Summer sports camps kick off at park district Baseball, football, lacrosse – oh, my! Basically, if it involves a ball that needs to be kicked, batted or scooped, there’s a camp for that.

Along with volleyball and soccer – including the specialized Challenger Sports British Soccer Erika curriculum Young – St. Charles Park District summer sports camps are ideal opportunities for children to perfect skills in a game they already love or try out a new sport for the first time. For children as young as 5, up to age 14, sports camps introduce fundamentals, refine mechanical skills and build confidence and self-esteem – all while kids have fun in the summer sun.

According to Athletic Supervisor Melissa Caine, all camps are adjusted to the ability levels of the participants enrolled in the program.

“Sports camps are a great

outlet for playing outdoors and learning or improving your sports skills,” she said.

There are age-appropriate basketball camps for ages 5 to 11 that allow children to perform individual drills and work as a team. Coaches introduce techniques that help players understand and develop game strategy that they can put to use in actual games during camp sessions. Similarly, participants in flag football camps enjoy all the fast-paced action of

the game in a safe, tackle-free environment, while volleyball camps let children work on refining their passing, serving and footwork skills and learn about offensive and defensive game strategies. Softball and baseball camps for boys and girls ages 7 to 10 are challenged with the many short-term goals that define the game, from bunting to base running. Lacrosse camps address the teamwork and strategies necessary to perfect this

Many celebrities have passed through the building’s doors

ST. CHARLES – With one man’s inheritance and a lofty dream, the river town of St. Charles was brought to life, and the Hotel Baker – its beating heart.

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, Hotel Baker once was known as the “Gem of the Valley,” a playground for celebrities, powerful politicos and the wealthy when it opened on the western banks of the Fox River in the Roaring Twenties.

In 1918, local philanthropist Col. Edward J. Baker and his niece, Dellora Norris, each inherited a large sum of money from Baker’s older sister and her husband, John Warne Gates, the founder of the Texas Oil Company – now Texaco.

Natalie Gacek, a St. Charles native and the Heritage Center’s Museum’s director, said Baker and Norris wanted to put their inheritance back into their hometown, a decision that greatly affected the landscape of the city.

“They had been born and raised in [St. Charles], and the colonel wanted to build a hotel where all of his friends could come and stay, and where he could entertain politicians … and other dignitaries,” she said, adding that building Hotel Baker and the Arcada Theatre cemented the town as a cultural destination.

Baker chose to buy a plot of land that had been functioning as a garbage dump – the former site of the Old Haines Mill.

Across the Main Street Bridge, the Norrises constructed the Arcada Theatre the same year.

Baker intended to use $600,000 for the hotel’s construction and ended up paying about $1 million – the equivalent of $13 million today – to construct the Spanish- and Mission-Revival Style riverfront hotel, according to Gacek.

At the time, a room cost $2.50 a night. By the 1940s, it had increased to $6 a night.

Many celebrities have passed through the hotel’s double doors, including Louis Armstrong and Guy Lombardo, who performed in the Rainbow Room, former Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, Gerald Ford and Billy Graham.

When John F. Kennedy visited St. Charles during his race for the presidency, Gacek said, local Richard Nixon supporters displayed the phrase “We like you better as a senator Mr. Kennedy” on the Arcada Theatre marquee.

Similar to today – in the past – artists who performed at the Arcada often made the walkable commute across the bridge to Hotel Baker, a partnership current owner Rowena Salas believes Baker and Norris always had in mind.

“I have always said that the Arcada and Hotel Baker have a symbiotic relationship,” said Salas, who owns the hotel with her husband, Joe. “I can’t believe that [the Norrises and Bakers] built them to not have a relationship – it was for a reason.”

The construction of the hotel and theater sparked an economic boom for St. Charles. However, the hotel itself was not profitable for Baker or those who succeeded him, until it was auctioned off in the early 2000s. “[The hotel] never made money until we came,” Salas said. “Col. Baker had deep pockets; he ran the hotel more for his own enjoyment.”

