Kathie Michael of Batavia participated Saturday in a cleanup along the Fox River in Batavia sponsored by the Friends of the Fox River.
Keeping it clean along the Fox By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Kathie Michael shook her head with dismay Saturday morning as she picked up the cigarette butts and candy wrappers carelessy thrown along the shores of the Fox River. “People don’t know the dangerous effects of what their garbage can do to animals,” said Michael, who was participating in a spring cleanup sponsored by the Friends of the Fox River. “Two years ago, I found a dead baby duckling that was all wrapped up in plastic.”
Michael has helped with the cleanup for the last several years. “I love environmental issues,” she said. Michael was among those who took part in Saturday’s event, which included groups of families as well. Kelly Tryon of Geneva and his daughter, Riley, 13, were finding litter, including pop cans and plastic bigs. This is the second year they have participated in the cleanup for the Batavia Robotics Club. “We just want to clean the Earth,” Tryon said. During last year’s cleanup,
Riley pulled a trailer tire out of the Fox River. “It was pretty heavy,” she said. For Alan Magerkurth of Batavia, the cleanup was a family affair. Helping him was his wife, Christy, and their daughter, Nicole, 6. “I picked up things like bottles, cans and fishing lures,” he said. With sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s on Saturday, ideal weather conditions were in place for the cleanup. “It was a nice day for it,” Christy Magerkurth said.

Want to know what you can do to succeed at your next gardening project? Meagan Provencher of the Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles, and Joe Heidgen of the Shady Hill Gardens near Elburn offer some tips: n Don’t think it’s too late to plant. Did you run out of time to plant in May? No worries, said Provencher. “We plant from early spring to Christmas,” she said. “It can be done.” n Take the time to improve your soil. Heidgen recommended using compost, peat or other organic material to augment your dirt. He also recommended changing at least half of the soil in planting containers annually. “It can be boring, but it’s a lot of the determination in how it’s going to turn out,” he said. n Don’t overthink things. Don’t become too consumed with worry about pests or diseases. “I kill stuff all the time,” Provencher said. “Just take it and learn from it.” n Get dirty. There’s no substitute for getting down and working the soil. n Don’t be afraid to ask for help. “We’re here to answer your questions Jonathan Bilyk - jbilyk@shawmedia.com Customers buy plants and other gardening and landscaping materi- and help you achieve your goals,” Provencher said. als Sunday at Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles. Heidgen said many of his customers are turning to container gardening to grow plants that are relatively easy to grow and yet save space. Provencher said perennial gardening has also become increasingly popular, as some homeowners seek flowering plants that blossom year after
year. But others seem to have developed a flair for the exotic, Heidgen said, choosing more tropical varieties of plants that can survive in northern Illinois’ climate only in the summer. He said particularly popular plants include hibiscus, mandevilla and papyrus grass. The gardening center managers also noted that last year’s drought did not seem to discourage many people from planting again this year. Rather, they said, it may have produced better educated and more determined gardeners. “Things that survived the drought, and did well, have
He said many gardeners, for instance, learned last year that if they kept up with watering, the heat produced bumper crops of tomatoes, squash and other backyard fruits and vegetables. At the Wasco Nursery on Sunday, Brian Wiedenhoeft of Geneva said he intended to again plant annual red and white petunias this year along the front of his home, as he has for years. He said the planting marks his only foray into gardening each year. “It really makes the front of the house pop, you know?” Wiedenhoeft said. He said the petunias, while noticeably smaller, seemed to

Maureen and Ray Zmich of the Windings subdivision, west of St. Charles, said they were in the process of reclaiming a portion of their wooded lot that had become overrun with invasive weeds and shrubs. The work included clearing the invasive plants, creating trails with mulch and stone, and replanting other, more desirous flowers and other plants. “We were out all morning (Sunday),” Maureen said. “And we just ran out of plants.”

