Health providers facing more Medicare patients

ammy Pressley and others in the business of health care can’t say for sure how much they will be paid to provide care to the expanding number of Medicare patients.

But Pressley – director of community, government and public affairs at Cadence Health, the health care organization that runs Delnor Hospital in Geneva – said they know the general direction it’s headed.

“We fully anticipate our reimbursements will continue to decline,” Pressley said.

“We don’t see any remedy to the situation on the horizon.”

Under the Affordable Care Act – known as “Obamacare” by many – providers already were anticipating belt-tightening in response to tighter Medicare reimbursements and other cost-control measures.

Across the country, smaller hospitals, fearing an inability to remain solvent amid the

new environment, merged with larger hospitals with deeper pockets.

That process played out locally, too. Delnor merged with Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield to form the new Cadence system in 2011, and three hospitals in Elgin and Aurora became parts of larger health care groups.

Still other hospitals, and particularly those heavily dependent on Medicare-eligible patients, have laid off workers and reduced services.

However, while health care organizations anticipat-

ed the coming changes under the ACA, this year also has brought an added pinch from the federal sequestration budget cuts, which trimmed Medicare reimbursements by 2 percent.

And the federal Medicare Payment Advisory Commission last week recommended altering the payment arrangements more by further cutting payments by about 5 percent to hospitals and hospital clinics.

Local health care providers said the sequester cuts have had an immediate impact on their bottom lines. At Cadence, for instance, about 37 percent of patients treated at both Delnor and CDH are covered by Medicare. An additional 11 percent are covered

by Medicaid, Pressley said.

STC Class of 1963 to reunite to music

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As part of their 50th reunion, alumni from the St. Charles High School Class of 1963 this weekend plan to belt out tunes the school’s choir sang five decades ago.

And, just as it was when they were in school, their former choir director, Jim Getty, will be in attendance.

Alumnus Greg Schmidt, now of Madison, Wis., said the performance is “really a concert in his honor.”

The concert is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Little Theatre in St. Charles East High School, 1020 Dunham Road, St. Charles. Admission is free.

The concert is part of a weekend of reunion activities, including a gathering Friday evening at Courtyard Marriott; a tour of the old high school, now Thompson Middle School; and breakfasts and dinners at local restaurants, according to organizers.

Alumna Nancy Wessels Robinson said in an email that classmates are traveling

from California, New Mexico, Maine, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Colorado, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania for the weekend. Lars Pedersen, a foreign exchange student from the class’s senior year, is flying in from Copenhagen, Denmark, she wrote.

And at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Medicare and Medicaid also account for about half of its revenue, a spokeswoman at that hospital said.

However, she did not specify how much revenue the hospital stands to lose.

Representatives of the local hospitals said their organizations have responded to the cuts by trimming expenses and attempting to “increase efficiencies.”

At Cadence, Pressley said the cuts have not prompted staff reductions or decreased services.

“We’re growing as a system,” Pressley said. “We’re definitely not contracting.”

At Advocate Sherman, a spokeswoman said the hospital has reduced “supply chain costs” and increased “productivity through new staffing models.”

The cuts also affected phy-

sicians in private practice and clinics, such as Advocate Dreyer Medical Clinic, which operates locally in Aurora and Batavia, as well as Kendall, Will and DeKalb counties.

There, Jon Christofersen, a doctor who works at the clinic and serves on the clinic’s board of directors, said the sequester cuts alone have cost the clinic, which serves more than 700,000 patients, about $750,000 to $1 million a year.

He said the lost revenue has prompted the clinic to eliminate profit-sharing bonuses for its employees this year.

He said the clinic also is unable to pass on higher costs to non-Medicare patients or even uninsured patients to make up the difference because of contracts with insurers that set rates and policies to offer discounts to those paying in cash.

But even as federal regulations further pinch Medicare funding, local health care professionals worried that their burdens will grow as the market changes in other ways.

Pressley noted that nationwide, an aging population is adding 11,000 baby boomers to

Medicare eligibility each day.

And Christofersen said he believes reduced Medicare reimbursements will pull even non-Medicare third-party reimbursements down toward the lowered Medicare rates through the regulated health insurance exchanges created under the ACA. “If Medicare was our only payer, or if all payers come down to Medicare rates, as is expected with the exchanges, we would not have enough income to stay in business with our current structure,” Christofersen said.

But Pressley, Christofersen and others said the health care marketplace is evolving too rapidly to offer predictions that are too draconian.

Christofersen and others said the way doctors and hospitals are reimbursed has begun to change, moving away from a fee-for-service model that encourages quantity of visits or services to a value-based model that Christofersen said could encourage a better quality of care.

“There are still so many unknowns,” Pressley said.

“But our expectation is to continue to plan for declining Medicare revenue.”

Getty, 81, said he and his wife, Joanne, will be in the audience listening.

“It’s a great honor, sure it is,” he said of being invited.

“We’re really looking forward to coming back.”