Gacek added that Baker never intended to make money off the hotel, and after running the business for 31 years still died a wealthy man.

After World War II, the hotel’s luster began to wear off, and Baker’s death in 1959 sealed the fate of the once opulent estate.

Baker bequeathed the hotel to Norris, who donated it to Lutheran Social Services of Illinois in 1968, when it was morphed into a senior living facility under the same name.

During Lutheran Social Services’ ownership, the former hotel parking garage was razed to make way for Carroll Towers, and the Rainbow Room floor was restored.

In 1996, the building was purchased by businessmen Craig A. Frank – who renovated the Arcada Theatre – and Neil D. Johnson, who spent $9 million to restore the hotel to its former glory.

They closed the hotel in 2001 after missing a mortgage payment, according to research compiled by the heritage center.

When the Salases took over ownership as a real estate investment, Salas said the city of St. Charles encouraged the couple to reopen as a hotel.

The future As far as what the future will bring to Hotel Baker, Gacek said she’s thrilled to see the building as a hotel again, and thriving in downtown St. Charles.

“It’s still one of the most widely recognized buildings for anyone who has either visited or grown up in town,” Gacek said. “People use it as a point of reference, and it epitomizes St. Charles, along with the Municipal Building and the Arcada Theatre.”

Salas hopes the building will be around for years to come.

“It’s going to be here until after me,” she said. “It has a perpetual life.”

“It helped that the history of the hotel already dictated what it could be or would be,” she said.

During the family’s ownership, Salas said they’ve come across a few pieces of hidden history. A mural was discovered beneath a layer of stucco on the ceiling of the Waterfront Room depicting a cloud-filled blue sky with outdoor elements, such as ivy and trellises which were remnants of Baker’s loungelike trophy room, designed to resemble an outdoor courtyard.

FLOATING IMAGES Older individuals sometimes notice spots and specks floating across their fields of vision, particularly when looking up at the sky or other solid-hued backgrounds. While these “floaters” may initially arouse concern, they are generally nothing to worry about. These floating thread-like fragments are actually strands of collagen (a protein) that commonly occur as a result of shrinkage of the “vitreous humor” (the gel-like substance inside the eye). As we age, the vitreous humor shrinks and the fine collagen fibers it contains become thread-like. Like clouds in the sky, they can block the light hitting the retina, thereby creating shadows that we see as floaters. No treatment is required, but sudden increases or sudden flashes of light should prompt immediate treatment. P.S. ST. CHARLES – Beginning next month, St. Charles residents will get the chance to win a $100 shopping spree courtesy of the city.

The catch? Winners won’t receive cash. Instead, they will be reimbursed up to $100 for purchases made at three different independent stores or restaurants in St. Charles.

Economic Development Coordinator Michael Mertes said the Shop St. Charles Challenge was created by the Economic Development Department and will run through April 2014.

“The thought behind the program was a marketing opportunity for businesses and an opportunity to promote them at no cost to them,” he said.

There will be one winner each month, selected from a monthly drawing. The winners will have 30 days to patronize three St. Charles businesses in a different commercial corridor – downtown, east side and west side. It is free to enter.

The winners then will be asked to complete a written review or submit an interview about their experiences at each business, Mertes said.

He said the reviews will be shared in places such as the city’s monthly newsletter and social media.

“We’re excited about the program,” Mertes said. “Who wouldn’t want $100 to shop in town?”

ST. CHARLES – Nearly a dozen households on the city’s west side reported recent burglaries to their vehicles – and in some cases to their homes – earlier this month, St. Charles police said.

St. Charles Police Department spokesman Paul McCurtain described the burglaries as crimes of opportunity because they involved unlocked cars.

Police believe the burglaries, which happened between the night of May 9 and the morning of May 10 are connected, he said.

“The cases are all under investigation,” McCurtain said.

He reminded people to lock the doors to their homes as well as their vehicles.

“Be aware of what’s going on in your neighborhood,” McCurtain said.

