Lincoln connection Dr. Richard J. Patterson and a
BTR
BATAVIA – Bellevue Place has quite the reputation. Most notably associated with Mary Todd Lincoln’s court-ordered sanitarium stay, the Greek Revival-style building that now stands as an apartment complex once served as Batavia’s first high school, helped lay the foundation of the Batavia Public Library and sheltered unwed mothers. The historical relevance of Bellevue Place landed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was built in 1854 at the west end of Union Avenue in Batavia as a private boarding high school called Batavia Institute. Using locally-quarried limestone, it cost $15,000, and was the first school for area high school youth. “At the time there really weren’t high schools in Illinois,” said George Scheetz, director of the Batavia Public Library. “There wasn’t public funding for anything like that, so you’d have private institutions here and there.” Shortly after Batavia Institute opened, the state mandated each community provide a public high school. “After the law passed, not too many people were enrolling in private schools when they could have a free education at a public school,” said Chris Winter, curator of the Batavia Depot Museum. But before closing in 1867, two of Batavia Institute’s literary societies – the Lyceum Association for men and the Sigournean Society for women – apparently laid the groundwork for what would become Batavia Public Library. Scheetz came across the connection through old meeting minutes and newspaper articles gathered by a predecessor. “It was a very grassroots-type of movement,” Scheetz said. “It was really the local families that started the library, and every indication is that these young people were students of the Batavia Institute.” Early stages of the library began in 1866, when the men’s group offered the women’s group $10 for book-borrowing privileges, Scheetz said. That served as a catalyst in the creation of the Batavia Library Association in 1867. A lifetime membership cost $5, and an annual tax was used to purchase books.

Remnants of Mary Todd Lincoln’s stay at Bellevue Place include her bed and dresser, which are on display at the Batavia Depot Museum, 155 Houston St., Batavia. handful of others bought Batavia Institute in 1867, renamed it Bellevue Place and converted the 16-acre estate into a mental hospital for women. In the early 1870s, two-story wings were added to accommodate 25 to 30 women at a time. The grounds included a greenhouse, orchards, a vegetable garden, a laundry facility, stables, and smoke and ice houses. All fell in line with Patterson’s philosophy that peace, quiet and an escape from city living served as the antidote for mental illness. Mayor Jeff D. Schielke, a sixth-generation Batavian and co-author of “John Gustafson’s Historic Batavia,” said at that time there was a high demand for sanitariums because a number of women were deemed mentally ill because of the loss of loved ones in the Civil War. That included Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife of the late President Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln’s assas-
sination, her son Robert had her declared insane, and she arrived at the Batavia sanitarium in May 1875. Mary Todd stayed on the second floor of Bellevue Place in a suite that cost $10 a day, according to the Batavia Depot Museum website. Her summerlong commitment remains a point of contention, as there are many opinions as to whether having her committed was the right thing to do. Witnessing her husband’s assassination and the death of three of her four children led some to believe her mental instability was caused by emotional distress. “I think she was [dealing with] tremendous grief. I think it’s totally understandable what happened and that she needed mental support,” Schielke said. Winter referred to the book “The Madness of Mary Lincoln,” by Jason Emerson, in which the author con-
sulted with several psychiatrists who determined that “in today’s time, Mary Todd would probably have been diagnosed as bipolar,” Winter said. Mounting national public pressure about her confinement led to Mary Todd’s release in September of the same year. Remnants of Mary Todd’s visit to the asylum – including a patient ledger, her insanity verdict, and the bed and dresser from her room – are on display at the Batavia Depot Museum. “I think it’s the Lincoln connection that really gives Bellevue Place that aura that it has,” Scheetz said. “People are so fascinated with everything about Lincoln ... even if it’s a squirrely [connection]. She may have been in an insane asylum, but it’s our insane asylum.”

Continued from page 3 Home for unwed mothers Two years after the sanitarium closed in 1964, the building was turned into a residence for unwed pregnant women and renamed Fox Hill Home for Girls. The home’s history remains elusive. According to Scheetz, no records exist of the mothers who stayed there and a single, fake name was used for those who did. Schielke said he’s come across children who return to Bellevue Place as adults looking for their origins, only to hit a dead end. “I’ve dealt with four or five people who have showed up in Batavia in search of information about their birth mother, and most of them have had the last name of Smith,” Schielke said. “Most of the birth mothers’ names on the birth certificates were the same. Apparently, there was a basic name that was utilized for the mothers.” Schielke said those born to mothers of Fox Hill were often given up for adoption, and stringent adoption laws means there isn’t much available information as the mothers didn’t want to divulge what had happened.