Getty, who attended the Class of 1960 reunion a few years ago, said he began teaching at St. Charles High School

in 1959 and stayed until the summer of 1966. He taught at other schools but settled in Gettysburg, Pa., in the 1970s so he could work as an Abraham Lincoln portrayer, he said, noting he continues to portray the president.

The former choir director said he still remembers his time in St. Charles. Although he is looking through yearbooks to refresh his memory, he said, “I’m sure that I’ll remember many, many of them [his former students].”

He noted he can’t think of his former students as students anymore, because they are all grown up with careers and families of their own.

But, he added, “the things that connect us will be the same.”

Thousands of DUI records not sent to state from ’02-’08

CHARLES – Former Kane County circuit clerk Deborah Seyller said in fall that her office had about 5,600 DUI cases from 2002 to 2008 that had not been sent electronically to the Illinois secretary of state, as required, according to an official from the secretary of state’s office.

Officials said Seyller blamed a software problem with the circuit clerk’s Jano system. Jano owner Nosa Bridges said Kane County had not paid to update, maintain or repair its system in years.

Seyller did not return a message left at a business phone.

Terry Montalbano, licensing administrator for the secretary of state, said the problem came to light in September, when the office received a batch of old convictions from 2007 and 2008.

“We had a meeting with her Oct. 31, 2012, a telephone conference,” Montalbano said. “That was the first time I had an indication there was an issue. The past circuit

clerk said there were approximately 5,600 cases from 2002 through 2008. They were going through the cases by hand in batches of 100.”

Montalbano said this sort of thing usually happens when an envelope of convictions falls behind a filing cabinet and is discovered later, not Deborah in that volume, Seyller nor over an extended period of years.

“The only thing she [Seyller] told us was they had an issue with their vendor,” Montalbano said. “Everything current was caught up, but they were working in batches of 100 by hand to catch up. ...

We offered her [our] staff to go in and help and speed up the process. She declined.”

Montalbano said in a recent conversation, Tom Hartwell, the current circuit clerk, said the backlog was down to the years 2002 and 2003.

Hartwell did not return a text message seeking comment, and his voice mail was full.

Earlier this week, Hartwell said he inherited the problem when he was elected in November and walked into the circuit clerk’s office Dec. 3.

Montalbano said not every DUI failed to get through, or state officials would have noticed.

The issue is important because as the keeper of records, the secretary of state is supposed to have driving convictions reported within a week, so the office can revoke or suspend licenses, record fines paid, community service and other requirements to get a license back.

Montalbano said anyone who is now getting notices of license revocations had not had adverse action taken against their license for that violation before.

“There is no magic formula,” Montalbano said. “When the record comes in, we have to go manually into every single record and take appropriate action. The good part of this, from the secretary of state’s standpoint, is that the new circuit clerk is aware of the situation, and we are going to work together.”

Man airlifted after Unlocked cars target of North Aurora crash Campton Hills burglaries KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Unlocked cars were again the target of thieves in Campton Hills, according to Campton Hills Police Department reports.

Late last week, five owners of six vehicles reported their cars had been entered overnight. In some cases, the vehicles were ransacked, but no items were removed.

But in other instances, items were stolen, according to reports.

The burglarized cars were parked in the 6N900 block of Hastings Drive; the 39W300 and 39W200 blocks of Cambridge Court; the 39W900 block of Margaret Mitchell Street; and the 7N000 block of Weybridge Drive, police reported.

“Leaving your car unlocked with valuables visible is an open invitation for someone walking by to help themselves to your property. Summer time is especially ripe for theft as school is out, and idle teenagers are out and about.”

A string of car burglaries also was reported last month, prompting Police Chief Dan Hoffman to issue a news release about the importance of locking vehicles. He also advised motorists never to leave valuables in plain sight.

Residents can report suspicious behavior, such as unfamiliar vehicles and people, to the village’s nonemergency line at 630-584-0330.

NORTH AURORA – A 21-year-old man was airlifted after a crash early Wednesday in North Aurora, according to a news release issued by the North Aurora Police Department.

Officers responded to Butterfield Road and Laurel Drive about 3:22 a.m. and found a tan 2002 Jaguar XJ8 with heavy damage in a grassy area about 40 feet south of Butterfield Road, police reported.

Police determined the car was traveling west on Butterfield Road at Laurel Drive when it ran off the road and hit a traffic sign and tree, police reported.

North Aurora Fire Department personnel reportedly removed the driver from the vehicle. The man,

from Aurora, later was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

His condition was unknown at the time of the release.

Butterfield Road was partially closed because of the accident.

Westbound traffic was closed from Banbury to River roads, and all traffic was diverted north on Banbury Road, police reported. The road reopened to all traffic about 7 a.m.

It is believed that alcohol might have been a factor in the crash, but no charges have been filed, according to police.

The crash remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management assisted the North Aurora Police Department.

“Getting into it is one thing. Getting out of it is another,” Burns said, joking about how he’s going to fit in the nonmotorized car. “Maybe they have a shoehorn or something. And I do have a DNR [do not resuscitate directive] if things go wrong.”

Some of her first customers – teens shopping for prom dresses – are returning to Bella Bridal for their wedding gowns, she said, noting that contributes to the sadness of closing.

