weigh between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds, according to The Nature Conservancy’s website. “We sell the offspring to keep from inbreeding,” Fermilab employee Mike Becker said. “So typically we sell calves and/or 1-year-olds in the fall. We like to maintain the herd at between 20 to 24 adults.” Becker said when the herd bulls reach 6 to 8 years old, they get larger than Fermilab’s equipment can handle. “So around that age, we sell them and bring in new,

younger herd bulls,” he said. Buffalo is the popular name often used to describe North American bison, but buffalo are distinctly different animals from bison. Although both bison and buffalo belong to the same family, Bovidae, true “buffalo” are native only to Africa and Asia, according to the website www.allaboutwildlife .com. One doesn’t have to be a Fermilab employee to see the bison up close. Fermilab is an open campus, and visitors are

encouraged to see the bison. Visitors, including families with young children, can enter the Fermilab site through its Pine Street entrance in Batavia or the Batavia Road entrance in Warrenville. Admission is free, but you will need a valid photo ID to enter the site. Summer hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. Berman likes the fact the bison at Fermilab get room to roam. Batavia School Board taking applications for vacancy By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Batavia School Board after the resignation of school board member Kathleen Roberts. Roberts, who has been on the board for 22 years, said she resigned because of

family matters. “I have a lot of family stuff going on,” Roberts said May 16. “I need to free up some time and mental real es- Kathleen Roberts tate.” Board members will vote Tuesday, June 25, on filling the vacancy. The

person will fill the spot until the election April 7, 2015. “I have no one in mind for the vacancy,” Roberts said. “I think with the newly elected board members, the district is in good hands.” Applicants for the vacancy should submit a letter of interest and a brief resume by 4 p.m. Friday, June 7, to board secretary Dr. Lisa Hichens via email

at superintendent@bps101.net or hand-delivered to the Rosalie Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia. Applicants need to be at least 18, a U.S. citizen and a registered voter who lives within the school district’s boundaries. Earlier this month, three Batavia School District 101 board members left the board

as three new members took their seats. Incumbent Tina Bleakley, who was appointed last year to the board, retained her seat in April’s election. Taking their seats were new board members Jason Stoops, Susan Locke and Jonathan Gaspar. Board members Ron Link, Jack Hinterlong and Joseph Purpura did not run for re-election.

was younger. “It’s not a zoo,” she said. “They have the ability to roam all around.” Fermilab procurement administrator Sandra Efstathiou said she likes the feel that the bison herd adds to Fermilab’s campus. “It gives a feeling you are out in nature, even though you’re doing this very intense scientific work,” she said. The person who helps take care of the bison is Cleo Garcia, senior groundskeeper at Fermilab. But he is sure to keep a safe distance from the herd, including when it comes to feeding them. A tractor is used to bring the food to troughs inside the bison pen. The bison also spend a lot of time grazing. “We try not to get much involved,” Garcia said. “They are wild. They kind of get stressed when you handle them.” And he is not that worried about any of the animals trying to escape. “Why would they try to escape?” Garcia asked. “They have everything here. They’ve got an area for grazing. They are happy.”

BATAVIA – Fermilab computing manager Eileen Berman has had the opportunity to look bison straight in the eye. And she didn’t need to travel far from her workplace to do it. Although Fermilab is known best for its high energy physics research, the laboratory also maintains a herd of bison. The bison are a popular attraction this time of year because of new calves being born. Fermilab started the spring with 22 animals, and seven calves recently were born, bringing the size of the herd to 29. “You don’t usually see animals that big outside of a zoo,” said Berman, who has worked at Fermilab for 28 years. “You can get a lot closer to them than you can normally.” So what are bison doing at a physics laboratory? Robert Wilson, Fermilab’s first director, brought the first American bison – a bull and four cows – to Fermilab in 1969. According to Fermilab officials, Wilson wanted to recognize and strengthen Fermilab’s connection to our prairie heritage. Today’s bison are descendants of those animals. The animals have become a hit with visitors to Fermilab’s campus, who can watch them roam on 80 acres of land. Bison are the heaviest land mammals in North America. Adult males stand as tall as 6 feet at the shoulders and

