OUT AND ABOUT Jenny McCarthy event at Herrington GENEVA – TV star, model, actress and Geneva resident Jenny McCarthy and her nonprofit Generation Rescue will stage an event for 6 p.m. Saturday at Herrington Inn and Spa, 15 S. River Lane, Geneva.

The event raises autism awareness through a VIP dinner and silent auction.

McCarthy is president of Generation Rescue and an advocate for children with autism and their families.

Her son Evan’s autism diagnosis inspired her involvement. General tickets to the event (40 tickets are available) can be bought for $250 each.

VIP tickets (eight tickets are available; include a meet-and-greet with McCarthy), can be bought for $1,000 each.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Hot dogs were sizzling on the grill, funnel cakes were boiling in hot fat and the carnival rides were shrieking by on Saturday, second to the last of the six-day Swedish Days Festival in Geneva.

“It’s a family day,” Reller said. “It’s always good to come down here. The kids have fun, the grown-ups get to do things, too, it’s nice. The food is always excellent” As the 64th annual event is hosted by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and includes activities, entertainment, food and several events.

Although weather predictions were for 90 degrees, with heat and rain, it was humid, but temperatures hovered in the mid-70s with light breezes, so crowds were not discouraged from the festival’s offerings.

Joyce and Richard Escalante of St. Charles both enjoyed a Swedish plate lunch from the Geneva

United Methodist Church, featuring sausage, a meatball, cucumber pickle salad and a cookie.

“I like all the different things there are to do and the sense of community,” Joyce Escalante said.

“It’s a real festive atmosphere,” Richard Escalante said. “The food is good, and we’re looking forward to seeing the rest of the activities.”

Matt Dean of St. Charles, his year-old son Henry and Wheaton terrier Watson were all having a good time.

“I like the crowds and I like all the vendors who are out here,” Dean said. “There’s a lot of different people and a lot of different things going on. It’s been pretty good weather for the most part.

I’ve come to Swedish Days the last seven years, ever since we moved out here.”

Among the charities that have booths at Swedish Days was Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, selling lemon shake-ups and other items, such as T-shirts, cook books and cat toys to support pet adoption.

“The magnets are the biggest seller,” said volunteer Carrie Erdman, as various car magnets

declared support for adopted and rescued pets. “And catnip balls, people seem to like. The kids come by and play with the cat toys – they’re colorful and they make noise.”

Sharon Reed of Geneva stopped to buy another car magnet, “Rescued is my favorite breed” in the shape of a dog bone. Reed said she lost her other magnet in a car wash and needed to replace it.

“I have two rescues,” Reed said.

“I have a miniature pinscher and miniature wire-haired dashund, Jax and Jillie. I got them from two other rescues, but this is always the one that’s at Swedish Days, so I always stop in here because I’m a firm believer in rescuing.”

Phyllis Jacobs of Bartlett and her three daughters – Carolyn Damrow, also of Bartlett, Susan Piper of Roselle and Synthia Sander of Schaumburg – were making a day of of shopping and food.

“We like everything about Swedish days – especially the food,” Jacobs said. “We went to the Little Traveler. And we had snacks inside and we shopped for clothing and the girls bought some pretty things.”

GENEVA – A festive mood surrounded Geneva High School Sunday afternoon as hundreds of participants in about a hundred entries lined up for the 64th annual Swedish Days Parade.

Strains of “God Bless America” could be heard as a band rehearsed, and a light summer breeze carried the scent of sunscreen.

Like many others seeking relief from the near 90-degree heat, members of the Geneva River Rats swim team waited for the 1 p.m. start under a tree. Head coach Joe Neukirch said this was the nonprofit’s fifth year participating in the parade.

Chris Ranallo, who will take over as head coach next year, said the parade is publicity for the team, whose members were encouraged to make signs for the event.

“It’s fun for the kids, too,” Neukirch said.

Nearby, members of the Greater Geneva Art Guild held pallets and wore paint-stained clothes. One member even dressed up as Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, “The Mona Lisa.”

Lorraine Ochsner is president of the relatively new group – it began about a year and a half ago – and said members hoped the parade would give their organization more exposure.

The guild got about a mile’s worth of publicity as it followed the parade’s course of Anderson Boulevard, State Street and Third Street.

Many spectators clustered under the shade, often on lawn chairs, slurping Big Gulps, water and other cool drinks as a digital bank sign broadcast a temperature of 89 degrees.

