Huntley grad uses speed to aid team For a player who led Heartland Community College’s baseball team in doubles last season, Andre Sopena is thinking small this summer.

“I’m trying to bunt more and get out of the (batter’s) box quicker,” said Sopena, a Huntley graduate who is playing with the Crystal Lake Cardinals summer team.

“I only had five bunts last season.”

Despite the lack of bunts, Sopena and Heartland enjoyed impressive seasons.

The school in Normal placed fourth in last month’s NJCAA Division II World Series with Sopena leading the team in doubles (19), runs scored (59) and stolen bases (37). Sopena, who also batted .328 with 38 RBIs, ranked sixth nationally in stolen bases and seventh in doubles.

“He’s a speed guy who was everything for us at the top of our order,” Heartland coach Nate Metzger said. “He set the table for us all year long.”

Batting leadoff, Sopena was the team’s regular designated hitter, but spent time at second base and in the outfield.

He made the biggest impact, however, with his feet.

“Speed is very big for me,” he said. “I’m only 5-8, but I tell people I’m 5-9 in cleats.

Playing the past two seasons at Heartland helped Sopena improve his knowledge of the game and earn an NCAA Division I opportunity at Oakland (Mich.) University.

“The (Heartland) coaching staff has a lot of experience,” Sopena said. “They helped me gain a lot of wisdom.

They taught me what to do in certain situations and when to run. I learned to love the game.”

Metzger credited Sopena for a positive attitude throughout his career.

“We’ll be able to replace Andre the player, but replacing Andre the person is going to be a lot harder,” he said.

“As good of a player as he was, he was a better character and leadership guy.”

Sopena said he appreciated his relationships and honesty with teammates.

“That’s the most important thing to me as a player, to be a good teammate,” he said. “I told my guys that if we have a conflict, we need to settle it right now. And if I

get on you for something, it’s not because I hate you. It’s because I’m trying to make you better, and I want you to do the same for me.”

Sopena hopes to compete for the second base job at Oakland this fall when he arrives on campus.

“Second base is my passion, but if I’m in the lineup somewhere, that’s OK,” he said.

Hammer star: Prairie Ridge grad Lina Baker earned NCAA Division III All-America honors last month by placing seventh in the hammer throw at the outdoor track and field nationals in LaCrosse, Wis. Baker, a sophomore at Naperville’s North Central College, bested her own school record with a throw of 173 feet to become the Cardinals’ first All-American in the event.

Appearing at her first national meet, Baker was seeded 21st in a field of 22 competitors at nationals.

This season, she improved her personal-best throw by almost 40 feet.

Golf accolades: Illinois Wesleyan senior Stefan Johnson (Marian Central) was named this month to the NCAA Division III PING All-America second team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Johnson ranked second

on the team with a 74.8 stroke average and finished second as an individual at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet, helping IWU to the team title.

He posted five top-10 finishes this season, including the individual title at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational in March, where he posted a 1-over-par total of 217 (72-7471) in the three-round event.

Carthage College senior Donnie Langland (Jacobs) was chosen to the All-Central Region team.

This season, Langland qualified as an individual for the D-III Men’s Golf Championship in Destin, Fla., where he posted rounds of 85 and 88.

He tied for 16th at the CCIW meet.

Langland led Carthage this season with a 73.8 stroke average and 12 top-10 finishes in 14 events. He was the individual champion at four events, including the Marian (Wis.) Invitational and the Elmhurst Bluejay Classic in April.

Village looks for developer to preserve mill

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Village officials hope to find a developer interested in maintaining the structure of a 19th century mill in downtown Huntley that local historians had been working to preserve.

The Huntley Village Board signaled support this month for village staff to craft a proposal seeking developers interested in reusing the historic Sawyer-Kelley Mill located at 11801 Main St. Last year, the village acquired the property for $115,000 as part of its ongoing effort to

make over Huntley’s downtown. Local historians at the time feared officials were planning to tear down the building to create parking spaces.

“The intent would be to keep the historical aspects of the building and see if there is a way to reuse it as that building,” Village Manager Dave Johnson said. “What we are doing is seeing if there is anybody out there that can make that building work for them in a viable business plan.”

