said. “It’s also important to be in an environment where you are surrounded by a lot of other artists. You get inspired.” Music also is an integral
part of this year’s show. Wisconsin-based The Stellanovas - comprised of huband and wife duo Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines - brought their

Olympians give tips to STC swim team members By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Standing in front of about 80 members of the St. Charles Swim Team Sunday morning, two-time Olympic silver medalist Christine Magnuson told them she started from similar beginnings. “Your coaches are probably better than mine growing up,” the Tinley Park native said. Magnuson and fellow Olympian Adam Brown gave the young athletes tips in and out of the pool during a clinic at the St. Charles East High School campus. They worked with about 120 swimmers in a younger age group on Saturday. Swim team co-head coach Jon Cabel said kids need to hear about sacrifices, struggles and goals, so it’s great
when they get a chance to learn from an athlete who has excelled on some level, even if the athlete participates in another sport. Magnuson, who earned her medals at the Beijing Olympics, and Brown, who represented Great Britain in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics, said they enjoy leading such clinics. “It reminds you where you came from,” Magnuson said between taking pictures with the teens. “I came from a program just like theirs.” Brown said he loves to help and inspire the next generation of swimmers and to give back to the sport. Although he and Magnuson are Olympians, he said, they don’t do anything special or out of the ordinary. They simply try to perfect the basics, he said, adding he
feels joy when he sees kids focus on what he’s trying to teach them. “They inspire us to work harder in our own training,” Magnuson said. Fifteen-year-old Johnny Tarpey of St. Charles and 17-year-old Taylor Falk of Batavia said they appreciated the opportunity to learn new techniques. “It’s always the little things that can change your stroke,” Falk said. Before entering the pool at the Norris Recreation Center, the young swimmers met the Olympians in East’s gym. Magnuson and Brown shared their paths to the Olympics and answered questions, which addressed superstitions, eating habits and, among other topics, overcoming disappointment. Magnuson said failure can
be very hard if winning is your only goal. For her, she said, earning medals is not the endgame. “I do it because I love the
sport,” she said. Brown offered similar advice. He told the swimmers not to put too much pressure on themselves to perform.

ST. CHARLES – Sue Peterson of Batavia was attracting her share of onlookers Saturday as she sat behind a jack loom, getting ready to make a tea towel. “I love weaving,” said Peterson, board president for the Fine Line Creative Arts Center, as she pushed the colored yard through the loom. “It’s exciting starting with thread and making cloth.” Peterson and other Fine Line volunteers were giving demonstrations at the 15th annual St. Charles Fine Art Show, which took place Saturday and Sunday on Riverside Avenue in downtown St. Charles. Shawn Barbagallo, of Rockford-based Raku Gold Pottery, also attracted attention as he went about making a vase. He started working with clay at a young age. “It’s relaxing,” he said. “When you are working on a wheel, you block everything else out.” For Geneva colored pencil artist Andria Burchett, the show presented an opportu-

Kaneland 4x800 relay makes up for lost time and wins title Class 3A
By TROY HAYES editorial@kcchronicle.com CHARLESTON – A bad handoff usually spells doom for a track and field relay team. Do it at the IHSA Boys State Track and Field championships and you can usually forget any sort of perch on the multilevel medal stand. You’ll be lucky to be on the medal stand at all. That didn’t bother Kaneland’s 4x800-meter relay team of Conor Johnson, Kyle Carter, Luis Acosta and Nathaniel Kucera at Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A state championships. In fact, it seemed to invigorate them. Johnson’s passing of the baton to Carter was flubbed after Johnson had to evade falling bodies in the transfer area. No worries, though. Carter, who had to completely stop to get the baton, just turned in one of his all-time splits. “I don’t know, really, how I did it,” Carter said. “I guess the adrenaline and knowing that you have to make that time up really pumped me up.” Carter handed off to Acosta with no trouble, Acosta ran a great split as well and then it was up to the anchor, Kucera, to hold off any threats. He did, winning by more than a second over second-place Normal University. “We expected this all year. Coach has been telling us all season if we just do what we can do, and do things right, we’ll be good,” Kucera said. “He was right.” Things didn’t go quite as planned for Kucera in the open 400. Rain shortened the day, forcing officials to snap events off one after another instead of allotting a certain amount of time for rest between races. It flustered Kucera. “I just wasn’t ready for the individual 400,” he said. “I didn’t really feel tired but … .” He finished ninth in the open 400, an event he had

