ST. CHARLES – Batavia resident Irene Aranda stood along West Main Street on Monday morning with her young niece, nephew and son, watching the annual St. Charles Memorial Day parade come to a close.

This was the youngsters’ first Memorial Day parade, Aranda said. With many veterans in her family, she said, she hoped to give the next generation a head start in developing American pride.

“It will be a nice little memory for them,” Aranda said.

The St. Charles Memorial Day parade featured 32 entries, including high school marching bands, Boy and Girl Scout troops, veterans and members of the City Council.

It was among several activities, including a flag raising and memorial ceremony, the city had planned for the holiday.

Despite the gray skies and threat of rain, people gathered along both sides of Main Street.

they attend the Memorial Day event because they are thankful of the servicemen and women and want to pay tribute to those who sacrificed so much for them.

Wendy Mosier – who toured the beaches of Normandy, France, a couple of years ago – said seeing the D-Day site in person really made her appreciate what those veterans did.

“It’s not the same on TV,” the St. Charles resident said, watching the parade with her husband, Fred, and their standard poodle, Kobe.

Girl to compete in national spelling bee Elgin Academy eighth-grader attributes her knack for spelling to love of reading

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Piper Winkler has spent the last few months studying more words than she can count.

She set aside hours each day to pour over lists containing thousands of words and looking up their meanings in the dictionary as she has prepared to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee this week.

“She’s our family dictionary,” said her mother, Michele Winkler.

Piper, 14, a student at Elgin Academy, won the Kane County Spelling Bee in March, qualifying her to go on to nationals. She’s one of 281 spellers competing this year.

For the first time in the spelling bee’s 86-year history, competitors will be tested on their vocabulary knowledge as well.

To prepare for that portion of the test, Piper has been keeping a notebook filled with words, and next to each word, she’s been writing out a one-word definition. She said

studying word parts, such as anti- and dis-, has helped a lot.

Michele Winkler, who sat in on a webinar about the rule changes, said she was told competitors will listen to words, type them out and will then be asked to define the word.

“I think it’s better because they teach you how to use the words,” Piper said. “I don’t think it’s hard.”

Today is the first day of the three-day competition. Competitors participate in a preliminary round by taking a computer-based test. Rounds two and three of preliminaries continue Wednesday, as do computer-based semifinals. Thursday marks the last round of semifinals and is topped off with championship finals.

Piper said she’s a little nervous about competing, but it’s not from stage fright. She said a lot of people have supported her along the way, including her family members and those at her school, and she said she wants to show them that she really cares about the competition.

“I really do love spelling, and I love words and I love reading, so I guess another component of that is that I really want to show myself that I know these words,” she said.

She partly attributes her knack for spelling to reading – her favorite authors include Jane Austen and Shakespeare. She said she often looks up words she doesn’t know while she reads, which has helped expand her vocabulary.

Piper said she learned some Spanish early on and also taught herself some Latin and knows some French, which she said has helped a lot while studying. Spellers are given lists of words from different countries, and Piper said the Latin and Greek lists are among the longest.

When she’s not studying words, Piper takes piano lessons and practices taekwondo. Piper said if she wins the $30,000 cash prize, it will likely go toward her college fund.

She said she loves music and is interested in studying neuroscience, and she said she’d be interested in studying the

effects of music on the brain.

She said linguistics have always interested her as well.

Her family will be cheering her on during the spelling bee in Washington, D.C., and Michele Winkler said she thinks she’s just as nervous about the competition as her daughter. “[It’s] just like a little bit of a nail-biter because you’re so happy for them and how hard they worked,” she said.

“We’re very proud, though.

Olympians give tips to STC swim team

arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Standing in front of about 80 members of the St. Charles Swim Team on Sunday morning, twotime Olympic silver medalist Christine Magnuson told them she started from similar beginnings.

“Your coaches are probably better than mine growing up,” the Tinley Park native said.

Magnuson and fellow Olympian Adam Brown gave the young athletes tips in and out of the pool during a clinic at the St. Charles East High School campus.

They worked with about 120 swimmers in a younger age group Saturday.

Swim team co-head coach Jon Cabel said kids need to hear about sacrifices, struggles and goals, so it’s great when they get a chance to learn from an athlete who has excelled on some level, even if the athlete participates in another sport.

Magnuson, who earned her medals at the Beijing Olympics, and Brown, who represented Great Britain in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics, said they enjoy leading

Before entering the pool at the Norris Recreation Center, the young swimmers met the Olympians in East’s gym. Magnuson and Brown shared their paths to the Olympics and answered questions, which addressed superstitions, eating habits and – among other topics – overcoming disappointment.

Magnuson said failure can be very hard if winning is your only goal. For her, she said, earning medals is not the endgame.

“I do it because I love the sport,” she said.

Brown offered similar advice. He told the swimmers not to put too much pressure on themselves to perform.

“Swimming’s all about having fun,” he said.

Artists show off their craft during St. Charles show

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Sue Peterson of Batavia was attracting her share of onlookers Saturday as she sat behind a jack loom, getting ready to make a tea towel.

“I love weaving,” said Peterson, board president for the Fine Line Creative Arts Center, as she pushed colored yarn through the loom. “It’s exciting starting with thread and making cloth.”

Peterson and other Fine Line volunteers were giving demonstrations at the 15th annual St. Charles Fine Art Show in downtown St. Charles, which took place Saturday and Sunday.

