Jackpot in Geneva
Local family wins $4.85M in lottery
By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Rick and Bonnie Cerezo were in the process of losing their Geneva home after struggling for two years to make house payments. It wasn’t until August that the house took on a whole new significance for the Cerezos – it holds the bedroom of their late daughter, Savannah, who died at age 14 on Aug. 12 from what doctors believe may have been a stroke. “We could not lose that last piece of her existence or proof of her existence,” Rick Cerezo said. “To use Bonnie’s phrase, we didn’t want Savannah to be a box in somebody’s basement.” Not quite a year after their daughter died, the Cerezos found out that they no longer had to worry about losing their home. For months, they unknowingly had been storing a lottery ticket worth millions of dollars in a cookie jar in their kitchen. Savannah had given the jar to her mother as a gift for Mother’s Day last year. The Illinois Lotto ticket – worth $4.85 million – was purchased in February, the same month as Savannah’s birthday. In April, Rick Cerezo said, he decided to run to a gas station to buy a soda, and Bonnie suggested he take the 11 tickets stored in the cookie jar with him to see whether any were winners. The first few tickets were duds, and an-

other was worth $3. Then, the words “file a claim” appeared when he checked the eighth ticket. Later, the Cerezos double-checked the numbers online and saw that only one ticket was sold to win a prize of $4.85 million.
“In an instant, everyone starts crying,” Rick Cerezo said. “We knew who was behind it.” About two years before her death, Savannah had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was in and out of hospitals as doctors adjusted her medications. The Cerezos decided that one parent should be able to accompany Savannah to the hospital and stay with her, which meant one of them would need to stop working. As a consultant, Rick Cerezo made more money, but the job required heavy
travel and didn’t provide health insurance, so he decided to quit. He said it wasn’t long before their children started noticing that money was tight, and he said Savannah was trying to find a way to pay the family back. “She wanted to know what she could do to help,” Rick Cerezo said. “We couldn’t believe that was coming from her. We told her, ‘Just love us the way we love you.’ ” Four days before she died, Savannah had been complaining about a headache and took a nap. When she woke up, Rick Cerezo said, her motor skills were so unstable that they called 911. At the hospital, Savannah went through more than four hours of seizures before being chemically induced into a coma. By her fourth day in the hospital, Savannah had lost all but 1 percent of her brain function. “They posed the question to us, and we decided to let God finish his mission to recruit our little angel,” Rick Cerezo said. The Cerezos said they chose not to be angry with God and to understand that everything happens for a reason, despite how difficult it was to accept. “Somehow, some way, through faith, you always get your payout,” Rick Cerezo said. “Her room is the last thing that was her. ... God granted us that and more to make sure it’s ours.”

Ready to roar
Sugar Grove Lions making changes, hoping to grow
By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Chris Halsey has been involved for years in the Elburn Lions Club. Halsey, the vice district governor-elect of the district that includes areas such as Elburn and Sugar Grove, points out that Elburn’s is the state’s largest Lions Club. But Halsey, a Sugar Grove resident, said he believes that Sugar Grove also can have a growing, active Lions Club. Halsey has been working with Laurie and Kevin Geary on a sort of relaunch for the Sugar Grove club, with Laurie Geary as president and Kevin Geary as vice president. “There’s no reason Sugar Grove shouldn’t have a club with 50 members,” Halsey said. He said the Elburn club has about 180 members. But the Sugar Grove Lions Club has watched its numbers go up and down, and the relaunch is targeting some changes that the Gearys and Halsey hope will boost membership. Lions clubs are organizations tasked with performing community service. In particular, Lions groups are associated with the mission of helping the blind and visually impaired. The idea of building up the Sugar Grove Lions Club isn’t new. Bill Keck, former Kane County auditor, said he and his father were charter members in 1969. Keck said the organization has had periods of great enthusiasm, but also some spots in which participation was down. And Keith Koester, who was the Sugar Grove Lions Club president last year, said building up the club is a difficult task. And while Koester said he doesn’t agree with the path the Gearys are taking, he said he hopes the club is successful.

Chris Halsey, a director of the Elburn Lions Club, offers suggestions during a Sugar Grove Lions Club meeting. The Sugar Grove community service club hopes to build its membership.
Know more The Sugar Grove Lions Club meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Sugar Grove Public Library, 125 Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove. Those interested in joining can attend a meeting or call Laurie Geary at 630-308-4470 or Kevin Geary at 630-309-4470. “The Lions Club is a very good club,” Koester said. ••• Kevin Geary is a Sugar Grove village trustee, and he is just coming off a bid for village president in the April election. He lost to incumbent Sean Michels. Laurie Geary became a Sugar Grove Township trustee. Kevin Geary said taking on the Lions Club relaunch task is “an extension of our community service,” as both he and
his wife have been active in organizations in the village. The Gearys recently have had Sugar Grove Lions Club meetings at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of every month at the Sugar Grove Public Library, 125 Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove. Those interested in joining can attend a meeting or call Laurie Geary at 630-308-4470 or Kevin Geary at 630-309-4470. At a recent meeting, the Gearys and Halsey said a big key was doing away with the tradition of having the Sugar Grove Lions Club provide the fireworks for the annual Sugar Grove Corn Boil festival. The club had to raise about $15,000 to put on the show, and Koester said that had become a struggle. Koester said the club was going to discontinue the fireworks anyway. Halsey said there are better ways to spend $15,000, and he talked of purchasing a
machine that could help identify issues with the vision of youths – issues that could be treated by a professional. The Gearys agreed that the fireworks shouldn’t be emphasized. Laurie Geary said it’s an opportunity to “show we are back out there, and not just for fireworks.” “You spend a significant portion of the year raising money to spend it immediately,” Kevin Geary said, adding, “we weren’t set up to handle that.” ••• Keck said that when the Sugar Grove Lions Club was
launched, “there seemed to be a need.” He said there were dances and social events that drew couples, and those involved embraced the idea of a service organization. But he said there have been times in which membership has gone down. The village continues to grow, but it can be a struggle to attract new members, he said. “Even though we have a lot of people moving in, we’re not reaching them,” Keck said. Koester said that can be difficult to do. He said Elburn’s club is visible – the Lions Club facility is used throughout the year for many events, and Lions Park provides a place for youths to play, as well as athletic fields. Sugar Grove doesn’t have that. “Elburn’s got their club,” Koester said. “They’ve got a facility. If you don’t have a facility, it’s hard. … We don’t have a home. We meet at a local establishment. It’s very difficult.” Koester said the group does good work, saying “we bought glasses for people who couldn’t afford it.” But he said he’s not sure whether the club can be successful. Halsey said he gets great satisfaction through his work with the Lions, and he believes that if the Sugar Grove Lions Club increases its visibility and gets involved with the community, there would be growth. “It’s an organization where you can see the fruits of your labor,” Halsey said.

