Just a freshman, it was Cami’s tenacity with Microsoft recruiters that landed her the summer gig designing apps for the Microsoft phone. After undergrad, Cassidy said she’s leaning toward going straight into the workforce, although she is considering graduate school. “I want to be able to make money and make a difference out there and apply what I know now to something that will matter,” she said.

Cassidy schedules lunches with just about any company she can while in Silicon Valley. A recent meeting with Google scored her a spot to explore its highly anticipated computer eye glasses – Google Glass.

DOWNERS GROVE – Cassidy Williams will step onto a jet in San Francisco on June 12 and, along with 99 computers programmers and tech leaders gathered by British Airways, collaborate to find solutions to global problems by the time the plane lands in London. Brainstorming with forward-thinking tech industry CEOs 30,000 feet above ground is just one in a long line of enviable opportunities she and younger sister Cami have pursued as undergraduate students at Iowa State University. When she returns from her flight, Cassidy, 21, will continue working on Apple applications as an intern for Intuit, the company that makes Quicken and other software. Cami, 18, will spend her summer in Seattle, interning for Microsoft, where Cassidy also previously interned. Cassidy set the initial, ambitious tone for the pair in eighth grade when she started working on her first website. Since then, they have been much the equals traveling to conferences and even recently speaking at the White House. “It’s definitely a collaborative effort when we go in to talk to companies,” Cami said. “We kind of go in as a packaged deal.” Their interests blossomed at Downers Grove South High School – where they took as many computer science and math courses as they could, they said – and continued at Iowa State University, where the two are both heavily involved on campus. Cami will be a sophomore in the fall. She said that so far, she still is exploring all components of computer science, from the back-end architecture of a system to the front-end user-face of

Village looks toward pedestrian-friendly improvements By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove took a new look at possible goals and projects to make the village more friendly for bicyclists and pedestrians in the short and long term. Public Works Director Naneil Newlon presented updated Bicycle and Pedestrian Plans at the May 21 council meeting, the result of surveys, studies, public outreach and other efforts by the village.

The study found residents think Downers Grove is walkable, in general, but that rail crossings and major traffic intersections do pose difficulties, among other issues. To address that issue, one of the long-term recommendations for the council is to evaluate the feasibility of a separated pedestrian crossings at Lee Street, the downtown and the railroad. Short-term recommendations include creating a bicycle and pedestrian task force, completing the network

of signed routes, increasing bicycle parking in the downtown, instituting a bicycle rack request system, and creating a plan to beautify pedestrian spaces and corridors in the downtown. Medium-term recommendations include identifying funding and locations for expanded bicycle parking at the commuter stations, completing the sidewalk network for at least one side of the street and installing count-down indicators on existing high-priority traffic signals.

All the softness you love, now in your carpet.

“I’m excited about the report,” Councilman Bob Barnett said. “There’s a lot in here that I think is an awesome starting point for, frankly, bigger council discussions about policy.” The plan had its first reading May 21, and Mayor Martin Tully said it probably will have another workshop session before moving to the consent agenda for a vote at a later date. Approving the plan would not approve launching all the projects therein – staff still would need council ap-

proval for any individual project costing more than $15,000. Tully praised the plan and the appeal that walkable and bike-friendly communities have for younger professionals. “This actually does have economic-development aspects to it,” he said. “We hear that in order to attract high quality businesses to locate in Downers Grove … we need to provide amenities that attract the kind of workforce that those companies seek to have nearby.”

DOWNERS GROVE – The District 58 Board of Education voted May 13 to start the first phase of security enhancements at all District 58 buildings. The work will take place this summer, for a cost of $132,970. “The safety and welfare of our students continues to be our No. 1 priority,” said Superintendent Kari Cremascoli. “Numerous measures have long been in place in District 58 to ensure students are educated in safe, nurturing environments, and these enhancements focus on both student safety and a welcoming school environment.” The phase one security enhancements will include the installation of a permanent doorbell, video camera, intercom and remote-controlled locks at the front entrances, as well as a monitor, speaker and unlocking controls in the main offices. Also included is the installation of a card system for entry by authorized staff. The board also approved the same installations at the two entrances at Longfellow Center, which houses the district’s technology and maintenance departments, as well as its Media Services Office.