The Knights ran a 7:50.26 to win the event. qualified fifth in, just a tenth of a second off the third fastest time. But that saved kick came in handy in the 1,600 relay. Kucera said there was talk of dropping him completely from the metric mile event, but instead, they switched up Dylan Nauert to Kucera’s anchor. Kucera then ran a wicked third leg to get the Knights the lead. Nauert couldn’t hold off the kick of East St. Louis’ Marcus Greer, but no one probably could have. “That was an impressive finish for that kid from East St. Louis,” Carter said. “Just impressive.” Still, the Knights finish in sixth place as a team, and just a few points out of fourth. “We did pretty well,” said Johnson, who started off both
relays for the Knights. “We had a lot of kids qualify and it was close to being a perfect Saturday for us in the relays. That’s pretty hard to beat.” Kaneland’s Tanner Andrews was sixth in the triple jump (44 feet, 1½) and Nate Dyer was ninth in the shot put (51-10), while Kory Harner (pole vault) and Marshall Farthing (high jump) both qualified but did not place. Aurora Central Catholic’s Patrick Lefevre was fifth in the 110 hurdles (14.97) and Matt Meyers finished seventh in the 1,600 (4:24.95). Burlington Central’s Ryan Olsen was oh-so-close in the 400, finishing just .09 behind winner Marlin Brady of Cahokia at 49.39. Lucas Ege was fourth in the 300 hurdles at 39.22.
Marmion Academy’s Kevin Grahovec thought he had a chance to win the Class 3A 800 Saturday. He had qualified ninth Friday but felt his kick was a little late and he could have been higher. Boxed in a huge pack Saturday, he couldn’t find room to make a move until late in the race. “I couldn’t get anything going because there were guys all around me,” he said. “That’s just a testament to how many really good runners there were.” Still, Grahovec’s time of 1:54.77 is right at his fastest, and that speed bodes well for the junior’s future. ”I improved tremendously this spring,” he said. “We have a new coach and he has been trying a lot of new things. It’s worked.” The Cadets’ Jake Ruddy finished ninth in the long jump, but that’s just icing on the cake. Ruddy broke both wrists after falling awkwardly while dunking a basketball in gym class. His doctor reluctantly released him last week to begin jumping. Still wearing a cast on one arm, Ruddy popped a qualifying mark on his first attempt at sectionals – the first time he’d jumped in competition this year – taking all the pressure off. “That was big for me,” he said. “It was surprising.” His jump during qualifying of 22-4¾ carried over as his best at Charleston. “It was awesome just to get here,” he said. “Jumping just seven times this year, I couldn’t have asked for more. This is a pretty good gig right now.” Tyler Maryanski qualified in the high jump but did not place. St. Charles North’s Erik Miller was fourth in the high jump, clearing 6-8. Batavia’s R.J. Viereckl did not place in the pole vault, while Geneva’s Tim Guthrie was seventh in the pole vault, clearing 14-9.
COACH SLY’S CORNER Coach Sly’s used to seeing big-time success around the area in sports like soccer, softball, baseball and track and field. This spring, the Tri-Cities area is adding some new feathers in its collective spring cap. Sly’s not sure the last time boys volleyball attracted this much attention in late May around these parts, but the answer is probably never. St. Charles East and St. Charles North both made it to sectionals, and the North Stars are still kicking. Even Geneva was pretty respectable for a newer program, making it to a regional final. Congrats to coach Todd Weimer and the North Stars, who are handling the pressure of being the sectional’s No. 1 seed like cool customers. We’ll see how far the fellas can keep it going. And let’s not forget about boys tennis, another sport that is increasing its stature this Memorial Day weekend. Jasper Koenen did some big-time work at the state tournament, beating some big-time players from fancy-schmancy schools (yes, fancier-schmancier than St. Charles) along the way. Making it to the final day of the state tournament is a sensational achievement. Witness: Graduated Batavia star Josh Cogan was an absolute machine, and he never turned the trick during his stellar four-year career. This ain’t like most other sports in Illinois where there’s somewhere between 3 and a zillion classes. This is one class, people, meaning Jasper is indisputably one of the very best boys tennis players in the whole state. Last thought for now, give it up to Aurora Central Catholic for its school year. After the Chargers football team broke its long playoff drought, the baseball and softball teams have both come out of nowhere to make significant postseason runs in the spring. Way to be, ACC.
Wednesday Coverage of Tuesday’s IHSA Class 3A Barrington Supersectional match between the St. Charles North girls soccer team and the host Fillies. The same teams met in the supersectional last season, won by the North Stars, 1-0. The winner advances to the state semifinals Friday at North Central College in Naperville.

