8STREET TALK Should Downers Grove have another rail underpass?
DGR
DOWNERS GROVE – The West Suburban Humane Society in Downers Grove has new residents. Dogs from an overcrowded shelter in Moore, Okla., where a deadly tornado destroyed stretches of the town on May 20, were taken in last week by the local shelter. Carolyn Mossberger, executive director of the West Suburban Humane Society, said the shelter reached out to Save Our Strays, based in Moore, to see whether it could provide help in the days after the EF-5 tornado hit the town. Twelve dogs were sent to the Downers Grove shelter. Three are in foster homes, while the nine remaining were available for adoption as of Friday.

Andrus family remembered after murder-suicide By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Four caskets formed a U-shape at the Gerharz-Cappetta Funeral Home in Lemont on Monday as grieving family and friends remembered the four members of the Andrus family.
The caskets were decorated with flowers and photos, mostly of the family together on vacation or enjoying the holidays. A note basket sat atop each one, and of the 100 or so people who came during the day, someone left David a Diet Pepsi. It was difficult to believe the same family in the pho-
tos were victims of tragedy. Jeana Andrus, 48; Jessica Andrus, 22; Jennifer Andrus, 16; and David Andrus, 50, were found shot to death at their home at 555 Oldfield Road in unincorporated DuPage County on June 11. According to autopsy reports, the women’s deaths have been ruled homicides,

while David Andrus’ death was ruled a suicide. The funeral was Tuesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. The four family members will be buried together in Clarendon Hills Cemetery, according to the funeral home. On Friday, Stephen Turner, owner of USA Skate in Romeoville, held a memorial for the family. Jeana worked at the skate rink about five years, and Turner said whenever she was there, she would bring her daughter, Jennifer. Pictures were on display, and Turner had his brother, who is a priest, come and perform a service that evening. “[Jeana] would basically give you the shirt off her back when she really couldn’t afford the shirt,” Turner said. Jessica is a Class of 2011 alumna of Hinsdale South High School, while Jennifer was a student in the Class of 2015, Principal Brian Waterman said. It still is unknown what the motive was in the mur-
der-suicide. David, however, was a former employee of Midtronics in Willowbrook. According to an emailed statement from the company, the employment of David Andrus recently had been “terminated for cause” from the company. Any details surrounding his employment would not be released publicly to protect confidentiality. “Midtronics employees are like family and we mourn this tragic loss of life. Midtronics extends our thoughts and sympathy to all those impacted and have made grief counseling available to our employees during this difficult time,” the statement said. Turner said proceeds from the memorial over the weekend went to funeral costs. He could not say enough about Jeana as far as her character and how well she was liked. “She was very giving and if she could do it, she’d help you,” Turner said. “That was Jeana. Everybody knew her.”
Library board to hear design plans for $2.4 million interior renovation SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – The public will have a chance next week to hear plans for a proposed $2.4 million renovation project at the Downers Grove Public Library. The Chicago firm Product Architecture + Design will present designs to the library board at 7:30 p.m. June 26 in the library’s meeting room. The public can ask questions and add comments, library spokeswoman Melissa Doornbos said. The interior renovation project is in the design phase, Doornboss said, and construction is planned to begin in early in 2014 and be completed by fall 2014. The present library building opened in 1999. Its mechanical systems, roof, windows and electrical systems still are in good shape after 14 years, Doornbos said, but its interiors have been heav-
ily used. Floors, furnishings, wall treatments, restrooms and lighting need rejuvenation after years of normal wear and tear, along with changes in technology and public-use patterns that have occurred since 1999. Plans also include improvements to the building’s north entrance. The project will not increase the size of the 67,000-square-foot building. The library board has allocated $2,394,000 for the project from its 2013 and 2014 operating budgets, the existing Library Construction Fund and accumulated financial reserves, officials said. After the completion of the project, the library’s collection of printed materials will be smaller to allow for more digital resources and group study spaces. The library will remain open during the project.
Downers Grove waitress scratches $4M lotto ticket after shift
Ask Dr. Webster
Q: My teeth have been getting a little darker as I age. Is that normal?
A: Alas, as we age, changes take place in the mouth. Changes that come with aging affect the teeth, gums, jawbone and other features of the mouth. A darkening of the teeth is one of these natural changes. Over the years the enamel of your teeth tends to become more transparent. It shows more of the dentin underneath, and the dentin is what darkens with age. The teeth also literally wear down over decades of use. Chewing, for instance, wears down the biting surface of the teeth. That type of wear is called attrition. Another type of wear is called abrasion. It occurs in the cementum that covers the root of the tooth. This type of wear is more common in older people whose gums have receded. Receded gums also make the roots more vulnerable to decay. Another natural change is the wrinkling of skin around the mouth. It’s just a fact that older cells contain less water and older tissue, less fat. Older people who have lost some or all of their teeth are also more likely to experience bone resorption, or dissolution. Dryness in the mouth is another natural part of aging. It can be exacerbated by other factors, including medication use. Talk with your dentist about how to keep your mouth healthy as you age.