DOWNERS GROVE – Firefighters from Downers Grove and three other departments extinguished a fire Thursday in a home’s attic in the 3700 block of Sterling Road. The 911 call came in at 5:09 p.m. Thursday, and the fire was out by 5:32 p.m., according to Downers Grove Fire Department Spokesperson Marsha Giesler. When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke, and the residents already were outside. They were able to suppress the flames quickly, she said. No injuries were reported. Investigators were on the scene to determine the cause.

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Summer Projects and Activities As Memorial Day is the unoicial start of summer, the warm sunny air draws millions of adults and children outside. Recreational activities such as use of music Dr. Terri Lightbody concerts, (630) 580-5777 irecrackers, power tools, irearms, NASCAR, sporting events, and motorcycles have one thing in common: noise. While noise itself isn’t bad, excessively loud noise is bad for the hearing. Warning signs from noise: • You hear ringing or buzzing in your ears ater exposure to noise. • You notice that you can hear people talking but you have diiculty understanding them ater exposure to noise. • You experience “fullness” in your ears ater leaving a noisy area. Even though you may have experienced these symptoms in the past, your hearing might not always “recover”, leaving you with a permanent hearing loss. hese types of hearing losses typically

show up several years ater the noise exposure. What you can do to protect your hearing: • With recreational activities that have loud noise levels, wear ear protection such as earplugs. Earplugs come in custom or non-custom styles. Non-custom type foam plugs are available at pharmacies and at hearing clinics. Custom earplugs with specialized attenuation ilters are available at a hearing clinic. • Limit exposure to noisy activities around the home. Children and adults using personal listening devices such as iPods, MP3 players that use earbuds should have their devices monitored for loudness levels. A key test for unsafe listening levels from earbuds or headphones is if someone is able to overhear the wearer’s music, then most likely the listening level is too loud. Hearing loss from noise is preventable. Monitor your hearing and be aware of potentially loud noises. If you experience any of the above symptoms or have questions, call our oice.

A plaque on one of the benches in the memorial garden and reading circle at Belle Aire Elementary School is built in memory of late Downers Grove District 58 teacher Dee Regas.

Garden dedicated in memory of former teacher Dee Regas’ legacy lives on at Belle Aire By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – If Dee Regas was known for something other than her generous nature and dedication to her children and students, it was her garden. “She was fabulous,” said Jill Oakley, longtime friend and former colleague at Belle Aire Elementary School in Downers Grove. “And you wouldn’t believe her yard. People used to go on impromptu garden walks to see her garden.” Regas, a former longtime kindergarten teacher at Belle Aire, was described by friends and family as someone who always was ready for guests. Whether it was for the group of high school friends she kept close with for 50 years, her friends from work who met regularly in a book club or for an impromptu gathering over a glass of wine in the living

room, the house always was open, Oakley said. Regas also shared her love of plants and flowers with her students at Belle Aire, where she taught for more than 20 years. Sometime during her tenure, she added a reading garden on the school grounds, a favorite place for students to learn outdoors. In the six years after her retirement in 2007, the garden slowly lost its luster without her care and maintenance. Regas died this winter at age 70 after a battle with cancer. Since, family, friends, colleagues and former students raised money to revamp the garden space she once loved. Because of their efforts, it has new benches, a plaque in her honor, freshly laid rock and landscaped plants. The school hosted a ribbon-cutting for the revamped garden last month at a teacher-appreciation luncheon. Oakley, who still teaches at the school, and other teachers bring their students to the garden on a weekly basis, when weather complies.

