An article appearing on pages 2 and 4 of the June 20 edition of the Kane County Chronicle contained errors when discussing how many patients are seen by the Dreyer Medical Clinic and how much money Dreyer could lose this year from reduced Medicare reimbursements. The article should have stated that Dreyer provides care to patients during 700,000 ofice visits per year, and that Dreyer could lose about $750,000 this year from reduced Medicare reimbursements. Incorrect information supplied to the Chronicle led to the latter error. Also, because

Warmer water providing a big help for Quarry Beach

ATAVIA – Doreen Dorr of St. Charles watched as her 3-year-old daughter, Dylan, splashed in the shallow water at Harold Hall Quarry Beach in Batavia.

Dorr and her children are regular visitors at Quarry Beach at 400 S. Water St., Batavia. For Dorr and other families, frequenting the quarry is a summertime ritual.

“It’s more real,” she said.

“They have an actual slide and beach. It’s a nice, real feel.”

As the summer heats up, more visitors are heading to Quarry Beach, something that has become a tradition for generations of families. And last year, the facility enjoyed several capacity crowds, thanks to a combination of warm weather and a new liner installed in an attempt to provide warmer water temperatures.

Before the liner was installed, water as cold as 55 degrees was being pumped in by a well. The liner, which was installed last year, helped the temperature of the water reach 80 degrees last season, officials said.

Kari Miller, the district’s director of marketing and public relations, said the previously frigid water temperatures were beginning to affect attendance numbers. Attendance dropped from 40,000 patrons in 2006 to just 20,000 visitors in 2009, she said.

But there were many days last year that Quarry Beach was at capacity with 1,500 people, Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela said. Records indicate last year’s attendance,

Quarry Beach’s distinct history is part of its appeal. After it operated as a quarry for years, Frederick Beach bought it in 1920 and donated the property to Batavia Township. The township created one swim-

ming area from the six ponds in the quarry and named it the Frederick H. Beach Park and Pool.

The Batavia Park District took over its operation after it formed in 1969.

The problem with the water temperature started after a dam was removed from the adjacent Fox River in 2004, caus-

ing the quarry to leak nearly 250,000 gallons of water a day into the Fox River.

A well was dug to replenish the water and keep it at safe swimming levels. However, the well pumped 55-degree water into the quarry, and the sun could do only so much to heat the water, Miller said.

Niemela said season-pass sales this year are up 10 percent from last year.

“Since we are solar heated, we are 100 percent dependent on Mother Nature,” Niemela said. “We have seen marked improvement since we installed the liner. The improvements made to Hall Quarry Beach have led more people to test it out for themselves, and make it a destination for them for the summer.”

Roxanne Willis of Batavia said she brings her two children, Lydia, 6, and Ivan, 9, to Quarry Beach on a regular basis.

“They love it,” Willis said.

“There’s sand that they like to play in. They always run into friends here. They stay here for three to four hours at a time.”

Willis doesn’t take a dip in Quarry Beach’s pool that often, but she said that Quarry Beach is a unique experience, and she said she boasts about it to her friends.

“I tell other friends in other parts of the country that we don’t have a pool, we have a quarry,” she said.

“The little store that pays you more!”

‘Saints of St. Charles’ given proper resting place

Thursday, he knew less about the 41 people whose cremated remains had been abandoned on a dusty shelf at the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

“For these people, we don’t even have a sentence,” Nelson said to a small crowd gathered inside the North Cemetery mausoleum in St. Charles.

Although the crypt has space for more cremated remains, Russell said he aims not to have any more unclaimed cremains, especially with tools such as www.unclaimedpersons.org.

Russell thanked the few people who attended Thursday’s service, noting how nobody wanted to claim these individuals’ remains.

“Today, we are that someone else,” he said.

Some of the cremains belonged to known prostitutes and those who were homeless, Russell said, but he said it doesn’t matter how they lived their lives.

“Respect goes to everybody,” he said. “Today, we right what was wrong.”

A list of those interred Thursday is available at the Kane County Coroner’s Office, North Cemetery and Yurs Funeral Home.

Next of kin will be able to claim the remains if desired.

Reams buying church lot in Elburn, looking to move across the street

Ream’s Elburn Market has purchased the vacant church parking lot across the street from its current location in downtown Elburn. The Reams say they intend to move their store into the new location eventually.

Until then, once the deal is closed, it will be available as a parking lot for Ream’s customers. the lot as a solution to a perceived downtown parking shortage, and there was some consideration about the village purchasing it.

ELBURN – Janelle Ream said the Ream family has, for years, thought of finding a larger space for Ream’s Elburn Market. It turns out that site will be right across the street.

Owners Janelle and Randy Ream have a deal in place to purchase a vacant parking lot, which is owned by the Elburn-based Community Congregational Church.

Ultimately, the plan is to build a new, larger home for the award-winning market.

Janelle Ream said the store can get crowded at times.

“We have dreams about what we will do with it,” she said.

Ream’s Elburn Market is at 128 N. Main St., on the west side of Route 47 in downtown Elburn. The vacant lot is almost directly across from the market, extending to the north, on the east side of the street.

That lot has been controversial in the village, as the church, citing liability issues, had closed the lot to public parking last year.

The closing date is in July, Janelle Ream said.

From the time of purchase until any building takes place, she said the lot would be used for customer parking.

There would be restrictions. For instance, overnight parking would not be allowed.

Mary Royer, a moderator at Community Congregational Church, said church members are pleased the lot is being sold to the Reams.