Police officials investigate an incident where a train hit and killed a pedestrian Tuesday morning near Gary and Sheila lanes in Geneva.
Police: Pedestrian hit by train dies in Geneva By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Police say a person died after being struck by a freight train Tuesday morning in the 2000 block of Gary Lane in Geneva. Police responded to the area of Randall Road and Keslinger Road about 8:45 a.m. for a report of a pedestrian struck by a train. The victim was discovered in the 2000 block of Gary Lane east of Randall Road and was pro-
nounced dead at the scene, according to a news release. The victim was not identified Tuesday. Metra service was halted west of Geneva as police investigated the incident. The accident prompted Metra to send out travel advisories, and trains scheduled to arrive in Elburn and LaFox instead ended in Geneva until the situation was resolved. Metra officials said it was “a pedestrian incident” that did not involve a Metra train.
Police said the train was traveling east when it struck the pedestrian, and it was stopped near Gary and Sheila lanes in Geneva. It appeared to have been carrying coal. The Geneva Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Kane County Coroner’s Office, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Charles Police Department, the Elburn Police Department, the Union Pacific Railroad Police Department and the Metra Police Department.

Ottawa and Wedron, and he graduated from Serena High School in 1942, where he excelled in basketball. Immediately following his graduation, he joined the U.S. Army at Fort Crowder, Mo., and was assigned to the Army Signal Corps. He served in Okinawa and Korea until his discharge in 1945. On Nov. 18, 1950, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Jean (Joneson) Fosse, in Ottawa. They lived in Ottawa, Decatur, Moline and Rock Island before settling in St. Charles in 1957. During these years, they also started a family that grew to include sons Kevin, Kenton and Kim, and daughter Lisa. George was an official court reporter for the state of Illinois for almost a half-century, including 40 years at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva, and he served as president of the Illinois Court Reporters Association for two terms. Following his retirement in 1997, he became a bailiff at the courthouse until retiring a second time in 2010 at the age of 86! Not much of a hobbyist, George’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, and he especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. He was an avid fan of the Cubs, Bulls, Illinois basketball and, to the chagrin of his sons, Notre Dame
football. He was also a Disabled American Veteran and a member of the American Legion. But most notably, George was a selfless man who spent the majority of his life caring for others. He was a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and compassionate friend whose kindness, quick wit, sharp memory and generosity will be missed by all who knew him. George was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, in 2004; a son, Kenton; his parents; his brother, Joseph Wayne Fosse; a sister, Marjorie (Fosse) Schroff; two nephews, David LeBrun and David Ferracuti; and a niece, Debra Ferracuti. He is survived by three children, Kevin (Katie) Fosse of Boulder, Colo., Kim (Cindy) Fosse of Naperville and Lisa Fosse of St. Charles; two granddaughters, Kendall and Kourtney of Boulder, Colo.; two sisters, Eileen (Fosse) Hoxsey of Serena and Connie (Fosse) Barto of Mission Viejo, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; his lifelong friend, LeRoy Muffler of Serena; and his daughter’s heartbroken pugs, Jazzy, Coconut and Cici. The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St. (corner of routes 25 and 64) in St. Charles. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, at Yurs

Cameras to be allowed in Kane courtroom trials by mid-June By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s courtrooms soon will gain more visibility for certain trials, beginning in mid-June. Last week, the Illinois Supreme Court signed off on a set of policies and procedures crafted by the judges serving in Kane’s courtrooms that would allow media organizations to request and gain the ability to use cameras to cover local court proceedings. “Our hope is introducing cameras will give citizens greater access to their courts, yet still preserve the dignity of the judicial process and the guaranteed right to fair trials,” Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride said in a prepared statement. “We look forward to Kane County’s results.” Kane County will become the 29th county in Illinois to enact policies permitting cameras in courtrooms under a pilot program launched last year by Kilbride and the Supreme Court. In more than a year since, cameras have been allowed into courtrooms for several trials, such as the DuPage County murder trial of Johnny Borizov earlier this month. In addition to DuPage County, cameras are now allowed in courtrooms in DeKalb, Kendall, Lake, Boone
and Winnebago counties, among others. The Supreme Court order does not immediately throw open the doors of all courtrooms in the county to cameras. Rather, the approved policies would allow each trial judge to determine if and when cameras would be permitted. All media requests would need to be submitted to a judge presiding over a trial two weeks in advance, and notice would be provided to both parties involved in a case. Those parties would then have an opportunity to object to allowing cameras. With the policy in place, Kane County Court Administrator Doug Naughton said the county’s judiciary is now in the process of finalizing its procedures. He said that process should be completed by either June 10 or June 17. Kane County Chief Judge Judith Brawka said the policies would apply, for now, to only courtrooms in the county’s two main courthouses, the Kane County Judicial Center near St. Charles and the Kane County Courthouse in downtown Geneva. She said limiting the program initially would “provide a model before it is expanded to other branch court facilities,” such as the county’s courtrooms on Randall Road in St. Charles.

na said, noting it would add a step to the process. Fifth Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis agreed. “I would hate to put more government into government,” she said. Second Ward Alderman Rita Payleitner said the commission’s review would put another set of eyes on applications and could identify potential areas of concern. Ultimately, the committee agreed with a suggestion by Martin: that the commission will meet at the request of the commissioner. This way, Martin said, routine requests can proceed while the difficult applications could receive more scrutiny. Rogina said he appreciated the thoroughness of the conversation. He thanked Martin for his research and credited Police Chief Jim Lamkin and City Administrator Brian Townsend for their work as well.
Knights Against Bullying continues push for change By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Thanking officials at Kaneland School Board 302 for putting together a task force on bullying, a member of the group called Knights Against Bullying read a statement at Tuesday’s board meeting that indicated it was only a first step and much more work is needed to address the subject. Earlier this year, district officials presented the results of a task force assembled to address the issue. Leigh Ann Reusche, one of the members of the task force, also is part of Knights Against Bullying. The group pushed for change early in the school year, packing a board meeting as its members told district officials they needed to take stronger action to prevent bullying.