More discussion on tattoo parlors sought By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen will take a second look at whether new tattoo parlors should be prohibited from opening in the city’s downtown. Aldermen at the Batavia City Council meeting May 20 voted, 7-6, to send the issue back to committee for further discussion. They have been considering removing tattoo parlors

and piercing studios from the list of uses allowed in the downtown mixed-use district. Batavia 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit and 4th Ward Alderman Jamie Saam said prohibiting tatto parlors would further stigmatize tattoo parlors. They said tattoo parlors need to be sanitary and follow the proper regulations in order to stay in business. The proposed change would not affect the two tattoo parlors currently in downtown, which

would be grandfathered as a noncomforming use. Fallen Star Tattoo is on South Batavia Avenue, and Twizted Images recently moved from South Washington Street to East Wilson Street. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he was in favor of not permitting new tattoo parlors in the downtown, saying the city needed to maintain control of them. The city’s zoning code would continue to permit tattoo parlors elsewhere in the city, in both the community commercial and mixed-use zoning districts. Tattoo parlors are defined as those that apply permanent tattoos and not cosmetic tattoos. The Batavia Plan Commission previously voted, 5-1, to recommend removing tattoo parlors and piercing studios from the list of uses allowed in the downtown mixed-use district.

BATAVIA – Low-flying aircraft will sprinkle moth pheromones on much of Fermilab and some sections of Batavia in an attempt to combat the spread of a different kind of winged threat. Next month, contractors working with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Raleigh, N.C.-based Slow the Spread Foundation will continue the fight against the gypsy moth, bringing the struggle to Batavia and Fermilab. The work locally will involve contractors flying low over Fermilab, dropping small “pheromone flakes,” said Scott Schirmer, plant and pesticide specialist supervisor at the IDAG office in DeKalb. He said the flakes will be small pieces of PVC plastic that have been “impregnated” with female gypsy moth pheromones. Once spread over an area, the flakes have the effect of preventing the male gypsy moths from locating female moths with which to mate. “Basically, they make the whole place smell like a female gypsy moth,” Schirmer said. He said the flakes are nontoxic and can be easily wiped off any surface onto which they might fall. Schirmer said those looking on likely will not see anything falling out of the planes. “It’s not going to look like a spray,” he said. “The best way I can describe it is, it’s like

sprinkling a Dixie cup full of doughnut sprinkles from the air over a large piece of land. “The flakes are that effective.” The work is tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 24. Schirmer said the technique, coupled with targeted pesticide spraying for gypsy moth caterpillars in other areas, has proven “quite successful” at halting the spread of the moths, and even reclaiming some territory over which the moths had ranged. For decades, public agriculture and forestry officials have fought the spread of the moths, which are not native to North America, and have devastated trees in many areas in which they have spread. The moths have spread into 11 states thus far, including much of the upper Midwest. Slow the Spread is funded by the federal government.

Fermilab hopes to announce next director by July 1 By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermilab is moving closer to finding a new director. Earlier this month, the

16-member Fermilab director search committee submitted its final report to Robert Zimmer, chairman of the Fermi Research Alliance Board of Directors and president of the University of Chicago.

Fermilab director Pier Oddone will serve in his post until July 1 after announcing last summer he was retiring after leading the particle physics laboratory for the past eight years. As required in the search committee’s charge, the report contains an unranked list of at least three candidates to lead the laboratory, Fermilab

communication director Katie Yurkewicz said May 15. The committee was led by former Lockheed Martin chairman and CEO Norman Augustine. “I don’t know how many names the list has,” Yurkewicz said. “The process is confidential.” In early February, the committee had narrowed the list

of suggested names to about a dozen individuals. Zimmer will now review the report and make a recommendation. The U.S. Department of Energy, which operates Fermilab, must concur with the recommendation. “The goal is to announce the next director by July 1,” Yurkewicz said.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Park District’s Harold Hall Quarry Beach will open for the season on schedule on Saturday, June 1, despite being flooded out during heavy rains in April. “Fortunately, our sump pumps were working, and we were able to drain the rain water,” Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela said. Heavy rains filled Quarry Beach to within a foot of its capacity. Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former store quarry and features a sand bottom