“We’re delighted,” Royer said. “I believe they will be wonderful neighbors.”

Ream’s Elburn Market has been in business since 1904. According to its history listed at www.elburnmarket.com, Robert and Phyllis ream bought the business in 1954, and the store has become a specialized meat market.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said the news is good for Elburn.

“We are excited for them and for the village,” Anderson said. “They are an integral part of the village, and they have been for many years.”

Lockyer, who on Thursday was announced as Fermilab’s new director, performed research for many years at the Collider Detector at Fermilab and served as the experi-

ment’s co-spokesperson from 2002 through 2004, along with being a Fermilab guest scientist.

“It certainly is an honor to be selected as director of Nigel Fermilab,” said Lockyer, 60, Lockyer currently director of Canada’s TRIUMF laboratory for particle and nucle-

ar physics and a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of British Columbia. “I would say that it’s not only a compliment to me, but it’s a compliment to TRIUMF, that the search committee recognized the success that we’ve had here, which has been pretty significant.”

Lockyer will start Sept. 3 and will replace Fermilab director Pier Oddone, who will serve in his post until July 1

after announcing last summer he was retiring after leading Fermilab for the past eight years. Fermilab Chief Operating Officer Jack Anderson will serve as interim director starting July 1, following Oddone’s retirement.

Lockyer is arriving at Fermilab just as the laboratory is planning new projects, including the proposed Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment project, which would send a

beam of neutrinos – particles with almost no mass that pass through many types of matter – straight through the earth to South Dakota.

“That is something that could become a flagship experiment for the laboratory,” Lockyer said. “I’m a big fan of seeing that be the best and obviously leading experiment in neutrino physics in the world.

Zoning board panel denies variance request

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Zoning Board of Appeals commissioners on Wednesday unanimously denied a variance for a garage at 422 Washington Ave. in Batavia.

Jeff Nydegger, of Yorkville-based Kendall Partners Ltd. and owner of the property, had asked for the variance to allow the existing detached garage to remain in place.

The garage has a side yard setback of 0.43 feet instead of the required eight feet.

In addition, he asked for the existing stoop accessing the second floor of the garage to remain in place, having a rear yard setback of approximately 19 feet instead of the required 22 feet.

There is a dwelling unit in the garage. Staff investigated the matter and found that no approval was given for the garage dwelling unit, said Joel Strassman, the city’s planning and zoning officer.

WILLIAM G. WACKERLIN Born: May 13, 1917; in Aurora Died: June 18, 2013; in Aurora AURORA – William G. Wackerlin, 96, of Aurora, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Presence Fox Knoll. He was born May 13, 1917, in Aurora.

When Bill was 16 years old, he worked one year in Melon, Wis., driving a log hauling truck for the W.P.A. He returned home and purchased his first dump truck.

He soon purchased a second truck and put them both to work hauling for the W.P.A. in the Aurora area. Over the years, he expanded his fleet to eight trucks.

In 1947, Bill bought into Fox Valley Gravel Co. His partners were Walt Muller and Hine Leopard. In 1949, he sold out of the gravel business and went to work selling Ford cars and trucks at Aurora Motor Sales. He was the truck manager and won many awards for his salesmanship, including becoming a member of the Ford 500 Club. In 1953, Bill opened a used car lot on South Lake Street called Tru Value Motor Sales.

Bill and his sons operated the business until 1972. Bill then took time off to study for his GED test and his real estate license. He went to work for Bob Crane Realty, and later worked for George Babos Realty until his retirement.

Over the years, Bill bought and sold several farms. He developed Wackerlin’s first and second subdivisions in Yorkville.

Bill was a lifelong Aurora resident and a member of Annunciation Church, the parish council for Annunciation Church and was a lifetime member of the Aurora Moose Lodge 400. Bill will be missed by his family and all the friends he made over his many years.

Survivors include three sons, Clifford (Patricia) Wackerlin of Yorkville, Franklin (Nancy)

Funding found for computer upgrade Plan to tap existing funds negates need to borrow for Kane court software

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s government finance officers have found money within the county’s existing sources of income to fund much of the expected cost of updating the computer software serving the county’s court system.

And that, they said, likely will eliminate the need to borrow money for the project.

Thursday, a special Kane County task force aligned behind a plan presented by the county government’s chief

financial officer, Joe Onzick, to transfer $3 million over two years from a little-used county contingency account, funded by a county public safety sales tax, toward the project.

That, together with money already committed to the project from other sources within the county budget, should give the county $6 million to spend.

The proposal from Onzick comes just two weeks after the members of the Kane County Judicial and Public Safety Technology Commission’s finance subcommittee seemed

Onzick said he was unaware that the savings could be used for a project such as the court system’s proposed new electronic case management system.

Officials have discussed for years upgrading the doc-

ument management system, which they say is out of date and dysfunctional.

The various county offices that operate within the court system each solicited bids from software vendors to design and install new specialized document-sharing software for their offices.

Those bids are expected to be submitted in August, at which time county officials say they will have a better idea of how much the project will cost. The funding plan will be submitted to the County Board in coming weeks.

Garden walk scheduled for Saturday

“They are all different,” said Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners member Melissa Hyams, chairman of the gar-

den walk committee. “Many of them have water going through them.”

The majority of them are shade gardens, Hyams said, which inspired the name behind this year’s walk.

There is no start or finish to the walk, which is self-guided.

“You can start with any of the seven,” she said.

CHARLES – The annual St. Charles Fourth of July celebration includes activities throughout the day, ending with a fireworks extravaganza that will best be seen from Pottawatomie Park and Ferson Creek Park.