Michelle Phillips of Knights Against Bullying read the group’s statement Tuesday night at the board meeting at Harter Middle School. She distributed copies of the statement to the media and to board members. In it, the group identified four areas of concern: • Failure to develop a district-wide plan or recommendations. • Failure to get input from a variety of stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents and community members. • Failure to recommend revisions to the current bullying
policies. • Failure to share data and how that information correlates with changes that are being considered or implemented. District officials did not comment on the statement, which was read during a public comment segment of the meeting. Attached to the statement was an assessment tool that is part of the DuPage County Best Practices in Bullying Prevention and Intervention. The statement called for the district to work with teachers and community members and to “listen to our students.” “We would again like to stress the importance of opening this discussion,” Phillips said, reading from the statement. “We understand this is a process, and changes will not occur overnight.”
BATAVIA – Dozens of students, parents, teachers and community members spoke in support Tuesday of Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden, who was disciplined for warning his students not to incriminate themselves before answering an in-class survey about emotional and at-risk behavior. “These kids need to know that the U.S. Constitution is there for them,” Batavia 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff told Batavia School Board members. Wolff spoke before school board members went into a closed session to discuss the matter. At press time, board members were still in the closed session. Fellow Batavia High School teacher Scott Bayer also spoke in support of Dryden. “He is able to break through student apathy like no other teacher I know,” Bayer said. He said other teachers ad-
vised students in a similar manner about the survey. “Every teacher I talked to addressed students in the same way,” he said. Before the meeting, Dryden spoke about what happened. “I advised my students that they had a Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves,” Dryden said Tuesday. “It was not my intention for them not to take the survey.” As a result of his actions, Dryden, who has taught at the high school for 20 years, said he was docked a day’s pay. Parent Emily Farrell had said she was upset that students’ names were pre-printed on the surveys, which asked students whether they had used drugs or alcohol. “That’s a complete invasion of personal information,” she said. “They were asking very personal questions.” An online petition at www.thepetitionsite.com has garnered more than 7,000 signatures supporting Dryden’s actions.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles aldermen are ready to establish a five-member liquor commission that will act in an advisory capacity only, the Government Services Committee decided Tuesday. Now, it’s up to city staff and the city attorney to craft an ordinance establishing such a body. “You have your work cut out for you, staff,” Chairman Jim Martin said. Tuesday’s discussion was part of an ongoing conversation about the city’s liquor license code. Aldermen have been scrutinizing liquor license issues since former Mayor Don DeWitte proposed an earlier closing time last year due to problems stemming from over-serving. The committee last month expressed a desire to create a liquor commission that
would join the existing liquor license commissioner, a position filled by the mayor. Mayor Ray Rogina, who does not sit on the committee, prefaced the discussion with his thoughts on the subject. In addition to himself, he said, he would like the commission to have two citizens and two aldermen. “[The commission] can be advisory, if that’s your pleasure,” Rogina said. “But I do want input.” Aldermen agreed to five members who will conduct disciplinary hearings but will serve only in an advisory capacity. They also supported the annual review of 2 a.m. licenses, though specific issues regarding that will be decided later. They took longer to decide whether the commission should review every liquor license application. That would be unnecessary if the commission is truly advisory, Rogi-

Farmers market to open Saturday By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Vendors in the Sugar Grove Farmers Market are gearing up for another season starting from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The farmers market, which organizer Pat Graceffa said will be run by volunteers this year, is at the Sugar Grove Village Hall parking lot at Route 30 and Municipal Drive in Sugar Grove. The market is open rain or shine and runs each Saturday through September. She said a company had been hired to run the farmers market for the past two years, but prices kept climbing for vendors, making it unaffordable for some of the smaller vendors to participate. This year, vendors can participate in the farmers market for a quarter of the price, she said. Two farmers are already confirmed. Norway Farms out of Norway, Ill., is one vendor, and Graceffa said the vendor will have fresh fruits and vegetables, along with jarred goods such as pickles and honey. Another vendor, Grandma’s Eggs out of Sugar Grove,

OPINIONS ANOTHER VIEW
Can House resist ideological urge to kill immigration bill? BLOOMBERG NEWS One more hurdle is cleared. The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee gave its approval last week to comprehensive immigration legislation. Happy news, although the risk is still high that compromise will be supplanted by ideological conviction. To get the bill through the Senate committee with Republican support, Democrats had to abandon an amendment that would have given gay and lesbian spouses of U.S. citizens the same immigration prospects as heterosexual spouses. Thus, basic equity was sacrificed for the presumably greater good of passing legislation to rationalize immigration laws and free some 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States from legal limbo. A Senate floor vote on the bill is expected in late June. Meanwhile, in the House, Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte complained that the Senate bill wouldn’t secure the border. We have previously written on the impossibility of attaining anything close to perfect security in a nation with 7,000 miles of land boundary and 95,000 miles of shoreline. Yet, for some conservatives the notion has become close to an obsession, all but impervious to facts on the ground. In a similar vein, the House risks transforming immigration reform into one more theater in its war against the Affordable Care Act. Many Republicans refuse to support legislation that doesn’t explicitly deny public funds to immigrants with provisional legal status. But in the event such people need emergency-room care, they will have to pay out of pocket. If they can’t afford the typically exorbitant
bills, their legal status could be jeopardized. A House group working on immigration reached a tentative deal on the problem last week, with specific language still to come. But the temptation to use health care as a means of scuttling an immigration bill may prove too powerful for others to resist. Similarly, a fight over the E-Verify employment verification system is also simmering. There’s one very good reason that immigration reform hasn’t collapsed – Democrats, including some who balked at the last immigration reform effort, and mainstream Republicans recognize that their self-interest is aligned with the national interest in passing a law. Even so, there is only so much ideological baggage a bill can carry. If House Republicans insist on creating legislation far to the right of the Senate bill, the hard-won compromise will erode. Preventing that unhappy future falls to Speaker John Boehner. In a Washington Post-ABC News poll released last week, large majorities of Democrats and independent voters supported a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants; only 42 percent of Republican voters did. The attitudes of Republican voters will no doubt be reflected by many Republican legislators, including some vocal opponents on the House Judiciary Committee. Boehner’s task is to facilitate debate while keeping the legislation from sinking under the ideological bugaboos that have rendered the House dysfunctional. Immigration reform may be the only meaningful legislation this House is capable of producing.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Is the NRA winning? To the Editor: With the polls showing a majority – in some cases, 90 percent – of the public favoring universal background checks, how is it possible that the Senate failed to pass the proposed bill? Is this lobby so powerful that it can stop reasonable efforts to reduce killings by guns? The vote in the Senate was 54 in favor and 46 opposed, a clear majority. Why then didn’t it pass? It failed because of an arcane rule in the Senate of the United States that allows a group of senators to filibuster a bill and block passage unless 60 vote in favor. This doesn’t appear too democratic, does it? It isn’t. In this case, the majority of Democrats voted in favor and only four Republicans. The majority of Republicans voted no. Thus, the minority succeeded in blocking the