An illustration of Bellevue Place is shown. It was done by artist John Dukes McKee. “They could lock up their birth in secrecy,” he said. A common theme he’s noticed from those he conferred with is they are grateful to have been adopted by loving parents. “It proved to be a blessing for them,” Schielke said. Fox Hill Home moved in the late 1970s because of the building’s deterioration.
Preservation apartments Bellevue Place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, but needed restoration to preserve its historical luster.

Schielke said turning the building into a facility with rental units was the only way to preserve it. Before the restoration, Schielke said evidence was found of three unsuccessful attempts to set the building on fire. By 1986, it had been converted into 14 rental units, and townhomes have been added over the years. “Hopefully, the building has been saved for future generations, and as long as it’s maintained and managed in a functional form then it should be there for a good number of years,” Schielke said.

distance, as neutrinos will pass through the earth. James Strait, director of the project, said neutrinos can travel through 100 million miles of lead and come out unscathed. He said their unique properties may give scientists a peek into places they may not be able to see. The U.S. Energy Department is providing $867 million to fund the project, and Fermilab still is recruiting funding partners, said Katie Yurkewicz, Fermilab communications director. She said $57 million has been spent in planning for the project so far.

FERMILAB – Fermilab scientists hope to learn more about the most abundant particles in the universe through a proposed project that would bring four new buildings to campus. The public was invited to Fermilab on May 23 to learn about the proposed Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment project, which would send a beam of neutrinos – particles with almost no mass that pass through many types of matter – straight through the earth to South Da-
kota. Construction of the new buildings near Kirk and Giese roads in Batavia could be underway as soon as 2015. One building would be about 40 feet and and 160 feet long, and would be near Kirk and Giese roads. That building would be connected to an underground hall about 200 feet below the Fermilab site. A 52-foot hill also would be constructed about 1,000 feet from Kirk Road to house part of the facility that would create the neutrinos. The project would send neutrinos from Batavia to Lead, S.D., and no tunnel will be needed to bridge the 800-mile

BATAVIA – Aldermen turned what is a normally routine reappointment of the city’s department heads into a debate about the process. In the end, aldermen approved Mayor Jeff Schielke’s annual list of department head reappointments, including Bill McGrath as city administrator, Peggy Colby as finance director and budget officer, Gary Schira as police chief, Randy Deicke as fire chief and Gary Holm as public works director. The
appointments were approved May 20. The appointments are effective through April 30, 2014. Fifth Ward Alderman Steve Vasilion voted “no.” “When I ran and was elected, there were a lot of people looking for change,” Vasilion said. “I would appreciate the time to evaluate the positions and get feedback on those who are exceptional and those who aren’t.” Vasilion, who was elected to the City Council in April, said his vote was “solely about the process, not about people.” Schielke can make

FLOATING IMAGES Older individuals sometimes notice spots and specks floating across their fields of vision, particularly when looking up at the sky or other solid-hued backgrounds. While these “floaters” may initially arouse concern, they are generally nothing to worry about. These floating thread-like fragments are actually strands of collagen (a protein) that commonly occur as a result of shrinkage of the “vitreous humor” (the gel-like substance inside the eye). As we age, the vitreous humor shrinks and the fine collagen fibers it contains become thread-like. Like clouds in the sky, they can block the light hitting the retina, thereby creating shadows that we see as floaters. No treatment is required, but sudden increases or sudden flashes of light should prompt immediate treatment. P.S. Floaters most often occur among people between the ages of 50 and 75, especially in very nearsighted individuals and cataract patients.

BATAVIA – An 81-year-old Batavia man died of his injuries after a two-car crash May 20 at Mill Street and Randall Road. Ralph Lowe, 81, of Batavia, was pronounced dead later that day at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Lowe was driving a 2000 Volvo westbound on Mill Street at 10:08 a.m. at the time of the crash. “According to several witnesses, he failed to stop at the red light at Mill Street and Randall Road,” Batavia Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said. Vincent Perna, 20, of South Elgin, was driving a 2003 Mercury Sable northbound on Randall Road when he struck Lowe’s car on the driver’s side, Mazza said. “He had no chance to stop,” Mazza said. “Mr. Lowe pulled out right in front of him.” No citations were immediately issued in the crash, Mazza said.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Lightning was the cause of a house fire that started in a Batavia subdivision May 22, said Deputy Chief Randy Banker with the Batavia Fire Department. Firefighters were called to the scene about 12:15 p.m. for a fire at a home in the 900
block of Ekman Drive in Batavia. Three passers-by called the fire in, Banker said. Fire officials initially suspected that lightning caused the blaze, and they confirmed that after an investigation. Banker said no one was home at the time of the fire. One firefighter later was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, likely related to being overheated, Banker said. The fire was contained to the roof and attic areas of the home, and Banker said
the home sustained a lot of smoke damage. Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours, but had the fire under control by about 12:45 p.m., he said. The estimated damage was about $200,000. Several area fire departments assisted Batavia firefighters at the scene, including Geneva, North Aurora, St. Charles and Fermilab. Fire departments from Elburn and West Chicago covered those fire stations while they were assisting at the scene.