“We have been able to get on track,” Niemela said. The park district also has been training lifeguards who will work at Quarry Beach during the upcoming season. “The park district takes great pride in training our guards,” Niemela said. How to submit

Norm retired after a long and rewarding career as an elementary school teacher and principal, mostly spent in Geneva, Illinois. He had a rare gift and love for teaching children and won several “Educator of the Year” awards. His co-workers said he combined warmth, artistry, enthusiasm, structure, flexibility, and humor to create a model teaching environment. Many of his former students kept in touch with him through the years, and fondly recall the positive effect he had on their lives. Norm was an avid fisherman, who fished almost every opportunity he could. He also excelled at basketball, playing his entire life and even winning several gold medals at the Florida Senior Olympics. Church and service to his community were very important to him. Through his church, Norm led youth groups, helped renovate housing for those in need, and continued to teach. He was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Belleview, Florida. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Belle; daughter, Lisa Muir (John), son,

Majors Junction to play in Geneva, Batavia By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com When they’re not raising their three children, with a fourth on the way, Mike Mulcahy and Heather O’Brien Mulcahy are rocking out on stage, singing and playing with their band, Majors Junction. The St. Charles couple will join the rest of their band mates on stage during Swedish Days in Geneva, and at a gig in Batavia on Friday, June 14. Mulcahy, who sings, plays guitar and writes songs, and O’Brien Mulcahy, who sings and plays some percussion, have been married for 13 years, and Majors Junction will celebrate its 11th year in October. Other band members include O’Brien Mulcahy’s sister, singer Kiley Ruggerio (who also is expecting a baby); drummer Colin Williams; lead guitarist Jim Croke; and upright bassist Ira Sussman. The group often features guests, such as piano players or violinists. Mulcahy and O’Brien Mulcahy describe the music stylings of Majors Junction as a combination of rock, blues, folk, bluegrass and Americana. “We’ve got three albums out, and we’re almost done with our fourth album,” Mulcahy said. “We’re hoping to have that out after our fourth child is born in September.” Majors Junction might be one of the only bands with two pregnant lead singers, Mulcahy said with a laugh. “It takes a village,” O’Brien Mulcahy said about performing in a band and raising a growing family. “We’re fortunate to have a really great support network of family, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles and, of course, the deep well of babysitters we’ve secured.” Mulcahy and O’Brien Mulcahy went to high school together in St. Charles, but didn’t start dating until they met up with one another while in college at an O’Brien Brothers concert, in which O’Brien Mulcahy’s father is a member. And it wasn’t until college that Mulcahy started playing guitar. “I sort of got a late start in music,” he said. “My parents encouraged me to take piano lessons, but I didn’t get started on guitar until my freshman year in college. My roommate had a guitar and taught me

He also started playing shows with the O’Brien Brothers. “Heather and I really started playing together in her dad’s band,” he said. “Since I always have a guitar in my hand and she’s a singer, it seemed like a natural fit.” O’Brien Mulcahy said she and her husband have different music stylings, as she was in a band in college and did theater all through school. But, she said, they’ve gotten used to working together over the years. During their shows, Majors Junction plays originals, as well as covers, such as songs by Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Mulcahy said at any given concert, Majors Junction may have a guest musician sitting in, or may feature acoustic songs in a three-piece trio. While they’ve played local festivals, such as Scarecrow Fest in St. Charles, this will be the first time Majors Junction will play at Swedish Days in Geneva. They’ll perform during the midday concert event, “Concerts on the Lawn,” which goes from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday during Swedish Days, which will be from Tuesday, June 18, through Sunday, June 23. In addition, the upcoming Batavia performance will be from 8:30 p.m. to midnight Friday, June 14, at O’Brien’s Pub and Grill, 12 N. River St., Batavia. For information about the band or upcoming shows, visit www.majors junction.com.