St. Charles East relief pitcher Troy Dyhkuis (right) is congratulated after the Saints 5-2 victory over Geneva in Saturday’s IHSA Class 4A regional championship at Geneva High School.
By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva might have had home-field advantage, but that hardly was a daunting prospect for the St. Charles East baseball team. The Saints continue to make themselves at home in Geneva on Saturdays in late May, winning their third regional championship game against the Vikings on Geneva’s home field during the past four years, and their fourth straight regional overall. On Saturday, it was a 5-2 Saints win, advancing East to a home 4A sectional semifinal Wednesday against Lake Park. “We like this place to win regional titles,” East coach Len Asquini said. “We like our place, too. Now, we get to go home for a sectional, and that was obviously a big goal for us, to play at least one of those games on our field for the sectional. We’re happy for that and excited about it.” The sixth-seeded Vikings scored in the top of the first for 1-0 lead when Bobby Hess reached base on a dropped third strike before eventually scoring on an errant East throw. But the fourth-seeded Saints took the lead for good in the bottom of the first, scoring three
runs against Geneva starter Tony Landi (5-2). “We’re not real happy about how they scored their first run, but that happens,” Asquini said. “It didn’t rattle us, we got the outs after that, and then the really great thing was offensively we came back and put the three runs on the board right away.” A Brian Sobieski sacrifice fly and a Brannon Barry RBI single accounted for the final two runs in East’s three-run inning. The Saints tacked on single runs in the third and fifth innings, with Barry in the middle of both instances. In the third, with the bases loaded, Barry attempted to squeeze bunt Joe Hoscheit home, but did not make contact. The ball scooted past Geneva catcher Nate Montgomery to score Hoscheit, with Geneva coach Matt Hahn arguing that it should have been a foul tip. With East (24-11) leading, 4-1, in the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings intentionally walked Sobieski for the second time, loading the bases with one out. Newly inserted Geneva pitcher Max Novak walked Barry to force home the Saints’ fifth run before keeping East off the board the rest of the game.
The Vikings had a couple of decent scoring chances against East left-hander Nick Huskisson in the middle innings but were unable to muster a needed, two-out hit. “The curveball was working pretty well for me in some key counts,” Huskisson said. “I was able to throw it over, and luckily they struggled with it a little bit today.” Huskisson (6-1) pitched five innings of one-run ball before giving way to Troy Dykhuis, who allowed an RBI single to Bobby Hess in the seventh inning but shut the door with consecutive outs to end the game. In addition to his solid pitching outing, Huskisson was productive offensively, laying down a sacrifice bunt and adding a single and double. Huskisson said he didn’t expect to bat cleanup this year after a modest offensive history. “Going in, no,” Huskisson said. “I hit 5 sometimes last year and I didn’t even get to hit a whole lot when I [was pitching]. Luckily coach had enough confidence to put me in the lineup this year, and I took advantage of some chances. He sees me in the 4-hole, so I go out there and take the same approach and try to get it done for my team.”