As the flat-rate shipping boxes filled up, some students sat on the floor, trying to make everything fit. “To me, this is a super important thing,” teacher Meg Bingham said, handing the students more letters to put in their boxes. The service project shows them they can serve others, she said, and it teaches them others are making huge sacrifices for them. “They find value in it,” Bingham said.

Lyle will be remembered as a man who lived life to its fullest and commanded an unparalleled level of respect by all those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He was truly everybody's All-American. By those closest to him, Lyle will be remembered as someone who has imprinted countless indelible marks on all our souls. ST. CHARLES – Students at the Mades-Johnstone Center in St. Charles didn’t hesitate May 17 to tell Kathy Tobusch, co-chair of Fox Valley Troop Support, about their personal connections to the nation’s armed forces. Interrupting a conversation, one boy told her that his dad is expected to deploy to Afghanistan this summer. Tobusch – who was at the Mid-Valley Special Education Cooperative school to talk to students about care packages for soldiers – promised to send a package to the boy’s father. Tobusch, whose two sons have deployed to Iraq, said it was great that the students spent weeks collecting items for the soldiers and took time Friday to package them. “That shows they really care,” she said. The Royal Treatment…. We always said when we were ready to retire from work, but not from life, Oak Crest would be the place for us. Both of us were born and grew up in this area so coming home was Barry and Kay Schrader something we talked about for years. When the opportunity presented itself to sell our home in California and return to our roots, we didn’t have to think twice. We love life at Oak Crest in our wonderful duplex surrounded by good friends, family and beautiful scenery. We are glad we made the decision to move here while we are both independent. With easy access to educational programs, events, a state-of-the-art fitness center and delicious meals. We not only feel privileged, but blessed. We are enjoying all that Oak Crest has to offer. It was our honor to spend the last year as Oak Crest King and Queen. Guess when they say at Oak Crest you get the royal treatment, they mean it. Customers won’t go home hungry from Gabby’s By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, the cooks at Gabby’s Kitchen make as many dishes from scratch as they can, because they specialize in homestyle cooking. “We want all shifts to pop,” said Angelo Sellas, who manages the restaurant with his brother, John Sellas. The burgers are fresh and hand-packed, the soup is homemade every day, and they bread their own meats, onion rings and shrimp, Angelo Sellas said. One of the more popular entrees at Gabby’s Kitchen is the towering Moo & Oink Burger – a half-pound burger topped with slow-braised pulled pork, applewood smoked bacon and melted cheddar cheese, topped with a hefty onion ring. Diners have plenty of options for side dishes – 15, to be exact. Aside from traditional French fries, they offer sweet potato fries, tater tots, rice pilaf, creamy cole slaw and macaroni and cheese, to name a few. Chef Justyn Puchalski cooks up an Iowa Pork Tenderloin Sandwich – a heaping serving of breaded pork tenderloin that hangs over the bun. It is served in the same fashion as the Moo & Oink Burger, with a crispy onion ring topping the bun. “You’re not gonna go home hungry,” John Sellas said. “We’re trying to make something fresh and homemade,” Angelo Sellas said. “We stay away from as much process as possible.” Homemade desserts include Greek yogurt, cobblers and warm bread pudding. The building where Gabby’s Kitchen is located, 1650 W. Main St. in St. Charles, has been in the Sellas brothers’ family since