MYSTERY DINER

Batavia’s Open Range American Grill satisfies

KAN • Thursday, May 23, 2013 • The Republican

BATAVIA – If you’re planning to go to Open Range American Grill in downtown Batavia, you had better make sure you have a big appetite. The generous portions served at the restaurant, along with its comfortable atmosphere, make for a dining experience that I want to repeat again and again. Since it was a summer-like day, my co-worker and I decided to sit in the restaurant’s screened porch, giving us a chance to relax and enjoy a scenic view of Depot Pond and the Fox River Trail. We decided to start with the Borracho shrimp appetizer, which proved to be a good choice. My co-worker really enjoyed the flavors in the sauce that was drizzled on the shrimp. While she thought the shrimp were a bit chewy, she noted the shrimp were big in size. I liked the freshness of the shrimp, and that the sauce was flavorful, but not too spicy. Next up, I decided to try the Tumbleweed Burger. My eyes widened as the burger arrived, which was overflowing with a fried egg, applewood bacon, queso cheese sauce and onion tanglers. I could hardly get my mouth around this massive burger, but once I bit in, the tasty combination of the toppings brought a wide smile to my face. It’s a burger that will fill any appetite, and you will most likely be taking home leftovers, as I did. My co-worker opted for the San Diego fish tacos. She liked the delicious, crispy cod bites, pickled cabbage and flavorful chipotle sauce. Her appetite also was satisfied, especially after rounding out the meal with a good-sized portion of smoked baked beans. The menu at Open Range American Grill is expansive – barbecued ribs, crab cakes, enchiladas and pizza are among the other items on the

A day with ‘Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio’ Each year, as we swing into the baseball season, three things bring me to an outof-body, “Field Of Dreams” experience: having a couple of smokie-link sandwiches in the left field box seats at Wrigley facing the base that Santo built; throwing down a cold one while watching the post-home run fireworks at Comiskey (sorry, it will always be Comiskey); and recalling my day with a man who is spoken of in the same conversation as is Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig, Joe DiMaggio. For many years, I volunteered my time to The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame on Taylor Street in Chicago. I produced all its fundraising events, was the lead designer for all the exhibits in the museum and was editor of its magazine, Red White & Green. Because of this unique position, I was able to befriend some of the biggest names in sports history and become subject to classic behind-thegame stories. As we were constructing the museum’s new home in Chicago, we were able to secure from the city of Chicago the parcel of land directly across the street for $1. It was a real estate deal that would have brought even Donald Trump to tears. We designed the “Joe DiMaggio Piazza” complete with a beautiful bronze statue of the legend taking his signature swing, roman columns and Venetian tile. Basically, it looked like the backyard of many of my Italian-American cousins. By way of Morris Engelberg, his attorney, business manager and author of “DiMaggio: Setting The Record Straight,” we invited Mr. D to the groundbreaking ceremony. He accepted! I was selected to coordinate this day. Definitely one of the most exciting pinch-me moments of my career. Our first stop was at the Chicago Board of Trade, where Joe was to open the day of trading. We entered the vast trading floor where the electricity was high and the tension was as thick as Sunday lasagna. Then something happened that Board Chairman Pat Arbor

said had never occurred there before: business completely stopped, and the traders paid homage to the Yankee great with a thunderous applause as he walked the floor to the opening bell platform. All our eyes welled up at this heartwarming tribute. So, me being an event producer extraordinaire (at least I thought I was), I believed that every minute was well planned out. What I did not realize was that the ringing of the opening bell was just that, a quick action that equated to a three second endeavor. “Joe D” aptly clanged the large table-mounted bell (one that looked like the type you would see ending

the rounds in a boxing match) with a wooden baseball bat, received World Series-winning cheers from the floor then looked at me and asked, “What’s next?” I had assumed there was to be some ceremony connected with this historic moment. Some pomp and circumstance, some presentations … something! But that was it and all eyes were on me as to what the next move would be. The next thing I had planned was an 11:30 a.m. lunch! Now what do I do with Joe DiMaggio? I asked Chairman Arbor if I could sequester our small group in his office for a while to which he eagerly complied. Here’s the cool thing: For over an hour, a couple of us from The Italian American Sports Hall of Fame with USA Basketball Chairman and owner of the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks Jerry Colangelo and NASCAR champion Chip Ganassi listened in awe as legendary Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda and fellow Cooperstown inductee Joe DiMaggio traded quips and stories about Berra, Gherig, Mantle and a few other larger than life sports figures. The lack of Marilyn Monroe talk was conspicuous by its ab-