Shawn Barbagallo, of Rockford-based Raku Gold Pottery, also attracted attention as he made a vase.

He started working with

“It’s relaxing,” he said.

“When you are working on a wheel, you block everything else out.”

For Geneva colored pencil artist Andria Burchett, the show presented her with an opportunity to show her work and be with other artists.

“If you’re an artist, you have to show your work,” she said. “It’s also important to be in an environment where you are surrounded by a lot of other artists. You get inspired.”

Music also was an integral part of this year’s show.

Wisconsin-based The Stellanovas – comprised of husband-and-wife duo Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines – brought their cafe jazz to the River Rockhouse patio.

“We play a lot of art festivals,” Wagoner said. “It’s a good fit.”

The Scouts move forward THE WASHINGTON POST The Boy Scouts of America isn’t just about basket weaving and old-fashioned uniforms. It encourages young men to take charge – of themselves and others. And it builds character, the sort that comes from cooperating with, competing against and rendering service to those around you. For these reasons and more, the BSA is an important thread in America’s national fabric, and it is a good thing that the organization boasts more than 100,000 troops across the country, in which more than a million adult leaders serve more than 2.7 million boys.

After last Thursday, that membership could rise. A large majority of the BSA’s National Council approved a resolution that would allow openly gay boys to join the organization. Since the policy change still bars openly gay adults from serving as leaders or volunteers, it is only a waystation to the broader reform that is inevitable. But less discrimination is still good news, and you’d think that it would encourage more boys to participate.

Instead, though, the BSA’s membership may very well fall — perhaps significantly.

Religious groups sponsor about 70 percent of troops, and some of their leaders seem ready to rip this priceless civic institution apart. For the good of the country’s young men, they should resist the urge.

Though it has a mixed history on gay and lesbian equality, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a major Scouting sponsor, immediately embraced the policy change. “As in the past, the

Church will work with BSA to harmonize what Scouting has to offer with the varying needs of our young men,” Mormon leaders said in a press release.

Because the church’s organization is highly centralized, that means a very large number of troops will remain active.

Not all big religious sponsors have been as encouraging. Catholic clergy have said mixed things about whether their parishes would continue sponsoring troops. The National Catholic Committee on Scouting, which serves as an advisory group for the BSA on Catholic matters, said that “we hope to maintain that relationship,” and that the group will “study” the new policy’s effects before it phases in at the end of this year.

Some Southern Baptist leaders have been more negative. “Frankly, I can’t imagine a Southern Baptist pastor who would continue to allow his church to sponsor a Boy Scout troop under these new rules,” Richard Land, the Southern Baptist Convention’s chief ethicist, told the Baptist Press. “I predict there will be a mass exodus of Southern Baptists.” Even before the vote, discussions of alternative youth groups to the Boy Scouts popped up in the press, Christian and otherwise.

It’s difficult to imagine another group that could do as much good for as many boys as the Scouts have. We have no doubt that even Scouts and parents of Scouts who disagree with the group’s step forward will still be able to find a morally enriching experience within the Boy Scouts of America. Before they withdraw, they should try.

Structure honors Bakers’ son, vets

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Melvin Peterson joined the Baker Memorial Community Center Board in 1943 because, as he remembers Edward Baker saying, “We need somebody young on the board.”

Seventy years later, Peterson, 92, continues to serve on the board and acts as the 87-year-old building’s historian.

Sitting in the Women’s Club Room last week before the board’s annual meeting, Peterson spoke of the building’s history, which he documented in a five-page summary that took him about a year to write in the mid-1990s.

“The building needs publicity because it’s important for the public,” Peterson said.

The Henry Rockwell Baker Memorial Community Center, 101 S. Second St., St. Charles, was named after Edward Baker and Harriet Rockwell Baker’s son Henry, who died in 1914 at age 23 because of football injuries that developed into tuberculosis, according to Peterson’s research.

In addition to serving as a living memorial to the Bakers’ son, the three-story building also honors World War I veterans, whose names are displayed on a bronze plate near the entrance.

It formally opened May 1, 1926.

“At the time of its dedication, the center was called ‘a center for wholesome recreations, social opportunity, and the promotion of all that makes for a noble character and upright, active citizenship,’ ” according to Peterson’s summary.

The community center has been used by theater groups, the American Legion and, among others, youth organizations, Peterson wrote.

“Your new residents have no idea this building was basically the beginning of the Chamber of Commerce,” Peterson said.

The community center

also has undergone various improvements, remodeling, repairs and redecorating, Peterson wrote. The basement once included bowling alleys and a 20-by-60-foot swimming pool, he wrote. He also noted mechanical issues closed the pool in the 1940s, and the alleys were removed before the completion of a youth center in the 1960s.

Now, current users include the St. Charles Park District, a church, a square dancing group and a senior bridge club, Peterson said.

Rooms are available to rent. The Baker Community Center receives its funding from room rentals, as well as from donations, investment interest and a trust established by Baker.

A copy of Peterson’s written history of the community center is available at the center, the St. Charles Public Library and St. Charles Heritage Center, he said.

• A resident of the 6N700 block of Kevin Court, Campton Hills, reported Monday, May 20, that someone had stolen four lawn chairs valued at $40 and a lifesize deer target of unknown value from his backyard in March. He reported the thefts after learning his neighbor also had lawn furniture stolen.

Gage marshals North’s midfield attack

Alex Gage said she used to be picked on when she was a little girl, part of the reason she became deeply intrigued by taekwondo as she grew up.

