legends,” Ashley said. “We packed the Jeep up, threw the guitars in and brought our mom along as a photographer.” The trip started in Hinsdale, went to Wisconsin, Toledo, Ohio, Nazareth, Philadelphia, New York City, Arizona and San Diego. The sisters took a national park adventure in Yellowstone, with the last stop coming in April at the Inn and Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe, N.M., and a visit to the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs. weird. Of all places, it happened to Brittany and Ashley while visiting the notorious Sleepy Hollow with a scene that could have been from “The Ring.” “While we’re watching this turtle investigate us, this child pops out with no one else around, not a car anywhere, and our mom was with us at this point. She just starts talking to him and says, ‘Hi,’’’ Brittany said. The trip was to go around and talk with American legends, musicians or people in the community, but in the end, they said it became

more about learning about themselves and knowing they could go on this adventure. “Whatever your dream, aspiration, interest – don’t wait until you’re too old to do it; just do it now and find a way,” Brittany said. Whether it’s driving veterans in the local Fourth of July parade or going for a joy ride, the Jeep always will be a part of the Hill sisters’ lives. “You just look at a problem, figure out a way to solve it, and the Jeep can be figurative or physical in the sense that it can get you there,” Brittany said.

HINSDALE – Their grandfather drove a Jeep in the Army, and one of their first Christmas presents was a motorized, flame-red Power Wheels Jeep. To them, the car is a symbol of freedom – a vehicle that could go anywhere and take them anywhere. And it did. “We actually have this old family video in which our parents are teaching us the word Jeep,” 24-year-old Ashley Hill said. Last year, after the Hinsdale Fourth of July parade, Ashley and her sister, Brittany Hill, set out on a cross-country Jeep Wrangler adventure to local landmarks, including Corner Bakery, Starbucks and the Hinsdale Public Library. “Growing up here, you know families, you run into old teachers, and that’s what’s so cool about a town like this – the heritage,” Ashley said. Brittany, 27, is a graduate of Nazareth Academy, but before Ashley could finish high school, the family moved to Arizona. Both eventually attended and got degrees from Arizona State. The sisters said their roots always have been in Hinsdale because they routinely visit family, especially in spring and summer. After college, the sisters got jobs promoting Jeep across the country. Music also spoke to the Hills and influenced them on their Jeep journey, including the song “The Weight” by The Band, which is written about a trip to Nazareth where Martin guitars are made. Andrus family remembered after Darien murder-suicide By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Four caskets formed a U-shape at the Gerharz-Cappetta Funeral Home in Lemont on Monday as grieving family and friends remembered the four members of the Andrus family. The caskets were decorated with flowers and photos, mostly of the family together on vacation or enjoying the holidays. A note basket sat atop each one, and of the 100 or so people who came during the day, someone left David a Diet Pepsi.

It was difficult to believe the same family in the photos were victims of tragedy. Jeana Andrus, 48; Jessica Andrus, 22; Jennifer Andrus, 16; and David Andrus, 50, were found shot to death at their home June 11 in unincorporated DuPage County near Darien. According to autopsy reports, the women’s deaths have been ruled homicides, while David Andrus’ death was ruled a suicide. The funeral was Tuesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Pictures were on display, and Turner had his brother, who is a priest, come and perform a service that evening. “[Jeana] would basically give you the shirt off her back when she really couldn’t afford the shirt,” Turner said. Jessica is a Class of 2011 alumna of Hinsdale South High School, while Jennifer was a student in the Class of 2015, Principal Brian Waterman said. It still is unknown what the motive was in the murder-suicide. David, however, was a former employee of Midtronics in Willowbrook. According to an emailed statement from the company, the employment of David Andrus recently had been

“terminated for cause” from the company. Any details surrounding his employment would not be released publicly to protect confidentiality. “Midtronics employees are like family and we mourn this tragic loss of life. Midtronics extends our thoughts and sympathy to all those impacted and have made grief counseling available to our employees during this difficult time,” the statement said. Turner said proceeds from the memorial over the weekend went to funeral costs. He could not say enough about Jeana’s character and how well she was liked. “She was very giving, and if she could do it, she’d help you,” Turner said. “That was Jeana. Everybody knew her.”