will of the majority. The minority leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, led the charge blocking the will of the majority and public opinion. Public opinion polls show that many Republicans and gun owners are in favor of closing the onerous holes in the present system, where background checks are required when the gun is purchased at a store but not always at other places. Purchases online and at gun shows are currently exempt from this requirement, and then there are straw purchases. A straw purchase is when someone that can’t pass the checks has another party buy it for him. This is prevalent in the slums where gang members are involved and obviously helpful to criminals with a record. Fortunately, the struggle is not over. If we are ever able to pass common sense
legislation the public needs to become more involved. Five states have enacted strong gun-control laws, and others are considering action. A clear majority of the Senate voted in favor of universal background checks. The National Rifle Association seems to assume the public outcry will die down, and it will win out. If the past is any indication, just wait until another massacre occurs. The senators who voted no are in the cross hairs, since the vote polls have clearly shown they have lost favor in their states. The only way to change the laws is to show the politicians that the NRA has lost its power with the voters. Are congressmen and senators elected to protect the public or to uniformly block passage of any measures backed by the president? Edward Lynd Kendall Batavia

Traffic signal will be installed at Waubonsee Will be at site of fatal crash By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Work is expected to start in early August on the installation of a traffic signal at the north entrance to Waubonsee Community College’s Sugar Grove campus, where two WCC students were killed in a 2010 car crash. Ryan Sherrod, 18, and Brandon Utley, 19, both of North Aurora, were killed April 14, 2010, after Sherrod’s Chrysler was struck by an Allied Waste Services garbage truck on Route 47 at the north entrance. The project is expected to be done by this fall, said David Quillen, WCC’s executive vice president of finance and
operations. “I expect an operational light by November,” Quillen said Tuesday. He said the light’s installation has been a priority for the college. During the work, the intersection will remain open, Quillen said. The college has received federal highway safety funds that will pay for 90 percent of the project’s estimated $1.2 million cost, he said. The speed limit is 55 mph on that stretch of Route 47. In studying the intersection, IDOT found that the speed was appropriate. Since the crash, IDOT has installed intersection warning lights with flashing beacons for both northbound and southbound traffic.

KEEP UP ONLINE By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A team nicknamed the Saints supplied the first lineup to solve Bartlett right-hander Holly Pagan during the 4A softball postseason. Of course, agnosticism played little role in host St. Charles East’s 11-2 victory against the Hawks in a sectional semifinal on Tuesday. Assertiveness? We’re getting warmer. From Lexi Perez’s leadoff single to Olivia Lorenzini’s bases-clearing double to punctuate a six-run sixth, East spotted Pagan’s pitches early in counts and swung away. Pagan entered the game with four hits allowed in 13 playoff innings. She exited with the Hawks yielding to an attacking Saints team bound for Saturday’s sectional final. “All of us have been trained since we were so young to be aggressive and to be good, you know. To have that mentality that you’re a great hitter,” East first
4A St. Charles East Sectional Tuesday’s semifinal St. Charles East 11, Bartlett 2 Today’s semifinal Glenbard North vs. South Elgin, 4:30 p.m. Saturday’s championship game St. Charles East vs. today’s winner, 11 a.m. baseman Kate Peterburs said. “That’s what you’ve got to have is the mentality that you’re a great hitter.” East (30-5) will look to maintain that approach Saturday, when it is set to face the winner of today’s semifinal between Glenbard North and South Elgin. Couple that with another strong outing from junior ace Haley Beno, and the Saints like their chances at further program history. East captured its first regional crown since 2002 over the weekend. Bartlett (27-10) benefited from a pair of two-out errors to take its lone lead of the game in the first inning.
Pagan helped her own cause with a run-scoring bloop single that fell behind third base as the result of East miscommunication. Coach Kelly Horan’s ensuing “everybody in” mound conference eliminated any further mixed messages. After the defense recovered, Peterburs belted a two-run homer on the first pitch she saw to highlight a four-run first. “The first inning was a little shaky, but after that, we all zoned in and just focused on getting outs for Haley,” said third baseman Alex Latoria, who drove in four runs. “Because she was pitching a great game and getting ground balls.” Beno retired the final 10 Hawks in order after first baseman Alyssa Nowak’s solo home run with two outs in the fourth brought Bartlett to within 5-2. Commanding her dropcurve and an inside fastball that produced many swings and misses, Beno walked zero, struck out two and allowed three hits.
“I didn’t really let the home run get to me,” she said. “I just kept pitching, and I knew my defense would back me up.” Freshman left fielder Katie Kolb provided two strong catches in the late innings, including a grab of Bartlett RBI leader Kayla Haberstich’s drive to the warning track leading off the sixth. In the bottom half, East erupted for each of its runs with two outs, as Hawks coach Jim Wolfsmith thought a game Pagan “just succumbed” to a relentless Saints attack. Familiarity also helped East apply the finishing touches. Tess Hupe (RBI single), Lorenzini (three-run double) and Latoria (tworun homer) provided the big blows in the inning in consecutive at-bats. In the summer, that trio acts much more civilly to Pagan, a Homer Hawks travel teammate. “Yeah, we’re all good friends,” Latoria said. “It’s just always fun playing against each other.”