“I was kind of the small kid and smart, kind of kept to myself,” Gage said. “So the pretty kind of girls picked on me a little bit, but it’s OK.” From third grade to freshman year, the standout St. Charles North girls soccer midfielder immersed herself in taekwondo, earning a black belt and building ample self-confidence along the way.

Since then, she’s blossomed into one of the premier soccer players in the area, and will help lead the North Stars in their bid for a second straight IHSA Class 3A state semifinal berth in tonight’s Barrington Supersectional match against the host Fillies.

“I did it for a long time,” Gage said. “I studied the language, I almost went to Korea for a little while, I did a lot of sparring and a lot of tournaments and stuff. It was really cool.”

Gage said she arrived at a juncture in which it came down to choosing between taekwondo or soccer so she could fully commit herself, and she opted for soccer, citing her love for the sport and opportunities for a college scholarship.

Aside from knowing how to stand up for herself, Gage said there are lingering benefits from her martial arts training that apply to soccer.

Building tremendous leg strength, endurance and an appreciation for respecting the game and opponents are all soccer virtues that Gage traces back to her years of taekwondo.

Gage will play college soccer next year at Loyola, where she will be a teammate

of her big sister, Sam, a former standout for the North Stars. Sam Gage – who also studied taekwondo, albeit for a much shorter time – will be a junior for the Ramblers next season.

“I am so excited because she’s my best friend,” Gage said. “It’ll be really fun to play together.”

First, Gage intends to play three more matches with the North Stars, the final two of which would be Friday and Saturday at North Central College in Naperville.

For that to happen, North will need to defeat Barrington on its home field in a supersectional for the second straight season. The North Stars topped the Fillies last year, 1-0.

“I think what’s really special about our team is we have a lot of girls who have been there, and experience is so important,” Gage said.

“When you get into these really [pressure] games, people get really excited and nervous, and I think we’ll be more calm and ready.”

JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Baseball players can be a superstitious lot, so when designated hitter Dan Vogelbach had three hits including a home run Monday afternoon for the Kane County Cougars wearing jersey No. 23 instead of his usual No. 3, it was reasonable to ask if he might consider a permanent uniform number change.

“Nah, I just wore it today,” Vogelbach chuckled. “I don’t plan on switching.”

The Cougars (24-25) might wanttokeepwearingthepatriotic red, white, and blue uniforms they wore in honor of Memorial Day after a rare late-inning rally made them 8-4 winners over Beloit at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Vogelbach’s two-run homer onto the right field patio capped a five-run eighth-inning rally for the Cougars that wiped

out a 4-3 deficit.

“The past couple games, I’ve just been trying to slow everything down,” Vogelbach said. “Sometimes, I get too fast, try to do too much with things, so I’ve just been slowing it down and the past few series I’ve been seeing the ball really well. I try not to worry about the home runs. They’re going to come. I just try to hit good pitches, hit them hard, and today I was able to lift one out.”

The rally began with muchless potent, but equally effective hitting by the Cougars off Beloit reliever Andres Avila (0-1). Marco Hernandez got things started with a bunt single and Gioskar Amaya followed with a broken-bat infield single to short. Yaniel Cabezas advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Hernandez scored the tying run on Oliver Zapata’s grounder to second when catcher Nick Rickles

could not hang on to his tag attempt. The home plate umpire initially called Hernandez out.

Pin-Chieh Chen delivered the game-winning hit, a tworun single to left, in advance of Vogelbach’s big fly.

“We got fortunate,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “Amaya did a great job on that hit-and-run and Cabezas got the bunt down, which was huge. Chen came up there and was aggressive, which is what we’ve been trying to get him to be all year.”

Chen is hitting .238 with 13 RBIs on the season. His hit made a winner out of Steve Perakslis (1-2), who threw three solid innings in relief of Michael Heesch.

“Perakslis did a [heck] of a job,” Johnson said. “He really picked us up big time.”

Heesch struggled through the first six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. The

third inning, when the Snappers (29-21) scored a pair of runs, was particularly rocky, though Heesch really wasn’t to blame for the first one. Rickles opened the frame with a line drive that was misjudged by Albert Almora in center field. Almora initially broke in on the ball, then stumbled trying to reverse directions and go back.

Rickles wound up with a triple and Almora left the game at the end of the half inning with what Johnson described as a strain in his left hamstring.

“He’s got a little tight hammy,” Johnson said. “A real high tweak if you will. He didn’t really pull it.”

Johnson said the Cougars would see how Almora felt today when the team opens a short, three-day road trip to the Quad Cities, but suggested the Cubs’ 2012 first-round draft choice might take a day or two off.

St. Bede halts ACC softball’s surprising run

DeKALB – Aurora Central Catholic softball coach Jim Hallahan joked that he is going to level a complaint against Jugs, the company that produces the pitching machines teams commonly use for batting practice.

“They need to invent a machine that throws a riseball so we can practice against that,” Hallahan said. “We spent the last two days practicing 60 mph pitches, just putting the ball in play, just leaving your hips at home and putting the ball in play. What you can’t teach them is how to lay off that high stuff.”

The riseball showcased by Peru St. Bede pitching ace Lainie Schweickert took too long for the Chargers to get a handle on Monday as ACC’s early offensive woes turned in to a 6-1 loss to the Bruins in the IHSA Class 2A Northern Illinois University Supersectional.