Connie Licona (right), a waitress at the DuPage Inn in Downers Grove, and her sister, Sandy Saleh, celebrate Licona’s $4 million win from a scratch-off lottery ticket Friday.
SD • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 • mysuburbanlife.com • Reporter | Progress
DOWNERS GROVE – When DuPage Inn waitress Connie Licona scratched off her lottery ticket after a shift June 12, she was excited about what she thought was a $4,000 winner. Then one of her coworkers took a second look at the $20 ticket. “She said, ‘Connie, you gotta sit down for a minute,’” Licona said Friday. “She said, ‘You won $4 million.’ “I almost fell. I couldn’t believe it.” The Glen Ellyn resident took the $4 million winner to her brother’s house in Lombard to celebrate. She always has Thursdays off, and the celebration continued that night, too. She took a personal day Friday. “I’m still hungover,” she said by phone Friday. But she said Monday she will be back at the bar and restaurant to work with her friends. “So many people called me asking, ‘Are you quitting, are you quitting?’” she said. “No, I’m not quittin’.” The 51-year-old opted to take a onetime payout of $1.68 million instead
“It hasn’t even sunk in yet,” she said. “I think it’ll sink in when I see that check.” She plans to buy a house for one of her daughters who is a single mother and help her other three children financially in other ways. For her mother, a new car; for her sister, a condo. The rest, she plans to invest, possibly in real estate, she said, although she first wants to consult a financial adviser. Licona has worked at the Downers Grove business about six years, she said, but it started offering lottery tickets only about a year ago. In that time, she’s seen a few people win a thousand dollars, but not nothing approaching her luck this week. Licona said she hasn’t yet contemplated any “fun” spending. “I have not even thought of one thing that I want to buy for myself,” she said. “I’m not worried about me. I’m worried about my family.” The DuPage Inn also gets a 1 percent cut of the $4 million, which is $40,000. Manager Chris Boulougouris said the funds probably will go to a combination of bills and possible renovation projects that have not been decided upon.

Off-duty police officer apprehends mailbox vandal in Downers Grove SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – An off-duty police officer was in his garage in the 1500 block of Dickson Avenue about 2:40 a.m. June 9 when he allegedly witnessed two men hitting mailboxes several houses down the block. When he identified himself as a police officer, the two men fled. One of the men later was identified as Kevin D. Gordon, and the other man was not found, police said. Gordon, 19, of 1320 68th Place, Downers Grove, allegedly held a wooden stake in front of the officer in a threatening manner and demanded to see the officer’s badge, which the officer displayed, police said. According to the police report, Gordon said he could not see the badge, and the officer
unholstered his gun, at which point Gordon dropped the stake and continued to run. Eventually, the officer took Gordon down to the ground and detained him until other officers arrived, police said. There were no physical strikes exchanged between the two, according to the police report. Police did not find the other suspect, described as a white male wearing a Chicago Blackhawks cap and jersey. Gordon was charged with assault, criminal damage to property and underage consumption of alcohol, police said. One resident’s mailbox allegedly was torn off by Gordon and the unknown suspect, causing about $200 in damage. Two other broken mailboxes also were found by police, they said.

