Chronicle earns accolades from IPA The Kane County Chronicle took home 10 awards at this year’s Illinois Press Association Excellence in News Contest. The awards ceremony took place June 14 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Springfield.

Two first-place awards went to Chronicle news editor Al Lagattolla, as well as fellow Shaw Media employees Joan Oliver and Chelsea McDougall, in the categories of community service and news reporting-series. The awards were for “Confronting the bully,” a four-day project that published in September.

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey “Impeccably executed, this bullying series puts human faces on this all-too-common scourge,” wrote those who judged the bullying project in the IPA’s news reporting-series category. “Thorough reporting coupled with supporting graphics, sidebars and like make this entry stand out in a competitive category.”

In addition, sports editor Jay Schwab received a first-

place award for best sports column.

Jay also received an honorable mention for best sports feature. In that same category, Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley picked up a second-place award.

Another second-place award – and a third-place award – went to reporter Jonathan Bilyk in the business/economic reporting category.

A third-place award also went to the Chronicle staff for best website. And honorable mentions went to reporter Ashley Rhodebeck in

the government beat reporting category, and photo editor Sandy Bressner in the photo series category.

Last year, the Chronicle received five awards from IPA, including a first-place award for best sports story.

Entries in the IPA news contest are judged in six categories based on publication frequency and total circulation.

Resident has medical marijuana proposal

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – A Batavia resident wants to turn Huntley into one of the state’s first destinations that would support marijuana cultivation – if the illicit drug ultimately becomes legal for medical use in Illinois.

Samuel Franzmann approached Huntley Village Board members during a committee meeting Thursday with the proposition of building a cultivation center that would mass produce marijuana for “sick and dying individuals” to have a better quality of life.

Franzmann told members that he is looking for villages and cities around the Chicago area interested in housing one of the few cultivation centers that would be allowable under a bill awaiting Gov. Pat Quinn’s signature that would legalize medical marijuana.

“I want to make sure that I get my foot in the door and

start talking to people to make them realize that I’m not some crook or drug lord trying to encroach on small town Huntley,” Franzmann said.

Franzmann introduced himself to the board as a business owner with small business experience. He later said he works for Hinsdale Orthopedic doing information technology work.

Local governments are allowed to devise individualized zoning regulations that would govern any potential marijuana cultivation center, under the medical marijuana bill that cleared both houses in Springfield earlier this spring.

The bill allows people with debilitating conditions to receive 2.5 grams of marijuana every two weeks with a doctor’s prescription.

It would create 22 cultivation centers scattered throughout the state that would supply marijuana to 60 dispensaries.

Franzmann’s proposition surprised many Huntley officials who are more accustomed to meeting with housing and restaurant developers privately before publicly revealing economic development plans.

Village Manager Dave Johnson said staff has been reviewing the legislation to figure out the proper ways to structure zoning regulations for medical marijuana grow-

ers. But he was uncertain whether the village would want to work with Franzmann and bring a center to Huntley.

“Certainly, it isn’t anything that we have sat around and thought about attracting to our community,” Johnson said.

A person interested in developing a cultivation center would have to apply for a license with Illinois agriculture department. The department already has started to receive calls from interested cultivators, even though medical marijuana is not yet legal in the state, a department spokesperson said.

On Thursday, village trustees offered no reaction to Franzmann’s unconventional proposal, with the exception of Trustee Niko Kanakaris.

“Did you bring any samples?” Kanakaris said to laughter from the other trustees.

Home sales, prices surge again in May in Kane, Tri-Cities

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com Home sellers found significantly more buyers last month, as the housing market in and around the Tri-Cities continued to show signs of newfound strength in rebounding from the depths of its crash.

In May, home sales in the Tri-Cities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, combined, increased 61.2 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to the most recent round of home-sales data.

The MainStreet Organization of Realtors, a trade group representing Chicago-area real estate agents, reported that 166 detached single-family homes sold in the Tri-Cities in May. A year earlier, the three communities combined to log 103 home sales.

That increase marked an acceleration of the trend that had been ongoing through the spring. In April, for instance, home sales activity in the Tri-Cities increased by 34 percent from 2012 to 2013.

The local rate of increase also eclipsed the increase seen in Kane County overall in May. The Illinois Association of Realtors reported that sales of single-family homes in Kane County increased 40 percent from May 2012 to May 2013, as 620 single-family homes were sold in the county last month.

Overall, 763 residential properties were sold in Kane County in May, an increase of 41.6 percent compared to May 2012.

homes and short sales, remained a sizable portion of the local market last month, as well.

In the Tri-Cities, 32 distressed properties sold in May, accounting for 19.2 percent of sales last month, the MainStreet Organization reported.

A year earlier, 19 distressed properties sold, accounting for 18.4 percent of local sales.

As home sales strengthened, so, too, did home prices.

In Kane County, the IAR reported that the median price of a home increased 4.4 percent in May, from $158,000 a year earlier to $165,000 last month.

And in the Tri-Cities, the average of the median prices for the three communities increased 9.5 percent, to $315,000 from $287,785 the year before.

Swedish fun continues Rain cancels some events, but there’s still much remaining at festival

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The threat of high winds, hail and a fast-moving storm canceled Friday’s Swedish Days Kids’ Parade event and also closed the carnival for a while, officials said.

The six-day festival goes through Sunday with its parade and continuing events, such as the Friends of the Geneva Library semiannual used book sale.

But Friday, some events were washed away by rainy weather.

“In conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and the fire department, and to do the best we could to assure for the safety of visitors, guests and workers, it was decided to postpone the kids’ day parade and to close the carnival until the storms passed,” Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said in an email.

weather so they were able to either take shelter, leave or prepare in some other way, Passarelli said.

As the weather did not immediately clear up, the kids’ day parade was first postponed, then canceled, but the carnival reopened by midafternoon, Chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said.

Other events took place on Friday. At the library’s book sale, Linda Depasquale of Geneva was busy buying mysteries and other books, while her daughter, Michelle, 21, already had two bags full, mostly romances.