OAK BROOK – Butler School District 53 heard a report on the planned use of iPads in kindergarten though third-grade classrooms during a school board meeting this month. The iPads would be used, for example, to introduce and reinforce phonemic awareness and intervene with students falling behind in kindergarten; for literacy and math skill building in grades first and second; and to create content through movie-making, story books and QR codes in third grade. Co-technology directors Barbara Rebecca and Steve Ryan presented information June 10 about how iPads are

used in neighboring schools, how the devices would be selected and managed, and how teachers would be trained and the program assessed. The board favored the iPad but wanted to upgrade to the most recent model and asked whether the PTO could contribute to the purchase. Members also wanted the technology committee to provide a report on which apps and software are used on the iPads and PCs.

WILLOWBROOK – It was the difference in school systems in the United States and Europe that caught Jana Conev’s attention. “I really wanted to get to the bottom of who was doing the better job,” Conev said about her most recent trip abroad. The owner of Conev’s Cradle Infantcare Inc., an equal-opportunity state-licensed child care home in Willowbrook, recently paid a visit to the Czech Republic to visit four schools. She has been to the country several times because she has friends and family there, but this trip was for business. She wanted to see the differences in schools to gauge whether she could incorporate anything into her own day care. It was Conev’s second time visiting, the first since 2001, with the purpose to compare schools. Conev landed May 10 in Prague, and five days later, she visited Stredisko Sluzeb pro Rodice a Deti-Jesle. Conev saw remodeled school kitch-

ens and cafeterias. “When you walk into the preschools, the thing that knocks your socks right across the room is the incredible aroma,” she said. She also was astounded by the manners and etiquette of the children. She said kids as young as 4 and 5 were using a knife and fork, eating off plates. “They were eating like little adults,” she said. “They were very polite and quiet at the table.” Conev, who prides her day care on nutritional homecooked meals, said she will begin teaching table manners, serving meals on plates and teaching kids to fill up their forks with all the food on their plates. “This is the European way of eating where your mouth gets a party with each spoonful,” she said. “The idea is the blending of all the flavors and textures.” Through all of Conev’s travels, she covered more than 300 miles, toured four schools and squeezed in sightseeing whenever she could. She said she plans to stay in touch with the

Treat American flag with respect As spring turns into summer in York Township, I cannot help but view June and July with “patriotic” eyes. In honor of our observation of Flag Day on June 14 and of Independence Day on July 4, I would like to share with you some etiquette or standards of respect for our nation’s flag. The National Flag Code was adopted at the National COMMUNITY Flag Conference on June VOICE 14, 1923, for the purpose of John W. providing guidance, based on U.S. Army and Navy proValle cedures, relating to display of and associated questions about the U.S. flag. In 1942, Congress passed a joint resolution and the Flag Code became federal law. As a result, exact rules for use and display of the flag are included in the U.S. Code – 36 USC 176 deals specifically with respect for the flag and contains instructions on how the flag is not to be used. The flag never should be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal. The flag should not be used as a drapery, covering a speaker’s desk, draping a platform or any decoration in general. The flag should not be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard. The flag never should have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure or drawing of any kind. The flag never should be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything. When the flag is lowered, no parts of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. If you have a flag that is worn and needs to be properly disposed of, you can bring it to the supervisor’s office at York Township Hall, 1502 S. Meyers Road in Lombard, and we will arrange with one of the veterans organizations we work with to dispose of the flag respectfully.