If the village ultimately can’t find the right developer, officials would have to assess other uses for the building and see if those options align

with the village’s revitalization plan, which calls for improving building facades, sidewalks and streetscapes throughout Huntley’s historic downtown.

Staff have been directed to draft a development proposal for the historic mill and present it to the board within a month, Johnson said. With final board approval, staff would then distribute the proposal to potential developers.

Built in the late 1800s, the Sawyer-Kelley mill originally belonged to W.G. Sawyer and John Kelley, two influential businessmen who were instrumental in developing Huntley after the village’s founding.

A cash-for-gold business and cleaning service operated out of the former mill when the village acquired it last year.

Johnson said the decision to try and preserve the structure of the former mill was motivated through yearlong talks with the village’s historic preservation commission.

Commission chairwoman Donna Britton said members were excited to hear that village officials were interested in preserving the former mill.

“We love it,” Britton said.

“The opportunity is available for someone who would like to come in with a plan to try and preserve this building.”

Sharing the road safely Motorists urged to watch out for farm equipment

By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com When Karl Zierer bought his farm northwest of Huntley in 1967, he only had to share the road with the school bus and the milk truck.

Things are much different now with subdivisions popping up in otherwise rural areas and the suburbs spreading farther west. The farm equipment is getting bigger too.

The mix is a potentially fatal one.

In 2011, of the 259 accidents across Illinois that involved farm equipment, six of them resulted in fatalities and 69 of them in injuries, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The same number of fatalities occurred the year before.

It’s something John Bartman thinks about a lot, especially after his own close call

last May. Bartman was headed north on Dunham Road near the intersection with Route 176 in Seneca Township, east of Marengo, about 4 p.m. that day when a Chevy Tahoe came up behind him and rear-ended him, hitting the rotary hoe attached to Bartman’s 1968 tractor.

The rotary hoe detached from the tractor. The wheels, which look like Chinese throwing stars and are designed to dig up the earth, went flying.

Pieces of the hoe hit Bartman in the head and shoulder. The Tahoe was totaled.

“I was fortunate,” he said.

“I got away with only scratches. I’m glad I went to church that Sunday.”

Mancel “Butch” Beard, a Harvard farmer with a wife of 47 years, a father of three and a grandfather of three, wasn’t as lucky.

The 66-year-old was killed in May 2011 when the tractor he was riding along Route 23 in Marengo was struck by a car, causing his tractor to flip and sending Beard flying 10 feet.

“There are collisions on a fairly regular basis, and a lot of that has to do with the amount of traffic and the speed people are going in comparison to the speed tractors and combines are going,” said Dan Volkers, the manager of the McHenry County Farm Bureau.

Volkers has worked with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office to raise awareness, sending out joint releases to area media.

“We really want to educate people that the farm equipment is out there,” Lt. Jim Wagner said. “They’re not lit like other vehicles.”

they’re towing don’t, he said.

They do have the red or orange triangle on the backs that indicate they’re slow-moving vehicles.

Some accidents also arise when cars try to pass in no-passing zones or don’t realize how wide the equipment is, Volkers said.

Wagner recommended waiting until the farmer finds a place to pull over instead of risking a pass.

Last fall, during the harvest season, safety messages were played on local radio stations, and two years ago, in the fall following Beard’s death, billboard advertisements were taken out.

The goal is to create a campaign similar to “Start seeing motorcycles.” Banners, 30 feet by 3½ feet, reminded visitors to Harvard Milk Days to slow down and share the road.

Tips to avoid accidents • Slow down as soon as you see farm equipment or mowers.

• Watch for hand signals. Veering to the right could mean the tractor is about to make a wide turn, not necessarily that it’s pulling over to let you pass.

• A reflective red or orange triangle means the vehicle is slow moving.

• Do not speed past farm machinery and pass only in safe, designated passing zones. Don’t assume they know you’re there, and leave plenty of space when you move back to the right lane.

Zierer, will be out all summer, cutting the hay, spraying fields and making deliveries, and in the fall, around September, the farm equipment will be back out on the road in force, bringing in the harvest.