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips she will be dying soon. I try to tell her not to think that way. I really love her and don’t know what I would do if she were gone so soon. I go to her house every summer, winter, and anytime we’re out of school. I need to get a job this summer, and I don’t know how to tell my me-maw I won’t be coming to visit without hurting her feelings. She is one of those people who don’t show their emotions like most of my family, so I know when she sometimes says it’s OK it really isn’t. Please tell me what to say to her. – Concerned Grandchild In Alabama
Dear Concerned Grandchild: You are sweet, thoughtful and sensitive, but you are also growing up. Your grandmother may be talking the way she is because of her age – or she may be concerned about her health and trying to prepare you. It’s time to ask your parents what is going on with her. If she’s really sick, you may want to postpone getting that job until next summer. If she’s not, you should explain to Me-maw that you love her and treasure the special times you have been able to spend with her – but as much as you’d like to, you will not be able to do it this summer because you need to get a job. It’s part of becoming an adult and will help you to learn responsibility and independence. As a loving grandparent, she knows how important that is for you. • Write Dear Abby at www.dearabby.com.

The Argyle Sweater
Dear Abby: To all of you who are observing Memorial Day with me, please join in reflecting for a moment on those members of our armed forces who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. Bless their spirits, and may they live forever in our hearts. Dear Abby: My wife revealed on my 60th birthday two days ago that she has $10,000 in cash hidden in our house. She said she secretly took the money from my pay and consulting checks and hid it when we were going through a bad period in our marriage 10 years ago and nearly divorced. I told her there is no rational reason for keeping that much money in the house. She says she’s keeping it for an emergency, and it makes her feel secure. When I said we should invest the money, she got upset. I can’t understand why anyone would want to keep that much cash in the house. What’s your view? – Living In “Fort Knox” Dear Living: To understand your wife’s motivation, look back 10 years to the time when she may have felt she’d need the money to get a new start. That’s the “emergency” the money was salted away for. I agree that $10,000 is a lot of cash to keep in the house. Most of it should be in the bank, with only a portion in the house so it will be immediately available if needed. Unless your wife feels your marriage is still shaky, I can’t see why she wouldn’t compromise. Could that be her reason? Dear Abby: I am a 15-year-old girl with a good life. There are bumps in the road, but they happen and I accept that. The thing I worry about is my me-maw. She’s getting very old and thinks

How to describe major two-suiters
SOLUTION
CELEBRITY CIPHER
Two weeks ago, we looked at Stayman sequences. Last week, we turned to transfers into the majors. This week, let’s cover how to show the range of major two-suiters opposite a one-notrump opening. Let’s start with one no-trump – two clubs (Stayman) – two diamonds (no four-card major) – two of a major. In pre-transfer days, a two-heart or two-spade rebid showed a five- or six-card suit and game-invitational values. Using major-suit transfers, Stayman followed by a two-heart rebid indicates a weak major two-suiter, in principle 5-5 (as was noted in the column on May 16). In contrast, rebidding two spades shows five spades, four hearts and game-invitational values – see South’s hand in today’s diagram. North, with such good major-suit holdings, raises to four spades. How should South plan the play after West leads the club king? The South hand has four potential losers: one spade, two hearts and one club. There are two ways to get home. First, win with dummy’s club ace and play three rounds of hearts. Then, when back in his hand, declarer ruffs his last heart on the board. Alternatively, South can play a dummy reversal. Suppose he ducks (loses) the first trick, and West shifts to a trump. Declarer finesses, East taking his king and returning a spade. South wins on the board, cashes the club ace, ruffs the last club, unblocks his top diamonds, and uses dummy’s two heart entries to get two diamond ruffs. Declarer takes two spades, two hearts, two diamonds, one club and those three ruffs. Yes, an initial trump lead is fatal, but that is hard for West to find.