This cafe is a well-built, beautiful turn-of-the-century space that has served a number of purposes over the decades, including as the First National Bank in the 1920s. It was actually robbed for $9,200 back in 1929. Thankfully, the original vault, gold tin ceiling and other structural features of the bank still exist.

DOWNERS GROVE – A Downers Grove man allegedly crashed his car through a chain-link fence before coming to a stop 250 feet into a backyard at 9:37 p.m. June 8 in the 700 block of Prairie Avenue. The driver, Aaron E. Johnson, 23, 1918 Hitchcock Ave., Downers Grove, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, aggravated assault, resisting a peace officer and driving too fast for conditions, police said. Police said his purple Honda Accord became airborne during the wreck before it created several divots in the landscaping of the yard, smashed through a chainlink fence, struck a tree
and dislodged landscaping bricks. Johnson told police his brakes malfunctioned, police said. Police arrived, cuffed Johnson’s hands behind his back and put him in the back of the squad car, where they say he allegedly moved his hands, still handcuffed, to the front of his body. When police again cuffed his hands behind his back, Johnson allegedly screamed and yelled profanities at officers, police said. Johnson allegedly yelled threats against the lives of officers and their families, police said. Johnson’s passenger Bradley Taylor, 24, 27W600 Warrenville Road, Warrenville, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.

DOWNERS GROVE – Streetrods, American classics, 4x4 trucks and other tuned-up cars will roll into Downers Grove on Sunday for the Festival of Cars’ 30th anniversary. The annual celebration of unique automobiles and their owners is the final day of the Rotary Club’s GroveFest beginning Thursday. The car show runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Festival of Cars committee member Mel Gregory said on a day with nice weather, the event can expect up to about 200 car entries. “We’re trying to put a darn good car show out there for people who love cars,” he said. A highlight of the Festival of Cars is the awards presentation based upon participant voting. Trophies are presented for the Pierce Downer Award, Best in Show, and the Mayor’s Award, as well three awards for each of 20 car classes. Participants also receive a dash plaque and goody bags for the first 200 entrants and door prizes. Dennis Secara of DJ Big Bopper Service and owner of 1957 Chevy will provide music throughout the show. The festival is open to the public at no charge, and participants pay an entrance fee of $20. The car show is on Warren Avenue, north of the BNSF railroad tracks west of Forest Avenue. Access to GroveFest’s craft show, entertainment, food and rides from the car show is across the BNSF tracks. GroveFest offers carnival rides, the Main Street Food & Business Expo, a Craft Show in Fishel Park and an entertainment lineup on three stages. The Rotary is offering a “Sneak-a-Peak” one-price evening from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday with an all-ride pass for $23 a person.

Youth program allows Downers Grove teens to serve on village commissions By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The application window is open for Downers Grove teens who want to experience government first-hand and have their voices heard by Village Hall. Downers Grove’s Youth in Government program places teens on village commissions as voting members for a year. The program is open to students who will be juniors in high school in the fall. Applications are due July 1. Justine Hung, a 17-yearold senior-to-be at North High School, began her year in the program in October. She sits on the village’s Environmental Concerns Commission with the nine adult members. “They’ve been really welcoming to me, too,” she said. “I like being able to feel like I’m their equal. They don’t treat me as a student.” Hung and the rest of the commission created a recognition

Applications for the program are collected by village staff and given to Mayor Martin Tully, who interviews potential participants, program manager and Village Management Fellow Nick Santoro said. Tully then nominates the students he chooses, and the Village Council votes whether to confirm the nominations like they would for any other board appointees. “We have a lot of people who have been serving on commissions or serving in the community for decades,” he said. “It’s always nice to get that perspec-

Unlike the adult commissioners who serve three-year terms, students are cycled through on a one-year basis. “You’re constantly getting that fresh perspective,” Santoro said. In addition to the environmental commission, students can serve on the Transportation and Parking Commission, the Community Events Commission and the Social and Health Services Commission, which meets on a more ad hoc basis. During the application process, students rank the commissions in order of preference, although they are not guaranteed their top choice.