Ellen Bassett, president of the friends, said they had about 10,000 books available.

Today’s sale, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be a bag for $5.

Another popular attraction is the food offered by various vendors. Mike DiMaria, helping out at the Knights of Columbus booth, said they were selling lots of roasted turkey legs and ears of corn.

“We’re not going to run out,” DiMaria said. “We have plenty.”

Four mothers – Becky Holzhauer, Kristin Bobeczko, Robin Dibble and Jaimie Holda – with 10 children among them, were disappointed that the kids’ parade was canceled.

The children, nine boys and a girl, created a Viking theme out of duct tape with a ship, horned hats, weapons and shields.

“We’re going to retool the viking theme for next year,” Bobeczko said. “It was a lot of work.”

One of the issues is that the cutoff for participating is 10 years old, and two of the children involved are 10, she said.

Their hope is for the age cutoff to be extended to 11 for next year because it was rained out this year.

“I don’t know if they will change it for next year,” Bobeczko said. “I’m not sure what they’ll do.”

Today’s attractions include a church breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at Geneva Lutheran Church, 301 S. Third St.; the 43rd Annual Granquist Music Competition from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Geneva High School, 416 McKinley Ave.; the All-American Soap Box Derby races from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Second Street between Campbell and Fulton streets; and

Twilight Golf with glow-in-thedark golf balls at Stone Creek Mini-Golf in Wheeler Park.

The Swedish Days Parade will be at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Carnival rides continue through Sunday, as does the zip line, quad power jump, concerts on the lawn and the Swedish Cottage Walk and Viking Ship Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday at Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Drive.

being suspended or revoked, because the enforcement had not occurred when the convictions actually happened, Montalbano said.

When Hartwell was elected in November, he said the by-hand review was ongoing and he did not see any need to inform the public about it.

“I just thought it was part of my job,” Hartwell said. “I did not think I should stand on a soapbox and say how good I am doing. These things had to be reported, and the process of the internal audit was already being done.”

Besides, Hartwell said, from his perspective, the office needs a new computer system anyway, one that could work with the state’s attorney, public defender, court services and judges.

“We need to get moving ahead and get a new system in place and start that whole process,” Hartwell said.

“My job is to keep and maintain the files. My first focus is to do that. It is secondary to me to send out press releases [announcing] ‘By the way everybody, look what a good job I’m doing.’ It’s just not my nature. I am focused on getting the job done.”

Kenyon said he was “totally disappointed.”

“I’m very disappointed that was handled so poorly,” Kenyon said.

Mr. Andrise was born April 1, 1936, in Chicago, to Anthony and Orpha Andrise.

Tony was an avid sportsman enjoying his hunting and fishing excursions with beloved family and friends. He was instrumental in the formation of the St. Charles Hunting and Fishing Club. He worked at Alumax Alum. Company for 33 years as V.P. of operations before taking an early retirement after the loss of his daughter, Alicia. He then started up Alfalco Corp. in Senatobia, Miss., before his final retirement to a beautiful

farm that he loved dearly in Batesville, Miss. Tony also was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, where he served at Fr. Sam Houston Medical Center as a medic instructor. He was devoted to his church Hernando Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon for seven years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bonnie Jeanne Andrise; and his son, Marc.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Alicia Andrise.

ST. CHARLES – Two Kane County Board members are calling for an investigation regarding the failure of the previous Kane County Circuit Clerk Deborah Seyller to send DUI and other driving conviction records to the secretary of state from 2002 to 2008.

Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, and Michael Kenyon, R-South Elgin, hand-delivered a letter Friday to Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon’s office citing the irregularities.

Both are former chairmen of the Judicial Public Safety Committee, to whom Seyller reported when she was circuit clerk.

“Because this matter is a clear concern to public safety … we join together in asking you to immediately investigate these claims to determine what action, if any, is required to remedy this situation,” the letter states in part. “We further ask that you investigate whether any actions herein warrant further criminal investigation.”

Seyller dismissed their concerns as not important.

“C’mon, it’s Kenyon,” Seyller said. “As long as we reacted as soon as we found it, what’s to investi-

gate?”

McMahon, who was not at his office when the letter was delivered, said he would not comment.

“I have not seen it, “McMahon said. “Even if they are asking for it, I would not confirm it one way or another publicly.”

At issue are more than 1,000 convictions for driving under the influence and other serious driving offenses that did not get to the Illinois Secretary of State because of a computer glitch.

The records were being sent electronically, but once the problem came to light last fall, it appears about onefourth of them did not get through, said Terry Montalbano, licensing administrator for the secretary of state.

Seyller’s office started going through 5,600 records by hand last year, a practice continued by current Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell to get all of them recorded properly.

Hartwell said the office was up to date on current cases but still was going through the records from 2003 and 2002.

He had said earlier that 1,393 cases from 2005 through 2008 were found not to have gone through.

With the belated record-keeping, some drivers were being notified years later that their licenses were

Crane flies look like giant mosquitoes Truth about flies

While it’s true that some fly species are vectors of disease, crane flies are harmless. They might look for all the world like enormous, bloodthirsty mosquitoes, but the reality is that adult crane flies rarely feed.

Pam Otto The other night, a large, mosquito-like insect was flying around the kitchen. I waited until it landed, then let it outside.

Not five minutes later, I spotted another. Out it went, too.

Then Tuesday, at work, someone reported a “giant mosquito” in the hallway. I went to investigate (OK, investigate and take pictures), then caught and set that insect free as well.

I’ll admit it. I have a thing for crane flies.

Unlike fireflies, butterflies and dragonflies (and caddisflies, mayflies, stoneflies, whiteflies, sawflies …) crane flies are true flies, members of the insect order Diptera.

Di- means two and –ptera means wings; having two wings instead of four is the trait that distinguishes these insects from virtually all others.

Crane flies make up the largest family within the order and, as a bonus to us fly-watchers, are fairly large.

Many individuals sport body lengths of around an inch, with legs that measure nearly twice that long.