Students at Walker School in Clarendon Hills recently performed a “flash mob” for their retiring teachers. Cindy Michaelis, Lynn Kastholm and Sheila Chatham were surprised May 31 with the dance performance. “How wonderful and truly touching,” said Kastholm, who is retiring as a fifth-grade teacher after 15 years with District 181. Good luck to all. District 86 is attempting to be more transparent with the public by posting documents to the district’s website at the same time board members have access to it, instead of after meetings. This is a step in the right direction given the district’s past issues with transparency. We’re looking forward to improved access to public information.

ket research firm. “They said they thought I had a real good idea,” Dana Fort said. “But first it had to have a name. I was joking with my husband: ‘We should call it a Poopoose.’” They patented Poopoose and found a Chicago manufacturer who saw the potential. Dana Fort said 15 Poopooses have been pre-ordered, and the couple has ordered another 250 from the manufacturer. Dana Fort said they hope to expand the line by offering covers for the Poopoose with various patterns. On July 1, buyers can pick it up on Amazon, and two stores will carry it: Crib to College in Naperville and Fly Right Gifts Inc. in Berwyn. The cost is $49.99. Laurie Richter, owner of Fly Right Gifts Inc., said she is waiting for her first order of the Poopoose. “I’ve been telling people about it and it seems like this is going to revolutionize the changing of a squirming baby’s diaper,” Richter said. Dana Fort, a customer of the store, approached Richter

Some people wrestle alligators; others, bears. But for moms or dads who have changed a diaper on a smiling, squirming bundle of joy; bring on the alligator. Former Berwyn resident Dana Fort may have answered the prayer of many diaper changers by coming up with a solution: the Poopoose. Potty humor aside, Fort’s invention has more to do with safety than making it easier to change a diaper. Fort, who has a dental practice in Hinsdale, was dressed for work and changing her six-month-old daughter before heading for the office one day. “I had a real problem changing her diaper. She would squirm on the changing table and nothing seemed to work,” Fort said. “One day, she almost fell off the changing table, and I got covered in poo.” She called her husband, Brian, an emergency room physician at Christ Hospital, and told him the story. Working in an emergency room, Brian Fort has seen injuries involving infants who have suffered a fall. The Fort’s agreed there had to be an easier and safer way. “I tried Googling to see what I could do to make it safer,” Dana Fort said. Dana Fort found the seed to an idea in a device in the medical field called a papoose board, which temporarily secures a patient and limits freedom of movement during a medical procedure. Using the idea, Fort created a prototype from the baby’s changing pad. On the Poopoose website, the board is described as, “a firm foam insert surrounded by soft foam [that] provides gentle support for baby. Soft and adjustable swaddle straps securely hold baby to the firm insert and keep baby from squirming, rolling over, and falling off the changing table.” Dana Fort showed her idea to her aunt, Nada, and uncle, Peter Bradbury. Both work for A.C. Nielsen, a mar-

Villa Park artist spreads Blackhawks pride By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Hockey fever is in the air with the Chicago Blackhawks playing in the Stanley Cup Finals. Locals are sporting their Hawks sweaters, hats and T-shirts; homes and businesses are displaying their Blackhawks flags, banners and paraphernalia; and on Oakland Avenue in Villa Park, there’s a village fire hydrant with a fresh coat of paint and as much hockey spirit as the rest of town. About two weeks ago, 20-year-old Michelle Karges put the finishing touches on a hydrant made to look like Tommy Hawk, the Blackhawk’s official mascot. She and her family decided last year they wanted to participate in the village’s Adopta-Hydrant program, which allows residents or businesses to decorate local fire hydrants, with the proceeds supporting the Villa Park Fire Department. They got the OK to start painting this spring and started developing their design. “My family, we’re pretty big Blackhawks fans,” Karges said. “We wanted to do something Blackhawk-related.” Karges, who will be a junior at Iowa State University in the fall and is majoring in graphic design, said she primarily was responsible for painting the hydrant but had help from her family and a

Residents may be throwing out important FEMA aid application By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com When the rains and floods hit Illinois in April, millions of DuPage County residents were affected, some drastically. Homes were damaged, property was destroyed, business saw loss – and sometimes worse. DuPage County eventually was awarded flood-recovery assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. While many residents could be eligible for aid consideration, some may be leaving money on the table because

they assume they won’t qualify. According to the Small Business Administration media guide, the administration has been covering disaster assistance since 1953, providing low-interest loans to businesses, renters and homeowners. When a resident or business registers with FEMA, they are given a FEMA application and an SBA form. Many overlook the SBA as a possible recovery option because of the “business” portion of their title. The difference between the two programs is the SBA offers low-interest loans, while