Meagan Provencher fields questions about plants year round. But around the middle of May, one question in particular sprouts constantly from a wide range of visitors to the Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles, where Provencher works as the senior landscape designer. “People want to know: Is it too late to plant?” Provencher said. “It’s the question I get more than any other this time of year. “And the answer is, there’s nothing that says to have your planting done by Mother’s Day or June 1 or any date. So many people believe it, but you can go all summer long.” As spring weather has warmed the air and the soil, it has also heated the desire of amateur home landscapers and gardeners to get outside and dig in the dirt. Managers at local garden centers, including Provencher at Wasco Nursery and Joe Heidgen, co-owner at Shady Hill Gardens in Elburn, said the month of May consistently ranks as the busiest time of the year for their greenhouses and nurseries. “When the weather gets warm like this, I don’t know how many people might come through here on a weekend day,” Provencher said. “Hundreds? St. Charles East’s Elizabeth Chmelik, Jordan Shead, Allison Chmelik and Britney Williams celebrate their first-place finish in the Class 3A 4x400-meter relay at the IHSA state track and field meet Saturday in Charleston.
East wins 4x400 3A state title; Rockets’ Trupp, Eagles also soar By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Elizabeth Chmelik, her sister, Allison, and Jordan Shead stood near the finish line and yelled words of encouragement toward Britney Williams, the final leg of the St. Charles East 4x400-meter relay. Williams was trying to hold on to a lead with Belleville West’s Ni’Jia McNamee coming up behind her in the final race of the day at the Class 3A girls track and field state meet. In a matter of seconds, the feeling of the four Saints went from nervousness to euphoria, with Williams crossing the finish line in 3:50.07, 12 hundreths of a second ahead of the Maroons. “It hasn’t’ really hit me yet,” Elizabeth Chmelik said after the race. “This is like the best day of my life. I’ve just kept imagining if this happened. I’m just so relieved. I’ve been so nervous this whole month leading up to state thinking of it.” East’s state title capped a solid weekend that saw the team finish eighth with 25 points. Lincoln-Way East won the 3A title with 79 points.
In the 4x400, Williams grabbed the baton with a solid lead, but felt McNamee coming up on her at the end. Williams wanted to keep her legs from tightening up and get through the finish line. “I was pretty confident, but you never know. Especially, some of those girls have fresh legs and I was kind of tired,” Williams said. “I just tried to hold on. I was just glad they got me that lead.” Shead and Williams also earned medals in the 400 dash, where Shead took fourth at 55.56 and Williams was seventh at 56.77. The Saints’ 4x800 relay of Torree Scull, Corrin Adams, Anastasia Honea and Krista Fitzmaurice took eighth at 9:23.63. Allison Chmelik was seventh in the triple jump (37-00¾). East’s 4x100 relay of Kimberly Abels, Monika Stoskute, Jess Glas and Lauren Towne was ninth at 50.10. Geneva’s Kathryn Adelman finished sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:17.94, and was the Vikings’ lone medalist. Kaneland had two medalists in Class 2A – the 4x800 relay of Amanda Lesak, Aislinn Lodwig, Jessica Kucera and Sydney Strang took ninth at 9:40.76, nearly
eight seconds ahead of 10th-place Bloomington Central Catholic, while freshman Brianna Bower took seventh in the 3,200 (11:19.33). Other area Class 2A medalists were Burlington Central’s Katie Trupp, who took second in the pole vault (12-00) and high jump (5-06). The Rockets’ Kayla Wolf was sixth in the 800 (2:15.29), while Aurora Central Catholic freshman Karina Liz was four spots ahead of her in second (2:13.93). In Class 1A, Aurora Christian took home a trophy, finishing third with 52 points. Mowequa Central A&M won with 60. The Eagles had seven medalists and four first-place finishers – Peyton Wade, who won both the high jump (5-7) and 100 hurdles (14.86), Taylor Knauf (pole vault, 12-1) and the 4x200 relay of Alyssa Andersen, Meghan Hagerty, Natasha Brown and Wade, which had a time of 1:43.51. The Eagles’ 4x100 relay of Andersen, Hagerty, Teresa Murray and Natasha Brown took second (49.71), while Brown took sixth in the 100 dash with a time of 12.87.
Sure, Batavia baseball would have loved to win the UEC River title outright, but it’s probably fitting that the Bulldogs and St. Charles East are going down as co-champs for the 2013 season. On one hand, Batavia has the better overall record and probably has been the more consistent team, all things considered, from the start to the end of the regular season, when you take nonconference performance into account. But East hasn’t been far behind, and the Saints beat the Bulldogs two out of three games when the teams played head-to-head, and that’s got to count for something. Give both teams credit for closing the regular season with sweeps under the pressure of the conference race, and both teams had to pull some tight games out of the fire to make it happen. Batavia was a surprise team this spring, so when the Bulldogs got off to a great start, some wondered if they might run out of gas at some points along the line. The answer: Nope. Strong to the finish. Winning a conference title is awesome, but both teams want to make sure they’re still celebrating next weekend, which would mean they won a regional championship. Sly likes both teams’ chances to do so, but then again, it’s baseball, and there are plenty of upsets in a one-and-done format. Quick transition to soccer: Congrats to Rosary and Batavia on their regional titles Friday night. When you look at the regionals results for the Tri-Cities teams (heck, Batavia, Geneva, East and North outscored their first-round opponents a combined 26-1), it’s easy to see why people look at the Tri-Cities as a soccer stronghold. That Hoffman Estates Sectional is going to have quite the Tri-Cities flavor next week ... should be a blast.
Tuesday The Chronicle previews this week’s baseball and softball postseasons beginning with classes 3A and 4A. Our baseball preview will focus on Kaneland baseball’s pitching staff being bolstered by John Hopkins’ return, while the softball preview will take a look at Rosary’s prospects in Class 3A.
Thursday Coverage of Wednesday night’s Geneva Boys Volleyball Regional championship game. If the seeds hold in the early rounds, Tri-Cities rivals Geneva and St. Charles North will be competing for the regional title.