Without a doubt, crane flies give you a chance to see, up close and personal, just what it is that makes a fly a fly.

Where the second set of wings normally would sprout, flies instead sport a pair of small, knobbed structures called halteres.

They stick out at right angles to the fly’s body and look something like the balancing poles used by tightrope walkers like the Flying Wallendas.

In fact, halteres are all about balancing. As a fly flies, the halteres vibrate rapidly and out of phase with the wings and help keep the insect flying level.

The sensory information provided by the halteres is much like that provided by the instrument panel on an airplane.

Mess with a fly’s halteres,

aquatic crane fly larvae also serve as indicators of water quality.

They can’t tolerate a lot of pollution, so their presence in a stream is a sign that the water is at least moderately clean.

The next time you spot a fly on the wall, take some time to check it out. Does it look like a giant mosquito?

You may find you have a thing for crane flies, too.

On crane flies, it’s easy to see the halteres, or modified wing structures. Present in most true fly species, halteres function like gyroscopes and help the insect maintain its equilibrium during flight. and you’ll ground it for life.

“Gladly!” you’re probably thinking, as you picture a house fly tainting your picnic foods – or, worse, its larvae – maggots – making themselves at home in something meaty and dead.

While it’s true that some fly species are vectors of disease, crane flies are harmless.

They might look for all the world like enormous, bloodthirsty mosquitoes, but the reality is that adult crane flies rarely feed.

Their primary goal at this stage of life is to find a mate and pass along some genes, perhaps procuring a drink of water along the way.

Crane fly larvae, on the other hand, have a different objective.

They aim to eat as much as possible during the 10 months or so they spend as juveniles.

Plump and soft, usually light gray in color, the legless crane fly larvae can grow to almost three inches as they munch away on their way to pupation.

Crane fly larvae can be found in a variety of habitats, ranging from streams and

ponds to moist woodland floors.

Most species are scavengers that eat decaying plant

matter, and play important roles as decomposers in their respective ecosystems.

To adjust for the fewer calls, the city’s fire department shut down a fire company and terminated 18 paid-oncall firefighters, Schelstreet said. He noted the city now operates three companies a day instead of four.

About 60 percent of the calls in 2012 were for rescue and emergency medical services, according to the report.

Of the 2,544 rescue incidents, the report showed, 2,247 were EMS calls, excluding vehicle accidents; 195 were for vehicle accidents; 62 were for medic assistance; 26 were for extri-

cation incidents; 13 were for pedestrian versus vehicle accidents; and one was for water rescue.

Nearly 4 percent of the fire department’s calls were for fires. Of the 157 fires, the report showed, 60 were structure or building fires; 33 were grass or brush fires; 29 were

appliance, cooking or chimney fires; 18 were dumpster or rubbish fires; 10 were vehicle fires; and seven were fires of other types.

The total fire loss was $602,745 – more than a 40 percent decrease from 2011, according to the report.

“We didn’t have many dramatic incidents,” Schelstreet said. “Our responses were consistent with our expectations and our planning. We’re fortunate to have a very effective fire prevention program here that keeps our fire losses to a minimum.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Fire Department handled 4,217 incidents last year, the first full year it didn’t respond to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, according to the department’s 2012 annual report.

When the fire district ended its contract with the city in May 2011, the city expected to lose an average of three calls a day, Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

“That’s consistent with the amount of calls that we are running,” he said.

OPINIONS Time marches on It was with great honor and humility that my daughter Kacie and I were able to again serve on Memorial Day in St. Charles, having played taps at six different venues at the request of American Legion Post 342 and VFW Post 5036.

During the last several years, I – along with my daughters Mary or Kacie – have enjoyed playing taps and honoring our veterans, both past and present.

It was sadly noted on Memorial Day by Mr. John DePauw and representatives of the VFW that the building erected after World War II would be sold June 14.

Because of the declining membership and maintenance issues with the VFW, representatives of the VFW agreed to sell the building and property to the city.

Time indeed marches on, but a city and its citizenry should never forget its heritage and the sacrifices of earlier generations.

I was fortunate enough to have been born and raised in St. Charles and the grandson and son of past Post 342 Legion Cmdrs.

Earlier I wrote of the sacrifice and service of St. Charles citizens in a book entitled “While They Were Young, A History of St. Charles and Her Service Personnel, 1940-1945,” and in researching and writing that book, I gained a great appreciation of all that the prior generation did for the present generation.

Being around the friends of my grandfather and dad taught me that the men and women who served in World War I and World War II were true patriots who never complained, worked hard and loved their coun-

After the war, many contributed to the well being of their community through the American Legion and VFW. Memorial Day is more than just a day off – it is the honoring of those who have paid a high price, many with their lives or returning with the injuries of war; many having served their country for love of neighbor and of God following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In reviewing earlier photos of the VFW, one can sense the excitement and spirit of community as funds were raised for a worthy cause – building a home where returning veterans could find the welcome and warmth of a fellow serviceman or woman after April 1945.

The building holds so many irreplaceable memories, now preserved only in the few surviving members of that era and photos.

My prayer and hope is that the veterans and wounded warriors of our present wars will find a home either with the Legion or VFW. May God continue to bless both organizations, our community and country.

Backlog in circuit clerk’s office big concern Issues in the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office have drawn scrutiny and are prompting questions.

The Kane County Chronicle reported earlier this week the records for more than a thousand people charged with DUI and other serious traffic offenses had not successfully made it to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office as required.

Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell has said the issues stem from problems with the office’s computer system, Jano, which reportedly was not updated or maintained by the Jano company for six or seven years. Deborah Seyller, Hartwell’s predecessor, said that she had an outside company perform maintenance. As such, at least 5,600 cases from 2002 to 2008 had to be counted by hand to check whether they had made it to the secretary of state, officials said. Since then, the circuit clerk has been working to catch up on the records that never made it over.

“These cases kind of went into that dark hole where two computers were not talking to each other,” Hartwell said. “We did not realize the secretary of state was not getting the information. It came to my attention when I came to the office Dec. 3. … It was not really properly followed up until it became ridiculously critical by all parties involved.”

information did not initially get to the secretary of state.