“We developed a lot of friendships over the years,” Ryan said.

Ideally, she said, she would like to sell the business because it has a strong customer base and good reputation.

The line acts as an overflow route from the southern tip of Depot Pond to a point in the Fox River just north of the city of Batavia’s ESDA garage.

“We do believe we have found a way to engineer around the line,” Dempsey said.

In addition, because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers.

Dempsey said those improvements would qualify for tax increment financing funds from the city.

How to make divorce more affordable BLOOMBERG NEWS How much will Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire chairman of News Corp., and Wendi Deng have to pay for their divorce? A significant sum, no doubt, but chances are pretty good that they’ll be able to weather the financial storm.

Many divorcing spouses have a tougher time of it.

Those amicable enough to use mediators, collaborative lawyers or even do-it-yourself forms can dissolve their marriages for no more than a few thousand dollars. But when terms are contested, bills in the United States typically run $15,000 to $35,000.

The high costs of figuring out a financial settlement were emphasized in a new analysis by a New York state commission on divorce policy. Not

surprisingly, the commission found that squabbling over spousal support, in particular, increases the cost of divorce.

Because judges handle awards inconsistently and unpredictably, divorcing couples are easily frustrated and discouraged from settling, further driving up legal expenses.

So what can be done? One idea is to establish a consistent formula for spousal support – at least for couples in fairly ordinary financial circumstances. A few states have adopted such formulas for the temporary assistance that is often put in place while a divorce is in progress. A bill before the New York Legislature would make the state the first to apply a formula to post-divorce alimony.

Standardization has helped reform divorce before. Begin-

ning in the 1980s, all 50 states reduced litigation by creating a basic structure for child-support payments.

The formula proposed in New York ensures that a spouse pays alimony only if he or she is a much higher earner.

It takes into account the difference between the two spouses’ incomes and ensures that the payee doesn’t end up earning more – or even as much as – the payer. The New York bill is a smart step that we hope will inspire other states to adopt standard, predictable alimony calculations. In all such formulas for divorce, judges need the authority to deviate in specific cases, according to a list of factors that vary by state. Having a formula to start with, though, could help make an uneasy process a little less expensive.

Comparing student surveys – Batavia vs. Geneva A recent Batavia High School survey about at-risk behaviors has led to a firestorm of comments and the punishment of one social studies teacher.

As the Kane County Chronicle has previously reported, Batavia teacher John Dryden was docked one day’s pay after warning his students about their Fifth Amendment rights to not incriminate themselves before taking the survey.

Every parent and student I have spoken to has agreed with Dryden’s actions – so why haven’t most members of the Batavia School District 101 board? My questions to the school board and superintendent – sent via email – were not answered. Nor was an email sent to Dryden.

I asked a 2013 BHS graduate about the survey. She informed me that the survey already had

I asked the student about the fact that the surveys already had names printed on them and whether that caused students to answer questions about illegal behaviors falsely. She informed me that some students did misrepresent themselves due to the interrogative nature of the questions.

I have taken similar surveys at Geneva High School over the years. However, I cannot recall a survey that already had my name on it and asked me about illegal activities. The most

recent survey I can remember required us to write our name and grade, then answer two questions: whether or not we needed to talk to someone in the guidance office about ourselves or another student.

We were informed that – if we did not turn it in – we would be called down to the guidance office.

The survey we were given did not feel intrusive or uncomfortable. If I would have needed to talk with a counselor or social worker about any behavioral issue – whether that behavior was illegal or something concerning my mental health – I would have been able to without being put on the spot.

The backlash surrounding the Batavia survey comes from the fact that, according to the Fifth Amendment to the

Constitution and the Supreme Court’s interpretations of that, you legally have the right to not incriminate yourself. The case Miranda v. Arizona helped define that precedent and set forth the doctrine that anything you say under interrogation can and will be used against you.

I learned about these basic rights given to all Americans this year in my AP United States Government and Politics class. If the Batavia school board would like to argue the students’ lack of Fifth Amendment rights, I highly recommend they read the majority opinion of Tinker v. Des Moines, which states that students do not shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate.

The reason I know so much about these cases is because

my government teacher drilled them into my head so that we would always know when our civil liberties were being taken away. After studying the U.S. Constitution in every social studies class of my high school career, I have only one question for the Batavia school board: Why are teachers allowed, and required, to inform their students about Fifth Amendment protections many days of the school year, except the day when the students’ rights are called into question?

WILLIAM G. WACKERLIN Born: May 13, 1917; in Aurora Died: June 18, 2013; in Aurora AURORA – William G. Wackerlin, 96, of Aurora, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Presence Fox Knoll. He was born May 13, 1917, in Aurora.

When Bill was 16 years old, he worked one year in Melon, Wis., driving a log hauling truck for the W.P.A. He returned home and purchased his first dump truck.

He soon purchased a second truck and put them both to work hauling for the W.P.A. in the Aurora area. Over the years, he expanded his fleet to eight trucks.