Graduate students would pay $342.33 a credit hour, while law students will pay $650.99 a credit hour.

Without taking into account any fees or room and board charges, an in-state undergraduate student taking 15 credit hours in the fall and spring will pay $9,071.70 annually.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University has shifted from a state-funded university to a state-assisted one, in President John Peters’ view.

The state has allocated about $93 million to NIU for the fiscal year that starts July 1, roughly the same amount the school received for the fiscal year about to end. Considering that Gov. Pat Quinn wanted to slash higher education funding, the outgoing NIU president said he was delighted at the school’s level of funding.

“We had a flat budget, which was a miracle,” said Peters, who will retire June 30.

On Thursday, the NIU Board of Trustees approved tuition rate increases of 2 percent that will affect new in-state undergraduate students and existing graduate-level students – about 28 percent of students.

NIU’s enrollment is usually around 22,000 students.

State funds will represent 20 percent of the university’s expected $453.9 million in revenue for the upcoming school year. NIU officials have said this is the same amount of state funding received in 1995.

As state funding has dwindled, Peters said student enrollment and retention have been essential, but up to a point.

“As a state institution, our tuition costs are directly correlated to state support for NIU’s operating budget,” Peters said during the meeting. “We cannot possibly, and would not raise tuition to offset the state’s delinquency and support levels, nor should we ever contemplate that.”

Steve Cunningham, acting executive vice president of business, said the tuition increase is based on many factors, including state funding, operating costs and economic indicators.

“We’re looking at a period of conservative tuition increases because of the economy,” Cunningham said. “We have low inflation in the economy. ... Affordability and access are very important. We’re trying to stabilize our rate of growth in tuition.”

NIU officials said the policy – which does not cover graduate, law and out-of-state students – requires them to anticipate costs and funding for the next five years.

“The problem in setting tuition is that we have to set the rate that will accommodate these students for the life of their stay here,” Peters said after the meeting. “... You have to figure inflation and everything else in there, so you’re taking a guess.”

OPINIONS Some boycotts are hard to resist; others can be fun My wife, Tia, is boycotting Tom Cruise.

“I don’t want to support his lifestyle,” she explains, meaning either his womanizing or his proclivity for the-religionthat-must-not-be-named.

“I’m sure that boycotting his movies,” I reply, “will adversely affect his income and lifestyle.”

“You boycott Walmart,” she retorts. “I’ll boycott Cruise.”

She has me there. For years, I’ve avoided shopping there. I’m not saying new Walmarts drop more Main Street stores than Buffalo Bill Cody dropped bison, but I’ve seen them suck in townsfolk easier than dark holes do gravity. Moreover, Wikipedia cites several interests that question the store’s policies, including “labor unions, community groups, grassroots organiza-

Look, Tia and I both know our puny attempts to change a box office megastar’s popularity or megastore’s profits are fruitless. We’re no neo-Thoreaus willing to go to jail for our beliefs; our actions are civil disobedience lite, fat-free, less sodium.

Kind of like my decision a decade ago, after reading Eric Schlosser’s “Fast Food Nation,” to fast from fast-food hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken whatevers and fries.

To that end, I’ve been faithful. Mostly. Recently, after picking up a few ham-

burgers for our dog, Chewball, the fatty, grilled beef scent escaped the bag. At a stoplight, a burger leapt out, tore off its wrapper and clawed its way into my mouth, seducing my taste buds before escaping down my esophagus. Finding me vulnerable and weak, the juicy sandwiches repeated their attack at each traffic light and stop sign thereafter, darn near leaving Chewball hungry when I got home.

Hearing about my beef, chicken and fries abstinence, my students and children look at me like I admitted to wearing barbed wire undershirts. Actually, the decision came easily after reading two chapters in particular.

“Why the Fries Taste Good” reports “ ... the job of the flavorist is to conjure illusions about processed food ... ,” Schlosser writes.

“ ... the manipulation of volatile chemicals ... create a particular smell.” That’s why one whiff of a fast-food franchise beckons better than a witch’s gingerbread house.

“What’s in the Meat” argues not only “pathogens” reside there, but horrifying ingredients added by bored, young, low-paid, little-educated and unskilled workers.

Yuck.

Some potential boycotts fail. Before they were built, stores responsible for shrinking Batavia’s Braeburn Marsh were to be shunned. Our resolution died, however, after visiting Trader Joe’s.

Principled stances have their breaking points, including Two-buck Chuck and Honey Oat Bran Bread.

Some boycotts, however, are forever. A certain seal coating and dethatching com-

pany annually throws its ad, folded in a plastic sandwich bag weighted by two stones, in our driveway. That’s not advertising; it’s littering. For one thing, how do you get rid of those rocks? I’m thinking of finding the company’s address and dropping them off – in its driveway.

So, take a stand, citizens of Fox Valley; you, too, can boycott your least favorite store, company or movie star. It’ll make you feel like my wife, who’s living on Cruise control.

Common cause in education THE WASHINGTON POST Lost in the hysteria being whipped up about Common Core standards is that the movement to infuse new rigor in schools started at the state level. Governors and state education officials, alarmed that U.S. students were being outpaced globally, banded together to develop clear and consistent standards. This sensible and badly needed reform should not be derailed by misguided and misinformed opposition.

Efforts to block the Common Core standards are cropping up in statehouses across the country. They are being fueled, in part, by tea party activists who frame

the issue as one of improper federal intrusion into states’ responsibility for education.