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove resident Don Shee and his neighbors planted more than 100 American flags in honor of Flag Day last year, and this year, they upped the ante. Again, the parkways near the 1400 block of 62nd Street are adorned with American flags – this year, with larger flags. On Friday, Shee hosted a performance by the West Suburban Concert Band on his front yard. Friends and neighbors were invited to gather and bring lawn chairs to enjoy the band’s renditions of patriotic songs and inspiring music. Flag Day celebrates the June 14, 1777, adoption of the flag of the United States.

District 58 scheduled to complete capital improvement projects District 58 is on track to complete a variety of Life Safety, operations and maintenance projects and security upgrades at its 13 schools during the summers of 2013 and 2014. These projects are the result of years of careful planning and needs assessments, including a comprehensive facilities study conducted last winter by consultant Wight and Co. COMMUNITY We are excited to take the VOICE next steps toward implementKari ing our plans to upgrade our facilities in a way that Cremascoli is fiscally responsible and student centered. These improvements will help us continue to achieve our mission of providing top-quality services to our students in safe, nurturing and supportive learning environments. Projects planned for the summers of 2013 and 2014 include much-needed asbestos abatement and carpet/tile replacement, asphalt projects, fire alarm and HVAC upgrades and security upgrades to buildings throughout the district. Phase one of districtwide security upgrades will also occur this summer, including secure front entrances, a new swipe card system for staff and updated security/burglar alarms. The district plans to issue about $5 million in Life Safety bonds this summer to address the identified and eligible Life Safety and security needs of its school facilities, and use an additional $3 million of its own funds to pay for other prioritized projects throughout the district, including a three-classroom addition and other upgrades at Pierce Downer School. As part of the Strategic Planning Process completed in 2011, District 58 community members, parents and staff indicated that one of the district’s top priorities over the next five years should be to ensure that its schools and other facilities are safe, welcoming, positive environments that support and enhance student learning. I am proud of the work accomplished by the District 58 Board and our community over the past several years with regards to facility planning, and look forward to sharing our progress with our students, staff and community. Visit our Facilities Planning Page, www.dg58.org/ domain/734, for information and a full list of projects by school.

A new College of DuPage program serves veterans with a free course that teaches skills critical to the booming energy-efficiency industry. Last week, we wrote about the program and how it has aided a Downers Grove Navy veteran. COD deserves the positive publicity it has received for offering the program. Anything we can do for our vets – especially to get them back in the workforce – should be done. Over a four-day span recently, there were two incidents in which suspicious men approached youngsters in the Downers Grove community. While Downers Grove police have done a great job of informing the community, it’s important that the community sticks together to protect our young ones. 8NEWS BRIEFS Oak Brook-based firm buys Commerce Center DOWNERS GROVE – Inland Real Estate Acquisitions, Inc. announced its purchase of the Commerce Center shopping strip in Downers Grove for about $9.9 million Thursday. The Commerce Center has 104,196 square feet and is leased to Toys R Us and Best Buy. “The Butterfield Road retail corridor is one of the strongest in the western suburbs, anchored by Oakbrook Center on one end and this center and surrounding retailers on the other,” Inland Vice President Mark Cosenza said in a news release. “It is an excellent site, as evidenced by Best Buy’s recent decision to renew its lease at the property for a new 10-year term, and both tenants are paying sustainable rents at below-market rates. “We’ve had a long relationship with the village of Downers Grove, having acquired both retail and multifamily assets in the area, and we are pleased to continue it with this transaction.” Toys R Us has been open at the center for more than 30 years, and Best Buy opened in 1992. In addition to the retail store, Best Buy uses the location to house a 10,000-squarefoot training center and regional office. Inland Real Estate Acquisitions Inc. is headquartered in Oak Brook.