CLASS 3A BARRINGTON SUPERSECTIONAL: POSTPONED (RESUMES TODAY AT 6 P.M.)
Goals, lightning strike swiftly in Barrington By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – A supersectional match isn’t an ideal setting to learn a lesson the hard way, but that’s how matters played out for the St. Charles North girls soccer team Tuesday night. On the bright side, the North Stars have the chance today to make amends. The North Stars went ahead, 1-0, with 22:27 left in the first half against host Barrington as junior forward Sophie Pohl collected an Alex Gage feed in the box and beat Fillies goalkeeper Hannah Luedtke. It was a jubilant moment for the North Stars – perhaps too much so. Just eight seconds of match time later, after racing upfield following a quick restart, Barrington’s Jenna Szczesny deposited the tying goal into a wide-open net as North Stars goalkeeper Shelby Stitz and North’s defense seemed to be still in congratulatory
mode. “That’s never happened,” veteran North coach Ruth Vostal said. “I would love to look at the tape to see how that happened, if we were casual, but typically after a goal we’re not. We’re a little bit more focused. I would have to look at it and see.” The bizarre sequence was not easy for either team to put out of mind considering lightning postponed the match just a couple of minutes later. After a delay of about an hour, officials announced the match would be resumed at 6 p.m. today with the score tied, at 1, and 20:44 left to play in the first half. Vostal credited Szczesny for “an awesome play,” saying it’s the fastest she’s seen someone sprint upfield for a score. “We learn something from every goal, and luckily that wasn’t with 8 seconds left or something like that to go ahead, that kind of deal,” Vostal said. “We’ll take it now, we learn from it, and we’ll come back [today].”
North (19-3-1) dominated possession for the match’s first 20 minutes – encouraging for obvious reasons, but also frustrating considering the North Stars don’t have a lead to show for it. “Everyone makes mistakes,” Pohl said. “We’re just going to come back [today] stronger. I’m not mad. I’m totally confident we’ll get another one.” Barrington (17-4-1) seemed to have Pohl reasonably well marked on her goal but the towering junior still found a way to uncork one of her typically heavy-footed shots. “I had two girls on me,” Pohl said. “Honestly, I just took the hit and hoped it’d go in because we needed a goal.” They got one, but Pohl and her teammates would have preferred to have more time to enjoy it. The teams now will have to hope a dicey weather forecast for today cooperates so that the winner has at least one day of rest to gear up for Friday’s 3A state semifinal.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
BARTLETT BOYS VOLLEYBALL SECTIONAL: STC NORTH DEF. LAKE PARK, 2-0 (25-17, 25-18)
Finishing strong
HALEY BENO
STC North heads to its first state quarterfinal By MICHAEL GIBBS editorial@kcchronicle.com BARTLETT – The St. Charles North boys volleyball team proved it knows how to finish games strong, and as a result the North Stars are heading to their first state quarterfinal in the program’s history. The top-seeded North Stars scored the final seven points of Game 1 and six of the last seven in Game 2 en route to a 25-17, 25-18 victory on Tuesday against Lake Park in the Bartlett Sectional final. North (30-6) advanced to face Oak Park-River Forest in state quarterfinal action at 6 p.m. Friday at Hoffman Estates. The semifinals and final will be Saturday. No. 2 seeded Lake Park ends its season 25-13. “Lake Park is an outstanding team that beat us earlier this season,” said North’s Jack Harbaugh, who had three kills. “We were able to key on their hitters and close out both games. We came out fired up and held nothing back.” In Game 1, North only led 18-17, but shut out the Lancers the rest of the way, led by a kill from Kevin Beach and two from Zach Ziesmer. In the second game, Lark Park led, 2-1, but it was all North from that point on, as the North Stars never trailed again.
Bartlett Sectional Friday’s semifinals St. Charles North 2, Wheaton North 0 (27-25, 25-20) Lake Park 2, St. Charles East 0 (25-15, 25-17) Tuesday’s championship St. Charles North 2, Lake Park 0 (25-17, 25-18) Ahead, 19-17, the North Stars scored five straight points, led by a Ziesmer kill, a block from Harbaugh and another point from Harbaugh. After a Lake Park point at 24-17 held off elimination – briefly – the Lancers missed a serve and North’s players and coaches celebrated the sectional title with their fans, who stormed the court. “We talked about a couple of things in ‘ourgame plan:’ reading the ball, reading the setter, going out there trying to block and play good defense,” North coach Todd Weimer said. “The other thing was to serve tough, and we did a nice job. “We executed the game plan to a T. We stayed calm. The guys were really focused.” Weimer said North’s 12 seniors compared to one for Lake Park made a difference in the game. “[Our] seniors have been through this before; they have the experience,” Weimer said. “They know what it is like.
That goes a long, long way. “You can see [the difference in experience] a little bit. There was a ball that hit the floor that nobody [from Lake Park] went for. “We preached defense wins championships. That was evident tonight. We kept going for every single ball.” Lake Park coach Tim Murphy tried to downplay the experience difference, instead giving credit to North. “You could look it at that way, that we had less experience” he said. “But I told the guys before the game, we need to win the serve battle, we need to win the serve-receive battle. If we execute both those facets better than St. Charles North, we’ll win the match. “But they beat us on serve and serve-receive. On top of that, we made a lot of hitting errors.” The win also means Weimer will have to allow his players to get mohawks before Friday’s game, because of a promise he made to them earlier in the postseason. And if the North Stars win the state title, Weimer promised to join the hair affair. Jonathan Orech led North with nine digs, six kills and two aces, while Beach had nine digs, six kills and an ace. Ziesmer contributed four kills and three blocks, and Ryan Dal Degan had 17 digs.
St. Charles East • Junior • Softball Why Beno was selected: Beno earned victories against Glenbard West, Conant and Bartlett to send the Saints into Saturday’s 4A St. Charles East Sectional final. St. Charles East right-hander Haley Beno recovered from an unearned run in the first inning of Tuesday’s 4A STCE Sectional softball semifinal to help the Saints into Saturday’s championship game. Beno continued a season-long surge that saw her play a key role in the Saints’ 18-game winning streak earlier this season, a run that went a long way toward East gaining the top sectional seed. Beno, the St. Charles Bank & TrustKane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, caught up with the Chronicle’s Kevin Druley about her accomplishments. The following is an edited transcript:
What’s been constant for you in the postseason? I feel like my defense is playing so well behind me. Katie Kolb had, like, amazing catches out there [Tuesday], and that’s nice to know pitching-wise. Who called the first-inning conference to settle things down against Bartlett? Coach [Kelly Horan] called it. We knew we had to get it together, and we did. I knew that everyone would pick it up. What have you and your teammates said to baseball players about both hosting sectionals this week? We’re going to go support them [today], so it was nice to see them out here [Tuesday].