FEMA gives grants that do not need to be repaid and are offered only to individuals. Still, Dawson said, when disasters strike, every bit of money can help. Dawson said he reviews all SBA applications and tries to make a decision about each one within 18 days of receiving it. Acceptance into the program is nonbinding, and there is a 60 day period to decide after approval, Dawson said. According to the most recent numbers, 4,157 people in DuPage applied for aid of some kind, said David Gervino, a public information officer at

the DuPage Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The deadline for FEMA and SBA grants is July 9. Residents can apply for an SBA assistance loan or FEMA grant at the disaster recovery center at the Lisle Police Department at 5040 Lincoln Ave. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and no appointments are necessary. Additionally, residents can register for disaster relief at www.disasterassistance.gov or call FEMA’s toll-free hotline at 800-621-3362.

Restaurant reviews

Try something different at Mollie’s Public House RIVERSIDE – When I stepped into Mollie’s Public House in Riverside, I was in a contrarian mood. Feeling like I had settled into a rut of always ordering the same sorts of meals no matter where I went, I was resolved to try something out of character. Something I normally would reject. I perused the menu and forced myself to overlook enticing options, such as the buffalo wrap, classic Reuben and half-pound burgers. All sounded great, but I needed something different. Then I came across “Big Bad John.” The description read: “Roasted pork loin wrapped in bacon, stuffed with corned beef and Mollie’s sauce topped with cheddar cheese and a pineapple slice, served on a pretzel bun. Accompanied with our hand-cut french fries.” Pork loin. Bacon. Corned beef. Cheddar cheese. With a pineapple slice. I safely could say I never had eaten anything like it. My dining companions

opted for more standard fare, a burger and the shepherd’s pie, and both looked terrific. They’re on my to-try list the next time I stop by Mollie’s. But the Big Bad John sandwich dwarfed all other food options. It probably is the largest sandwich I ever have attempted to consume. I wanted to finish it – who wants to let pork loin go unfinished? – but it was such a massive amount of food, I couldn’t manage it. But I certainly got my money’s worth, and my taste buds were pleased by the savory combination of meaty flavors and the occasional hint of pineappley sweetness. Since my visit, Mollie’s has posted a summer menu online that replaces such heavy, cold-weather options with lighter fare. Most notably, it offers a slew of salad choices, including a grilled vegetable salad with asparagus, squash, zucchini and red pepper, and a fregadero salad (fregadero is Spanish for kitchen sink) that has more ingredients than I

Pork loin, bacon, corned beef, cheddar cheese, pineapple ... there’s a lot to the “Big Bad John” sandwich at Mollie’s Public House. have space to list here. The interior at Mollie’s is an authentic pub experience, with dark wood features, but a high enough ceiling that it doesn’t feel cramped. There’s a sporty vibe with TVs mounted above the bar and a soccer jersey on display, plus a great outdoor seating area to enjoy the fresh air and ambiance of Riverside’s downtown. I don’t think I’d get the

Big Bad John again, as much as I enjoyed it, because wolfing down that much protein just isn’t the norm for me. But given that I had a great experience even while going outside my comfort zone, I’m sure I’ll be even happier with some of the options that are more aligned with my typical palate. Assuming I’m not in a contrarian mood again the next time I drop by, that is.