The situation reinforces the county’s well-documented need to provide a fix to its woeful court computer system. It also recalls a period of sharp contention in the county – in particular, when Seyller sued former Kane County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay and the County Board, alleging, among other things, that the County Board purposely underfunded her office.

The issue prompts questions that may take time to answer. Is the backlog costing taxpayers more money than they would have paid if this situation never had occurred? What party or parties are ultimately responsible for the backlog? How long is it going to take to get the situation resolved? And what exactly does this mean for the people affected?

A charge of DUI and a subsequent revoked license don’t often elicit a lot of sympathy. But dealing with the ramifications resulting from the actions by the circuit clerk’s office years after they were supposed to have been resolved doesn’t seem fair either.

County officials are identifying funds for a new court computer system, and it is a fix that can’t come fast enough.

We support Hartwell and the secretary of state in working through the backlog as quickly as possible. And we hope tough questions are answered.

Dryden did nothing wrong

Dryden’s negative attitude on display Batavia High School teacher John Dryden received a written warning and a loss of one day’s pay for improper conduct involving his actions in the classroom.

Reading comments made by Dryden, that he knows more about the Constitution than the school board and the retiring superintendent, shows complete disrespect for his employer.

If he were in the private sector, he would have been fired.

It’s not what people wanted I was so looking forward to visiting my hometown of Batavia this year.

So much has changed in the name of beautification.

We need people in local government who grew up in Batavia and have happy memories and want to restore what we had, not make radical changes.

Changes are good only if at the hands of competent leaders.

What does the arch stand for? It is a crude, ugly eyesore, not worth thousands of dollars.

And it’s not what the people wanted.

Do something about the guns I want to say that every morning when I wake up, the first thing I hear is all the killing and the shooting that went on in Chicago during the night.

Why are we allowing this to happen?

We are supposed to be a civilized country.

When that many people get killed every night, guns should be taken away from everybody in the city.

Nobody should have them in the city.

They might be for wars, but they are not for city dwelling.

Why don’t they do something about it?

It’s unbelievable. Why are we trying to please the National Rifle Association?

Why are we giving them the advantage of selling guns all the time?

Why can’t we do something about that? Who are they?

I’m calling regarding the situation with the Batavia teacher John Dryden, and the school board censuring him.

That is the most ridiculous thing I ever have heard of.

I think any social studies teacher who did not inform students that they had the right to not incriminate themselves should have been censured.

This teacher did nothing but inform the students of their rights. It’s ridiculous for the school board to have punished him for that.

I think when the polls open next time, every one of those school board members should be voted out.

Your rights don’t end when you walk in through the schoolhouse door.

STAYING OPTIMISTIC North grad Jimenez hopes to make return to organized ball

P

eople inevitably ask Danny Jimenez which major league club his new baseball team is affiliated with.

He tells them the truth: the Schaumburg Boomers are a member of the independent Frontier League. The only place Jimenez gets called up to is the pitcher’s mound.

The change in status could jar Jimenez, a power-throwing left-hander who spent the past four seasons in the Cleveland Indians system after breaking out at St. Charles North.

Instead, it keeps him focused.

It’s possible to feel the cut of a release at this level, too.

“It’s been tough, you know.

Mentally, it’s definitely tough.

You kind of lose a little bit of confidence,” Jimenez said.

“But you’ve got to gain it back quickly, because coming to play here, you’ve got to bring your stuff. It’s just like the minors. They can bring in other guys.”

Cleveland released Jimenez, a 23rd round selection in 2009, near the end of spring training after what statistically was his roughest minor league season.

Jimenez went 2-4 with a 5.28 ERA in nine games and seven starts for Class A Lake County during the home stretch of the Midwest League schedule. He missed much of the season after breaking a bone in his left pinkie when a line drive smacked off his hand in the first intrasquad game of spring training 2012.

Many of his Schaumburg teammates also are recently-released former prospects – namely right-hander Mike Giovenco, a Fenwick alumnus and Kane County Cougar from 2011-12 – leaving Jimenez optimistic about a return to organized ball.

“I think about it every day, trying to get back,” he said.

“It’s hard not to. It would be one thing if I wasn’t pitching good or something like that,

Boomers manager Jamie Bennett and pitching coach T.J. Nall, both former minor league pitchers, don’t disagree about Jimenez’s potential.

That’s largely because of his velocity.

Relying on natural strength from a 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame, Jimenez hovers around 89 to 93 mph with his fastball. Through seven starts with the Boomers, he has struck out 37 batters in 41 innings, giving Nall a solid base with which to work.

The next step is harnessing control, both physical and mental. While Jimenez’s 16 walks and five wild pitches have contributed to a 1-3 record and 4.17 ERA, the sequences and mindsets that lead to those numbers are most important.

It accomplishes nothing to dwell on mechanics after yanking a pitch three feet

outside. That only can mean havoc for the next pitches.

“You start figuring that stuff out around 4, 5, 600 innings,” Nall said. “How to manage all the other stuff around you and how to really commit to that one pitch at the end.”

The Frontier League caps roster age limits at 27 apart from one veteran slot a team.

Jimenez turns 24 in late September, and knows he’s right at the crossroads of when careers either take off or stall.

All he needs to do is look around. Fellow North product Jeff Holm, 24, was a Midwest League All-Star outfielder for West Michigan of the Detroit Tigers organization last week.

Kenny Smalley, who pitched for Batavia and North before becoming the first native “Kane County” Cougar, was out of the Oakland A’s system after the 2010 season, when he was 23.

“Danny’s name’s already out there. Guys know who he

is and those kinds of things,” Bennett said. “He’s got a good arm, enough velocity where he’s getting noticed. He’s physically put together pretty well, so he’s not one of those guys who’s throwing under the radar.”

As Jimenez sees it, he faded away from Cleveland’s thoughts because he was rebuilding his stamina in the Midwest League last season instead of spring training.