8POLICE REPORTS

Tea Party protests in front of Downers Grove IRS office DOWNERS GROVE – Tea Party activists gathered outside several Internal Revenue Offices in Illinois May 21, including Downers Grove’s, to protest recent revelations that the IRS unfairly targeted conservative groups. The protest follows recent IRS admissions that employees inappropriately flagged conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status for additional reviews and investigation. According to The Associated Press, organizations were spotlighted by the IRS because they had the words “tea party” or “patriot” in their applications. The Illinois Tea Party did not return calls for comment. The IRS’s office in Downers Grove is at 2001 Butterfield Road. – Suburban Life Media

DOWNERS GROVE Motorist allegedly exposes himself to jogger in Downers Grove A woman told police she was jogging at 11:45 a.m. May 22 at Fairview Avenue and Hill Street when a man driving a dark blue, newer-model sedan drove by her while fondling himself. Police did not find the man, and he was described as a heavy-set white man between 25 and 30 years old with a light complexion. The incident is similar but different from a May 8 report in which a jogger told police she was jogging at Grand Avenue and 59th Street when a man driving a black, newer-model sedan pulled up next to her and honked the horn before exposing and fondling himself and speeding away. The man was described as white, between 35 and 45 years old with short, light-colored hair. He wore a white T-shirt and did not appear to have any pants on, she told police. Police are investigating both incidents.

• GARDEN Continued from page 8 It’s a comforting place, Regas’ daughter, Coco O’Shaughnessy, said. As a reminder of a person as beloved as her mother, it can draw raw emotions this soon after her death. “It’s such a huge legacy she’s leaving behind,” she said. “When you see all the other folks’ lives that she touched, and kids that she helped teach and raise, it’s overwhelming.” O’Shaughnessy, her husband and children moved back to Downers Grove to be closer to family last year, just before Regas started showing symptoms of what later would be diagnosed as metastasized

cancer. The family moved into O’Shaughnessy’s childhood home with her mother for what they thought would be a temporary stay until they found a new house. But within months, Regas was gone, and O’Shaughnessy and her family found themselves staying in the home much longer than anticipated as they sort through belongings. The family’s new residence is bittersweet in another way, too. O’Shaughnessy’s son, Oliver, will start kindergarten at Belle Aire this fall, the same place Coco and her brothers went to school and where Regas taught. “She would have loved that,” she said.

Our cellphones dial in and dial out and text in and text out, with some games. When I watch La Grange Park Village board meetings, the president always has the attorney whispering something in his ear that the rest of the residents and probably board members can’t hear. It doesn’t happen with La Grange’s meetings. The attorney, when he’s had something to say, says it and everybody can hear it. This makes it seem like secretive things are going on. I’d like to see this stop in La Grange Park; let us hear everything the attorney is saying. If you don’t know what needs to be said or need to consult with that person, just table whatever it is being discussed and speak with the attorney privately.

of Illinois General Assembly. The bill gives Peoria County and DuPage County the power to levy and collect taxes and fees from residents to pay for stormwater improvements in these two counties. The bill also gives referendum power to approve or reject such fees or taxes to Peoria County voters, but not to DuPage County voters. State Sen. James Oberweis prepared and offered Senate amendment number 2 to give DuPage County taxpayers the same referendum power as those in Peoria County. The Oberweis amendment was stripped from the bill prior to the final vote. Evidently, DuPage County taxpayers are not intelligent or worthy enough to approve their own taxation, but Peoria County voters are.

PARESTHESIA Q: What is paresthesia? A: Paresthesia is the name for the condition in which skin feels tingly and numb. Think “pins and needles.” It occurs most commonly in the hands and feet, the feeling we sometimes describe as your foot “falling asleep.” It can also occur around the mouth as a numbness in the chin, cheek, lip or tongue that may set in after a dental procedure that requires anesthesia. It most commonly occurs in the lower jaw after removal of a wisdom tooth. It can happen after any difficult tooth extraction, and sometimes after even a relatively routine, non-surgical procedure. The condition is generally temporary, but can go on for a few weeks or months. Paresthesia can cause a loss of feeling in the lip or tongue, the result sometimes being drooling and accidental biting of the lip or tongue. It can change taste and temperature sensations in the mouth. Patients having wisdom teeth surgery are more susceptible to the condition. The cause is generally injury to a nerve, usually the mandibular or lower jaw nerve. Several studies have found also that the type of anesthesia used may be linked to subsequent paresthesia.