Pizza Via catering delivers the whole brick oven SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Father and son Bob and Alex Ciciora of Downers Grove can stand the heat in the kitchen, but don’t have to, thanks to the portable brick oven they designed to take on the road for a catering business they call The Pizza Via. Bob, an airline pilot by profession, built the oven himself brick by brick, and the traveling business he helms just went full time under the wing of Alex, who completed advanced training in the venerable art of fine pizza. What started as a hobby meant to entertain family and friends took off as Alex’s passion for cooking developed. While still in high school, he enrolled in cooking classes

Where’s the pizza? Phone: 630-457-8807 Web: www.thepizzavia.com

at the Technology Center of DuPage in Addison. At 18, he’d already launched a catering business with a friend. “I’ve always had a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. “I was the kid who shoveled driveways in winter and made lemonade stands in summer.” After graduating from the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn in 2012, he went on to receive certification as a pizzaiola (a pizza chef) from the San Francisco branch of the Scuola Italiana Pizzaioli pizza

school of Italy. His specialty is Neapolitan and classic Italian-style pizzas. The Pizza Via brings its portable wood-fired brick oven to events between April and November. The Cicioras note the dough and sauce are handmade and paired with fresh ingredients for flavorful pizza served buffet style. “I’ve worked in the restaurant business since I was 16,” said Alex, 22. “While that was fun, I love the catering business. People are getting together to celebrate and have a good time. That energy is contagious, and it’s so much fun.” A typical menu for The Pizza Via includes salads, pizza and gelato from Gelati in Naperville for dessert. From a

set menu of seven to eight pizzas, such as pesto, prosciutto olive, barbecue chicken and Margherita, pizzas are pre-selected by the party host. The oven heats to 1,000 degrees, so it only takes 90 seconds to fully bake a pizza. The pre-chosen pizzas are cooked first, and guests can request to have their favorites remade. Even after the fire is put out, the oven provides insulated warmth for up to two days. The heat is used to bake artisan breads they sell at farmers markets, including the one in Burr Ridge. They also will be on site at the Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville twice a month all summer, cooking individual-sized pizzas for $10.

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Brett Moore was setting a strong example for his new boys basketball team before he even knew he had the job. He did is homework, digging into what exactly the Hinsdale South community had to offer. What he found persuaded him to leave the winning program he built at Plano High School for the job as the Hornets’ next head coach. “The more research I did on the school, the district and the basketball team, the more there was to like about it,” said Moore, who will be the third Hinsdale South coach in as many years, taking over for Tanner Mitchell. “The situation at Plano, we had started a good program and had success, so I wasn’t looking to move, but the more research I did on Hinsdale South, the more it seemed like the best place to continue my teaching and coaching career.” Moore, who also served as an assistant or under level coach at Somonauk and Hinckley-Big Rock, will be a physical education teacher when the school year starts. He’s not waiting that long to get a look at his new players. The summer program started last week, and it took just one day for Moore to see he could have something special this winter. “On [that first day] we had 100 kids in the [kindergarten] through eighth-grade program and over 50 for the high school program,” Moore said. The summer program will continue with summer league action Tuesdays and

Thursdays at Riverside Brookfield High School. With four shootouts also on the schedule, the Hornets will play more than 30 games during the summer. Right now, Moore and his staff are busy evaluating their players and figuring out the best ways to utilize the talent at hand once the season starts

up in November. Yet he does have a template of how he wants the Hornets to play. “We don’t want to force anything on the kids. Each year we’ll make changes that will be best for the kids on the team,” Moore said. “Defensively, we want to be a good man-to-man team. That’s something we’re putting an emphasis on, but at the same time we’re in one of the toughest conferences in the state so we have to be able to mix it up. “Offensively, one thing I’m big on is early offense, early ball screens. I think that’s a good offense for us because it doesn’t allow the defense to get set up.”

Next wrestling leader Steve Holland left his post as the Wheaton North wrestling coach to replace the retired Mike Matozzi at Hinsdale South. Holland is a 1985 Wheaton Steve North graduate and one of the Holland top athletes in school history. He spent 20 years as a physical education teacher at North and was the head wrestling coach the past 13 years. “It was a tough decision to make,” Holland said of the move. “But I’m ready to challenge myself once again,

to start over and reinvent myself so to speak. I’m happy with the Hinsdale community and the teachers welcomed me with open arms. I’m expecting great things from the wrestling program, and I’m looking forward to working in the dean’s office.”