Asked where he sees himself in a year, he answered with organized baseball. As long as he does his part and keeps moving forward.

“You never stop learning in baseball,” Jimenez said.

“There’s always things you can work on and you tend to find that out when you fail.

That’s a nice reminder of Geneva and Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, but Johnson wasn’t liable to forget about Kane County anyway.

“It was a blast playing there and I want to thank my teammates and the fans there,” Johnson said. “I hope the best for everyone on that team in the second half, and hopefully some of those guys will join me.”

Another go-round: Mike Giovenco, a right-handed reliever for the Cougars during the club’s affiliation with the Kansas City Royals from 201112, signed with the independent Schaumburg Boomers in the offseason.

An Elmhurst native who pitched at Fenwick and North Park University, the 6-foot6, 235-pound Giovenco has shined in spots as a starter for

the Boomers. The team would like him to cut down on walks, though, as he had 24 in 36⅔ innings through Thursday.

“He’s not really wandering, but just kind of not committing to certain pitches and stuff like that,” Boomers pitching coach T.J. Nall said. “Trying to kind of trick guys instead of going after them.”

Camping out: Righty Shawn Camp rejoined the Cubs bullpen this week after throwing three innings of two-hit, four-strikeout relief over two rehab appearances with the Cougars on June 11 and 14.

“That’s the good thing about being right down the road,”

Mark Johnson said. “You can come in here and get your work in and go back and go back home.”

Camp, who’d been out with a strained right big toe, was the first big leaguer to rehab in Geneva under the two-year Cubs-Cougars player-development contract signed in September 2012.

Outfielder David DeJesus, who sprained his right shoulder this past weekend, might be the next candidate in July.

It would be a familiar trip for DeJesus, who works out with Batavia-based ProForce Sports Performance Training in the offseason.

DAVENPORT, Iowa – After falling behind early, the Kane County Cougars fought back to tie the game but couldn’t keep it even as the Quad Cities River Bandits strung together 15 hits in a 4-2 win Friday at Modern Woodmen Park.

Tayler Scott surrendered 11 hits in just five innings but was able to limit the River Bandits (40-31, 2-0) to just two runs.

The Cougars (30-38, 2-0) and River Bandits play in game three of their four-game set today at 7 p.m today. Left-hander Michael Heesch (3-5) starts for the Cougars against Colton Cain.

The Cougars return home at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against the Beloit Snappers.

The Cubs expect Pierce Johnson to continue climbing their organizational ladder, as he did with this week’s promotion from the Cougars to Advanced A Daytona.

A first-round sandwich pick last June, Johnson envisions the same path for himself, though that doesn’t prevent him from the occasional brush with goosebumps.

So it went Wednesday, when Cougars manager Mark Johnson and pitching coach Ron Villone summoned the right-hander to tell him of the move after an off-day workout.

“I felt pretty poised,” Pierce Johnson said in a phone interview Friday. “I definitely felt like I had worked pretty hard, but it’s definitely a butterfly effect, as well.”

Johnson arrived in Daytona on Thursday, threw a bullpen session Friday and is scheduled to make his Florida State League debut against Lakeland on Monday.

In a team-high 13 starts with the Cougars during the first half of the Midwest League season, the former Missouri State standout went 5-5 with a 3.10 ERA. Johnson compiled 74 strikeouts in 69⅔ innings, relying on a low 90s fastball he has spotted with precision.

“The reason I was drafted is because I throw that pretty well,” Johnson said. “That’s my best pitch, and locating it is the key at every level.”

Also armed with a low-80s slider, Johnson has thrown his changeup at the same speed.

In Daytona, he’ll reunite with a handful of teammates who broke spring training with the Cougars, including

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Some of the area’s best junior golfers battled the elements as well as the Pheasant Run Resort course Friday.

For the most part, the elements came out on top.

Rain and lightning cut short the Illinois Junior Golf Association regional tournament, but not before Grant Manno of Arlington Heights shot a 1-over-par 73 to win the boys’ senior competition, the only division that finished 18 holes before a strong thunderstorm halted play.

“I played really well considering it was windy out,” Manno said. “My putter still let me down on the greens – they’re tricky to read.”

Manno, who graduated from Hersey this spring and will play golf at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, this fall, said he had played the course only one other time.

“It was in really nice condition,” he said. “Besides

the wind, it was in very good shape.”

The wind gave plenty of other golfers problems, too, including Brody Kuhar of Elburn, an incoming Kaneland senior whose thirdplace finish was the best among local entrants. Kuhar fired a 78, one stroke behind Trevor Sisson of Sterling.

“I started out great,” Kuhar said.

Kuhar started his round on the 10th tee, so his back nine was actually the first nine holes of the course.

He ran into difficulty with some of the par-3 holes on his back nine.

“They’re just tough,” Kuhar said. “They’re long and the wind was in my face on most of them.”

and bogeyed the other two par-3 holes on the front nine of the course.

The highlights of the round for Kuhar were birdies on the par-4 10th hole and the par-5 15th.

Kuhar is off to a fast start this summer, having won an IJGA regional tournament at Phillips Park in Aurora and placing second in another regional at Fox Bend in Oswego.

Kuhar said he is focusing on the mental part of the game, “being able to stay up when something bad happens.

“Usually, when I have a bad hole,” he said, “I can come back with something [good]. … Last year, I would blow up following a bad hole.”

Nathan Desens of Geneva tied for fourth at Pheasant Run, one shot behind Kuhar.

Seven golfers finished at 80 to tie for sixth place, including Kyle Jacobs of St. Charles, Matt Yonkovich of Sugar Grove and Alex Schreiber of Geneva.

Yeah, definitely. It was pretty bizarre to see them in the finals. We thought that Michigan State was actually going to knock them out.

That’s what our coaches were saying and what we were thinking … We had seen CU twice and beat them both times during the regular season. Going into that third game, we knew it was going to be tough to get them that third time, but we had confidence. … That rivalry is such a strong rivalry that it was definitely fun seeing them in the finals.