sence. Story after story, told in first person as the recounting of memories … what an amazing experience that was! It wound up being quite a day (and quite a night), one that I could describe in better detail if I had a dozen or so more pages here. The exquisite Joe DiMaggio Piazza took about a year to complete. Unfortunately, Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio, the “Yankee Clipper” passed away before the unveiling of the statue and the piazza. His brother, former Boston Red Sox great, the “Little Professor” Dom DiMaggio attended and graciously spoke on behalf of his brother: “How wonderful this tribute to my brother is here in Chicago, a place that he truly loved and where he had many close friends. And how fitting it is that this Joe DiMaggio Piazza is located on Taylor Street in Little Italy. A little known fact about the DiMaggio family: We spent most of our young lives in a home on Taylor Street in San Francisco’s Little Italy!” All five hundred of us in attendance simultaneously dropped our jaws. He was born in California, grew up in San Francisco, became a New York legend, and died in Florida.

But when it came to memorializing this legendary figure, it was the fans from Chicago who stepped up. To quote the song “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio” by Les Brown and his Band of Renown, “From coast to coast that’s all you’ll hear, Of Joe the one man show. He’s glorified the horsehide sphere, Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio.” Joe only autographed one baseball during his visit. Yes, it was a very cool gift to me from somebody whom I never thought I would meet. To add to the cool factor – a subsequent visit from another Yankee great, Yogi Berra, resulted in his signature on the famed DiMaggio ball. But the best part of it all? I was given the greatest gift of all. I was able to introduce my hero to his hero. My dad, the proud World War II veteran, escorted him that day. Two true America heroes.

Danny Seraphine, co-founder and original drummer for the band Chicago, will be part of the “The Heart and Soul of Chicago” tour, which comes Friday, May 31, to the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles. Eric Schelkopf: You will be performing with Bill Champlin at the show and of course, Bill also sings lead vocals on “Full Circle,” a song from California Transit Authority’s new CD, “Sacred Ground.” Is that extra special for you, to be working with him again? Danny Seraphine: It is. He came in and did a very heart rendering, really truthful interpretation of the song. He sings it beautifully. The whole reunion of Bill and I is really a good thing.

It’s a real positive thing in my life, and I believe it’s the same for him. I’m really proud of this record, and I believe that it will be around for the next 50 years, and people will think of it as a great record. ES: You call your group California Transit Authority. Do you see the group as an homage to Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago? DS: Totally. I’ve always loved the name Chicago Transit Authority.

This group is really cut from the same cloth as the original CTA. It’s a really, powerful, powerful machine. The original Chicago Transit Authority, in my opinion, is one of the best bands there ever was, and that includes The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. None of those bands could even stand with us as far as total singing, songwriting, musicianship, creativity. I would never say we’re better than The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, but we did things that they couldn’t even touch. And that’s just the truth of it. The new CTA is also a world-class band, and there aren’t many bands that can equal it. ES: What do you think made Chicago so good? DS: The great horn section, three really great vocalists, and the strong rhythm section. A lot of people think my drumming was very groundbreaking. I can’t judge that. That’s for other people to say. You had all those elements that were really strong. We

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Danny Seraphine as one of the top 100 drummers of all time. Seraphine, co-founder and original drummer for the band Chicago, will be part of the “The Heart and Soul of Chicago” tour, which comes Friday, May 31, to the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. Seraphine will perform with his band California Transit Authority, whose sound recalls the horn-blasted sound of the Chicago Transit Authority, which became simply Chicago. Also on the bill are former Chicago singer and songwriter Bill Champlin, Dennis Tufano, original singer of The Buckinghams, and Chicago tribute band 25 or 6 to 4 – The Chicago Experience. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets start at $39, available at www.oshows.com or by calling 630-962-7000. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk with Seraphine about the upcoming show.