District 99 to adjust science curriculum for the next generation Statistics show that students in the U.S. have fallen behind their peers worldwide when it comes to achievement in science. This deficit is impairing our ability to compete globally and to develop innovative solutions to worldwide challenges, such as generating new sources of energy. That’s why at District 99, we’re bringing in the Lego COMMUNITY robots. VOICE The District 99 Education Michael Foundation, which is spearheaded by community volunHeinz teers, just provided my department with a generous grant to purchase robotics kits, which use Legos as building blocks. These kits are no toys, though: they will serve as a seriously sophisticated and powerful learning resource for all of our students. Using the kits in their physics classes, students will design physical robots and circuitry that runs the robots, and use computer program algorithms to have the robots perform tasks. This will give our students new experiences and opportunities to experiment with engineering design, computer coding and electronics. The kits are just one example of how District 99 is addressing the new science standards called “Next Generation Science Standards” (NGSS), which will raise a student’s level of analysis and critical thinking, and opportunities to learn engineering design and development. On April 9, the final edition of the standards was released. NGSS will replace state standards that have been in place for 15 years – well before the explosion of the Internet. In District 99, curriculum to align with NGSS is expected to be adopted in the 2014-15 school year. NGSS will significantly improve science education and student achievement across our nation – and make major changes to the way that science is taught. The performance expectations emphasize the process of “doing” science, a change from the past when teachers lectured and students memorized. We will be arming students with skills for the “real world,” such as asking questions, defining problems, analyzing and interpreting data and communicating. Thinking as a scientist does, I predict that NGSS will revolutionize the way our students learn, and ultimately ensure that they – and our country – can enjoy a brighter future.

A more than 20-year-old court ruling has been a cause for concern and headaches for neighbors of a Downers Grove excavating company. The business, Donegal Excavating, has been allowed to operate on a residential parcel since 2008. The issue took center stage again during a forum that was supposed to be centered on a proposed senior living center nearby. We side with the residents in this case – a solution needs to be found, as a commercial business should not be allowed to operate on a residential parcel.

Restaurant reviews

Hinsdale’s CiNe brings lively color to Mexican fare HINSDALE – From its menu of upscale Mexican fare and its vibrant atmosphere down to its colorful logo: What you see is what you get at CiNe, a modern Mexican taqueria that’s as energizing as it is delicious. My companion and I made our destination downtown Hinsdale on a recent Friday. Venturing along the village’s hills and dream homes was a treat en route to the restaurant, but stepping inside was a breath of fresh air after a week full of work. The front façade of CiNe pays homage to the original theater, with an awning protruding over a downtown sidewalk and a small row of outdoor seating. The colorful, lit-up CiNe logo graces the awning, letting incoming patrons know just what to expect upon entrance. The interior transports guests to a Miami-like atmosphere – it’s colorful, yet easy on the eyes and modern, but just warm and cozy enough. Much like you would find at other Mexican fare restaurants,

the chips and salsa were complimentary and were brought immediately by our waiter, who greeted us with a smile and kind introduction, as well. The salsa was a pleasant surprise, having just enough kick for my satisfaction, but not enough to deter my companion with more sensitive tastebuds. Picking up the menu, patrons are given options typical of Mexican eateries – quesadillas and tostadas as appetizers, tacos, fajitas and enchiladas for entrees – but each with its own little twist courtesy of the chef. Then there are the more unique dishes, including the Filete a la Tomatillo, a hanger steak marinated in guajillo and agave, accompanied by roasted potatoes. One of three Chef’s Specials was the Sarandeado, a smoked walleye over potato puree served with a relish. CiNe offers an extensive list of wine, cocktail and beer options. For an appetizer, my companion and I couldn’t pass on the Carnitas Quesadillas, made with slow braised pork

We each downed two portions of the appetizer, making for just enough of a prelude to our meal along with the chips and salsa. The gem of the menu, though, is the taco selection. Patrons can combine any four types from traditional options such as pastor pork, chicken flautas and skirt steak, to albondiga – a type of meatball – and

vegetariano, potato croquettes along with relish, sour cream and queso fresco. I opted for two each of the pastor and skirt steak tacos, taking a stronger liking to the latter. My companion went with the enchiladas, and she enjoyed the juicy and flavorful shredded chicken. A creamy Mexican rice put the dish over the top and had me convinced that

Downers Grove South players celebrate Saturday in Hinsdale after beating Waubonsie Valley 4-1 to claim a regional title.