The standards don’t dictate curriculum; rather, they lay out the math, reading and writing skills that students should master from kindergarten through 12th grade.

They are the product of a bipartisan effort, led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, that dates back five years and that relied on research from experts and input from teachers. It was a transparent and much publicized endeavor.

By replacing state standards that vary in content and quality, the Common

Core aims to raise the quality of instruction and ensure that students, no matter where they live, get the educational skills needed to succeed.

By promoting critical thinking and more meaningful mastery of subjects, the standards seek to de-emphasize standardized testing based on rote memorization.

So, it’s discouraging to see states that had originally embraced this effort blink in the face of unexpected political opposition.

As Republican and Democratic governors attest, the Common Core standards will help ensure that students do not leave high school unprepared for the modern world.

It’s important to him. He goes to a personal trainer, he goes to a quarterback coach, and yet he still comes to all of our stuff. He’s a team player.”

Quarterback coach, personal trainer, 7-on-7 team, college camps. The amount of football-related activities Krueger does away from the Marmion campus is certainly impressive. And it’s not just during the season, either.

Rich Harvest lands another international event Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove added to its growing list of events earlier this month when it landed the 2015 Palmer Cup, an international collegiate competition pitting players from the United States and Europe.

The format recalls what arguably is Rich Harvest’s most high-profile hosting role to date, the 2009 Solheim Cup that also features the Americans vs. Europeans format for professional women players.

The U.S. topped Europe, 20.5 to 9.5, in this year’s Palmer Cup, held June 7 to 9 at Wilmington (Del.) Country Club.

Pottawatomie tourney season starts July 9 The summer tournament lineup at Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles begins with the July 9 STC Women’s Tournament, an event that enjoyed a spike in participation last summer when course pro Ron Skubisz and assistant Bill Ogiego made it part of the Tuesday women’s league schedule.

A week later, tournaments for the city’s Little Guys & Gals (July 16) and Junior players (July 17 to 18) follow before the three-weekend Men’s Tournament, which opens July 27 to 28 and concludes Aug. 10 to 11.

vanced to his first open just six days after his mother, Suzanne, died from ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, at age 50.

Her funeral was Saturday.

Shooting a 3-over-par 75 with his father, Ed, as his caddy, Niemiec defeated Jason Pinns and Matt Fazio in a playoff to take the final qualifying spot.

“I’ve been working at it for the last year and a half pretty hard,” Niemiec said. “I didn’t play great, but I played well enough, so it was good.”

A St. Charles East alumnus, Niemiec played collegiately at Bradley for

a time before recently gaining professional status.

“I was definitely looking forward to the tournament,” he said.

The 64th annual Illinois Open will be held July 22 to 24.

Well-equipped: Golf osmosis had nothing to do with French’s area-leading 71 – three shots behind medalist Drew Chuipek of Algonquin – although that’s still a fair question.

A former Kaneland standout, French has spent the past year-plus as a hard goods supervisor at the PGA Tour Superstore, beginning at the Downers Grove location before recently transferring to Schaumburg.

“I like it,” French said. “It’s kind of a golf nerd’s dream, so to say. I definitely am very into the equipment aspect of golf and how everything works.”

That figured, as French credited his round to holding steady. His biggest flub came when he hit a shot out of bounds on No. 18, but the double bogey didn’t do much damage in the face of six birdies.

“Just wasn’t making many mistakes,” French said. “ Really had one bad hole and that was the 18th. Other than that, I played pretty solid tee to green, putted pretty well. Really happy

with how I played that round.”

Their investment in the proceedings still didn’t waver, especially given the trend of higher scores when Royal Hawk hosted qualifiers in 2007 and 2010.

The course isn’t particularly long, but most holes offer well-placed challenges that keep big numbers in play.

“Any time you’re in a qualifier, there’s the pressure of you wanting to play well so you can make it to the championship you’re trying to qualify for,” Carroll said. “But when you know what the number is, you’re always thinking about that in the back of your head “Golf can play with your mind a little, and when you get to be 3-over at one point and you might learn that 3-over will be the cut, then hey, you know you can’t really have margin for more error.”

Cougars channeling Wrigley experience QUICK READ Kevin Druley Right-hander Pierce Johnson isn’t the first Cougars player to ascend the parent Cubs’ minor league system this season.

Considering his draft class, though, the 2012 first-round sandwich pick’s promotion to Advanced-A Daytona on Thursday served special notice to a young clubhouse.

The Road to Wrigley Field consists of more than interstate and gridlock.

Seeing Johnson, outfielder Pin-Chieh Chen (Double-A Tennessee) and others go undoubtedly prompts mixed emotions. Then again, it shows Pierce Johnson players that upward mobility is possible. All they have to do is keep working and wait their turn.

Most teammates who arrived in Geneva with Johnson when spring training broke still keep lockers at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The heart of a potent lineup – Dan Vogelbach, Jeimer Candelario and Rock Shoulders – are there, along with 2012 first-rounder Albert Almora, who joined the club in May after a spring training injury.

Roster moves are the final step in the promotion process. Until they happen, however, many players are channeling a move that didn’t wind up on the transactions wire – an early-season trip to see the Cubs at Wrigley.

“Going to my first Wrigley game, I got an experience of what it’s like to be a Chicago Cub. And then taking that experience and coming here with all the fans coming to see us before we make it to Wrigley,” said right fielder Bijan Rademacher, who hails from California.

“And you can see that they want us to get better, and they want a winning team out there. Their soul is with Wrigley. You can just get that

feeling now, the more you can be around it and the more you open your eyes to it, you get that feeling.”