Katy Queen traveled from Schaumburg to watch her 9-year-old daughter, Alyssa, march with the West Suburban Homeschool Band.

About five other children joined her.

“They’re hot,” Queen said, noting they brought an umbrella for shade and juice boxes – which were gone halfway into the approximately two-hour parade – for refreshment.

On Third Street, Erin Kohlhagen of St. Charles danced with her 1-year-old daughter, Kylie, in her arms as musicians from The Well church in Geneva passed.

“All she cares about is if there’s dogs in the parade,” Kohlhagen said. “She gets very excited when she sees the dogs.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A.J. Friedman charted 1and 2-point baskets instead of hoisting them at Saturday’s Swedish Days 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

The Marmion alumnus from Geneva was unable to wrangle a team in time, but his summer involvement with the Geneva Park District produced a courtside view just the same.

“When you know you could be out there playing with them, when you’re watching, you itch to play,” Friedman said. “But it’s still fun in watching them play. There’s a lot of really intense games.”

Nineteen teams over three age divisions – 10 to 11, 12 to 13 and 18-plus – kept their bodies in motion and festivalgoers entertained from the time the youth games began around 9 a.m.

The turnout marked a slight regression from past years. Park district facilities manager David Shindley cited

a youth baseball tournament in the region that might have compromised would-be participants.

Those thirsting for hoops in what is arguably the Tri-Cities’ summer hotbed for the sport – Geneva High School hosts a boys league on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout June – didn’t seem to notice.

“It’s just kind of synonymous with Saturday morning,” Shindley said. “Because when we start, we’re kind of the only ones out here. None of the shops and booths are open yet. People that are down here are here to watch the 3-on-3.”

The Kosciuk team topped the Denning team in the adult final, which con-

cluded a few hours earlier than in past seasons due to quick games and the lower turnout.

Games were played to 15 points or 15 minutes – whichever came first. Playing back-to-back games was often the norm, but athletes had about 10-15 minutes of rest time in between.

Shindley, a fifth-year park district employee who coordinated the 3-on-3 for the second straight summer, credited a staff that included Friedman and fellow scorekeeper Michael Oetter, who both recently completed their first years of college.

While the tournament isn’t quite as seasoned as the 64-year old festival it’s part of, the event still has a strong following.

“Especially with the adults, it brings a lot of people to Third Street,” Shindley said. “People stop. See what’s going on. We get some pretty good crowds along the sidelines, even people that have nothing to really do with the tournament.”

Chronicle-area softball players sure did represent when the Illinois Coaches Association released its Class 3A and 4A all-state teams on Friday.

The coaches weren’t bad, either, for that matter, as St. Charles East’s Kelly Horan (4A) and Burlington Central’s Wade Maisto (3A) earned separate nods as sectional coaches of the year.

Kudos once again to the state runner-up Saints and Rockets, whose young core figures to make them a staple on these lists – but more preferably East Peoria – for years to come.

Leave it to Sly to second-guess on a couple snubs, though. Where’s the love for St. Francis? The STC’s Maggie Remus merited consideration as an exceedingly accurate right-handed pitcher, and Alyssa Fernandez stacks up with any slugging shortstop in the Land of Lincoln.

In any event, it was a good cross-section of Chronicle Country on the whole. Horan’s Saints got some good notice, along with Kaneland, which produced and area-high four selections.

Chronicle Player of the Year Sabrina Rabin was a more than deserving choice for the 4A first time, while fellow juniors Brooke Gaylord and Bekah Harnish of BC are liable to repeat as 3A selections next season.

Here’s hoping for another impressive haul in ’14. It’ll be tough to top the efforts from this season, but that’s why these ladies lace ’em up.

Don’t get ahead of yourselves, Hawks. As you know by now, the Bruins are physically and mentally tough.

Only two seasons ago, the Bruins trailed the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, in the Stanley Cup Final before winning Games 6 and 7.

Quenneville is determined to see his team complete its championship mission.

“We’ve got some guys that have been there,” Quenneville said. “They know the experience. They know the thinking going into a day like [Sunday] and going into [Monday], as well. We’ll visit with that as a team.

“There’s some guys that they’re so excited. You dream about this moment. But at the same time we’ve got to keep everything in perspective. We want to make sure that we’re confident playing the game and putting yourself in the ‘now’ position as opposed to [getting] ahead of yourself.”

