Grafton tackles money woes By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The new Grafton Township supervisor and an incumbent trustee worked for a week crafting a $1.27 million township spending plan to ensure that the embattled township made a late June budget deadline. New Supervisor Jim Kearns and Trustee Betty Zirk scoured a year’s worth of financial records since Kearns officially took office May 20 to develop a balanced budget that Kearns said puts Grafton on the right track from its shaky financial situation. He presented the budget to the Grafton Township Board during a meeting May 23. The plan balances a budget that last year had a projected $224,000 deficit through legal fee cuts and staggered loan repayments to the road district. “I thank Betty [Zirk] for sitting with me for quite a while and helping me and explaining what they’ve done in the past,” Kearns said. Zirk, the only holdover trustee from April’s election, helped bring Kearns up to

speed on Grafton’s finances, as the two worked together to have the board vote on it May 23 to guarantee that the township made the 30-day posting deadline before sending it to the county for final approval in late June. The board tweaked certain line items to the assessor’s office before approving the budget, 5-0, in a vote that featured little contention among the newly sworn-in officials. Grafton voters in April installed four new board members after three trustees opted not to seek another term and former Supervisor Linda Moore lost her re-election bid in the February Republican primary. Moore frequently clashed with Zirk and the former trustees. The tension resulted in numerous lawsuits that helped drain Grafton finances and nearly forced the township to close until the former board approved a short-term loan from the road district in April. The new spending plan, covering a budget year that began April 1, balances Grafton’s finances without the use

of cuts to township programs. It contains only $87,000 in legal fees that Kearns said is meant to protect the township with numerous lawsuits against Grafton still unresolved. By comparison, Kearns said the previous years’ budget had more than $200,000 budgeted for legal fees. “We can keep the township running without making cuts,” Kearns said. “We are not making any cuts to programs. I’m extremely pleased how it turned out.” Kearns planned to next turn his attention to Grafton’s short-term cash-flow problems that have nearly bankrupted the township. He expected the township to receive its first property tax installment this week, with larger payments expected to trickle in by mid-June. Aside from the extra revenue, the township has enough operating money – $20,000 – to pay employees during its next payroll due at the end of May, Kearns said. He said he will review the numerous monthly bills that the former board approved but weren’t paid under Moore,

and present a list to the board in another special meeting planned for this week. Kearns couldn’t pinpoint how much the township owed in unpaid bills since he still was sorting through the list. “The world is not going to come to an end,” Kearns said. “We are going to take care of this. We will all get along enough where this won’t be a problem. We are going to solve the problems here.” Despite the monetary issues, the board hired, 5-0, Crystal Lake attorney and McHenry County Board member Joe Gottemoller to be the township’s attorney. Gottemoller previously served as Grafton’s attorney, but resigned early in Moore’s tenure, leaving the township without any formal legal representation. Kearns recommended Gottemoller to the board. He did not disclose how Gottemoller would be compensated. “I didn’t leave under the best of circumstances ... but it seemed to be appropriate at the time,” Gottemoller said. “I’m glad to be back in Grafton.”

Huntley board forced to close ash tree replacement programs By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The Huntley Village Board soon will be asked to supply more money to a program that encourages residents to replace infested ash trees after an overwhelming response closed the program this spring. Village officials saw the best response ever this spring to the 50/50 tree replacement and reimbursement programs. Officials fielded nearly 200 orders from residents who either were reimbursed 50 percent of the costs to replace infested ash trees or paid a fixed price

to have the village replace an infested tree. Since the late 2000s, the pesky emerald ash borer beetle has wreaked havoc on the thousands of ash trees scattered throughout Huntley’s public parkways and has forced officials to devise ways to have residents replenish their neighborhood landscapes. “I think people are really getting it now because they are seeing it happen on their block or in their neighborhood or subdivision,” said Barb Read, the village management assistant. Read sent notices in March to the roughly 450 residents

who saw ash trees removed last year along public parkways by their homes. The response of 200 people already has exhausted the village’s $20,000 budget for the reimbursement and replacement programs this year. Village trustees will be asked in the coming months to approve additional funding to reopen the programs for the fall, Read said. The remaining residents who didn’t respond this spring and hundreds more who will see additional trees removed this summer would be notified if the program reopens. The beetle’s infestation peaked last year in Huntley

and forced officials to remove more than 500 ash trees, a removal rate that likely will continue into 2016, when the beetle’s infestation is predicted to subside. The spring response to the heightened removals is encouraging for a village staff concerned that residents would choose to leave their neighborhood parkways barren. “There are people replacing trees in every location that we have removed trees,” Read said. “It may not be 50 percent or 100 percent, but there are people who are replacing their trees.”