The Chargers’ unexpectedly prolonged postseason push ended one game shy of East Peoria as ACC closed its season with a 13-14 record.

“We needed to go to state to get to .500 ball,” Hallahan said.

“Isn’t that something?”

Schweickert threw a one-hitter against the Chargers, whose lone hit was a one-out, solo home run down the left field line by freshman pitcher Paige Miller in the top of the sixth to draw ACC within 5-1.

Miller will be the centerpiece of a promising core of Chargers returnees that hopes to build off the momentum of the first sectional title in program history.

“It’s still shocking, but then we came together at the end, so then it wasn’t as shocking,” Miller said. “Maybe from the regular season, yeah, because we were making lots of errors, but then we came along in the beginning of regionals, coming out strong.”

Schweickert struck out 14 batters on the afternoon, including 10 among the first 12 outs she recorded. St. Bede’s offense, meanwhile, posted a four-spot in the bottom of the first inning to give their Lewis University-bound right-hander substantial breathing room.

Still, the Chargers made matters interesting in the top of the sixth. After Miller’s homer – her first of the season, although the Chargers have pitcher-friendly outfield dimensions at their home field, Hallahan noted – left fielder Jami Dahl walked, and third baseman Gabi Alfaro reached on an error, eventually giving the Chargers runners at second and third with one out.

But Schweickert retired the next two Chargers to keep ACC at arm’s length, and St. Bede (24-5) added a final, insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

ACC would have been in worse shape if not for a strong defensive showing, especially by Alfaro at third base and shortstop Clare Tack, who started an inning-ending, double play by snaring a low liner in the bottom of the fourth.

Bruins coach Bill Prokup’s team will play a 2A state semifinal Friday in East Peoria against the winner of today’s Athens Supersectional.

“I’m a dad, too, on this team – you can’t describe the feeling of seeing these kids as freshmen and sophomores, and how happy and excited they were today,” Prokup said. “It’s a feeling you can’t replace. We’ll go get a trophy, and hopefully it’s the one that has a 1 on it.”

With Schweickert and her 200-plus strikeouts on the season leading the way, the Chargers saw first-hand why that’s a realistic possibility.

“She comes at you hard, and looks like she’s standing right in your face when she releases the ball,” Hallahan said.

he said. “That’s just a testament to how many really good runners there were.”

Still, Grahovec’s time of 1:54.77 is right at his fastest, and that speed bodes well for the junior’s future. ”I improved tremendously this spring,” he said. “We have a new coach and he has been trying a lot of new things. It’s worked.”

The Cadets’ Jake Ruddy finished ninth in the long jump, but that’s just icing on the cake. Ruddy broke both wrists after falling awkwardly while dunking a basketball in gym class. His doctor reluctantly released him last week to begin jumping. Still wearing a cast on one arm, Ruddy popped a qualifying mark on his first attempt at sectionals – the first time he’d jumped in competition this year – taking all the pressure off.

“That was big for me,” he said. “It was surprising.”

His jump during qualifying of 22-4¾ carried over as his best at Charleston.

“It was awesome just to get here,” he said. “Jumping just seven times this year, I couldn’t have asked for more. This is a pretty good gig right now.”

Tyler Maryanski qualified in the high jump but did not place.

St. Charles North’s Erik Miller was fourth in the high jump, clearing 6-8.

Batavia’s R.J. Viereckl did not place in the pole vault, while Geneva’s Tim Guthrie was seventh in the pole vault, clearing 14-9.

By TROY HAYES editorial@kcchronicle.com CHARLESTON – A bad handoff usually spells doom for a track and field relay team. Do it at the IHSA Boys State Track and Field championships and you can usually forget any sort of perch on the multilevel medal stand.

You’ll be lucky to be on the medal stand at all.

That didn’t bother Kaneland’s 4x800-meter relay team of Conor Johnson, Kyle Carter, Luis Acosta and Nathaniel Kucera at Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A state championships. In fact, it seemed to invigorate them.

Johnson’s passing of the baton to Carter was flubbed after Johnson had to evade falling bodies in the transfer area. No worries, though. Carter, who had to completely stop to get the baton, just turned in one of his all-time best splits.

“I don’t know, really, how I did it,” Carter said. “I guess the adrenaline and knowing that you have to make that time up really pumped me up.”

Carter handed off to Acosta with no trouble, Acosta ran a great split as well and then it was up to the anchor, Kucera, to hold off any threats. He did, winning by more than a second over second-place Normal University.

“We expected this all year. Coach has been telling us all season if we just do what we can do, and do things right, we’ll be good,” Kucera said. “He was right.”

Things didn’t go quite as planned for Kucera in the open 400. Rain shortened the day, forcing officials to snap off events one after another instead of allotting a certain amount of time for rest between races. It flustered Kucera.

“I just wasn’t ready for the individual 400,” he said. “I didn’t really feel tired but … .”

He finished ninth in the open 400, an event he had qualified fifth in, just a tenth of a second off the third fastest time.

But that saved kick came in handy in the 4x400 relay. Kucera said there was talk of dropping him completely from the metric mile event, but instead, they switched up Dylan Nauert to Kucera’s anchor. Kucera then ran a wicked third leg to get the Knights the lead. Nauert couldn’t hold off the kick of East St. Louis’ Marcus Greer, but no one probably could have.

“That was an impressive finish for that kid from East St. Louis,” Carter said. “Just impressive.”