In 1947, Bill bought into Fox Valley Gravel Co. His partners were Walt Muller and Hine Leopard. In 1949, he sold out of the gravel business and went to work selling Ford cars and trucks at Aurora Motor Sales. He was the truck manager and won many awards for his salesmanship, including becoming a member of the Ford 500 Club. In 1953, Bill opened a used car lot on South Lake Street called Tru Value Motor Sales.

Bill and his sons operated the business until 1972. Bill then took time off to study for his GED test and his real estate license. He went to work for Bob Crane Realty, and later worked for George Babos Realty until his retirement.

Over the years, Bill bought and sold several farms.

He developed Wackerlin’s first and second subdivisions in Yorkville. Bill was a lifelong Aurora resident and a member of Annunciation Church, the parish council for Annunciation Church and was a lifetime member of the Aurora Moose Lodge 400. Bill will be missed by his family and all the friends he made over his many years.

Survivors include three sons, Clifford (Patricia) Wackerlin of Yorkville, Franklin (Nancy) Wackerlin of St. Charles and William M. Wackerlin of Aurora; two stepsons, William (Lorraine) Draudt of Aurora and Wayne (Mary Ann) Draudt of Orland Park; eight grandchildren, Christine (Doug) Kiest of Sandwich, Vicky (Chuck) Oehler of Brodheadsville, Pa., Scott (Krista) Wackerlin of

Hampshire, Jeff Wackerlin of Concord, N.C., Thomas Wackerlin of Chicago, Brock (Laura) Wackerlin of Stockton, Drew (Jen) Wackerlin of Metamora and Jamie (Dave) Hinkel of Sussex, Wis.; three stepgrandchildren, Donald (Amy) Draudt of Clarendon Hills, James Draudt of Orland Park and Jennifer (Brian) Scully of Chicago; nine great-grandchildren, Ryan and Haley Kiest, Lucas, Logan, Ella, Avery and Brynn Wackerlin, and Carter and Avery Draudt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Glenn F. Anderson, of St. Charles and Geneva, died Wednesday, June 19, at age 95, at Presence Pine View Care Center. Glenn was born in 1917 on a farm in North Dakota. He and his family lived on five other farms before moving back to St. Charles in 1929, where he lived on his grandparents’ dairy farm (now LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve) until 1931.

He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1935. While in high school, Glenn began working for Colonial Dairy. His early responsibilities included washing milk bottles and making ice cream novelties. Later he was foreman of the ice cream production plant and managed distribution to Colonial restaurants and retail outlets.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, primarily in Seattle (coastal defense barrage balloon battalion), and Bath, England, (chaplain’s assistant and supply depot clerk). In the Army, he reached the rank of sergeant and received awards for his marksmanship, mechanical skills and volunteer assignments. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles, where he married Violet Wilson in 1942. At Bethlehem, Glenn was assistant Sunday school superintendent for many years and served on the church council as a member of the music committee, property committee and building committee.

He is survived by six children,

including Christine (John) of Albuquerque, N.M.; Karen (Rob) of Glendale, Calif.; David (Sharon) of Alpharetta, Ga.; Paul (Paula) of Ames, Iowa; Ruth of Geneva; and Richard (Carol) of Elgin. Glenn also is survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and by his cousin, Melvin Peterson of St. Charles.

Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Violet; his parents, Fritz and Mabel; six sisters, Bertha, Christabel, Ethel, Helen, Doris and June; and one brother, LeRoy. Glenn was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin, nephew and uncle. He loved his family, church, community and neighborhood. After retirement, Glenn spent many hours helping family members, friends and neighbors with home and yard maintenance. He also volunteered at Bethlehem church, helping with office and maintenance tasks, day care reading help and projects and driving the church bus. He also volunteered in the community by delivering meals to shut-ins and working at polling places on election days.

Glenn acted his faith every day in his job and while caring for his family, friends and neighbors.

He was well-known and admired for singing solos at church and community functions (often accompanied by his wife), singing in Bethlehem church choir (for more than 75 years), singing in several male quartets and singing in community choruses during the holidays. In addition to music, he enjoyed traveling with friends in the Roadrunners group from Grace Lutheran Church in Lily Lake, and getting together with family and friends in small groups

Tri-City Swing Dance to host Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers

Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers is playing Saturday, June 29, at Water Street Studios in Batavia. The show starts at 7 p.m., and Tri-City Swing Dance is offering swing dancing lessons starting at 6 p.m.

BATAVIA – When Michelle Marquardt Greene moved to St. Charles with her husband, Kevin Greene, they had a hard time finding a place in the Tri-Cities where they could participate in one of their favorite activities – swing dancing.

So in January, they decided to start their own organization, Tri-City Swing Dance. They now teach swing dancing and other types of dances, such as the lindy hop, at A Step Above Dance Academy in Batavia on Tuesday evenings.

“Our desire is to share this wonderful phenomenon with as many people as possible because the friends we have made swing dancing are some of the best we have in our lives, and we want to share that experience with as many people as possible, as well as build that community around ourselves,” Kevin Greene wrote in an email.