Wheaton Academy announces Pete Froedden as Ferguson’s replacement PREP ZONE Jay Schwab I figured out fairly quickly that I missed being a head coach, and I missed having an opportunity to have a vision for a program and set that direction,” Froedden said. Froedden said Wheaton Academy athletic director Andrew Tink reached out to him to discuss the Warriors’ opening. “We cast a wide net,” Tink said. “We contacted college coaches across the country, particularly targeting programs that we’re familiar with and programs that are Christian schools, so Pete was one of those college coaches at a Christian school that I reached out to.” On a personal level, the timing was right for Froedden to make a major change. One
of his three children, daughter Kiana, just graduated from high school in Tennessee, and Froedden also was looking for an established, quality program where he could coach his son, Christian, for his junior and senior seasons. Plus, former Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson resigned his post in April. “I think the whole gamut of how I felt about the college scene compared to being a head Pete Froedden coach at high school and Christian and Kiana, kind of all of it all wrapped up into one, I thought it was an ideal time for my family to be able to make the move,” Froedden said. Christian Froedden will be a 6-foot-3 junior wing player who already has two seasons of varsity basketball under

his belt. He should fit in nicely with a formidable core of Wheaton Academy returnees that is expected to also include Division I post prospect Gordon Behr and state 3-point shooting champion Josh Ruggles. “He’s got to get stronger, got to get a little tougher but he has a real good skill set, and he has a chance to be a nice player,” Froedden said of his son. Lipscomb is located in Nashville, and Tennessee has been home base for Froedden well beyond his playing days at Lipscomb (1987-1991). He plans to relocate northward this week and start laying groundwork for the Warriors’ summer program, but it will be a few months before he needs to steel himself for his first Chicago winter. “It’s probably good that I visited a week and a half, two weeks ago, when the weather was like 82 [rather than] when
it’s below 2,” Froedden said. “I don’t have any reservations about that kind of stuff. I knew this was going to be the year I was going to go back into high school. “I had some other opportunities, actually had three other opportunities I was looking at when [Wheaton Academy] and I began to talk. I knew I was going to be a head coach, it was just a matter of where.” Coming soon: Wheaton Academy also has a football coaching job to fill in the aftermath of former coach T.J. Ragan’s departure after one season. Tink said an announcement on the football vacancy could be coming within the next week.

QUAD CITIES 7, COUGARS 5
Hawks embrace rare Game 7 Cougars downed in By TOM MUSICK tmusick@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – It doesn’t get any bigger than this. “Absolutely,” Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said with a smile. “Big fan,” Hawks goaltender Corey Crawford agreed. “It’s exciting,” said Hawks defenseman Duncan Keith, a seasoned veteran on the subject. “It’s great. I went to their concert the last time they came in ’06, I think it was.” Wait. What was the question? Leave it to the Rolling Stones to match (or perhaps exceed) the hype of a decisive Game 7 between the Hawks and Detroit Red Wings for the right to go to the Western Conference finals. The Stones invaded the United Center on Tuesday for the first of three shows in a week, but the Hawks didn’t mind sharing
their building on the eve of their biggest game yet. “We weren’t going to skate, anyways,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. Good idea. Save those legs for Game 7. Save those legs for a winner-take-all, up-forgrabs, for-all-the-marbles, this-is-what-makes-sports-sogreat Game 7. Welcome to Christmas morning, Hawks fans. No, I take that back. Christmas morning arrives every year. The same cannot be said for the Hawks in a Game 7. This will mark only the 11th Game 7 in franchise history for the Hawks, who have posted a 5-5 record in their previous Game 7s, including a 4-2 mark on home ice. Not since 1995 have the Hawks hosted a Game 7, when they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-2, to advance to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Scanning the Hawks’ history books is fun, but the most important Game 7 statistic is one. That’s the amount of Game 7 experiences for most players on the Hawks. The result: A gut-wrenching 2-1 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks in 2011. Toews remembered the adrenaline leading into that game and the emptiness that followed. He said the experience should help the Hawks this time around. “It’s something about playing a Game 7,” Toews said, “that you want to go out there and you feel like every shift, every chance you get, there might be an opportunity to change the game in favor of your team. And you’re ready for that.” • Shaw Media sports columnist Tom Musick can be reached at tmusick@shawmedia.com and on Twitter @ tcmusick.
rain-shortened action FOR KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE DAVENPORT, Iowa – With just five and a half innings being played because of stormy conditions, the Kane County Cougars were defeated by the Quad Cities River Bandits, 7-5, on Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Teoscar Hernandez led off the bottom of the first by walking against starter Dillon Maples (0-1). Hernandez advanced to second on a wild pitch before stealing third and scoring on an error by catcher Willson Contreras. Two batters later, Jonathan Singleton crushed a home run to left-center, putting the River Bandits (28-23) up by two. Daniel Minor coughed the lead up in the top of the third as David Bote walked before Oliver Zapata reached on a bunt base hit to put the first
two men on in the inning for the Cougars (24-26). Pin-Chieh Chen evened the score as he tripled down the right-field line to drive in Bote and Zapata. Quad Cities reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third with RBI singles from Carlos Correa and Singleton. They scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth as Maples walked the bases loaded before exiting in favor of Lendy Castillo. Castillo surrendered a two-run double to Correa and a sacrifice fly to Miles Hamblin. Dan Vogelbach hit a threerun homer in the fifth off Richard Rodriguez (1-0) to pull the Cougars within two, but they were held silent through the rest of the fifth and the sixth against Lance McCullers, who earned his first save, before the rain started to pour down.

Fortunately for the Wheaton Academy boys basketball program, the high school/ college coaching carousel can be a two-way street. After the Warriors lost their accomplished coach, Paul Ferguson, to become an assistant coach at Wheaton College, the school announced Tuesday it has lured Lipscomb University men’s basketball assistant coach Pete Froedden as Ferguson’s replacement. Froedden took the assistant coaching position at Division-I Lipscomb, his alma mater, where he has coached for the past five seasons, after previously coaching 14 years in the high school ranks in Tennessee. “I just thought in order not to have regrets I needed to try [college coaching], something I hadn’t done, and I had an opportunity to do it, and so I did it for the last five years, but in the past two or three years,

WHITE SOX NOTES
Konerko hopes to watch Hawks By MEGHAN MONTEMURRO mmontemurro@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko is a baseball player first and foremost. But Konerko is also an avid hockey fan and played the sport until he was about 16 years old. Konerko said it’s been a dream of his to attend a Game 7, and thanks to a friend, he secured Blackhawks tickets for tonight’s Game 7 against the Detroit Red Wings. The Sox’s game at Wrigley Field against the Cubs starts at 1:20 p.m., which should give Konerko plenty of time to get to the United Center before the puck drops. However, rain is in the forecast. “Hopefully, we don’t do anything stupid like have an extra-inning game or any rain delays [today],” Konerko said. “Let’s keep our fingers
crossed there.”
Jones’ rough stretch: Reliever Nate Jones would prefer to forget about his past 10 outings. Jones, who was excellent out of the bullpen during his rookie season last year, hasn’t come close to replicating his success. The 27-yearold right-hander has allowed 17 runs (15 earned) in 13 1/3 innings in his previous 10 appearances resulting in a 10.31 ERA. “I feel good every time I go out there,” Jones said. “It’s just this year running into bad luck. Also again, we’re pitching against big league teams. They’re going to hit the ball.” Manager Robin Ventura said Jones will get an opportunity to fix his problems, but Jones’ ineffectiveness takes away a late-inning option until he figures out how to hit his locations.