Still, the Knights finish in sixth place as a team, and just five points

“We did pretty well,” said Johnson, who started off both relays for the Knights. “We had a lot of kids qualify and it was close to being a perfect Saturday for us in the relays. That’s pretty hard to beat.”

Kaneland’s Tanner Andrews was sixth in the triple jump (44 feet, 1 ½) and Nate Dyer was ninth in the shot put (51-10), while Kory Harner (pole vault) and Marshall Farthing (high jump) both qualified but did not place.

Aurora Central Catholic’s Patrick Lefevre was fifth in the 110 hurdles (14.97) and Matt Meyers finished seventh in the 1,600 (4:24.95).

Burlington Central’s Ryan Olsen was oh-so-close in the 400, finishing just .09 behind winner Marlin Brady of Cahokia at 49.39. Lucas Ege was fourth in the 300 hurdles at 39.22.

Class 3A Marmion Academy’s Kevin Grahovec thought he had a chance to win the Class 3A 800 on Saturday. He had qualified ninth Friday but felt his kick was a little late and he could have been higher. Boxed in a huge pack Saturday, he couldn’t find room to make a move until late in the race.

“I couldn’t get anything going because there were guys all around me,”

Aurora Christian’s Jake Gehman was second int he 800 (1:56.79), while the 800 relay team of Gehman, Josh Schein, Grant Schweisthal and Johnathan Harrell was fifth at 1:31.47, as was the 4x400 relay team of Gehman, Aidan Flanagan, Schweisthal and Harrell. The Eagles’ Jonah Walker was seventh in the discus at 147-10. Josh Schein qualified for the pole vault but did not place.

Meanwhile, Mooseheart’s Wal Khat ran the 800 meters faster than he ever had Saturday in the IHSA Class 1A track finals – and it earned the Mooseheart junior a second-place finish.

Then Khat returned to the track in rainy Charleston an hour later and finished eighth in the 1,600 meters, providing a successful finish to his first state meet experience.

“It’s good,” Khat said. “I know everyone’s working hard to get a good place. I didn’t make it, but I have another year.”

AURORA – The Rosary softball team surprised Kaneland in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A Rosary Regional championship game, collecting a 7-0 lead through six innings.

The Knights finally awakened in the bottom of the seventh inning, rallying for six runs, but fell short, dropping a heartbreaking 7-6 decision.

Kaneland finishes 23-4 while Rosary improved to 13-18 ahead of Wednesday’s Rochelle Sectional semifinal against Marengo.

“This bunch of girls showed a lot of character because if you go down swinging and battle to the end you have nothing to be ashamed of,” Kaneland coach Brian Willis said. “It’s the epitome of these girls, especially the seniors. They never quit. We gave them a 7-0 lead

but fought until the last out.”

Rosary showed off its bats in the early going. The Royals scored a run in the second and added two in the fourth, one coming on a solo home run from Sam Phelps. They delivered their biggest blow in the fifth inning when Lauren Murray connected on a three-run home run.

“I told the girls that if you play solid defense you can stay in games, and now we’re hitting,” Rosary coach John Kazmierczak said. “It’s been a tough spring but we’ve kept battling.”

The teams met recently for a doubleheader, and the Knights swept the Royals, outscoring them 25-9 on a day where the teams combined for 52 hits.

The Knights were able to collect their fair share of hits in this contest, but couldn’t plate anything until the seventh inning.

East baseball back to party-crashing ways

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva might have had home-field advantage, but that hardly was a daunting prospect for the St. Charles East baseball team.

The Saints continue to make themselves at home in Geneva on Saturdays in late May, winning their third regional championship game against the Vikings on Geneva’s home field during the past four years, and their fourth straight regional overall.

On Saturday, it was a 5-2 Saints win, advancing East to a home 4A sectional semifinal Wednesday against Lake Park.

“We like this place to win regional titles,” East coach Len Asquini said. “We like our place, too. Now, we get to go home for a sectional, and that was obviously a big goal for us, to play at least one of those games on our field for the sectional. We’re happy for that and excited about it.”

The sixth-seeded Vikings scored in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead, when Bobby Hess reached base on a dropped third strike before eventually scoring on an errant East throw.

But the fourth-seeded Saints took the lead for good in the bottom of the first, scoring three

runs against Geneva starter Tony Landi (5-2).

“We’re not real happy about how they scored their first run, but that happens,” Asquini said. “It didn’t rattle us, we got the outs after that, and then the really great thing was offensively we came back and put the three runs on the board right away.”

A Brian Sobieski sacrifice fly and a Brannon Barry RBI single accounted for the final two runs in East’s three-run inning.

The Saints tacked on single runs in the third and fifth innings, with Barry in the middle of both instances.

In the third, with the bases loaded, Barry attempted to squeeze bunt Joe Hoscheit home, but did not make contact. The ball scooted past Geneva catcher Nate Montgomery to score Hoscheit, with Geneva coach Matt Hahn arguing that it should have been a foul tip.

With East (24-11) leading, 4-1, in the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings intentionally walked Sobieski for the second time, loading the bases with one out.

Newly inserted Geneva pitcher Max Novak walked Barry to force home the Saints’ fifth run before keeping East off the board the rest of the game.

The Vikings had a couple of decent scoring chances against East left-hander Nick Huskisson in the middle innings but were unable to muster a needed, two-out hit.