In two cases, residents reported that someone had en-

Two burglaries occurred in the 100 block of Lewis Court, where items in a 2006 Honda car were disturbed but not stolen, and a $350 designer purse was taken from a Chevrolet, according to police reports. Police noted the purse contained only miscellaneous paperwork, no money, credit cards or important documents.

Three vehicles in the 300 and 900 blocks of Timbers Trail also were hit. Two phone chargers valued at $40 each and some coins were taken from a 2007 Chevrolet; a $40 phone charger, $100 navigation system and some cash were stolen from a 2008 Toyota; and a $100 navigation system was missing from a 2007 GMC, police reported.

In the 100 block of Carrol Road, a fleece jacket was reported stolen from a 2012 Nissan.

Meanwhile, items were disturbed but nothing was reported stolen from a 2006 Nissan in the 500 block of Bradley Circle, police reported.

In emergencies, McCurtain said, residents should call 911.

Someone also entered an unlocked house in the 1300 block of Fox Meadow Court, but nothing was reported stolen, police said. Entry was also reportedly made to a 2000 Dodge vehicle.

A resident in the 1200 block of Brook Street reportedly awoke to a 1994 Ford car parked in his driveway that did not belong to him. The lights were reportedly on, windows were rolled down, the doors were unlocked and a key was in the ignition. Police reportedly traced the car to the 200 block of Debruyne Street.

The owner told police no damage was done to the vehicle, and only a lanyard with four keys was missing.

As the flat-rate shipping boxes filled up, some students sat on the floor, trying to make everything fit.

“To me, this is a super important thing,” teacher Meg Bingham said, handing the students more letters to put in their boxes.

The service project shows them they can serve others, she said, and it teaches them others are making huge sacrifices for them.

“They find value in it,” Bingham said.

LYLE ANTHONY KLEIN On Tuesday, May 21st of 2013, Lyle A. Klein of Geneva, Illinois, passed away of natural causes at the age of 82. By his side at the time of his passing, were his loving wife of more than 40 years, Sandra Klein, and his beloved daughter, Erica Heth.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Sandra Klein; four children, Lyle Klein, Jr., Joseph (Joslyn) Klein, James (Kris) Klein, and Erica Heth; seven grandchildren, Ethan Klein, Dylan Klein, Hawkyns Klein, Sam Heth, Aidan Heth, Keira Heth, & Brenna Heth; and siblings Janet, Tootie and Sandy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Frances Klein, and son-in-law, Rick Heth.

Lyle was born in Balta, North Dakota, on August 11, 1930. His life is best described as the quintessential American dream.

A product of the Great Depression,

pr ep ion, Lyle eventually starred and captained the Marquette University football team in the 1950s. After serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, he translated his passion for football and fashion into spending a life working for two of our country's most cherished institutions: the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, and Levi Strauss & Company. Lyle will be remembered as a man who lived life to its fullest and commanded an unparalleled level of respect by all those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He was truly everybody's All-American. By those closest to him, Lyle will be remembered as someone who has imprinted countless indelible marks on all our souls. These special engravings have left each of us with a blueprint for how to live a life of faith, love, honesty, integrity, joy, and success. For these and innumerable other reasons, we celebrate the life of Lyle Anthony Klein, and thank him for everything!

ST. CHARLES – Students at the Mades-Johnstone Center in St. Charles didn’t hesitate May 17 to tell Kathy Tobusch, co-chair of Fox Valley Troop Support, about their personal connections to the nation’s armed forces.

Interrupting a conversation, one boy told her that his dad is expected to deploy to Afghanistan this summer.

Tobusch – who was at the Mid-Valley Special Education Cooperative school to talk to students about care packages for soldiers – promised to send a package to the boy’s father.

Tobusch, whose two sons have deployed to Iraq, said it was great that the students spent weeks collecting items for the soldiers and took time Friday to package them.

Customers won’t go home hungry from Gabby’s

“We want all shifts to pop,” said Angelo Sellas, who manages the restaurant with his brother, John Sellas.