1985. They both have worked in the restaurant industry for many years, and Angelo Sellas said Gabby’s Kitchen is a conglomeration of their combined experience. They reopened the restaurant as Gabby’s Kitchen almost three years ago. Black-andwhite photos of the Sellas’ family members – as well as the family members of some of their customers – line the walls above each booth. Also on the walls are colorful chalkboards displaying specials that change monthly or seasonally. They have an omelet of the month, wings of the month, fish of the month and a burger of the month. For families on the go, the restaurant offers carry-out family packs that feed four or five people. That menu includes chicken Parmesan, southern-fried chicken and a chicken and ribs combo. The restaurant started catering about 1½ years ago, and is flexible as far as customization goes, Angelo Sellas said. They’ve done parties large and small, including weddings and military parties. Meagan Provencher fields questions about plants yearround. But around mid-May, one question in particular sprouts constantly, from a range of visitors to the Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles, where Provencher works as the senior landscape designer. “People want to know: Is it too late to plant?” Provencher said. “It’s the question I get more than any other this time of year. “And the answer is, there’s nothing that says to have your planting done by Mother’s Day or June 1 or any date. So many people believe it, but you can go all summer long.” As spring weather has warmed the air and the soil, it also has heated the desire of amateur home landscapers and gardeners to get outside and dig in the dirt. Managers at local garden centers, including Provencher at Wasco Nursery and Joe Heidgen, co-owner at Shady Hill Gardens in Elburn, said May consistently ranks as the busiest time of the year for their greenhouses and nurseries. “When the weather gets warm like this, I don’t know how many people might come through here on a weekend day,” Provencher said. “Hundreds? Thousands? All I know is, they just keep streaming on through here and it’s great.” Heidgen and Provencher said many of their customers are looking to jump on the trend of “container gardening,” which allows gardeners to plant flowers or vegetables in pots and boxes rather than in the ground. Heidgen said many of his customers are turning to container gardening to grow plants that are relatively easy to grow and save space. Provencher said perennial gardening also has become increasingly popular, and some homeowners seek flowering plants that blossom year after year. But others seem to have developed a flare for the exotic, Heidgen said, choosing tropi-

Warm, summerlike temperatures and sunny skies prompted some area residents to visit local nurseries and garden centers this weekend as the spring planting and growing season kicks into high gear.
Know more Want to know what you can do to succeed at your next gardening project? Meagan Provencher of the Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles, and Joe Heidgen of the Shady Hill Gardens near Elburn, offer some tips: • Don’t think it’s too late to plant. Did you run out of time to plant in May? No worries, Provencher said. “We plant from early spring to Christmas,” she said. “It can be done.” • Take the time to improve your soil. Heidgen recommended using compost, peat or other organic material to augment your dirt. He also recommended changing at least half of the soil in planting containers annually. “It can be boring, but it’s a lot of the determination in how it’s going to turn out,” he said. • Don’t overthink things. Don’t become too consumed with worry about pests or diseases. “I kill stuff all the time,” Provencher said. “Just take it and learn from it.” • Get dirty. hibiscus, mandevilla and papyrus grass. The gardening center managers also noted that last
year’s drought did not seem to discourage many people from planting again this year. Rather, it may have produced better educated and more determined gardeners. “Things that survived the drought and did well have also become popular,” Heidgen said. He said many gardeners, for instance, learned last year that if they kept up with watering, the heat produced bumper crops of tomatoes, squash and other backyard fruits and vegetables. At the Wasco Nursery recently, Brian Wiedenhoeft of Geneva said he intended to plant annual red and white petunias this year along the front of his home, as he has for years. He said the planting marks his only foray into gardening each year. “It really makes the front
of the house pop, you know?” Wiedenhoeft said. He said the petunias, while noticeably smaller, seemed to pull through last summer’s drought. And that reinforced his decision to plant them again this year. Others had more ambitious gardening and landscaping projects. Maureen and Ray Zmich of the Windings subdivision west of St. Charles said they were in the process of reclaiming a portion of their wooded lot that had become overrun with invasive weeds and shrubs. The work included clearing the invasive plants, creating trails with mulch and stone, and replanting other, more desirous flowers and other plants. “We were out all morning,” Maureen said. “And we just ran out of plants.”