Try something different at Mollie’s Public House RIVERSIDE – When I stepped into Mollie’s Public House in Riverside, I was in a contrarian mood. Feeling like I had settled into a rut of always ordering the same sorts of meals no matter where I went, I was resolved to try something out of character. Something I normally would reject. I perused the menu and forced myself to overlook enticing options, such as the buffalo wrap, classic Reuben and half-pound burgers. All sounded great, but I needed something different. Then I came across “Big Bad John.” The description read: “Roasted pork loin wrapped in bacon, stuffed with corned beef and Mollie’s sauce topped with cheddar cheese and a pineapple slice, served on a pretzel bun. Accompanied with our hand-cut french fries.” Pork loin. Bacon. Corned beef. Cheddar cheese. With a pineapple slice. I safely could say I never had eaten anything like it. My dining companions
opted for more standard fare, a burger and the shepherd’s pie, and both looked terrific. They’re on my to-try list the next time I stop by Mollie’s. But the Big Bad John sandwich dwarfed all other food options. It probably is the largest sandwich I ever have attempted to consume. I wanted to finish it – who wants to let pork loin go unfinished? – but it was such a massive amount of food, I couldn’t manage it. But I certainly got my money’s worth, and my taste buds were pleased by the savory combination of meaty flavors and the occasional hint of pineappley sweetness. Since my visit, Mollie’s has posted a summer menu online that replaces such heavy, cold-weather options with lighter fare. Most notably, it offers a slew of salad choices, including a grilled vegetable salad with asparagus, squash, zucchini and red pepper, and a fregadero salad (fregadero is Spanish for kitchen sink) that has more ingredients than I

Pork loin, bacon, corned beef, cheddar cheese, pineapple ... there’s a lot to the “Big Bad John” sandwich at Mollie’s Public House. have space to list here. The interior at Mollie’s is an authentic pub experience, with dark wood features, but a high enough ceiling that it doesn’t feel cramped. There’s a sporty vibe with TVs mounted above the bar and a soccer jersey on display, plus a great outdoor seating area to enjoy the fresh air and ambiance of Riverside’s downtown. I don’t think I’d get the
Big Bad John again, as much as I enjoyed it, because wolfing down that much protein just isn’t the norm for me. But given that I had a great experience even while going outside my comfort zone, I’m sure I’ll be even happier with some of the options that are more aligned with my typical palate. Assuming I’m not in a contrarian mood again the next time I drop by, that is.

Pizza Via catering delivers the whole brick oven SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Father and son Bob and Alex Ciciora of Downers Grove can stand the heat in the kitchen, but don’t have to, thanks to the portable brick oven they designed to take on the road for a catering business they call The Pizza Via. Bob, an airline pilot by profession, built the oven himself brick by brick, and the traveling business he helms just went full time under the wing of Alex, who completed advanced training in the venerable art of fine pizza. What started as a hobby meant to entertain family and friends took off as Alex’s passion for cooking developed. While still in high school, he enrolled in cooking classes