What has everyone said to the women’s team after it won a national title, too?

It’s interesting. We don’t see them all that often. But going into it, I talked to one of their star players and she was talking about how they had lost a lot of players from the year before but everyone had stepped up. … It worked out pretty good for both

Do you get many questions or looks about the team being the top level of club as opposed to NCAA Division I? It’s always so hard because we have that stigma, and I have a bunch of friends that are at Division I, II and III schools playing lacrosse. I definitely would like to play one of their teams just to see how we match up. … Our head coach makes it real serious in practice every day and sends us emails each day to see what we should be focusing on. The lacrosse team is definitely his job and keeping us focused, and we keep it real serious, too.

Prep lacrosse in St. Charles was a co-op when you played.

What have you observed about the East-North split?

I know it’s been a struggle, but it’s really cool to see it spread out and more coaches devote time and more kids come in. But I’m glad I got to play with the combined team. … It was really neat to get that across the river [bond] with St. Charles East.

You had one assist this season, in a game against Utah.

How did the play develop?

I got a takeaway on the other end of the field, scooped it up and pushed the fast break going the other way. I saw one of the attackmen, Chris Roach, kind of back-cutting, sprinting across the crease, so I saw him flashing and got him the ball. You kind of see that connection and it’s a sneaky play.

What’s the significance of your jersey number, 58?

I was assigned that number at Haines Middle School for football and somehow just picked that number

You talked about working for New Wave. What’s the approach when you’re trying to expand leagues to other parts of the state?

New Wave, they have a certain way of running things. It’s a lot of lacrosse.

When I went down to central Illinois recently, to Bloomington-Normal, the first thing I had to tell them is the players are on one side of the field and the parents are on the other. … We want it to be professional and want it to look that way, too. … It’s definitely catching on.

What are you studying at CSU? Double major in business management and then environmental communications … It’s good. I was taking 18 credit hours last semester which is kind of hard with the season, but it’s interesting. I think this can help me land a job where I’m helping people and working with people but also bringing that business aspect into it.

Since returning from Fort Collins, Colo., he is enjoying summer in the Fox Valley, working for Naperville-based New Wave Lacrosse while also playing in a Tuesday night men’s lacrosse league at Moore Park in Geneva. To most of us on the outside, the sequence happens so fast and seems so random.

What a lucky bounce! What a fortunate tip!

But in hockey, as in life, you usually have to work for your luck.

The Blackhawks did so Friday, rehearsing deflections again and again during an hour-long practice at the United Center. In pairs of two, a forward would skate to the front of the net while a defenseman stopped at the blue line and fired a line-drive shot for the forward to deflect.

Duncan Keith to Andrew Shaw. Brent Seabrook to Jonathan Toews. Niklas Hjalmarsson to Patrick Sharp. Johnny Oduya to Bryan Bickell.

Seabrook again – this time to Michal Handzus. And on and on.

The Hawks hope all of that hard work pays off today when they host the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. One perfectly timed deflection could be the key to unlocking the hard-fought series, which is tied at two games apiece with three of the four games going to overtime.

For those curious to learn, the Hawks are happy to shed light on the art of the deflection.

Step 1: The shot Almost always, a deflection starts with a shot from the blue line. Typically, a defenseman is the one to take that shot. For the shooter, a fine line exists between being patient and missing an opportunity.

Forward Brandon Saad: Our defensemen do a great job of getting the puck through. They take that extra second, see where you’re at, and then they get the puck through. That’s the biggest part [of getting a deflection] is getting the puck to the net.

[if] there’s nobody in front of the net, shooting a wrist shot from the blue line is pretty much useless in this league against the goalies we have right now.

Step 2: The deflection

Step 3: The follow through

The first step for deflecting a puck is to establish position in front of the crease. That’s not an easy job for Hawks forwards as opposing defenders slash, shove and crosscheck anyone loitering near the net.

Knowing where to stand and when to extend one’s stick is important, as is the placement of the shot.

Forward Bryan Bickell: Nothing around the body. Anything around the stick is good.

It’s harder to tip when you’re in front. The sides are better.

If a deflection results in a goal, players go back and work on it during the next practice.

If a deflection does not result in a goal, players go back and work on it during the next practice.

Saad: Deflections are a huge part of the game – especially with how good the goaltenders are at this stage of the game.

You see big goals by Johnny [Toews] and in OT [by Shaw in Game 1]. They’re huge, and you’ve got to get better at them.

Bickell: If it’s there, we’re going to use it. We need to get in front of [Tuukka Rask] because he sees the puck well and he’s going to save a lot of them. I think that’s the way we can get to him.

Handzus: It’s a mix of everything. You’ve got to be fast, you’ve got to have good timing, everything. That’s why we try to practice because it’s not one thing. They try to tie up your stick, too, so you’ve got to be able to do a lot of things. Whenever you protect your stick with your body, it’s way easier for you to get it.

I think it’s just being confident and moving and just letting your instincts take over rather than maybe listening to somebody trying to tell you what to do. Just go out there and play.

Hand-eye coordination, it’s got to be good. It’s got to be there. Not everyone has it. It’s kind of a thing you work on.

You get better over the year. I think personally I can get better. I just need to keep pushing myself. I think Jonathan Toews is one of the best guys at doing it.

Wasco lands $2,500 grant KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE Liberty Mutual Insurance this week announced that Wasco Baseball is among 15 youth sports organizations that have received a $2,500 Responsible Sports Community Grant, which the organization will use for field improvements and to enhance the overall playing experience for participating youth athletes.

“We greatly appreciate the support that we received from our community and members in securing this reward on

behalf of Wasco Baseball and our community,” Scott Buziecki of Wasco Baseball said in a statement. “Contributions like this one from Liberty Mutual Insurance make such a big difference in helping our program succeed. Relishing small moments before the big ‘firsts’ begin The dog had his legs crossed.

His boy had taken to sleeping in.

“Please walk Jake,” I implored, as the boy, who’d dutifully walked him every morning before school but was still in his pj’s, instead watched a video.