Although the rest of the Cubs affiliates lack Kane County’s proximity to Chicago, the Cougars are likely to find the same outlook among fans at each of the next levels.

On Thursday, Johnson left Class-A for Advanced-A and got a head start on finding out.

Close to home, Part I: Strolling the grounds of The Wifflot near Batavia this week made it easy to whisk back to my own youth. And the recent

past, for that matter.

While I’m always down for Wiffle ball, stickball is this reporter’s preferred pickup game. It’s best played on the blacktop schoolyards of my native south St. Louis, but any venue will do.

(At least that’s my rationale for keeping gear in my trunk at all times).

Wifflot brass Ryan Pawlowski and Andrew Martinez took me back to the days of organizing my own games.

Buddies dubbed me “The Commish” then since I called everyone each morning – some phone numbers remain

stuck in my head to this day – and kept games on through high school, college and now on visits home.

We didn’t build infrastructure, charge admission or play walk-up music (our 1996 All-Star game pregame mix tape was the closest thing) but the idea was the same.

It’s more about catching up than keeping score these days, but the bat and ball remain the backdrop.

Close to home, Part II: It’s the aim of every assignment to “capture the spirit of the thing,” as fictitious sportswriter Dickie Dunn so sagely put it in “Slap Shot.”

While I hope I accomplished that feat with Thursday’s story on the backyard Blackhawks watch parties of St. Charles residents Tom Campana and Scot Hampel, the ambiance of their arrangement might have struck me most after deadline.

Campana and Hampel’s house is on my way home,

so with the pages out and Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final in overtime, I made a pit stop. It was long enough to absorb the sparkling picture of their high-definition projector – easier than when I first visited the home during twilight hours – before Brent Seabrook’s game winner about midway through overtime.

Self-described “porch fanatics,” Campana and Hampel will reprise their hosting duties for Saturday’s Game 5, and say all are welcome provided guests behave respectfully.

Hawks fans likely won’t pine for the fourth overtime game of the series, but free free hockey looks even smoother on these guys’ 8x12foot vinyl banner screen.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE DAVENPORT, Iowa – Different location, same result.

The Kane County Cougars opened the second half of the season Thursday in similar fashion to the first, losing, 5-3, to the Quad Cities River Bandits.

Playing on April 4 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, the River Bandits won the season opener, 7-2.

On Thursday, Cougars left fielder Oliver Zapata staked Kane County to a 2-0, second-inning lead with a

two-run triple to right.

Quad Cities answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half and single runs in the third and fifth against left-hander Brian Smith.

An Albert Almora sacrifice fly in the sixth accounted for the Cougars’ final run.

The Cougars finished 3036 in the first half, good for sixth place in the eight-team Western Division, 11 games behind first-half champion Beloit.

The four-game series with the River Bandits continues at 7 p.m. today.

Krueger said he has been doing this every week since the season ended. He does it “to try to keep the football mindset all year-round.”

Dedication is clearly not an issue for Krueger, nor is experience after last year’s playing time. It’s easy to see why he and Thorpe are excited for the possibilities of the upcoming season, and it’s also easy to understand how much hunger there is to avenge last year’s outcome.

“We know things happened last year, and obviously that wasn’t what we had planned,” Krueger said. “We wanted to make the playoffs, so 4-5 wasn’t in our head in the beginning when we started camp. But, now we know.

We’ve been there, we’ve had the 4-5 record. Now it’s time to come back, and it’s really time to work at it. And everyone has been working at it, so we’re all really positive and really excited to get at it.”

Though Krueger reports that the recruiting process is going well, he doesn’t want

Hawks’ Seabrook keeps coming up big CHICAGO – If one were to rank the Blackhawks’ top skill players, Brent Seabrook probably would fall somewhere between Nos. 10 and 20.

He’s physical and dependable on defense. That’s why he earns millions.

As for offense? Well, let’s just say he’s more equipped for snowshoeing than speed skating.

Yet on a team loaded with scorers, Seabrook is the one who keeps coming up with big goals.

The latest, greatest score by the Blackhawks’ 28-yearold defenseman arrived in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final. After the Hawks twice squandered two-goal leads against the Boston Bruins to prompt overtime, Seabrook raised his stick and ripped a shot past Tuukka Rask.

Game over. Series even.

At least two more games to go, maybe three.

All thanks to an eightyear veteran who never has scored double-digit goals in a season. All thanks to a player who has scored on only 5.5 percent of his career shots – barely more than one-third than that of Jonathan Toews, who has scored on 15.2 percent of his career shots.

Apparently, Seabrook is some kind of pool-hall hustler who lays low until the playoffs.

“I’ve just been shooting the puck, to be completely honest,” Seabrook told reporters Thursday as the Hawks enjoyed a day off from practice. “You get a chance, you get a lane, and you try and put it on net, and they’ve gone in.

“I don’t think I’ve got ice in my veins or anything like that. I’m just playing a game.”

Yes, it’s just a game. But at this time of year, it happens to be a really, really important game.

Teammates have taken notice of Seabrook’s bigplay ability.

If not for Seabrook, the Hawks’ season might have ended May 29. That marked Game 7 of the Western Con-

Nine games later, Hawks goaltender Corey Crawford marveled at his veteran teammate’s timing.

Seabrook’s goal saved Crawford, who endured his worst game of the playoffs in Game 4 against the Bruins by allowing five goals on 33 shots.

Crawford had a perfect view as Seabrook’s shot hit the back of the net.