The burgers are fresh and hand-packed, the soup is homemade every day, and they bread their own meats, onion rings and shrimp, Angelo Sellas said.

One of the more popular entrees at Gabby’s Kitchen is the towering Moo & Oink Burger – a half-pound burger topped with slow-braised pulled pork, applewood smoked bacon and melted cheddar cheese, topped with a hefty onion ring. Diners have plenty of options for side dishes – 15, to be exact. Aside from traditional French fries, they offer sweet potato fries, tater tots, rice pilaf, creamy cole slaw and macaroni and cheese, to name a few.

Chef Justyn Puchalski cooks up an Iowa Pork Tenderloin Sandwich – a heaping serving of breaded pork tenderloin that hangs over the bun. It is served in the same fashion as the Moo & Oink Burger, with a crispy onion ring topping the bun.

“You’re not gonna go home hungry,” John Sellas said.

“We’re trying to make something fresh and homemade,” Angelo Sellas said. “We stay away from as much process as possible.”

Homemade desserts include Greek yogurt, cobblers and warm bread pudding.

1985. They both have worked in the restaurant industry for many years, and Angelo Sellas said Gabby’s Kitchen is a conglomeration of their combined experience.

They reopened the restaurant as Gabby’s Kitchen almost three years ago. Black-andwhite photos of the Sellas’ family members – as well as the family members of some of their customers – line the walls above each booth.

Also on the walls are colorful chalkboards displaying specials that change monthly or seasonally. They have an omelet of the month, wings of the month, fish of the month and a burger of the month.

For families on the go, the restaurant offers carry-out family packs that feed four or five people. That menu includes chicken Parmesan, southern-fried chicken and a chicken and ribs combo.

The restaurant started catering about 1½ years ago, and is flexible as far as customization goes, Angelo Sellas said.

The restaurant offers 15 different sides to choose from, including baked potatoes, coleslaw, sweet potato fries and mashed potatoes.

Meagan Provencher fields questions about plants yearround.

But around mid-May, one question in particular sprouts constantly, from a range of visitors to the Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles, where Provencher works as the senior landscape designer.

“People want to know: Is it too late to plant?” Provencher said. “It’s the question I get more than any other this time of year.

“And the answer is, there’s nothing that says to have your planting done by Mother’s Day or June 1 or any date. So many people believe it, but you can go all summer long.”

As spring weather has warmed the air and the soil, it also has heated the desire of amateur home landscapers and gardeners to get outside and dig in the dirt.

Managers at local garden centers, including Provencher at Wasco Nursery and Joe Heidgen, co-owner at Shady Hill Gardens in Elburn, said May consistently ranks as the busiest time of the year for their greenhouses and nurseries.

“When the weather gets warm like this, I don’t know how many people might come through here on a weekend day,” Provencher said. “Hundreds? Thousands? All I know is, they just keep streaming on through here and it’s great.”

Heidgen and Provencher said many of their customers are looking to jump on the trend of “container gardening,” which allows gardeners to plant flowers or vegetables in pots and boxes rather than in the ground.

Heidgen said many of his customers are turning to container gardening to grow plants that are relatively easy to grow and save space.

Provencher said perennial gardening also has become increasingly popular, and some homeowners seek flowering plants that blossom year after year.

But others seem to have developed a flare for the exotic, Heidgen said, choosing tropi-

• Take the time to improve your soil. Heidgen recommended using compost, peat or other organic material to augment your dirt. He also recommended changing at least half of the soil in planting containers annually. “It can be boring, but it’s a lot of the determination in how it’s going to turn out,” he said.

• Don’t overthink things. Don’t become too consumed with worry about pests or diseases. “I kill stuff all the time,” Provencher said. “Just take it and learn from it.”

• Get dirty. There’s no substitute for getting down and working the soil.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. “We’re here to answer your questions and help you achieve your goals,” Provencher said.

The gardening center managers also noted that last

year’s drought did not seem to discourage many people from planting again this year. Rather, it may have produced better educated and more determined gardeners.

“Things that survived the drought and did well have also become popular,” Heidgen said.