The classes cost $5 each, which Marquardt Greene said goes toward bringing jazz and swing musicians to the community. They’ve raised enough money to throw their first big event – hosting the St. Louis-based swing band Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers at Water Street Studios in Batavia on Saturday, June 29.

“They’re electrifying,” Marquardt Greene said. “It’s like you step into a room and you step back into the 1930s or 1920s.”

“Their sound is great – if you close your eyes, you can really imagine you’re back in time,”

The band is fronted by Valerie Kirchhoff, who Marquardt Greene said channels a young Judy Garland when she sings.

The band members dress in vintage-style clothing, as well, she said.

For Marquardt Greene, jazz and swing music never has gone out of style.

“This particular music is just classic. You can always play it, and it will always be great,” she said. “Today’s music is rooted in this old jazz beat.

It’s almost that standard you go back to that you’re able to easily listen to.”

Tri-City Swing Dance focuses on what Marquardt Greene calls East Coast Swing. A group of dancers now meets regularly in Batavia, learning basic swing and the lindy hop in the style of the old Savoy Ballroom dancers in Chicago from the 1920s through the 1940s.

It was through swing dancing that Marquardt Greene and her husband met. They were both in New York and met one another while going out swing dancing with friends. When they moved to St. Charles, they had a hard time finding swing dancing venues, so they decided to start their own.

“The dance itself is, to me, a wonderful example of communication and shared artistic exploration. One thing I love about dancing is that you’re not just dancing with your partner, you’re also dancing with the song your dancing to – it’s a three-part partnership,” Kevin Greene wrote in an email.

Marquardt Greene said she hopes to fill that void in the Tri-Cities by bringing more swing, jazz and blues acts to the area through Tri-City Swing Dance.

Tony Anselmo: I have friends that live out there for this one, so it’s an opportunity to kind of kill two birds with one stone.

I do go to a lot of different conventions, and I always enjoy meeting fans. It’s nice to be appreciated by them.

ES: You’ve been the voice of Donald Duck since 1985. I understand that Clarence Nash, the

It was a long process, so it’s not even an easy explanation.

TA: Walt understood about

putting personality in animation. The Warner Bros. cartoons and the MGM cartoons were based on gags.

Walt understood personalities that an audience can relate to and that are appealing. And that is what makes them timeless and resonate with the audience in a way that you always remember them.

TA: I was his apprentice. So, I was already there as an animator, working on traditional animated features. That’s how I started at Disney in 1977.

TA: Well, when I was 16, I would go in and meet with the animators. I was writing them for advice and talking to them on the phone about what I needed to learn in school to work at Disney.

TA: I was doing other incidental voices, and Donald wasn’t one that I could do, so I think he saw potential.

Besides Clarence Nash, who showed me how Donald sounds, I also had a mentor, Jack Hannah, who was the director of the Donald Duck short cartoons made under Walt Disney.

He was the one who showed me how to draw Donald and animate him. I don’t know if a lot of people know I do both. As an animator, I’ve worked on such films as “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid” and “The Lion King.”

The first one was “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.” That was the first chance I had to draw Donald. Clarence did the voice of Donald in that one, and then a couple of years after that, I took on the voice, as well.

PrintLab opens in downtown St. Charles

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Water Street Studios, a nonprofit art center in Batavia, recently has expanded into St. Charles with a new location in the downtown area.

The Water Street Studios PrintLab, 117 W. Main St., St. Charles, is a roughly 1,000-square-foot space in the basement of Biggby Coffee. It is a place for working artists and families to dive into printmaking mediums individually or in a classroom setting.

“We’re expanding because we’ve run out of space in our current location in Batavia,”

said Jim Kirkhoff, Water Street Studio’s director of development and one of the art organization’s founding members. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s an important element of our mission and something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.”

A major component aiding in acquiring additional space was the grant Water Street received to buy machinery, which expanded the organization’s offerings in the print, ceramics and metal work mediums. Water Street received $9,945 from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley – a nonprofit, philanthropic organization – for a programmable kiln control-

ler, plasma cutter and screen printing equipment.

Water Street also received a $6,000 grant from the Kane County Riverboat Fund program to put toward the art center’s Access program.

The Access program will “make the equipment available to the general public as part of open studio rental or Water Street membership,” Kirkhoff said in a news release.

Kirkhoff is looking forward to working within St. Charles to bridge the gaps between the art communities across the Tri-Cities. “[Water Street] is a regional organization, and we continue to look for ways to bring together artists from all over the region,” Kirkhoff wrote in an email, in which he also

wrote that the expansion goes in stride with filling Water Street’s mission to create a personal and diverse venue for creativity, collaboration, expression and education.

The idea of PrintLab is to allow people to transition from taking classes at Water Street Studios to working on their own, while also providing working artists the space to create without a capital investment, Kirkhoff wrote.

Taking PrintLab to St. Charles was the first step and will be followed by offering classes and other media to the public, Kirkhoff added.

PrintLab eventually will offer lithograph, screen printing, relief printing and digital inkjet printing classes and workshops to the public.