“I was pretty pumped,” Crawford said. “It was a bomb. He’s done that for us I don’t know how many times. It was a great shot by him.”

In doing so, Seabrook joined a select group of NHL defensemen.

Only four other blue-liners in NHL history had scored two overtime goals in the same postseason.

They are Leo Reise Jr. (1950, Red Wings), Chris Chelios (1995, Hawks), Niclas Wallin (2002, Hurricanes) and Scott Niedermayer (2007, Ducks).

Reise Jr. and Niedermayer went on to win the Stanley Cup. Chelios and Wallin fell short.

In other words, Seabrook has a 50-50 shot.

Those odds would seem to increase whenever Seabrook and the Hawks go to overtime.

“It’s definitely exciting to score in an overtime game, an overtime goal,” Seabrook said. “But at the end of the day, it’s just a win. And we still need two more.”

Good point.

There were 19 contestants – 10 acts in the junior division and nine acts in the senior division – that

are now set to compete in the 30th annual Kane County Fair Talent Contest as part of a “Pre–Fair-Talent Contest Showcase” at 7 p.m.

July 15 in the Prairie Events Center at the Kane County Fairgrounds, located at Randall Road and Route 64 in St. Charles.

behind the fairgrounds.

Hope you all had a good Father’s Day experience. Probably many had special meals, did some grilling and provided pop’s favorite dessert.

At our house, we went for Plan B. Mister Z’s comrades from his various memberships can report he can usually come up with a main dish – road kill, raccoon (tastes like chicken) or skunk (garlic overcomes the odor). Our goal was that he relax, so we ordered-out.

There was high praise for the chicken (tasted just like it should) from Ka-Bobs on West Main Street. The no-fuss meal took the trail to nearby Dunkin’ Donuts for great coffee and a cheerful wave from Sonny and a dash across the street for some Oberweis vanilla ice cream to go with the strawberries.

Strawberries! The granddaddy of delicious crops ready in June!

Head out to Norton’s farmstand just west of St. Charles. Tomatoes that taste like actual ripe tomatoes are available, as are lots of bedding plants and hanging baskets. (Hint: a choice for a summer birthday.)

Strawberries were all gone the next day, but the timely arrival of a famous Betty Ericson pecan pie from the UMW Pies for Pops sale was reason to keep celebrating.

Another celebration is due for Joe Schelstreet, new St. Charles fire chief. He merited this appointment as a local guy who came up through the ranks. High five, Joe! Speaking of hometown news, there’s time left to get involved with the Heritage Center next week on Saturday June 29, as it holds a major fundraising event, including a pig roast and silent auction. That’s the same weekend that Dunkin’ Donuts is having a grand re-opening party, which includes special prices, games and prizes. Cholesterol aside, both events could make you smile.

There must have been a full moon last week. That traditional presumption that loony behaviors breaks out with lunar regularity led to some interesting anecdotes. Names are changed to

A retired school teacher with a flower name set out to the Delnor complex for a yearly doctor’s appointment. When she arrived – no such physician. In fact, not any physicians. Last I heard, she was telephoning, on hold, seeking a reroute and an explanation.

Another friend, who spells her name with a “y” was seeking to claim the warranty on her mattress, which turned out to have a deep hole. She was visited by a “mattress technologist” who arrived at her door armed with a camera, measuring devices and advanced toward the padded resting place with the air of a surgeon. The minimum size for a hole was two inches and the presenting defect was well beyond the limit! A replacement mattress is on the way, Cheers for the underdog. Boo on the MT. Finally, one morning my email included a message from the St. Charles Park District. The good news was that I had been successfully registered for the forthcoming life saver course.

The bad new was a list of necessary qualifying feats, such as treading water without using your arms, diving for a brick, etc. I replied, stating my age and wheelchair status and added for effect that I would no doubt scare anyone who saw me in a bathing suit. All I got back was a terse message saying “some may have gotten the message in error.”

I guess I was kind of hoping they would try to talk me into it.

Paula Yensen, the executive director of United Way of Central Kane County in St. Charles, was awarded the 2013 Thomas Jefferson Award for Lifetime Achievement by The Democratic Party of McHenry County.

For more than 35 years, Yensen has been an activist for civil rights, women’s rights and social justice. As a Lansing, Mich., resident in the ’70s and ’80s, Yensen founded the Women in Poverty Task Force and served as the Title IX coordinator for the nationally recognized Project on Equal Education Rights. Yensen was also secretary of the Ingham County Women’s Commission, which founded the Lansing domestic violence shelter.

Yensen was a regional coordinator in the campaign to make Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a national holiday, and organized demonstrations in support of the Equal Rights

Amendment.

Yensen helped write and distribute a divorce handbook for women.

She also Paula Yensen taught women on welfare in the Lansing YWCA’s Step Up program.

While at Michigan State University, she led a protest march focused on the problem of sexual assault on college campuses.

According to a press release, Reclaim the Night was the largest campus demonstration since the Vietnam War, and it led the university to make improvements to security.

As a current Illinois resident, Yensen has served two terms as a village trustee in Lake in the Hills and was recently re-elected to serve a second term on the McHenry County Board. She is also a national operational volunteer for Girl Scouts USA.

Ford’s Escape offers family satisfaction An automatic power liftgate is not the biggest reason to buy a minivan or sport utility, but it can be a persuasive feature when shopping for that new family vehicle.

Minivans are more prone to have the feature. Sport utilities are catching on.

A few years ago, a power liftgate was common in the $40,000 (and higher priced) sport ute market. It still is.