received a lot of criticism, especially once we became commercially successful, but that happens to everybody. There was no weak point in the band. Once we lost Terry [Kath], it was very tough. He was one of the greatest guitar players that ever walked the planet. Losing him left a huge void in the band. ES: I know that “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked as one of the top 100 drummers of all time. How do you feel about that and who influenced you in your drumming style? DS: It’s a great source of pride, obviously. I had great influences and I also had great teachers. My very first influence was Gene Krupa, a fellow Chicagoan. His style had so much flair. That is always prevalent and obvious in my style. There is a very strong R&B undertone in my drumming, and that’s from growing up in Chicago, and listening to all the R&B bands. The thing I do best, I think, is that I fuse jazz and rock together seamlessly. It just comes to me very easily. It just rolls off naturally.

SPORTS&REC Geneva bests Batavia in soccer sectional match By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com HOFFMAN ESTATES – Geneva junior Maggie Bodine had a grand total of zero goals on the season entering the May 21 IHSA Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional semifinal against Batavia. Then again, Bodine hadn’t really been in position to show her offensive skill level. Coach Megan Owens’ late-season move of Bodine from defense to outside midfielder pocketed Bodine a pair of first half goals as Geneva owned the early stages of its 4-2 win against Batavia. Owens called Bodine “kind of [our] utility player.” “Sometimes when you’re in the back or you’re in charge of man-marking somebody you don’t always get the attention or the accolades that you deserve,” Owens said. “It was her time to shine today. We’re real happy for her.” Geneva advances to the Friday, May 24, sectional championship match against St. Charles North, which ousted the Vikings in a sectional semifinal last season. While Bodine’s newfound goal-scoring prowess was

Geneva led, 3-0, at halftime, and matters could have been even worse for Batavia. Senior Amanda Lulek scored the Vikings’ first goal, and nearly had two more as she hit the post once, and Batavia defender Emily Stanczak made an emergency clear on another Lulek would-be score. Reality was discouraging

enough for the third-seeded Bulldogs, who saw Bodine deposit the seventh-seeded Vikings’ second and third goals before halftime. Her finish of a crisp passing sequence involving Lulek and Molly Axen made it 3-0 Geneva with 5:53 left in the first half. That picturesque goal underscored how far the Vikings have come offensively. “It was just so pretty and there was just so much teamwork involved,” Owens said. “Just a lot of people playing

selfless and playing smart and finding the open player. Our offense has really come a long way and made a lot of strides. Now we’ve got a lot more offensive threats.” The Vikings played arguably their most impressive soccer of the season in the first half, for which Bodine offered a simple explanation. “Just teamwork,” Bodine said. “We knew how they played, and so we knew we had to get it to the outside and just get keep passing the ball. We have speed up top so we just kept hitting it over them and running onto it.” Any notion of a Bulldogs uprising in the second half was dispelled 17 seconds in to the half when Axen’s header eluded Bulldogs goalkeeper Jenny Welday for a 4-0 Vikings lead. The win was the ninth in a row for Geneva (15-8-1), which won in decidedly more nerve-racking fashion than in Saturday’s regional final, a penalty-kick shootout triumph over St. Charles East. Batavia (13-5-3) scored a pair of goals less than three minutes apart in the second half as Anna Zeyen and Lexi Slome injected life into the

match. But by then, Geneva only had to preserve its lead for the final 11:30 to close the deal. The Bulldogs tied Geneva, 1-all, during the regular season, but were unable to replicate that performance. “They were more assertive in the 18-yard box, and we just struggled with that, especially in the first 10 minutes,” said Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco, whose personnel choices were partially dictated by some players missing practice Monday because of the school’s “senior ditch day.” Geneva will now take aim at its third straight Tri-Cities rival of the postseason. The sectional final berth is the Vikings’ first since Owens’ debut season at Geneva five years ago. “We were given the 7 seed, and now we’ve knocked off the 2 and the 3 seed,” Owens said. “I think my kids, you know, it’s the postseason, but also they were playing a little bit for respect. They’re just playing real well. “We got everybody in the game in a sectional semifinal, which is pretty tough to do. It was just a good team victory.”