He said many gardeners, for instance, learned last year that if they kept up with watering, the heat produced bumper crops of tomatoes, squash and other backyard fruits and vegetables.

At the Wasco Nursery recently, Brian Wiedenhoeft of Geneva said he intended to plant annual red and white petunias this year along the front of his home, as he has for years.

He said the planting marks his only foray into gardening each year.

“It really makes the front

of the house pop, you know?”

Wiedenhoeft said.

He said the petunias, while noticeably smaller, seemed to pull through last summer’s drought. And that reinforced his decision to plant them again this year.

Others had more ambitious gardening and landscaping projects.

Maureen and Ray Zmich of the Windings subdivision west of St. Charles said they were in the process of reclaiming a portion of their wooded lot that had become overrun with invasive weeds and shrubs.

The work included clearing the invasive plants, creating trails with mulch and stone, and replanting other, more desirous flowers and other plants.

“We were out all morning,” Maureen said. “And we just ran out of plants.”

Aurora’s RiverEdge Park to offer summer of music, events

Aurora’s new outdoor entertainment venue – RiverEdge Park – will kick off its inaugural season Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, with the 17th annual Blues on the Fox festival, which will feature acts such as Chicago’s own Buddy Guy, Dr. John, JJ Grey & Mofro, The Stone Foxes, Tommy Castro and The Painkillers and Robert Randolph and The Family Band.

Area press, including the Kane County Chronicle, recently were given a behindthe-scenes look at the $13 million venue, which has a capacity of between 8,500 and 10,500 people. From Monday, June 3, to Sunday, June 9, RiverEdge Park will hold public tours of the facility.

RiverEdge Park is anchored by the John C. Dunham performance pavilion, which boasts state-of-the art acoustics.

“You feel like you are surrounded by sound,” said RiverEdge Park architect David Steele, of Chicago-based Muller + Muller architectural firm.

Living up to its name, RiverEdge Park is along the Fox River at 360 N. Broadway Ave. near downtown Aurora and across from the Metra station. A sound wall was built to block noise coming from the street.

The venue’s architects drew inspiration from Milwaukee’s popular Summerfest in constructing the venue’s plywood stage.

“Plywood has a nice spring, a nice sound,” Steele said.

Two Brothers Roundhouse, which is directly across the street from RiverEdge Park, is the park’s official food vendor and also will sell Two Brothers’ craft beers. In addition, 10 to 12 local restaurants will serve a variety of food at the park.

“Every weekend we will have something going on,” said Jim Jarvis, director of communications and sales for the Paramount Theatre.

RiverEdge Park is the centerpiece in a 10-year master plan for the city of Aurora.

Future plans include building a pedestrian bridge to connect the east and west sides of the Fox River.

RiverEdge Park was constructed by the city of Aurora through a combination of grants and donations from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Fox Valley Park District and The Dunham Fund.

“Your coaches are probably better than mine growing up,” the Tinley Park native said.

Magnuson and fellow Olympian Adam Brown gave the young athletes tips in and out of the pool during a clinic at the St. Charles East High School campus. They worked with about 120 swimmers in a younger age group May 25.

“It reminds you where you came from,” Magnuson said between taking pictures with the teens. “I came from a program just like theirs.”

Brown said he loves to help

and inspire the next generation of swimmers and to give back to the sport.

Although he and Magnuson are Olympians, he said, they don’t do anything special or out of the ordinary. They simply try to perfect the basics, he said, adding he feels joy when he sees kids focus on what he’s trying to teach them.

“They inspire us to work harder in our own training,” Magnuson said.

Fifteen-year-old Johnny Tarpey of St. Charles and 17-year-old Taylor Falk of Batavia said they appreciated the opportunity to learn

new techniques.

“It’s always the little things that can change your stroke,” Falk said.

Before entering the pool at the Norris Recreation Center, the young swimmers met the Olympians in East’s gym. Magnuson and Brown shared their paths to the Olympics and answered questions, which addressed superstitions, eating habits and – among other topics – overcoming disappointment.