Aurora’s RiverEdge Park to offer summer of music, events By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – The city of lights soon will become the city of music. Aurora’s new outdoor entertainment venue – RiverEdge Park – will kick off its inaugural season Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, with the 17th annual Blues on the Fox festival, which will feature acts such as Chicago’s own Buddy Guy, Dr. John, JJ Grey & Mofro, The Stone Foxes, Tommy Castro and The Painkillers and Robert Randolph and The Family Band. Area press, including the Kane County Chronicle, recently were given a behindthe-scenes look at the $13 million venue, which has a capacity of between 8,500 and 10,500 people. From Monday, June 3, to Sunday, June 9, RiverEdge Park will hold public tours of the facility. More information is available by visiting www.River EdgeAurora.com. RiverEdge Park is anchored by the John C. Dunham performance pavilion, which boasts state-of-the art acoustics. “You feel like you are surrounded by sound,” said RiverEdge Park architect David Steele, of Chicago-based Muller + Muller architectural firm. Living up to its name, RiverEdge Park is along the Fox River at 360 N. Broadway Ave. near downtown Aurora and across from the Metra station. A sound wall was built to block noise coming from the street. The venue’s architects drew inspiration from Milwaukee’s popular Summerfest in constructing the venue’s plywood stage. “Plywood has a nice spring, a nice sound,” Steele said. Two Brothers Roundhouse, which is directly across the street from RiverEdge Park, is the park’s official food vendor and also will sell Two Brothers’ craft beers. In addition, 10 to 12 local restaurants will serve a variety of food at the park. Tim Rater, president and CEO of the Aurora Civic Authority, said he hopes RiverEdge Park will boost Aurora’s profile as a growing and vibrant destination for live entertainment. RiverEdge Park

Loretta Lynn, Randy Travis, B.B. King and Peter Frampton are among the other artists set to perform this summer at RiverEdge Park. More artists will be announced in coming

RiverEdge Park is the centerpiece in a 10-year master plan for the city of Aurora. Future plans include building a pedestrian bridge to connect the east and west sides of the Fox River. State Street prepares for ‘Don Quixote’ SHAW MEDIA GENEVA – State Street Dance Studio, 9. N. Fourth St., Geneva, is gearing up for its annual studio show. This year, State Street will present the full-length ballet, “Don Quixote,” on Sunday, June 9, at The Paramount Theatre in Aurora. Students from the studio’s ballet training program, along

The story is about a middle-age man from the country who sets out to find his love, only to mistake her for anoth-
er beauty in the village. “Don” was first presented by the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, Russia on Dec. 26, 1869. The performance will include several guest artists from the surrounding Chicago area. Tickets are available by calling State Street Dance Studio at 630-232-0444. SPORTS&REC Olympians offer swimming tips to St. Charles group By ASHLEY RHODEBECK
On the Web
arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Standing in front of about 80 members of the St. Charles Swim Team on May 26, two-time Olympic silver medalist Christine Magnuson told them she started from similar beginnings. “Your coaches are probably better than mine growing up,” the Tinley Park native said. Magnuson and fellow Olympian Adam Brown gave the young athletes tips in and out of the pool during a clinic at the St. Charles East High School campus. They worked with about 120 swimmers in a younger age group May 25. Swim team co-head coach Jon Cabel said kids need to hear about sacrifices, struggles and goals, so it’s great when they get a chance to learn from an athlete who has

Magnuson, who earned her medals at the Beijing Olympics, and Brown, who represented Great Britain in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olym-
pics, said they enjoy leading such clinics. “It reminds you where you came from,” Magnuson said between taking pictures with the teens. “I came from a program just like theirs.” Brown said he loves to help
and inspire the next generation of swimmers and to give back to the sport. Although he and Magnuson are Olympians, he said, they don’t do anything special or out of the ordinary. They simply try to perfect the basics, he said, adding he feels joy when he sees kids focus on what he’s trying to teach them. “They inspire us to work harder in our own training,” Magnuson said. Fifteen-year-old Johnny Tarpey of St. Charles and 17-year-old Taylor Falk of Batavia said they appreciated the opportunity to learn
new techniques. “It’s always the little things that can change your stroke,” Falk said. Before entering the pool at the Norris Recreation Center, the young swimmers met the Olympians in East’s gym. Magnuson and Brown shared their paths to the Olympics and answered questions, which addressed superstitions, eating habits and – among other topics – overcoming disappointment. Magnuson said failure can be hard if winning is your only goal. For her, she said, earning medals is not the endgame. “I do it because I love the sport,” she said. Brown offered similar advice. He told the swimmers not to put too much pressure on themselves to perform. “Swimming’s all about having fun,” he said.