at the Technology Center of DuPage in Addison. At 18, he’d already launched a catering business with a friend. “I’ve always had a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. “I was the kid who shoveled driveways in winter and made lemonade stands in summer.” After graduating from the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn in 2012, he went on to receive certification as a pizzaiola (a pizza chef) from the San Francisco branch of the Scuola Italiana Pizzaioli pizza
school of Italy. His specialty is Neapolitan and classic Italian-style pizzas. The Pizza Via brings its portable wood-fired brick oven to events between April and November. The Cicioras note the dough and sauce are handmade and paired with fresh ingredients for flavorful pizza served buffet style. “I’ve worked in the restaurant business since I was 16,” said Alex, 22. “While that was fun, I love the catering business. People are getting together to celebrate and have a good time. That energy is contagious, and it’s so much fun.” A typical menu for The Pizza Via includes salads, pizza and gelato from Gelati in Naperville for dessert. From a
set menu of seven to eight pizzas, such as pesto, prosciutto olive, barbecue chicken and Margherita, pizzas are pre-selected by the party host. The oven heats to 1,000 degrees, so it only takes 90 seconds to fully bake a pizza. The pre-chosen pizzas are cooked first, and guests can request to have their favorites remade. Even after the fire is put out, the oven provides insulated warmth for up to two days. The heat is used to bake artisan breads they sell at farmers markets, including the one in Burr Ridge. They also will be on site at the Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville twice a month all summer, cooking individual-sized pizzas for $10.

Extra effort turned SIU-bound shortstop into Downers North leader By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Home runs wow the crowds, but small plays can make the difference in a baseball game. Connor Kopach was a master of making the small, but significant, play. Perhaps nothing says more about the type of player the recently-graduated Downers Grove North shortstop was than a seemingly small play during the Trojans’ sectional championship game against Neuqua Valley. Standing on second base after a single and a walk behind him, a low pitch was short-hopped to home plate. Kopach didn’t hesitate taking third even though the ball landed just a few feet from the catcher. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly. He had a similar play later in the game and had two like it in North’s regional championship win. “He did all the little things that made an impact,” North coach Chad Isaacson said. Being a heady player was only part of what made Kopach such a dominant player. Part of it was the work he put in to become a consistent hitter this season: the plyometric exercises, the weightlifting sessions in the offseason, working with hitting instructor Steve Hayward at Strikes Baseball Academy in Broadview. Another part of was his steady defensive play at shortstop, and yet another part was the way in which he led the Trojans to one of their better seasons in recent memory. With the way he played and the way he carried himself, Kopach solidified himself as a team

leader. He let his teammates handle the vocal duties while he led by his actions. “Troy [Southard] and James [Sheldon] were the ones that usually got on people,” Kopach said. “I’m not much of a talker, so I tried to show leadership by working on the field.” By the time his senior season
rolled around, Kopach was wellversed in what it took to get it done on the field. He started his career as a 5-year-old in T-ball, and he been playing ever since. He upped the ante when he started playing travel ball when he was 11. The next phase will start soon, as he heads to Southern Illinois to continue his career. Isaacson will be sad to see him go, and so too will some opposing coaches. “He was good last year, but he took another step this season and I think he was one of the best shortstops we’ve ever had here,” Isaacson said. “I can’t tell you how many compliments I got from opposing coaches about him. He worked hard and he was well-liked and respected by his teammates and our opponents.”

Chris Botsoe
Zach Burdi
School: Hinsdale Central Year: Sophomore
School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior
A transfer from St. Laurence, Botsoe stepped right into the Red Devils’ lineup and had a major impact. The speedy center fielder led Central’s regulars with a .444 batting average, 25 runs scored and 11 extra-base hits (seven doubles, four triples), and he also had 11 stolen bases. A Louisville recruit, Botsoe committed just two errors.
One of the hardest throwers and most fearsome pitchers in the state, Burdi won four games and struck out 57 on the mound, but he was even better in the batter’s box. The University of Iowa recruit and West Suburban Gold all-conference selection powered a potent Mustang offense with a .418 batting average, three home runs and 31 RBIs.
Mike O’Malley School: Downers Grove North Year: Senior The West Suburban Silver all-conference selection took a big step forward in his senior season. O’Malley finished with a 7-2 record and 1.88 ERA with five complete games, two of which came in the playoffs, including a sectional semifinal win over Downers Grove South.
Mike Papierski School: Lemont Year: Junior Already committed to Louisiana State, this catcher/third baseman was named all-state and South Suburban Blue Conference Player of the Year. The left-handed hitter batted .398 with nine doubles and three home runs and also contributed 34 runs scored and 24 RBIs. In addition, he stole 11 bases, walked 21 times and had just nine strikeouts in 109 plate appearances.