In addition to the classes and workshops, which will be announced periodically on Water Street’s website and Facebook page as the staff continue revamping programs for the new facility, PrintLab also will offer Awesome Art Afternoons – similar to the events at its Batavia location – from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sundays for families to pop in and explore different mediums of art.

“It’s a way to get families working together on a creative project,” Kirkhoff said.

The meat was tender, but not too tender, and the French bread provided robust flavor to the sandwich.

T. CHARLES – Countless couples walk past Tom Campana’s house at 322 Illinois St. en route to nights out or festivals in downtown St. Charles.

Lately, there’s been a similar characteristic in each one: The man inevitably stops near the backyard while the woman strains to push forward.

Just a second, honey. The Blackhawks are on.

Using a high-definition projector he bought from his employer, Campana has screened games throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs on an 8x12-foot vinyl banner affixed to the back porch. Scot Hampel, who lives in the gar-

den apartment downstairs, proudly serves as co-host in what quickly has become the city’s fastest-growing garden party.

“There’s nothing better than watching it on a screen like this,” Campana said.

“It’s like being at a drive-in, you know. Being that big, it’s pretty neat.”

Tenants of the property for a combined 23 months, Campana and Hampel – both working single fathers – discovered heightened entertaining potential in their pad last fall.

They set up the prehistoric version of their display, a bed sheet stapled to the pillars on the back porch, for college football during Scarecrow Fest in October. Out came neighbors, passers-by and

their families.

Through it all, Campana and Hampel have operated under the “more the merrier” credo, never once pondering admission charges and usually offering barbecue, drinks or hors d’oeuvre.

As the Hawks faced the Boston Bruins in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday, the spread included fruit salad, crackers and a salami and cheese tray.

A 12-inch cookie cake – appreciably smaller than the screen and iced with “LET’S GO HAWKS” – lay in wait for later, perhaps a dessert to enjoy next to the patio fire pit.

“It’s not like we party every night, you know. We’ve both got responsible jobs,”

said Hampel, a superintendent with Schramm Construction Corp. in St. Charles.

“But on the weekends and stuff, it’s like let loose. We’ve got a gorgeous yard here close to town.”

The yard, near public parking and the intersection of 4th Street, features ample seating space on the patio or lawn, plus enough room to set up a bags game, as was the case Wednesday.

Weekend crowds are always bigger, and Campana and Hampel expect more of the same for Saturday’s Game 5, when they likely will rent a porta-potty for guests.

The sound system operates through speakers at a loud but nonintrusive level.

GENEVA – The Cougars mentioned Boise far less frequently as the first half of the season progressed.

In early April, they referenced the parent Cubs’ Short-A affiliate as a proving ground, the place where much of the Kane County roster shined in 2012.

By mid-May, Boise was a less-considered locale as the clubhouse grew acclimated to its more metropolitan home surroundings.

With the second half of the season set to open today, the capital of Idaho suddenly has resurfaced on players’ lips. No, the Cougars aren’t yearning for the Northwest League, but they would like to recapture what boosted them in the homestretch of last season after a 30-36 first half in 2013.

“Absolutely,” reliever Eddie Orozco said. “I mean, this is kind of the same group we had last year in Boise.

And our first half was miserable. We were bad back in our first half, and the second half was a completely different story. So I expect nothing but the same results this year. We made a push to the championship game. We were three outs away, so you know, I’ve got a confidence in this club we have.”

That’s been the refrain throughout the first season of a two-year player development contract between the Cubs and Cougars.

This week’s Midwest League AllStar game affirmed preseason chatter surrounding the core of top prospects on the Cougars’ roster, as six players suited up for the Western Division team.

Right fielder Bijan Rademacher, a 13th-round pick of the Cubs a year ago, was one of them. While he might not have registered as prominently on the early radar as some teammates, his breakout proves the depth of talent in the clubhouse.

With 70 games to go and a pair of second-half playoff spots up for grabs, however, the Cougars know it’s time to cash in.

A run-scoring double from Misner in the second gave Post 342 a 3-0 lead and Huskisson’s two-run single to left pushed the hosts advantage to 10-0 in

the third.

“We had a really good day at the plate,” Peterson said.

“Guys were really seeing the ball well and they were sitting back and driving pitches out of the infield, so it was good to see that.”

A bases-clearing, three-run single from Geneva’s Dan Berendt in the fourth highlighted Post 342’s second seven-run frame as the team improved to 8-2-1.

“We didn’t quit and everybody kept fighting,” Peterson said. “So hopefully this will carry over to the next game.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles American Legion Post 342 baseball team struck early and often in its 17-2, five-inning victory against Richmond-Burton on Wednesday night at St. Charles North.

A day after playing to an 11all, six-inning tie after trailing New Lenox, 11-1, Post 342’s potent offense continued its assault on overmatched R-B as it connected for 16 hits, including six doubles.

“It’s nice to win a laugher,

but they’ve got a young team over there so you never know what they’re going to show up with,” Post 342 coach Dale Wilderspin said. “Obviously that worked against them, but I give our guys a lot of credit and they played really well.”