HINSDALE – Forget Green Bay. Downers Grove can stake its claim as Titletown. The baseball teams from Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South joined their softball counterparts as regional champions on Saturday. North topped Metea Valley 6-5 in nine innings to win the Class 4A Oswego regional while South defeated Waubonsie Valley 4-1 to take the title at Hinsdale Central. It was South’s first regional title since 2011 and North’s first since 2007, and it set up a sectional semifinal showdown between the two teams. The Mustangs topped the Trojans 7-3 in early May

thanks in large part to eight North errors, but the playoff matchup is a whole new affair. “We’re probably going to see a different pitcher from them, and they’re going to see a different pitcher from us,” South coach Darren Orel said. “You don’t put a whole lot of stock into that game. defensively like they are capable of doing.” North coach Chad Isaacson has had one message for his team all season, and it doesn’t change no matter the game or opponent. “We’ve got to take care of our own business,” he said. “We’ve got to be able to do what we do in order to win. Every team you play from here on out has proved that they belong and has earned it, so you throw the records out the window.” Ray Greco singled home Matt Zabloudil in the bottom of the ninth to deliver North’s regional title. Metea scored four times in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, but North (21-11) scored twice in the sixth. Brian Glowicki pitched a

complete game and allowed just one earned run in the top of the seventh as the Mustangs won their regional. South’s 5-6-7 hitters – Matt Zinnecker, Alex Galik and Javier Martinez – combined to go 5-of-8 with two runs and three RBIs. Both teams practiced Monday to get ready for Wednesday’s game, with both coaches respecting the opponent. “Downers Grove South is as good as any team in the state,” Isaacson said. “We have to play well, and that’s it.” “We’ll go out and battle as hard as we can, and hopefully the team that plays the best wins,” Orel said. “The downside of it is that one of us has to lose.”

Ten wins lead Mustangs to top-10 finish at state SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

Team standings

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - John Artus, Tony Leto, and the doubles team of Cody Freischlag and Cody San Andres all went 3-2 and helped Downers Grove South’s boys tennis team earn a top-10 finish as last week’s state tournament. Artus and Leto each won their first two matches before being bounced into the consolation bracket (3Artus fell to eventual state champ Martin Joyce of Hinsdale Central in the third round). Each then won their first consolation match before bowing out of the tourney. Artus and Leto dropped just seven games each through the first two rounds, with Leto winning a 6-0 set in each of his first two matches. He

added another shutout with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lyons Township’s Cuyler Burke in his first consolation match. Artus came back to pull out an impressive 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Champaign Central’s Austin Aten in his first consolation match before being bounced out of the tournament. Freischlag and San Andres won three straight to start the tour-

McFarland sprints to pair of all-state medals SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA CHARLESTON - Odell McFarland did plenty of running and quite a bit of climbing over the weekend. The Downers Grove South senior ran in both the 100- and 200-meter dash finals races at the Class 3A state meet at Eastern Illinois University, and he climbed the podium with a pair of top-four finishes. McFarland clocked 21.89 seconds to finish runner-up in the 200 and crossed the line in 10.91 for fourth in the 100. Backed by McFarland’s two all-state finishes, the Mustangs tallied 19 points and finished tied for 11th in the team standings at the end of Saturday’s finals races. Senior Jalen Lewis added a third impressive finish for South as he took fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.38. Lewis also qualified in the 110 hurdles and was just .30 seconds away from making the finals in that race. Jacob Amiri competed in the 800 run prelims at state for South.

Downers Grove North A top-10 finisher at the state cross country meet last fall, Zach Smith ran a 4:14.49 and captured third in the 1,600-meter run at the Class 3A state track and field meet last weekend. Smith was just over two seconds off the winning pace set by St. Ignatius’ Jack Keelan (4:12.11) and was less than a second away from second place. The Trojans made their presence known in the other distance race as senior Ben Eaton finished ninth in the 3,200 with a time of 9:10.76. Thanks to Smith’s and Eaton’s showings, the Trojans earned eight team points and finished tied for 34th in the team standings. North sophomore Nick Janicki qualified for state in the discus but did not advance to the finals.