“The curveball was working pretty well for me in some key counts,” Huskisson said. “I was able to throw it over, and luckily they struggled with it a little bit [Saturday].”

Huskisson (6-1) pitched five innings of one-run ball before giving way to Troy Dykhuis, who allowed an RBI single to Bobby Hess in the seventh inning but shut the door with consecutive outs to end the game.

In addition to his solid pitching outing, Huskisson was productive offensively, laying down a sacrifice bunt and adding a single and double.

Huskisson said he didn’t expect to bat cleanup this year after a modest offensive history.

“Going in, no,” Huskisson said. “I hit 5 sometimes last year and I didn’t even get to hit a whole lot when I [was pitching]. Luckily, coach had enough confidence to put me in the lineup this year, and I took advantage of some chances. He sees me in the 4-hole, so I go out there and take the same approach and try to get it done for my team.”

GLEN ELLYN – It’s been a long time coming for St. Charles East softball.

But, as the pattern has gone so far this postseason, the Saints are a patient team.

Top-seeded East used more late-inning heroics to overcome a feisty Conant squad to defeat the Cougars, 4-1, in the championship game of the IHSA Class 4A Glenbard West Regional on Saturday morning.

It was the first regional title for Saints coach Kelly Horan and the first for the program since the 2002 season.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team and this group of young women who represent our school the way they have,” Horan said. “They play with heart, they play with class and they absolutely deserve the win they got here today.”

East (29-5) found itself in 1-0 hole right at the start as Saints pitcher Haley Beno gave up a two-out home run in the first inning, but the Saints were able to tie the score in the third when Olivia Lorenzini delivered an RBI single to left field, allowing Olivia Cheatham, who reached on a single, to score.

East’s offense then went silent and the Saints left six runners on base leading up to the sixth inning.

After Katie Kolb led off the sixth with a lineout to the second baseman, East’s offense came alive for three crucial runs.

Kate Peterburs connected for a double to left field and came around to score in what ended being the winning run on Sarah Collalti’s double to center.

Loss reinforces ‘fragile’ nature of postseason for St. Charles North softball: There was a slight delay before the postgame handshakes that followed Saturday’s regional championship game between St. Charles North and South Elgin.

The North Stars were forced to wait and watch as

South Elgin celebrated an IHSA Class 4A regional championship just behind second base on the North Stars’ home field.

For St. Charles North, the celebration served as a reminder of the 2-1, upset defeat they just experienced and a look into what the future might hold for this team.

North’s season came to an end Saturday, but already the North Stars – a team that didn’t have a single senior and expects to return everyone a year from now – were looking ahead.

“Next year, we’re really just going to come out stronger,” junior pitcher Sabrina Rabin said. “We know how this feels, and we don’t want it to happen again.”

BASEBALL St. Francis baseball edges Kaneland in regional final: The Kaneland baseball program has earned many honors over the years, including an IHSA Class 3A state title in 2011, but has never won a regional championship on its own field.

The Knights had hoped to change that Saturday when they hosted St. Francis in an IHSA Class 3A regional title game.

The Spartans, with a 3-2 “come-from-behind” win, spoiled Kanland’s attempt to finally win a trophy on their own diamond. St. Francis, the top seed in the Kaneland Regional, advances to the Sycamore Sectional and will face Burlington Central in a Wednesday semifinal.

The Spartans (21-11) won the game in spite of a dominant effort by Kaneland pitcher John Hopkins. The senior right-hander, who took the loss, faced the minimum number of batters in five of the six innings he pitched.

“John pitched a heck of game, I couldn’t ask anything more of him,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said.

It is said that Louis Comfort Tiffany’s famous lily lamp with glass shades for light bulbs was the first lamp with a shade that projected light down, not up, like a candle flame. Other lamps of the early 1900s were adapted to accept bulbs by removing the older light source, like a candle, then wiring the lamp for electricity and adding a bulb and shade. Others were made in entirely new shapes.

During the Art Nouveau period, sensuous women with curves were part of the designs used for glass, ceramics, bronze figurines and even furniture. So it is not surprising that a variety of lamps designed to feature women also were made. The Loetz glass factory (1840-1940), in what is now the Czech Republic, made art glass. At around the turn of the 20th century, workers there designed a figural lamp with a bronze base shaped like a woman holding an iridescent gold glass shade above her head. The glass resembled Tiffany’s, but it was actually made at the Loetz factory. It was signed by Peter Tereszczuk (18751963), a well-known Ukrainian sculptor who made bronze figurines and other decorative bronzes. Bell collectors prize his bronze electric call buttons that look like a small child on a rocky base. The lamp sold for $3,750 at a Rago Arts and Auction sale in 2013. *** Q: My old gate-leg table has a label that says it was made by the John D. Raab Chair Co. The finish on the table is a bit worn and marred.

I have been considering refinishing or painting it, although I think this would decrease its value. What do you think?

A: The John D. Raab Chair Co. was in business in Grand Rapids, Mich.,

from 1906 to 1924, when it was taken over by the Furniture Shops of Grand Rapids. If you like the table and plan to use it, go ahead and refinish or paint it. “Brown furniture” pieces like your table are not selling for much money today, and many people are buying them at bargain prices, then refinishing or painting them to either use or resell.

Pottery was out of business by about 1933. *** Q: We own an Art Nouveau vase signed “Val St. Lambert.” It’s 16 1/2 inches high. Can you tell us something about it, including what it’s worth?