The Hawks have done a good job of that so far.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Hawks gained a 3-1 series lead against the Minnesota Wild before returning to the United Center

for Game 5.

Game won. Series won.

Door slammed on the Wild.

In the second round of the playoffs, the Hawks climbed back from a 3-1 series deficit against the Detroit Red Wings to set up a winner-take-all Game 7.

Game won. Series won.

Door slammed on the Wings.

In the third round of the playoffs, the Hawks established a 3-1 series lead against the Los Angeles Kings before returning home for Game 5.

Game won. Series won.

Door slammed on the Kings.

Three times, the Hawks have reached three wins in a series. Three times, the Hawks have won the next game to finish the job and eliminate their opponent.

And now comes Boston.

Win the game, Hawks, and you win the Cup. So go ahead and slam the door on the Bruins.

In doing so, you’ll open the door to a championship.

For a kid, slamming doors is against the rules.

For an adult, it’s childish at best and mean spirited at worst.

For a hockey player, it’s a sign of a possible champion in the making.

That’s good news for the Blackhawks because they love, love, love to slam doors.

Maybe they don’t slam front doors or hotel doors or arena doors, but when they have a chance to slam the door on a playoff series, that’s exactly what they do.

The Hawks’ next door-slamming opportunity is the biggest yet. They lead the Boston Bruins, 3-2, in the Stanley Cup Final and have a chance to win the franchise’s second championship in four seasons with a victory Monday at Boston’s TD Garden.

One more win.

That’s it.

One more win, and you can hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup and be remembered forever.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville knows the excitement of the oh-so-close, one-more-win feeling. In 2010, the Hawks won Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final to take a 3-2 series lead against the Philadelphia Flyers, and they headed east for Game 6.

Soon after, they partied on Philadelphia’s ice with the Cup above their heads.

“It’s a fun time,” Quenneville told reporters Sunday after the team arrived in Boston. “The process of getting this far, it makes it all worthwhile along the way.

There’s some highs, there’s some lows, there’s some excitement, there’s some great days, there’s some tough days, and the one thing you don’t want [is] to get ahead of yourself in the process.”

It’s a simple message, but it’s worth repeating.

Dear Taken Aback: Children over the age of 3 should not be out in public with no clothes – and no child should be playing outside that way without supervision.

For that matter, clothed or not, for their own safety children should not play in the street.

Recently, I began to notice that we are never invited to some of their homes for dinner.

I know entertaining isn’t for everyone, but they do entertain other people – just not us. I’m not sure why this is. We would never go empty-handed. If we weren’t asked to bring a dessert or an appetizer, we would at least bring a bottle of wine to thank our hosts, and I’d help to clear the dishes and straighten the kitchen when the meal is over.

Have you any thoughts as to why an invitation is never extended to us? – Not On The “A” List Dear Not: The problem may be that the couple is embarrassed that they can’t entertain you as lavishly as you have entertained them.

Or, they may have never been taught that it is rude to accept people’s hospitality and not reciprocate in some way.

Because they are friends, you should pose this question to them and ask for an honest answer.

Dear Abby: I have been married for 19 years and this is the third time I have caught my wife cheating. I didn’t catch her “in the act” because she disguised it behind “vacations with her girlfriends.”

Napoleon Hill wrote books that explained how achievement actually occurs and gave a formula that put success within the reach of almost everyone. Hill said, “Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.”

At the bridge table, you need patience and persistence. If you are also getting a lot of perspiration, either you should try to relax or the air conditioning needs adjusting. Additionally, playing suit combinations correctly can be important. In this deal, for example, how should South try to make four spades? After West leads the club queen, the defenders take three tricks in the suit.

Then they cast adrift with a heart to dummy’s king.

North’s jump to four spades showed four-card support and 18-20 support points, counting high-card and shortage points. It was not a sign-off. If South had a strong hand, he would have headed toward slam.

Declarer needs to draw trumps without loss. The right start is a low spade from the board – not the queen, in case East has a singleton king. However, when East plays low, declarer puts in his jack.

After that wins, South plays a heart to dummy’s ace and now calls for the spade queen. If East does not cover, the queen takes the trick, declarer plays a spade to his 10, cashes the spade ace and claims 10 tricks. If East covers the spade queen, South wins with his ace and notes that West discards. Back to the board with a diamond to the king (or a heart ruff), declarer plays a spade to his eight, cashes the spade 10 and claims.