Today, the power liftgate has moved into the $30,000 market. It is part of the option package on higher trim levels of sport utility vehicles, such as the Titanium model of the Ford Escape. The Titanium model carries an asking price of $30,000.

With the package that includes a power liftgate, the asking price increases to $32,120. That package also includes 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, silver roof rails with cross bars, xenon headlights, an easily removable cargo cover and rear parking aid sensors (a beeping sound when the vehicle gets within five feet of an object behind).

The Titanium’s liftgate can be opened automatically via a remote key fob or by barely touching its door handle. When there’s a cartload or armful of groceries, it is nice to have a power liftgate.

As a plus, the Titanium model also comes with leather seats (power in front for driver), heated exterior power mirrors, keyless ignition and entry, remote start, Sony sound system with 10 speakers, high definition radio and the Escape’s strongest and most frugal engine, a 2-liter, 240-horsepower, inline EcoBoost four-cylinder. This 2-liter is the most muscular of the four-cylinder offerings for the Escape (S, SE, SEL, Titanium) and can pull a 3,500-pound trailer. S, SE and SEL models are limited to a 1,500 or 2,000 pound towing capacities.

During a test week in the Escape’s Titanium model, average unleaded regular fuel consumption was 26.6 miles per gallon. Most of the mileage was piled up on the highway with two adults aboard (minimal cargo). The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 2013 Titanium model at 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Weather, road conditions and driving habits all play a part in fuel consumption.

During the week, passengers mentioned the comfortable leg room in front and the rear. For the record, leg room is 43.1 inches in front and 36.8 inches in the rear. The suspension system is pretty ba-

Besides power and heated exterior mirrors, other niceties are power windows (driver’s express up and down), tilt and telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, dual zone climate controls, lighted vanity mirrors on visors, compass, clock, map lights front and rear, trip meters, and tachometer.

Other niceties include 12-volt power outlets, cupholders, grab handles, armrests, front and rear carpeted floor mats, intermittent front wipers, rear defroster, wiper and washer and solar tinted glass.

Storage behind the split and fold rear bench measures 34.3 cubic feet. Remove

the cargo cover and fold the seats flat, and that storage area expands to 67.8 cubic feet. Unlike some sport utes, the seats fold absolutely flat with no incline. The storage floor is carpeted, lighted and has tiedowns.

Safety features include airbags in front, on the sides in front, curtains overhead for two rows and a knee airbag for the driver. The Escape’s standard safety fare includes antilock disc brakes, traction and stability controls, lighted entry and a tire pressure monitor. A temporary spare is stored under the load floor.

Ford also puts Sync in its vehicles.

Available and designed for Ford by Microsoft, Sync (introduced in 2008 model year) allows cell phones, MP3 players, USB storage devices and the Titanium’s standard navigation system to be activated by voice command. This is a big plus for cell phone or nav users.

A person can ask “Where am I?” and the answer will appear on a 7-inch color screen.

Escape is a handsome vehicle. The 2013 model has padded seats, upgrade materials and the fit and finish of vehicles found in the luxury market.

Is the Titanium model of the Escape perfect? Hardly. Ford still goes with a befuddling sound system which requires reading instructional materials before playing with touch screens or pushing one of the multiple icons.

Ford offers 24-hour roadside assistance for five years or unlimited mileage in its warranty. The limited warranty is three years or 36,000 miles, and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

For 2014, Ford’s liftgate on the Escape is even more refined. It can be opened in normal fashion (key fob, handle) but also by waving a foot under the rear bumper. The 2014 models are on the market so rebates and incentives are in order on 2013 Escapes. Ask at a dealership about $500 to $1,500 rebates and $1,000 in bonus cash. Restrictions might prevail.

‘Monsters University’ a sweet, fun film “Monsters University” is sweet. It’s life-affirming. It will make you laugh.

But it is not superb. It’s not ground-breaking. It will not make you cry.

No one would care about those last three demerits if “Monsters University” were not a Pixar film.

If this were made by DreamWorks Animation, it would be hailed as a triumph. For proof, take a look at the reaction to last summer’s “Madagascar 3,” which got swell reviews because it wasn’t as bad as critics expected.

Pixar does not have the benefit of low expectations.

Even today, five years on from the miraculous period of “Ratatouille” and “Wall-E,” we expect excellence from Pixar every time out. When Pixar delivers something very good, like “Brave,” or merely good, like “Cars 2,” the world reacts as if M. Night Shyamalan took over the studio.

Compounding the discouraging signs of “Monsters U” is that this is a companion to one of Pixar’s best and most beloved films, 2001’s “Monsters Inc.” At least Pixar’s creative team had the sense to make a prequel instead of a sequel.

“Monsters Inc.” ended with one of the most perfect final shots in cinema history.

You can’t follow that. Who wants to see a continuation where Boo grows up and we learn her real name?

I want the moment when Boo shouts, “Kitty!” and Sulley’s face lights up to last forever. Realizing they shouldn’t go forward with

The monsters party during their freshman year at the titular school, the most prestigious in the monster world. the story, the filmmakers go backward. “Monsters U” is set a decade or two earlier, revealing how tall and furry James P. Sullivan (voiced again by John Goodman) meets short and round Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) during their freshman year at the titular school, the most prestigious in the monster world.

From their first day of class in the university’s Scaring School, Sulley is the Mozart to Mike’s Salieri. Scaring comes so easily to Sulley he doesn’t bother bringing a pencil or notebook to class.

“You don’t need to study scaring,” he says. “You just do it.”