The Geneva Vikings celebrate after defeating St. Charles East, 3-2, on penalty kicks during Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A Bartlett Regional championship.
Geneva gets kicks against East in regional final thriller By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com STREAMWOOD – At the end of a roller-coaster ride, riders typically feel either exhilarated or sick. At the end of the ride that was Saturday’s Class 3A Bartlett Regional girls soccer championship, a pair of Tri-Cities teams adopted those roles. Geneva players left Millennium Field exhilarated by their 3-2 victory on penalty kicks, while St. Charles East players left with a sick feeling in the pit of their stomachs, made worse by the knowledge they had beaten the Vikings twice in the regular season The Saints (14-6-2) shut out Geneva (14-8-1) in both those contests, but this time the Vikings got two goals from Molly Axen in the first 50 minutes to jump out to a 2-0 lead. “That was motivation,“ Geneva coach Megan Owens said of the early-season losses to East. “We’re not the same team we were. Like we talked about before the game, we play such a hard season to get us ready for this. We play tough teams that other teams don’t.” The Vikings served early notice they planned to dial up the offensive pressure this

time. Less than five minutes into the match, Amanda Lulek flicked a header to Axen for a breakaway scoring chance. Landry’s shot beat East keeper Kendra Sheehan, but banged off the right post. There were few good scoring opportunities for either team the rest of the half until Axen scored 1:54 before intermission after a good buildup by Megan Fitz and Courtney Lardas. “It was kind of a shock to me at first,” Axen said. “I was calling for the ball and my teammate, Courtney, she made a really good cross to me. We’ve been doing a lot of short corners in practice, so I just kind of flashed back to it and just finished it.”
Practicing corner kicks also helped on Axen’s second goal, which came just less than 10 minutes into the second half. The senior forward got a head on a corner by Lulek. “We always just say throw your body in there, be aggressive,” Axen said. “I saw the ball coming and just threw my head in there and got the goal.” The Saints responded to Axen’s second score with a furious comeback effort. Carly Pottle scored a breakaway goal off a long pass by Darcy Cunningham with 20:56 remaining on the clock and Cunningham scored the equalizer with 6:28 to play on a header in the box on a nice crossing pass from Shannon Rasmussen. With 49 seconds left in regulation, Geneva keeper Samantha Hauser made a nice save on a shot by Morgan Settle after the Vikings narrowly averted conceding an own goal. Hauser, who made nine saves in regulation and overtime, was just getting warmed up for penalty kicks, which decided the match after a pair of scoreless overtimes. The Saints scored on their first two penalty kicks, but Hauser then robbed Rasmussen with a sprawling save to her right.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips During that time I have witnessed lying, cheating, lechery, betrayal, vicious gossip, arrogance, entitlement, stealing and bullying, etc. Last week, a co-worker whom I liked and respected confided to me that she hopes a 102-year-old relative will die soon because she needs to inherit some money. I was floored and had a hard time keeping the shock off my face. Does work bring out the worst in people? Is it because we all must be here every day? Is it too many people competing for too few resources? Is my hide too thin? Am I in the wrong job? – The Daily Grind Dear Daily Grind: When you spend eight hours a day with people, they usually reveal their core values at some point. In your case, you appear to work with someone who “over-shares.” I don’t think your hide is too thin, and I’m not in a position to tell you if you’re in the wrong job. You may, however, be overdue for a vacation. P.S. