy patted his mother on the leg, told her, “We have to make the best of it.” Unlike most with the disease, a cancer of the bone or soft tissue, Patsy was diagnosed at an older age. He shared a hospital floor with mainly children, all fighting to survive. He saw families, like his, struggling both emotionally and financially. He’d hear crying from nearby hospital rooms, knock on the door and ask if he could come in. He’d draw cartoons, talk with the kids about superheroes or wrestlers, or play video games. “You have to do something to help these kids,” he told his mother. So that’s what she’s done. A former nurse, she created Wings of an Angel, a charity in his honor designed to help families facing Ewing’s Sarcoma with support, direction and assistance. To raise money to do so, she hosts Bingo weekly at McHenry VFW Post 4600. The profits from the Tuesday night games go toward Chicago Thunder Children’s Charity, a nonprofit group that assists children who are

Marianne Ricciardi works at a bingo night at the VFW Hall in McHenry, on April 26. Ricciardi raises money for her charity Wings of an Angel, which she started to honor he son who died of Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare pediatric cancer. underprivileged or battling life-threatening illnesses. The Friday night games go toward Wings of An Angel. Ricciardi is part of both groups. In the hole since beginning this month, those involved strive to draw in more players. “Now Bingos are a dime a dozen, and the economy isn’t helping,” Ricciardi said. “But still, it gives us the opportunity to get more on a weekly basis than we would any other way short of robbing a house.” What serves as a game, perhaps a way to win money for many, has become a lifeline for Wings of an Angel and the families it supports. Families routinely in and out of the hospital, parents missing work and facing endless

medical bills. “When you’re a single mom and one of your kids has a terminal illness, and there’s no milk in the refrigerator for your 3 year old, $5 is a lot of money,” Ricciardi said. “I take the money directly to these people so there’s no middle man.” A part of support groups for the families, Ricciardi hears their stories, helps in any way she can. She once bought tickets for the Nutcracker for a family because a little girl wanted to grow up to be a ballerina. She’s called funeral homes to get free or reduced services for families that just couldn’t afford them. “I’ve lived through it already,” she said. “It’s helpful, but it drags you down a bit sometimes. If you can be of

help to someone, that’s what inspires me. “These people are lost. I had medical knowledge, and still I was lost when it came to this disease. Imagine a mom with two little ones that works at McDonalds. It’s not what you have. It’s what you do.” That’s how Patsy lived, she said. He lived by the words, “I will not let this derail me,” his mother said. “His motto was ‘bravery, courage, strength and hope.’ He fought for almost four years.” This was a time when physicians basically were offering little hope or direction. Ricciardi researched online, found as many treatments for her son as possible. In the end, he was denied access to a clinical trial for

stem cell research because the disease had advanced too much. Ricciardi was angry, tried to push for his involvement. Patsy told her, “Mom, you know all these kids I’ve met? If I have to take a pass so they have a shot with this, then that’s what I have to do.” Ricciardi has carried on his inspiration, say those who’ve been drawn in by her passion. All those involved with Bingo are volunteers. Because the games support charities, those working at them cannot get paid or rewarded at all. Four regular volunteers travel bi-weekly to McHenry from Huntley to help. They all first met Ricciardi at another Bingo game she hosts Mondays at the American Legion in Huntley to raise money for her charity. They came as players, left as supporters. “You’ve got to know Marianne,” said Michelle Altmann, who volunteers with her husband, Mark. “You can just see it in her eyes what this means to her. It’s like a magnet. “You just want to do it. You see how passionate she is about this and the love she has for her son and how much she wants to do this for him.”

Not quite on their own Blended learning gives Huntley high students a level of independence By MEAGAN FLYNN editorial@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – When John Burkey was in high school 30 years ago, he thought the traditional method of having a teacher write on a chalkboard and students copy down information was flawed. “That’s part of the reason I got into education, because I did think there were better ways we could do things,” said Burkey, superintendent for Huntley District 158. Burkey and Anne Pasco have spent the past two years developing a new way to educate the district’s high school students. Called blended learning, it combines independent online assignments with traditional classroom instruction and testing. This school year, about 500 of the 2,393 students at Huntley High School are enrolled in 10 blended classes, said Pasco, the blended learning/educational technology department chairwoman at Huntley High School. The program will be expanded to 19 classes next year, and an estimated 1,300 students have requested a blended learning class. Burkey and Pasco said blended learning may be the best way to teach students born into a digital age – and they’re open to revisions as to how the program functions.

New model of learning District 158 is not alone in offering blended learning: In Illinois, a survey of 210 public high schools conducted in 2011 by Babson Survey Research Group found that nearly 23 percent had students enrolled in a blended learning course. But Burkey and Pasco aim to distinguish Huntley High School’s program. District 158 is designing its system – instead of buying the online content – based on a combination of existing models. District teachers, direct the online learning components. The costs for blended classes are no more than for traditional

Teacher Joe Soss walks around the classroom to help students with their work during a U.S. History class taught under the new blended learning system, engineered by Huntley High School and the school board. In a blended learning course, students are required to come to class only twice a week and much of the work is done online. classes, Burkey said. The program is designed to let students learn at their own pace. Online assignments must be completed before an assigned due date, and students must attend 47-minute classes twice a week. Those needing it can come to class five days a week for extra help. Pasco said the district is determining the benchmark students must meet to register for the class. This year, it was open to upperclassmen who wanted to experiment with a different learning environment. Blended learning classes were held during first- or eighth-period classes, so students could come late or leave early if not required to be in the classroom. With the program’s

expansion, there are hopes of building conference rooms and expanding the library.

Providing depth Pasco said the program was designed to encourage students to take ownership of their education, and to teach independence, time management skills and self-discipline. Some teachers are concerned that unless self-motivated, trusting high school students to discipline themselves is idealistic. “Too much with education we go on faith,” Spanish teacher Laura Devlin said. “You expect [honest hard work] from somebody getting their master’s degree because they’re an adult. You expect, as [fouryear college students] get into

their higher-level classes, they’re invested because of their intellect and their desire for learning.” Devlin wants to believe students take her Spanish class because they want to learn the language, but said kids take it because it’s required. Pasco said built-in safeguards prevent the system from falling victim to ideal expectations. One goal of blended learning is to prepare students for the next level, but it doesn’t expect total independence. “It is modeled after [college] with the safety net of high school,” Pasco said. “We will support teachers saying, ‘This is what’s good for this student – they need to be in here every day.’” Burkey said blended learn-

ing at Huntley High School will never be just online, noting that he thinks the student-teacher relationship is an important part of learning. Several students in Pasco’s AP U.S. History blended class said that since she can provide individual attention more often, the student-teacher relationship is improved. Junior Adam Urbanski said it took time but ultimately it was easy to adapt to a new teaching style and learning environment. Several students said they preferred the challenge of blended classes. “It gives you more freedom, and it makes you have to use your resources instead of relying on the teacher to give you information,” junior Michelle Caputi said.