Connor Kopach
Jake Latz
School: Lisle Year: Junior
School: Westmont Year: Sophomore
School: Lemont Year: Junior
Coppin switched from catcher to shortstop toward the end of the season but remained the Lions’ most productive hitter all spring. The Interstate Eight all-conference selection led the team with a .378 average, 24 RBIs and 20 walks, and was among the team leaders in runs scored (29) and stolen bases (13).
Already committed to the University of Michigan, Donovan led the Sentinels in almost every significant offensive category: average (.488), RBIs (40), home runs (four), triples (seven) and stolen bases (28). The slick-fielding and strong-armed shortstop was named Interstate Eight all-conference.
School: Downers Grove North Year: Senior A productive leadoff hitter, steady fielder and quiet leader, Kopach was a linchpin of North’s success this season. He led the Trojans in hits (45), batting average (.441), runs (41), walks (18) and stolen bases (15), and tied for the team lead with three home runs. The Southern Illinois-bound shortstop also earned a West Suburban Silver all-conference selection.
The Louisiana State recruit contributed on the mound and at the plate for the Indians. As the ace of the pitching staff, Latz struck out 78 batters in just 44-2/3 innings of work, compiling a 1.88 ERA. Offensively, he hit .411 with seven doubles, two home runs, 21 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He was named to the all-state team.
Pat McInerney
Danny Mayer
School: Benet Year: Senior
School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior The University of the Pacific recruit produced consistently all spring, with the bat and as a pitcher. At the plate, he finished with a .415 average, a .627 slugging percentage, four home runs and 43 RBIs. He picked up five wins on the mound as he earned West Suburban Gold all-conference honors.
Named MVP in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, McInerney hit .381 with eight home runs and 38 RBIs. He went 6-1 on the mound and led the Redwings to a share of the ESCC title. The all-state pick will continue his career at the University of Illinois.
Honorable Mention Benet: Joe Boyle, Joe Giuffre, Connor Hickey, Kevin Jendra, Chris Whelan
Jean Pietrzak
Mike Rizzo
School: Westmont Year: Senior
Nick Sramek
School: Hinsdale South Year: Senior
School: Bolingbrook Year: Senior
After a tough-luck junior season on the mound, Pietrzak got the results he wanted this spring. The Sentinels’ leader in innings pitched (49.0), he struck out 54 batters and went 7-1 with a 1.22 ERA. The Interstate Eight all-conference selection batted .284 with 26 RBIs, 24 runs and 17 stolen bases.
Rizzo played sparingly as a junior, but stepped up to fill a major role this spring as the Hornets defended their West Suburban Gold conference title. Rizzo played nearly flawless at first base but was even more impressive as South’s No. 1 conference starting pitcher. A vocal leader, Rizzo earned WSG all-conference honors this spring.
Mired in a tough slump much of 2012, Sramek turned it around his senior year. Bound for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, the rangy center fielder led Bolingbrook’s regulars with a .292 average, 17 RBIs, 20 runs, eight doubles and three home runs and was named SouthWest Suburban Blue all-conference.
Ryan Van Volkenburg School: Lisle Year: Senior A four-year varsity player for the Lions, Van Volkenburg was a key piece to Lisle’s run to the state title this season. At the plate, the Interstate Eight all-conference pick hit .360 with 34 runs scored, 22 RBIs, two homers and 17 stolen bases. On the mound, he went 6-1, which included the Lions’ 2-1 win over Teutopolis in the state semifinal game.
Alex Ventrella School: Lisle Year: Senior With a huge sweeping curve ball and competitive edge on the mound, the lefty ace mowed ’em down all year.