Mike, meanwhile, has been preparing for college since elementary school. He has studied the philosophies of fright so thoroughly he knows the four key aspects of a roar by heart. Yet when Mike tries to put all this devoted learning into action, he gets more laughs than screams.

Sulley’s lackadaisical attitude to his own natural gifts drives Mike crazy.

WESTHOFF REVIEWS Jeffrey Westhoff “Monsters University” borrows ideas from other college movies, including (predictably) “Animal House” and (less predictably) “The Paper Chase.” Eventually, it settles into playing out as a G-rated version of “Revenge of the Nerds.”

After a fight gets them expelled from the Scaring School, Mike and Sulley learn they can be readmitted to the program only if their fraternity wins the annual all-university Scare Games. But the only fraternity that will take them is the lamest, Oozma Kappa. The frat is home to lovable outcasts like middle-aged returning student Don (Joel Murray), the two-headed Terri and Terry (Sean Hayes and Dave Foley) and Art (Charlie Day), a hairy hippie shaped like a big U. The odds are already against the underdog

fraternity, and it doesn’t help that Mike and Sulley don’t trust each other and rarely stop sniping.

The problem at the center of “Monsters U” is the foreknowledge that bedevils most prequels.

Mike and Sulley start out as enemies in this story, but in “Monsters Inc.” they are the best of friends. So before “Monsters U” starts, we know how it must end.

Despite a few surprising turns of plot through the climax, the conclusion is never in doubt. The story generates no tension at all.

It does generate a fair share of comic delights.

The script is filled with jokes and sight gags, and most get a laugh. When Mike meets his roommate, it’s not whom you expect, and the revelation leads to several funny moments.

The hapless nature of Oozma Kappa extends to their victory chant, “We’re OK! We’re OK!” From the first “Toy Story” to the second, the perspective shifted from Buzz to Woody. A similar shift occurs here. In “Monsters Inc.” Mike was the supporting player in Sulley’s story. In “Monsters U” the roles are reversed.

The story focuses on Mike’s quest to find his role in monster society. Sulley tags along and learns a few things in spite of himself.

“Monsters U” doesn’t have the heart of “Monsters Inc.” or any in the first wave of Pixar pictures, but when Mike and Sulley discover their friendship and the strength it gives them, they share a few touching moments.

Reader yearns for tan complexion Dear Doctor K: I like to look tanned, but I’m fair-skinned and can’t spend too much time in the sun. Are sunless tanning lotions and sprays safe?

Dear Reader: Looking tanned is attractive, probably because it is equated with health. If you’re tanned, you’re the “picture of health.” There are basically just three ways your skin can be tanned: (1) exposure to sunlight, (2) exposure to artificial tanning lamps, and (3) staining your skin with a sunless tanning lotion.

But no one should spend too much time soaking up the sun’s rays. Exposing your skin to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) light increases your risk for skin cancer and accelerates skin aging.

Sunless tanning sprays and lotions can make your skin look tanned without exposing it to harmful UV rays. For short-term use at least, sunless tanning products are a good alternative to tanning outdoors or using an indoor tanning bed.

You can buy self-tanning products over the counter and apply them yourself, or you can go to a salon that offers spray-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff on or airbrush tans. The active ingredient in all of these products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color additive often derived from plant sources. It’s FDA-approved for tanning purposes.

The coloring process affects only the surface layers of your skin. So your “tan” lasts only as long as those layers stay on your body – five to seven days. After they slough off, you’ll need a reapplication.

Self-tanning is generally considered safe, although there have been few safety studies.

Allergic reactions are rare, but the long-term effects remain largely unknown. I would say that more research is needed before DHA can be declared safe for long-term use.

Even if you’re sporting a faux glow, it’s important to practice proper sun protection. You still need to use plenty of sunscreen or sunblock when you’re out in the sun. Choose sunscreen with a

sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

I advise against using tanning beds at a salon, spa or gym. These tanners emit the same ultraviolet waves as the sun, the waves that cause skin cancers and skin aging. Worse, the self-tanning industry is largely unregulated.

No one has measured and reported the amount of ultraviolet radiation generated by the machines – and no one will close down the machine if it is generating excessive amounts of radiation.

During a spray-on tanning session, make sure your eyes, lips, ears, nose and mucous membranes are covered. Hold your breath to avoid inhaling the product while it’s being applied.

Some self-tanning products are sold as pills containing a color additive. These pills are not safe when taken in the amount recommended for tanning. Stick with the stuff you spray or rub onto your skin.

A bridge expert often has a careful order in which he must play the tricks to enter a plus score onto his card. In this deal, for example, how must South play in four spades after West leads the club king?

South’s three-spade rebid invited game while promising at least a six-card suit. (With only five, he would have rebid two no-trump or made a help-suit game-try.) North, with a potential source of tricks in his heart suit, raised to game.

South first counts his losers by looking at his hand and taking dummy’s high cards into account. Here, he should see four: two diamonds and two clubs.

Then he counts winners, finding only nine: six spades, two hearts and one club.

Since the loser count is too high and the winner count too low, declarer should realize that he must establish dummy’s heart suit.

This is the safest line: Win the first trick with the club ace, cash the spade ace, take dummy’s top hearts, and ruff a heart high in hand. (South ruffs high for two reasons: He doesn’t want to risk an overruff by West and he needs the two low spades to lead to dummy’s nine and 10 for entries.) Now declarer plays the spade three to dummy’s nine and ruffs another heart high.

Back to dummy with a trump to the 10, South cashes the heart eight, giving him six spades, three hearts and one club.