*** Q: I would like information on a metal toy roller coaster that was given to my son in the early 1970s.

It was made by J. Chein & Co., of Burlington, N.J. It’s about 20 inches long, and has two cars propelled by an elastic band wound by a key. A ticket booth, hot-dog stand, cotton candy stand and children are pictured around the sides. Is it valuable or collectible?

A: Julius Chein immigrated from Russia in 1893 and opened his toy company in New York City in 1903.

The company moved to Burlington in 1949. The roller coaster was one of several amusement park toys made

by Chein. It was designed by modelmaker Eugene Bosch in 1949 and was made until the late 1960s. The lithographed pictures around the base were changed several times, and different colors were used. A 1950s version pictures a sideshow.

Chein stopped making toys in the 1970s. The company was sold in 1987, became Atlantic Cheinco and filed for bankruptcy in 1992. The sideshow version from the 1950s sells for $150 to $400. Your version with a hot-dog stand is less than $100. *** Q: I would like to know something about the maker of a platter that has been in my family for years.

It’s marked “Greenwood China, made for P, JB and Sons, Hotel Department,” and “Greenwood China, Trenton, N.J.” is impressed on the back. Can you tell me how old this is?

This lamp, created from a figure of a bronze woman and an iridescent gold glass shade made by Loetz, is 14 inches high. The signed lamp sold this spring for $3,750 at Rago Arts and Auction Center in Lambertville, N.J. It must be used with a low-wattage electric bulb because the glass lampshade would be damaged by too much heat.

A: Greenwood Pottery was founded in 1868. It began marking pieces “Greenwood China” in 1886.

During the early 1900s, Greenwood Pottery and Greenwood China were listed at separate addresses in Trenton, although they were under the same management. Dinnerware, hotel ware, restaurant ware and other items were made. Hotel china was marked with the letter “P” underneath “Greenwood China.” The pottery also made porcelain marked “Greenwood Art Pottery.” The art pottery ewers and vases can sell for more than $1,000 each. People like to believe that children are like Teflon, strong, resilient and able to withstand misfortune with minimal discomfort. But the truth is that they’re more like a sponge, soaking up everything, including any discernible animosity between their parents.

Henry James knew this and made it the subject of one of his most prescient novels, “What Maisie Knew,” a wrenching tale about a 6-year-old girl being used as a pawn and a weapon of mass destruction in her mother and father’s bitter divorce case.

James wrote the novel in 1897, but its relevance to today’s world of overworked, self-obsessed parents is downright eerie.

It’s as if James knew what the future held. I’m just surprised it took this long for filmmakers, like the directing team of Scott McGehee and David Siegel (“The Deep End”), to get around to adapting it into a movie. No matter, because now it’s here – and it’s spectacular.

Working with a script

by Carroll Cartwright and Nancy Doyne, the directors – and their sterling cast led by Julianne Moore – have fashioned a riveting tale that looks at divorce through a child’s jaundiced eye. And what that child sees is wrenching.

Much of that depth of feeling is due to an amazing performance by newcomer Onata Aprile, an 8-year-old with the acting chops of an actress four times her age. Her dialogue is sparse, which means the vast majority of her performance is communicated through Onata’s vividly

As Maisie, Onata appears in just about every scene, never once stumbling into the deathtrap of sentimentality. It’s a raw and telling performance full of truth and incredible heartbreak.

As her bitter, vindictive parents, Moore and the vastly underrated Steve Coogan become so petty you begin to question who are the adults and who are the children. Both parents make it clear that they love Maisie, but they love themselves just a tad more.

And for them, love is truly a battlefield in which both Beale (Coogan), a globetrotting art dealer, and Susanna (Moore), a fast-fading rock star, move Maisie back and forth like a chess piece, bouncing her from one Manhattan apartment to another while each parent busily tries to pit her against the other.

When Beale eventually marries Maisie’s young Scottish nanny, Margo

(Joanna Vanderham in a stunning debut), your gut tells you he’s only doing it to spite Susanna, the woman who hired her. Not to be topped, Susanna gets hitched to the first young stud she sees in Alexander Skarsgard’s hunky bartender, Lincoln.

The twist in both James’ novel and in the screenplay is that Margo and Lincoln prove to be far fitter parental figures than Maisie’s biological mom and dad, who repeatedly “dump” her on their vastly younger blue-collar spouses. If there’s a message in there about class, and how rich folks are somehow less caring than poorer ones, it’s almost undetectable. The more pertinent message is that careers and child rearing don’t often mix. It’s a solid point made well, but what keeps you invested is Onata and the intense chemistry she shares with her adult costars.

While Moore and Coogan

wield the name recognition, both are pretty much supporting players, popping in and out of Maisie’s life like heads in a game of Whacka-Mole. The movie really belongs to Vanderham and Skarsgard (“True Blood”), as their unjaded characters warmly discover they have a real knack for parenting and each other.

It’s a joyous feeling enhanced by Giles Nuttgens’ gorgeous cinematography, which takes full advantage of Manhattan’s most appealing attractions, from Central Park to SoHo. The brightest glow, though, emanates from Onata, whose dazzling smile and precocious charm effortlessly make “What Maisie Knew” well worth knowing.

Dear Abby: I own a business with just two employees, my husband and a very old friend. The friend has been in the business for 15 years, and he is critical to running it.

My husband has been with me for 11 years, but in the business for only three. He is not critical to running the business.