CUBS NOTES
Cubs seek consistency from Samardzija By MEGHAN MONTEMURRO mmontemurro@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Cubs manager Dale Sveum knows what he will get from pitcher Jeff Samardzija in big games – a bigtime performance. Samardzija stepped up against the White Sox on Monday with a two-hit, complete-game shutout, though afterward the right-hander admitted he sometimes struggles to get amped for less important games. “Big games, forget about it, his great stuff is showing up, but then not so much that next outing,” Sveum said. “That’s what you have to be wary of sometimes.” Sveum said Samardzija’s change in mental approach could be part of the matura-
tion process, but the game also has a way of humbling players. “You have to figure it out and do something different to get yourself in that same atmosphere all the time,” Sveum said.
Borbon earning playing time: Since joining the Cubs in April after getting picked up off the waiver wire, outfielder Julio Borbon has done a little bit of everything when in the lineup. Sveum started Borbon in center field for a second straight game and the 27-yearold left-handed hitter has provided a boost when he’s been given playing time. Entering Tuesday’s game against the Sox, Borbon had hit .333 in his past five games with a home run and two RBIs.

‘Bert Stern: Original Mad Man,’ a film about a photographer undone by vices By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Hearing acclaimed photographer Bert Stern recount his attempt to bed Marilyn Monroe should be captivating, if admittedly lurid, stuff. And yet, there’s something about the octogenarian womanizer’s languorous tone that makes even sensational tabloid fodder sound banal. The artist’s anecdotes, not to mention his brilliance, are tempered in Shannah Laumeister’s problematic portrait of a man who produced countless recognizable images but struggled with addictions to drugs and women. “Bert Stern: Original Mad Man” has the familiar troubled-artist trajectory. He grew up poor in Brooklyn, propelled himself to fame but was ultimately undone by vices, especially a taste for amphetamines. Kicking that bad habit, the photographer has enjoyed a bit of a comeback later in life. His career was kickstarted by Smirnoff Vodka ad photos. At a time when advertising was generally prosaic – a housewife holding a bar of soap, maybe – Stern injected high concept art into the ad industry. From there, he went on to direct an acclaimed documentary, “Jazz on a Summer’s Day,” work for Vogue, capture Twiggy, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren and shoot the iconic poster for Stanley Kubrick’s “Lolita,” featuring actress Sue Lyon in heart-rimmed shades, mouth around a lollipop. Stern also photographed
Wikipedia photo
Photographer Bert Stern photographed Marilyn Monroe months before her death. Monroe’s “Last Sitting,” images taken months before her death, featuring the nude bombshell stretched across a bed. Even as Stern’s star was on the rise, his personal life was a mess, likely because, as the photographer admits, making photographs and making love were closely related in his mind. He tended to start relationships with his subjects, even during his two marriages. His second wife,
ballerina and Balanchine muse Allegra Kent, was the love of his life, he says somewhat dispassionately. But drugs and infidelity destroyed their union. (For her part, Kent unsentimentally refers to Stern as the sperm donor for her three children.) Although Stern appears in front of the camera, there is some sense that he is directing the film. His uninterested tone is by far the most prominent voice, and even though he
recounts sordid or personal tales of sex and love, the film never feels especially intimate. Laumeister, four decades Stern’s junior, turns out to be the photographer’s muse and mentee, which explains why Stern might remain in control. It also becomes clear over the course of the film that the pair have some kind of relationship, although Stern says frankly that Kent and Monroe were the only women to ever interest him. Once Laumeister introduces herself to the audience, she attempts to find a balance as both director and supporting player, but it doesn’t work. Full disclosure of their history seems necessary, but seeing Stern’s nude portraits of the director feels more like navel-gazing, both literally and figuratively. Even the soundtrack, which includes a lot of sultry saxophone music, starts to sound kind of icky, especially after an interviewee says that Stern was the perfect person for the “Lolita” assignment because “he could see the woman in the little girl.” It’s perplexing that a man famous for his passion for art and women comes across with such a muted demeanor on camera. His seeming indifference is infectious. His lows never seem sad enough to make the film a tragedy, and his comeback isn’t decisive enough to make the documentary triumphant.