Zach Wood and Ryan McMillan played in the doubles bracket at state and helped the Mustangs’ team cause with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win in consolation play that earned a point for South that kept it one point ahead of Neuqua Valley in the final team tally.

Downers Grove North Chandler Downs and Tristan Burnham won their opening match in doubles play at the state tournament 7-5, 6-2 over Rockford Guilford’s Ian Brandon-Beeman and Patrick Moore to earn both team points for the Trojans.

Mustangs rally from 6-run deficit to beat No. 1 seed By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com BATAVIA - A 6-0 deficit after an inning? No problem for Downers Grove South’s softball team. The No. 9-seed Mustangs gave up six first-inning runs to No. 1 Naperville Central in Saturday’s Class 4A Batavia regional championship game, but battled all the way back for a 10-8 win. “It was an incredible game,” South coach Ron Havelka said. “It was a very wild game. teams were really hitting the ball well. It was a nice day for us. I was so proud of the girls. Down 6-0 to the No. 1 seed and a very good pitcher, and to come back like that was really unreal. It wasn’t just that we won, but the way we won.”

Jess Andree had three hits, including a three-run home run in the four-run third inning. Caitlyn Daly followed with a solo home run as the Mustangs clawed back into the game. Andree finished with three RBIs while Daly had two. South (2010) had a four-run outburst in the fifth to take a 9-7 lead en route to its first regional title since 2011. The Mustangs were set to face Wheaton Warrenville South on Tuesday in a semifinal game of the Neuqua Valley sectional.

Heflin’s no-hitter returns Trojans to regional glory By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Falling short in the playoffs the last three years after successful regular seasons, Downers Grove North’s softball team captured its first regional title since 2010 with a 2-0 win over Oswego East in the championship game of their own regional Saturday. “The girls were ecstatic. They were being just like kids, which they are,” North coach Mark Magro said. “It was like the Stanley Cup. Girls were taking pictures by the scoreboard with the regional plaque. I’m proud of them.” Ali Woitovich doubled home Kelsey Gockman in the fourth

an Gockman’s single plated a run in the sixth to give pitcher Elaine Heflin all the support she needed. Heflin struck out 17 and pitched a no-hitter. An infield error was the only blemish for the Trojans’ (25-8) defense. The regional title win was especially sweet for Heflin, Carolyn Nojiri, Brittany Nagy and

Madeline Wojciak, who were part of the last regional title team as freshmen but are the leaders of the current team as seniors. The regional win set up a showdown with Benet in a sectional semifinal. The two teams normally play each other in the regular season but had this year’s clash canceled due to weather. It will be the first time Heflin’s power pitching goes against Benet’s prolific offense. “I told the girls to enjoy (the regional win), but also that we have bigger goals in mind,” Magro said. “We’ve never won a sectional game. Benet should be a good matchup because a lot of the girls know each other so well.”

North’s Zabloudil emerges as standout catcher after working in bullpen last year

By JASON ROSSI DOWNERS GROVE – Crouching down behind home plate gives Matt Zabloudil a much different view than he experienced last spring. The Downers Grove North senior catcher was primarily the Trojans’ bullpen catcher last spring as three-year varsity starter Pat Lowry commanded a spot in the starting lineup. Zabloudil bided his time and earned his chance this spring, and he’s made the transition to full-time catcher look easy. “I new it would be big shoes to fill, especially because it’s kind of a new thing for me,” Zabloudil said. “But I’ve worked with good coaches so when I got to varsity it made it a little easier.” To be sure, there is nothing really easy about being a catcher. There are the bumps and bruises from foul balls and blocking pitches in the

North coach Chad Isaacson said. “He’s a kid that could have started for us last year, but he had a three-year starter in front of him.” A starter on the freshman and sophomore teams, the 2012 summer season was