More new coaches In addition to Moore and Holland, Haley Nelson was named girls water polo coach and Beth Walker girls swimming coach. Both replace the retired Frank Kuchta. Joshua Zolecki will take over for Billson Rasavongxay as the head boys volleyball coach in the spring.

ALL-AREA BASEBALL

Extra effort turned SIU-bound shortstop into Downers North leader By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Home runs wow the crowds, but small plays can make the difference in a baseball game. Connor Kopach was a master of making the small, but significant, play. Perhaps nothing says more about the type of player the recently-graduated Downers Grove North shortstop was than a seemingly small play during the Trojans’ sectional championship game against Neuqua Valley. Standing on second base after a single and a walk behind him, a low pitch was short-hopped to home plate. Kopach didn’t hesitate taking third even though the ball landed just a few feet from the catcher. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly. He had a similar play later in the game and had two like it in North’s regional championship win. “He did all the little things that made an impact,” North coach Chad Isaacson said. Being a heady player was only part of what made Kopach such a dominant player. Part of it was the work he put in to become a consistent hitter this season: the plyometric exercises, the weightlifting sessions in the offseason, working with hitting instructor Steve Hayward at Strikes Baseball Academy in Broadview. Another part of was his steady defensive play at shortstop, and yet another part was the way in which he led the Trojans to one of their better seasons in recent memory. With the way he played and the way he carried himself, Kopach solidified himself as a team

leader. He let his teammates handle the vocal duties while he led by his actions. “Troy [Southard] and James [Sheldon] were the ones that usually got on people,” Kopach said. “I’m not much of a talker, so I tried to show leadership by working on the field.” By the time his senior season

rolled around, Kopach was wellversed in what it took to get it done on the field. He started his career as a 5-year-old in T-ball, and he been playing ever since. He upped the ante when he started playing travel ball when he was 11. The next phase will start soon, as he heads to Southern Illinois to continue his career. Isaacson will be sad to see him go, and so too will some opposing coaches. “He was good last year, but he took another step this season and I think he was one of the best shortstops we’ve ever had here,” Isaacson said. “I can’t tell you how many compliments I got from opposing coaches about him. He worked hard and he was well-liked and respected by his teammates and our opponents.”

Chris Botsoe

Zach Burdi

School: Hinsdale Central Year: Sophomore

School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior

A transfer from St. Laurence, Botsoe stepped right into the Red Devils’ lineup and had a major impact. The speedy center fielder led Central’s regulars with a .444 batting average, 25 runs scored and 11 extra-base hits (seven doubles, four triples), and he also had 11 stolen bases. A Louisville recruit, Botsoe committed just two errors.

One of the hardest throwers and most fearsome pitchers in the state, Burdi won four games and struck out 57 on the mound, but he was even better in the batter’s box. The University of Iowa recruit and West Suburban Gold all-conference selection powered a potent Mustang offense with a .418 batting average, three home runs and 31 RBIs.

Mike O’Malley School: Downers Grove North Year: Senior The West Suburban Silver all-conference selection took a big step forward in his senior season. O’Malley finished with a 7-2 record and 1.88 ERA with five complete games, two of which came in the playoffs, including a sectional semifinal win over Downers Grove South.

Mike Papierski School: Lemont Year: Junior Already committed to Louisiana State, this catcher/third baseman was named all-state and South Suburban Blue Conference Player of the Year. The left-handed hitter batted .398 with nine doubles and three home runs and also contributed 34 runs scored and 24 RBIs. In addition, he stole 11 bases, walked 21 times and had just nine strikeouts in 109 plate appearances.

Charlie Donovan

Connor Kopach

Jake Latz

School: Lisle Year: Junior

School: Westmont Year: Sophomore

School: Lemont Year: Junior

Coppin switched from catcher to shortstop toward the end of the season but remained the Lions’ most productive hitter all spring. The Interstate Eight all-conference selection led the team with a .378 average, 24 RBIs and 20 walks, and was among the team leaders in runs scored (29) and stolen bases (13).

Already committed to the University of Michigan, Donovan led the Sentinels in almost every significant offensive category: average (.488), RBIs (40), home runs (four), triples (seven) and stolen bases (28). The slick-fielding and strong-armed shortstop was named Interstate Eight all-conference.