THE SCIENCE OF
19
KIDZ BUZZ |
hen the weather gets dark and gloomy on a warm afternoon, big storm clouds roll in and the sky turns an unusual color, there might be a tornado on the way. Tornadoes are violent storms that begin in a thunderstorm and extend all the way to the ground. They have strong winds that often (but not always) form a funnel shape, and can destroy many buildings, cars and trees in their path. Tornadoes form when a warm and moist pocket of air runs into a cold and dry front. When the two meet, they can cause the atmosphere to become unstable. If strong winds meet this unstable atmosphere, it can spin the storm into a tube formation, called a funnel cloud. Once the funnel cloud forms, it can be very dangerous. There is normally a warning when a tornado is on the way. You will often hear a tornado siren in your town if conditions are right for a tornado to form. If you are watching TV or listening to the radio, you will also hear a warning. Tornadoes are also very, very loud. You will often hear the sound of a tornado coming — like a loud train going by — before you see it. If a tornado is on the way, you need to move very quickly to make yourself safe. Here are a few things to remember: ! Avoid windows. If a window breaks, you want to be away from the glass. ! Go to the basement: Basements are often the safest place to be in a tornado. If you don’t have a basement, get on the lowest floor of the building away from windows. ! Protect yourself: Get under a heavy table, cover yourself with a mattress or crouch on the floor with your head covered in a safe place. ! At school: Follow the drill! Know what the plan is for a tornado at school. Listen to your teachers’ instructions, and keep calm and quiet. — By Anne Raih, More Content Now

Staging advice Many of the most effective staging tips are also inexpensive. Nothing turns off buyers faster than a dirty house. Before you list your house, give it a thorough top-to-bottom cleaning. Painting is one of the cheapest, easiest ways to help your home look fresh and great. Choose neutral colors.

Keep grass looking its best To maintain a lovely lawn, the experts at Lowe’s offer these tips: n Most lawns will grow well with about 1 inch of water a week. Water in the early morning, so the sun will help dry the grass. Nighttime watering can result in prolonged moisture on the blades and can open the door to disease. n how do you know if you’re watering enough? Try the “soup can test.” Set an empty can next to your lawn sprinkler. When there’s about a half-inch of water in the can, it’s time to turn off the sprinkler. n When you’re mowing, never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade. Leaving the grass longer encourages a deeper root system. To better protect your lawn on hills, mow up and down when using a riding mower and across when using a walk-behind mower. n Already dealing with weeds? Post-emergents are a great way to promote grass growth while killing actively growing weeds on contact. Post-emergents work best when applied later in the growing season - after weeds are established but before they’ve gone to seed. Read the fertilizer’s label and strictly follow the application instructions for best results.

Old trees, new life Artist turns reclaimed wood into furniture by Lizabeth Gray Scripps howard News Service
Three years ago, a visionary project called the Urban Tree Forge almost toppled with the death of founder John Metzler. It could have disappeared altogether if not for others who shared his passion for trees. Today, artist Jason Boone carries on that vision at Urban Tree, a new name and a new location in Pittsburgh. “It’s been a lifelong dream to have a workshop, bring in the wood on one side and the furniture comes out the other,” said Boone.
Lifelong passion Like many life passions, Boone’s love of woodworking started at an early age, on a farm near Kansas City, Mo. “My parents were brave enough to allow me to have a fair amount of tools in the garage,” he said, laughing. A young entrepreneur, he would buy pattern books, go around town getting orders and return later with the finished piece.
two bowling pins that were sculpted by Jason boone of Urban tree.
He said the direction of his life changed the day Metzler died in 2010. “He passed away May 13, and he had a bunch of jobs waiting to be finished,” said Boone. “I jumped in and helped finish up. Then in July, I got laid off from the architectural firm.” Boone’s dream remained with the forge, and so did he. However, many of the other artists drifted away. “I started up my own company, buying out pieces of the Urban Tree Forge, even some of the wood,” he said. In July, he made the move from the old location to the new one. It still functions as a cooperative, with five businesses sharing the space. Boone’s dream of a “full-cycle” workshop came closer with the

building of a drying kiln, a key component in creating quality furniture. Important to Boone’s vision is keeping everything local.
The process The process begins when someone calls to donate his raw material. A board member of Tree Pittsburgh who has participated in Arbor Aid for five years, he is sensitive to people’s feelings about trees and the years they have invested in them. “In general, people don’t want to cut their trees down,” he said. “They come down for reasons out of their control.” Not concerned with the type
of tree, he is looking for big ones, 30 to 36 inches in diameter, that he can slice into slabs with his monster of an Alaskan chain saw. “I get a lot of pin oak, ash trees, beech and maples along with a few cherry and a few walnuts.” After four to six hours of work, he ends up with six to eight planks, which are transported back to Urban Tree. They are stacked to air-dry in a large room in the front end of the warehouse for a year or two before they go to the drying kiln. Kiln-drying time for wood varies with the species. Some take as little as a month, while others may take as much as four months.