The Hilltoppers won the first game and threatened to pull away in the second game, but Timreck helped turn the momentum in the Mustangs’ (25-11) favor. He served three points to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 9-6 lead. When West seemed to seize a little momentum with a sideout that made it 14-11 later in the game, he had

back-to-back kills to pad the lead. And in the third game, he had a kill and two block-kills as the Mustangs’ 9-7 lead swelled to 16-7 during David DeMarco’s service run. “Nick has been that way all year long,” South coach Kurt Steuer said. “He’s someone we rely on and the guys put a lot of faith in him that he’ll be able to put the ball down almost every time he touches. He’s a leader on the court and someone we love to have.” The win not only delivered South’s first regional title since 2011 but also made a longtime dream become a reality for Timreck. “It’s awesome. We had a bittersweet loss in the regional finals last year, but this year it’s just awesome. It feels amazing,” he said. “It’s the way I’ve always imagined it since I started playing freshman year. I always wanted to win a regional championship on our home floor, and we did it.”

Injury-plagued Trojans make early playoff exit after fast season start By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove North’s boys volleyball teamed roared out of the gate with a 12-0 record to start the season, but then injuries took a heavy toll. After the hot start and dealing with the injuries, the Trojans played around .500 and the season ended with a 14-25, 25-17, 25-18 loss to Wheaton Warrenville South in a regional semifinal game May 21. “It was like we took one step forward and one step back all season after our start,” North coach Mark Wasik said. “Once our schedule started heating up is when we needed to be at full strength and that’s when we had all

these injuries pop up.” Senior outside hitter Gilius Blinstrubas was limited with bursitis (which was initially thought to be a stress fracture). The Trojans (23-13) also dealt with broken fingers to three different players, and when Michael Grant came back after missing the early part of the season with a stress fracture in his foot, he rolled his ankle and was sidelined again. Wasik said he had

his full lineup for just one match this season. The good part of all the injuries was that the younger players that will return next season had more opportunities to play. “It didn’t help us in the here and now, but it helped us grow and added to our depth,” Wasik said. West Suburban Silver all-conference selections Blinstrubas and Brooks Nevrly are among seven seniors that will not return but leave behind a good example for the players coming back. “They leave behind a lesson in unity,” Wasik said. “They were really good friends and hung out beyond being a team on the court. It made for an enjoyable coaching experience.”

Zabloudil’s introduction to varsity baseball, and Isaacson didn’t hesitate giving him the full load. Zabloudil was calling pitches, calling out defensive plays, controlling opponents’ running games and, most importantly, building a bond with the pitchers that would form the backbone of the rotation. That latter part was an extension of something that started during the spring season. “The great thing about being the bullpen catcher is that you get to work with a lot of the guys every day,” Zabloudil said.

Isaacson lauded Zabloudil’s ability to receive the ball, meaning he does a superb job stopping balls high and low and to either side of the plate. The coach also said Zabloudil controls the base paths with a good throwing arm and generally takes command of the game. That he is also one of the Trojans’ leading hitters in terms of average is a bonus. This spring is Zabloudil’s last donning the catching gear. In the fall, he will be the third generation of his family to attend Villanova University, where he will study business and accounting with the hopes of one day working in the front office for a sports franchise. With that in mind, he’s relished every moment of his senior season. “Senior year, it’s been a blast. I wouldn’t change anything,” Zabloudil said. “The biggest thing I wanted to do was go out there and have fun. It’s a great group of guys and I’ve enjoyed every day with them.”

hen the weather gets dark and gloomy on a warm afternoon, big storm clouds roll in and the sky turns an unusual color, there might be a tornado on the way. Tornadoes are violent storms that begin in a thunderstorm and extend all the way to the ground. They have strong winds that often (but not always) form a funnel shape, and can destroy many buildings, cars and trees in their path. Tornadoes form when a warm and moist pocket of air runs into a cold and dry front. When the two meet, they can cause the atmosphere to become unstable. If strong winds meet this unstable atmosphere, it can spin the storm into a tube formation, called a funnel cloud. Once the funnel cloud forms, it can be very dangerous. There is normally a warning when a tornado is on the way. You will often hear a tornado siren in your town if conditions are right for a tornado to form. If you are watching TV or listening to the radio, you will also hear a warning. Tornadoes are also very, very loud. You will often hear the sound of a tornado coming — like a loud train going by — before you see it. If a tornado is on the way, you need to move very quickly to make yourself safe. Here are a few things to remember: ! Avoid windows. If a window breaks, you want to be away from the glass. ! Go to the basement: Basements are often the safest place to be in a tornado. If you don’t have a basement, get on the lowest floor of the building away from windows. ! Protect yourself: Get under a heavy table, cover yourself with a mattress or crouch on the floor with your head covered in a safe place. ! At school: Follow the drill! Know what the plan is for a tornado at school. Listen to your teachers’ instructions, and keep calm and quiet. — By Anne Raih, More Content Now