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that relative makes it to 110. Dear Abby: Please settle a family disagreement. A scratch ticket is given to a friend or relative as a gift. If that ticket is a winner, is there an expectation that the winnings should be shared with the person who gave the ticket? – Jeff in Massachusetts Dear Jeff: A gift is a gift. There is no obligation to share. Alexander Pope wrote, “Hope springs eternal in the human breast,” but if you are hoping you’ll get a cut of the money, don’t hold your breath. • Write Dear Abby at www.dearabby.com.

Dear Abby: I have worked in the field of education for more than 40 years, with the last 25 years serving in adult education, helping students complete their high school equivalency diploma. BIG changes are impending worldwide in this very important educational service. Starting in 2014, the cost may go up. Up until two years ago, the classes in our community were free. The testing cost $7.50, which paid for a printed diploma. Since then, the cost has gone up – first to $25 and then to $35. Now the GED program has been bought by a for-profit organization and the costs will go higher than ever. Furthermore, it will no longer be possible to take the test using pencil and paper. It will all be done on computer. Please encourage the thousands of adults who do not have their high school degrees to make a life-changing decision for themselves and their families NOW! – Joy in a Classroom Down South Dear Joy: I am sure many readers will thank you for this important heads-up. Readers, the changes Joy has described will go into effect on Jan. 2, 2014. According to the media representative for the GED Testing Service in Washington, D.C., the costs of the tests will be determined by the state in which it is administered. It is currently between $0 and $250, and in 2014 will “marginally increase or decrease” according to which state you live in. Criteria for passing or failing the test will remain the same. Readers, any of you who are not computer literate should start now. Do not delay. If you are uncomfortable with technology and have a friend or relative who is knowledgeable, more information can be obtained by visiting www.gedtestingservice.com. Dear Abby: I have been in the workplace for 20 years.

Responder’s action with five in a major
CELEBRITY CIPHER
Last week we looked at the basic elements of Stayman, which looks for a 4-4 major-suit fit. But suppose responder has a five-card major. How does he hunt for a 5-3 fit? The best answer is to use transfers into the major suits. When opener immediately shows a balanced hand, if responder bids diamonds at the minimum level (two diamonds over one no-trump or three diamonds over two no-trump), it shows five or more hearts and at least zero points. If responder bids hearts at the minimum level, it indicates at least five spades and any point-count. This allows the stronger hand to become the declarer in the major and permits the auction to stop quickly when responder is weak. In this deal, if North-South were not using transfers, a response of three hearts would be natural and game-forcing. But when North first bids three diamonds, transfer, he can then pass three hearts when South completes the transfer. How should the play go in three hearts after West leads the club queen? South should see that he might lose five tricks: two hearts, two diamonds and one club. But he can eventually eliminate one loser on his third high spade. After winning with his club ace, declarer should cash the heart ace and play another heart. West wins, cashes a club, and shifts to a diamond. South wins and takes his three spade winners, discarding a diamond from the dummy. Then he claims.