Along with its offensive barrage, Post 342 starting pitcher Collin Peterson (St. Charles North) was equally impressive as he retired the first 11 batters in a row before giving up a fourth-inning single to Richmond-Burton’s No. 3 hitter.

BOSTON – Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw is happy to take on towering defenseman Zdeno Chara, so it came as no surprise when he challenged those who questioned his teammate’s toughness.

Namely, former Hawks forward Tony Amonte, who criticized Marian Hossa for missing Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final because of an upper-body injury. Regarding Hossa, Amonte told a Boston radio station that during the finals, “I think you play until you can’t play anymore.”

Shaw snickered as he described Hossa to anyone who didn’t know the 14-year veteran. Hossa returned to the lineup Wednesday for Game 4 and joined a line with Michal Handzus and Patrick Sharp.

“He’s a warrior, man,” Shaw said. “He’s played a lot of hockey. It’s unbelievable how much he’s played and how much he battles and what he battles through. He’s a great player.”

That message resonated throughout the Hawks’ locker room.

Plenty of former players such as Denis Savard, Eddie Olczyk and Troy Murray rou-

tinely visit the locker room and mingle with players. The same cannot be said for Amonte, who played for the Hawks from 1993 to 2002 in addition to stints with the New York Rangers, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames.

Hawks forward Patrick Kane said Hossa’s toughness could not be questioned. Hossa has played in 1,018 regular season games since entering the NHL in 1998 with the Ottawa Senators.

“A lot of those guys can say what they want, but they don’t really know what’s going on and what the situation is,” Kane said. “Sometimes, if you don’t know what’s going on, you’re better off to not say anything at all and just let it play out the way it is.

“It’s the Stanley Cup Final.

Everyone is playing through injuries, bruises and scars, whatever it may be. Everyone is trying to do their best to get out there and play as best as they can.

“Sometimes, it’s just something you can’t do.”

Heat, Spurs ready for ‘decisive’ game

MIAMI – Depending on your perspective, the Miami Heat completed an epic comeback or the San Antonio Spurs suffered a stunning collapse in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. What everyone can agree upon is that the best thing in team sports is up next.

Tonight, the Heat and Spurs meet here in a decisive Game 7. It’s a one-game showdown to close a championship series that’s been among the most compelling in league history.

No other ending would have sufficed.

The Heat and Spurs haven’t just played inspired basketball.

They’ve provided great theater: tragedy and triumph all in 48 minutes (a little longer in Game 6).

We’ve seen a villain, a hero, failure and redemption. And that just describes the performance of Miami’s LeBron James. Both teams are capable of nailing the final act.

The best players star on this stage. During his 12 Finals appearances, Boston’s Bill Russell played in five Game 7s. He took home five titles. Willis Reed’s gutsy performance in 1970 is part of NBA lore, but not as many people remember that Clyde Frazier scored a gamehigh 36 points in the Knicks’ Game 7 victory over the Lakers.

In 1988, James Worthy dropped 36 points on Detroit to help the Lakers become the first repeat NBA champion since Russell’s Celtics accomplished the feat in 1969. No wonder they called

him Big Game James.

Miami has one as well. For LeBron James’s critics, every game is a referendum on his career. He should have received a lot of votes after his last game.

The country’s most scrutinized athlete scored 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime combined as Miami overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit in Tuesday’s 103-100 victory. James overwhelmed the Spurs while leading a furious rally. Don’t expect him to let up now.

“At the end of the day, it’s the last game of the season. You have to muster up all the energy that you might have,” James said. “It’s not about X’s and O’s at this point. They know what we’re running. We know what they’re running. We know their personnel. They know our personnel. It’s about getting stops defensively, staying in it mentally, not turning the ball over and making a few shots.”

That seems simple enough.

History, however, tells us you don’t want to play on the road in Game 7s of the Finals. Visiting teams have a dreadful 3-14 record. The Washington Bullets were the last road team to win a Game 7 – in 1978. That’s a serious home-court advantage.

Hosting Game 7 is the Heat’s prize for having the NBA’s best regular season record, “and if you said . . . we could decide this season with a Game 7 in our building, every single one of us would take it,” Miami Coach Erik Spoelstra said. “You know, they’re the best two words in team sports: Game 7.”

Eric Schelkopf: You guys are really generating a buzz. The video for “The Biggest Mistake” has more than 67 million views.

What do you think about the video connected with people?

Danny Espinosa: Yeah, I don’t know. I can’t explain it.

It’s a very relatable song.

It’s kind of a universal song.

It’s something that happens to everyone. I would have been ecstatic if it hit 100,000 views.

There’s only so much you can do. And then you put it out on the Internet, and see if people gravitate towards it or not. It just so happens in our case they did.

ES: It seems like YouTube is almost like radio these days.

DE: Definitely. A lot of people don’t even buy albums anymore. They just look up the song they want to hear on YouTube and listen to it.

Introduce solid foods for infants at 4 to 6 months Dear Doctor K: I’ve started giving pureed solid foods to my 2-month-old daughter. My sister doesn’t think this is safe. What’s your opinion?