Marengo grads say their goodbyes By SHAWN SHINNEMAN sshinneman@shawmedia.com MARENGO – On the grand stage she’d earned, in a gym rendered standing-room only, Jessica Villie figured she’d take a risk. So, mid-speech, to drive home a point about facing challenges head on, the valedictorian pulled out three hacky sacks and started juggling. “Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you,” she said, balls in the air, eyes focused straight ahead. Villie kept the theme going, passing her hacky sacks on to a classmate and bringing up a teacher who each juggled at her sides while she spoke. Not long after, Villie and about 200 others crossed the stage in their school’s maroon and white, officially becoming 2013 Marengo High School graduates. It was a loud, boisterous crowd that packed the high school’s gym Sunday afternoon for a ceremony that included its fair share of highlights. Villie had her human props juggle extra high, and

Caroline Campbell receives a rose after walking across the stage Sunday during the Marengo Community High School commencement. then drop to their knees to juggle low, because, she said, the future will hold its fair share of each. When she finished her half-speech, half-demonstration, Villie’s classmates recognized her thoughtfulness with a standing ovation. As she exited the stage, a

couple of her classmates hurried on to surprise Principal Scott Shepard with a couple parting gifts. Shepard, who’s been at the school about five years, will take over as principal of Crystal Lake South next year. The senior class presented him with gator meat, since

he’s heading on to the home of the Gators, and an authentic American Indian headdress, to remember the school he came from – the Indians. “That was definitely a surprise,” Shepard said after the ceremony. “This is a great place, and the small town feel really comes through in ex-

pressions like that.” After he opened his gifts, Shepard walked to the lectern to show his appreciation and continue the commencement. But a couple students’ insistence on Shepard putting on the headdress soon spread, and the class of 2013 wouldn’t be silenced until their principal sported his new gift. So he obliged. This year, the senior class averaged over 22 on the ACT. About 40 percent of them are moving on to four-year universities, and about 35 percent will head to technical, trades or two-year colleges. About 15 percent will enter the workforce. “You demanded excellence from us, setting the bar high and challenging us to reach it,” Villie told her teachers and administrators. Salutatorian Susan Anthony urged her classmates to remember where they came from as they move on to whatever next step they’ve chosen. “Share your crazy stories, your funny ones, and even your sad ones, because those are the events that made you who you are today,” Anthony said.

Re/Max Unlimited Northwest opens Huntley office By JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – It took less than a month for Dennis White to feel at home in Huntley and now he hopes to give more people the opportunity feel the same. White, co-owner of Re/ Max Unlimited Northwest, celebrated the opening of his newest location last week at 2376 Princeton Drive in Huntley. The real estate agency is the fifth location for White and his partner Mike Origer, who also have Re/Max offices in Algonquin, Palatine, Lake Zurich and Crystal Lake. After only five weeks in business in Huntley, White said the village, chamber of commerce and residents have embraced the business. “We’ve already had a couple events at Sun City,” White said, noting it was one of the housing areas that made Huntley attractive. “We’re excited to be here and have been very welcomed.” Huntley’s rapid growth and potential to continue to expand was the main reason for opening an office in the area, White said. According to the U.S. Census, the village’s population was at 5,730 people in 2000 before tripling in eight years and reaching the current level of more than 24,000 residents. White said his neighboring offices have shown the housing market is beginning to rebound, especially with single-family homes in the Crystal Lake and Algonquin markets and multifamily homes near Palatine. “Short sales and foreclosures are stabilizing and property values are increasing,” White said. “The number of days a house is on the market is decreasing and we are beginning to see multiple offers on homes again.” The new 2,000-square-foot office features an open floor plan and a large conference room, allowing agents to meet with clients in a more comfortable setting, White said. It features work spaces that business professionals and the public can use to access the Internet, he said. Agents also will teach technology classes at the lo-

ALGONQUIN – It took a strong kick from Barrington’s Mia Calamari and an acrobatic finish from teammate Molly Pfeiffer to start the scoring for the Fillies and break a scoreless tie. With 15:47 remaining in the first half of the Class 3A Jacobs Sectional semifinal soccer match against Huntley on May 21, a penalty allowed Calamari to take a free kick about 10 yards out near the sideline. She hooked the ball toward the net and Pfeiffer dived just in time to head the ball in for the first goal in Barrington’s 5-0 win over Huntley. Barrington faced Boylan, a 3-0 winner over Cary-Grove in the May 21 first semifinal, in Friday’s championship match. “We knew we were going to have a hard time with their set pieces,” Huntley coach Kris Grabner said of Barrington’s two free-kick goals. “They are so big and strong, and Pfeiffer is ridiculous in the air. The diving head ball was great.” Both teams showed toughness early on as the match became physical quickly. Grabner said after the match he knew his team had to play physically because it would be its only chance at slowing down an explosive Barrington offense. Huntley’s players heeded that game plan, and it was evident the physical play made it tough for either team to get a good look at the net as players were thrown to the ground often and bumped off the ball, but it was the Red Raiders (17-5-1) who had the first good chances. With 25 minutes left in the half, Taryn Jakubowski recorded the first shot on goal in more than 10 minutes. Just a few minutes later she found some space behind the Fillies’ defense, but with a clear look she rifled one over the net. The shot turned out to be the best chance that the Red Raiders would be allowed for the rest of the match as the Fillies clamped down. “My teammates have [given] me a lot of opportunities and I just tried my best to get it in there,” Jakubowski said. “It’s unfortunate it wasn’t our

Fillies forward Jenna Szczesny raced all over the field, but Huntley defend-

er Jenna Hermansen was right there and limited Szczesny’s chances aside from a second-half goal – Barrington’s third of the game. “Really, outside of pounding that loose ball,” Grabner said,

“[Hermansen] shut her down.” Barrington scored their second goal on a free kick in the 44th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Huntley moved players up in order to try to generate offense, but Barrington took advantage

and added three late goals. “[Huntley] looks at these games as rivalries,” Fillies coach Ryan Stengren said. “So we have to make sure to get up and be ready for them each time out.”