Their relationship is a constant strain. Neither one likes the other, but they generally tolerate each other. When tensions arise they become emotional, and I end up caught between them, unable to put an end to it.

How do we work and live in peace? Their conflict is affecting the smooth functioning of the business. What should I do to end the hostility? Dear Abby: A friend, “Wanda,” invited my husband, “Hugh,” and me to a dinner party two years ago.

Hugh had too much to drink and insulted not only Wanda but also one of the guests. He apologized the next day.

This is not the first time he has done this at dinner parties, and his behavior has had a negative impact on some of my best friendships. I used to entertain all the time, but I can no longer invite my friends over as they no

longer want to be around Hugh.

Wanda continues to invite me to her dinner parties, but has made a point of telling me that Hugh is NOT invited.

Not wanting to lose another friend, I have been going alone.

I let my husband know why, and he says it doesn’t bother him, but I feel guilty attending without him.

Folate is essential for healthy cell function Dear Doctor K: I’m a healthy woman in my 40s. Should I take extra folic acid to boost my immune system?

Dear Reader: Folic acid is, essentially, a vitamin. We all need vitamins. Indeed, the word “vitamin” was coined to refer to a substance that was essential to human life. The natural form of folic acid, folate, occurs in some foods, including vegetables, fruits, and dried beans and peas.

Each of us is a collection of about 13 trillion cells. If our cells get sick, we get sick. If our cells get old, we get old. Folate is essential for the production and maintenance of our cells.

That’s especially true during rapid periods of growth, such as pregnancy and infancy. Folate is needed to make DNA and RNA, the genetic material that dictates how our cells function, and it helps prevent mutations to DNA that may lead to diseases, including cancer.

Our immune system cells, which are white blood cells, are always in a rapid period of growth. These cells don’t live very long, so they constantly need to be replaced. Folate deficiency can cause anemia – inad-

Over the past 30 years, many studies have found that people with high blood levels of a natural substance called homocysteine are at higher risk for heart disease. One easy way to reduce homocysteine levels is by taking folic acid supplements.

Studies have not shown that taking folic acid supplements protects most people from heart disease. The exception is people born with a genetic defect that causes high homocysteine levels. I’m one of them; I take folic acid every day.

For most healthy adults, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of folate is 400 micrograms (mcg) a day.

Pregnant women should take more: 600 mcg a day. The extra folate helps to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, a serious malformation of the spine,

skull or brain in the baby.

Experts advise against getting more than 1,000 mcg per day of folic acid from supplements or fortified foods. You’re unlikely to suffer any ill effects even if you exceed that limit, because your body excretes excess folic acid in the urine.

Still, there might be long-term health effects that we don’t yet know about.

On the other hand, there’s no health risk associated with getting plenty of naturally occurring folate from foods. Get as much of your daily requirement as you can from a healthy diet. Good food sources of folate include spinach, asparagus, rice, green peas, broccoli and great northern beans. Many breads, cereals, flours, cornmeal, pastas, rice and other grains are enriched with folic acid.

If you’re not getting enough folate from foods, take a multivitamin that contains 400 mcg of folic acid.

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to comment to the girl who was constantly being beaten by her boyfriend but couldn’t break up with him because she “loved” him.

I, too, loved Ken. In fact, we were engaged to be married after high school. He was a senior, and I was a junior. One night when we were out, we got into an argument, and he got so upset that he punched me and gave me a black eye. He cried real tears and promised he would never do it again. Well, he never kept his promise. He hit me time after time, and it continued to get worse.

Naturally, because I loved him, I forgave him and believed his punching days were over.

Then one day he beat me so hard that he knocked me unconscious. After I woke up, he cried and said he would never lay another finger on me.

When I got home, my dad figured out what had happened. I was out of crazy stories and lies on why I was battered and bruised. Dad called the police, and Ken was arrested.

I finally had to have corrective surgery so I could breathe out of my nose normally. The doctor told me that if he had hit me a little harder, I might have died. I was devastated because Ken wasn’t a troublemaker and, at one time, was a wonderful, sweet guy.

His problem was that he couldn’t control his temper.

So girls, if your boyfriend is beating you, please believe me, the beatings will not stop until the guy gets professional psychiatric help. Life is too short to go through it as a punching bag. Don’t wait as long as I did. Let his first punch be his last!

How responder shows a major two-suiter opposite a oneno-trump opening bid depends upon his high-card count.

Yesterday, we learned that if the uncontested auction starts one no-trump – two clubs – two diamonds – two spades, the responder has shown five spades, four hearts and game-invitational values. What does he do with four spades, five hearts and that strength?

He responds two diamonds, a transfer to hearts, then rebids two spades, natural and game-invitational but nonforcing.

Here, this gives North, the opener, a problem. He knows that his side does not have an eight-card major-suit fit. But he has an excellent 16 points with three fantastic major-suit cards. So he moves toward game with three diamonds (not three no-trump!), wondering if South might be able to convert to three no-trump with a club stopper.

Here, though, South rebids three spades to show his powerful four-card suit. And North goes for game in the 4-3 fit.

West leads the club jack.

What happens?

The best defense is three rounds of clubs. To make the contract, South must discard a diamond, eliminating one inevitable loser without reducing his trump length. If East continues with a fourth club, declarer pitches a heart, ruffs or overruffs in the dummy, unblocks the heart ace-king, draws trumps, and claims when – whew! – the hearts split 3-3.

Note that four hearts also makes because of the friendly break.