Dear Reader: I agree that it’s too soon. Pediatricians advise waiting until a baby is 4 months old to introduce solid foods. You can even wait a bit longer. Breast milk or iron-fortified infant formula provides all the nutrients your baby needs for the first 6 months.

There is no proven benefit from introducing solid foods before 4 months, and there are risks.

Babies younger than 4 months are not physically ready for solid foods. They usually cannot sit up by themselves or hold their heads up well. Also, the muscles in the mouth that help guide solid food into the back of the throat and then down into the stomach are not fully developed.

This means that when they try to swallow solid foods into the stomach, the food can drop down into the lungs, not the stomach.

That’s called aspiration, and it can cause pneumonia.

Giving solids before 4 months may increase the risk of obesity, Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, although these disease links are

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff not solidly established. It may also increase the risk of eczema and of food allergies. Breast-fed babies who start solids early tend to stop breast-feeding sooner. Given all we know about the health benefits of breast-feeding, that’s not a good thing.

Most babies develop the ability to eat solid foods at 4 to 6 months.

But even when your baby is ready, learning to eat solids takes time and practice.

Before you begin, talk with your pediatrician. Most recommend one of the iron-fortified infant cereals, such as rice, oatmeal or barley, for the first food. These types of cereals are least likely to cause allergies. Foods rich in vitamin C, such as orange juice, can help the absorption of iron.

There is no value, and there is potential harm, from adding either salt or table sugar to the food.

You will still be giving the baby milk or formula as you gradually introduce solid foods. Be careful not to feed the baby too many

calories. Your pediatrician or a nutritionist can help you plan.

Watch for symptoms of allergy, such as rash, wheezing, stomachache, diarrhea, gas, fussiness or vomiting. If you notice any of these things, stop giving the food in question and consult your pediatrician.

Also keep the following in mind as you start your baby on solids: • Add only one new food at a time. Wait five to seven days between new foods so that you have time to watch for a possible allergy.

• Do not give honey to your infant before 1 year. Honey can cause life-threatening food poisoning (botulism).

• Wait until your child is at least 3 years old to give small, round or hard foods that can cause choking. Examples include grapes, raw carrots, popcorn, hot dogs, raisins, nuts, seeds, jelly beans and other hard candies.

Chances would be better if you asked for $3 and learned to budget your money. Be thankful that you have a fair allowance. Many teens would be thrilled to have $15 a week spending money.

I agree with your parents refusing to say yes when you inquired about getting a part-time job. You are considered a fulltime student, and this should dominate your time.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Dr. Wallace: My best friend is 17 and very pregnant. She and her boyfriend were planning to get married a month ago, but he was killed in an automobile accident five months ago. The baby is due in about a month. I received a call from my friend’s cousin inviting me to a baby shower for her and I told her I’d be there.

When I told my mother about the shower, she said she had never heard of a baby shower for an unwed mother. She said she wouldn’t keep me from going, but she would prefer that I wouldn’t.

She thinks that the shower is honoring someone who committed a huge sin. I’m going to attend, but I’d like to know what you think about this.

Dear Abby: The letter you printed from “Gun-Shy in South Carolina” (March 5), about the antics of her gun-toting, alcoholic father-in-law, caught my attention. I’m a former mental health clinician and program inspector. I discussed that letter with a friend who is a psychiatrist.

“Grandpa” has probably already violated a municipal ordinance regarding discharging a firearm in corporate limits. I agree with you that he has endangered his grandchildren. My friend advised that, according to the local interpretation of mental health statutes, Grandpa might be eligible for involuntary commitment and evaluation in a psychiatric facility. He could be disarmed by the police, if necessary.

“Gun-Shy” should heed her motherly instincts, stay home and refuse to visit Grandpa until he enters treatment. Otherwise there’s a high probability that she will mourn the loss of one or more dead children.

Grandpa seems to think that booze and guns make him brave.

More on watching those extra losers

At the bridge table, the few who watch are the envy of the many who look but do not take the next vital step.

The play theme in today’s deal catches out many less experienced players. They do not watch their losers or then work out how to eliminate the one that they cannot afford.

South is in four spades. West leads the heart queen. How would a watchful declarer play?

North used a transfer bid. On the next round, he was borderline between rebidding two no-trump and three no-trump.

He was swayed by the good spade-suit quality into jumping to game. (Do not commit your side to a high-level spade contract unless you know of at least an eight-card fit. Here, South might have only a doubleton spade.) South, despite his 4-3-3-3 distribution, corrected to the nine-card fit. Note that three no-trump would fail after a heart lead. Those missing aces are fatal.

An observant South will see four potential losers: one in each suit. It is impossible to do anything about the three aces, so declarer must work out how to avoid conceding a heart trick.

If South plays a trump at trick two, East should win and return a heart, condemning the contract. Instead, declarer must lead a club at trick two. Suppose West ducks this trick, takes the second club, and plays another heart. South wins and cashes his last club, discarding dummy’s remaining heart. Now, finally, it is time to tackle trumps.