I hated to harangue him, but the dog had to pee. It was the third morning of summer break and already I’d grown weary of sounding like a shrew.

I’m not wild about worrying, either.

A couple of days later my phone rang. An hour late.

“Hi, Mom,” he said.

“Hi, Hon. I thought you were gonna text me when you got there?”

“I forgot.”

“Don’t forget, next time, or I’ll come looking for you. And wow, that could get embarrassing,” I promised, as I issued my best evilMom laugh.

He laughed and made promises, too, that it would never happen again. Smart kid. Good plan.

He had other plans, too. Big plans. And he needed cash to execute those plans, which meant he needed a job.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose trees springing up in my gutters, a bush eating my front door and weeds cropping up on the patio.

So, we agreed that he would do yard work to earn some money.

But other stuff cropped up, too, and the weeds continued to grow.

It was time for a talk. Reflecting on what a drag it was for us both to nag and be nagged is not my favorite way to begin a summer’s day – or a summer.

I’m a no-drama mama. It makes me feel icky. I had a hunch Noah didn’t enjoy it, either, and a peaceful summer is what I’m after, so I suggested we conjure a plan. We compromised that he’d walk Jake by 10, as long as he at least let him out first thing in the morning, and he decided which mornings he’d also tackle the yard work. It’s on the calendar.

So far, so good. I think he’s relieved. I know I am. Expectations were clarified, brainstorming happened and compromises were

struck.

Now things get done and then the balance of the day is his to spend as he likes. After all, that’s what childhood summer days are for. Noah turns 15 next month.

Those days are numbered. But I got a glimpse of one the other day.

Wednesday afternoon we stumbled upon LeRoy Oakes Nature Preserve in St. Charles, where my kids had never been before.

This sweet spot is right out of a storybook. We admired the sturdy hardwoods and waded in Fersun creek. Holly followed a frog and Noah threw a few stones.

“I’m not leaving ’til I hit that rock,” Noah said, after we’d been there a while. He always did love a challenge.

He was barely knee-high when he hurled his first stone into his first creek. But now he’s big enough to man the mower. And in no time at all, he’ll be learning to drive. Which makes this summer – the last one before all of the other big “firsts,” which will eventually spirit my babies away from me – my absolute favorite.

Learning to Grow: Tri color beech a Tri-City star

By CATHERINE HARRINGTON editorial@kcchronicle.com We Midwesterners love our springs! No matter how long or harsh the winter, the memories of ice and snow exit our minds as the sights and senses of spring fill us with rapture!

This year, the very first flowers of spring caught my at-

tention and the enjoyment has not stopped! Spring flowers, flowering shrubs, and blooming trees have put on quite a show! Driving through the Tri-Cities has provided, and continues to provide, a visual feast for one’s eyes.

I don’t have to leave home to enjoy one magnificent sight. My favorite tree, a tri

color beech (Fagus sylvatica) dominates my back yard. I planted this tree many years ago upon the advice of a good friend and nurseryman, Mr. Peter Grathoff.

The late Peter Grathoff knew of trees that were, at that time, rather unknown and certainly seldom used in this area. I am thankful to this day

for following Peter’s advice.

This striking tree is best used as a specimen tree; the leaves are variegated and come in shades of green, pink and cream. The tri color beech does well in our zone and grows slowly. As the tree matures, it forms a broad, rounded pyramid. This is one tree that is best planted in the spring.

Mr. Grathoff advised me to plant my young tree in a protected environment out of direct sunlight. The female tree can produce flowers; however the flowers are not showy. With this specimen, the leaves are the stars of the show!

Barnes, who also starred in such movies as “License to Kill,” “The Devil’s Rejects” and the cult classic “Mallrats,” will appear this weekend at Mighty Con at Pheasant Run Resort’s Megacenter, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Barnes about her career.

Eric Schelkopf: You’ve made a lot of different career choices. Of all the projects you’ve been involved in, do you have any favorites?

Priscilla Barnes: Probably my favorite would be my next role.

ES: So, you never look back, you’re always looking forward?

PB: I think that’s the way to live your life.

ES: One of the roles that you are probably best known for is your role on “Three’s Company.” Did you feel a lot of pressure replacing Suzanne Somers?

PB: I’m sure I did, yeah, at that time.

I think I was 22. I think you feel a lot of pressure at 22 to do anything.

There was a lot of attention. It was my third series, but I hadn’t done anything that had the worldwide fame that “Three’s Company” had.

I worked a lot before that, so I wasn’t really used to instant fame. I was just used to working.

ES: Did you like being part of that show?

PB: Yeah, I mean Joyce DeWitt is still one of my best friends. Don Knotts was certainly one of my dear friends before he passed. I made a lot

ES: “The Devil’s Rejects” is also one of your well-known roles. Why did you want to be part of that project?

PB: I auditioned for the role I got

ES: It seems like you’ve done a lot of different roles. What draws you to a role in the first place?

PB: An artist is an expression of something that you’re attracted to, or that you can express yourself through. It doesn’t matter what medium it is. It can be acting, it can be painting or mixed media. There

cast in, and I also auditioned for another role in that movie, that the porn star Ginger Lynn ended up playing. She’s a real porn star, so I’m certainly not surprised that she got it.

At that time, I really wasn’t that familiar with Rob Zombie as a musician or his first movie, “House of 1000 Corpses.” There was a lot of buzz about him, and after working with him, he became one of my favorite directors.

He loves artists and actors. He lets them go and just create. He’s one of the great people to work for.

He understands what actors go through, so he knows how to communicate with them. He lets them know what he wants, and then gets out of their way, and lets them do what they do.

ES: And then of course, there’s “Mallrats,” directed by Kevin Smith. What intrigued you about that project?

PB: I really was a fan of “Clerks.”

I was going for something in “Mallrats” that I didn’t accomplish. I was trying to make it less sexual, but it still became a cult classic.

A lot of talent was in there. You have Ben Affleck and then Jason Lee, that was his first movie; he was a skateboard star.