School: Downers Grove North Year: Senior A productive leadoff hitter, steady fielder and quiet leader, Kopach was a linchpin of North’s success this season. He led the Trojans in hits (45), batting average (.441), runs (41), walks (18) and stolen bases (15), and tied for the team lead with three home runs. The Southern Illinois-bound shortstop also earned a West Suburban Silver all-conference selection.

The Louisiana State recruit contributed on the mound and at the plate for the Indians. As the ace of the pitching staff, Latz struck out 78 batters in just 44-2/3 innings of work, compiling a 1.88 ERA. Offensively, he hit .411 with seven doubles, two home runs, 21 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He was named to the all-state team.

Pat McInerney

Danny Mayer

School: Benet Year: Senior

School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior The University of the Pacific recruit produced consistently all spring, with the bat and as a pitcher. At the plate, he finished with a .415 average, a .627 slugging percentage, four home runs and 43 RBIs. He picked up five wins on the mound as he earned West Suburban Gold all-conference honors.

Named MVP in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, McInerney hit .381 with eight home runs and 38 RBIs. He went 6-1 on the mound and led the Redwings to a share of the ESCC title. The all-state pick will continue his career at the University of Illinois.

Honorable Mention Benet: Joe Boyle, Joe Giuffre, Connor Hickey, Kevin Jendra, Chris Whelan

Jean Pietrzak

Mike Rizzo

Nick Sramek

School: Westmont Year: Senior

School: Hinsdale South Year: Senior

School: Bolingbrook Year: Senior

After a tough-luck junior season on the mound, Pietrzak got the results he wanted this spring. The Sentinels’ leader in innings pitched (49.0), he struck out 54 batters and went 7-1 with a 1.22 ERA. The Interstate Eight all-conference selection batted .284 with 26 RBIs, 24 runs and 17 stolen bases.

Rizzo played sparingly as a junior, but stepped up to fill a major role this spring as the Hornets defended their West Suburban Gold conference title. Rizzo played nearly flawless at first base but was even more impressive as South’s No. 1 conference starting pitcher. A vocal leader, Rizzo earned WSG all-conference honors this spring.

Mired in a tough slump much of 2012, Sramek turned it around his senior year. Bound for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, the rangy center fielder led Bolingbrook’s regulars with a .292 average, 17 RBIs, 20 runs, eight doubles and three home runs and was named SouthWest Suburban Blue all-conference.

Ryan Van Volkenburg School: Lisle Year: Senior A four-year varsity player for the Lions, Van Volkenburg was a key piece to Lisle’s run to the state title this season. At the plate, the Interstate Eight all-conference pick hit .360 with 34 runs scored, 22 RBIs, two homers and 17 stolen bases. On the mound, he went 6-1, which included the Lions’ 2-1 win over Teutopolis in the state semifinal game.

Alex Ventrella School: Lisle Year: Senior With a huge sweeping curve ball and competitive edge on the mound, the lefty ace mowed ’em down all year. The Interstate Eight all-conference pick finished the year 7-1 on the mound with an ERA (0.96) and WHIP (0.88) both under one while striking out 87 in 65.2 innings. He earned the win in the state championship game, surrendering just four hits and an unearned run over five innings.

It has nourished two generations with quality programs by sharing the simple belief that art has value and can enrich anyone’s life. We proudly celebrate our 20th Anniversary on May 18th with Prom-O-Rama! It will be a festive way to kick off our next decade of the RAC and will truly be a night to remember!” Since 1993, the Riverside Arts Center (RAC) has been providing Riverside , its surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago with exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. The RAC is located in the heart of Historic Riverside. It includes the Freeark Contemporary Art Gallery and a variety of studio space, including a renowned clay studio that has a full range of electric, raku and stoneware kilns. RAC offers more than thirty art classes each term (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall) for children and adults in mediums ranging from clay, to oil painting, to fused glass jewelry, to printmaking. Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.

Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