Magnuson said failure can be hard if winning is your only goal. For her, she said, earning medals is not the endgame.

“I do it because I love the sport,” she said.

Brown offered similar advice. He told the swimmers not to put too much pressure on themselves to perform.

“Swimming’s all about having fun,” he said.

hen the weather gets dark and gloomy on a warm afternoon, big storm clouds roll in and the sky turns an unusual color, there might be a tornado on the way.

Tornadoes are violent storms that begin in a thunderstorm and extend all the way to the ground. They have strong winds that often (but not always) form a funnel shape, and can destroy many buildings, cars and trees in their path.

Tornadoes form when a warm and moist pocket of air runs into a cold and dry front. When the two meet, they can cause the atmosphere to become unstable.

If strong winds meet this unstable atmosphere, it can spin the storm into a tube formation, called a funnel cloud. Once the funnel cloud forms, it can be very dangerous.

There is normally a warning when a tornado is on the way. You will often hear a tornado siren in your town if conditions are right for a tornado to form. If you are watching TV or listening to the radio, you will also hear a warning. Tornadoes are also very, very loud. You will often hear the sound of a tornado coming — like a loud train going by — before you see it.

If a tornado is on the way, you need to move very quickly to make yourself safe. Here are a few things to remember: ! Avoid windows. If a window breaks, you want to be away from the glass. ! Go to the basement: Basements are often the safest place to be in a tornado. If you don’t have a basement, get on the lowest floor of the building away from windows. ! Protect yourself: Get under a heavy table, cover yourself with a mattress or crouch on the floor with your head covered in a safe place. ! At school: Follow the drill! Know what the plan is for a tornado at school. Listen to your teachers’ instructions, and keep calm and quiet.

Water in the early morning, so the sun will help dry the grass. Nighttime watering can result in prolonged moisture on the blades and can open the door to disease. n how do you know if you’re watering enough? Old trees, new life Artist turns reclaimed wood into furniture

Three years ago, a visionary project called the Urban Tree Forge almost toppled with the death of founder John Metzler.

It could have disappeared altogether if not for others who shared his passion for trees.

Today, artist Jason Boone carries on that vision at Urban Tree, a new name and a new location in Pittsburgh.

“It’s been a lifelong dream to have a workshop, bring in the wood on one side and the furniture comes out the other,” said Boone.

Lifelong passion Like many life passions, Boone’s love of woodworking started at an early age, on a farm near Kansas City, Mo. “My parents were brave enough to allow me to have a fair amount of tools in the garage,” he said, laughing. A young entrepreneur, he would buy pattern books, go around town getting orders and return later with the finished piece.

He said the direction of his life changed the day Metzler died in 2010.

“He passed away May 13, and he had a bunch of jobs waiting to be finished,” said Boone. “I jumped in and helped finish up.

Then in July, I got laid off from the architectural firm.”

Boone’s dream remained with the forge, and so did he. However, many of the other artists drifted away.

“I started up my own company, buying out pieces of the Urban Tree Forge, even some of the wood,” he said.

In July, he made the move from the old location to the new one. It still functions as a cooperative, with five businesses sharing the space.

Important to Boone’s vision is keeping everything local.

The process The process begins when someone calls to donate his raw material.

A board member of Tree Pittsburgh who has participated in Arbor Aid for five years, he is sensitive to people’s feelings about trees and the years they have invested in them.

“In general, people don’t want to cut their trees down,” he said.

“They come down for reasons out of their control.”

Not concerned with the type

of tree, he is looking for big ones, 30 to 36 inches in diameter, that he can slice into slabs with his monster of an Alaskan chain saw.

“I get a lot of pin oak, ash trees, beech and maples along with a few cherry and a few walnuts.”

After four to six hours of work, he ends up with six to eight planks, which are transported back to Urban Tree. They are stacked to air-dry in a large room in the front end of the warehouse for a year or two before they go to the drying kiln.

Kiln-drying time for wood varies with the species. Some take as little as a month, while others may take as much as four months.