I really am a fan of Kevin Smith. I think he’s an extremely intelligent, interesting human being.

ES: Do you have any advice for someone trying to break into the acting business?

PB: Gosh no, I wouldn’t be so presumptuous to give any advice.

Foot care products range from good to worthless Dear Doctor K: I see lots of products designed to treat foot problems – and I have lots of foot problems. Are the foot care products you can buy in the drugstore worth the money?

Dear Reader: For some body parts, the drugstore has little to offer. But you’re right. There are many foot products. To find out if they’re really helpful, I checked with my colleague, Dr. James P. Ioli, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. Here are our thoughts on some common foot care products.

• An arch bandage might make your arch feel better and more supported, but it won’t change the structure of your arch or fix serious problems. People with diabetes or poor circulation should avoid these because they could reduce blood flow through the foot. If you don’t have circulation problems, it might be worth a try.

Some of my patients really find that arch bandages help their feet feel better.

• Callus and corn cushions are simple and effective. The doughnut shape keeps pressure off calluses and corns. Change them often; otherwise the skin underneath will start to break down.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Stay away from callus and corn removers. The active ingredient, salicylic acid, can harm the healthy skin around the corn or callus.

• Detoxifying foot pads claim to absorb impurities from the body and aid “natural cleansing.”

In a word – bunk! The best way to clean your feet is by washing them with soap and water.

• Foot files are OK, but use with care. Don’t scrape and scrape until you start to bleed. An old-fashioned pumice stone is a more gentle option for removing dead skin.

• Foot powders are better than many sprays and can help with sweaty and smelly feet. Some brands contain menthol, which creates a pleasant sensation and smell. Others have an antifungal medication.

• Moleskin products are cotton flannel with an adhesive backing, not actual moleskin. They are good for reducing friction points in shoes caused by bunions, cal-

luses or corns. If you find yourself using a lot of moleskin, consider attacking the root problem: Switch to more flexible, better-fitting shoes.

• Nonprescription orthotics are worth a try before considering the prescription ones, which cost a lot and usually aren’t covered by insurance. The flat, foam and gel orthotics cushion the foot nicely. If you overpronate (if your foot rolls inward) or have arch problems, buy a pair with arch support.

Some doctors don’t take foot problems seriously. After all, they’re not fatal. I was probably like them until I developed some arthritis in my feet. It was then I realized how much we walk in the course of a day, and how irritating it is to experience pain whenever you walk.

So, it’s good that simple over-the-counter solutions can help out with foot pain. Some are definitely worth trying; others are definitely not worth the money.

Dr. Wallace: My cousin was to be married in June, and I was supposed to be one of the bridesmaids. I was told what kind and color of dress to wear. I understand that I had to pay for the dress and didn’t have a problem with that, even though my parents are not rich, and I don’t have any money because I’m in the 11th grade. My parents, with a little help from my grandparents, paid for the dress that cost $175.

Last week my cousin’s mother (my mom’s sister) called to say that the wedding has been canceled. It turns out that my cousin has decided she really doesn’t love her fiance after all.

Now I’m stuck with a $175 dress I don’t want and probably will never wear.

My mother called her sister yesterday and asked if someone in her family would reimburse our family for the dress because it wasn’t our fault that the wedding was canceled. My aunt then got huffy and said we knew we were responsible for the cost of the dress because we were told that fact when I agreed to be in the wedding.

I think my cousin should reimburse us for at least $100 to help us pay for something that I will never use. After all, she was the one who canceled out. For the $100, we will gladly give her a brand new pink and cream bridesmaid dress that has never been worn and that she obviously liked because she chose it. She just might even wear it herself. Do you agree? – Molly, Atlanta, Ga. Dear Molly: The bottom line is this isn’t worth a family feud. I’m sure your cousin didn’t cancel the wedding lightly or thoughtlessly; in all likelihood, she’s in

Maybe the issue of reimbursement can be discussed more calmly sometime down the road.

My advice, however, is just to let it go and absorb the $175. If you push the issue, you could open a rift that never heals.

Perhaps you and the other bridesmaids could seek advice from the bridal shop where the dress was purchased.

Dr. Wallace: I like to prepare my own meals because I enjoy eating healthy foods and my parents and grandmother do not. Most of my meals are cooked in a microwave oven. My grandmother keeps telling me that foods cooked in a microwave are very unhealthy and could cause all kinds of health problems. I talked with my science teacher, and he said that foods cooked in a microwave are safe to eat. Who is right? I hope it’s my teacher. – Janie, Dallas, Tex. Dear Janie: In conventional cooking, heat is applied from the outside and gradually penetrates food, but microwaves cook the interior of foods directly by causing water molecules to vibrate, thus causing heat.

According to the University of California Wellness Letter, microwaving is like steaming – an excellent way to preserve nutrients and is one of the better cooking methods.

Not a superstitious man, he.

And bridge is not a game for the superstitious, with its 13-card hands and 13-trick deals.

To get from one hand to the other, you often have to be careful with your cards. How does that apply in this deal? South is in four spades, and West leads the club queen.

If you open two no-trump with only 20 or 21 points, you should definitely upgrade that South hand and open two clubs. If you require a good 20, 21 or 22 for two no-trump, it is a closer call, but with all four aces, two 10s and those combining honors, the hand is worth nearer 23 points than 21.

On the second round, North employs Stayman to uncover the 4-4 spade fit.

South should see four potential losers: two hearts, one diamond and one club. He has only nine guaranteed tricks: four spades, one heart, three diamonds and one club. Declarer should conclude that the diamond finesse must be winning.

However, that finesse might have to be taken three times, which would require three dummy entries. Put those trumps to work!

Declarer should win with his club ace, cash the spade ace and carefully overtake the spade eight with dummy’s nine. Then he tries the diamond finesse. When it wins, South plays the spade 10 to dummy’s jack and repeats the diamond finesse. Finally, he leads the spade queen to dummy’s king, takes a third diamond finesse, and claims 10 tricks: four spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club.

Watch your entries like a cat, black or otherwise.