Many of the most effective staging tips are also inexpensive. Nothing turns off buyers faster than a dirty house. Before you list your house, give it a thorough top-to-bottom cleaning. Painting is one of the cheapest, easiest ways to help your home look fresh and great. Choose neutral colors.

Keep grass looking its best To maintain a lovely lawn, the experts at Lowe’s offer these tips: n Most lawns will grow well with about 1 inch of water a week. Water in the early morning, so the sun will help dry the grass. Nighttime watering can result in prolonged moisture on the blades and can open the door to disease. n how do you know if you’re watering enough? Try the “soup can test.” Set an empty can next to your lawn sprinkler. When there’s about a half-inch of water in the can, it’s time to turn off the sprinkler. n When you’re mowing, never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade. Leaving the grass longer encourages a deeper root system. To better protect your lawn on hills, mow up and down when using a riding mower and across when using a walk-behind mower. n Already dealing with weeds? Post-emergents are a great way to promote grass growth while killing actively growing weeds on contact. Post-emergents work best when applied later in the growing season - after weeds are established but before they’ve gone to seed. Read the fertilizer’s label and strictly follow the application instructions for best results.

Old trees, new life Artist turns reclaimed wood into furniture by Lizabeth Gray Scripps howard News Service

Three years ago, a visionary project called the Urban Tree Forge almost toppled with the death of founder John Metzler. It could have disappeared altogether if not for others who shared his passion for trees. Today, artist Jason Boone carries on that vision at Urban Tree, a new name and a new location in Pittsburgh. “It’s been a lifelong dream to have a workshop, bring in the wood on one side and the furniture comes out the other,” said Boone.

Lifelong passion Like many life passions, Boone’s love of woodworking started at an early age, on a farm near Kansas City, Mo. “My parents were brave enough to allow me to have a fair amount of tools in the garage,” he said, laughing. A young entrepreneur, he would buy pattern books, go around town getting orders and return later with the finished piece.

two bowling pins that were sculpted by Jason boone of Urban tree.

He said the direction of his life changed the day Metzler died in 2010. “He passed away May 13, and he had a bunch of jobs waiting to be finished,” said Boone. “I jumped in and helped finish up. Then in July, I got laid off from the architectural firm.” Boone’s dream remained with the forge, and so did he. However, many of the other artists drifted away. “I started up my own company, buying out pieces of the Urban Tree Forge, even some of the wood,” he said. In July, he made the move from the old location to the new one. It still functions as a cooperative, with five businesses sharing the space. Boone’s dream of a “full-cycle” workshop came closer with the

building of a drying kiln, a key component in creating quality furniture. Important to Boone’s vision is keeping everything local.

The process The process begins when someone calls to donate his raw material. A board member of Tree Pittsburgh who has participated in Arbor Aid for five years, he is sensitive to people’s feelings about trees and the years they have invested in them. “In general, people don’t want to cut their trees down,” he said. “They come down for reasons out of their control.” Not concerned with the type

of tree, he is looking for big ones, 30 to 36 inches in diameter, that he can slice into slabs with his monster of an Alaskan chain saw. “I get a lot of pin oak, ash trees, beech and maples along with a few cherry and a few walnuts.” After four to six hours of work, he ends up with six to eight planks, which are transported back to Urban Tree. They are stacked to air-dry in a large room in the front end of the warehouse for a year or two before they go to the drying kiln. Kiln-drying time for wood varies with the species. Some take as little as a month, while others may take as much as four months.