Confused teen regrets having sex Dear Abby: I’m a 14-year-old girl who recently had sex with my boyfriend. It was the first time for both of us. A week and a half later, we had a big fight. Another problem is I am having a lot of feelings for his best friend, and he has feelings for me, too. I don’t want to tell my boyfriend because I love him and don’t want to lose him. I also don’t want to ruin his friendship with the other guy. My boyfriend wants to have sex again, but I don’t. I wish I could take it back. What can I do? – Lost And Confused Dear Lost And Confused: Because you had sex once does not mean you are compelled to do it again. Feeling as you do about the best friend is a strong sign that as much as you care for your boyfriend, you are not in love with him. If you are being pressured to have sex, it’s important for YOUR sake that you tell your boyfriend you feel it happened too soon, you’re sorry you did it, and you
DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips have decided to wait until you are older to start again. It would be an intelligent move for you because your affections appear to be all over the map right now. Dear Abby: My friend is a compulsive talker. “Chatty Cathy” draws detailed descriptions of people I don’t know and don’t care about and lingers over past and current tribulations. I tolerate her behavior because she’s a kind person, but she is oblivious to how much she dominates a conversation. It’s like something compels her to fill every silence with monologue. Her personal and work relationships suffer because of it. It’s hard for her to hold a job, and she often becomes upset over this co-worker’s or that family member’s behavior. It is always the other person’s failure, yet
she is always in the center of the commotion. If I try to send subtle cues of uninterest, she doesn’t pick up on them and keeps talking and talking. I feel sorry for her. Is there anything I can do to help her, without seeming critical? – Exhausted Listener In Hawaii Dear Exhausted: Not knowing your friend, I can only guess what drives her to talk compulsively. Some people do it because they feel the need to prove to others how smart they are. Others do it out of nervousness or insecurity because they are uncomfortable with silence – even if it is a momentary pause in conversation. Because her behavior has had a negative impact on her employability, the next time she mentions problems at work, it would be a kindness to suggest to her that, because it’s happening repeatedly, she discuss it with a psychologist. That’s not hurtful; it’s helpful. • Write Dear Abby at www. dearabby.com.
Alternative treatments for sleep apnea offer comfort Dear Doctor K: I have sleep apnea. My doctor has urged me to use a CPAP machine, but it’s too uncomfortable. Are there other options? Dear Reader: Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops or becomes shallower many times each night. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when your upper airway collapses or gets blocked during sleep. These airway obstructions starve your brain of oxygen and stress your cardiovascular system. Untreated sleep apnea increases your risk of high blood pressure, stroke and premature death. OSA can be treated with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. A CPAP machine keeps your airways open as you sleep by delivering continuous air pressure through a mask worn over your nose and mouth. But many people find it uncomfortable, and as a result, they use CPAP inconsistently – or not at all. Some new treatments may provide more comfortable alternatives. Discuss the pros and cons of these options with your doctor: • APAP is an “autotitrating” version of positive airway pressure (PAP). It continuously adjusts the pressure in your airway as your needs fluctuate during the
ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff night. • Custom-made mouthpieces slide your jaw forward to keep your airway open. They are called “mandibular advancement systems,” or “MAS” for short. In recent years, studies have shown that MAS devices really work – and nearly as well as CPAP and APAP. For people who cannot tolerate CPAP, these devices can be valuable. • Another device called Oral Pressure Therapy creates a negative pressure that “sucks” the tissues in the back of your throat forward, preventing the collapse of the upper airway. This device is approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration, and received recognition in the 2012 Wall Street Journal Technology Awards, for which I have served as a judge. • Expiratory pressure resistance valves are disposable devices that stick to your nostrils. The valves force your own breathing to pressurize your airway and hold it open. These devices have not yet been as carefully studied as the MAS devices.
You should also talk to your doctor about medications you’re taking. Medications can help or hinder sleep apnea. For example, narcotic painkillers, sedatives and muscle relaxants can worsen sleep apnea. On the other hand, a sleep drug might help when you’re first getting used to a treatment device. Lifestyle changes can also help. If your sleep apnea occurs only when you sleep on your back, switch to sleeping on your side. Try losing weight, which almost always reduces the severity of apnea. In some people, it eliminates the problem altogether. Finally, limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol may make you sleepy, but it can worsen your sleep apnea symptoms. When a person’s obstructive sleep apnea is caused by very enlarged tonsils, surgery (tonsillectomy) can cure the condition. However, it is unusual for there to be such a correctable cause of sleep apnea. If you do decide to try a treatment device, remember that it works only if you use it.

Teen can’t get rid of acne Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and have a mild complexion problem, but it seems to be getting worse. I wash my face several times a day, and I’ve totally eliminated greasy junk food from my diet, but my complexion hasn’t improved. Is it possible that I have acne, and if so, what caused it, and how do I get rid of it? Is it possible that my complexion will improve by itself? – Rick, Tacoma, Wash. Dear Rick: I receive thousands of letters from teens asking for advice on many subjects. Complexion problems are always important to teens, and I try to answer as many questions in my column as I can without boring the regular readers, but I know that many new readers have not had the opportunity to learn some of the facts about skin problems, mainly acne. I’m well aware that complexion problems can leave both emotional and physical scars if not treated properly. I’ve had the pleasure to meet and discuss complexion problems with southern California dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey Lauber. He is licensed and board approved and attends to many teens who have skin problems. According to Dr. Lauber, acne is the term for pimples and complexion problems that trouble many young people and is only a skin problem and has nothing to do with a person’s general health. Acne is caused by the oil glands of the skin breaking open. At puberty, the oil glands in the skin start producing an oily material called sebum, which is discharged onto the skin’s surface. Sometimes the wall of the oil gland breaks and spills the sebum within the skin. The sebum irritates the skin tissues
’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace and causes redness, swelling and pus – in other words, a pimple. In mild cases only a few oil glands break open; in severe acne, many do. Acne runs in families. It’s impossible to prevent acne, since there is no way of changing one’s oil glands. Dirt does not cause acne, despite what you may have been told. The oil on the skin’s surface does no harm. Special soaps, astringents and acne cleansers are a waste of money. Wash your face with ordinary soap and water only as much as you need to keep it clean. Too much washing and scrubbing can cause skin irritation. Do not pick, squeeze or otherwise manipulate your pimples; it can leave scars. Foods do not cause acne. Many persons try all sorts of diets and are frustrated because they don’t help. In some people, certain foods do make acne worse. The most common ones are chocolate, nuts and cola drinks. A few people who drink large quantities of milk (more than a quart daily) find that this worsens their acne. Aggravation of acne by food varies from person to person. Unfortunately, there is no medical miracle to prevent acne, but it can be controlled by proper medical treatment. In recent years, several effective antibiotics have been developed. Whenever a teen feels uncomfortable about his or her complexion, it is a signal that a trip to a dermatologist is a must! • Email Dr. Robert Wallace at rwallace@ galesburg.net.

CELEBRITY CIPHER
For the last two days, we have looked at responder’s inviting game with 5-4 in the majors opposite a one-no-trump opening bid. What does he do with game-forcing values? The best method is the Smolen convention. Responder bids two clubs, Stayman. If the opener shows a four-card major, responder raises to game in that suit. But if the opener rebids two diamonds, the responder jumps to three of his four-card major. In this way, if they have a 5-3 major-suit fit, the opener becomes the declarer – as in today’s deal. (Three no-trump would have been fine here, but if North had, say, a singleton diamond, the weakness in that suit might have been fatal.) West leads the diamond king against four hearts. How should South plan the play? Note that if North is the declarer in four hearts, the diamond-10 lead from East, a likely choice, would be lethal. The defenders would get one heart, two diamonds and one club. In contrast, when South is the declarer, he is in control as long as he ducks the first trick, executing a Bath Coup. What can West do next? A trump shift is best. If declarer tries the finesse, he goes down because East wins and leads back a diamond. But South, anticipating that scenario, should win with dummy’s ace and call for the club five. If East takes the trick and plays a diamond, South wins, throws dummy’s last diamond on a high club, and works on trumps to take two spades, four hearts, one diamond and three clubs. Or if East ducks the club, declarer wins and returns a club, discarding a diamond from the dummy.
